2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupé Review

The 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupé Blends Aggressive Style and Performance with a touch of Elegance. We put the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 powered coupe to the test.

bmw m6 gran tour

The BMW M6 makes a bold statement wherever it goes. The potent combination of its unique styling, breathtaking performance, and glorious rumble guarantee that you will always draw a crowd when behind the wheel, but hopefully, not the attention of a speed enforcement officer.

The Marino Blue exterior of our test vehicle is available as a no extra charge option on the M6, and is an exclusive colour for this special machine.   This striking paint colour does an exceptional job of enhancing the cars graceful lines and menacing curves, and the carbon fibre roof and aerodynamic aides announce the car’s sporting intentions with full effect.

2016-bmw-m6-coupe-review

It is this bold styling that helps set the M6 apart from its many rivals, but one must not forget that it is dynamic handling and well-rounded performance that helped BMW’s grand tourer establish itself as a benchmark in its category. There are three models available – coupe, cabriolet, and four-door Gran Coupe. The latter is the most usable as a daily driver or family hauler as its rear seats are roomy enough for two average adults and the additional doors make for efficient ingress and egress. The other two models offer rear seating, but it is best reserved for gym bags and other small items.

Performance: 2016 BMW M6 horsepower & 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine

The M6 sports the company’s mighty 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, a technological tour-de-force that produces a prodigious 560 horsepower and  500 lb.-ft. of tire searing torque. This is the same unit one finds in the company’s thunderous sport activity offerings, the X5M and X6M, as well as the iconic M5 sedan. However, this gem of a power plant is well-sorted and ultra-smooth, and due to its twin-turbo design, turbo lag is non-existent. In fact, the M6 will storm to 100 kilometres-per-hour from a standstill in a mere 4.1 seconds.

2016-bmw-m6-coupe-review

7-speed M dual-clutch Transmission

Shifting duties fall to a lightning quick 7-speed M dual-clutch unit that transitions up and down the gearbox with seamless precision, whether directed by the driver via paddle shifters, or left to make decisions on its own accord. It should be noted that the M6 is one of the few high-performance offerings on the market that can be still be ordered with a manual transmission should you wish to row your own gears, and this six-speed unit is available, like the Marino Blue paint, at no extra charge.

The car’s teardrop shape represents an evolution of the brand’ s long lineage of sporty GTs, hearkening back to the sexy CSLs of the 1960s and the pretty 6 Series cars of the late 1970s and 1980s. Its aerodynamic shape is enhanced by subtle spoilers, flares and bulges to give the car a more aggressive look, but it also helps to keep this exuberant performer planted to the road surface when driven near the limit.

Minor styling revisions have been made to both the front and rear fascias, the grille, and lighting units. LED lighting is now standard on all M6 models.

2016-bmw-m6-coupe-review

Competition Package: adds more horsepower

For those buyers who are looking to maximize the fun-factor and extract the most from the M6 there is a new Competition Package available that boosts engine power up to a potent 600 ponies and a host of other performance tweaks also come along for the ride – including an uprated suspension (stiffer springs, dampers, bushings, and anti-roll bars); sharper steering; and a more track friendly stability control system. Add to this unique 20-inch Double Spoke M alloy wheels and a sport exhaust system with black titanium tips.

Driving Dynamics: how does the M6 handle on the road?

On the road the M6 is happy to cruise along at almost any speed, and the driver’s cockpit has been optimized to ensure that all controls and switchgear are within easy reach of both hand and eye. The heavily side-bolstered sports seats will hold all but the slimmest body in place when driving the car near its limits, and due to what seems like infinite adjustability, this leather-clad throne proved comfortable enough for daily commutes and extended touring.

The car seems to be happiest at highway speeds and above, so one has to be very careful to monitor the car’s speedometer on a regular basis as the car is so smooth that you may endanger your license in short order. Luckily there is a heads-up display to broadcast your velocity on the windshield as a reminder, which also allows you to keep your eyes on the road ahead rather than glancing down at the clustre.

…this gem of a power plant is well-sorted and ultra-smooth, and due to its twin-turbo design, turbo lag is non-existent. In fact, the M6 will storm to 100 kilometres-per-hour from a standstill in a mere 4.1 seconds.

Steering is hydraulic and communicative, and it responds to driver inputs and corrections with lightning speed and surgical precision. Although the M6 has been engineered to deliver a high-performance driving experience, it is still a very heavy automobile. In fact, the M6 weighs in at well over two tonnes. However, its prodigious power and athletic handling prowess easily overcomes the added mass that comes along for the ride.

The well-sorted chassis and enormous Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires help keep this car stable and planted whether accelerating like a banshee or sharpening your cornering skills on a sinewy back country road. Add to this the ability to dial the car’s handling and performance parameters using BMW’s drive controls to select between Comfort, Sport, and Sport + settings. Of course the latest in stability and traction controls are also on board, as are enormous ABS- supported brakes.

Takeaway: is the 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupé worth it?

Fit-and-finish is exceptional inside and out, but that is expected in a car priced well into the six figures. While there are a wide array of automobiles available once you venture into this price category, few offer the curb appeal, luxury, and enthusiastic driving properties that the M6 possesses, and I for one have long been a fan.

  • Dynamic handling and invigorating M performance
  • Unique styling and gobs of curb appeal
  • Heavy for a performance offering
  • Limited rear passenger space in Coupe and Cabriolet

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Exceptionally powerful engine
  • slick automated manual transmission
  • richly trimmed and well-equipped interior
  • impressively supportive and comfortable front seats.
  • Costs significantly more than the M5 on which it's based
  • feels big and heavy around tight turns
  • modest rear-seat headroom and legroom by sedan standards.

The 2016 M6 Gran Coupe receives standard adaptive LED headlights with revised elements, and the options list gets some minor adjustments. The Competition package engine upgrade now produces even more power.

Edmunds says

If you're looking for an elite sport sedan with sleek styling, the 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is one of the best in the business, but its price may give you pause.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe 4dr Sedan (4.4L 8cyl Turbo 7AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.27 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

The best way to think of the 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is as the M5 sedan's wild-child sibling. Where the M5's profile embodies traditional Germanic restraint, the M6 Gran Coupe has slinky, muscular bodywork that's derived from the regular M6 coupe. The "Gran" in the name means it has an extra set of doors, so it's technically a sedan, nomenclature notwithstanding. But the low-slung driving position is straight out of the sport coupe playbook, and the rear quarters are also coupelike in their intimacy, though considerably roomier than the two-door M6's glorified cargo shelves.

Happily, this BMW shares the M5's laudable compliance in daily driving. If you set the adjustable suspension dampers to "Comfort," you've got a full-on luxury ride, aided by the Gran Coupe's M5-spec 116.7-inch wheelbase -- 4.5 inches longer than that of the M6 coupe. Of course, longer generally isn't better when it comes to handling tight turns, but even the two-door M6 can feel a bit unwieldy in close quarters. These cars are designed to cosset passengers in the city and devour miles on the open road. When you do come across some twisting tarmac, however, you'll likely be astounded by the M6 Gran Coupe's composed, responsive chassis and epic cornering grip.

As for the engine, it's epic in its own right. Carried over unchanged from M5 duty, the twin-turbocharged V8 pumps out 552 horsepower and catapults the Gran Coupe to 60 mph in about 4 seconds. Subjectively, it feels like an absolute monster at all speeds, augmented by a distinctive soundtrack that, as in the M5, includes some synthetic noises piped through the speakers. It's worth noting, however, that the 650i Gran Coupe rocks a twin-turbo V8, too, and you can have those keys for a lot less coin.

Ultimately, that's the question: Is the 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe worth the price? To take another in-house example, even the M5 is a relative bargain, as it gives you essentially the same performance and a more functional backseat at a 20 percent discount. But external rivals make this Bimmer look better. As awesome as the 2016 Audi RS 7 is in most respects, it's saddled with a conventional automatic transmission that's not as responsive as the Gran Coupe's automated manual, while the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG lacks the BMW's athleticism. Sure, the Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S are hard to top, but they're also much more expensive and not nearly as seductive-looking. If you want a four-door alpha performance car with an extra dose of style, the M6 Gran Coupe earns our recommendation.

Performance & mpg

The 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 552 hp and 502 pound-feet of torque. Opting for the Competition package raises output to 600 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.

A seven-speed automated manual transmission with shift paddles comes standard, though a six-speed conventional manual transmission is a no-cost option. All M6 Gran Coupes feature an automatic stop-start system that shuts down the engine when you're stopped to conserve fuel. Fortunately, you can turn it off if you don't like it.

BMW says the M6 Gran Coupe will sprint to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds with the automated manual.

EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 16 mpg combined (14 city/20 highway) with the automated manual and 17 mpg combined (15/22) with the conventional manual.

The 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, brake fade compensation, automatic brake drying and a hill-holder feature. It also comes with front side airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags, active front-seat head restraints, parking sensors and a rearview camera.

The Gran Coupe is additionally equipped with BMW Assist emergency telematics (including automatic crash notification and on-demand roadside assistance) and BMW Remote Services (including stolen-vehicle recovery, remote door unlocking and an integrated smartphone app).

The optional Driver Assistance Plus package bundles an active blind-spot monitor, a lane-departure warning system and a surround-view camera system with top-down and around-the-corner views.

The M6 Gran Coupe's turbo V8 imbues the car with an unbridled ferocity when you plant your right foot. The seemingly bottomless well of torque is available virtually from idle, and before you know it, you're hurtling toward redline atop a massive wave of thrust. No matter what gear you're in, there's serious power in reserve, and the dramatic exhaust note heightens the experience. Nonetheless, the V8 settles down nicely in normal driving, dropping only occasional hints as to its astounding capabilities.

We expect that most M6 Gran Coupe shoppers will sing the praises of the seven-speed automated manual transmission, which pairs the refinement of a regular automatic with the instantaneous execution of a racecar's gearbox. The conventional six-speed manual isn't particularly rewarding to operate, but it's still a welcome offering in this day and age, tempting old-school enthusiasts with full control over 552 horses. Thanks to its various engine, transmission, suspension and steering settings, the 2016 M6 Gran Coupe can be tailored to almost any driving scenario, providing well-insulated comfort on the daily commute and insane performance as conditions permit. It's a relatively bulky and heavy car, though, and consequently feels out of place on narrow winding roads.

The 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe's driver-centric layout is borrowed from the two-door M6, marking a clear departure from the M5's standard-issue 5 Series cabin. The central control panel arcs gracefully toward the driver seat, creating a cockpit-like cocoon that pairs nicely with the car's exuberant exterior. Materials are almost uniformly excellent, highlighted by extended leather trim and plentiful carbon-fiber accents. The distinctive headliner treatment pairs simulated suede with leather in a design that follows the contours of the carbon-fiber roof.

BMW's knob-based iDrive infotainment system handles entertainment, navigation and phone functions, as well as various vehicle settings, via a beautiful 10.2-inch central display. Processing times are swift, and the organization of the menus turns out to be pretty logical once you get acclimated. In our experience, though, iDrive typically takes a few more clicks and twists of the control knob to get what you want; some rival systems are easier to use.

Front seat occupants will revel in the remarkably supportive sport seats, which offer generous adjustments to accommodate a wide range of physiques. Rear outboard passengers fare better than they would in the two-door M6 coupe, but there's not as much space as they'd have in a conventional sedan like the M5. The rear center seating position is barely usable due to the M6 Gran Coupe's low roof line and extended center console.

The small, 12-cubic-foot trunk is indicative of a coupe rather than a sedan, but you do get standard split-folding rear seats for added utility.

2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe models

The 2016 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is visually distinguished from other 6 Series Gran Coupes by sporty elements like a carbon-fiber roof, unique front and rear fascias and quad tailpipes. It's offered in a single trim level.

Standard equipment includes 20-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, a limited-slip differential, automatic adaptive LED headlights, LED foglights and taillights, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, automatic soft-close doors, heated power-folding auto-dimming mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, four-zone automatic climate control, heated 16-way power front seats (with four-way lumbar support, adjustable bolsters and memory settings), leather upholstery, extended leather trim, a power-adjustable steering wheel, carbon-fiber accents and split-folding rear seatbacks.

Electronic features include Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, BMW's iDrive interface (with a 10.2-inch display), online services (including news and weather), smartphone-app integration, a rearview camera, voice controls, a navigation system with real-time traffic and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system with HD radio, satellite radio and USB/iPod integration. Also standard are driver-adjustable settings for the suspension, transmission, steering and engine.

The Executive package adds a heated steering wheel, a head-up display (also available separately), a power rear sunshade, manual rear side window shades, ventilated fatigue-reducing "active" front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. The Driver Assistance Plus package features a lane-departure warning system, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view camera system and a forward collision warning system with pedestrian detection.

Also optional is the Competition package (late availability) that delivers 48 additional horses for the V8 engine; lightweight alloy wheels; revised tuning for the suspension, steering and rear differential; retuned stability control that provides a higher threshold for intervention in the M Dynamic mode; and a black chrome finish for the tailpipes.

Stand-alone options include an alternative 20-inch wheel design in silver or black, carbon-ceramic brakes, a synthetic-suede headliner and an infrared night-vision system with pedestrian detection.

2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe

Auto Value and Bumper to Bumper

The Gran Coupe rides on the same 116.7-inch wheelbase as the M5 sedan, which is 4½-inches longer than the M6 Coupe. Standard wheels are 20-inch M light alloys. Our test cars Frozen Silver paint will cost you 5-grand extra, but it really looks unique, and you can also upgrade to full LED headlights with the Executive Package.

So in a nutshell, the M6 Gran Coupe is an M5 with a few more curves, and when it comes to hitting some curves, the GC quickly established itself as more than capable.

M engineers put their hands on every aspect of the chassis, transforming it by directly bolting the rear axle subframe to the body for greater stiffness, adding M Dynamic Damper Control shocks, and of course tweaking the electronics, which we still found very intrusive unless they were turned all the way off. Much like the M6, it’s not a lightweight, coming in at over 44-hundred pounds, yet it manages to feel much lighter through the cones with way more quickness than expected in a car this big, all while providing good amounts of feedback.

bmw m6 gran tour

While there’s no shortage of torque off the line, traction can be in short supply. Using M’s launch control helps, but after a few max launches it needs a time out so you’re on your own. Power pours on constantly throughout the trip, with shifts only a minor blip on your high speed radar.

The M-specific brakes are already a step above standard Gran Coupe fare, but you can upgrade further to M Carbon Ceramic brakes.  Our test car had them and brought us to a halt in a short average of 114-feet from 60.

bmw m6 gran tour

And even with all its performance credentials, driving the M6 Gran Coupe is relatively tranquil and relaxing almost regardless of speed. Comfort mode seems more comforting than in the M5, but things can still get plenty aggressive when you dial it up to Sport Plus.

Government Fuel Economy Ratings are in the Gas Guzzler realm at 14-City, 20-Highway, and 16-Combined, which we came close to matching at 16.4 miles-per-gallon of Premium.

When it comes to pricing, numbers pop from low to high, as you’ll need $115,925 to enter the world of M6 Gran Coupedom.

At that level, the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe is clearly one exclusive high performance ride. Still, for the money, we prefer the more traditional M5. But, if you’d rather have the slick M6 looks, but retain some 4-door practicality, then you won’t be disappointed with the M6 Gran Coupe. It’s ready to rock and roll when you are.

This is the BMW M6 Gran Coupe

EC935918-54E4-46F0-8A0E-1183893AF4AC_1.jpg

Last month, BMW teased a shady, sinister-looking M-Power version of its 6-Series Gran Coupe. Today, it has given us both barrels straight to the chest. Internet: meet the M6 Gran Coupe.

As we suspected, it sports very similar firepower to its ‘standard' BMW M5 and M6 brethren. And by very similar, we mean identical: underneath that rather lovely body sits a 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine developing 552bhp and 502lb ft of torque.

As such, it will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds - exactly the same as the M6 Coupe and 0.1s quicker than the M5 - and run on to a limited top speed of 155mph. If you so wish - and you live in Germany or own substantial acres of awesomely paved, straight runway - you can have the limiter set to 189mph with the M Driver's pack.

That power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed double clutch M gearbox, featuring Launch Control (which is ace), and something called low speed assistance. We doubt with 552 horses under the bonnet, this will ever be an issue.

There's an electronic limited-slip diff at the back in collusion with the DSC stability control, both of which distribute the engine's power to give you maximum traction when a sudden burst of B-road rage descends. There's also a hydraulic steering rack (surely a good thing), optional carbon ceramic brakes, and dynamic damper control to better tailor the chassis.

Outside, it's familiar M fare, with those large air intakes sitting underneath the M kidney grille, flared wheelarches - pointing to a wider track both front and rear for the M6 Gran Coupe - 20in alloys, a new rear apron and of course, M-Power's favoured quartet of exhaust pipes at the back. Oh, and that rear apron incorporates a CFRP diffuser too, helping direct the airflow underneath the Gran Coupe.

It costs €128,000 in Germany, which is around £103,000, which is around £10k more than a BMW M6 Coupe. Do you, as BMW implores, agree that it brings "luxury and aesthetic appeal" to the M6 range? Tell us below.
