A rarity for backpacks of this size and weight, it comes with a thin hipstrap for better distributing weight, two water bottle cages (one on each side), and a spacious external pocket for stashing anything you need to reach quickly. It packs down into its own dedicated stuff sack, so you can easily toss it into your luggage and have a quality hiking or walking-about-town daypack on hand when you arrive at your destination. “Overall, I love this bag’s packability, weight, and additional features like the hipstrap,” says Jessie Beck, AFAR’s associate director of SEO & Video. “I’ve used it on at least a dozen trips since getting it, and it’s proven to be durable and sturdy as well.”

She calls it the “ Trojan horse of weekend bags ” since it holds so much more inside than you’d expect. She can easily fit two pairs of shoes, two toiletry bags, and three days of winter clothing in it. An added bonus—the sustainable nylon material is made from 22 recycled plastic water bottles.

Arxus Foldable Duffle Tote

Most foldable bags have a main pocket and a small zippered pocket for smaller items, which is no different. However, the Arxus Foldable Duffle Tote also has two mesh side pockets for water bottles. Made from lightweight waterproof, and tear-resistant oxford fabric, this bag is extremely durable. It’s a handy bag for any extra luggage that you may pick up on your travels. As one of the best travel bags that fold up, it sure doesn’t disappoint. When you unfold it, the bag has a storage capacity of 25L.

If you’re planning to take this as backup carry-on luggage, you can pack it to fit under the seat in front of you. The detachable extensible shoulder strap and grab handles are convenient for transporting the bag. Moreover, we also like that it can be slipped onto the handle of bigger luggage with its attach-a-bag sleeve.

  • We love how lightweight and durable this bag is.
  • There are extra pockets on the inside and outside.
  • The extensible shoulder straps are detachable.
  • There are dedicated mesh pockets for water bottles.
  • It’s the most impressive travel bag but good for fitting extra stuff like souvenirs.

For the die-hard ‘backpack fan,’ this one’s for you. The Naturehike 18L Packable Backpack is so convenient that it can be folded small and stuffed into a small space to emerge when you need it. It has some surprisingly good features that made an impression on us too. It’s made from high-quality 30D nylon material and stitched with fine nylon lines, making it more durable. Added to this is the fact that it is tear-resistant. The YKK zippers are also sealed with silicone for additional durability.

As the name suggests, the large main pocket is roomy enough with an 18L capacity. Additionally, there’s also an outer and inner zippered pocket and two side mesh pockets. Padded adjustable shoulder straps make the bag comfortable to carry around. Touted as a ‘sea to sky bag’ for men and women, we couldn’t agree more with the functionality of this backpack.

Dimensions: Folded 4.7 x 2.7 inches – Unfolded 17 x 10 inches

  • Though lightweight, this backpack is so durable.
  • It folds so small that finding a place for it won’t be difficult.
  • The high-quality ripstop-nylon material is long-lasting.
  • The YKK zippers are silicone coated.

Best Brand. Samsonite has been in the luggage-making business for a while now, and the Samsonite Tote-A-Ton 32.5 Inch Duffel is one of its best products! This foldable duffel bag proves why the brand is so well-liked. With over 6,000 reviews on Amazon, the Samsonite Tote-A-Ton does seem to be a popular buy. With its affordable price tag and durable material, this bag impressed us so much that it even made it to our list of best budget luggage as well!

This no-frills bag can be taken as a foldable backup bag or can even be used as travel luggage. Crafted from lightweight, durable denier nylon, the bag expands to 32 inches when packed to capacity. According to the official website , it only weighs 1 lb! This means you have plenty of packing space. However, like some travel bags that fold up, it’s not big on organizational pockets. An interior zippered pocket and an exterior pocket are your only additional options. Although there are no straps or wheels, a sturdy handle will help you to transport the bag easily.

Dimensions: Unfolded 33 x 17 x 11.5 inches

  • This is a versatile and multipurpose bag that you can take wherever you go.
  • Crafted from durable denier nylon, it can last for years.
  • We love its large compartment with an interior zippered pocket.
  • It’s available in 12 different colorways.
  • No wheels or straps could make this a little difficult to carry if packed to full capacity.

Suppose you’re looking for a travel bag that provides you with multiple options for storage or luggage; we highly recommend this best collapsible suitcase. This bag’s versatility allows you to take it as carry-on or checked luggage. The Hanke 20-Inch Foldable Suitcase is a collapsible luggage bag that expands to three heights and has a storage capacity ranging from 54.99L to 90L. Additionally, it folds down flat when empty, so you won’t find it too difficult to store this luggage when you’re not using it.

We think that this is one of the best carry-on luggage for men as there’s a lot that you can fit into the first layer of the bag. The bag has firm top handles and a convenient adjustable shoulder strap. Outfitted with four silent wheels, this foldable luggage bag is also easy to maneuver. Furthermore, we like the durability of the polyester fabric with sturdy zippers. Check out this YouTube video review to get to know this suitcase better!

What makes it one of the best foldable bags for travel is its 2-in-1 feature as both a carry-on and a checked bag! Talk about versatility! In its normal state, this bag is only 24 inches. But once expanded, it becomes a huge 28-inch luggage bag!

The fun doesn’t stop there! Each of these bags comes with spinner wheels that can turn 360 degrees while rolling, making maneuvering through the airport gates so much easier. Material-wise, this collapsible luggage bag is made of heavy-duty fabric that is claimed to be both water and tear-resistant.

Dimensions: Folded 17 x 13 x 5 inches – Unfolded 28 inches

  • It has a whopping capacity of up to 28 inches.

  • Need to pack heavy stuff on the bottom of the bag to keep it balanced.

A multifunctional bag that’s extremely light on the pocket is how we would describe this foldable travel duffel bag. One of the main reasons WANDF Foldable Travel Duffel Bag makes it to our list of best foldable travel bags is the price. This one will suit you if you’re not looking to spend too much on a backup bag.

This bag is crafted from high-quality water-resistant fabric and can be used for multiple purposes. It meets the carry-on regulations of Spirit Airlines and other major carriers. Furthermore, the pouch which the bag folds into can slide over the handle of a trolley for easy transportation. Reinforced straps and sturdy zippers add to the sturdy construction of this lightweight bag.

Dimensions: Folded 7 x 7 x 7 inches – Unfolded 17.7 x 12.6 x 6.3 inches

  • This multifunctional bag can be used for gym, travel, and everything in between.
  • We love the durable, high-quality water-resistant fabric.
  • It meets the carry-on regulations of major airlines.
  • Promising durability, it features reinforced straps and sturdy zippers.
  • Don’t expect this bag to work like magic at the price you pay. It would probably be a good idea to reinforce the seams, just in case.

Available in dark and neutral colorways, the Gonex 60L Packable Duffle Bag is a nice option for those who want fashionable foldable bags for travel without looking tacky. Crafted from water-resistant and durable honeycomb nylon fabric, this multipurpose bag will serve you well on your travels. You can fold it away into a self-containing pouch, keep it on standby, or use it as a regular travel duffel bag.

Besides rating this as one of the best foldable travel bags, we also think it’s one of the best travel duffel bags. We like that there’s a separate shoe compartment and multiple pockets with a spacious main compartment. You can put a lot into this bag with this organizational space. Meanwhile, the two firm handles will give you grab-and-go portability. In addition, it also has a shoulder strap for additional flexibility.

Dimensions: Folded 11 x 10 x 1.6 inches – Unfolded 24 x 14 x 9 inches

  • Many people love its durable, water-resistant fabric.
  • There’s a separate shoe compartment.
  • We love how the shoulder strap is adjustable.
  • It comes with a self-containing pouch to fold and store after use.
  • We find the handles to be super sturdy.
  • If you’re going to be taking this as a backup bag, there are no issues. However, this foldable travel bag may be smaller than the average duffel bag.

When a bag has over 13,000 ratings on Amazon (and still counting), with more than 70% of them being 5 stars, there must be something special about it. We were curious to find out what makes this backpack so special, and we weren’t disappointed. Firstly, the Outlander Packable Backpack has a spacious packing capacity of 33L, which is a good size to carry on luggage. You can also pack it away in your luggage for those extras you want to bring home or use it as a day pack.

Moreover, it has a classic backpack shape with several pockets for better organization. Two front zipper pockets will hold smaller items, while the internal zippered pocket can be used for your travel documents. It also has a roomy main pocket and two side pockets for water bottles or umbrellas. The bag is made from ripstop nylon fabric, meaning it’s both water-resistant and durable. Meanwhile, the durable 2-way abrasion-resistant SBS metal zippers move smoothly to keep your bag secure. Finally, this foldable travel backpack also comes in a wide range of colors.

Dimensions: Folded 6.29 x 5.9 x 2 inches – Unfolded 19 x 13 x 8.2 inches

  • The water-resistant rip-stop nylon fabric is durable.
  • We love the addition of the 2-way abrasion-resistant SBS metal zippers.
  • There are multiple pockets.
  • In addition, there are side pockets for bottles as well.
  • It comes complete with a carabiner clip.
  • It may not stand up to the rigors of the outdoors a regular backpack.

Another foldable bag for travel that ranks high in the reviews is the Canway 65L Foldable Weekender Bag . We weren’t too surprised with the positive reviews as this bag looks great and is also highly durable. The waterproof and tear-resistant fabric is made from 600D polyester fabric. Also, you can be sure that this bag will stand up well to the rigors of travel with premium metal SBS zippers and reinforced stress points.

The lightweight duffel has a spacious main compartment and six separate pockets for better organization. What we like the most is the ventilated shoe pocket that can also be used for dirty laundry! Moreover, the sturdy padded handles and detachable strap make the bag easy to transport. It also has a sleeve to attach to a bigger trolley bag. Oh, we also like the fact that the bag comes with a two-year warranty. Anything that has a warranty reflects the company’s commitment to a good product!

Dimensions: Folded 10.6 x 9.4 x 3.9 inches – Unfolded 26.3 x 13.7 x 12.2 inches

  • This bag is super spacious and has multiple pockets.
  • There is a separate ventilated side pocket for shoes.
  • The 600D polyester fabric is extremely durable.
  • It comes with sturdy padded handles and a detachable strap.
  • There’s also a sleeve to fit onto bigger luggage.
  • A two-year warranty backs it.
  • The lack of a sturdy base tends to make the bag fold in the center when full.

Be it for camping, air travel, or road trips, REDCAMP 96 L Extra Large Duffle Bag is the right choice when looking for alternatives to the best collapsible suitcase. This foldable luggage bag is only 8 inches long when folded. So easy to carry and store! Yet, its 96 L volume also gives you the option to use it as your main luggage. That’s way bigger than most weekender bags for travel you can find.

Moreover, its material is water-resistant. So, you don’t have to worry about carrying this bag in drizzling rain when moving from one campsite to another. If somehow water seeps in or if you find any unexpected damage to this bag, you can always return it to REDCAMP and get a new one! This is as long as it’s under 365 days. Yep, this bag comes with a full-year warranty! Not a bad deal, isn’t it?

Dimensions: Folded 8 x 9 inches – Unfolded 31 x 12 x 16 inches

  • The water-resistant allows you to carry the bag when raining.
  • There are various choices of colors available.
  • This bag is compact when folded, making it easy to carry and store.
  • It’s backed by a one-year warranty.
  • It has up to 96 L of capacity.
  • As much as we love this bag, it’s not suitable for heavy loads as the handles aren’t made for heavy lifting.

The Narwey for Spirit Airlines Foldable Duffle Bag is ideal for carrying back your souvenirs. It’ll also serve you well as a personal item on a flight. It fits the personal item size of Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines. Not to mention, you can safely place it under the seat in front of you. The bag is spacious enough to fit your necessities if you choose to take it as under-seat travel luggage. Small items like travel documents can be stored in the external storage pocket.

This is one of the best foldable travel bags because of its thick water-resistant fabric and functionality. Many others agree with us, too, as the bag currently has more than 16,000 reviews on Amazon. You’re kind of spoilt for choice as well. That’s because this bag is available in a variety of colors. Meanwhile, the attached pouch into which the bag folds can slide over the handle of a trolley bag. Also, the sturdy straps and detachable shoulder strap make it easy to carry.

Dimensions: Folded 7.5 x 6.7 x 2.5 inches – Unfolded 17.7 x 12.6 x 6.3 inches

  • It features a durable, water-resistant fabric.
  • This bag also comes with sturdy reinforced straps plus a detachable shoulder strap.
  • It has a bag strap.
  • We love how it fits the new specifications of Spirit Airlines.
  • This works well as a backup bag but would not hold up well as a regular travel bag.

Best Duffle Bag. Featherlight and versatile, this Paravel Foldable Travel Duffle Bag folds down into a compact little pouch that can be packed into your main luggage. It’s a great bag to take along for those last-minute souvenirs or gifts. We think this bag looks pretty good, too, with its contrasting straps. Because of this, it looks like it costs way more than it actually is! Not so bad, isn’t it?

Moreover, you have the option to use this foldable luggage bag over your shoulder or slide it over the handle of your rolling luggage. The smart trolley sleeve makes this possible. Also, we have to talk about the material. Made from lightweight, durable nylon with reinforced cotton webbing handles and sturdy zippers, you can be sure this one will stand up to the stress of travel.

Dimensions: Folded 9.75 x 8 x 2.75 inches – Unfolded 18 x 11 x 11.5 inches

  • Though featherlight, this bag is surprisingly durable.
  • It’s made from durable nylon.
  • We love the durability of the reinforced cotton webbing handles.
  • Unlike other cheap options, this bag comes with sturdy zips.
  • The zippered slot could be a little narrow for sliding over certain handles.

Best Backpack. Those familiar with TUMI luggage know that it doesn’t come cheap. However, the luggage stands up really well for daily use or travel. So, if you’re looking to equip yourself with some of the best durable luggage , we recommend investing in TUMI. For women who love carrying a backpack on their travels, this TUMI Voyageur Just In Case Backpack will definitely win you over. It’s both stylish and practical with a few surprising features. For one, it comes with a convenient back sleeve that slides over rolling luggage, allowing you to juggle fewer bags.

In addition, this backpack can also be folded and stored in a tiny zipper pouch included with the purchase. Thus, you can transport it and access it easily! Though lightweight, this bag is surprisingly sturdy, and we love how big the main compartment is. Not to mention, the backpack straps are highly adjustable, too. Made from durable nylon with sturdy zippers, you can be sure that this backpack won’t go wrong. To know more about this item, check out findmeabackpack.com’s review !

Dimensions: Unfolded 15.5 x 12.3 x 4.5 inches

  • It’s crafted from durable nylon.
  • This backpack comes with extra sturdy zippers.
  • It can easily fold into a small zipper pouch.
  • Thanks to the sleeve, you can carry your belongings with only one hand.
  • Some people think this backpack isn’t big enough.

All of the best foldable travel bags listed above are nothing short of impressive. Whether you’re into a foldable luggage bag or looking for the best collapsible suitcase, each of them will surely make your travel way more convenient. However, choosing only one can be a hassle, especially since all of them have different things to offer. To help you out, we’ve picked some of our favorites according to the following criteria:

  • Best Backpack: TUMI Voyageur Just In Case Backpack
  • Best Duffle Bag: Paravel Foldable Travel Duffle Bag
  • Best Suitcase: Verage Foldable Luggage
  • Best Brand: Samsonite Tote-A-Ton 32.5 Inch Duffel

How To Choose The Best Foldable Travel Bags

The first thing that you need to be aware of is what the luggage will be used for. Are you investing in a bag only for souvenirs, or will it be your main carry-on luggage? For someone looking out for a backup bag only for small knick-knacks, it would be best to pick up something durable yet light in the pocket. Look out for something voluminous yet stylish. On the other hand, if the foldable luggage will be a part of your main luggage, you need to note other factors.

Whatever your reasons for investing in a foldable travel bag, you want to be sure that it can fold down as promised. There’s no point in spending on something labeled ‘foldable’ only to realize that it doesn’t fold back once opened. If you’re going to invest in the best collapsible suitcase or collapsible luggage bag, check out the folded dimensions to know where to store it once you’re done with your travels.

The size you pick depends on what it will be used for. You don’t want to buy something too big or too small, even if it’s only going to be used as a backup. If this bag is going to be carried on luggage, make sure that you’re aware of specified airline dimensions.

Unless you’re looking out for a ‘use and throw’ foldable travel bag, you’ll want to invest in something durable. Good quality makes all the difference in how long a bag will last. Water and tear-resistant materials should top your list of what to look out for.  Bags made from ripstop nylon, high-denier polyester, Cordura, or ballistic nylon are the way to go. Look out for reinforced stitching and sturdy handles. Sturdy zippers are equally important as you don’t want your bag gaping open if the zipper breaks. Even with a souvenir bag, you want to make sure that the stitching is strong. Who wants the bag suddenly splitting open at the seams once it’s packed?

Style is a personal choice as this depends on individual preferences. Foldable travel bags are available in various styles, as enumerated above. If you prefer the grab-and-go option, then a foldable tote or duffel would be your best bet. However, if you’d rather have their hands free, you should look out for a foldable backpack. The advantage of investing in a fold-down suitcase or bigger bag is its flexibility. These bags can be opened up all the way to be used as check-in luggage or folded down to be taken as carry-on luggage. The biggest disadvantage with these bags is that your items are not easily accessible.

Even if you carry a foldable bag as a backup, don’t look for something cheaply made. There’s no point in buying a bag every few months. Pick something durable to stand up to the rigors of travel. You never know when that foldable bag will become a lifesaver. Imagine how terrible it would be if you bought a cheap bag only to have it rip apart on the very first use. Spend wisely so that luggage is the least of your problems when traveling.

The standard carry-on luggage allowed on a flight is 22  x  14  x  19 inches; the size differs from one airline to the next. Check the baggage policy of the airline you’re flying with to be sure. Below are the permitted carry-on luggage sizes of some popular airlines.

Personal items are generally much smaller than your regular luggage. These include purses, a tote or beach bag, a laptop bag, or a briefcase. Limit the size of your personal item if you want to avoid baggage fees. If you carry something too big, you may be charged for it. Strollers and diaper bags are also considered to be personal items by most airlines.

While investing in a foldable travel bag is unnecessary, it’s always good to carry one with you. A foldable bag will occupy a tiny space in your luggage. You can take it out later to carry your dirty laundry or pack your extra shopping. As regular luggage, these bags can be stowed easily after use.

You don’t want to compromise on the price of luggage of any kind. If you’re going to be using the foldable bag as luggage, don’t scrimp on the price. The price is irrelevant if the bag has the features you’re looking for and serves the purpose. However, it would be best to keep in mind that all luxury bags do not live up to the hype. A highly-priced bag may give out by the end of the trip. You’ll sometimes be surprised by how good the best budget luggage sometimes is.  We don’t recommend going overboard with the spending if the bag will only be used as a backup.

The Cotopaxi Uyuni is one of the most versatile foldable travel bags out there. While it doesn’t have any special storage features, it lies completely flat and takes up minimal space under a bed, making it easy to stow it. I love this backpack-duffel hybrid because the backpack straps snap under a flap, so they don’t get in the way if you want to use the shoulder strap. The 46-liter size works well as a carry-on.

Dimensions: 20 x 11.25 x 5 inches, folds flat.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag

Lightweight, foldable, and perfect for stashing in your travel bag, a packable backpack offers all the space you need for days trips and other excursions.

Made from strong and waterproof material, these little backpacks can hold up to 35 liters of your most essential items and can be folded up into their own zippered pocket or pouch when not in use.

The best daypack for your everyday adventures will be the one that best suits your individual requirements. Before you buy, consider the following:

Packable Backpack

Daypacks aren’t designed to carry all the clothing you need for a week away, but they should offer enough space to carry an extra layer or 2, as well as your water bottle , tablet , and other essentials .

Most daypacks offer between 15 and 25 liters of useful storage space , and although they are basic, they still come with zippered pockets and inner compartments.

Your daypack may be lightweight, but it should still be strong enough to be able to hold your laptop, books, and other heavier items without weighing you down.

In order to fold up nice and compact, your daypack will need to be made of thin and flexible material. On that basis, it will also be much lighter than your regular backpack or carry-on .

When it comes to daypacks, the lighter, the better, so look for bags that weigh less than 8 ounces when empty . Some ultralight models may even weigh as little as 3 ounces, making them an excellent choice for more extreme adventurers.

Portability

The very notion of a packable backpack is that you can fold it up nice and small and stash it away when not in use. All of the lightweight backpacks we have chosen can either be folded up and popped into their own separate travel pouch or folded in on themselves to fit into a zippered pocket.

Packable Backpack Pockets

Basic design doesn’t have to be impractical, and all of our favorite packable backpacks come complete with additional pockets to keep your gear well-organized. With zippered external pockets, you can enjoy quick and easy access to your most used items, while internal pouches and pockets let you keep your valuables safe.

Bottom Line: As these backpacks are most commonly used when you are out exploring, they almost always come with dedicated mesh water bottle pockets on the sides.

Shoulder Straps

Packable Backpack Straps

Despite their feather-light dimensions, a good, packable backpack should be a comfortable carry, even when full. Some come with breathable mesh straps , while others are lightly padded. Some more advanced models may also come with a sternum strap to help evenly distribute the weight of your belongings while you walk.

A foldable backpack can be called on when what you need is a “less is more” solution. Lightweight, easy to carry, and even easier to store when not in use, these beauties offer all the practicality of a regular backpack without the weight.

Resistant to the elements, comfortable to carry, and designed to look anything but cheap, a packable backpack is a must-have item for sightseeing, shopping, beach trips, and day hikes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are packable backpacks.

As the name suggests, packable backpacks are bags that can be folded or rolled down and packed away in your main luggage. They are perfect for days out as they are lightweight and space-saving.

What is the capacity of a packable backpack?

Packable backpacks are mainly used as daypacks and will usually have a capacity of around 15 to 25 liters.

Are packable backpacks as comfortable as regular backpacks?

What you gain in portability you lose in comfort when it comes to packable backpacks versus regular backpacks. As they need to fold down and pack easily, they lack the padding on the back and straps that regular backpacks have.

What features should I look for in a packable backpack?

In addition to how small the backpack compresses down to, you should also look at organizational features, sternum straps, and breathability.

The Best Packable Daypack for Travel

The Away The Packable Backpack, one of our picks for best packable daypacks for travel.

Packable daypacks are a perfect option if you need a lightweight spare bag to stash inside your luggage when you travel. They’re also great if you need an extra bag while running an unexpected errand during your daily commute.

After testing 18 packable daypacks, we chose four lightweight, portable, well-constructed bags to fit a variety of situations, including traveling, hiking, and commuting.

Although every trip has its specific considerations, the bags we recommend share a few similar qualities. All of them are water resistant to some degree, pack down small enough to fit easily into a carry-on bag, and hold at least 20 liters comfortably. We picked a bag for city travelers , a pack good enough for daily use , and a lightweight bag that stays dry in stormy weather . For space-conscious travelers, we have a pick that fits in the palm of your hand .

The research

Why you should trust us, compact and comfortable: away the packable backpack, more structure: waterfield packable backpack, a lightweight bag to carry in the rain: matador freerain22 waterproof packable backpack, a pack that fits in your palm: sea to summit ultra-sil day pack, how we picked and tested, other good packable bags, the competition.

I’ve covered travel luggage and bag design for Wirecutter for nine years and have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time.

For this guide, I built on previous years of experience and research by a writer and two editors who have, among them, worked remotely from every continent except Antarctica.

We developed our earliest criteria for this piece after doing an interview with Sara Morrow, an archaeologist who spends summers working expeditions on a small island off the coast of Ireland. She uses a packable daypack to transport her tools, notebooks, and personal items between the base camp and dig sites, and she considers it a necessity in the field.

Personally, I try to pack lightly and almost always travel with at least one packable bag to use on small day journeys once I’ve reached my destination.

The Away The Packable Backpack, one of our picks for best packable daypacks for travel.

Away The Packable Backpack

Compact and comfortable.

Remarkably light and easy to compress, this bag ticks all the boxes for daily use while traveling: comfortable, quietly stylish, and sturdy.

Buying Options

Who this is for: It’s a good option for anyone who wants a packable bag that takes up as much space as a pair of socks but is still comfortable. Its casual look is also unlikely to draw attention when you’re walking around.

Away’s The Packable Backpack is made of a blend of light recycled nylon, with classic, if somewhat minimal, good looks.

It doesn’t weigh much, and it’s comfortable to wear. On your shoulders, the only thing that sets this bag apart from a regular backpack is the lack of structure, a side effect of the bag’s 7-ounce weight. It doesn’t have the same reassuring heft of a traditional backpack (no packable bag does), but when it’s filled with a few odds and ends, its wide straps and sensible shape are comfortable to carry on your back. To save on weight, Away designed the top of the bag like a cinch tote with a flip cover—a simple and effective solution.

It packs up small. When not in use, it rolls up and fits into a separate zippered pouch; it’s about the size of a bunched-up heavy T-shirt.

It’s well made and well priced. For a bag of this quality, it’s an excellent bargain. Away uses the same materials in similarly designed packable tote and sling bags, which we recommend if you’re looking for packable options that aren’t backpacks.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

A minor quibble is the lack of internal organization beyond the one small, zippered wallet pocket. If you need more organization, the WaterField Packable Backpack has another front pocket and bottle holders. But it’s such a small complaint for bags in this category that it’s hard to call it a flaw.

  • Expanded dimensions: 18.1 by 11 by 5.9 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 7 by 4.5 by 2.5 inches
  • Weight: 7 ounces
  • Capacity: 19 liters
  • Warranty: 100-day return and one-year warranty

A black WaterField Packable Backpack, one of our picks for best packable daypacks for travel.

WaterField Packable Backpack

A more structured pack.

Slightly heavier weight and more-advanced materials give this backpack a reassuring heft and impressive water resistance—and a high price tag. It’s comfortable enough to use as your daily backpack.

Who this is for: Anyone who values a slightly mature look with extra durability and protection from the rain will appreciate this pack. However, it is our most expensive pick.

The WaterField Packable Backpack is a well-built travel backpack that marries the heft of a regular backpack with the compactness of an easy-to-pack tote.

It looks and feels like a regular backpack. In addition to being the most traditional-looking backpack of our picks, it feels the most like a traditional backpack. The shoulder straps, which are ergonomically shaped and lined with breathable mesh fabric, make the bag easier to carry over long distances.

It has more organization. WaterField’s Packable Backpack has a front zippered pocket and two open side pockets that could hold a water bottle and an umbrella. When you’re not using the bag, you can fold it down into a built-in packing pocket, which doubles as an interior zippered pocket when the bag is on your back.

Its high performance matches its high price. However, it’s WaterField’s attention to materials that sets this bag apart from our other picks (and increases the overall price). A layer of Taslan nylon—a very thin, but sturdy, fabric—is layered with a structural tricot mesh and a robust water-resistant coating. Water practically bounced away from this bag during testing—even more so than with our pick from Matador —so it’s a good option for wet climates.

  • The Waterfield Packable Backpack weighs about 12 ounces; it’s heavier than our other picks but not by much. The bag holds 16 liters of stuff, which is on the smaller side compared with our other picks but still plenty big for a single traveler on a walk. It doesn’t pack down as small as our other picks.
  • It’s a little tricky to pack into its self-contained pocket. It’s not as simple as just inverting it and stuffing away to your heart’s content. You have to do a series of particular folds to pack the bag properly, which WaterField shared in a video . There’s a fine line between portability and irritability, and this bag cuts that line very close.
  • Expanded dimensions: 15 by 11 by 6 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 9 by 9 by 3 inches
  • Weight: 12 ounces
  • Capacity: 16 liters
  • Warranty: “practical lifetime” repair or replacement

A person wearing a black Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack.

Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack

A lightweight bag to carry in the rain.

This bag will keep your things dry during adventures in wet climates or unpredictable weather. It packs down to about the size of a potato, but its lack of overall structure isn’t ideal for long hikes or days of carrying.

Who this is for: If you need a spare lightweight bag that can stand up to the elements while taking up very little space, the Freerain22 backpack is for you.

The Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack is excellent in wet climates or anywhere where you might realistically expect to get caught in the rain—think hiking around Seattle or touring London in the fall.

Close-up of a person wearing the Matador Freerain 24 2.0 to show the water bottle holder on the side of the backpack.

It’s mini but mighty. The Freerain22 backpack folds down so small—to about the size of a pocket camera—that it feels like a magic trick. Made from 30-denier abrasion-resistant Cordura nylon (denier is a measure of the fiber thickness in a fabric), it kept our things dry even in a rainstorm, although a small amount of humidity and moisture did get in on occasion while we were hiking around Hawaii. The main compartment opens and closes with a roll top that buckles down on the sides like a dry bag. It’s the best possible design if you’re serious about keeping out water.

It’s versatile—to a point. During our testing, it worked well for travel and on the trail, as long as we didn’t try to carry too much, too far. This pack’s mesh shoulder straps, though very breathable and wide enough to distribute the weight, are like two pieces of hosiery: barely there. And though they are wide enough to resist pinching, a thin strip of fabric can only do so much to protect your clavicles. In addition to using this pack for travel and hikes, we also liked to throw the Freerain22 pack into a jacket pocket in case it rained during commutes around town.

It has some nice extras. Along with a sternum strap, removable hip strap, and loops to hold trekking poles or ice axes, it has two side pockets for water bottles, with side buckles for securing the containers in place, and a zippered front pocket. Other than that, it doesn’t have much organization. But that’s not why you buy a bag like this. The Freerain22 backpack is best as a just-in-case bag. It’s so small that you can bring it with you everywhere, and when you need it, you’ll be glad you have it.

  • The compromises that are necessary to shrink a bag this small also become its flaws. The shoulder straps are so thin and insubstantial that it’s impossible for the Freerain22 backpack to be comfortable over long distances, especially when you’re carrying more than 10 pounds.
  • Some of our testers also found that the shoulder straps, though adjustable, were so long that they couldn’t get the straps short enough to fit their shoulders and frame.
  • It’s not as structured as our other picks—it feels more like a reusable shopping bag on your back. If you want a stiffer, more traditional backpack feel, consider the WaterField Packable Backpack .
  • Expanded dimensions: 19.5 by 11 by 9.5 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 5 by 3 inches (length by diameter)
  • Weight: 6.6 ounces
  • Capacity: 22 liters
  • Warranty: one-year repair or replacement

A person wearing a yellow and gray Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day Pack.

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Travel Day Pack

A pack that fits in your palm.

Toss this lightweight, phone-size packable bag into your luggage or coat pocket, and you’ll never get caught without a spare bag again. If you need something to carry more often, though, you might prefer one of our more structured picks.

Who this is for: It’s fantastic for anyone who needs a light, spare bag that they can take with them anywhere, anytime.

The Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day Pack is perfect to keep in your pocket or in the glove compartment of your car—it’s handy for when, say, you need a spare bag at the market.

Close-up of a person holding a folded Ultra-Sil Day Pack in the palm of their hand.

It’s our most packable pick. The Ultra-Sil pack is the smallest and lightest packable backpack we recommend. Packed up, it’s very discreet: nearly the size of a keychain accessory.

It’s tougher than it looks. The bag itself is a no-frills sack made from a paper-thin siliconized Cordura nylon, which means it’s very light and water resistant. It has reinforced stitching at stress points, so it can carry more weight than you would expect. That said, since this pack is made of such thin, light material, carrying large or awkwardly shaped loads is somewhat uncomfortable, especially when compared with our more-structured picks.

  • With a bag this small and light, any flaw is an aspect of its narrowly engineered use. Are the shoulder straps thin? Of course! Would it be nice if this bag—which deploys from a small sack that fits in the palm of your hand—had more back padding? Yes. But that would also make it larger and heavier. If you’re not willing to trade some comfort to get the smallest possible carry, this isn’t the bag for you.
  • The bag also won’t keep your things dry in the rain like some of our other picks, such as the Waterfield Packable Backpack or the Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack .
  • Expanded dimensions: 19 by 11 by 8 inches (height by width by depth)
  • Packed dimensions: 3.5 by 2 by 1.5 inches
  • Weight: 2.5 ounces
  • Capacity: 20 liters
  • Warranty: lifetime repair or replacement

Several packable daypacks we tested, shown side by side.

Depending on whether you plan to scale cliffs or tour museums , certain features become more or less important when you’re choosing a day bag.

To help make sense of what to prioritize among the dozens of available options, we pored over articles across many outdoor publications and consulted other comparative reviews and advice from sources such as REI and GearLab .

We also considered our own experiences to determine what makes a great packable daypack. Here’s what we look for:

  • Weight and size: The whole point of a packable daypack is that it packs well, so weight and compressed size are important factors. Carrying capacity generally correlates to the weight and size of a bag, except in more explicitly technical packs, which may cut down on weight by using lighter, but more expensive, materials.
  • Ergonomic features: Stowable daypacks can look and feel like stuff sacks with straps, or they can be full, ergonomically shaped backpacks. The wearability of a bag usually comes down to its load distribution and support system (such as the sternum strap on the Matador Freerain22 Waterproof Packable Backpack ).
  • Organization: Most packable daypacks come with at least two compartments—the largest, or main, compartment and the (often attached) pouch into which the whole pack stows away. Beyond those, an external pocket that can hold small, frequent-use items (such as keys) or sleeves for water bottles are useful. The drawback of adding more organization is that it decreases the packability of a bag and often contributes to weight.
  • High-quality materials: Because a packable daypack needs to be able to carry at least some weight when in use but still fold up for storage, materials make the difference between a lightweight pack that feels cheap and flimsy versus one that you feel confident filling to the max and carrying into a rainstorm. The fabrics and composite materials used in higher-quality bags are light and durable but remain nearly invulnerable to water.
  • 15- to 25-liter capacity: This seems to be the ideal range for a pack that can hold a full day’s worth of stuff while remaining reasonably lightweight and portable. It’s enough to accommodate a 13-inch laptop, along with some rain protection, a camera, an extra layer of clothing, and whatever else you might need for a day about town.
  • Weather resistance and durability: Although a few bags we liked, such as the Matador Freerain22 pack and the WaterField Packable Backpack , come extremely close, total waterproofing is a lot to ask of any lightweight bag. At a minimum, a pack should provide enough protection to keep you and your gear dry through at least a few minutes of wet weather. The better packs often feature more-careful construction, which is visible in details such as sealed and tighter stitching (our pick from Matador), self-sealing YKK zippers (our pick from Away), and reinforced bottoms (our pick from WaterField).

If you’re planning some heavy excursions and looking for the absolute best equipment: You might consider the Hyperlite Summit 30 . It’s a remarkable piece of equipment, a full-size 30-liter backpack weighing only 0.8 pounds. Made of Dyneema composite fabric, Hyperlite backpacks are highly water resistant and long-lasting. And each one folds up to take the same space as a couple of T-shirts. Most people looking for a spare travel bag don’t need a $200 ultralight backpack designed for hiking. But for a rare type of traveler, the Summit 30 might be the best choice.

If you need a heavy-duty bag for hiking: The Matador Beast28 Ultralight Technical Backpack is a capable hiking daypack that’s hydration-bladder compatible, but not everyone needs a packable bag this hefty. Alone, it’s 1.25 pounds, which is heavier than any of our picks. For the price, we prefer the simplicity of our other picks. But the Beast28 is a good bag, albeit with a large footprint even when it’s packed up.

If none of our picks are available: Consider the REI Co-op Flash 18 Pack , another decent choice in the sub-$50 cinch-top-bag category. It’s a fine alternative, but for a little more money you get a lot more value with our other choices.

Aer Go Pack 2 : The previous version was a pick, but the current model is too bulky to be packable; it takes up more space in your suitcase than would ever be worth it on a trip.

Cotopaxi Luzon 18L Backpack : This is a decent small backpack, but the drawstring closure top kept this out of consideration. Not only are drawstrings a hazard if they slip out, but they are prone to breaking, and the cinch closure is useless against bad weather.

Dakine Packable Backpack 22L : These are tempting bags, especially for the price. But the fabric (115-denier recycled nylon) feels thin and underwhelming—although it’s Bluesign approved, which we like. The problem is the bag’s closure, which only has a cinch top. If Dakine added a lid that could close over the design similar to Away’s The Packable Backpack , we’d likely make it a pick.

Eddie Bauer Stowaway Packable 20L Backpack : This bag was previously our runner-up pick for hikers. Its zipper and material felt flimsy enough that we were concerned they would fail with long-term use.

Fjällräven High Coast Foldsack 24 : This is a good bag at a slightly high price, but it didn’t make the cut for us because of its weight and large size even when rolled up.

Gonex 20L Lightweight Packable Backpack : Although it has rave reviews online , we found the stitching was more fragile than we like to recommend.

L.L.Bean Stowaway Pack : The Stowaway Pack was organized and comfortable enough that we liked carrying it on the hiking trail, but we preferred our pick from Matador for its better weatherproofing.

Mystery Ranch In and Out 19 : The In and Out 19 is made of a 100-denier Cordura nylon, which was strong but too heavy for us. The biggest mystery during our testing was how to fold this bag back into its pouch.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack 27L : This is simply a bad design for a tourist. The tote’s large handles, which hang loosely off the back of the bag when it’s worn as a backpack, are a huge red flag for personal safety and security. And all the extra straps and connections make carrying and using the bag a pain.

REI Co-op Stuff Travel Pack - 20L : This is a competitor of the Matador Freerain22 pack that falls short. It mimics our Matador pick in its design, but not in the quality of its materials. Its flimsier fabric and zipper will fail sooner.

Foldable travel bags are a must for any frequent traveler who packs light. They can fit into the pocket of your jacket, but have a capacity of at least 25 liters when unfolded. Samsonite Foldaway Packable Tote Sling Bag, Black, One Size

The Samsonite foldable tote is a great option for travel because it is an underseat tote bag . It’s small which makes a great addition to a carry on suitcase. On top of that, this bag is made from some really sturdy polyester , and it is going to last you a lot longer than a no-name bag with loose stitching.

In general, the materials that this bag is made from really are top-of-the-line, and that is why it’s the best under seat tote you can get.

The external pockets are noteworthy too – there’s a zippered one, and two open pockets, so there’s plenty of room for items you want to have easily accessible. And that’s in addition to the main compartment, which features a zippered closure.

There is one other zippered pocket inside the bag, and that’s it. But, the four pockets of the Samsonite are still a lot more than you will get on most other foldable totes. And the best thing is that this tote costs next to nothing, which is very affordable for such a great and established brand.

One downside of the bag is there are only two grab handles, so you can either sling them over your shoulder or carry them in your hand – like with any regular tote bag. I would have loved to see a longer shoulder strap on the bag, which would allow you to carry it like a crossbody bag.

  • Fits under airplane seats
  • Very durable exterior
  • Four pockets total
  • You can only carry it like a tote
  • Does not have a luggage strap

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

Osprey Ultralight Collapsible Stuff Pack, Tropic Teal

No foldable bag is quite as good as the Osprey Foldable Stuff Pack . The brand is one of the best backpack on the market, and all of their products are high quality . So, if you really want the best foldable backpack, this is the one to get.

The pack is made from durable ripstop nylon  with decent water resistance. It is incredibly lightweight at only 3 ounces, and it’s a carry-on sized backpack, so it’s great for travel. Plus, with a capacity of 18 liters, you will have more than enough room for all your must-have necessities.

The thing I love the most about this pack is that it still has ventilated shoulder straps for your carrying comfort. This is more than you will see on most other backpacks, so it’s already easy to see why Osprey just wipes out the competition.

With dual zippers, you have access to the main compartment from different sides of the backpack. This makes it easily accessible, no matter where you put it in the backpack.

There are a total of three external pockets (two open, one zippered), meaning there’s enough room for all those extra items you want handy at all times.

The only downside of this backpack is that it doesn’t have internal pockets, so organization will be a bit of a challenge. But that problem is easily solved with packing cubes, removable organization panels, and your own laptop sleeve.

  • Breathable mesh on the harness
  • Multiple external pockets
  • Sternum strap not included
  • No internal pockets
  • Dimensions: 17” x 9” x 7”
  • Weight: 3.04 oz
  • Materials: Ripstop nylon

Samsonite Foldaway Duffel

Samsonite Foldaway Packable Duffel Bag, Black, Medium

Samsonite’s Foldaway Duffel is from the same collection as their foldable tote above. I don’t want to be too repetitive, but if you really want the best foldable travel bag that you can get your hands on, Samsonite is one of the safest options.

The duffel is constructed from 600D PU – a very thick polyester fabric, that is super durable and sturdy. There is also nylon lining on the inside, so the bag has double water-resistant protection. This bag also has both a pair of grab handles and a long shoulder strap, which is rare.

There is one pocket on the outside and another on the inside of the bag that it can fold itself into. And the bag has two extra open pockets that are great for items you want to have easy access to.

In addition to that, the main compartment of this bag is extra roomy and is perfect for fitting in all those souvenirs you bought on your trip.

This is actually a carry-on bag, but not an underseat one. You would have to commit to this as your main carry-on item, so remember that if you plan to pack a carry-on suitcase.

The main downside of this foldable travel bag is the price point. It’s not ridiculously expensive, but it is pricier than most other foldable duffels you will see in the rest of the review. However, this bag does have several features you won’t find on those cheaper bags, and it is made from really durable materials, so it’s definitely worth it.

  • Sturdy materials
  • Adjustable shoulder straps
  • Pricier than other foldable duffels
  • Not an underseat bag
  • Dimensions: 8.26” x 11.81” x 21.65”
  • Weight: 0.83 lbs

Bug Travel Duffel Bag

BUG Travel Duffel Bag, Large Duffels for Women Men Weekender Bag, Original Integrated Design Foldable Duffel Bags for Gym Sports Business Trip, Waterproof and Luxury Travel Bag

The Bug travel duffel bag is certainly a unique option. It’s not like any other bag you will see in this review, which is why it deserves to be so high up. It is made from a rather thick, waterproof material , so it’s not going to be as thin and lightweight as most of the other bags you will see in this review.

But those bags won’t be nearly as functional or as good as this one. With durable grab handles, a sturdy shoulder strap, and a trolley sleeve in the back, the Bug duffel is just like any other premium duffel bag you can get – with the advantage of being foldable, that is.

This bag doesn’t actually fold into its own pocket, which is why it’s interesting. It’s more like a jigsaw puzzle – the sidewalls of the bag can all be detached, and then folded one over the other. And those walls are full of different zippered and slip pockets so that you can easily stay organized while you’re traveling.

In fact, the duffel has a total of 7 pockets, in addition to a very roomy main compartment. Depending on the size of the bag that you pick up, it’s either going to have a 30 liter or a 50-liter capacity. The difference in the price between the two is less than $10, so I doubt that’s going to be the deciding factor in which one you get.

But the sizing probably will – be sure to check out the exact dimensions of both bags, in order to be absolutely certain you are getting a travel bag that you will wind up using very often.

  • Unique design
  • Waterproof materials
  • Lots of internal pockets for easy organization
  • Bulkier and heavier than most other foldable bags
  • Dimensions: 19.6” x 9” x 10” (30-liter bag)
  • Weight: 2.6 lbs (30-liter bag)
  • Materials: Waterproof fabric

Kaome 2 in 1 Hanging Toiletry Bag

Here’s another really unique foldable travel bag to consider. The Kaome bag is a hanging toiletry bag , with an abundance of different compartments and pockets that are really great for travel. It’s an awesome bag to have at the hotel room or an AirBnB, where you never have enough room for your toiletries. Ladies with an established skincare routine definitely know what I’m talking about.

The really cool thing about this bag is that some compartments are removable, so you can actually adjust the size and capacity of this foldable bag to suit your needs perfectly. If you remove some of the compartments, the bag is immediately lighter and more packable.

Plus, the two separate compartments have different uses – the detachable one can actually work as a packing cube or a makeup case. The part of the bag that has four sections is great for all your other toiletries, and it even has elastic bands, so that you can attach your phone and watch the news, while you’re trying to make yourself look decent in the mornings.

This is definitely not as lightweight as the foldable totes and duffels that are made from a single sheet of poly, but it’s about a hundred times more functional than them. Plus, you can actually fold this bag two different ways – one turns it into a slim briefcase and the other makes it the size of a purse, so it will still easily fit into your other travel bag.

The Kaome foldable bag is perfect for people who are looking for something that will help them with organization, and not simply a ‘just in case’ bag.

  • Excellent for organized travellers
  • Versatile use
  • Not very packable
  • Capacity isn’t really big
  • Dimensions: 11.4" x 45” (entirely unrolled)
  • Weight: 14.4 oz
  • Materials: Water resistant 300D Oxford

The Travelon folding travel bag is another great option if you’re looking for a tote. It is made from polyester ripstop , which has decent water resistance. But the bag does not have any additional coating, so don’t expect it to be entirely waterproof.

This tote has a spacious main compartment with zipper closure, and it can fit quite a lot of stuff inside. The high capacity is an upside for sure, but the big size of the bag is definitely a downside. The Travelon folding bag is too big to be an underseat bag, so you would have to choose this as your main piece of carry-on luggage. And I don’t think it’s a great option for that.

The main reason for that is the devastating lack of pockets. There’s a single zippered pocket on the outside of the bag, and that’s it. That is the same pocket that the bag folds into when not in use.

But there is something you will like about this bag – the really long grab handles. They are very comfortable for carrying the bag on one shoulder, mostly because you get that extra space so you can put it over bulkier winter clothing.

And you’ll also like that this comes with a trolley sleeve , so you are able to mount it on top of a large suitcase. That’s great for traveling with multiple pieces of luggage since it frees up one of your arms entirely.

In addition to that, this is a good option if you want an affordable folding bag. You can get it for as little as some $15, which is pretty great.

  • Lightweight and affordable
  • Trolley sleeve in the back
  • Extra long grab handles
  • Not many pockets
  • Exterior is not fully waterproof
  • Dimensions: 5.5” x 19” x 15”
  • Weight: 4.8 oz
  • Materials: Polyester ripstop

TUMI - Voyageur Just In Case Backpack

TUMI - Voyageur Just In Case Backpack - Lightweight Foldable Packable Travel Daypack for Women - Black

If you want a premium foldable travel backpack, then Tumi is one of the best options out there. All of their bags are made from high-quality materials , including the Voyager backpack. So, there’s no doubt that you will own this backpack for a long time, and it’s a great choice if you know that you will frequently use it.

But is it actually worth the money? Honestly, no. It’s way too expensive for what it is, but the same can be said about most of Tumi luggage . And you can sense where I’m getting at – it’s all about the branding, and what it means for you to carry a Tumi item. So, if you want to show off and let everyone know that price is never an object, then by all means pick up this awesome pack.

It also doesn’t hurt that this foldable bag is so stylish that it doesn’t even look like it folds down into a tiny pouch. It is a really cute backpack that you could actually carry everywhere, especially when traveling with luggage restrictions.

This travel backpack features a single zippered pocket on the outside and double zipper access to the main compartment. It’s a pretty small backpack, and it will actually fit under most airplane seats, so it’s a great bag to have in addition to a carry-on suitcase.

Another great thing about it is that it features a luggage strap in the back, which makes it super easy to move around with multiple pieces of luggage.

  • Underseat backpack
  • Very durable materials
  • Dimensions: 15.5" x 12.3" x 4.5"
  • Weight: 0.6 lbs
  • Materials: Nylon

WANDF Foldable Travel Duffel Bag

WANDF Foldable Travel Duffel Bag Luggage Sports Gym Water Resistant Nylon (Mint Green)

This foldable duffel is a great option for you that need a quick and cheap solution. It costs about $10, which is a bargain for a bag with 25 liters of capacity . The duffel is a pretty good carry-on – it will fit in overhead compartments of all airplanes, but it won’t always qualify as an underseat bag.

This travel bag is made from water-resistant material, and it is a great bag to just throw in your suitcase, just in case. But it’s not remarkably durable – the material is pretty thin, and zippers are a no-name brand, so don’t expect this bag to last you years. But honestly, that’s fair for the price – you will get your money’s worth even if you use this bag just 5-6 times.

The Wandf foldable duffel is available in a wide variety of different colors, so there are plenty of options for everyone. It has two sturdy grab handles  but lacks the really long shoulder strap you get on most other duffels.

The bag has an external zippered pocket , which is great for stuff you want to have easily accessible. That’s actually the pocket the bag folds into, and it is the only pocket on the bag. The cool thing about it is that it actually doubles as a luggage strap since the top and bottom of the pocket aren’t sewn onto the bag.

The Wandf foldable duffel might not be the best or most functional option out there, but it’s a great affordable option. If you know that you won’t use a foldable bag too often, but want to have something just in case, this duffel is as good an option as any.

  • Very affordable
  • Wide color variety
  • Features a luggage strap
  • No long shoulder strap
  • Not very high quality
  • Dimensions: 17.7” x 12.6” x 6.3”
  • Weight: 7.1 lbs
  • Materials: Water resistant fabric

Travel Lite Foldable Backpack

Travel Lite FOLDABLE LIGHTWEIGHT DURABLE TRAVEL BACKPACK | HIKING BACKPACK | PACKABLE BACKPACK | DAYPACK (Black)

The Travel Lite Foldable backpack is an awesome option for people who want something affordable but very functional . Backpacks are usually the most versatile option because they’re great for almost everything, from the plane to the hiking trail.

This foldable backpack has ventilated shoulder straps, so it is pretty comfortable to wear. There’s one zippered pocket on the outside, as well as two stretchy side pockets that can fit a water bottle each.

One thing I really like about this foldable travel bag is that it is actually really good quality for the price. The seams are really well sewn , and they will not come apart easily. And the fabric the bag is made from is water-resistant and will keep all your belongings dry in light rain. The zippers are the only thing I’m not a huge fan of since they are kind of flimsy.

The really cool thing about this foldable travel bag is that you can wear it like both a backpack and a tote . Just fold the top part of the bag inside the bottom, and you get a cute little tote that you can just sling over one shoulder. And you can even turn it into a small purse – you will just need a cute, thin shoulder strap.

If you want to fully fold this down, just stuff everything in that front zippered pocket. That’s a lot of versatility and function for some $10, so it’s a pretty great bag even if it’s not the best quality out there.

Pro-tip – the pink version of this travel bag is slightly see-through, so avoid that one if you want to keep the contents of your bag a mystery. The other three colors are entirely opaque.

  • Can be worn as a backpack, purse and tote
  • Water resistant exterior
  • Really affordable
  • Zippers are a bit flimsy
  • Dimensions: (backpack) 14.6” x 5.9” x 17.7”

Narwey Foldable Travel Duffle Bag Tote

For Spirit Airlines Foldable Travel Duffel Bag Tote Carry on Luggage Sport Gym Duffle for Men and Women (Black)

If you want a foldable travel bag that doesn’t actually look like one, the Narwey Duffel Bag is a really good option. Its exterior is made from durable nylon , which is colored and looks really good. The bag is water-resistant, and it will keep the items inside dry in some light rain. On top of that, the zippers on the bag are actually really sturdy and smooth – a really good feature for a $15 bag!

This duffel is kind of big, but it is carry-on sized. It won’t be accepted as an underseat bag on most airlines though – Spirit and Frontier are the only two that will qualify the bag as a personal item.

There is one zippered pocket on the duffel, which is actually the same pocket the bag folds into. It is pretty big, so great for items you want to have easily accessible. And it doubles as a luggage sleeve since it is not fully sewn onto the bag.

One thing I really like about this foldable travel bag is that a longer shoulder strap is included in the purchase. You can carry this in your hands, or you could sling it over your shoulders. The important thing is that you do have the option, which isn’t the case with some other, cheaper bags.

The total capacity of this bag is 30 liters , which is pretty good for a carry-on bag. Especially since the capacity of an average carry-on suitcase isn’t really much more than that.

  • Water and tear resistant exterior
  • Large capacity
  • Very few airlines will qualify it as a personal item
  • Dimensions: 17” x 14” x 7”
  • Weight: 11.6 oz

What To Look For

What kind of bag.

Collapsible travel bags have one thing in common – they pack down into one of their pockets so that they can fit into the pocket when you’re not using them. But once you unpack them you want – a backpack, a duffel bag , or a simple tote?

Foldable bags come in many different shapes, so it’s important to know what exactly you want from one. I’ve included backpacks, totes, and duffel bags , as these three are the most common types of foldable travel bags that exist.

Duffel bags are the best option if you’re prioritizing high capacity . You will often find foldable duffels that have a capacity of more than 50 liters, which is perfect for people who have to carry a lot of gear while they’re traveling.

On the other hand, backpacks are the best option if you want a bag that’s really easy to carry . They’re perfect for people who want to have full use of their hands while they’re out and about in their travels, and they give you the option of carrying some really heavy items, without actually feeling their full weight.

Totes are somewhere in between backpacks and duffels. They usually have pretty high capacities due to the shape, but with the same organizational capability, you get in a backpack. One, maybe two pockets, and that’s it. They’re the best option for ladies who are used to carrying a tote bag and want to get something that will actually look okay with their outfits, and not like a scrunched-up piece of nylon.

And I included a couple of very unique foldable bags, which aren’t really the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a packable bag. If you’re willing to experiment and want something extra durable and sturdy, I highly recommend you pick up one of those.

Materials And Durability

Most of the bags featured here are made from either polyester or nylon because those two materials are perfect for these bags. They are lightweight , packable, pretty durable, and very easy to maintain.

Nylon is generally a bit more durable than polyester, but that’s not always the case – it heavily depends on the thickness of the material , as well as whether or not a bag has any additional water repellent coating.

The best bags are made from really thick nylon/polyester (400D and up), and will at least be water-resistant.

Additionally, I did include a couple of bags that are made from other materials – these are sturdier, but not as lightweight or packable as the poly/nylon ones.

So, think about what you’re prioritizing – packability or durability ? If you’re okay with a bag that’s a bit heavier but still foldable, then consider going for one of the unique choices I’ve featured.

It’s fair to say that almost all of the bags featured here are affordable . Sure, some are cheaper than others, but the vast majority of the foldable travel bags are under $30. Meaning that you don’t have to spend a lot of money if you want to get a foldable Samsonite bag.

I did include some pricier options, but those are for a very specific type of traveler. And I’ve also included some really cheap options, for people who don’t really care about the features of a particular foldable bag – they just want something they can throw in the suitcase, and which won’t take up a lot of space in the luggage.

So, there are options on both sides of the spectrum. But the vast majority of the bags are in the middle of it, with a price point that is considered affordable by most people.

Best Foldable Travel Bag: Our Top Choices

Not quite sure which of these foldable travel bags is the right for you? Go with one of our favorite bags then – there’s one in each category!

The best foldable duffel bag would have to be the Bug Travel Duffel . The unique design is just amazing, and it without a doubt outperforms all of the other duffels in this review. And not just because of the incredibly sturdy and durable materials, but because of the abundance of pockets, you get on the bag.

That, compared to the one zippered pocket of most other duffels, is reason enough to pick up the Bug.

  • LARGE DUFFEL BAG: The size of this duffel is 19.6”(L) X 9”(w) X 10”(H), about 30 L, 1 big and 7 small pockets totally. With its large space and functional design, you can take a lot of things on your trip;
  • UNIQUE DESIGN: We use integrated zipper design which is foldable after you pushing the zippers open completely. You can just put it in your luggage and take out when you need to carry more things, very portable;

If you would prefer a foldable backpack , then go with Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack . The brand is known for manufacturing outstanding backpacks, and this is without a doubt the best foldable backpack you can get your hands on.

The ripstop nylon is really durable, while the ventilated harness will keep you cool on hot, sweaty days. And the pack has several external pockets, which will help you organize some of your smaller belongings.

  • Premium efficiency and design
  • Storage tuned to the each season

In case you’re looking for a simple foldable travel tot e, your best option is the Samsonite Tote . It’s made from really thick polyester and it is lined on the inside, so it is much more durable than the cheaper alternatives.

Plus, the tote has several external pockets , so you will be able to have some items easily accessible at all times. And it is an underseat bag, so you can bring it on a plane in addition to your carry-on suitcase.

  • Constructed of sturdy 600 denier PU
  • Large main opening easily stores all extra souvenirs acquired during travel

Those are the top three foldable travel bags we recommend. Head over to Amazon to see the prices and color options of all the bags featured in this review.

The Travel Backpack That Oprah Loves Folds Down Into a Small Pouch — and It's Guaranteed to Sell Out Quickly

Each year, we patiently wait for Oprah’s Favorite Things list to drop — a gift guide of all the products she covets and swears by.. And we pay special attention when Oprah endorses something that makes traveling just that much easier. This year, she’s spotlighted a revolutionary travel backpack she loves, and while bringing a tote on vacation is always a classic choice, the talk show hosts’s favorite backpack is perfect for long walking days or outdoor excursions?

What makes the Paravel Fold-Up Travel Backpack enough of a standout to catch the eye of Oprah, herself? We’re betting on the fact that it has plenty of pockets and is also equipped with a trolley sleeve to easily attach to the handle of your suitcase to make maneuvering through an airport, train station, or city seamless. However, Oprah did reveal to Oprah Daily one unique feature that overpackers and souvenir shoppers will love: “Its party trick is that it can fold up into a zippable pouch you can stow away in your luggage, so you have an extra bag.”

The best news? You don’t have to spend a fortune to mimic Oprah’s style. Right now, you can get the bag at a 20-percent discount for just $52. This is a backpack so practical, we would be snatching it up even without the sale price.

To buy: amazon.com ,  $52 (originally $65)

One of the bag’s standout features is its composition. Oprah highlighted that the Paravel Travel Backpack is constructed of “lightweight, water-resistant nylon” made from 15 upcycled plastic water bottles, which won’t weigh you down on travel days and will keep your belongings safe and dry, even in light showers.

Sling it over your shoulders for hands-free airport navigation, and use the convenient front pocket to stash items you’ll need easy access to, such as your passport, phone, and ticket.  The soft cotton webbing shoulder straps won’t dig uncomfortably and the top handle makes it a breeze to lift from underneath a plane seat or out of an overhead bin. And if you’re traveling with multiple bags, this backpack can be attached to the handle of your rolling luggage thanks to a handy trolley sleeve.

But, as Oprah mentioned, the big selling point of this bag is that it’s extremely packable. Expanded, the pack meets TSA carry-on requirements for personal luggage. But, when not in use, the backpack zips into a compact, tablet-sized pouch and tucks neatly into a duffel or suitcase. So, if you are in need of a daypack for sightseeing or hiking once you get to your destination, you’re prepared. Not to mention, this bag is even ideal for carrying souvenirs home.

Travelers seem to back up Oprah’s endorsement, giving the backpack glowing reviews on Paravel’s site . One shopper said, “The knapsack is just right for me for toting things locally but also for long trips,” They added, “It is light and folds up into the size of a Kindle. I plan to use it to carry on trips just in case I need to have an extra bag.” Another wrote, “Not only is it attractive, it is roomy and holds a lot of items.” They continued, “It has traveled with me several times to Europe as well as in the states. I've now decided to give it as a gift.”

To buy: amazon.com , $52 (originally $65)

If you’re worried about wear and tear or don’t have an upcoming trip planned to put it to good use, customers note that it’s washable and versatile enough to use beyond vacation. “I can toss it into the wash and use it like new — [it’ll be] fresh, clean, [and] ready to be stuffed full of my gym wear! This bag goes everywhere with me.”

Now that it’s marked down 20 percent, there’s no way you can ignore such a great deal. Good riddance packing qualms with this Oprah-approved  travel backpack .

At the time of publishing, the price was $52.

5 Best 20 Litre Backpacks [2023 Guide]

5 BEST 20 LITRE BACKPACKS

5 BEST 20 LITER BACKPACKS (2023 GUIDE)

Are you looking to get your hands on a top-quality 20-litre backpack? Well, it can be a daunting process. There are so many great 20 litre backpacks on the market, and the variety of choice is overwhelming.

Before you delve into the world of 20-litre packs, it’s crucially important to decide on what you want in a backpack. Are you looking to store your camera gear in there? Or do you want to keep your gym clothes in there?

These are all important questions that you need to answer before you buy a backpack. And guess what? We are here to answer these questions. We have researched and compiled our favourite 20-litre backpacks that are perfect for nomads.

We are nomads too, and we understand the importance of choosing a great backpack. And this article is our guide to the best 20-litre backpacks on the market in 2023.

#1 - AER Duffel Pack 2

AER Duffel Pack 2

The AER Duffel Pack 2 is our first backpack on the list, and it’s an excellent choice for nomads like us. Firstly, if you’re like us, you probably work online and need a laptop or a tablet compartment? Great, this backpack offers a laptop compartment that’s great for digital nomads who need to carry an expensive laptop or tablet with them.

And better still, it has an array of tech compartments which are great for storing an external hard drive and chargers etc. The AER Duffel Pack 2 stays true to its name. It has an excellent duffel style opening that is perfect for the gym.

Do you love to spend your days grinding in the coworking space before heading to the gym for a brutal workout? If so, this backpack is great for either.

It also costs around $170, which is decent value for money. We believe it’s very hard to find better value for money at that price.

Specifications:

Size – 25 litres.

That is the perfect size of an everyday backpack. You have ample space to carry all your daily essentials with you. And room for cameras, laptops, and spare clothes. Twenty-five litres is a great size for many nomads.

We all know a great design is essential, and this backpack won’t disappoint you in this department. It comes in three different colours which include black, grey, and navy blue. Therefore, you get a wide range of styles and colours.

And also, the design is very sleek. It looks great in the office, coworking spots, and professional environments. But it certainly wouldn’t look out of place on an adventurous hike either!

Weight – 2.4lbs

The AER Duffel Pack 2 weighs 2.4 lbs, which is an ideal weight for an everyday backpack. As a nomad who is always travelling, you want a bag that has vast space but the lightest weight possible – and this bag ticks both boxes.

AER Duffel Pack 2 Review

People who purchase AER products know how comfortable the products are. And this product is what you would expect from AER comfort. It’s comfortable, easy to use, and hassle-free.

The bag comes with padded straps which take an enormous amount of pressure off your shoulders. If you have a laptop, clothes, and daily essentials, your bag might weigh a lot. That’s why you want comfortable padded straps, and this bag has precisely that. It’s like having pillows on your shoulders.

The bag comes with YKK Zippers and Cordura nylon, which is the most reputable ballistic nylon in the world. The interior comes with various netted compartments and enough comfort to satisfy the average nomad.

AER Duffel Pack 2 Pros

  • They designed the bag for a particular user profile If you're someone who carries a lot of technology, such as laptops, and you like to go to the gym, this bag is for you.
  • Very comfortable external materials. The exterior materials are incredible, and the designers created them to perfection. The ballistic nylon is fantastic and fabulous for any user.
  • Fantastic comfort The exceptional comfort of this bag is great for any user. The designers made sure it was made for daily use and have fitted the pack with comfort to match. It's also a long pack that helps even the weight around your back and takes the pressure off from those long walks.

AER Duffel Pack 2 Cons

  • Not a full duffle bag Unlike the vast majority of AER bags, AER doesn’t give the option of a full duffle bag. There is no way to remove the straps. Is that a big issue? Probably not. However, they do this for most of their bags, and we can't understand why they didn't do it on this one.
  • Cheap interior materials The exterior materials are fantastic, but it feels like they cut high costs on the interior materials. In truth, they feel a bit cheap. It seems a shame that despite creating an almost perfect exterior, they would cut costs on the interior materials.

#2 - Nomatic Backpack

Nomatic Backpack

The Nomatic brand consistently produces fantastic nomadic backpacks, and they haven’t fallen short on this one. This backpack is the best on the list for business, technology, or laptops. And if you take your business on the road with you, this backpack is the one for you.

The bag is a 270-degree backpack, and Nomatic designed it for entrepreneurs, digital nomads, or anyone who needs to carry their laptop. The bag is perfect for easy access to your technology equipment.

Get the Nomatic Backpack

Due to a trademark issue, Nomatic had to rebrand to ‘Gomatic’ in Europe and the UK. Although the brand name is technically different, both versions sell the exact same high-quality gear 🙂

Furthermore, the backpack has an array of pockets on the inside. You will never have any issues looking for storage space in this pack. It has everything a technology fanatic could want. And even better, numerous compartments are full of storage areas.

It’s easy to see why Nomatic backpacks continue to grow in popularity and are such a popular choice for nomads. This bag costs around $250, so it’s more than some of the other bags, but the quality does make up for it.

– Size – 20 litre (can expand to 24 litres) For many nomads looking for an everyday backpack that is perfect for business, 20 litres will be enough. But the fact the bag can expand up to 24 litres makes it even better. However, the pack isn’t as big as some others on the list – but the organised design perfectly makes up for it.

– Weight – 4 lbs The bag is heavier than others on the list, and 4 pounds isn’t the world’s lightest backpack. However, the great design and ample storage space do compensate for that.

– Price The price of the pack is around $250, which is on the pricier side. But it has to be said that Nomatic pride themselves on the highest quality travel bags and their prices always reflect that.

nomatic backpack

Nomatic bags never fail in the comfort department; the company strives for the best comfort possible. We don’t believe they are as comfortable as AER products, but that doesn’t mean this bag doesn’t tick the comfort boxes on this list. We believe the backpack is quite comfortable, and enough for most nomads.

The bag uses some tremendous materials. The tarpaulin is sleek and leather, and it looks great too. And even better, the bag is water-resistant. If you’re in Southeast Asia, you know how heavily it can rain!

Can you think of anything worse than water ruining your electronics? We can’t, but that’s no issue, as this bag is water-resistant and can withstand wet environments.

Nomatic Backpack Pros

  • The bag offers great organisation If you want a bag that is organised and built for ease, then this is ideal for you. The organisation is fantastic for any digital nomad or traveller who takes their business on the road. You will feel organised and ready to work with this sleek, well-designed, and perfectly organised backpack.
  • A high level of expandability The back has plenty of space anyway, and that's without mentioning the expandability options from 20 to 24 litres. If you want an organised and spacious bag that includes the opportunity to expand, this is for you.
  • Accessibility This backpack is very accessible. It has a sleek design which is perfect for those that are looking for effortless and easy use.

Nomatic Backpack Cons

  • It's very heavy The weight is 4 lbs, which is considerably heavier than some of the others on this list. That might be an issue if you're always travelling, or you need to carry many things in the bag.
  • The bag has a scratchable exterior Although the Nomatic brand designed the backpack to be water-resistant, they didn't make it scratchproof. That feels a bit of a disappointment when you consider that it's a bag designed for business and professional use. The fact that it is scratchable means you should probably avoid taking it on a hike.
  • It’s not easy to convert to a duffle bag Yes, it is possible to convert to a duffle bag. But it takes ages and a lot of messing around. The bag might have great storage options, but it lacks efficiency in some ways.

#3 - Boundary Supply Errant

Boundary Supply Errant Pack

If you like to go on long walks, hike along beautiful trails, or just go on crazy adventures, then we have found the perfect bag for you. The Boundary Supply Errant is the ideal backpack for active people who want to carry their stuff to remote places.

One of the best aspects of this backpack is the design, it looks like a great adventure backpack, and that’s because it is.

If you compare this backpack to the others on the list, it’s by far the standout backpack for anyone looking to go outdoors. And better still, the greatness of this backpack doesn’t just stop at the outdoorsy design.

It has many excellent features, such as an array of pockets all around the bag, which give it an air of comfort. And you can find this bag for just $170, which is the best value on this list.

– Size – 24 litres If you’re looking for a bag that has ample space, then 24 litres is ideal. Twenty-four litres is enough to carry all your daily essentials, laptop, and much more. And if you want to take this bag hiking and store your camera gear and some food for the day, this is enough space for you.

– Design The backpack has a straightforward yet effective design. And better still, it comes in blue and black. It even has a tan colour which looks fantastic. So, if you’re looking for a variety of designs, unlike the Nomatic backpack, this one gives you variety.

– Weight – 2.9 lbs At a weight of 2.9 lbs, this bag will never feel overly heavy. If you compare it to the Nomatic backpack, it has a much lighter weight and will feel more comfortable and easier to use.

Boundary Supply Errant Review

This bag is very comfortable, which has to be one of the main benefits of this pack. The designers used an array of excellent materials which include sleek tarpaulin on the outside. Furthermore, the interior has extensive quality.

They have used silky soft materials which feel incredibly comfortable. This is an excellent backpack for hiking, but we wouldn’t want to destroy the lavish interior.

Boundary Supply Errant Pros

  • Value for money We all love value, don't we? And this backpack offers fantastic value for money. For $200, this backpack is a steal. It has an array of comfort, pockets, and a sleek design that suggests it should be worth a lot more.
  • It has so many features This backpack has so many features. It includes everything from a laptop case, to magnetic pockets. It offers users so many features, and they will not be disappointed.
  • It’s a great design The backpacks come in many different colours, and each shade looks superb. Furthermore, the overall design of the bag is fantastic and is aesthetically pleasing.

Boundary Supply Errant Cons

  • Lacks user-friendliness We will start by saying that it's not a bad user experience, but it could be better. Some of the compartments can be a little tricky to open. One example is the main compartment with magnets that hold it together, and it can be tricky to navigate this.
  • Not very comfortable This con is likely to be a significant problem for many, but it lacks comfort. The shoulder straps are a little hard on the shoulders and could dig in if you have many things in your bag at once.
  • The top lid The bag is a top-loader, which is predictable for an adventure bag. However, the top lid is a bit small, and at times it can be tricky to fit things in.

#4 - P.D. Everyday Backpack

Peak Design Everyday Backpack

Are you a photographer or videographer? If so, I’m glad that we’ve caught your attention, because this backpack is a gem for you. Photographers know Peak Design for their photography friendly bags which are ideal for those who carry a lot of camera equipment.

It has space for lenses, bodies, and microphones, and is an all-round belter for camera fans. Furthermore, it has a unique design. The top-loader style makes it perfect for cameras, and the side pockets are great for storing your camera between shots.

We also have to comment on the incredible design, which is ideal for professional and business surroundings. And at a price of around $200, this is a great price for an everyday backpack.

– Sizes – 17-22 litres or 22-30 litres The size that you choose depends on how you’re going to use it. But the option of up to 30 litres makes it a fantastic choice for those that need space. Furthermore, if you need to store lots of camera equipment, you might benefit from the bigger size.

– Design The pack has a superb design that will catch many people’s eye, and it is perfect for all surroundings. The bag also comes in different colours such as grey, black, dark grey, and midnight blue. So, if you like to look stylish, then this is the bag for you.

– Weight – 3.6 lbs The bag is a little heavier than some of the others, but it’s still reasonably light. If you have camera gear, it might become a little heavier though.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack

The bag is generally comfortable and does use some fantastic materials. Users will enjoy the recycled nylon material on the exterior, which looks and feels great. Furthermore, users know Peak Design for their superb interiors. This bag has a refined interior with a whole host of pockets, compartments, and soft materials that make it very comfortable.

Unlike the other bags on this list, this bag comes with dividers which make the bag perfect for camera users. The ability to spread your equipment out is ideal for those looking to store lots of camera gear.

P.D. Everyday Backpack Pros

  • The design The bag comes in a variety of colours, but one thing they all have in common is a sleek aesthetic look. It is perfect for those who like a well-designed stylish bag that will stand out from the crowd.
  • The dividers A considerable benefit of this bag is the flex fold dividers. You can use these to separate all of your camera goods, including everything else you use daily.
  • The cool magnet latch The bag also comes with an excellent magnet latch. And not only does it look cool, but it also gives the bag a real high-quality feel.

P.D. Everyday Backpack Cons

  • Some of the compartments are tight. One of the most unfortunate cons about this bag is the tight compartments. And the laptop compartment is relatively small, and if you have many things in the bag, it could get rather tight.
  • The top isn't secure if you use the top mag latch. If you use the top compartment, then you might struggle to keep the mag latch secure. That is an issue because it can compromise security, and let's be honest, you do not want your photographer equipment to fall out.
  • The sternum strap is hard to adjust. The sternum strap is tough to adjust, which is a shame because the bag is very user-friendly in other ways.

#5 - Wandrd Duo Daypack

WANDRD Duo Daypack

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use backpack, then this one is ideal. The pack can do pretty much anything. If you want to use it for hiking, cycling, or even to the beach, then this bag is perfect.

Unlike many other backpacks, it isn’t explicitly designed for one user type because any user will reap this pack’s benefits.

The backpack has a 270-degree zipper, which is excellent for accessibility. Furthermore, this bag’s interior is ideal for photographers or people who like to carry many things. Oh, and we have to mention the backpack’s water resistance, which is a significant bonus of this pack.

At a price of around 220 USD, we would say that this is excellent value for money. You will get an all-round backpack for a great price.

– Size – 20 litres. The backpack only comes in one size, which is 20 litres. However, that should be ample room for many nomads. It will give you the space to store clothes, technology equipment and your camera gear if you need to.

– Design The matte black design of this backpack is one of the sleekest designs out of the five. It is a smart-casual design and is perfect for professional environments.

– Weight – 2.6lbs Weighing a total of 2.6lbs makes this bag one of the lightest on the list. And it will feel very lightweight and easy to use when you carry it.

5 BEST 20 LITRE BACKPACKS

This bag is one of the most comfortable backpacks on the market. The bag comes with an array of features, which include YKK zippers that are water-resistant. So, you don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain.

It also has fantastic modern tarpaulin which gives a comfortable feel and the gorgeous slick design that many users love.

Wandrd Duo Daypack Pros

  • Durability This bag is the most durable out of the list. You can take it into many different environments without any issues. It's durable and will stand the test of time in any weather conditions.
  • Materials The backpack has the best materials out of the five. And better still, the materials are of such high quality; it makes the pack more rigid and more robust. Inevitably, it will last longer in the future because of the high quality materials.
  • Multiple uses If you want a backpack to use for everything from hiking to professional meetings with clients, this backpack is versatile for every environment.

Wandrd Duo Daypack Cons

  • It isn't the most comfortable. If you are looking for a backpack that offers the best comfort, this isn't the one. However, it's comfortable enough for most nomads; it's just not as comfortable as some of the others on this list.
  • The bag gets very hot This backpack gets extremely hot if you're in the sun, and the inside can feel like a sauna. It's an issue if you have expensive electronics in the bag, such as laptops, tablets, and camera gear.
  • It has a cheap keyring Like many bags, it feels like the creators forgot to create a well-designed keyring in the bag. It feels like cheap material that could break at any time.

Best Folding Bike Bags: Top 5 Carry Bags for Foldable Bikes

Folding bikes are fantastic. They’re convenient, save on space and are brilliant if you commute to work and bicycle storage is an issue. A folding bike requires a bag to realise its full potential, though. Being able to carry your bike on busses, trains and even planes opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Here’s a rundown of the best folding bike bags on the market today.

Best Ways to Carry a Folding Bike

There are lots of different ways to carry a folding bike . Some people choose to attach their folded bike to a backpack, others opt for a hard shell case. Both of these have their drawbacks (the backpack option exposes bikes to the elements and cases are heavy) so a bike bag makes a great alternative.

Folding bikes are all about convenience without sacrificing performance . Your carrying solution shouldn’t compromise this.

Most bike bags are fully waterproof, lightweight and provide a comfortable way to carry your bike at the end of a journey. They’re useful for commutes and can be lifesavers if there isn’t much storage where you work. They’re even better for long-distance travellers and mean that you can take your bike literally anywhere in the world.

Best Folding Bike Bags [Top 5]

Given how useful they are, folding bike bags are in high demand. This, in turn, means that the market is crowded with a lot of choices!

Here’s a breakdown of our top five picks.

1. The Brompton Travel Bag

new folding travel bag backpack 20

Prices are approximate

Extra manoeuvrability

Multiple carry options

Reinforced sides

Given their specialisation with  folding bikes , it should come as no surprise that Brompton lead the way with their premium bag. It isn’t the cheapest on the list, but for the price you get quality materials, four wheels and some excellent features including a tilted base for enhanced manoeuvrability and multiple carrying options.

This is the bag to choose if you plan to take your bike on a long journey. Those four wheels make navigating a crowded airport or train station a breeze, and the specially engineered base ensures agile movement. The sides are reinforced with plastic panels (perfect for protecting your bike in a plane hold or a luggage rack) and tension straps secure the bike inside – it won’t move around.

Price is the biggest drawback here, but if you’re willing to pay a little extra for top of the range security and manoeuvrability you need look no further. With a weight of just 3.2kg, it’s surprisingly light and you can choose to carry it using a shoulder strap or one of several side handles. There’s even an extra pocket for storing smaller items. This is a bag that gives you freedom to roam, albeit with a (quite steep) price tag.

  • High quality, premium bag
  • Four wheels
  • Excellent for long distance travel
  • Pairs best with Brompton bikes
  • Only one colour

2. Halfords Folding Bike Bag

new folding travel bag backpack 20

Water, oil and weather poof

140 litre capacity

If you baulk at the  price of the Brompton  (or are just looking for a budget option to carry your bike around in the daytime) then you can’t go far wrong with the Halfords Folding Bike Bag. Halfords know their bikes and this no frills offering doesn’t disappoint.

It’s by no means bursting with features and innovation, but for the price you get an exceptionally sturdy bag that’s fully water and weather proof. Better still, it comes with padding around the shoulder and also the hip (an area that too many bags neglect). With a generous 140 litre capacity, it will store bikes up to 20 inches, so you won’t be stuck for space. If you own a smaller,  lightweight bike  and don’t want to add much bulk with a bag, this is a fantastic option.

This bag folds small and can easily be attached to a rear pannier rack. It’s oil resistant too, so you won’t have to worry about getting your clothes dirty as you carry your bike. That’s really where the features end, but this is a bag that puts economy and functionality at the forefront of its agenda. There aren’t any frills or designer tweaks, but if you just want a bag that works (and you don’t want to break the bank paying for it) this is the place to look.

  • Budget friendly
  • Will keep your bike protected
  • Big capacity
  • No additional pockets

3. Rockbros Bike Transport Bag

new folding travel bag backpack 20

Two bags in one

Shock proof

Anti-foul interior

Holding an impressive 4/5 star average in Amazon reviews (from 85 ratings) the Rockbros manages to strike a compromise between cost, functionality and features. It’s a mid range offering that doesn’t skimp on premium additions like the 3mm thickened sponge interlayer designed to protect against bumps, jolts and shocks.

Although it’s sold as a one piece, the Rockbros actually consists of two bags: the carry bag and a backpack. The former is heavily protected with a shockproof bottom and shock absorbing tape. If you’re looking for a heavy duty, high protection case, then this might be for you. Fortunately, all of that protection doesn’t make it cumbersome or uncomfortable. The carry case has thickened handles and an adjustable shoulder strap.

When not in use the case folds down small enough to be attached to handlebars or simply carried in the backpack. You won’t have to worry about cleaning either, since the interior is lined with anti-fouling fabric. This means that you can simply wipe it down with a damp cloth.

The bag is lockable, and although it doesn’t come with wheels we think all that protection makes it ideal for use in an airport or on the train. Its sturdy design will see you safely through any journey.

  • Offers superior protection
  • Easy to clean
  • Two bags for the price of one
  • Only holds bikes under 20 inches
  • Slightly heavy

4. Trancoss Bike Folding Travel Bag

new folding travel bag backpack 20

Biggest on the list

Padded carry straps

Internal pockets

If size is your motivating factor, look no further than the Trancoss. It will store bikes up to a massive 29 inches while leaving room for other gear and accessories. That makes it ideal for longer journeys, although a bag this big might be a little cumbersome for day to day travel. As you would expect from a quality product, the fabric is fully waterproof and highly durable.

The interior is padded (though not to the same extent as the Rockbros) and should keep your bike secure against all but the roughest treatment. There’s padding on the shoulder strap too, which is surprisingly comfortable given the size of the bag. Obviously, a bag this large will always be slightly unwieldy, but Trancoss has done a fantastic job at making those straps as comfortable as possible.

Best of all, this bag folds into an exceptionally compact package when empty. It’s light too, so you won’t have to worry about cycling with it attached to your bike. The Trancoss is surprisingly cheap. It falls in the mid-range price bracket without too many noticeable sacrifices. It doesn’t have the luxury feel of the Brompton or the extreme protection of the Rockbros, but for bigger bikes it’s a must.

  • Big and spacious
  • Comfortable carry straps
  • Room for accesories
  • Unwieldy to carry
  • Only light padding inside
  • Only one carry option (shoulder straps)

5. Selighting Folding Bike Bag

new folding travel bag backpack 20

High density webbing

Additional storage pouch

It’s certainly not the largest, but the Selighting bag might just be the most durable on the list. Owing to its special, high density webbing, this bag can carry even the heaviest of bikes and will hold its shape for years. As long term investments go it’s a trustworthy option – and it’s even at the lower end of the price range!

The bulk of the bag is made from 600D polyester, making it exceptionally lightweight. A storage pouch makes it easy to pack accessories and other gear. Clever design keeps that pouch accessible even when the bag is folded down, so you can attach it to your handlebars and still grab what you need.

Of course, the bag is also waterproof and it’s designed with public transport (trains, busses) and shorter journeys in mind. It might not have the additional protection required for a long haul bag, but it will certainly see you through shorter journeys without any problems.

Ultimately, this bag is all about that special webbing. If you’ve invested in a few foldable bike bags over the years only for them to wear out or lose shape, we recommend giving the Selighting a try. Over all, it’s a fantastic choice for  lighter, smaller bikes .

  • Will last for a long time
  • Lightweight
  • Storage pouch
  • The smallest on the list
  • Designed for shorter journeys
  • Only one shoulder strap

Folding Bicycle Bag FAQ

Can a folding bike fit in a backpack.

Not normally. Although there are some folding bikes small enough to fit inside a backpack (and backpacks big enough to house them) the usual way to pair the two is by strapping the bike to the outside of the pack.

Can You Put a Folding Bike in a Suitcase?

Although possible (with a big case!) putting a folding biking into a suitcase isn’t recommended. The bike will move around, exposing it to damage, and the combined weight of the two will be extremely heavy.
