She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly lovable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean Headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules.

But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts. She could just be the pupils’ saving grace, using her extraordinary gifts to outsmart even the formidable Miss Trunchbull.

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning  Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical  is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin,  Matilda  has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit and intelligence who loves to read. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs and an uplifting message,  Matilda's   story proves that despite the odds, you can do anything you put your mind to — and change your destiny. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by this story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Artistic director & director - sandy boren-barrett director & music director - jc lippold directing intern - alexa kromrey fja apprentice directing - mj sjoberg choreographer - krysti wiita assistant choreographer - sayer keeley dialect coach - shana eisenberg props designer - philip hoks sound designer - gretchen katt costume & make up designer - meghan kent set designer - joe stanley lighting designer - tony stoeri wardrobe supervisor - christa ludwig production manager - melanie salmon-peterson stage manager - emily sullivan fja apprentice stage management - bennett smalley assistant stage manager - david gamache sound board operator - gretchen katt light board operators - frances olsen biebighauser, samantha remucal spot light operators - eliana garrick, lilly nobrega, addica sharbono scenic artist - cinde ashley, the creative team bios, sandy boren-barrett (director) - sandy boren-barrett has been with stages theatre company (stc) since 1990, allowing her to pursue her passion for theatre production and education, along with community building theatre serving young audiences. during her time in leadership stc has been awarded national recognition with the 2017 harold oaks award for innovative contributions to the field of theatre for young audiences, as well as the 2018 – 50/50 applause award for promoting gender equity with playwrights. stc’s 2019-2020 season selection was highlighted in tya today magazine as an example of “a promising increase in representation specifically in works that feature the stories of contemporary young people of color”. sandy led an international performance tour and artistic exchange with “the egg theatre, the young peoples theatre of theatre royal” in bath england. collaboration is at the core of her work, and as an accomplished director has directed over 75 productions at stc which include many new works, dance-inspired productions, and world premieres. she directed the local premier, mainstage production of rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, the musical which remains the highest attended production at stages theatre company. sandy remains on the executive committee, as former chair of minnesota citizens for the arts (mca) and last spring worked with racially conscious collaboration (rcc) to gain her certification in racial equity organizational leadership., jc lippold (director & music director) - jc is grateful to walk alongside amazing storytellers at stages theatre company in this production as music director, jc has worked at stages theatre company since 2011. his favorite shows include bridge to terabithia, spookley the square pumpkin & the last three pippa/kenny world premieres "what do you do with an idea",  "maybe" and "dragons love tacos: the musical"., krysti wiita phillips (choreographer) - krysti wiita phillips loves being back with the stages theatre company family after working alongside michael matthew ferrell, she is honored to step into the choreographer position. she has worked on rudolph the red-nosed reindeer: the musical (2022), stage’s tuck everlasting, elf the musical, jr. (2021 & 2019), mary poppins, and beauty & the beast. krysti has also worked at many theatres around the twin cities including theatre latte da, children’s theatre company, artistry, ordway center for the performing arts, chanhassen dinner theaters, duluth playhouse, great theatre, and eagan community theater. she has also had the joy of working with hennepin theatre trust’s spotlight awards and high schools around the area. krysti is extremely grateful to her husband and daughter, jory and delaney, and her family for all of their love and support., dennis kelly (book) - work for theatre includes debris, osama the hero, after the end, love and money, taking care of baby, dna, orphans, the gods weep, and the ritual slaughter of gorge mastromas. he has written the book for the new musical of pinocchio which opened at the national theatre at the end of 2017, and in 2018 his new play girls and boys opened at the royal court. his plays have been performed worldwide and to date have been translated into nearly forty languages. for television he co-wrote and co-created pulling and wrote and created utopia. for film, he wrote the screenplay for black sea, directed by kevin macdonald. he also wrote the book for the olivier and tony winning matilda the musical. in 2010, dna became a set text on the gcse english literature syllabus., tim minchin (music & lyrics) - tim minchin is an australian musician, comedian, composer, actor, writer and director. he has toured extensively in the us, uk and australia, performing solo, with bands, and with symphony orchestras. he's released five dvds, the most recent recorded with the heritage orchestra at the royal albert hall. he is the composer lyricist of two hit west end / broadway musicals, matilda and groundhog day, both of which won the olivier award for best west end musical and garnered nominations for best score and best musical in broadway's tony awards. minchin wrote, produced and starred in the sky atlantic / foxtel tv series, upright, in 2019. other screen-acting credits include atticus fetch in season 6 of californication, a logie award-winning smasher sullivan in the abc's secret river, and friar tuck in lionsgate's robin hood reboot. stage highlights include judas in the uk / australian arena tour of jesus christ superstar in 2012, and rosencrantz in the sydney theatre company's rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead the following year. he has published two books: the graphic novel, "storm", and the illustrated childrens' book, "when i grow up". he is a member of the order of australia, a philanthropist and a mediocre juggler., our 40th anniversary season.

The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Matilda The Musical is now booking through to May 2025 with tickets for the new dates now on sale.

A tonic for audiences of all ages, this anarchic production about a strong and determined heroine with a vivid imagination has now won 101 international awards including 24 for Best Musical. On World Book Day on 7 March 2024, Matilda The Musical performed as part of the final of the BBC’s 500 Words competition at Buckingham Palace which aired on BBC1 The One Show. 

Now in its 13th year in London and continuing to play to packed houses in the West End, Matilda The Musical has been seen by 11 million people across more than 90 cities worldwide and is thrilled to welcome new young performers to the Cambridge Theatre. 

Anna Deikalo, Ava Posniak and Sophia Saravanan will join Estella Evans in the title role, with their first performances from 12 March 2024.  

The other new young performers announced today joining the London company in the roles of Bruce, Lavender, Nigel and the rest of the pupils at Crunchem Hall are: Nesim Adnan , Ryo Appadu, Chloe Boyle, Amelia-Grace Cambridge, Caoimhe Fisher, Jesamine-Bleu Gibbs, Matthias Green, Daisy Jeffcoate, Kaylen Luke, Lola McCourtie, Yvie Moore, Harry Newby, Alex Prior, Frankie Treadaway and Marnie Rae Warren-Baker.  

These new performers join the existing young cast who continue in their roles: Jake Durant, Max Garlick, Lilia Guinoubi, Coco-Lili Hodder, Zarian Marcel Obatarhe, Elliott Marsden, Toryn O’Callaghan, Kristiano Ricardo, Harriet Rogers , and Archie Smith . 

The current adult cast includes: Rakesh Boury (Mr Wormwood), Kieran Hill (Miss Trunchbull), Amy Ellen Richardson (Mrs Wormwood), and Lydia White (Miss Honey). The ensemble includes: Esme Bacalla-Hayes, Thea Bunting , Ronan Burns , Ella Caldwell, Stan Doughty , Nolan Edwards , Karina Hind , Aaron Jenkins , Sam Lathwood , Sean Lopeman , Ruairidh McDonald, Kane Oliver Parry , Roan Pronk, Gabrielle Davina Smith, Deborah Tracey and Lauren Varnham .  

Written by Dennis Kelly , with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and developed and directed by Matthew Warchus , the production is designed by Rob Howell , with choreography by Peter Darling , orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale , lighting by Hugh Vanstone , sound by Simon Baker and special effects and illusions by Paul Kieve .
