To come to Sikkim, you must drop off at West Bengal, where the airport and railway station are, and then take a cab to Sikkim, roughly a 4-hour journey. Although a few of you prefer to start biking from Siliguri, almost all the tours start from Gangtok. Riders with Tripoventure have to pick up and drop the bikes themselves at MG Marg, the city’s central hub.

Sikkim has a rugged and dramatic terrain for thrilling biking experiences; hence, bikes like the Royal Enfield classics and Himalayan are perfect. The power and comfort of these bikes are especially ideal for high-altitude off-roading.

Although the bikes we provide have very little chance of breaking down, we would be lying if we said that we hadn’t encountered bike breakdown cases during tours. Our operations crew is adept at handling any situation and is always on standby to lend support.

Gurudongmar Lake: A sacred lake for Buddhists and Hindus alike, this lake is one of the most famous places to visit in North Sikkim. The lake lies at an elevation of 17,800 feet.

Lachung: Offering uninterrupted sceneries of the Himalayas, the quaint valley of Lachung is a very famous picnic and camping spot. People usually come here to camp along the stream of the river.

Seven Sisters Waterfall: As the name suggests, this waterfall is a combination of seven different streams of water which further make a giant pool on the rocks.

The best time to enjoy the beauty of North Sikkim tourist spots is around the winter season. The months between October to March are considered to be the best timeframe around which one can enjoy sightseeing, activities and much more, without the scorching heat of sun.

Places To Visit During Sikkim Bike Trip

Sikkim is a North-Eastern state of India bordered by Bhutan, Tibet, and Nepal. Sikkim is divided into 4 districts as North Sikkim, East Sikkim, West Sikkim, and South Sikkim. Here, I am starting with North Sikkim.

If Tsomgo Lake, Gangtok and Nathula pass is the only place you have heard about, then buddy let’s take you for a ride. Here are the top 8 places to visit in Sikkim.

Tsomgo Lake

  • Gurudongmar lake
  • Yumthang valley

Nathula Pass

Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim and the largest town as well. Situated at an elevation of 1,650 meters (5,410 ft), it is the center of Sikkim’s tourism industry. It was once an important transit point for traders traveling between India and Tibet. Descending the hillside in steep tiers and providing a spectacular view of the Khangchendzonga, Gangtok acts as a perfect base for tourists traveling to various other parts of Sikkim.

How to reach?

Once you reach Bagdogra Airport, you can hire a bike/car to Gangtok or you can book a package from Deyor Camps for a hassle-free trip. It's around 120 km from Siliguri which will take 3 hours approximately.

Things to do in Gangtok

Best time to visit

The months of March, April, May, October, November, and December are the best time to visit Gangtok. These are the months that will suit the majority of the Riders. The temperature here ranges from an average maximum of 22 °C (72 °F) in summer to an average minimum of 4 °C (39 °F) in winter.

This lake is situated at a height of 12,400 ft. from the sea level. It is around 30 km from Gangtok. For the overwhelming scenery of this lake, it becomes a favorite destination for riders. The beautiful lake is frozen during winters. You may find snow all around and have some unforgettable moments in the snow. If you are lucky, you can see strawberry trees on the way and pick some yourself as well. You will find tea points and Maggi points while on the way.

“ Lachen”, in local language it means ‘Big Pass’. It is situated at a height of 8,838 feet above sea level. It will take around 6-7 hours to ride up to this place from Gangtok. Expect a rollercoaster ride through the bumpy roads. From Chungthang Valley, the road splits into two directions. The road on the left leads to the city, which is about 26 Km from Chungthang.

Best Time to Visit

March to June temperature ranges between 10 degrees Celsius to 28 degrees Celsius. However, the peak season is generally around March to June and October to December because of the stability of weather and increased visibility.

Gurudongmar Lake

This lake is located at a height of 17,100 feet above sea level. It is one of the highest lakes in the world. It is also the second-highest lake in Sikkim. The lake has an area of 118 hectares and its peripheral length is 5.34 Kms.

The best time to visit the Lake is from March to June and October to December. You can expect temperatures between -2 degrees to 0 degrees during this season. If you want to do something Tufani and to see the lake along with the surroundings beautifully frozen then the early weeks of December are ideal for you to visit. The temperature can go down to -8 degrees to -10 degrees in the day.

This Lake is around 64 km from Lachen and the distance from Gangtok to Lachen is around 121 Km. Since there is no proper accommodation facility available after Lachen, on the way to Gurudongmar Lake. Therefore you’ll have to spend the night in the hotels or homestays of Lachen.

The journey to Gurudongmar begins early in the morning. The weather conditions around the lake are most favorable in the first half of the day and worsen in the second half.

It is located at a distance of 120 Km from Gangtok and 135 Kms from Lachen. its height is around 8,610 ft above sea level. The town is one of the favorite destinations for riders who plan to go to places like Katao Valley, Zero Point and Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim.

How to Reach?

It will take you 6-8 hours to reach Lachung from Gangtok. It is a wise idea to get in touch with highly experienced travel partners like Deyor Camps before booking a trip to Lachung. Lachung is less cold in comparison to Lachen. There are quite a few restaurants in Lachung that serve Thukpa which is a very famous dish there. It is a kind of delicious mixed Meat Noodle soup.

The best time to visit Lachung would be from March to June and October to December. The weather is as pleasant as it could be during these months and you will experience clear visibility of mountain ranges.

Yumthang Valley

The Yumthang Valley name brings one thing in mind, Flowers. ‘Yumthang Valley’ or you can call it “Valley of flowers’. This beautiful valley is Situated 11,800 feet above sea level.

It is around 26 km from Lachung. The closest town from Yumthang is the charming village of  Lachung . You’ll have to take a stopover at Lachung because after that proper accommodations are not available.

Best Time to visit

March to June & Oct to Dec.

Temperature

Summer - 14 to 20 degrees celsius

Winter - 15 to 10 degrees celsius

Located at an altitude of 14450ft and 58kms from Gangtok, the Nathula Pass is not only a popular spot for riders because of its natural beauty, but also because it is enriched in history. The Pass is an offshoot of the Old Silk Route, connecting Sikkim to the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The distance between Lachung and Nathula is 162 Kms. The only way to reach the pass is through a ride from Gangtok. Vehicles Like Car/Bike are available for rent in Gangtok. If you are traveling with Deyor Camps then you’ll get the best services here. The road from Gangtok to Nathula pass will be rising and falling sharply and sometimes it becomes slippery too. Although most of the roads are decently maintained, except in a few places. Riding on these roads can be your lifetime experience. We suggest you keep a Nathula Pass map while driving to the pass because you’ll not get a proper network there, so you won’t be able to access Google maps also. Be ready for challenging terrain.

The temperature at Nathula Pass drops as low -25 ° C during winters and the minimum temperature during the summers( March to June ) will be approximately 10 ° C. The Best time to go there is March to June and Oct to Dec. You can contact Deyor Camps for fixed departures for a bike trip.

It remains closed on Monday and Tuesday. Visiting days are Wednesday to Sunday.

How To Get Nathula Pass Permit?

It is produced by the Sikkim Tourism Department in Gangtok. If you are traveling with Deyor Camps then you don’t have to worry about anything. You’ll get your permits done.

All you need to do is to submit a photo ID proof along with two passport-sized photographs. Children below 4 years are not allowed officially. Only Indians with a valid permit are allowed to visit Nathula Pass.

Sightseeing In and Around Nathula

The Himalaya here is breathtakingly beautiful. The Alpine forests, the snow-capped mountains, the winding roads and the history surrounding it will give you sheer chills - literally too. There is a famous temple named Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir which is a place of great importance in terms of tourism and is strategically located on the Indo-China border. Harbhajan Singh was an Indian Army workforce.

How To Reach?

It is approximately 178 km from Gangtok and 162 km from Lachung. You’ll have to take a halt at Zuluk after crossing Nathula pass.

Zuluk is a small village located at an altitude of about 10,000 Feet on the craggy terrain of the lower Himalayas in East Sikkim. Around 700 people are residing at Zuluk. The main attraction of Zuluk is its eye-catching zig-zag Path which is called Zuluk Loop. From the Thambi viewpoint, you can have a bird's eye view of Zuluk. This is the ideal place of watching sunrise and sunset over the world's third-highest mountain Mt. Kanchenjunga

Zuluk’s weather is pleasant most of the year. Of course, since it is situated at high altitude, winters are comparatively cold. The benefit of visiting Zuluk during the winter season is that you can see the loops covered with snow. But we don’t suggest you travel there in winter because that route becomes scary because of heavy snowfall and roads would also be blocked.

However, season time is March to June and October to December.

The distance between Gangtok and Zuluk is 90 km. From Lachung it is around 164 Kms. It will take about 3 hours to reach here from Gangtok.

Permits are mandatory for everyone either Indian or foreigner (Requirements for permits are mentioned below). This is because Sikkim is a border state that shares its boundaries with 2 other countries.

Day 1 : Gangtok

The closest air link to Sikkim is at Bagdogra in neighboring West Bengal. On your arrival at Bagdogra, our drivers will get you to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.

Sikkim is the second smallest state in India; so do not expect the capital to be a sprawling mass of buildings. Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is perched at a height of 5,800 ft, along the trade route between India and Tibet.

Once checked in and rested, your Trip Leader will meet you at your hotel. Shortly after, you will get to try out your bike and ride up to Enchey Gompa giving you a neat little introduction to biking in Gangtok and its cultural practices.

Itinerary Image

Day 2 : Gangtok

We start early today from the hotel for the Gangtok to Hanuman Tok loop. With smiling locals and prayer flags fluttering along the mountainsides, you will get a chance to kick off your Sikkim bike tour on a high note with this lengthier ride through town up to Gangtok’s highest point and back.

Gangtok Loop Day2.png

Day 3 : Rumtek

We start early this morning to the pilgrimage town of Rumtek. Built in the 16th century, by Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje, the Rumtek monastery is one of the most important seats of Buddhism in the state. The ride starts with a 20 km downhill ride after which we ride back up the hill to our next hotel. Since is there a fair amount of traffic initially, you can use the backup shuttle at any time if you need it. The road is bumpy but as you get away from central Gangtok, you will get the hang of it. Prayer flags will flutter in the breeze as you pass paddy terraces and each little house has its own little garden in bloom colorfully in the front on this route. At Rumtek, we check in at Hotel Teen Taley, an eco-conscious resort with landscaped gardens, comfy rooms, and excellent hospitality. The food here is made with care the traditional way with locally sourced ingredients. You will find that the small world charm of an era gone by lingers here still in these soulful valleys.

Gangtok-Rumtek.png

Day 4 : Temi Tea Garden

The journey from Rumtek to Temi Tea Garden, the only tea estate in Sikkim, is long and arduous. It starts with a winding descent through rustic terrain followed by a slow climb up to the tea gardens. As the sprawling tea estates open up around you, you will find the effort to be worth the trouble.

Rumtek-TemiTeaGarden.png

Day 5 : Ravangla

There is an initial gradual climb with the therapeutic green of the tea gardens giving way to small villages tucked away in between the wild forests. The route then flattens out before going downhill to Ravangla.

TemiTeaGarden-Ravangla.png

Day 6 : Yuksom

Today’s route is likely to be one of the most awe-inspiring bits of your Sikkim cycling trip! A long and challenging climb with unmatched views all around.

We take a break at Tashiding in time for a visit to the Tashiding monastery. It is an important monastery for the Buddhist pilgrims as it is said to be the meeting point of the three Holy Lamas of Tibet in 1641 A.D. Perched on a conical hill, this is where Lhatsun Chenpo, the patron saint of Sikkim, is said to have built the famous Chorten or Stupa of Tashiding Thongwa Rangdol. The tranquil environs of the monastery will leave you in a zen state of mind.

Ravangla-Yuksom.png

Day 7 : Yuksom

We take a break from riding this day so you can enjoy the mountainous environs of this alpine village. Take a walk around to explore Yuksom. One can visit the Gompa and the lake where the First King of Sikkim was crowned or trek up to the Dubdi monastery if you feel like hiking a bit. Dubdi monastery is the oldest monastery of Sikkim and can be reached in less than an hour from the hotel. Once up there, sit back, and relax, you have plenty of time to take it all in.

Itinerary Image

Day 8 : Pelling

Back on our bikes nice and early again, the route in this section begins with long downhill sections in the first half and rolling, uphill sections in the second half. There are several waterfalls en route including the Kanchenjunga falls. And if you have somehow managed to turn enough prayer wheels to please the Weather Gods, the views of the mighty Kanchenjunga Range will enthrall you as you reach Pelling.

At 2,072 m/6,800 feet above sea level, the crisp air of Pelling is refreshing and inspiring. Quaint villages, deep valleys, and forested mountains surround you as you bike into this unhurried little town.

This is a great place for you to pick up some souvenirs; Darjeeling tea for black tea lovers, Tibetan carpets, jewelry, and bric-a-brac, there is plenty to choose from. So make sure you leave enough room in your bags when you start packing at home.

We stay here at the Himalayan Hotel, which has been home to Everest expeditions from the days of Mallory and Irving in the 1920s. In the early days of the last century, the hotel was the family home of David Macdonald. After accompanying the Younghusband Mission to Lhasa in 1904 as an interpreter, Macdonald was posted to Tibet as a British Trade Agent, serving in Yatung and Gyantse until his retirement in 1924. Today it is managed by Nilam and Tim Macdonald, David Macdonald’s grandson. They have ensured it remains, in the words of the distinguished travel writer James Cameron, “a collector’s piece among hotels” and that little has changed since.

Reviews from our friends

Elizabeth from us.

memorable experience in Sikkim

Art of Bicycle Trips gave our group of ten women a memorable experience in Sikkim. The condition of the roads and the mountainous landscape made riding challenging, but it was worth every moment to experience the vistas of the Himalaya, the lush landscape, prayer flags everywhere and colorful cultural sites around every corner.

Betsy from US

Simply awesome

Ten white women on mountain bikes, who were definitely not in their twenties still turned plenty of eyes in Sikkim! Art of Bicycling did a great job customizing a route for us, plenty challenging, but also time to rest, relax and enjoy the beauty of this special place.

Exploring the Sikkim Silk Route on Motorbike

Photo of Sushant Panda

People who smoke get slides when they don't smoke for quite sometime....and something simalr happens with Riders when they are kept away from roads for long. It had been 6 months since I hadnt taken my Zeus (Bullet on a ride) and there was this inner calling which made me look for places around Kolkata and to my surprise there were not many.

Thats when my friend spoke about Zuluk Pass (59 hairpin bends) and Made me google about it. Trust me when I saw the first pic Google suggested me, I had made my mind and I knew my next ride had to be Zuluk.

Before I start talking about my ride lets understand what is the famous Sikkim Silk Route is all about.Old Silk Route or Silk Road which passes through East Sikkim is a part of the ancient network of trade routes which connected China to India . This route passed through Lhasa and Nathu La and Jelep La Pass and finally reached the port of Tamralipta (present Tamluk in West Bengal).

So after all the research we realised we can do the Sikkim Silk Rout starting at Siliguri and can End the ride at Gangtok via Zuluk.

The only pain in this plan I had, was to take my Bike to Siliguri. After my Bhutan experience I had no mood to ride from Kolkata to Siliguri. Finally three riders choose to join the ride from Siliguri. So we transferred our bike on Train to Siliguri and thats where we started our ride.

Things to remember while transferring bike to destination.

Best mode of transport is always Indian Railway. Get all ur documents ready (Bike registration, DL, Insurance, Pollution Check). Find an agent to do all the packing and documentation (it saves lot of time n hassles). Transfer the bike two day in advance so you receive the bike right on the day of ur ride. Get it properly packed at the station to avoid damages and unpleasant surprises.

Its essential to get your permit done before hand when you plan this trip. Permit is required to enter Sikkim, Cross Zuluk, Nathula, And Enter Gangtok. Preferable 05-06 copies of Permit + Permission from Sikkim Home Department. And Proper copies of the vehicle documents is essential.

Suggest to take help of an agent by sending documents before one week to get the permits done. So last minute running around is avoided.

Day-1: ( Siliguri to Reshi )- Via Kalimpong -- Pedong.

Took the delivery of bike from New Jalpaiguri station and got it checked before the ride. The Ride starts from Siliguri. You start climbing hills right after sevole more. The roads to Kalimpong goes right along bank of Teesta River and the first feel of a hill station is what you get when you reach Kalimpong through the curveous roads. Then you descend & climb many more hills till you reach Reshi. A beautiful town on the river bank. Stay at an eco resort. (Prior booking is advisable). Rest in the right at the river side resort. Rooms are as cheap as 700 per person. (includes Dinner & breakfast). Beautiful place to relax and enjoy serenity of the nature. Take cottages which are facing the river. A trek of 15-20 mins to reach Reshi Eco-resort while taking bamboo bridges and jungle pathways. We were escorted by a German Shepard till we reached the Resort. Rooms were basic but spaicious. Suggest to carry your own Towel & toiletries. Food is homely. You can sip your rum..breezer sitting right on the river bank & enjoy the sunset.

You don't need entry permit till Reshi.

Day-2: (Reshi to Gnathang )-- Via Rongli, Zuluk.

Lazy breakfast, exploring the river bank jungle, clicking pictures of birds, butterflies and landscapes did set the mood for the day.we packed our saddle bags, carried it back to river through the same routes we came from and bid farewell to Reshi. Loaded the bags on bike-- secured it with Bungee cords, covees it with polywraps to save it from Rain,we started our trip for Zuluk pass. First check point is right after 40 mins of ride from Reshi. Don't forget to show your pass and give a copy at the post.(Or else you may have to return back if you cross the gate without submitting a copy). The beauty of Hills starts right after Reshi. Roads are narrow and picturesque and you won't regret riding. Monsoon rain did make us stop at places but didn't kill our spirit because Zuluk was waiting for us. We rode through the misty clouded mountains. Roads were well maintained and ride was nothing but sheer pleasure.

Crossing Zuluk and taking 59 hairpin bends was the kick of the Day 02 ride and we reached a small town called Gnathang. Thambi View point was amazing from where you get the best view of Zuluk. We couldn't see the whole landscape of Zuluk along with all the hairpin bends due to clouds but still the view was breathtaking and my camera shutter didn't stop for 15-20mins. Book your homestay at Gnathang before you reach. We experienced the best hospitality of simple & homely people of hills who cooked maggi-- gave us hot coffee as many times as we asked with a smile-- made your room warm with room heaters and cooked amazing chicken.

Day-03: (Gnathang to Gangtok) Via-- Kupup , Nathula, Changu Lake.

We started as early as 6 am. Visited Thambi view point again. And then we were back to explore the route full of lakes, army bunkers, snow covered hills. It was day full of sight seeing. Every 02 kms you get to see a lake. Take prior guidance of Locals so you don't miss any. And what all we saw....is like a never ending list.

  • Thambi View Point
  • Tukla Valley
  • Jelepla Pass
  • Eagle’s Nest Bunker
  • Strawberry Lake
  • Lampokhari Lake
  • Laxman Chowk
  • OldBaba Mandir
  • New Baba Mandir
  • Menmecho Lake
  • Nathula Pass
  • Four Lake Point
  • Yak Golf Course (Golf course at World's Highest altitude of 13000ft)
  • Younghusband’s Track
  • Changu Lake

The ride after Changu Lake was bit difficult due to Land slides, heavy fog and increased traffic of tourist visiting Nathula from Gangtok. But our bikes cruised through all this till we reached Gangtok. Its a trip worth exploring on bike and not to mention a delight for photographers & explorers. Don't miss to see the Chinese Army Camps while crossing Kupup and reaching Nathula. Another border touched another pass conquered and we reach Siliguri back from Gangtok descending down. If you have time explore Monastries near Gangtok, Play Casino & enjoy the Karoke bar at the Mall road.

Spanish tourist camping with her husband is gang raped in India; 3 arrested as police search for more suspects

Updated on: March 4, 2024 / 8:47 AM EST / CBS/AFP

Three Indian men have appeared in court after the gang rape of a Spanish tourist on a motorbike trip with her husband, with police hunting four other suspects, reports said Monday.

The attack took place on Friday night in eastern India in Jharkhand state's Dumka district, where the couple were camping.

A total of seven men are accused of carrying out the brutal assault.

"We have formed a team to hunt the remaining suspects," senior local police officer Pitamber Singh Kherwar told AFP.

On Sunday, three accused were seen being escorted into court with sacks on their heads by police officers holding ropes tied around their waists. The three were later remanded in custody.

INDIA-SPAIN-CRIME

The Spanish woman and her husband were also in court.

The couple  told Spanish TV channel Antena 3 on Saturday that the men raped the woman and hit the man repeatedly, the Reuters news agency reported.  They said they had camped out because they could not find hotels nearby, Reuters reported.

"We have to ensure strict punishment," Kherwar said, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported Monday.

Kherwar said a special team including forensic officers had been formed to scour the scene of the attack, while another team was hunting more suspects.

"They are constantly raiding places," Kherwar said in PTI's report. "We will soon arrest the remaining accused."

An average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in India in 2022, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau.

That year, police arrested 11 people after the alleged brutal gang rape and torture of a young woman that included her being paraded through the streets of Dehli. Also in 2022, a police officer in India was arrested after being accused of raping a 13-year-old girl who went to his station to report she had been gang-raped.

In 2021, a 34-year-old woman in Mumbai died after being  raped and brutally tortured .

Large numbers of rapes go unreported due to prevailing stigmas around victims and a lack of faith in police investigations.

Convictions remain rare, with cases getting stuck for years in India's clogged-up criminal justice system.

The notorious gang rape and murder of an Indian student made global headlines in 2012 .

Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, was raped, assaulted and left for dead by five men and a teenager on a bus in New Delhi in December that year.

The horrific crime shone an international spotlight on India's high levels of sexual violence and sparked weeks of protests, and eventually a change in the law to introduce the death penalty for rape .
