I want to travel by train to Moscow. I live in the UK. I am able to travel to other places in europe to start the train journey, whati sthe best way to go and what are the extras such as visas?

if you search for seat 61 in google, this has good information on getting from UK to most places in the world mostly by train. If you take the train London to Brussels then a train to Cologne, then the direct train from Cologne to Moscow that is probably the most direct way by train. If you had time to waste you could be a lot more adventurous than that going through some countries that would require visas even to just transit.

A good idea when take overland transport to Russia is avoid going through Belarus unless you actually plan to see some of it. The visa there is a pain to obtain and is also rather expensive.

Man in Seat 61, as aharrold45 has suggested, is the best source I have found for train information in Europe. He's just a guy, but he cares deeply about train travel, and will link you to any and all sources of information you might need. The link is Seat 61 . He's especially good at trips starting the UK, as that is where he is from.

As for visas, you would need visas for both Russia and Belarus (transit visa if you don't plan on staying long) if you take the standard journey. You can skip over Belarus if you travel instead through the Baltic countries like Estonia. There's ferries involved, but it's still overland and avoids the Belarussian visa, which some have said can be a pain to get. (Personally, I had no issues, but one man's experience does not a pattern make).

If you intend to travel around the European part of Russia and Eastern Europe for a bit and are not just going to Moscow, the cheapest way to do it is to fly to Bratislava with Ryanair and buy a City-Star ticket to Russia there.
