Tours to Cyprus

The essence of cyprus.

With assets as varied as the visitors they attract, this welcoming island has ski-slope mountains and sun-soaked shores, classical ruins and cosmopolitan resorts, historic harbours and modern marinas, and two distinct cultures in its divided capital.

Why choose a tour in Cyprus?

This beautiful island has been beguiling visitors for centuries, but its politically strategic position also invited invaders. Roman and Persian, Ottoman and Venetian empires, along with Crusader campaigns, all left their legacy on the landscape of Cyprus; the country’s most recent incursion, the 1974 Turkish invasion, splitting the island and leaving Nicosia as ‘the world’s last divided capital’.

In the Turkish-occupied north, Kyrenia’s castle dominates the harbour, and St Barnabas Monastery is now a museum of icons and artefacts; while, in the hills behind the city, Bellapais village, lauded by Lawrence Durrell, is little changed since he lived there in the 1950s, its abbey ruins steeped in an air of serenity.

Famagusta, a ghost town since 1974, has re-opened to visitors, its medieval citadel surrounded by sturdy fortress walls, its historic St. Nicholas Cathedral now a mosque. Nearby, overlooking the sea, the ancient city of Salamis dates back to the 11 th century BC, with an amphitheatre, statuary, and colonnades.

North meets south in the narrow streets of Nicosia, Lefkosia the city’s Cypriot name. With mosques, museums and medieval churches on both sides of the capital’s divide, landmarks within the Venetian Walls range from the minarets and mosaic domes of 13 th -century St. Sophia Cathedral to caravanserai courtyards, the Whirling Dervish Museum, and 1930s British ‘Covered Bazaar’.

The peaceful Troodos Mountains are sprinkled with picturesque villages and Byzantine churches, where Kikkos Monastery sits atop a high peak, and houses the ‘miraculous’ icon of the Virgin Mary.

A sea-view hilltop is the site of ancient Curium (Kourion), inhabited as a Greek, Roman and Christian town right up to the early Middle Ages, with relics of each era in its theatre, arches, and frescoes. On the shore below, Aphrodite’s Rock marks the mythical birthplace of the goddess of love; and to the west, Paphos reveals its past with 2 nd -century BC catacombs, and splendid mosaics of the House of Dionysus.

Medieval meets modern in Larnaca and Limassol, the former teaming a palm-lined promenade with a cobbled streets and arcaded squares; the latter linking labyrinthine lanes with legends of Richard the Lionheart, a seafront park by its 7km beach, and ‘the Med’s most modern marina’ adjoining the Old Port.

Cyprus is also teamed with Israel on a luxury cruise, combining the island’s medieval sites with highlights of the Holy Land, from biblical Cana and Capernaum to Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth, the Crusader city of Acre, the Sea of Galilee, and the salt-dense Dead Sea.

When to go on Cyprus holidays

Coolest in the mountains, warmest on the south coast, Cyprus has long, hot, dry summers stretching from mid-May to mid-October, bookended by brief spring and autumn seasons. Winters, apart from the snow-capped heights of Troodos, are generally a comfortably cool 13-17°. Summer temperatures hover around 30-34° but can peak nearer 40°; the shoulder months (March-April and late-October - November) average a balmy 25°, glorious for touring, when the sites are usually quieter.

Who are Cyprus tours suited to?

From cosmopolitan Limassol to awe-inspiring ancient ruins, intriguing medieval monuments, soft sand beaches, and hidden villages in herb-scented hills, the ‘Island of Aphrodite’ is as welcoming as it is warm, and blends a wealth of history with mythology and modernity; so it certainly ticks the boxes for a broad range of interests, often all in one day.

Singles, couples and friends will enjoy the variety of aspects and attractions on our small-group tours, and Jules Verne offers ‘ No Single Supplement ’ dates and exclusively Solo departures for single travellers.

Why book Cyprus tours with Jules Verne?

With 45 years’ experience and a passion for creating extraordinary adventures, Jules Verne takes you to iconic landmarks and lesser-known sites, with expert tour guides who share their local knowledge, and show you hidden gems. Leisurely interludes on our journeys in Cyprus include a lunch by the beach in Famagusta, dinner in idyllic Bellapais, and time for you to enjoy the island’s ubiquitous tavernas and delicious food.

All our guided tours to Cyprus are ABTA and ATOL protected, and we offer a 100% price guarantee, so you can book with complete confidence.

Welcome to the best-kept secret of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Not all that long ago, Cyprus was a place you’d think twice before traveling to. But although this island country remains divided after a military coup in 1974, the beauty of the land and the hospitality of the people stand unfettered as the country edges towards unification. The south is well-established in tourism, but the Turkish -controlled northern part combines adventure, local interaction, history and cultural immersion with an understated flair rarely found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Learn more about Cyprus

Local culture of cyprus.

Cypriots are generally known for their warmly, hospitable quality, and the high value they place on family. There are really two kinds of Cypriots though: Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, since Cyprus is divided in two. Greek Cypriots are the Greek-speaking Greek Orthodox community; they occupy the south. Turkish Cypriots are the Turkish-speaking Muslim community, who occupy the northern part of the country (roughly a third of it).

Before the 1974 military coup and the subsequent split of the island, the two groups were largely mixed. Their cultures were more intertwined. Nowadays, however, with the island formally divided, there is more of a cultural divide. There are still many signs of cultural harmony, though. One need only look at the Home for Cooperation, a community centre and NGO hub located in the Green Line (the UN Buffer Zone between north and south) to see signs of hope for unification. Indeed the reopening of border points in 2003, allowing domestic travel between north and south, was a step forward.

While southern Cyprus has seen rapid tourism growth and environmental degradation, tourism in the north is growing at a much slower rate. The Republic of Northern Cyprus (formally recognized only by Turkey) is characterized by a Turkish–Cypriot dialect, warm hospitality and friendliness, and Islam (though its practice is not as overt as in many other Muslim countries). The culture of northern Cyprus is strongly influenced by Turkey, but Turkish Cypriots consider themselves Cypriot first and foremost.

Geography & environment

Located in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus is an island that lies west off the coast of Lebanon and Syria, north of Israel and Egypt, and south of Turkey. At 9,250 square kilometres in size, it’s relatively small. Cyprus is essentially split in two: the northern part of the country (roughly one-third of the land mass) is controlled by Turkey, and has been ever since the coup of 1974. The lower two-thirds of the country is occupied by Greek Cypriots.

Northern Cyprus boasts a diverse and scenic land mass of beaches, mountains and sweeping plains. The Kyrenia Range is a major geographic feature of the north, and its highest peak is Mt Selvili (1,023 m). East of this mountain range, there is a peninsula called Karpas, where the quiet town of Rizokarpaso and various beaches are found. The holiday towns of Kyrenia and Famagusta lie in the north and east of the main land mass, respectively.

Shopping guide to Cyprus

Cyprus is a fantastic place to shop for locally produced items, from handcrafted textiles to fresh fruit and vegetables. Perhaps the most tempting souvenir in Cyprus is a kilim – an Ottoman style rug woven by hand. There’s also some wonderful Turkish pottery, silk, scarves and tiles to be found.

Lefkara embroidery is a uniquely Cypriot item, originating in the village of the same name in the south; northern versions of Lefkara embroidery have a slightly different aesthetic. North Nicosia is a great place to shop for handmade lace like this, as well as baskets which are handmade in island’s more remote villages. Often rugs and baskets are not cheap, and it pays to shop around a little before you buy.

Thanks to the strength of Cypriot farming communities, market-fresh local produce is never too far away in Cyprus. Start with Nicosia’s markets – both the ‘open’ and ‘closed’ markets are worth a good stroll around, and great for local interaction.

Cyprus festival calendar

The Cypriots are a festive bunch, which shows in their jam-packed calendar. The Limassol Carnival is a major event in the south – it’s one of the best-known carnivals in Europe. In the north of Cyprus, food is a major theme of the festival calendar, with an event to celebrate just about any Cypriot food imaginable: the orange, grape, lemon, date, tulip and walnut, just to name a few. Famagusta, meanwhile, has a reputation for regular music festivals.

North Cyprus Olive Festival, Kyrenia (October)

It started in 2001 and before too long grew to attract visiting artists from many neighboring countries. Olives are certainly not the only focus; dance performances, market stalls and seminars have all been known to feature in this multi-day affair.

International Famagusta Art & Culture Festival (June/July)

Spanning hip hop, reggae, pop and classical, this 20+ year-old event has steadily grown into one of the most significant music festivals of the Mediterranean. With a strong world music bent, it’s a great place to experience just how much more there is to the region than sun, surf and sand.

Eco Festival, Buyyokonuk (October)

For many years the village of Buyokkonuk has been a bastion of sustainable tourism and all things local, and this late-summer festival is a place to taste Cypriot food done the slow, proper way. While the cuisine is the main focus, music and market stalls feature among the festivities.

Food and drink in Cyprus

The cuisine of Turkish Cypriots comes from Mediterranean, Southern European and Middle Eastern influences. The beauty of eating in Northern Cyprus is that ingredients tend to be local, as food production is more agrarian in the north than in the south.

Must-try food and drink in Cyprus

Meze is a major pillar of Cypriot food culture, in the same way tapas is to the Spaniards. It’s the share-plate style of eating, the perfect accompaniment to a few drinks with friends. Meze dishes might include hummus, beetroot, yoghurt, grilled halloumi, spicy pastourma (cured sausage), koupepia or dolma (stuffed vine leaves) … the list goes on.

2. Halloumi

Is it Greek, or is it Turkish? No matter where you stand on the debate on its origins, this rich brined cheese is one of the must-eat foods in Cyprus. If it’s grilled (it usually is) it’s best consumed within minutes of it being served, preferably with copious lemon juice.

3. Molihiya

A spinach-like dish often seen in Northern Cyprus, Molihiya is perhaps of Arabic origin. It uses sun-dried Molihiya leaves which have a distinct and potent flavor. Garlic, lemon, tomato and chilli are incorporated, and often chicken is too.

4. Cicek dolmasi

Another beloved Turkish-Cypriot dish, these zesty and spicy parcels are squash blossoms (or zucchini flowers) stuffed with a mixture of rice, onions, tomatoes and herbs.

To call it the local ‘firewater’ may be a little harsh – the Cypriot drink of choice certainly has a character of its own, though colourless and sugarless. It’s distilled from grapes but has a subtle raisin aroma, and is as refreshing in the summer (served cold) as it is heart-warming in the winter.

Ayran is a savory yogurt-based beverage that is mixed with salt and served cold. Though filling, it’s quite refreshing and a great option for those who don’t drink alcohol. To get the full authentic dose, go for one with some dried mint in it.

7. şeftali kebabı

Pronounced Sheftalia Kebab is a traditional Cypriot food. It is a type of sausage without skin, that uses caul fat, or omentum, the membrane that surrounds the stomach of lamb, to wrap the ingredients rather than sausage casing, thus ensuring a very juicy kebab

Is tipping customary in Cyprus?

Tipping is not expected in most situations in Cyprus, but it’s often appreciated. In restaurants, however, tipping is quite common. Servers will often add a 10% service charge to a bill; if they don’t, a similar amount is often expected as a tip.

What is the internet access like in Cyprus?

Reliable internet access is increasingly common in Cyprus, especially in the major towns. Internet cafes tend to be more prevalent in the north. Wi-Fi is free in many hotels and cafes in both the north and south. Internet access will be more scarce in remote and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Cyprus?

International roaming is possible in Cyprus in the South.  For European travelers, as of 2017 this will no longer incur a fee. Traveling in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus roaming may not be available and if so it may be expensive, better to check with your provider before traveling. If you’re staying for longer than a few days, inexpensive SIM cards with data are easy to purchase.

What are the toilets like in Cyprus?

Toilets in Cyprus block easily when paper goes into them, hence the separate wastebaskets you’ll see for paper disposal. This is the norm throughout Cyprus.

Can I drink the water in Cyprus?

The tap water in the south of Cyprus is fine to drink, but in the north it’s best to stick to filtered (or, when it’s the only option, bottled) water. The high mineral content can upset your stomach if you’re not used to it.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cyprus?

Most major credit cards are widely accepted in Cyprus. Dinners and Amex may not be accepted.

What is ATM access like in Cyprus?

ATMs are widely available in Cyprus. However, it’s best to carry ample cash with you if you’re travelling to more remote areas in the north.

Is Cyprus a safe destination for LGBTQI-travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in Cyprus, and the country is quite a popular destination among gay travelers. In the north, however, homosexuality was only decriminalized as recently as 2010. LGBTQI travelers should exercise caution when traveling, and be aware that conservative attitudes may still prevail in many areas.

Cyprus tours

Cyprus tours

Travel and visa requirements.

Cyprus is mythical, mountainous and sometimes misunderstood, with its reputation for parties and package tours. However, you only need to take a few steps away from its resort towns to embark on a journey into a landscape that was blessed by ancient Greek gods, and still feels otherworldly. On our Cyprus tours, explore the Troodos Mountains , the island’s largest range, a landscape peppered with juniper, ancient olive and black pine trees, snow-capped peaks and coastal joys such as the Akamas Peninsula .

The word ‘Cyprus’ comes from the Greek word for copper, as it was mined here as far back as the Bronze Age. It’s a perfect name for Cyprus, however, as one of the qualities of copper is that it’s a great conductor of heat and electricity. Not only are you walking in pleasant heat between March and October, the buzz you get from the likes of Madari Mountain or the Artemis and Adonis Trails is always electric.

I love my  work and I would like to show you the island in most professional way. I ...

An island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is both surrounded by other countries’ influence and distinctly its’ own. With an air of Greece’s European flair, the island’s close proximity to Asia and Africa brings an element of exoticism; this medley creates a definitive personality of intrigue and excitement scarcely found in other destinations. Busy, tourist-ridden cities hold an obvious draw of sunshine and built-up hotels. Any Cyprus tour guide would say the nation’s real heartbeat lies in the less-altered, smaller villages; where citrus groves and medieval castles lay with provincial charm. Nearby, honey colored sand and dazzling beaches wait in untouched glory. Regardless of where you journey, take a break with house made Cypriot wine. Known as Commandaria, it is as sweet as it is strong. Dine on culinary specialties of tahini or Halloumi cheese, before shopping for intricate lacework from a Cyprus village or local-made leather goods. This floating country is a wealth of beauty, both in their landscape and their crafts, leaving tourists in love with the serene breeze and shimmering sun-ridden shores.

The Treasures of Cyprus Tour

The Treasures of Cyprus

Cyprus is an amazing country and I was glad I was able to visit it. Booking the tour through Tourradar was quite easy and even though I had not heard of Cyprus Incoming Tour before, I booked this tour because of Tourradar. Overall, the tour was good and our group had 8 people with half of them from Spain. So, the tour guide, George, explained everything in both Spanish and English. I was impressed with all the sites, especially the occupied Northern Cyprus, which was eye-opening to see the tension and see all the occupying forces. I gave the tour 4 stars instead of 5 stars because there were a few issues, which could be improved in future offerings of this tour. First, another tour member and I who booked this tour through Tourradar were booked for only 5 nights at the Best Western Plus hotel in Laranaca even though the tour itinerary clearly said the tour included 7 night hotel accommodation. When I checked in at the hotel, the hotel reception staff said the reservation was only for 5 nights and didn't know what would happen for the remaining 2 nights. I messaged Cyprus Incoming through Tourradar and they promptly acknowledged the mistake, and said they would resolve it. I didn't know Cyprus Incoming had subcontracted the tour to another company called OLTA Travel, which had to correct the issue. In the meantime, when I checked with the hotel staff 2 days later, one of the staff at the front desk was very abrupt and said the reservation was only for 5 nights and there were no rooms available for the remaining 2 nights. This caused a lot of anxiety and concern, but eventually the hotel accommodation was extended for 7 nights. There were 2 other members of the tour group, who were booked in another hotel 25 kms away, which delayed the tour each day by half hour or more as the tour bus had to pick them up first and then drive to our hotel. So, the hotel accommodation issue must be resolved in future tours, and those who book the tours must be clearly informed that Cyprus Incoming organizes the tour through OLTA Travel. Best Western Plus is a good hotel but its location in the middle of a residential area instead of near the city center was not ideal. One had to walk at least 15 to 20 minutes to get to the city center. Second, the tour guide George was good but if he emails or uses Whatsapp as other tour companies do to inform the tour group what the next day's itinerary would be, what to bring, what to wear (as some in the group couldn't enter a famous mosque because they were wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts), lunch is included or not, approximately at what time we would return back to the hotel, etc., it would be very helpful. Some tour group members get nauseated on long bus rides and so including information on how long the ride before a stop would be very helpful. Also, a brief overview of the country on the first day will help the group orient itself to the tour better. Third, if the lunch duration is shortened and the time is used for seeing more sites, it would be great as some of us may not return again to the same country to see one or two important places. I really wanted to see the mosaics in Paphos but we didn't as we spent nearly 2 hours at lunch. Fourth, we had a leisure day but there were no recommendations on what we could see on our own, how to get the transportation, etc. It would have been nice to be given a list of options not covered by the tour itinerary. Overall, the tour was good and Cyprus is a wonderful country to visit. It has a lot of history, interesting sites to visit, beautiful beaches to enjoy, and if the mentioned issues could be addressed, this tour would be excellent.

Hello, Tour guides were great. You need to communicate more with travellers especially around holidays. Due to Christmas, you changed the itinerary to have 3 days free time Dec 24-26 and I only found out because I asked on Dec 23. This should have been published on your website in advance. If I had known in advance, I would have made a different plan. I was the only person on the tour so contacting me would be easy. I also think 1 activity of wine tasting in Larnaca did not happen. Have a great day.

Dear Friends

The meeting point for  all  trips with a bus is the TC checkpoint after the Ledra Palace Hotel.

The meeting point for the Nicosia walks remains always the Greek Cypriot Checkpoint at the end of Ledra Street

Join me on a walk in history and time throughout my island

Cyprus has a rich and varied history with plenty of archaeological ruins, byzantine churches and monasteries, crusader castles and palaces, not to mention its more modern history of invasion and division.

To me however it is one island, the island where I was born and raised and to which I have devoted most of my working life as an archaeologist and art historian to bring to a wider audience its many beautiful sights.

My web site can offer you excursions and walks with a historical but also contemporary insight into places of interest and subject matters of special significance on both sides of the dividing line.

Discovering Nicosia

Discovering Nicosia

An amazing city, from the Bronze Age to the present day. A capital since the 12th century A.D built on layers of culture and tradition both from East and West, from both France and Jerusalem. A medieval city encircled by a unique fortification system, stemming out of la citta ideale of the Renaissance. Walking in Nicosia is encountering the past and understanding the present! We will walk through the dividing line and try to visualize, understand and appreciate the beauty of our capital in its entity.

Discovering Famagusta

Discovering Famagusta

The Key and the Heart of Cyprus , the hub of the Mediterranean, the port that merged East and West, where the spice routes met the silk roads, where pilgrims and merchants met Kings, knights and crusaders; where Greek, French, Armenian, Genoese, Venetian, Jewish, Syrian, Catalan, Pisan, Turkish and Arab merchants lived side by side, each in their own quarter, celebrating within their own traditions, their own religious building. A city adorned with 365 churches, one for everyday of the year. A city, or rather a living museum.

Discovering the origins of Famagusta: Enkomi and Salamis and the Monastery of St.Barnabas

Discovering the origins of Famagusta: Enkomi and Salamis and the Monastery of Barnabas

Two of the most important sites of ancient Cyprus and a monastery of particular importance to the history of the church of Cyprus.

Enkomi was the Bronze Age city and port from where copper was exported to many parts of the ancient world; Salamis, the continuation of Enkomi is the living memory of the arrival of the Greeks in Cyprus after the Trojan War; a Greek city par excellence that flourished during antiquity, under the Persians, the Assyrians, the Ptolemies as Arsinoe, the Romans, the Byzantines as Constantia. Royal tombs with rich burials such as those described by Homer in the Iliad , a Roman theatre, a Gymnasium, baths and two of the most important basilicas of Cyprus...An amazing and enriching experience in ancient and byzantine history not only of Cyprus but of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Discovering Soli and the Palace of Vouni

Discovering Soli and the Palace of Vouni

The palace of Vouni and the Basilica of Soli: Where the city kingdoms of ancient Cyprus met Persian rule. Two ancient sites with a rich history, a palace probably in the most beautiful spot of the island, two kingdoms enriched through copper trade and the presence of Greek classical tradition. The palace of Vouni is a stunning monument to visit, a particular moment of Cypriot history where Greek influence takes over oriental building habits. The Basilica of Soli, recently restored is a testimony of the deep roots that Christianity has in the island.

Saint Hilarion Castle

Saint Hilarion Castle

Perched high up on two peaks of the Pentadactylos range, this original byzantine lookout post was transformed into a royal castle of the 13th century by the French Lusignan princes. A magnificent location with views both towards the sea and the plain, it is an exceptional monument of gothic architecture and nature.

The ruined Castle of St. Hilarion is a particularly interesting and perhaps unique example of a «chateau fort», built as a royal residence, and completely abandoned since the close of the middle ages. Such a monument illustrating the mode of life of medieval royalty, untouched by subsequent alterations, would be difficult to find in Europe. Here we have the most interesting of souvenirs of the once famous Royal House of Cyprus and Jerusalem.

George Jeffery. A description of the Historic Monuments of Cyprus. Nicosia 1918

Bellapais Abbey

bellapais

An exclusive European gothic abbey, originally used by the Augustinian order and then by the Cistercian order. A beautiful building of the 14th century unique in Cyprus, much in line with abbeys found in Spain and Italy.

Buffavento Castle

Buffavento Castle

Probably the castle that offers the most breathtaking views of the island, perched high upon a windy mountain, a look-out post first by the Byzantines transformed later into a castle by the Lusignan kings so as to protect both the capital and the shores from intruders. The castle is halfway between St. Hilarion and Kantara, at the summit of a crest in the Pentadactylos range.

In this castle, a watch was kept every night and as soon as they descried ships at sea they forthwith lit beacon fires or torches to pass the news to the city of Nicosia and to Kyrenia Castle .

Father Stephen Lusignan, Description ou histoire de Cypre , Paris 1580

Monastery of Panagia Apsinthiotissa

panagia apsinthiotissa

About a mile north of the village of Sykhari, are the remais of the Monastery of Panagia Apsinthiotissa, property of the Orthodox Sea of Jerusalem, and known during the medieval period as the Abbey of the Abscithi. A Byzantine church restored by the Lusignans in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Fragments of wall paintings are seen in the church.

Kantara Castle

Kantara Castle

After the Arab raids of the 6th and the 7th centuries A.D the Byzantines first fortified the peak of the mountain, to be followed by the Lusignans, who embellished and strengthened the fortifications so as to protect Famagusta and the important and rich peninsula of the Karpas; The French royal family of the Lusignans used the palace during the hot summer months.

The superb Castle of Kantara, the Hundred Chambers, which, seeming to hang in mid-air, dominates this end of Cyprus has been often visited and described. Buffavento stands higher, and St Hilarion can show more perfect ramparts and turrets, but neither recalls so strangely a forgotten age, neither seems to be so thickly peopled with its ghosts, as this lovely ruin on its pillar of rock. No painter’ s wildest fancy has pictured anything so fantastic as these Cyprian Castles, and standing at the foot of the last steep leading to the gate of Kantara, and involuntarily recalling the fairy towers of romance, the traveller might imagine in the stronghold of a Sleeping Beauty, untouched by change or time for a thousand years .

George Jeffery. A description of the Historic Monuments of Cyprus. Nicosia 1918.

Monastery of Panagia Tochniou

monastery of panagia tochniou

An interesting monastery of the 14th century, where byzantine art persists and blends with medieval forms. Fragments of wall paintings are found in the dome and the apse of the church.

The Castle of Kyrenia

kyrenia castle

One of our most beautiful and best preserved castles built by the Lusignans on the sea front. An amazing and robust construction entirely out of limestone from the nearby quarries of the Kyrenia range. The castle has an interior court yard, a little chapel dedicated to St. George and houses today the original shipwreck of the Kyrenia ship that sailed in the 3rd century BC from Samos to Cyprus with a rich cargo of wine amphorae and stone mills. The ship sunk a few miles out of the little town of Kyrenia; marine archaeologists and scientists studied the shipwreck for years and managed to preserve the hull which today is exhibtied in one of the rooms of the castle.

Antiphonitis Church

antiphonitis church

A most important wall-painted church, both through its structure and its iconograpy, situated in a beautiful setting of pines and cypresses of the Pentadactylos range. The church is a single aisled building with a large dome dating to the 12th century AD. It is a monument of extreme beauty and elegance, unique in its kind. The wall paintings date from the 12th and the 15th century.

Towards the west

toward the west img1

A days trip into the western part of the island, to visit the Monastery of St. George Rigatis next to Kyra village, and the Maronite Monastery of Prophetes Elias in Skylloura

Unknown Cyprus

unknown cyprus img1

We will visit a cave in Platani in the Mesaoria plain, we will use the crossing of Lefconico to cross to the coastal road. We will see Panagia Pergaminiotissa from the outside and will then proceed towards the peninsula of the Karpas, go through Komi Kebir and visit the newly restaured church of Ayios Auxentios, and Panagia Kyra in the village of Livadia. An amazing church and very important church in the history of art of Byzantine Cyprus. We will make a break for a coffee in Koma tou Yialou, visit the strange chapel of Ayia Solomoni and proceed to Lythrangomi to visit Panagia Kanakaria

What to Expect

This is a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy and requires participants to be in good health and able to keep up with the group without assistance from tour staff. To make the most of what each locale has to offer, shore excursions will be active, and you will often be spending much of the day off the ship. These adventure-filled days will be offset by relaxing time spent cruising at sea, with the opportunity to enjoy the ship’s amenities and the full lecture program. Travel on land will be by modern air-conditioned motorcoach, with most drives lasting under an hour at a time (except for our drive to see Geirangerfjord which takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. Daily activities can involve up to two miles of walking, often over unpaved paths, grassy areas, and uneven terrain where stairs are unavailable or do not have handrails. If you rely on a cane or walker, you may not be able to visit all sites on the program. Many historic buildings do not have elevators. Excursions will also involve standing, often in the warm sun. On board the Exploris One , an elevator connects all passenger decks. The ship does not have facilities for wheelchair-dependent passengers; there is no wheelchair-accessible cabin nor chair lift on board. Aboard ship, you should feel comfortable walking on a rocking surface at times. You will need to climb into and out of Zodiac inflatable tenders for some shore excursions (staff and crew will be on hand to assist). You do not have to participate in all scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination.
