Desert Hot Springs is one of few places in the world that has a dual aquifer, meaning both hot and cold sparkling water emerge from the earth containing healing minerals for drinking and immersion. First discovered by pioneer settler Cabot Yerxa, the waters have been long thought to alleviate many ailments including arthritis, dry skin, sunburn, and to support improved cardiovascular function.

4 Best Ways to Experience the Mineral Waters in Saratoga Springs

Michele · October 16, 2021 ·

A hand holding a plastic water cup under a natural water fountain in the park.

Do you believe in the restorative power of Saratoga mineral springs ?

After my last trip to Saratoga Springs, NY, I just might.

I took my first sip of mineral water from a fountain in downtown Congress Park. The water had a hint of metallic flavor and left behind a salty film on my lips. There was also a fizziness to it that took me completely by surprise.

I’m fortunate to be in good health so I didn’t set out on a healing mission. I just wanted to taste the water that flows so curiously from the  Saratoga Springs water fountains and springs that are scattered around the city.

To my surprise though, I experienced a burst of invigoration after sipping some of the waters. Then later in the week, I slipped into a warm mineral bath at Roosevelt Baths & Spa and felt any stress and fatigue I had built up escape my body and dissolve into thin air.

Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?

Honestly if I lived in Saratoga Springs, the Roosevelt Baths would be on my weekly rotation of things to do. For now, though, I’ll have to savor the soothing memory.

If you’re thinking of a weekend spa getaway, Saratoga Springs, located in the Capital Region of New York State , should be at the top of your list.

Read on to learn about the history of the  Saratoga Springs mineral springs  as well as the best places to enjoy them.

And check out my video of my mineral water tasting tour!

History of Saratoga Mineral Springs and Water Fountains

Picture this geological journey.

A reservoir of water lies deep in the shale layers of earth until, powered by natural carbon dioxide gas, streams of water snake through connected underground channels. The water reaches the earth’s surface and then, thanks to a fault line, finds a crack in the earth through which it can escape.

It continues to gurgle at the surface or just below, creating a nutrient-rich continuous source of water.

Admittedly this is a super simple explanation of a complex (and kind of miraculous if you ask me) geological phenomenon.

Nevertheless, the underlying facts remain true:

  • Saratoga Springs sits on a geological fault line.
  • Underground streams of water mix it up with minerals and gases.
  • The nutrient-dense water bubbles up to the surface.

A hand holding a cup under the flow of an outdoor water mineral water fountain.

The following history is also true.

The Indigenous tribe called the Mohawks inhabited this region circa 14th century. Because the salty  mineral waters lured animals, the Mohawks found Saratoga Springs to be a rich hunting ground.

They also understood that the water had curative properties. They treated it as sacred, calling it “Medicine Spring of the Great Spirit.”

And so it went for thousands of years until (shocking!) the arrival of the white settlers, namely Sir William Johnson .

Johnson immigrated to the region from Ireland in the 1740s with the purpose of overseeing an estate his uncle owned. He accomplished this task, it is believed, through the labor of enslaved individuals he bought when he arrived in the New World.

Johnson also developed a good relationship with the local Mohawk tribe. He learned their language and in 1755 was appointed by the British government as the Superintendent of Indian Affairs.

In 1771, Johnson was suffering from a bout of ill health made worse by an old war wound. His friends from the Mohawk Nation brought him to their sacred healing waters, which had a positive effect on his ailing health.

Did Johnson respect the local Indigenous community by keeping their centuries-old secret of the healing waters safe?

Nope…No, he did not.

But I’m sure you guessed that.

Word of their healing properties spread far and wide and by the 19th century, wealthy health-seeking tourists traveled in droves to the  Saratoga mineral baths.

The city soon became known as “the Queen of Spas.”

The promise of the curative waters even lured the Gilded Age’s wealthiest members with the Vanderbilts, the Whitneys, and JP Morgan arriving to soak in the city’s bath houses and sip the mineral-rich waters that flowed from the drink halls.

Health Benefits of Saratoga Springs Mineral Water

“The springs of Saratoga were the liquid vitamin pill of the Victorian era.”

That’s according to our guide during a tour of Congress Park, and I think that’s the most concise way I’ve heard it phrased.

Throughout the 19th century, ailing patients were told by their doctors to “take the waters” of Saratoga Springs. Patients flocked here to treat illness as varied as rheumatism, skin disease, gout, and cancer.

Stream of water shooting up from a Saratoga mineral spring in the park.

But just as different vitamins contain different nutrients, the  Saratoga mineral springs  varied in their advantages.

Remember, before streaming upwards to reach a crack in the earth’s surface, the water was trapped deep in the earth’s layers. The deeper its origin, the higher the concentration of minerals it contains.

The  mineral water health benefits  depend on the level of minerals present.

So what are these minerals? What exactly are their curative powers?

In Saratoga Springs, some mineral waters are higher in iron. That may have been a 19th century prescription to treat skin problems or shortness of breath.

Doctors may have ordered water with higher alkaline levels to treat heartburn and hangovers, while  drinking mineral water  high in magnesium and potassium may have been ordered to treat high blood pressure.

Author Grace Maguire Swanner, M.D. ( Saratoga Queen of the Spas , 1988 ) broke down the springs into three curative categories:

  • cathartic (laxative)
  • alkaline (antacid)
  • chalybeate (high in iron)

The mineral properties are really no mystery once you see or taste them. Some—like Congress Spring—flow from a fountain with built-up layers of rust; others leave a salty taste behind on the lips.

Soaking one’s body in the waters was prescribed for a multitude of problems, from arthritis to rashes to nervousness of temperament.

Personally, I booked a 40-minute soaking session and after only a minute or two in the bath, I felt a complete sense of calm, which remained for the entire duration of the bath and stayed with me for the rest of the day (more on that experience below).

One 1888 publication described “taking the cure” in this way:

The…treatment consists of mineral water, mineral baths, mastication, cheerfulness, abstemiousness, wholesome food, exercise, sleep, self-restraint, and general reasonableness of life.  From: Saratoga Chips and Carlsbad Wafers by Nathan Sheppard

Sounds like rich people just living their best life to me…

How to Find the Mineral Springs in Saratoga Springs

First, it’s important to know what you’re looking for.

Don’t be misled by the word “springs” which to me, evokes the image of a clearing in the woods with a pool of naturally steaming water to sink your aching bones into. That’s not what you’ll find here.

You CAN soak in a mineral bath at Roosevelt Baths & Spa (more on that below) but other than that, you’re looking for naturally flowing fountains in various parts of the city . In Congress Park , they resemble what public water fountains might have looked like in the Victorian Age.

In Saratoga Spa State Park , they’re spread out along a couple of different hiking trails, some shooting continual streams of water from the ground up, others sputtering out of faucets like a fussy showerhead, the ground beneath it layered with an earthy mineral build-up.

Once you know what you’re looking for, the springs are not hard to find and you may even bump into one without looking while out for a stroll, like in Congress Park.

I recommend stopping at the  Saratoga Springs Visitor Center  to begin your planning.

Don’t forget to take a cup or water bottle so you can sample the healing waters yourself!

How Many Natural Springs Does Saratoga Have?

There were originally 200 mineral springs. Today there only about 21 active springs remaining.

What happened to them was–in a word–industry.

It wasn’t only tourists seeking the effervescent healing waters of Saratoga Springs.

Entrepreneurs were also drawn here and by around 1880, they had figured out that one way to monetize the wells was to tap them for carbonic acid gas and use the carbonation for soda fountains.

This went on for nearly three decades until 1908 when, in an effort to protect and preserve the waters, an anti-pumping law was passed. By then it was too late for many of the springs, which had been pumped dry.

Read on to find out the 4 best ways to enjoy the Saratoga Springs Mineral Springs.

1. Take a Guided Tour of Congress Park

Saratoga Springs water fountain called Deer Park Spring in Congress Park.

If you have the time, I highly recommend booking  a tour of Congress Park . The tour isn’t solely about the mineral waters but their development as a tourist attraction are all part of the city’s history as a playground for the rich and famous.

My favorite part of the tour was stopping at each of the four mineral water fountains to sample the goods. The first sip at each fountain was especially fun because I and others on the tour had no idea how each one would taste.

Saratoga Springs water fountain called Hathorn Spring in Congress Park.

Our tour guide Marcia provided us with cups and as we tasted, she gave us the run-down on the history of the mineral waters and their purported healing properties. She talked a lot about Sir William Johnson and the role he played in making Saratoga a health-tourism destination.

Marcia is a long-time resident of Saratoga Springs and this is always one of the best parts of a tour—having access to a local to bombard with questions!

Not to worry if you don’t have time for a guided tour. Stop by the Visitor Center and pick up a brochure or download a self-guided walking tour of Congress Park map .

You can read more here about my guided tour of Congress Park.

Mineral Water Fountains to Visit in Congress Park

Saratoga Springs water fountain called Columbian Fountain in Congress Park.

There are four mineral drinking fountains in Congress Park:

  • Columbian Spring
  • Congress Spring
  • Deer Park Spring
  • Hathorn #1 (across the street from the carousel in the park, at the corner of Putnam and Spring Streets)

They are out in plain sight and not hard to find but do get a map to make finding these Saratoga Springs water fountains easier.

If you’re heading out without a tour guide, don’t forget to bring a cup or water bottle for tasting!

2. Soak in the Roosevelt Baths

I checked in at the reception area at Roosevelt Baths & Spa 30 minutes early, as recommended when I made my online appointment. An attendant showed me to the women’s changing room, where I changed into a robe and slippers, locked up my belongings, and went to the relaxation room until I was called for my appointment.

Tea, water, and fruit were available while I waited. A spa therapist called my name right on time and took me and a few other patrons down a long hallway lined with private therapy rooms.

Porcelain bathtub filled with rust-colored water at a spa.

Inside my room, a mineral bath awaited. The water that fills up the deep porcelain bathtub is sourced from underground springs and because the springs in Saratoga are naturally cold, warm fresh water is added until the bath reaches body temperature.

This was an absolutely delicious and luxurious experience.

If you are in any way a spa-lover, I highly recommend this calming, stress-relieving treatment. The minerals make the water slightly buoyant while the carbonation acts like a natural bath bomb subtly tingling the skin.

The water is also a little discolored and has a slight metallic smell, but I didn’t find either of those off-putting.

Hallway inside Saratoga Springs Roosevelt Baths & Spa.

I had booked a 40-minute bath and when it was done, the spa attendant opened the door a crack and hung up a heated towel for me to dry off with. I was then free to head back to the relaxation room for as long as I wanted.

The spa attendant had explained all the steps so I was totally clear on the procedure. She also told me the baths were good treatments for skin conditions, arthritis, and anxiety.

As I mentioned previously, my experience during the bath was feeling like stress had physically left my body, kind of like it does during a good yoga class or on the first day of a weeklong beach vacation!

Roosevelt Baths & Spa Prices

I booked only a mineral bath but the spa offers a whole range of treatments. Some treatments include:

  • 40-minute mineral bath : $50 ($40 Monday – Thursday)
  • 40-minute Aromatherapy mineral bath : $55 ($45 Monday – Thursday)
  • 20-minute mineral bath prior to a treatment : $35 ($30 Monday – Thursday)
  • Massages : prices range from $130 – $155 ($100 – $125 Monday – Thursday)

See here for a complete list of  Roosevelt Baths & Spa Services Menu .

NOTE ON TIPPING: There was a tip envelope with my spa attendant’s name on it in my private soaking room. It would have been super easy to slip a cash tip in there after my bath but I didn’t know it was going to work like that and my wallet was back in the locker room with the rest of my belongings.

Had I known, I would have had some cash ready in my bathrobe pocket to leave for her. Instead, I left the tip afterwards with reception, which was also fine but leaving the tip in the therapy room would have most convenient.

Roosevelt Baths History

After many of the mineral spring wells were tapped out for the carbonic acid gas, then-New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt pushed to preserve any remaining springs.

Close-up shot of brick and marble classical style building.

By 1935, FDR was the United States president and under his New Deal, he commissioned the building of a complex of spas,  located in what is now Saratoga Spa State Park.

The buildings still exist and the grounds are a gorgeous collection of classical buildings and arcade walkways with gabled arches that were modeled after the great spas of Europe. But of the four bath houses, only Roosevelt Baths & Spa is still in operation.

Lincoln Bath closed in 2004. Washington Bath is now the National Museum of Dance. The former Bottling Plant, which bottled mineral waters and called them State Seal, is now the Saratoga Automobile Museum.

If you’d like more information on the National Museum of Dance and the arts scene, please read my post on the arts in Saratoga Springs.

Brick and marble classical style building.

The glory days of the New Spa—as it was called then—were between the years of 1936 and 1950 with  one source saying the four bath houses gave 200,000 baths in 1946, its busiest year.

While walking around the grounds of the complex after my own mineral bath, it was easy to picture patrons sitting on the terraces outside the bath houses or strolling under the arcade walkways, taking preventative cures or simply basking in the healthy environment, an oasis set apart from the stresses of everyday life.

3. Hike Saratoga Spa State Park

Love hiking? Saratoga Sprin gs  offers pleasant trails that have the added bonus of leading to natural mineral springs.

A mineral spring spouting a stream of water from an island made of hardened-minerals.

The trails at Saratoga Spa State Park are relatively short and easy. At 2.9 miles, Geyser Trail is the longest and leads hikers to the main attraction: the Geyser Island Spouter, which (though it’s no Old Faithful), is the most impressive mineral spring in town.

Water from The Geyser, as it’s known locally, spouts up from a slick multi-colored island composed of hardened mineral build-up. This one is a must-see, as is nearby  Orenda Spring , which is also surrounded by an odd colorful mineral deposit.

Saratoga mineral spring flowing out of a square, brick shaped fountain.

Once you reach the Geyser Island Spouter, other mineral springs are close by:

  • Hayes Well Spring: Salty water in view of Island Spouter.
  • Polaris Spring: Pleasant tasting. Contains low levels of radon gas.
  • Tallulah: Mild tasting.
  • Karista Springs: Metallic taste. Mud near the spring was historically used to treat arthritis.

Water flowing naturally from a stone mineral water fountain.

Check this trail map of Saratoga Spa State Park to find out which trails will also lead you to additional springs:

  • State Seal (Springs Trail): You’re most likely to find people filling up water jugs of this fresh and delicious water.
  • Charlie Spring : most recently drilled. Located near the Performing Arts Center.
  • Hathorn #3 : Was most popular in the heyday of the springs. Slightly cathartic, which, it will do you well to remember, that cathartic = laxative.

The park building across from Island Spouter is the  Creekside Classroom . They offer occasional guided tours of the mineral springs in Saratoga Spa State Park.

If you want to devote more time to hiking in the region, read my post about hiking in Lake George . Lake George is only about 35 miles north of Saratoga Springs.

4. Visit the First Known Mineral Spring in Saratoga at High Rock Park

Pavilion covering a mineral water spring in the park.

Remember Sir William Johnson, the British agent who was healed by the minerals springs, which was followed by the development of Saratoga Springs as a prime health tourism destination?

It was High Rock Springs where Johnson was taken, located in High Rock Park .

Today, High Rock Springs isn’t much to look at. It’s basically a mound of built-up minerals leaking just a tiny stream of water and is blocked from public use by a pavilion. However, because of its historical significance, it’s well worth visiting.

Soon after Johnson’s healing at High Rock, the first settlement in Saratoga Springs was established. An interesting timeline follows:

  • 1848: High Rock Spring was purchased by a company who built a brick enclosure around it. They began to bottle and sell the water.
  • 1865: The spring was purchased again. The new owners built a pavilion, topped with a golden eagle, around the spring.
  • 1866: The pavilion was so expensive that the owners had to declare bankruptcy.
  • 1872: The spring and pavilion were auctioned off. Saratoga High Rock Spring Company bought it for $16,000. They bottled and sold the water for three decades.
  • 1911: High Rock Spring ran dry.
  • 2015: The city redrilled High Rock Spring and it began to flow again.

One interesting thing to note: when the first protective enclosure was built around the springs in 1848, young attendants called “dipper boys” provided visitors with samples of the water. One of the “dippers” they used can be seen at the Saratoga Springs History Museum .

If you climb the stairs in the park, you’ll see that an artifact from the earliest settlement still exists in the form of the popular Olde Bryan Inn, a restaurant still in operation that was first established in 1773.

Additional mineral spring water fountains in the High Rock Area include Governor Spring, Peerless Spring, Empire Spring, and Old Red Spring.

Tips for Visiting Saratoga Mineral Springs

  • Stop at the Saratoga Springs Visitor Center and grab all the brochures you can find related to the mineral springs.
  • Talk to the knowledgeable staff who work there.
  • Take a guided tour, either at Congress Park or Saratoga Spa State Park.
  • If visiting without a tour, take a water bottle or paper cup to sample the waters.

It depends on the source of the water. Some have a salty taste, others are rusty like iron. Some are neutral and leave little impression. I tasted the water at Hathorn #1 (near Congress Park) and it was almost exactly like sipping on AlkaSeltzer.

The water remains at a constant 55 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, in contrast to hot springs that dot the Western states in the U.S.

One article I read said the mineral waters taste different depending on the time of year , and my Congress Park tour guide Marcia said they gush more strongly during a full moon.

Are the mineral fountains free to visit?

Yes. The only experience I’ve talked about that costs money is a bath at Roosevelt Baths & Spa. The others are free mineral springs  and are scattered around the city.

What minerals are in Saratoga Springs Water?

The waters all essentially contain the same minerals but the levels vary depending on how deep in the earth the water came from.

Some examples of minerals that can be found in the waters are sodium, calcium, magnesium, ammonia, iron, and chloride.

Several different pamphlets that I collected list the level of minerals that can be found in each spring, like in this Mineral Springs Guide to Saratoga Spa State Park .

Is the mineral water carbonated?

Yes, though the level of fizziness varies. The natural carbonation, caused by the carbonic acid interacting with the water, is one of the fascinating properties that makes the mineral water springs in Saratoga unique.

Why does it smell like eggs?

That smell comes from the sulfur gas which, because it’s a gas, exists in the air rather than in the water. So even if you do smell eggs—which I rarely did and only slightly—you shouldn’t taste it in the water.

I loved running around town and checking out the Saratoga mineral springs in all its different forms. And even though I didn’t—luckily—have an affliction to heal, I did end up benefitting from the stress-reducing properties the waters are supposed to have.

Have you experienced the mineral waters in Saratoga? Let me know what your favorite part of the experience was!

30 Best Weekend Spa Getaways in Every Region of the U.S.

These luxurious, unique and entirely life-changing spa services are just a road trip away.

25 best spa weekend getaways relaxing spa services and beautiful resorts

Travelers are in their wellness era with spa getaways and holistic retreats seeing record numbers of visitors, and there's never been a better time to get in on the relaxation. Many resorts have invested in renovating their spas, reimagining treatment rooms, improving changing areas and creating sanctuaries for pre- and post-service relaxation.

You'd also save some serious cash by driving to one of the destinations rather than having to cover airfare. That's why we included 30 glorious picks from all across the country so you're sure to find something in your neck of the woods. The Good Housekeeping team has personally vetted most of these selections so you can feel confident in the quality. Bliss begins here.

The Breakers Palm Beach, Palm Beach, FL

best spa weekend getaways breakers resort palm beach

North of Miami, the indoor-outdoor spa at The Breakers Palm Beach is every bit as divine as the Italian Renaissance-style property itself. The sprawling spa, with 17 treatment rooms and eight salon stations, overlooks the resort's private beachfront. Post-treatment, you can sip tea and nosh on snacks in the serene courtyard. Chill vibes all around!

Signature Service: Billed as the spa's most extensive rejuvenating treatment, the 80-minute Guerlain Black Orchid Facial (using the brand's famed black cream) works to reinforce topical skin's firmness and aims to reduce wrinkles while redefining natural facial contours.

The West Hollywood EDITION, West Hollywood, CA

tbest spa weekend getaways the spa at edition west hollywood

This luxury hotel's minimalist design carries over to its award-winning spa. Focusing on wellness and mindfulness, the spa includes a spiritual meditation space with treatments such as a sound bath and LED-light therapy in addition to massages, facials and body treatments. It's truly a sanctuary on LA's Sunset Strip. Après-spa fun can be had at the rooftop pool and at Ardor, which offers veggie delights such as vegan carrot cake, mushroom terrine and sweet potato curry in addition to fish and meat dishes.

Signature Service: Sweeping dry brush exfoliation and a soothing full-body scrub await those who book a RENEW body treatment , which works to stimulate and soften targeted skin. Harnessing sea salt and organic algae, the Undaria Algae Body Butter used in this application hydrates skin and aids in feeling refreshed. Three "Stay All Day" packages offer treatment bundles — the DESERT includes the RENEW body treatment, light therapy and a stone massage.

JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, Scottsdale, AZ

best spa weekend getaways jw marriott camelback inn spa

Arizona is a haven for spa experiences, and the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa stands out as one of the greats. The 32,000-square-foot facility contains 30 treatment rooms plus saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and a stunning adult-only outdoor pool so you can keep spa-ing all afternoon. Calling the Sonoran Desert "a natural apothecary," the spa offers treatments that use local ingredients like prickly pear cactus gel. The resort's recently renovated casitas are roomy enough to bring a bunch of friends or family.

Signature Service: Select the Southwestern-inspired Adobe Clay Detox Wrap to help melt away tension. A technician will massage an aromatic conditioner into your hair and apply clay to your skin to soothe your muscles. It all gets washed off in a Vichy shower using soap and a cactus fiber cloth and then you're adorned with warmed juniper and sage oils. The final step: relaxing in the sauna.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, Beaver Creek, CO

best spa weekend getaways bachelor gulch spa ritz carlton

Want to ski and spa? The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, is your place. The newly renovated ski-in, ski-out resort is nestled within Vail's Beaver Creek, a true winter wonderland. Hit the slopes in the morning, book a treatment for after lunch and then linger in the spa's naturally sourced rock-lined grottos. Hot and cold plunge pools and sauna access are also included with your stay. Rooms with stone fireplaces and wood accents further elevate the mountain vibe.

Signature Service: The Miner's Mineral Mud Wrap uses activated charcoal mud from the region to refresh your skin. After a body wrap, scalp massage and bath, a full body massage with rich amethyst oil completes this 100-minute service.

Sea Island Resort, Sea Island, GA

best spa weekend getaways spa at sea island georgia

Welcoming guests since the 1920s, this Southern gem sits on a private island with miles of unspoiled beaches. Grand yet unassuming, pretty much any type of traveler — the foodie, the golfer, the nature buff — would find joy at Sea Island Resort. But spa-goers will be on cloud nine. Nestled within The Cloister, the resort's flagship hotel, The Spa at Sea Island features circular whirlpools overlooking the sweeping grounds, a myriad of outdoor hot tubs, a mediation labyrinth and a garden atrium (shown).

Signature Service: You can't go wrong with any of the spa's 12 massage options, but the Scalp, Hands and Feet Massage is genius. The 60-minute treatment zeros in on these three problem spots, rejuvenating them with oils.

Edgewood Tahoe Resort, Stateline, NV

best spa weekend getaways edgewood resort lake tahoe

This luxury LEED-certified resort on Lake Tahoe just opened villa suites that take luxury to a new level. Located near the main lodge and golf course, the suites include kitchens, a heated private patio with a fire pit and soaking tubs. They come in two- to five-bedroom options, so you can invite friends to join you for the resort's array of activities in every season and, of course, treatments at Spa Edgewood. From massages to facials, many spa menu options use locally sourced stones, such as Smoky Quartz.

Signature Service: A 75-minute Sierra Stone Facial uses warmed gemstones sourced from Lake Tahoe to refresh your skin. Coupled with a relaxing, rejuvenating treatment with Eminence products, it helps spa-goers hit the slopes or the shores with a new glow.

Alderbrook Resort & Spa, Union, WA

best spa weekend getaways alderbrook resort and spa

Just a 90-minute drive from Seattle, Alderbrook Resort & Spa feels like a total escape. On the shores of Hood Canal (a fjord in Puget Sound), Alderbrook delights with panoramic views of Olympic National Park and pure wilderness. You can take a dip in the enclosed saltwater pool or hike on a nature trail whenever the mood strikes. But spa appointments fill up weeks in advance, so book them when you make your room reservation.

Signature Service : Moisturize dry skin with the spa's 60-minute Organic Aloe Wrap . The aloe is combined with locally sourced algae and lavender. The treatment also includes an aromatherapy-aided massage of your scalp, neck and feet.

The Lake House at Canandaigua, Canandaigua, NY

best spa weekend getaways willowbrook spa the lake house

A timelessly designed getaway in New York's Finger Lakes, the Lake House at Canandaigua sweeps you off your feet from the moment you pull up. The 125-room resort might remind you of a giant vacation house — and that's what the developers had in mind. They wanted to create an experience that feels elevated yet familiar. That philosophy carries over to the Willowbrook Spa, home to a private garden and creekside saunas. The spa even creates proprietary herbal oil blends featured in its extensive spa treatment list. A Good Housekeeping staffer who visited was impressed with the spa consultation that directed her to which of the 20+ treatments would best fit her needs.

Signature Service : Start your morning early with a private Sauna Ritual for a group of up to four guests, which includes a targeted blend of aromatherapy topicals for your pleasure. Plus, the Instagram-friendly sauna barrels are just steps from the waterfront — an idyllic setting just after sunrise.

Cheeca Lodge & Spa, Islamorada, FL

best spa weekend getaways cheeca lodge and spa, marathon keys

The Florida Keys' subtropical marine wetlands set the scene for a secluded yet inviting environment at Cheeca Lodge & Spa, all while providing plenty of under-the-sun fun for kids of all ages. The historic resort, which occupies 27 mangrove-packed acres in Islamorada, has delegated exclusive amenities to its spa patrons — including butler-serviced poolside cabanas, a wellness lounge and six treatment rooms providing a wide array of services featuring fair-trade products. Enroll kids ages 5 to 12 in Camp Cheeca and while they're painting coconuts and going on scavenger hunts, you can treat yourself to a spa day.

Signature Service : If you truly can't make up your mind, go with the 80-minute Cheeca Spa Sampler , a massage-facial combo. Or lean into the Jade Stone Massage , which is complemented with a cranial wave head massage and customizable body treatments based on personal preferences.

Goldener Hirsch, Auberge Resort Collection, Park City, UT

best spa weekend getaways goldener hirsch

If you're on the hunt for physical rejuvenation beyond just spa treatments, Goldener Hirsch is just the ticket. Hop on the nearby chairlift to be whisked to Deer Valley, one of the best ski resorts in the country, then return from your runs to soak in an infinity hot tub with stunning mountain views or meditate in the Zen garden. All the resort's rooftop wellness facilities — including a pool — received a glow-up recently.

Signature Service: Sign up for High Vibrations Energy Healing. This 45- to 90-minute Reiki treatment will leave you feeling revitalized. Keep in mind that you need to book five days in advance.

Inn by the Sea, Cape Elizabeth, ME

best spa weekend getaways inn by the sea spa maine

Depending on the season, you can enjoy a beachy or hygge stay at this coastal Maine resort near Portland. In warmer weather, spa therapists conduct certain full-body treatments and revitalizing facials al fresco , just above Cape Elizabeth's shoreline. When cold weather returns, you can cozy up in one of the beach-view suites with gas fireplaces until your spa appointment. The spa menu is vast and features many treatments with a beach theme.

Signature Service: The Changing Tides treatment combines a hydrating scrub with a warming wrap for two hours of pure bliss. Check the "spa specials" every month to learn about seasonal treatments and deals.

The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, LA

ritz carlton new orleans spa

NOLA is for jazz, beignets and spas! In its prime French Quarter location, the newly renovated spa at The Ritz-Carlton features eucalyptus-infused steam rooms and lofty relaxation lounges featuring complimentary champagne and lite bites. Spanning 25,000 square feet, the city's largest spa has a wide array of treatments.

Signature Service : Newcomers often opt for the spa's Voodoo Ritual 80-minute massage, which uses local incense and a proprietary mix of absinthe and bourbon in body oils to banish tension.

Destination Kohler, Kohler, WI

destination kohler, wisconsin

You may know Kohler for its high-quality faucets, but the brand also boasts golf and resort destinations worldwide. The spa at its flagship property, The American Club — about 150 miles north of Chicago — recently received a glow-up, making it the only five-star experience in Wisconsin. The thoughtful redesign introduced floor-to-ceiling windows to give spa-goers stunning views during manis and pedis. Plush furnishings and a cozy fireplace in the massage finishing lounge encourage guests to linger and relax in the sanctuary-like surroundings before heading to their room. There are three kinds of accommodations — you can stay at the high-end historic hotel, a lakefront inn or one of five private cabins.

Signature Service: The Kohler Waters Spa focuses on — what else? — the power of mineral-rich water. Try the new Fire and Ice, a hydrotherapy treatment under a custom Vichy shower. It includes a carrot seed oil facial, peppermint-infused ice spheres and body butter. EXPLORE NOW

Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, Manalapan, FL

eau palm beach resort spa

An exquisite property that feels like its own little oasis, Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa appeals to guests of all ages. A Good Housekeeping staffer who recently visited with her spouse and daughter appreciated the kids' activities, well-equipped fitness center and standout restaurants. The spa, in particular, was a favorite. "The spa was outrageously amazing," she said. "I had the best massage." She added, "They have these beautiful gardens in the spa and amazing amenities. I wish I had planned to spend more time at the spa. I would suggest going early to enjoy most of your day there." The icing on the cake: You can even have your treatment in a private garden villa.

Signature Service: Try The Royal Recovery , which starts with a foot scrub and shea butter wrap followed by a massage of the head, neck, shoulders and feet. Divine!

The Greystone Inn, Lake Toxaway, NC

best spa weekend getaways grey stone inn, north carolina

This historic Swiss-chalet-style retreat on a private lake in the Appalachian Mountains leans into holistic wellness. With just 30 rooms, the property is one of the most intimate on our list, so it's not surprising that its spa offers an array of body and skin care treatments that can be personalized. Round out your spa trip by kayaking across the lake, taking a free sunset cruise or simply basking in the view of the adjacent National Forests.

Signature Service : Full-body massages aside, facials are popular for visitors. The 60-minute Greystone Signature Facial includes a cleansing application, steaming and deep exfoliation along with a facial massage that targets lymphatic drainage and face sculpting.

The Lodge at Spruce Peak, Stowe, VT

best spa weekend getaways spruce spa vermont

If you're torn between a spa weekend and a family getaway, The Lodge Spruce Peak provides the best of both at a picturesque mountain destination. Alongside its many offerings for adults, the Spa offers a selection of services for kids ages 3 to 14. Everyone is welcome at the resort's Healing Lodge with his and hers saunas, hot tubs and steam rooms. And, of course, kids will love the heated outdoor pool. Multi-bedroom suites provide plenty of space for the whole family.

Signature Services A trip to Vermont isn't complete without sampling local brew, and spa therapists have embraced the perk into a truly singular spa treatment known as the Stowe Cider Uber Scrub . You'll enjoy a full-body application of naturally spiced cider sugar scrub to buff out overworked skin and enjoy a full sample of local Stowe Cider to sip in the spa sanctuary post-treatment. For the kiddos, a Princess Pedicure will leave their toes smelling bakery fresh.

Coupled with an Aveda salon, the resort's Lakeside Spa offers a wide array of treatments. It will be open from April 26 to October 27, 2024.

Signature Service : Harnessing the island's fresh supply, the Lakeside Spa offers a unique Lilac Facial & Body Treatment , which includes proprietary skincare products and massage oils that you won't find elsewhere. Capped off with a hydrating foot mask and hot towel service in the spa's charming treatment center.

Spring Creek Ranch, Jackson Hole, WY

best spa weekend getaways spring ranch creek

Taking a vacation to marvel at the natural beauty of the American West doesn't always mean you have to be "roughing" it. Spread out on a high butte of its own in Jackson Hole, Spring Creek Ranch is just a stone's throw from Grand Teton National Park and a short drive from Yellowstone. The resort's Wilderness Adventure Spa is framed with sweeping views of the Teton Mountains and is flanked by the hotel's grounds, which are also designated as a wildlife sanctuary. You'll take it all in from the spa's 20-person outdoor saltwater hot tub, which feels like a magical escape in almost any season.

Signature Service: Start with a Teton Forest Massage , which combats the dry, high-altitude air with a mineral scrub and mud-bubbling along your spine. You'll end the service with a full body wrap massage using locally inspired oils.

The Lodge at Woodloch, Hawley, PA

best spa weekend getaways inn at woodloch spa pennsylvania

Within driving distance from New York City and the DC area, this adult-only Pocono Mountain escape (the sister property of Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner Woodloch Lodge) offers access to activities ranging from art classes to workout sessions. Rooms are outfitted with grand verandas dressed in lush greenery, a theme that translates well into its 40,000-square-foot spa with 27 treatment rooms. There are a lot of treatments to choose from, like hydrotherapy and carefully constructed prenatal services, making it a great weekend escape from city life in any season.

Signature Service : Bodywork is a focal point at the spa. With therapists leaning into everything from Reiki to reflexology, you'll receive a blend of approaches with a Restful Retreat , which combines gentle body, scalp and foot massages and aromatherapy to help you feel at ease. The warmed swaddle is just a bonus!

Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort, Santa Ana Pueblo, NM

best spa weekend getaways tamaya mist, hyatt regency resort

Nestled between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, the Tamaya Spa is the jewel of this Hyatt resort on the Santa Ana Pueblo. Guests often come to experience the rich local native culture and sample time-honored Tamayame cuisine, or spend as much time exploring the surrounding valleys and the Rio Grande riverbanks. A low-level sprawling 12,000-square-foot retreat from the hot sun and desert climate, the spa offers amenities that sprawl out into surrounding dry lands (including outdoor soaking pools!) and seamlessly blend into your itinerary on a trip to the rich lands of New Mexico.

Signature Service: The HydraFacial helps to rejuvenate skin using hydra-dermabrasion techniques, resulting in skin feeling smoother and refreshed. You can add LED-light therapy at no extra cost to the 50-minute treatment.

We had a flight that landed very early in the morning. Guidevto Iceland suggested transportation to Blue Lagoon and then on to Reykjavik. This was a excellent idea, as it was so nice to float around after a long flight, and the bus got us to Reykjavik when it was check in time at our hotel

Prompt pick up by driver who had a challenging return journey through very, very strong crosswinds & heavy snow. Great driving! The Hot Springs are small, intimate and not commercialised like other Spas. Cosy restaurant. Definitely recommend and will visit again when we return to Iceland next year.

Hot and cold snorkeling and spa tour with DIVE.IS, Iceland

Hot and Cold Snorkeling and Spa tour

The perfect golden circle self-drive combo.

tripadvisor-travelers-choice-award-2023.png

Snorkel in the cold water, then warm up in warm water

If you are interested in taking on the natural elements in Iceland, this tour is for you! You will snorkel in the cold, unbelievably clear water in one of the world’s most fantastic snorkel sites, Silfra , then warm up with the steam from a hot spring in the relaxing Laugarvatn Fontana spa.

The Snorkeling part of this tour was awarded 3rd place on the Best of the Best Traveler's choice award of 2023 by Tripadvisor as well as being in the 5th place on the Best of the Best Traveler's choice award of 2022 by Tripadvisor and was selected Tripadvisor's No 4 experience in the world in 2019!

We can proudly state that DIVE.IS will offer you the best service level at Silfra. Let us tell you why:

  • We built our own changing room so that our guests have the opportunity to dress up inside a heated changing van.
  • After snorkeling in the cold water, we warm you up with hot cocoa and cookies.
  • Our guides are all experienced PADI divemasters and instructors that have been through professional training before running any of our tours

Your adventure begins with the snorkeling tour of Silfra. Silfra, the famous fissure between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, provides an underwater experience unlike anywhere else on earth. Floating in the crystal clear glacial water will give you the sensation of flying as you pass through an expansive canyon created by the slow separation of the tectonic plates.

This is the Cold part of this experience but don't worry, Silfra is always a comfortable 2-3°C. You will also be provided with a dry suit and an undergarment to keep you dry and warm, only your face and hands will experience the cold.

After your 30-40 minute snorkeling session in Silfra, you can explore the Thingvellir area as you wish before moving on to Laugarvatn Fontana to warm up.

Laugarvatn village has been a place to bathe since viking times as a geothermal hot spring is situated right by Lake Laugarvatn warming up the water. Laugarvatn Fontana took the idea one step further and built their steam rooms on top of the bubbling hot spring making the experience truly Icelandic. Guests can also relax in the natural pools and hot tubs in between dips in the cold lake.

Silfra and Laugarvatn Fontana are both on the Golden circle , making this tour the perfect Golden Circle activity and spa self-drive combo in Iceland! Once you are hot you can continue on the Golden circle, you are only a stone's throw away from the famous hot spring Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall.

This is a combo self-drive tour (pick up is not an option). Meeting point for Silfra Snorkeling is at Thingvellir National Park . The drive from Reykjavik is about 1 hour.

Please visit Laugarvatn Fontana for their location. The drive from Silfra is about 30 minutes. The time on your voucher is an approximate time. You do not have to go at that time, your voucher is valid all day. Laugarvatn Fontana also has an excellent lunch and dinner buffet plus the one and only Geothermal Bakery where you can experience the very Icealandic pot-baked bread we call Rúgbrauð.

If someone in your party doesn't snorkel but wants to visit the spa with you, you can book them in from the other tours page .

Our Souvenirs can be purchased in your booking process by selecting them under "Extras". If the Souvenir you are looking for is not listed below, please contact us or leave a comment in your booking and we will bring it on tour with us. Photos from your tour can be purchased directly from your guide at Silfra for 3000 ISK.

Snorkeling in 2 degrees of celcius

We book the hot and cold snorkeling and spa tour with Dive.is, and we had an incredible time. The snorkeling was very well organized and guided by Andreas, and I have to say it didn´t feel that cold. Hot chocolate and cookies after the Snorkeling and totally recommend the spa afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Over the years we have collected the questions our divers have asked in regards to our tours. Here are the most frequent ones. For the full searchable catalog view our FAQ page .

In general, the answer is yes. However, it can happen on rare occasions that your Silfra snorkeling guide is not able to take photos because he/she might be busy assisting other snorkelers in the water. Another uncommon reason could be that the camera has a problem. In this unlikely case you will be refunded for the tour photos should you already have purchased them online in advance.

We use top-quality equipment for our Snorkeling and Scuba Diving tours.

The dry suits only do a certain amount of dives/time before they get sold and replaced by new ones.

This ensures that our guests will always dive/snorkel in top-notch dry suits frequently tested, serviced or replaced.

However, it is of high importance to provide us with your correct size (height and weight), so we can make sure to bring the best fit for you. If we receive an incorrect size, the guest will receive an incorrect dry suit fit. We assure you that your size information as well as all other personal information stays confidential with us.

We also want to point out that if you are sensitive to having something tight around your neck and/or wrists you might feel uncomfortable in a dry suit. It goes with the territory to have a well-sealing neoprene neck seal and rubber wrist seals in order to stay dry.

Yes, we offer a variety of Souvenirs of Silfra and DIVE.IS includes photo packages, t-shirts, jumpers, hoodies, hats, logbooks, postcards and stickers. Please take a look at our Souvenir page for more detailed information. If you want to receive souvenirs at Silfra, we recommend pre-paying for them, as the guides only bring a handful of things in random sizes. You can also come by our dive shop and see what we have available.

Yes, there are toilet facilities at Silfra . However we kindly ask you to not use them for changing, as there are only 2 toilets at Silfra and it can cause long queues to form. We do have a changing room vehicle , and often several other cars at Silfra for participants to change clothes in. Due to this layout, we highly recommend that participants arrive at Silfra already wearing their thermal base layer.

Unfortunately, there is no food sold directly at Silfra . There is however a restaurant at the Thingvellir Information Centre which is located just 3,5km away from Silfra.

All bookings need to be paid for in advance, due to the high demand for our tours. If however a booking is made on-site, the payment can be taken there either by credit/debit card or cash. Payment for souvenirs can be made on-site by both card and cash transactions.

Even though the dry suits are very buoyant and keep you afloat, it is a requirement that all participants must be able to swim and feel comfortable in water to join the tour. This is for your own safety and comfort. You do however not need to be a very strong swimmer, merely able to swim and be comfortable in the water.

The Þingvellir National Park charges a parking fee, which allows you to park in any of the five car parks in the park for the duration of the day. Please note that the parking lot for divers and snorkelers at Silfra is called P5 and is about a 5-minute walk to the Silfra meeting point. You can pay for parking on CheckIt before or during the day of the visit, and enter the license plate of your car into the system. Cameras check all license plates entering and leaving the parking lots. If you can’t pay online, you can pay at the Visitor center. Pay machines will also be installed at the parking lots in the near future. The pay machines accept all major credit/debit cards.

Yes, if you want to give someone a nice present, it will be our pleasure to prepare a nice gift certificate for you. The certificate can be made for all of our tours, courses or any other products you find on our website. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your ideas .

It is about 60 km from Reykjavik to Silfra and it takes a little less than one hour to drive the distance by car, given the weather conditions are good. If you choose to drive to Silfra yourself and don‘t know the way, we recommend you to study the map before you hit the road. Silfra is located in Þingvellir National Park , which is a bit different from other national parks. At a point, when you turn into road 36, you will feel like you are driving into the middle of nowhere. Please do not turn around, just keep going straight until you see our company cars which are parked at the Silfra Meeting Point, you then drive a little further to parking lot P5 to park. If at anytime you feel lost please do not hesitate to call our office for help.

The tour time is between 2.5 and 3 hours from start to finish at Silfra, not including pick-up and drop-off times. The speed of the tour depends on the participants in the group and the number of people at Silfra, so if you are planning a second activity afterwards, please consider a maximum time frame of three hours. Please note that this is the duration of the tour on-site at Silfra. If you have chosen to use our transport options, your tour time will be between five and six hours from pick up to drop off.

Silfra is located in Thingvellir National Park, one of the main sites of the Golden Circle. It is a stunningly beautiful area, as well as being one of Iceland's most important historical sites. There are many walking trails around the park and close by Silfra, and many of the areas have information signs telling you about the historical & geological aspects of the area around Silfra and Thingvellir.

To join any of our scuba dive tours, you need to:

  • Be at the level of PADI Open Water Diver or above. Equivalent dive certifications from other dive organizations are sufficient.
  • Have a dry suit dive certification OR 10 logged dry suit dives within the last two years of the dive tour date and be able to provide written proof from a diving instructor of these dry suit dives.

Aquatic Heroes: The best spas offering hydrotherapies

MONKEY ISLAND ESTATE, Bray-on-Thames, UK

Monkey Island Estate

It started in 1197, when the Merton Priory monks settled near a small island in the middle of the Thames, in a village called Bray. In the years to come, this clerical dwelling would pass, like water through fingers, between noble families and gentry; it would survive great fires and become renowned for its fish ponds, which evolved into the picturesque site of an 18th-century Duke of Marlborough’s angling pavilion. In the late 19th century it would be converted into a riverside inn; in the Belle Époque, a dazzling hotel, famous for its society balls that blazed throughout the Roaring Twenties – until later, when it would fall out of sight and mind. That is, until YTL – the hotel group that made it chic to spa again in Bath, with the Gainsborough – rebuilt and reinvigorated this long-forgotten gem. Fast-forward to today, and Monkey Island Estate stands resplendent, a bright white beacon on the banks of Bray: its 17th-century frescos – depictions of monkeys punting, fishing and hunting – carefully repainted; its rooms reinvigorated with contemporary country chintz; its surrounding cottages (perfect for those seeking solitude) thoughtfully restored. And buoyant on the same river that royalty once rowed upon is a watery refuge: a specially commissioned ‘floating spa’. Inspired by a former apothecary’s barge once moored at the Chelsea Physic Garden – where visitors traded exotic plants, herbs and powders – the royal-blue barge is moored at the end of the hotel’s lawns, on a glorious stretch of river populated by Eton rowers whizzing past in the sunshine. Duck inside to discover calm, wood-panelled interiors, where treatments take place in cosy cabins and the water dances across low ceilings in shimmering waves. The Floating Massage is a must: a sedative, full-body stretch and pummelling, performed on a waterbed (a soothing experience, heightened by the gentle rocking of the barge). Otherwise, try the Monks’ Elixir, which commences with a sharp sip of herby-tasting Chartreuse, before flowing into a full-body massage using monastic garden-sourced oils and detoxifying lymphatic drainage. In a place awash with heritage and history, the power of water comes alive like nowhere else. Double, from £275 ( monkeyislandestate.co.uk ).

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to make a series of ‘regal’ appearances in ‘coming days and weeks’ as she launches her lifestyle brand, sources claim

Do not be seduced by the old-school glamour of Northern Italy’s most legendary spa hotel. Past the ornate chandeliers, the swathes of marble and explosions of orchids lies a steely approach to wellness that takes no prisoners. Their infamous detox method is not for the faint-hearted: fasting for 30 hours on broth gives way to marginally more filling fare (delicate, organic vegetable risotto) – with a daily side of hydro-mud therapy. This much-lauded ritual involves bathing in essential oil-rich waters, a detoxifying seaweed and clay wrap, plus a bracing (and rather undignified) rinse-down with a power hose – excellent for jet lag and cellulite. The daily massages incorporate suctioning cups to reduce inflammation and sweep away toxins, while stern white-coated doctors prescribe blood tests, full body scans and personal training sessions. It’s gruelling, yes – but the climate is year-round sublime, and the forest views from the new Castello rooftop suite are nothing short of transporting. Most guests lose half a stone in a week, and new-found healthy habits remain intact long after departure. Healing Holidays ( healing-holidays.com ) offers a seven-night Detox programme, from £4,999, including flights and transfers.

SCHLOSSHOTEL FISS, Tyrol, Austria

Schlosshotel Fiss

This grand, family-run hotel has long attracted Euro royals to its chic, slope-side rooms and elegant assortment of restaurants. But the real star of the show is the 5,000sqm spa. The adult-only main Schloss Spa is a sleek stone warren of saunas, steam rooms, icy outdoor plunge pools, Kneipp pools and relaxation lounges with chic day beds encircling crackling open fires – while treatments cover every possibility from vigorous post-ski massages to gentle joint realignment and thoughtful physiotherapy. There are targeted facials from QMS Medicosmetics and detoxifying, skin-soothing rituals from Pharmos Natur. But the best part is that, while parents have a few hours of alpine indulgence, smalls can frolic in the vast watery wonder of Aqua Monte, a series of indoor and outdoor spring-water-fed pools and water slides looking right onto the beautiful mountains. Double, from £164, half board ( schlosshotel-fiss.com ).

ANASSA, Cyprus, Greece

Anassa

All is secluded and serene on the coastal stretch where Anassa sits: the land abounds in olive groves and cypress trees, wild boar roam the hills, and the terracotta-tiled hotel is surrounded by white villas sprung with bougainvillea. While outdoors is all Mediterranean chic, inside is modern – lots of marble and wood – and perfectly chilled against the heat. Yet for all the luxuries, the tennis courts and the freshwater pools (a bar adjoins one, so you can swim up for mojitos) – the attraction is the world- famous spa, Thalassa: Greek for sea. Through a cobbled courtyard, lulled by the tinkling of a water fountain, visitors will discover a Romanesque pool surrounded by columns, a hydrotherapy pool and state-of-the-art gym where triathletes train. Treatments incorporate the all-natural Tata Harper range; a star is the Infinity Body Ritual, which involves two hours of being buffed, doused in oil and blissfully massaged. Guests leave, skin gleaming, feeling drenched in wellness. The Healthy Holiday Company offers seven nights from £1,750, including breakfast, flights and transfers ( thehealthyholidaycompany .co.uk).

CHIVA-SOM, Hua Hin, Thailand

ChivaSom

Few places are as physically, mentally and spiritually nurturing as this oasis of birdsong, rippling water and teak pavilions. But now, fresh from its recent revamp, Chiva-Som delivers more than ever: its 70 treatment rooms have been refined and refreshed; a new Watsu pool gleams with jade tiles; its bathing pavilion is more exquisite and expansive than before. Though it’s the naturopathic doctors here who really impress, and who know how to set guests on the path to wellness: whether the goal is to lose weight or to reduce stress levels. Recalibration takes place almost imperceptibly – lying beside the flower-garlanded pool, walking along the beach at daybreak with the tide washing over feet, or during full immersion in healing practices: from flotation therapy to calm mind and body, to colonic hydrotherapy that leaves one feeling tangibly lighter. Remarkably, its approach hasn’t dated (in 25 years) thus it remains a classic: charged with an extraordinary power to shake off negativity and bring about positive, long-term, change. Healing Holidays ( healing-holidays.com ) offers seven nights from £4,159, full board, including a wellness consultation, daily treatment, £625 wellness credit, British Airways flights and transfers.

CLIFF HOUSE HOTEL, Ardmore, Ireland

Image may contain Pool Water Building Resort Hotel and Swimming Pool

A glassy, grassy vision set into cliffs; an inky Irish Sea tossing below… There’s no more atmospheric place to soak up the charms of the Emerald Isle than the Cliff House Hotel. Misty mornings make bathing alfresco (in roll-top tubs filled with skin-rejuvenating seaweed) strangely comforting; the whispering of waves during top-to-toe grainy scrubs and muscle-melting hot stone massages put busy minds on pause. For the intrepid, there’s direct access to the sea for wild swimming and kayaking before a ramble along the rugged coast-line, where blustery winds and blackberry-picking amid sprawling bramble bushes will put the colour back into cheeks. Reward comes in the form of sublime potato bread with whipped butter, savoured at dinner – the Michelin-starred house restaurant draws diners from across the country – to the soundtrack of silvery peaks of seawater rising and falling below. Double, from £168 ( cliffhousehotel.ie ).

THE ROSEATE GANGES, Rishikesh, India

Image may contain Porch Terrace Building Deck Furniture Bench Patio and Wood

Overlooking perhaps one of Hinduism’s most holy rivers, The Roseate Ganges sources its water supply for the hotel and infinity pool in purified form – cleansing guests physically and emotionally. Mornings start with yoga on a private sandbank – proximity unique to Roseate; as the fog rises, guests can see monkeys swinging from trees while the Ganges flows at a meditative pace. No ancient carved sandalwood interiors – think luxurious modern minimalism with cottages boasting balcony views over the Himalayan foothills. By contrast, Aheli spa – Sanskrit for ‘pure’ – leads with 5,000-year-old Ayurveda; try the signature Abhyanga detoxification massage and Udwardanam for a svelte silhouette. In the restaurant, the exceptional food is plentiful, laced with locally sourced spices and herbs. Exploring nature in the surroundings is encouraged – don’t miss Ganga Aarti in Rishikesh (the ceremony praising the Goddess Ganga as the sun sets), along with water-rafting and tiger and leopard spotting in Rajaji National Park. Here, the guarantee of a spiritually uplifting stay is water tight. Double, from £360, half board ( roseatehotels.com ).

NOBU HOTEL, Los Cabos, Mexico

Image may contain Wood Hardwood Flooring Plywood Floor Interior Design and Indoors

The arrival of Nobu Los Cabos near the tip of the Baja Peninsula – where deep red sunsets spill over the Sea of Cortez – has brought an onsen-style approach to wellness (and a steady stream of Hollywood types nibbling on black cod tacos and artfully reclining on loungers by the pool). However, the velvet rope of the Nobu brand belies a truly hard-working spa: one with a no-nonsense Eastern approach to wellness that starts even before one lies down on the treatment table. Hot-and-cold hydrotherapy circuits jump-start sluggish circulation, before guests are left alone with a cup of herbal tea and a chic colouring book (a subtle meditation aid). Treatments are similarly thoughtful: the Nagomi Ritual, an almost ceremonial massage-based journey, delivers a lasting sense of calm for body and mind. But most note-worthy are the therapists who have a passion for wellness running through their veins (while administering some of the best massages in Baja California). Proof that there’s still substance behind the style at Nobu. Double, from £300 ( loscabos.nobuhotels.com ).

THANYAPURA, Phuket, Thailand

Thanyapura

Imagine an Olympic village hidden in the jungly heart of a spectacular tropical island, and you’ve got Thanyapura. The facilities are phenomenal: an athletics track, yoga, Pilates, tennis and volleyball courts, spinning studios, a Muay Thai boxing stadium, a mind-training centre, a spa and two competition-worthy swimming pools – perfect for some serious laps and serious people watching (the French and Japanese national teams are in regular attendance). Dive into the classes (over 100 per week), or opt in to one of 10 wellness packages, which may combine physiotherapy, IV drips and health diagnostics at the medical centre. If the spa and fitness options fail to tempt, then Phuket’s soft-sand, bright white Andaman-lapped beaches will... Healing Holidays ( healing-holidays.com ) offers a seven-night Yoga and Pilates programme, full board, from £2,099, including British Airways flights and transfers.

FALISIA RESORT, Portopiccolo, Italy

Falisia Resort

Serious seafarers will know about Portopiccolo, the former quarry formed by winds and waves, from the famous Barcolana Regatta – but the lure for land-lovers is Falisia, its gleaming hotel and spa. Inside, interiors are awash with azure and burnished metal; while in the cavernous 3,600sqm spa, stone lines the walls, loungers are carved into original rock formations, and from the sea-blue day beds guests can glimpse the 14th-century Castello di Duino. The private spa is something to behold, complete with a hammam and Finnish sauna, flotation tanks and even an Iyashi Dome (a Japanese infrared sauna, which bolsters immunity and sweeps away toxins) – while cosmeceutical facials and sculpting body treatments are as clean as their surroundings (traffic is banned at Portopiccolo, so there are no heavy metals or CO2 emissions). Try the Bora Body Treatment: a bracing caffeine and sea-salt scrub followed by a robust lymph-draining massage, which leaves legs feeling as fresh as the breeze that whips around the shore. Double, from £212 ( portopiccolosistiana.it ).

15 Best Things to Do in Spa (Belgium)

Resting in a valley close to where the Ardennes massif meets the Hautes Fagnes plateau is the world’s original spa resort.

Spa grew up around a natural source long praised for its supposed healing properties.

Charles II of England and Peter the Great came to take the waters at Spa, but these springs had been frequented for many centuries by that time, and were even described by Pliny the Elder.

Such was the importance of the resort for the upper crust in the 1700s and 1800s that “Spa” became the generic English term for hydrotherapy.

There are still lots of monuments left over from Spa’s apogee, from the oldest casino in Europe to the last place Marie Henriette of Austria called “home”.

1. Parc 7 Heures

Parc 7 Heures

In the 18th century Spa’s posh clientele needed somewhere to take a turn, and so this promenade was laid out on meadows by the Wayai stream.

The Parc de Sept Heures (Seven O’clock Park) maintains an aristocratic air with its alleys between hornbeams, limes and elms, and its surfeit of monuments, most from the 19th century.

The main sight is the 130-metre Galerie Léopold II (1878) with a coffered wooden ceiling and elegant cast iron columns.

This covered promenade is bookended by two regal pavilions, Pavillon Marie-Henriette (for Léopold II’s wife who died in Spa in 1902), and Pavillon des Petits Jeux.

There are also many more recent monuments scattered around the park, including one for the Armistice and for the opera composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (1891-1864). Just off the promenade is a neatly tended mini-golf course, and a funicular shuttles up the Colline d’Annette et Lubin hill for a pleasing view of Spa and surrounding woodland from the new spa centre.

2. Pouhon Pierre-le-Grand

Pouhon Pierre-le-Grand

The spring sheltered in this Neoclassical pavilion from 1880 is the most famous of the many that rise around Spa.

This is the source that gave birth to Spa as a resort, and takes its name from Peter the Great who “took the waters” on this very ground in 1717. Inside is the “Fontaine aux dauphins intérieure”, the most ornate of the many fountains in the town.

After a refurbishment, the pavilion reopened in 2012 as the new home of Spa’s tourist office.

The winter garden here was reworked into a venue for exhibitions and events.

3. Domaine de Berinzenne

Domaine De Berinzenne

Climbing out of Spa on the road to the south you’ll soon arrive at a beautiful estate, with misty moorland couched in forest.

A boardwalk lifts you over a patch of peat bog typical for the Hautes Fagnes.

A wonderful feature at Domaine de Berinzenne is the long avenue of limes leading up to the Musée de la Forêt et des Eaux.

This attraction uses creative exhibits to present the biodiversity of the Spa-Bérinzenne region.

There’s also a sweet little pond and an observation tower with vistas extending far to the east over the Hautes Fagnes.

And if you want info on hikes and cycling routes into Spa-Bérinzenne region, the Maison de la Nature is on hand, putting on temporary exhibitions and boasting a cafeteria.

4. Musée de la Ville d’Eaux

Musée De La Ville D'Eaux

The plush Villa royale Marie-Henriette (1863) was the final address of King Leopold II’s wife, Marie Henriette of Austria (1836-1902) and has been home to the city museum since 1970. The permanent exhibition deals with fine art and local craftsmanship, and includes a large array of handmade wooden items known as Jolités de Spa.

Originating in the 16th and 17th centuries, the name applies to expertly fashioned and finished clothes brushes, jewellery boxes, fans, sewing boxes, frames, writing cases, cups, snuffboxes and hearth brushes, to name a few.

On the ground floor the exhibition guides you through Spa’s past, explaining its progress as a resort and hydrotherapy trailblazer using videos, artefacts and historic documents.

5. Thermes de Spa

Thermes de Spa

In the 2000s Spa’s hydrotherapy centre was relocated to new upscale premises atop a hill overlooking the town.

You can follow a path beaten by centuries of years of visitors and come to “take the waters”, claimed to increase circulation, increase metabolism and benefit the skin.

Needless to say, things have changed a lot since the days of Peter the Great, and Thermes de Spa has up-to-date facilities, combining modern wellness with time-honoured hydrotherapy.

Available at this cylindrical glass building are an extensive range of wellness and beauty treatments, centred on the spring water, but including massage, facials, saunas, steam rooms, meditation sessions and much more.

There’s a long list of packages to pick from, while the Maman-Bébé institute specialises in care for new mothers and babies.

6. Lac de Warfaaz

Lac de Warfaaz

After a series of floods in the 19th century the Wayai stream was dammed to the north-east of Spa in 1892, giving rise to this 6.5-hectare lake, 600 metres in length.

Lac de Warfaaz is a couple of kilometres out of Spa and has paved banks lined with lofty horse chestnut trees for walkers, cyclists and anglers.

There’s a small huddle of restaurants, cafes and bars on the south shore, and in summer you can hire a pedalo from a little jetty for a paddle on the water.

7. Église Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Remacle

Église Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Remacle

Spa’s waters started to gain an international reputation in the 16th century and a Catholic parish was established in 1573. The solemn neo-Romanesque in the heart of the town is the third on the site and was ready in 1885. Before heading in you can check out the reliefs on the tympanums over the portals.

In the centre these show the risen Christ and Mary on her thrown, while below the left tower is Saint Remaclus with the wolf and below the right is Saint Hubertus (patron saint of hunters) and the deer with a vision of a crucifix between its antlers.

Standing out inside are the 17th-century Baroque sculptures of Remaclus, Mary, Joseph with Baby Jesus and Saint Roch.

There’s an eye-catching Byzantine-style Christ Pantocrator in the dome of the apse, and where the right transept meets the sanctuary you’ll find a masterful polychrome statue of Saint Remaclus from the mid-16th century.

Not far away on the right side of the choir is a votive canvas of Christ on the Cross, accompanied by Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, produced in 1598 by Liège artist Jean Ramey (c. 1530-1612).

8. Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

The venue for the Belgian F1 Grand Prix was built in the early-1920s and is just a ten-minute trip from Spa via the N62. This circuit, with its rippling topography and coniferous backdrop is billed as the most beautiful in the world.

It’s a claim that is hard to deny, and even people unfamiliar with motorsport may recognise the world-famous Eau Rouge and Raidillon combination, where drivers speed down a hill into a sharp left and then back up the slope into a fast, blind right-hander.

The Belgian Grand Prix usually falls around the end of August or start of September, but there’s something happening at the track every day of the week between mid-March and mid-November.

On a typical day you can head off on a guided tour at 14:00, with a multilingual guide pointing out the press room, commentators’ booths, podium, race control room and the paddocks for the Grand Prix and the Spa 24 Hours race.

9. Casino de Spa

Casino de Spa

No self-respecting destination for aristocrats and industrialists would do without a casino.

But what makes Spa’s special is its great age, going back to 1763, so it could be the oldest casino in the world.

This grand Neoclassical building is named the Redoute, which was the preferred French term for a gambling establishment in the 18th century.

The casino has come through prohibitions on gambling in 1872 and 1902, as well as fires in 1909 and again in 1917, which required reconstruction work until 1929. There are table games like roulette, Texas hold’em poker and blackjack, as well as slot machines shipped in from Las Vegas in the 2010s.

The minimum age is 21 and the casino stays open from 11:00 ’til sunrise.

10. Anciens Thermes de Spa

Anciens Thermes De Spa

Spa’s stately Renaissance Revival bathhouse was built in the 1860s to a design by Léon Suys, who also designed the Brussels Stock Exchange.

This is actually the third set of baths in Spa, the first established in 1828 where Spa’s town hall stands today.

For 135 years, bathers would head to this palatial building, which originally had 54 baths, six shower rooms of varying descriptions, two hydrotherapy rooms and two plunge pools.

There’s rich statuary cresting the pediment by Jacques Van Omberg and the Van Den Kerkhove brothers, and an interior with opulent stuccowork and frescos.

The Thermes de Spa moved home up the hill in 2003, and since then the building has lain empty awaiting a new purpose.

As of 2020, a long-term project was underway to turn it into a five-star hotel.

11. Spa Eaudyssée

Spa Eaudyssée

The headquarters for the Spa mineral water brand is within walking distance of the centre of Spa.

Awaiting you there is a visitor centre, open Monday to Friday and explaining every stage of the epic underground journey that Spa’s water makes from rainwater to the pure, naturally filtered product in its bottles.

In these experiential galleries with tablet computers and tactile displays there’s also information about the importance of the water cycle and the origin of the Spa brand and the leapfrogging Pierrot on its logo.

At the end you’ll be able to select a bottle of still, carbonated or fruit-infused water from Spa’s range take with you.

12. SpaForest

SpaForest

In Spa’s wooded backyard there’s a high ropes centre where you’ll shimmy from treetop to treetop via fun and challenging transitions, all the while clipped onto a safety line.

There are three courses to try out, with rope ladders, ziplines and all manner of precarious bridges that will need coordination and a sense of balance to conquer.

SpaForest has a wide choice of other activities on offer, from Nordic walking to archery to survival workshops, and has just stocked a fleet of all-mountain electric scooters.

13. Château de Franchimont

Château de Franchimont

For an easy excursion, this ruined Medieval and Renaissance castle can be reached in 15 minutes from Spa.

The Château de Franchimont is thought to have been raised in the 11th century by the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.

It is roosted on a spur over the right bank of the Hoëgne, a left tributary of the Vesdre.

The castle was modified all through the Medieval period, but what’s compelling is how it was adapted in the early 16th century for gunpowder.

Added at that time are casemates, pentagonal outer ramparts and an artillery tower that now houses an exhibition about the site.

The bastions on the corners, accessed via underground passages are a thrilling artefact of Renaissance warfare.

By the end of the 16th century artillery to the point where the castle could be picked off from nearby hills and so it was abandoned and later partially destroyed by Louis XIV.

14. RAVeL Spa-Stavelot

RAVeL Spa-Stavelot

Wallonia has opened up vast swathes of its countryside to cyclists via the 1,400km (and growing) RAVeL path network.

Mostly on former railway lines and canal towpaths, RAVeL stands for Réseau Autonome des Voies Lentes (autonomous network of slow paths). In the Ardennes the system has a special value, giving access to a beautiful but otherwise impenetrable upland region to people on two wheels with flat trails that never have more than a 2% gradient.

RAVeL Spa-Stavelot is along the old Ligne 44A from 1867, connecting Spa to Gouvy in Belgian Luxembourg and shut down in 1974. The 22-kilometre route takes you through upland forest, granting distant views and passing directly above the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

15. Musée de la Lessive

Musée De La Lessive

This specialist museum on Park de 7 Heures is all about laundry, showing you how the washing got done before the days of electrical machines.

Presented over thousands of years, some of these methods are surprising in their ingenuity.

Each technological milestone is covered by documents, a reproduction or an antique appliance.

Many of the museum’s hand-operated 19th and early-20th-century machines are in working order, and a guide will give demonstrations.

There’s also an in-depth history of soaps and detergents and a chronology of the humble iron.

The museum is open every afternoon in July and August, weekends in April, May, June, September and October, and just on Sundays for the rest of the year.
