Safaricom Announces Kes 17.5 Million Safari Rally Sponsorship

Part of the sponsorship includes KES 15 million for the FIA Rally Star Programme

Safaricom has today announced a KES 17.5 million sponsorship for the Safari Rally as the event makes its return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar for the first time in close to two decades.

The sponsorship included KES 15 million which will go towards supporting three young Kenyan drivers selected as part of the FIA Rally Star programme. This is a global initiative aimed at identifying, training and developing talented young drivers between 17-26 years.

“We have always believed in supporting the youth by giving them a platform to showcase their talent and to excel, whether this is through sports, music or the arts. The FIA programme allows us to support the WRC Safari Rally while also pursuing our passion point of empowering youth. The 3 young Kenyan drivers we’ll be supporting have the potential to become the next big stars and with the Safari Rally now back on the WRC calendar, they get to showcase their talents on an international stage”, said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom

The three Kenyan drivers who have been selected for the FIA Rally star programme include Jeremy Wahome and Hamza Anwar who are both aged 22 as well as 26-year old McRae Mutwiri Kimathi.

“The ultimate objective of FIA Rally Star programme is to develop drivers who have the potential to become future stars of the World Rally Championship by encouraging the emergence of a new generation of drivers and to identify those with the greatest potential to target a professional career”, Said Phineas Kimathi, President of the Kenya Motorsport Federation and CEO WRC Safari Rally.

58 rally drivers including 34 Kenyan racers are set to participate in this year’s Safari Rally which will take place from 24 th to 27 th June.

Mcrae to start knrc rally3 campaign in machakos.

  The 2023 Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) series revs-off this weekend with RSC Machakos Rally on Sunday.

One of the drivers to watch will be the globetrotting McRae Kimathi who will be out to contest the newly introduced KNRC Rally3 category by the Kenya Motor Sports Federation.

Kimathi enters the contest with a wealth of experience gained last season from the Junior WRC and the FIA African Rally Championships (ARC).

The young speedster will be guided by his regular navigator Mwangi Kioni in his bid for the local glory.

“I will do the full KNRC championship this year. I am gunning for victory in my class (KNRC Rally3) and at the same time, I will be out to challenge the status quo of some of the top drivers in the series,” Kimathi declared.

The 2021 Africa Junior Champion took part in all the five rounds of the Junior WRC in 2022 and finished sixth overall.

Elated Kioni says he is excited to be back on the bucket seat of the Fiesta after a very busy season last year.

“We will be driving the Fiesta Rally 3 car which we first steered on WRC Safari 2022 and the three rounds of the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC) last season in Tanzania, Rwanda and Zambia,” says Kioni.

Car in pristine conditions 

“The car is still in its pristine condition having been driven in only four rallies,” he added.

The Rallye Sports Club (RSC) round will be flagged off at the Machakos People’s Park on Sunday February 5 from 8:00am onwards.

Machakos People’s Park will also host the 6km Spectator Stage (SS!) which will be run once. Thereafter, cars proceed to Lisa Farm to tackle three repeated stages (Phill-30.58km, Mickey 28.75km, Phinny-15.08) totaling a competitive mileage 154.82km.

The event’s Power Stage will be the repeat run of the 15.08km Phinny stage from 13:15hours onwards where the top three fastest drivers will earn additional championship points.

Among the drivers enlisted for the event include defending KNRC Champion Karan Patel, last year’s runners up Jasmeet Chana, 2021 motor sport personality of the year Aakif Virani (Skoda R2), Sam Karangatha, Edward Maina aka Emka (Subaru), Jeremy Wahome (Ford Fiesta R3), Eric Bengi and Evans Kavisi (EVOX) among others.

Meanwhile, additional new classes will feature in the 2023 KNRC including the new Rally2, Rally 3 and KNRC Junior Championship.

Rules loosened to expand groups

KMSF General Manager Mwaura Njuguna also revealed that Rules of Non-Homologated Cars have now been loosened by expanding the scope of Group S cars and introducing the all-new Group S Plus Class + B13

“Several homologation waivers on seats, seatbelts, fuel tanks will come into force beginning with Machakos Rally,” he said.

Machakos governor unveils circuit motorsport

Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua in partnership with the National Safari Rally Fan Club and motoring fraternity, has unveiled a new motorsport venture, as part of recreational activities to the public.

Speaking at the Machakos Convention and Conference Centre during the launch of the Machakos Formula 1 track and RX motor rallying, Governor Mutua said that the 4.5km circuit will be used for all types of motorsports, including motorcycle racing.

“I would like to reveal that the circuit will be open to all motorsports, including motorcycle racing, in order to give room for every individual who would wish to participate and enjoy the moment,” said Mutua.

Mutua pointed out that the 4.5km circuit will culminate in an Extravaganza of RX motorsport on the weekend of July 9th to 10 th , this year. He said that the motorsports will operate both on tarmac and rough roads as the 4.5km circuit covers both ways.

The Governor added that they will provide a social media platform which will enable the fans to closely follow their teams during the great event.

“Our goal is to create a media platform that enables fans to follow their teams closely, through social media and live-streaming and interact through our own specific app just like many of the international organizations who keep their fans informed,” Mutua noted.

Carl Tundo, who is a five times winner of the Safari Rally and also the first and only Kenyan winner of an Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) round, said that, all the cars participating will be identical in power and weight.

“ To begin with, all the cars will be identical in power and weight, our first choice is to use Subaru N10S, which are considered to be popular with fans since they are fast and exciting at the same time,” Tundo said.

Tundo pointed out that, later they will introduce and increase the vehicle categories, focusing on locally assembled vehicles.

“The plan is to also introduce and increase the vehicle categories, focusing on locally assembled vehicles such as the Toyota Vitz and the VW Polo. There will be a pure drivers’ competition based on the driving skill,” Tundo said.

Tundo noted that their aim is to create great racing for the drivers and a great show for the spectators at the track and at home.

“There will be an entertainment village where fans and families can be entertained throughout the weekend by having; live bands, food and drink festival and VIP/ corporate lounge set-ups,” said Tundo.
