Finding your ideal flight, whether your focus is on price, a relaxed itinerary or flexibility

There are many considerations beyond the “base price” of an airline ticket that constitute the total cost of a journey. More importantly, there are many steps along the way where travelers simply throw up their hands and say, “That’s not worth it!”

Scanning fares and availability, I often come up with a great deal on round-trip airfare, only to discover an onerous layover, ridiculous routing or an inhuman departure time. Sometimes the outbound flight is fantastic, but the return trip is a deal-breaker.

In fact, I wonder if airlines proffer certain “deals” just to see what level of misery travelers will endure to save a few bucks.

The cost difference between a great itinerary and a ridiculous one can be extraordinary. And these disparities exist whether you’re spending cash or cashing in frequent flyer miles.

One particular fare that I’ve been watching for a couple of months is Anchorage-Guatemala for $385 round-trip. That’s a fabulous fare to get to the capital of a Latin American country.

The cheapest rate is a basic economy fare on United. The flights I checked departed on April 18 at 11:45 p.m. The first flight is on United’s Denver nonstop. Then there’s a 8:24 layover, before continuing to Houston, where there’s a more reasonable connection time of 1:11.

The return trip on April 25 is brutal. First, the United flight leaves Guatemala City at 1:30 a.m. On arrival in Houston, there’s a 7:30 layover. After the hop to Denver, there’s an additional layover of 4:36.

To add to the indignity, United will not allow you to take a standard rolling carry-on suitcase. Nope. There’s an extra $90 fee (round-trip) for the upgrade to “regular” economy. At that rate, you also get to pre-select your seat. Any checked baggage is another add-on.

A good itinerary on those dates costs almost twice as much on Alaska Airlines: $705 round-trip. The layovers on the outbound flight are less than two hours in Seattle and Los Angeles. On the return flight, there’s just one stop in LAX at 3:49, which is enough time to clear customs, take the bus to the domestic terminal, and clear TSA one more time.

[ What to know as Alaska Airlines unveils new initiatives and changes to rewards programs ]

Another nice fare that popped up is between Anchorage and Quito, Ecuador. Ecuador’s been near the top of my list for a while. I’m anxious to explore the country and meet the people — but Quito also is the jumping-off point to the Galapagos Islands.

United again came up with a decent fare: $524 round-trip. But it’s only available on one day, May 18, for a seven-day itinerary. The outbound flight has a tight connection in Denver (41 minutes) and a long one in Houston (seven hours). The return flight, in addition to a red-eye departure at 12:40 a.m., has a seven-hour layover in Houston and a four-hour layover in San Francisco.

Delta has a much better itinerary from Anchorage to Quito for the same dates: less than 18 hours in each direction. The cost? $3,000 per person.

You don’t have to look far and wide for these crazy pricing spreads.

Are you flying to Seattle from Anchorage? If you’re traveling on Friday, April 12, there are several flights (out of 14 nonstops) on Alaska Airlines available starting at $198 one-way. Those flights depart at 1:25 a.m., 1:55 a.m., 2:30 a.m. and 5 a.m.

If you’re interested in a daylight flight between 8 a.m. and 4:15 p.m., the one-way rates range from $337-$437 one-way.

If you’re a frequent flyer and would like to cash in some miles, the rates also are all over the map. Departing between 1:55 a.m. and 5 a.m., plan on cashing in 15,000 miles one-way. Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., the rate doubles: 30,000-40,000 miles one-way.

Flexibility is important when you’re burning miles. If you can wait an extra week, the rate is just 10,000 miles each way for the red-eye Anchorage-Seattle flights on April 19. Coming back on a Sunday evening, travelers can choose a 10:15 p.m. flight, getting in at 12:48 a.m. The cost: 10,000 miles. But between 4:40 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., it’s much more: 20,000-30,000 miles one-way.

With 14 nonstop flights, Alaska Airlines can adjust each flight to appeal to either budget-conscious travelers or expense-account flyers. Some are fixated on the price, while business travelers are more concerned with the schedule and upgrades.

Delta, with four nonstops in April, offers about the same price on all the flights: $337-$367 round-trip.

Once you add a connecting flight, the routings and the fares start to get really crazy. It’s just one reason why frequent travelers prefer nonstop flights.

Between Anchorage and Atlanta, United has the cheapest fare, at $466 one-way (April 20-28). The outbound flight includes a 4:30 layover in Chicago. On the return flight, there’s a 12:38 layover at O’Hare. That’s ridiculous.

In fact, United offers a much better return flight, with just a 1:13 layover in Chicago. It’s $105 more.

Do you want to fly on the nonstop? Me, too. Delta resumes its nonstop Anchorage-Atlanta 757 service on May 23. Fly between May 26 and June 3 for the princely sum of $938 round-trip. That’s in coach. Fly in the front of the bus for $3,199 round-trip.

This spring, nonstops are priced a little higher than connecting flights. Between Anchorage and Phoenix, Delta and United offer a $154 one-way fare. Alaska Air is priced higher for a nonstop: $202 one-way.

From Anchorage to Los Angeles on April 19, Delta and United have $163 one-way tickets. Alaska Air’s cheapest flight to Los Angeles includes a 6:16 layover in Seattle, for $178 one-way. The nonstop? Alaska Air offers tickets for $288 one-way.

There are some exceptions, of course. Alaska Air’s new weekly nonstop from Anchorage to San Diego is priced lower ($217 one-way) than other airlines’ connecting service ($227 one-way).

Alaska Air’s nonstop from Anchorage to Portland also is priced at $198 one-way, while Delta’s connecting service sells for $207 one-way.

Be careful, though. A cheap southbound ticket may lure you into the sales funnel, only to be jolted back to reality for your ticket back home to Alaska.

For example, Alaska Air’s new nonstop from Anchorage to New York’s JFK airport is priced nicely for the first week: $275 one-way, starting June 13. But a northbound trip from JFK to Anchorage costs more: $549-$674 one-way.

The cheapest one-way ticket from Anchorage to the Lower 48 is offered by Sun Country Airlines on the carrier’s Anchorage-Minneapolis nonstop: just $117. It’s available on May 18, 27, 30 and 31. The northbound tickets are a little more, though: $185-$201, May 31-June 10.

The flight times and layovers are just two components of the total cost of your ticket. After selecting the right flight, then the next chapter starts: all the add-on fees for baggage, meals, Wi-Fi and extra legroom. But that’s another story.

[ With all the recent headlines about panels and tires falling off planes, is flying safe? ]

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

The Moscow Kremlin, symbol of Russi! It’s the Kremlin’s wall that you can see on Red Square. The Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin are both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . We visited the Moscow Kremlin several times, with skip-the-line tickets and without, with my family, but also with my colleagues when I was living in Moscow.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin: tips and practical information

I will give here the key info to save time (and money) before the visit and once there:

  • Map, how to get there, opening hours
  • Entry tickets to the Kremlin and the Armoury Chamber, including skip-the-line entry tickets
  • Guided tours

Map of the Moscow Kremlin, how to get there and opening hours

The Kremlin is large, so I have created a map to help you find your bearings which you will find below. If you are interested in other Moscow maps, find them in Free Moscow Maps.

How to get there? Where is the entrance to the Moscow Kremlin?

  • The nearest metro station is Biblioteka Imeni Lenina (point 1 on the map) on the red line. On the other hand, even if we all have in mind, the image of the Kremlin on Red Square, the entrance is NOT located directly on the square. There is an entrance on the Red Square, but it is for stuff only.
  • The entrance to the Kremlin is on another side of the Kremlin (point 3 on the map).
  • Check also our blog post about Where to stay in Moscow? to be sure to stay in the most interesting districts of Moscow.

Opening hours

The Kremlin is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, except Thursday.

Good to know! It is not possible to enter the Kremlin territory with suitcases, bulky bags or animals. If you come with a suitcase anyway, there is a free concierge not far from the cash desks. The total dimensions must not exceed 150 cm (total, that is to say if we add the height, width and thickness). See the rules on the Kremlin website .

How to buy the entry tickets to visit Moscow Kremlin?

Several tickets. Later in the article I will describe in more detail what is behind the walls of the Moscow Kremlin, but we can already divide the Kremlin into several parts: the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square, the Armoury Chamber, the Diamond Fund and the Ivan-The-Great Bell Tower. There are entry tickets for each of these parts. So you have a choice. What is most visited is the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square.

Armoury Chamber. The number of entry tickets to the Armoury Chamber is limited, to make the visit more pleasant for visitors. As with the Cathedral Square, the entry tickets can be purchased online (see below). And I would recommend to buy tickets to the Armoury Chamber in advance.

There are two options for visiting the Kremlin without a guide : buy tickets in ticket offices once there OR then buy them on the Internet, then take them at the ticket offices on site with less queuing. On the other hand, if you want to have more information about the Kremlin, a guided tour can be interesting: skip-the-line, accompaniment and not necessarily expensive for many.

Buy tickets for the Kremlin on site

The ticket offices are open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day, except Thursday . They are located in the Alexandrovsky Garden which runs along the walls of the Moscow Kremlin ( point 2 on the map above). It is possible to pay by bank card or in cash (rubles). See the post How to pay in Russia ?, if you need more info.

Good to know! Saturday is a day to avoid because there are many more people than the other days, especially in the morning. In general, the crowds are higher in the morning.

Moscow Kremlin guided tours

As tickets for the Armoury Chamber are limited, to go anyway you can go through guided tours, in groups or with a private guide. Certified guides have fast-track tickets and may still have seats. In addition, a guided tour in the Kremlin is worth it: you learn a lot and with many it is not so expensive, especially now with a fairly weak ruble.

With a private English-speaking guide

Only a certified guide is allowed to show you the Moscow Kremlin.

From June to September, the Kremlin is very visited and even official guides cannot have tickets. During this period, one of the solutions for a guided tour is a group visit.

Moscow Kremlin group tour in English

The second solution is to visit the Kremlin and the Armoury Chamber in a group. This is surprising, but it is not necessarily more economical than with a private guide. However, if there are no more entry tickets, this is a good solution.

Can we take pictures inside the Moscow Kremlin?

According to the Moscow Kremlin website , “it is forbidden to take photos and videos” inside the Armoury Chamber and the cathedrals”. There is no restriction for the exterior. You can still try to take photos inside the buildings, but the guards, often guards, will quickly point you out to stop.

Estimated visit time

A visit to the Kremlin and the Palace of Armor takes around 4 hours with a guided tour. If you go alone (without guide), it’s more or less equivalent. If you have fast-track tickets or you visit the Kremlin and the Palace of Armor with a certified guide, you also save a little time.

Good to know. There is nothing to eat inside the Kremlin, except maybe small snacks or ice cream. On the other hand, there are a few fast food restaurants near Okhotny Ryad station, but above all a lot of addresses on Nikolskaya Street , near Red Square and the Bolshoi Theater.

The Moscow Kremlin: what to see?

Kremlin means fortress in Slavic. The Moscow Kremlin is therefore not the only Kremlin in Russia. Nevertheless, it is the best known kremlin. It housed first the residence of the tsars, then the seat of the Soviet government, and today the Russian government. Finally, what is behind its walls?

  • Cathedrals and churches;
  • Exhibitions and museums;
  • Palace of the Patriarch;
  • State buildings which are not to be visited.

Most of the Kremlin to see is located on the Cathedral Square .

Cathedrals and churches of the Moscow Kremlin

Dormition cathedral.

(point 4 on the map, often called the Cathedral of the Assumption)

Built in 1475 and 1479 under the direction of an Italian architect, it was built in place of a small church erected by Ivan I to mark the accession of Moscow to the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first stone church in Moscow, it was used for the coronation and marriage ceremonies of the Czars, as well as for important events of the heads of the Church.

assumption-cathedral

Annunciation Cathedral

(point 5 on the map)

Built in 1489, this cathedral has also preserved magnificent fragments of paintings from its time. The floor is in jasper. The cathedral was a private place for the Czars to gather and confess. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the chaplain was the personal confessor of members of the Tsar’s family .

Visit Kremlin

Archangel Saint Michael’s Cathedral

(point 6 on the map)

Built in 1508 by an Italian architect (again!), One finds outside and inside the cathedral of Venetian Renaissance features. 46 tombs continue the necropolis of the cathedral. It is the necropolis of the princes of Moscow (independent principality of Moscow), and the first tsars of Russia. Here are the photos (author: poznamka).

Church of the Deposition-of-the-Robe

(point 7 on the map)

Built from 1484 to 1485, the church was built in honor of the relics of the Virgin brought from Palestine to Constantinople in 452.

Ivan The Great Bell Tower

(point 8 on the map)

The bell tower is 81 meters high. Built in 1508 and blown up by Napoleon’s army in 1812, the tower and the bell tower were rebuilt soon after. Also note that a beautiful panoramic view opens from the bell tower over the city.

Museums of the Moscow Kremlin

Armoury chamber.

(point 9 on the map)

This museum of applied arts brings together an exceptional collection of the treasures of the tsars. There we find jewelry, crowns, costumes, diamonds, thrones, weapons and armor, all the riches of Russian princes and tsars accumulated during their centuries of reign.

Kremlin Museum of Treasures and Antiquities

(point 10 on the map)

This museum is located in the basement of the Annunciation Cathedral. It contains objects found during archaeological excavations on the territory of the Kremlin. They are mainly objects from medieval Russia.

Patriarch’s Palace

(point 11 on the map)

Built on the orders of Patriarch Nikon in 1655, this palace includes several rooms and a church, the Church of the Twelve Apostles. The particularity of this place is the cruciform room of 300m² which has no pillars. There are also objects that occupied the rooms: furniture, the gospels, icons.

Other Kremlin attractions

There are other interesting attractions you can see during your visit to the Moscow Kremlin. For example, you can take a refreshing break in the Taïniski garden. In addition, in a small corner of the garden is a platform for helicopters, it can be used by the Russian President in an emergency!

Tsar Pouchka (point 12) is also an attraction (especially well known to Russians). It’s a gigantic cannon that weighs almost 40 tonnes! The Guinness Book of Records considers it the largest howitzer ever built.

In the same spirit, you can also see Tsar Kolokol (point 13) , a gigantic bell tower which is located very close to the bell tower of Ivan the Great.

I have summarized everything around the Kremlin and Red Square in this blog post:

How to get India vs. Pakistan tickets: Prices for the ICC T20 World Cup in New York

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup comes to the United States for the first time this June as part of a co-hosting effort with the West Indies. Among the International Cricket Council games is the highly-anticipated India vs. Pakistan match-up. If you're looking to find tickets, then you're in luck, because we've rounded up everything you need to know about how to get India vs. Pakistan tickets for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Last year, India narrowly lost the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup to Australia despite a home-field advantage. India has won the World Cup twice, and Pakistan, their longtime rivals, has won the revered competition once. The last time India and Pakistan played each other was at the Cricket World Cup in October 2023, where India beat Pakistan by seven wickets.

When it comes to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which is a more recently-created competition, both India and Pakistan have each won once. Pakistan played in the finals at the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, but they ultimately lost to England. India also lost to England at the 2022 competition, in the semi-finals. The match on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is shaping up to be the main draw of the US portion of the competition this year.

Original standard tickets are a hot commodity and hard to come by, but you can browse resale ticket availability on websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

ICC ran a ballot for original standard tickets in February, which received a massive response of more than three million applications, according to the ICC. While some tickets are still available on the official T20 website and more are occasionally released, original India vs. Pakistan tickets have sold out and are no longer available. A new wave of public tickets were made available earlier this month, but this didn't include more tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game.

Tickets for the India vs. Pakistan game are available on resale vendor websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . Due to the substantial demand, these are higher-priced than the original standard ticket prices.

How much are India vs. Pakistan tickets?

While it's unclear exactly how much the original standard India vs. Pakistan tickets went for in the ballot, the cheapest tickets for other matches at USA venues start at $35 (although India vs. Pakistan was most likely more). The only currently available India vs. Pakistan resale tickets on StubHub start at $1,303 each. Vivid Seats listings are similarly priced, starting at $1,633. Over the past week, StubHub prices have slightly increased and Vivid Seats prices have slightly decreased.

What about other Men's T20 World Cup matches?

While India vs. Pakistan might be the most anticipated event of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, there are plenty of other exciting matches throughout June, culminating in the finals on June 29 in Barbados. If the event you're interested in has sold out, you can always check out the official T20 website  or browse resale websites like StubHub .

Note: Certain services and regions prohibit the resale of tickets. Business Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal reselling of tickets, and entry into an event is at the venue's discretion.
