Riu Palace Tropical Bay: The Stunning Beach Resort for Your Next Holiday in Negril Jamaica

The Riu Palace Tropical Bay was my first all-inclusive resort experience.

Update: April 2019. Please note that the Riu Palace Tropical Bay was renovated in Fall 2018 and appears differently than it did back in 2015 during my stay.

I travel a lot, but travel does not necessarily mean vacation. Bouncing around from place to place and taking in all of the sights isn’t always the most relaxing holiday. After plenty of traveling, I came to Jamaica to have a relaxing vacation. Negril is best known for its beautiful beaches and the bright sunshine. I was in desperate need of both.

Riu Palace Tropical Bay

I visited the resort with my best friend, Shannon and her mom, Diana. It was purely a girls getaway this time around. My first impressions of the Riu Palace Tropical Bay were fantastic. The basics were all there. Luxurious swimming pools? Check. Beautiful beach? Check. Abundance of slushy alcoholic beverages? Check. But, how did the Riu Palace Tropical Bay stack up? Would I enjoy the all-inclusive experience? Here’s my full Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay review.

What was included?

At the Riu Palace Negril, the phrase “all-inclusive” here really did mean all-inclusive. All meals, drinks, entertainment, WiFi, sports, and on-site activities were included in the stay. Other than tipping the staff (which I highly recommend that you do), you don’t have to pay anything extra than the price of the package vacation. It’s a good feeling to not have to worry about carrying around a wallet or having to pay for anything while you’re there. The included meals varied from buffet food to three-course meals at the restaurants in the evening. The drinks included local and imported beverages of all varieties.

Riu Palace Tropical Bay Negril included one main building with the lobby and some restaurants, two buffets that alternated meal service times, a stage, two swimming pools (one with a swim-up bar), and several buildings filled with guest rooms. Bloody Bay Beach was merely steps from the swimming pools. It might seem like a large resort, but it didn’t take long to circle the whole place. I liked that it wasn’t a huge resort where it was necessary to take a shuttle from one spot to the next.

At the Riu Tropical Bay, there were beautiful flowers and plants all around. We could always see workers maintaining the property on a daily basis. There were pretty gardens, gazebos, cascading water, lush greenery, and hibiscus flowers in full bloom. The bright pink buildings offered a tropical vibe. As soon as I arrived, I immediately felt like I was on a vacation.

The Swimming Pools

I spent most of my days at the swimming pools of the Riu Palace Tropical Bay Jamaica. The water in the pools was always perfectly warm, heated by the sun. The pools were never crowded, and it was always so easy to find a free lounger. We visited at the beginning of November, which was an off-peak time to visit.

The more popular of the two had a swim-up bar. There were all sorts of drinks there: beer, hard alcohol, and slushy drinks. There were machines with pina coladas and strawberry margaritas ready to go. However, the bartenders will create your drink of choice using blenders. Shannon and I discovered our favorite drinks partway through the trip. Be sure to try a “Purple Rain” while you’re there. It was delicious. “Caribbean Orange” was another delicious beverage. I also sampled some of the special drinks of the day.

In the other pool, the staff members set up a volleyball net. We also attended a short water aerobics class in the pool one day. There were always games and activities by the pool, hosted by the entertainment staff. There was never a dull moment, though you could also seek relaxation and quiet. I spent hours laying on a lounger by the pool, reading a book. There were some loungers inside the pool, perfect for keeping cool. When I wanted a change of scenery, I took a dip in the sea. What a luxurious life!

A beautiful beach at a resort might be equally, if not more important, than a quality swimming pool. I can state, with confidence, that Bloody Bay Jamaica was one of the prettiest beaches I’ve ever seen. From the twinkling blue waters to the powdery white sand, every image of that perfect beach that comes to mind was right there before my eyes.

The sea water was equally as warm as the swimming pool water. Towering palms offered reprieve from the sun. The water was shallow and clear. I saw a starfish at the bottom once, and there were rumors that another guest saw a stingray. This section of Bloody Bay Beach was also private, only open to guests of the resort. I was rarely approached by anyone selling any wares or tours while relaxing on the beach.

Entrance to Bloody Bay Jamaica from the Riu Palace Tropical Bay Negril

There were four restaurants at the Riu Palace Tropical Bay: Rimini (Italian restaurant), Krystal (Fusion restaurant), Hakuchi (Japanese restaurant), and Bloody Bay (grill and steakhouse). I ate at every restaurant, except the steakhouse. For dinner in the restaurant, you must make a reservation for the following evening.

Vegan food at the Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay Resort in Negril

For vegetarians, there was a separate vegetarian menu that was the same for all four restaurants. However, whether you could order a particular meal or not depended on the kitchen for that restaurant being open. The restaurants worked on a rotation as to whether or not they were open. This may have been due to a reduced amount of guests because it was their off-season.

With that said, there were a few items on the vegetarian menu that were vegan (or could be made vegan). Otherwise, the staff were more than happy to prepare a vegan meal for me. As a vegan at this resort, I did not go hungry. Read more about what I ate as a vegan at the Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay.

Drinks at the Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay Negril

For breakfast and lunch (and dinner on a couple of occasions), we dined at the buffets. There was always an abundance of fresh fruit and salad, and I managed to find some other dishes that were vegan. If in doubt about any of the ingredients due to allergies or diet restrictions, be sure to ask the chef. He’ll be able to go into more detail about the ingredients that were used in a particular dish.

Friends at the Hotel Riu Palace Negril Jamaica

I stayed in room 4317 of the Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay Jamaica, on the top floor (third floor). When I entered the room for the first time, I’m pretty sure that my jaw hit the ground. From floor to ceiling, this suite oozed luxury. There was a large king-sized bed facing a flat screen TV with premium cable channels. The room included a sitting area with a couch and a chair. The areas of the room that stood out the most were the bathroom and the balcony.

Hotel Review - Riu Palace Tropical Bay - Spectacular room

The bathroom was covered in marble and had two sinks. There was a separate stand-up shower, and the toilet was in its own little room. There was a spacious jetted bathtub out in the open, and you could see straight through from the bathroom to the bedroom. This suite would be perfect for a romantic getaway or honeymooners. Even though I was staying in the room alone, I had many relaxing moments soaking in the tub.

Hotel Review - Riu Palace Tropical Bay - Spectacular room

The balcony was gigantic and had an incredible view. Although I didn’t, I could have done cartwheels across the balcony. The private views of Bloody Bay Beach were outstanding. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Insider Tips

Here are a few things I wish I would have known when I first arrived:

  • The best coffee was located in the lobby bar. There was an espresso machine there, and the bartender made the best Cafe Americano.
  • Book your dinner reservations first thing in the morning for the following day. We discovered that if you wanted to reserve a spot in the restaurant, you were best to request it right away. These tables booked up fast.
  • Look at the entertainment schedule ahead of time and plan your dinner times accordingly. There were two times for dinner (6:30 and 8:30) and the late dinner schedule conflicted with the production shows. In these situations, grab an early dinner before the nighttime entertainment.
  • On the topic of entertainment, do yourself a favor and definitely check out the evening with the steel drum band. There was a local Jamaican steel drum act and they were really talented. Also, don’t miss the epic performance of “Beauty and the Beast” by the entertainment staff that comes right before the steel drum show. I won’t go into too much detail because I don’t want to ruin it; just trust me on this one.

YS Falls in Jamaica - Tour with Viator

There were many excursions offered directly from the hotel or you could book your own. I preferred to book ones outside of the resort because I found that the prices were better and I had more choices. Here are a couple that I personally took and can recommend:

  • YS Falls and Black River Safari – Read my review | Book your excursion
  • Luminous Lagoon – Read my review | Book your excursion
  • Rick’s Cafe and Negril day trip
  • Be sure to check out Ras Rody’s Organic Roadside Vegan for delicious food while you’re in Negril

How to Book

It’s always a good idea to compare package deals online before booking your holiday. I find that it’s cheaper to book the all-inclusive package all together , which includes the flight and the hotel stay. I also recommend that you look up the prices for the hotel and the flights separately to ensure that you’re getting the best deal possible.

Flight to Montego Bay Jamaica

If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday at a gorgeous resort, the Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay in Negril, Jamaica should be on your radar. It had beautiful swimming pools, delicious vegan meals, and one of the best beaches I’ve ever visited. I highly recommend that you take your next resort holiday there.

My wife and I are planning an all inclusive trip this spring to Jamaica. She is a vegan and I would like to know if you stayed at any of these resorts and if so which ones catered to vegans and which ones you would recommend for a first time traveler?

Wednesday 21st of November 2018

Yes! I stayed at the Riu Palace Tropical Bay and I ate lots of vegan food there. I wouldn't say they specifically cater to vegans, but you are able to eat yummy vegan meals there if you request them. I wrote a whole blog post on it here:

https://justinpluslauren.com/vegan-guide-to-riu-negril-jamaica/

There's also this amazing vegan food stand in Negril, which you could combine with a trip to Rick's Cafe if you choose. It's called Ras Rody's Roadside Organic and the food is delicious! Here's my article about it:

I have been to Jamaica once- the Grand Palladium. Liked it but did not love. Your room looks amazing!!!!!

My friend, Shannon who went on this holiday with me had also stayed at the Grand Palladium and enjoyed this one better, simply for the reason that it was smaller and you could walk everywhere. And the beach is gorgeous here!

We stayed at the Riu in Montego Bay a few months ago for a friend's 30th birthday--I am not a huge fan of all inclusives, but I have to admit we had a great time, too! It is nice to actually relax every now and again. Excited to hear what else you did in Jamaica!

I'm glad the Montego Bay one was awesome, too! I heard good things about it. And yes...we all need to relax now and again, right? :)

Just returned from 2 weeks stay. This is a great resort in a beautiful location with an excellent soft sandy beach. The staff were very pleased to help you enjoy your stay. Food was good in all the restaurants. Worth the slightly longer trip from the airport. Would hope to return at some time.

  • Sleep Quality
  • Cleanliness

Visited the refurbished Riu Palace in Negril. First, this place was great. The four of us (parents with two teens) stayed in really clean and comfortable side by side ocean front suites. By ocean front, I mean very ocean front, not the 300 meters behind a tropical garden blocking the view type of ocean front. The resort is spacious, plenty of pool side lounge chairs for those who prefer the pool and an uncrowded beach. The Riu Palace has the best stretch on’f beach of all resorts in the bay. The beach is exactly what you show expect of Negril, and the ocean is great (practically speaking littlebor no waves) Note that this hotel in NOT on 7 mile beach and don’t assume you can just take an extended beach walk beyond the Bay and onto 7 Mile beach. Food was plentiful and a lot of options for m’est lovers and vegetarians. I would definitely go back to this hotel.

Dear ElaineM179, Thank you for reaching out to us with your feedback! We are delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and cannot wait to welcome you back in the near future! With our best wishes we remain, Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay Online Reputation Manager

It was our first time in Negril as well as at the Riu Palace Tropical Bay. The resort is beautiful and the most gorgeous beach we have ever been on. The water was so clear and blue and calm! We had several people walking on the beach from other resorts that commented how much nicer ours was than theirs. When we vacation we want to lay on the beach enjoy good food and drinks. Riu had all of that, plenty of beach chairs for everyone, great drinks and the food was fantastic. We had 2 days when we had great beach service for drinks but then the rest of the week we went up to the bar. Not sure if they were short staffed or what, they servers were also trying to cover the pools. We went to the steak house one night and the fillet and lobster were wonderful. All the rest of the week we went to the buffet because the had such a great selection. Shout out to our server Tamara, she was so friendly and we had a great time with her. Craig was our server at lunch and did a fantastic job. He went out of his way when one of our party wasn't feeling well to get him some ginger extract to take. They had a fun Super Bowl night and showed the game on the big screen. The steel band that came and performed one evening were amazing. The only thing I see for improvement is better visual of what each days activities were and times. It tooks us about 4 days in before we finally realized there was a digital board by the front desk that had the days activities posted. Have it come up on the TV everytime you turn it on or post it in more places would be great. We missed playing bingo and some of the other games because we didn't know they were happening until to late. Otherwise, we will definitely be back to the Riu! Thanks for a great visit!

Overall a very nice experience. All of our dining visits were great from the buffets to the specialty restaurants. The rooms had good air conditioning and clean. Our toilet however constantly had the chain coming off in the tank. While not a fan of the two beds making a "king" bed, we did both have plenty of room. The balcony faced the ocean and gave us great views. The beach was the best! Plenty of chairs and drink service on the beach. While we didn't do much of the entertainment or games they were provided. Cute gift shop with all the necessities plus more. Good fun drinks but ask for a double. Staff was efficient but most aren't super interactive if that's what's important to you. Be wary of walking the beaches towards the local tents with their wares and services. They can get pretty pushy and defensive sometimes. The boating activities offered by the resort are nice and the catamaran tour to Ricks was a blast. Our couples massage was nice and a coupon was provided. Not a lot of outlets with the updated interior.

Dear 199carlys, Thank you very much for your lovely feedback. It brings us great joy to know how much you enjoyed your stay 😊. It has been delightful to host you at our hotel and we would be glad to do it again in a near future. With our best wishes we remain, Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay Online Reputation Manager

We stayed at this resort from January 27th to February 3rd and were very impressed. Other than 1 day of rain as a result of the tornado in neighbouring Cuba, we enjoyed good weather. We loved the beach with the beautiful calm waters and the location where you could walk for 20 minutes either way. One day, we visited the sister resort, Riu Negril where we had lunch at their buffet overlooking the ocean. Along the way, there were many vendors selling souvenirs. We enjoyed the food at the resort, especially the jerk chicken shack and the Krystal a la carte restaurant which we visited 3 times. I had the Sea Bass on all of my visits which was fantastic and my husband loved the Lobster Risotta and pineapple dessert. It was nice trying the cocktails with our favourites; Mojitos, Blue Hawaiian and Bob and Rita Marley. I had a wonderful aromatherapy massage at the Renova Spa and we also enjoyed a catamaran cruise to Rick's Cafe which we booked through our Sunwing rep. The newly renovated rooms were nicely decorated and clean and we liked our location in Villa #1 as it was close to a quiet section of the beach. All in all, it was an amazing week and we would consider returning to this wonderful resort!

Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay: All-Inclusive Sun, Sand and Music

Beach Loungers at Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay

Guest bloggers John and Sandra Nowlan report on their visit to Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay in Negril, Jamaica, and their off-resort adventures with NexusTours.

Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a popular cruise ship stop so we’ve previously visited this tropical island as cruise passengers for a day trip. But this time we were going farther afield for a full week of sun, sand and fine Jamaican food. The music was a bonus.

After a non-stop Sunwing flight from Canada, we joined a 90-minute bus transfer from the airport to our resort, the Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay in Negril. The seaside route, filled with colorful houses and bustling villages, was fascinating.

White sand beach and clear blue waters

The white sand beach in front of the low rise, three-story buildings of our Riu Resort was surprisingly wide with lots of palm trees for shade and more than 900 loungers, enough for every guest. Unlike many resorts, the beach was never overcrowded. Non-intrusive peddlers roamed the beach – all are public – but the roving musical entertainers were especially good. Most carried guitars and drums but one energetic soul pulled along a large double bass.

There’s no seaweed in the warm, crystal clear Caribbean water and it was totally free of rocks or coral. The water remains shallow out to the buoy barrier, no more than chest or neck high. Some like it that way but we had wished the water was a bit deeper for better swimming.

Riu has six resorts in Jamaica and, as first-timers to the brand, we were impressed with the overall quality of our Negril property.

Thanks to an extensive $35 million renovation in 2018, most of the public rooms and all of the 452 suites looked and felt brand new. Our large, comfortable room, decorated in tasteful colors of cream and beige with turquoise accents, had a partial ocean view but was still very close to the beach.

Our tastefully refurbished room at Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay

The super king size bed had great reading lights and the television included a wide variety of international channels. Closet and drawer space was generous and the large bathroom included a shower with both a traditional and rain shower head. The mini-fridge was stocked daily with complimentary sodas and beer (Jamaica’s Red Stripe, of course) and there was a bar-style liquor dispenser for rum, gin, vodka and low-end Scotch.

Food, glorious food

Excellent cuisine is vital for a top-quality all-inclusive resort and the Riu Palace Tropical Bay was outstanding. Buffets can often be boring but we were impressed with the wide variety in the main dining room, particularly the Caribbean and traditional Jamaican fare available at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many guests stuck with North American dishes but we relished the chance to try ackee & saltfish, Jamaican patties, curried goat, braised oxtail, plantain and rice with red beans.

A chef proudly displays traditional Jamaican fare

Wonderful jerk chicken is available at the buffet but there’s also a jerk shack on the beach with a superb chef, Jolly, who prides himself on his spicy and tasty product.

Tasty Jerk Chicken by the beach

Employing 74 chefs and cooks, the Riu also has four specialty restaurants at no extra charge that do not require reservations. Just come when you want. If it’s full, they’ll give you a remote buzzer.

We enjoyed the Japanese, Italian and Steak House restaurants but especially loved Krystal, the fusion restaurant with an extra level of presentation and service.

The Japanese Restaurant with colourful decor

We enjoyed braised sea bass with miso, lamb with yellow curry and cannelloni with braised ossobuco. The steak house is the most informal specialty restaurant (shorts and T-shirts allowed). Our first New York strip loin was tough but it was happily replaced by an excellent fillet. The Caribbean lobster was especially good.

Desserts aplenty at Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay

That’s entertainment

In addition to the beach musicians, the Riu has nightly on-stage entertainment. Most shows have a Caribbean focus (the Jamaican theme was especially interesting) but touring specialty acts, like the Michael Jackson show, are very popular.

Nexus Tours offers a wide variety of off-resort adventures and we chose a delightful rafting trip down the Great River. In earlier days, 30-foot long bamboo rafts were used to transport bananas. Now, these sturdy rafts have been fitted with comfortable, elevated chairs for two. An experienced guide poles his way downriver, navigating mild rapids and pointing out the remarkable flora and fauna.

Rafting on the river with NexusTours

The relaxing 45-minute mini-cruise was followed by a visit to a banana plantation, a Jamaican lunch (jerk chicken) and samples of unique Jamaican liquors.

After our week in the sun, we asked a few winter-weary Americans and Canadians about their Jamaica experience . All seemed to be delighted. The popular response? “We’ll be coming back for sure.”

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

excursions from riu palace tropical bay

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

excursions from riu palace tropical bay

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
