Imagine experiencing the best of Indian beauty in just one week, with all luxury that you could ask for. I never expected that adventure and luxury can be experienced in one single journey until I first walked through the red carpet traditional welcome with musicians and other performers. Turns out, Palace on Wheels is all about recreating the royal experience of the coronation heirs of the land.

The train took us through some of the emblematic destinations of the land and each destination was focused on exposing a specific essence of the land. Days are spent exploring the terrain of the land, spotting end-less masterpieces of the past and natural beauty. By night, the train gets to the party mode. The lounge holds a large collection of international and local alcoholic beverages. With music in the air and like-minded people around you, ‘paradise’ will be an underrating adjective for Palace on Wheels vacation .

Our adventure started at New Delhi and take us through cities of Rajasthan to cover sam sand dunes, colorful culture, camel-focused lifestyle, marvelous pieces of architecture and the unparalleled hospitality. The tour ended with the grand finale of the marble mausoleum, Taj Mahal .

Onboard, the first impression of the cabin is the royal-contemporary nostalgic look. However, each element of the cabin starting from the embroidery work on my sheets to the wall hangings, each speck of decoration brought its connects with the land. The décor manages to incorporate heritage and historic elements into your vacation.

When it comes to India, there is something endearing about food. Throughout my vacation, I felt like food was their culture, medicine, hospitality, celebration, and expression. Palace on Wheels had a gastronomical adventure planned for us. The restaurants brought in a great deal of expectations when it came to mealtime, with its decor, delicious menu and exceptional services.

Combining the architectural styles of European, Rajput and Mughal, this palace features an array of gardens, temples and pavilions. Noteworthy structures include Chandra Mahal, Maharani’s Palace, Mubarak Mahal, Shri Goving Dev temple, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-E-Khas, and the City Palace Museum. Within the complex lies several buildings, including banquet, palaces and a museum that features an eclectic collection of paintings and artefacts from across the world. After exploring the interior, get some refreshing air outside in the lush manicured gardens and indulge in a game of golf at the 10-hole golf course within the compound. Royal Palaces of India

Destination, majesty and luxury abounding.

India’s grand and gorgeous architectural masterworks have enchanted the West for scores of centuries. Lord Curzon, India’s most astute Viceroy, praised its temples, tombs, and palaces as “the greatest galaxy of monuments in the world.”

On this two-week journey to India’s northern heartland, we immerse ourselves in that stellar firmament, visiting the grandest of the subcontinent’s monuments—with an enthralling emphasis on its old and its new palaces, in which, enveloped in luxurious hospitality, we’re happy to say we stay. At: Delhi’s Leela Palace; the fabulous Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, where every window looks out at the nearby Taj Mahal; at the exquisite Rambagh Palace, home of Jaipur’s last reigning maharajah; at Udaipur’s lyric Oberoi Udaivilas; and the Taj Group’s majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur.

Royal Places of India

India’s ability to exert power through the sheer charm of its civilization should not be underestimated. William Dalrymple Science and Technology in India Through the Ages
  • Lodgings fit for—and often built for—royalty: the noble Rambagh Palace in Jaipur; Agra’s showcase Amarvilas; the serene and fantastical Udaivilas in Udaipur; and perhaps the grandest palace hotel on the planet: the Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur.
  • Intimate encounters with the “gem of man’s creation,” the Taj Mahal.
  • Services of a Micato Travel Director from touchdown to takeoff—and 24-hours-a-day backup from our Concierge Service.
  • The Pink City of Jaipur, an ongoing festival of swirling colour and splendid palaces; gently enchanting Udaipur; the grandeur of Delhi; and the forts and lovely countryside of Jodhpur.
  • Rare access to palatial apartments and rooms, and insider’s access to bright Indian personalities and specialists of all kinds.

After a leisurely morning we’ll have an orientation lunch with our Micato Travel Director. Now we’ll delve into swirlingly colourful Old Delhi, rickshawing over to Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest and most impressive mosques (it’s one of the last monuments built by Shah Jahan, whose world-crowning glory, the Taj Mahal, we’ll soon see). We’ll visit Humayan’s Tomb (said to have inspired the eagerly inspirable Jahan), pay our respects at the Gandhi Museum, explore the British Raj’s imposing New Delhi edifices, and mingle with happy pilgrims at giant Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a bustling Sikh temple.

The first of our Indian palaces, the Leela , is set in the capital’s Diplomatic Enclave, and beckons with quietude, unabashed luxury, and India’s unceasingly gracious hospitality.

A modern toll road takes us to Agra for a couple of days in the sweetly hypnotic aura of the Taj Mahal. Our base is the Oberoi Amarvilas , a scintillating Oberoi jewel. Every window in Amarvilas looks out at the Taj, less than two thousand feet away, giving us ever-changing views of humanity’s greatest artifact from our beautifully decorated, balconied rooms and from the hotel’s restaurants and expansive verandahs.

We’ll make early morning and evening visits to the Taj, wandering in its gardens and under its white-cloud archways. We’ll amble in fascinating Agra Fort (where Shah Jahan was imprisoned for the last years of his life, peering dolefully out at his masterpiece). We’ll visit a marble inlay studio (after seeing the exquisite Taj inlays, we’ll want to know how this marble magic works), returning to the Amarvilas for a swim in its lovely pool, dinner at its top-flight restaurant, making sure to catch a few minutes or hours to contemplate the Taj.

A countryside drive takes us to the fabled Pink City of Jaipur. For more than half a millennium Jaipur’s Rajput maharajahs were renowned for their regal disdain for rupee-pinching. They spent, played, and built extravagantly; witness our palace, the Rambagh, home of the last of Jaipur’s rulers, Sawai Man Singh II. The Rambagh Palace , now a Taj Group property, regularly lands high on lists of the World’s Best Hotels, for its frank splendour, its traditionally noble but state-of-the-art comfy rooms, its cool marble corridors, its fountain-misted gardens, its fine dining, and, in the Taj Group custom, its flawlessly alert and cheery service.

There is much to see and enjoy in the Pink City, and with our Micato Travel Director at our side, we’ll do our best to take it all in, visiting the vast and fabulously ornate City Palace; hot air ballooning in the early morning as Jaipur awakens; rambling in the Doctor Seussian (but strikingly accurate), 280 year-old Jantar Mantar Observatory; and admiring the whimsical Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds. We’ll wander in the mirrored mini-palaces of massive Amber Fort, lunch at the serene Samode Palace a little way out of town, and spend a late afternoon helping bathe lovingly-cared-for elephants at a private estate, followed by a festively al fresco dinner.

A morning flight takes us to lakeside Udaipur, beloved of Indians and internationals for its beauty and serenity, its intriguing temples, and its chromatic history—which we’ll experience in the flamboyant City Palace, hilltop home of Udaipur’s Mewar maharanas, who, like their Mughal suzerains, gracefully avoided all things frugal.

Udaipur has a Venetian feel, with homes and palaces built by the shores of Lake Pichola, and we’ll take a sunset boatride across the lake to our lodgings, the sublime Oberoi Udaivilas , recently ranked the planet’s second best hotel by Condé Nast Traveler , and the number one Indian resort hotel by Travel+Leisure . We luxuriate in Udaivilas’ sparkling pools, domed public rooms, in its artwork, fragrant gardens and spa, reveling in a modern palace in which India’s maharajahs, maharanas, nizams, and assorted nawabs would feel right at regal home.

We drive northwest towards Jodhpur, stopping for a quiet lunch en route s and a visit to the Jain temple complex at Ranakpur before motoring up to the doors of the Umaid Bhawan Palace , fittingly the last and the largest of India’s great palaces.

Umaid Bhawan sits among 26 garden acres atop Chittar Hill, overlooking the Sun City of Jodhpur. The vast palace—once the world’s largest private residence— now serves as a museum, as the home of the old ruling family, and as a uniquely stately hotel, expertly operated, as always, by the Taj Group. Our palace rooms are decorated with Art Deco themes and feature all the luxuries, amenities, and grace notes we’ve come expect from a Taj hotel. The Umaid Bhawan is, as they say, a destination in itself, but so is Jodhpur; we’ll wander in the Old City, visit monolithic Mehrangarh Fort and the glowing marble cenotaph of Jaswant Thada, and we’ll take a jeep safari through Bishnoi villages (the Bishnoi are a religious group rooted in deep respect for nature), followed by a beautifully catered picnic lunch and a return to the inimitable Umaid Bhawan.

After flying back to Delhi, we’ll have day rooms,—and night rooms, if necessary for late flights—at the palatial Oberoi Gurgaon , near Delhi’s airport.

The nation's capital rings to the sounds of car horns, chai stalls and the chatter of its 29 million inhabitants. Shuffle into an open-air rickshaw and ride through the streets of the Old Delhi, admiring traditional Havelis and stopping for a famous mango or pomegranate frozen kulfi to cool off in the summer.

Gaze at the sun-kissed Taj Mahal in Agra

Take a journey to Agra and be stirred by the ultimate symbol of fairy-tale architecture. Inlaid with precious gemstones, this ivory marble palace was originally commissioned by an emperor as a tomb for his wife, standing as a symbol of love and opulence since 1653.

Spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park

Clamber into the back of an open-top safari car and spot leopards, marsh crocodiles, hyenas and Bengal tigers wandering their natural habitat. Sprawling over almost 300km 2 , the Ranthambore National Park is also home to a 10th-century fort, giant banyan trees and many lakes.

Experience royal Rajasthan

Enthralling cities interrupt the inhospitable desert in Rajasthan, India's largest state. Home to around 30 royal palaces including the floating lake palace of Udaipur and the iconic peach palace of Hawa Mahal, you will be swept up by the regal heritage found in this part of India.

Visit one of the Bollywood studios in Mumbai

Take a journey into the metropolis of Mumbai to uncover the prestigious culture of the Indian film industry. Without knowing a word of Hindi or a single Bollywood film, you will be captivated by this passionate industry. Be guided past the homes of megastars and catch a glimpse behind the scenes as the cameras roll.

Our top 5 things to do in India

Let Trafalgar guide your India vacation through a majestic tapestry of landmarks and experience. From the Taj Mahal to the tiger parks of Rajasthan, these are just some of the soul-stirring moments waiting when you travel with us.

National Museum

India vacation tours get under the skin of the country's culture with a trip to the National Museum of New Delhi. Roam the halls and take in elaborate jewellery, ancient manuscripts and traditional miniature paintings on cloth. From the prehistoric to the modern, this expansive Indian museum is a must-visit.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.

City Palace

Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.

Best museums in India

Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.

A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.

Varan Bhaat Diva

Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favorite.

Chicken cafreal

Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.

Best food in India

Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.

What to pack for India

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

Very good experience with Travelogy

We booked a family trip for Palace on Wheels thanks to Travelogy. They were professional and very reactive. Few weeks before our trip, we faced a huge problem with our bank. The situation was very stressful, but Travelogy (and especially Amit) were very helpful. They stayed solution-oriented, reactive and very professionnel, and they helped us to solve our issue. We are very grateful to them. Thank you Travelogy :)

...

The Palace on Wheels journey is truly incredible luxury tour that stays in my memories forever. Journeying through seven vibrant cities including the famous Golden Triangle Circuit and going through a wildlife safari, riding on high animals such as camel and elephant and seeing some ancient palaces and forts that showcase the culture and rich heritage of India in one of the best itineraries.

This week long tour starts with a warm and friendly welcome ceremony at the embarking point and afterwards the first look of the carriages that carried once royal kings and queens centuries back and later the foreign dignitaries. One of the World’s Best Luxury Train tours got a PATWA award under “Best Tourist Trains of the Year” has some luxurious coaches to live in for the week long journey (7 Nights / 8 Days).

However, luxury makes you imagine a 5-star hotel ambiance but these carriages are more royalty themed with ancient portraits of rulers, furniture and décor that match the colonial times, staff in traditional attire like shiny turbans, etc. It is such kind of royal interiors within the Palace on Wheels coaches.

The best part is that there is no planning itineraries or planned trips, researching places, booking accommodations or worrying about the traveling from place to place in a new country! All that is required after booking the fee is getting to the embarking point along with the documents required and comfortable clothing and no more hassles. There is no waiting in line, as there is a PIN number you need to provide so no time is wasted in paperwork, etc.

The first day just goes in getting accustomed to the things and people around. I felt completely rested in the air conditioned cabin, was a rescue from the hot sun. The shower is like steam hot water and the availability is like I can take a shower anytime I return from the day trip or at bedtime. They took great care and gave lots of attention to make every passenger on the luxury train feel special.

Although some travelers had issues with sleeping due to the train’s chugging sounds, I had a comfortable sleep on the cushioned bed with fluffy regal styled furnishings. The next day was intense sightseeing and I had a sound sleep.

I couldn’t wait for the first day of sightseeing to start. This was the first off-board colorful and joyful welcome after which we went to see the top attractions of Jaipur – Hawa Mahal, known for the intricate work, and saw centuries old antiques inside the Albert Hall Museum. After reaching the top of the massive Amber fort on the back of the elephant, the fort walls and unbelievable size was awe-inspiring and left me speechless. It took time to admire all this.

A traditional lunch was served at a historical boutique restaurant called 1135 AD. The evening shopping time was good to collect souvenirs at tourist shops, but would be better to shop at the street markets for a memorable shopping experience at India. The sightseeing included the City Palace tour, a brief time at Jantar Mantar, and an exterior view of Hawa Mahal where we clicked pictures.

The third day started with the wake-up call very early from the attendant who also served hot beverage of fresh coffee brewed. Our group left by 6 am to the wildlife jeep safari Ranthambore National Park. The early morning fresh air and nature was such a much needed break. We could spot a female tiger in the distance, then there were deer and colorful birds.

A healthy breakfast was served on the train after the wildlife tour. There was time to relax on-board the train before lunch. I relaxed in the Health Spa Car & Sitting Lounge car which has flower patters with ancient styled ambiance. This is perfect for relaxation with lots of board games, and magazines. The internet is offered free but at certain regions there was very slow or even no 3G. The Ayurveda Spa was full so I decided to do the treadmill for a while to stay fit. There is even a stationed exercise bicycle at the Spa and fitness corner.

Keep in mind that the itinerary is fast paced and sightseeing is in a group meaning you have to be fit and keep up with the group mostly. Traveling is in A/C Coaches with a guide to accompany and help when needed. So if there is an issue such as need for snacks, water, or toilet, then they can make arrangements.

We saw the massive Chittorgarh Fort and stayed for the Sounds and Lights show which was a learning experience of the rich history of brave rulers. The next day we had a ride in the tuk-tuk through bylanes and I saw the sight of the Lake Pichola was mesmerizing. Unfortunately, that day I had to de-tour due to some personal issues. My tour was cut shot and I had to fortify the remaining tour. However, the memories will stay forever, and hopefully I’ll go back for a complete tour again.

Premium India in Depth Tour

Premium India in Depth

Intrepid Premium India in Depth (November 13 - 25) Mumbai - Delhi Excellent tour leader along with very good local informative guides. 3 changes in accommodation; Mumbai - Gordon House Hotel is excellent, well priced and only 1 street back from Gateway to India but the company changed to Fariyas Hotel, Mumbai which was been renovated as well as painted so very noisy, couldn't use the pool and scaffolding all around. Definitely not ideal. Our second night in Delhi was also cancelled at Jaypee Siddharth Hotel though privately booked and paid for months before the tour so had to find alternative accommodation while on the tour and they told the travel agents they were "closed for renovations" however the tour was booked and stayed there and no renovations were occuring. Hadoti Palace Hotel in Bundi looked nice and rooms were big but not clean especially the toilet and shower. Otherwise all hotels were very nice and rated accurately; cleaning the showers/washrooms would have helped with the mouldy smell but that is somewhat consistent in most countries. November is the start of wedding season in India which are very loud and noisy and have no time restrictions so be prepared for that if going at this time of year. Tour involves quite a number of days travelling in a bus/coach for 4 - 6 hours with a stop every 2 - 3 hours. Rest stops are OK at best with only snack food to purchase. Adjusting the departure time would have helped with timeframes as quite a few days we were getting lunch around 2 - 3 pm when hotel kitchens were closed. Definitely not enough free time for shopping on your own with organized evenings most nights or in a venue on the outside of towns. Toured the markets but they were only a walk through with the group and no time to stop and shop. Restaurants and food was amazing and no one was unwell on the trip. 2 days in Ranthambhore Park was too long and could have done in 1.5 days with more time in Agra. Overall a very good trip for myself and my father (aged 79).

Luxury 3 Day Golden Triangle With 5 star Hotel Tour

Luxury 3 Day Golden Triangle With 5 star Hotel

We just completed a GREAT three-day Golden Triangle tour of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. First, I have to say our driver, Khan, must have gotten his amazing driving skills in another world! He navigated the most difficult roads and situations with ease, making sure we were comfortable and safe the whole time. When visiting a new place, this is so important! He also pointed out a lot of sites and gave us additional points on Indian cultural, all is great English. The daily tour guides did an excellent job too. Each one had an incredible amount of historical, cultural, and societal knowledge and was happy to share with us. It’s was a fast trip, but we saw and learned a lot. I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in seeing a slice on Indian life and learning about Indian culture.

Golden traingle 6 nights 7 days Tour

Golden traingle 6 nights 7 days

Last October we spent 1 week traveling through Golden Triangle. To plan the trip we study several companies and alternatives. Finally we decided on this agency which we found online. Mr. Lucky, who is responsible in India, gave us trust from the beginning. First for being Indian, for his knowledge of the country and for his kindness and willingness to adapt the trip to our interests. The bet could not go better. An incredible trip, perfectly organized, during which we always feel supported by the agency. We went on a private trip with car and driver at our disposal. New car, clean, lovely driver who gave us security every time we were on the road ... In short, a reliable agency with which we are sure to make the next trip when we return to "Incredible India"...

Delhi, Palaces, Ganges - 10 days

This was my first tour. It was totally wonderful because of Satish. I have knee and hip issues - Satish helped me up and down all the steps at the temples, monuments and ghats - he made sure I was able to enjoy every part of the tour. He also ordered my food in restaurants so I would get the "spicy" version - not the tourist version. He was very knowledgeable about everything we saw. He shared a lot of information with us and I was able to get a deeper insight into Indian life and religion. I loved everything about the tour.

Palaces & Forts in India

14 Famous Forts and Palaces in India that You Must See

palace tour of india

Jami Tarris / Getty Images

When thinking of India, ultimately forts and palaces come to mind. After all, they're a significant part of the country's extensive history, and they've been featured in countless photos and documentaries.

Hence, it's not surprising that these architectural marvels are high on the "must-see" lists of tourists when traveling through India. The majority of India's forts and palaces are located in Rajasthan, where they were built by clans of warrior Rajput rulers (before being invaded by the Mughals). The Pink City of Jaipur has a particularly large number of them. However, you'll find them scattered through other states as well, as remnants of the Mughal era.

Many of India's palaces have now been converted into hotels by their once royal owners. This been necessary in order for them to generate an income, after their royal status and privileges were abolished by the Constitution of India in 1971. You'll find more about them in this essential guide to palace hotels in India.

Otherwise, read on to discover 14 of the most impressive forts and palaces in India that are open to the general public.

Amber Fort, Jaipur, Rajasthan

TripSavvy / Alicia Erikson

Amber Fort is perhaps the most well-known fort in India. It gets its name from the small heritage town of Amber (also known as Amer) where it's situated, about 20 minutes northeast of Jaipur. Rajput ruler Maharaja Man Singh I began constructing the fort in 1592. Successive rulers added to it and occupied it until Jaipur was built and the capital relocated there in 1727. Now, it's one of Jaipur's top tourist attractions.

The fort is part of a group of six hill forts in Rajasthan that were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013 (the others are Jaisalmer Fort, Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh, Ranthambore Fort, Gagron Fort, and Amber Fort). Its architecture is a magnificent blend of Hindu and Mughal influences. Made out of sandstone and white marble, the fort complex consists of a series of courtyards, palaces, halls, and gardens. The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) is widely regarded as the most beautiful part of it, with intricately carved, glittering walls and ceilings. You can learn about the Fort's history in the evening sound and light show .

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Mehrangarh Fort is not only one of Jodhpur's top attractions but is also one of the most impressive, well-maintained forts in India. It looms over the "Blue City" from its lofty position atop a rocky hill where it was built by the ruling dynasty of Rathore Rajputs. King Rao Jodha started constructing the fort in 1459, when he established his new capital in Jodhpur. However, the work continued to be carried out by subsequent rulers right up until the 20th century. As a result, the fort has remarkably diverse architecture.

Unlike other Rajput forts that ended up abandoned, Mehrangarh Fort still remains in the hands of the royal family. They've restored it and turned it into an outstanding tourist destination comprising a series of palaces, museums, and restaurants. What also sets the fort apart from others in Rajasthan is its focus on folk art and music. There are cultural performances every day at various locations in the fort. In addition, the fort provides the backdrop for acclaimed music festivals such as the annual World Sacred Spirit Festival in February and Rajasthan International Folk Festival in October.

Jaisalmer Fort, Rajasthan

There aren't too many places in the world where you can visit a "living" fort but Jaisalmer, in the Thar desert, is one of them . The city's mirage-like yellow sandstone fort is home to thousands of people who have been residing in it for generations. The fort also has a multitude of shops, hotels, restaurants, a palace complex, old haveli mansions, and temples inside it.

Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal began building Jaisalmer fort in 1156, making it one of the oldest forts in Rajasthan. It eventually expanded to cover the whole hill and transformed itself into a city, which swelled in population during times of conflict. The fort survived many battles. However, its condition is now rapidly deteriorating due to illegal construction and poor drainage. Wastewater has been seeping into the fort's foundations, making it unstable and causing parts to collapse.

Udaipur City Palace, Rajasthan

Romantic Udaipur is known as the city of palaces and lakes. It was founded in 1559 by Mewar ruler Maharana Udai Singh II, and the kingdom's capital was later relocated there from Chittorgarh after Mughal invasion. At the heart of it, bordering Lake Pichola, is the City Palace Complex. Notably, it's still partially occupied by the Mewar royal family today. They've done a commendable job of developing it into a tourist destination that intimately presents the history of the Maharanas of Mewar. The "jewel in the crown" (pardon the pun) is the City Palace Museum.

The museum comprises both the Mardana Mahal (King's Palace) and Zenana Mahal (Queen's Palace), which make up the City Palace. Constructed over four and a half centuries, it's the oldest and largest part of the City Palace Complex. The architecture is the main highlight, along with the priceless private royal galleries, artwork, and photographs.

Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

Massive Chittorgarh Fort is regarded as the greatest fort in Rajasthan and is also one of the largest forts in India. It sprawls across some 700 acres!  Mewar kings ruled from the fort for eight centuries, until Mughal Emperor Akbar besieged and captured it in 1568. Akbar's eldest son, Jehangir, ended up giving the fort back to the Mewars in 1616. However, they never resettled there.

Due to its size, the fort is most comfortably explored by vehicle and it's a good idea to allow at least three hours to do so. Some parts of it are in ruin but its former glory is still very much present. Attractions include old palaces, temples, towers, and a reservoir where it's possible to feed fish. Climb to the top of Vijay Stambha (Tower of Victory) for a dramatic view.

Perhaps the most shocking part of the fort is the area used as a royal cremation ground. It's also where tens of thousands of Rajput women immolated themselves, choosing death before dishonor, on the three occasions that the fort was taken by rival armies in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Chittorgarh is located in the southern part of Rajasthan, around half way between Delhi and Mumbai, and just over two hours drive from Udaipur. It can easily be visited on a day trip or side trip from Udaipur .

Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan

Often referred to as "The Great Wall of India", Kumbhalgarh's imposing fort wall extends for more than 35 kilometers and is the second longest continuous wall in the world (the Great Wall of China is the first).

Kumbhalgarh was the most important fort of the Mewar kingdom after Chittorgarh. The rulers used to retreat to Kumbhalgarh during times of danger as it was impenetrable. The fort was built by Mewar ruler Rana Kumbha during the 15th century. Apparently, it took him 15 years and numerous attempts to complete it! There are about 360 ancient temples, as well as palace ruins, step wells, and cannon bunkers inside it.

Kumbhalgarh is also famous for the fact that legendary king and warrior Maharana Pratap (great great grandson of Rana Kumbha) was born there, in 1540, in the mansion known as Jhalia ka Malia (Palace of Queen Jhali). He succeeded his father Udai Singh II (the founder of Udaipur) as the ruler of Mewar. Unlike many surrounding rulers, he refused to concede to the Mughals despite Emperor Akbar's negotiations. This resulted in the famous battle of Haldi Ghati in 1576, which played an important role in India's history.

The fort is located just over two hours drive north of Udaipur, in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district. It's popularly visited on a day trip or side trip from Udaipur. It's possible to hire a car there from one of the numerous travel agencies. Many people combine visiting Kumbhalgarh with Haldi Ghati or the Jain temples at Ranakpur.

Jaipur City Palace, Rajasthan

Situated at the center of the Old City of Jaipur , the City Palace Complex was built mainly between 1729 and 1732 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. He had been successfully ruling from nearby Amber Fort but increasing population and water shortage made him decide to relocate his capital to Jaipur in 1727.

The royal family still lives in the Chandra Mahal part of the palace (their family flag flies atop it when the Maharaja is in residence), while the remainder has been converted into the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II museum. For a hefty fee (2,500 rupees for foreigners and 2,000 rupees for Indians), you can take the Royal Grandeur tour through the inner quarters of the Chandra Mahal. Otherwise, you'll have to be content with exploring the rest of the palace.

The most eye-catching part of it is Pitam Niwas Chowk, the interior courtyard that leads to the Chandra Mahal. It has four beautifully painted doors, or gates, representing the four seasons and dedicated to Hindu gods Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesh, and Goddess Devi (the mother goddess). The peacock motifs on the doorway of Peacock Gate are particularly stunning and widely photographed.

Agra Fort, Uttar Pradesh

Agra Fort is unfortunately overshadowed by the Taj Mahal but should in fact be visited before it, as it's a poignant prequel to the monument. The fort was the first grand Mughal fort in India, from where four generations of influential Mughal emperors ruled during the height of the Mughal empire. In addition, it was one of the first sites in India to get UNESCO World Heritage listing, in 1983.

The fort, in its current form, was constructed by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century when he decided to strategically set up a new capital in Agra. He made it primarily as a military installation. The opulent white marble palaces and mosques were later added by Emperor Shah Jahan, Akbar's grandson, during the 17th century. (He loved white marble so much, he also built the Taj Mahal out of it).

Shah Jahan modeled the Red Fort in Delhi on Agra Fort, when he stated developing his new capital there in 1638. However, he died in Agra Fort after being imprisoned in it by his power-hungry son Aurangzeb, who took over the throne.

The British took control of the fort in 1803 and it was a place of battle during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which threatened the rule of the British East India Company. When the British left India in 1947, they handed the fort over to the Indian government. The Indian Army now uses most of it.

Red Fort, Delhi

 Shraddha Gosavi / TripSavvy

One of Delhi's top attractions and most famous monument, the Red Fort stands as a powerful reminder of the Mughals who ruled India but it's also an icon of independent India. It was completed in 1648. Emperor Shah Jahan made it to resemble the Red Fort in Agra but on a much grander scale in accordance with his ambition and lavish tastes. In recognition of its significance, the Red Fort was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Unfortunately, the fort's prosperity didn't last long. It declined along with the might of the Mughals and fortunes of the royal family. The Persians plundered it in 1739, looting many priceless valuables. It was also taken over by the Sikhs, Marathas and British. The British destroyed much of the fort's palatial buildings following the failed Indian Rebellion of 1857 and then set up an army base inside it. Almost a century later, when India gained independence from the British, the Red Fort was selected as the primary site of public celebration.

The fort's Old Delhi location, opposite Chandni Chowk, is fascinating and close to Jama Masjid —another marvelous treasure of the Old City and one of the biggest mosques in India. The area around the Red Fort really comes alive during the Navaratri festival and Dussehra, with fairs and Ram Lila performances.

Gwalior Fort, Madhya Pradesh

Ancient and imposing Gwalior Fort, one of the must see tourist places in Madhya Pradesh , has a very long and turbulent history.

The fort's history can be traced as far back as 525. Over the years, it was subjected to many attacks and had many different rulers. It wasn't until the reign of the Rajput Tomar dynasty that the fort really rose to prominence, and was built to its current scale and grandeur. During this time, ruler Raja Man Singh Tomar crafted one of the fort's main highlights, Man Mandir Palace, between 1486 and 1516. Its outer walls are distinctively decorated with blue mosaic tiles and rows of yellow ducks.

Later on, the Mughals used the fort as a prison during their rule.

The fort's size is large enough to warrant having your own transport, as there's a lot to see inside it. The compound contains a number of historic monuments, Hindu and Jain temples, and palaces (one of which, the Gujari Mahal, has been converted into an Archeological Museum).

The fort's most dramatic entrance, known as Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate), is on the eastern side and leads into Man Mandir palace. However, it's only accessible on foot and requires a steep climb through a series of other gates. The western gate, Urvai Gate, is conveniently reachable by vehicle, although it's nowhere near as impressive. There are some intricate Jain sculptures cut into the rock on the way up though, which shouldn't be missed.

A sound and light show is held nightly in the fort's open air amphitheater.

Golconda Fort, Hyderabad

Located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the ruins of Golconda Fort are a popular day trip from the city . The fort originated as a mud fort in the 13th century, when it was founded by the Kakatiya Kings of Waranga. However, its heyday was during the reign of the Qutub Shahi dynasty, from 1518 to 1687.

Later, during the 17th century, Golconda Fort rose to prominence for its diamond market. Some of the world's most priceless diamonds were found in the area.

The fort's ruins consist of numerous gateways, drawbridges, temples, mosques, royal apartments and halls, and stables. Some of its bastions are still mounted with canons. What's particularly interesting about the fort though, is its architecture and special acoustic design. If you stand at a certain point under the dome at Fateh Darwaza (Victory Gate) and clap, it can be clearly heard more than a kilometer away at Bala Hissar Gate, the fort's main entrance. Apparently, this was used to warn the royal occupants of attack.

An evening sound and lights show narrates the story of the fort.

Mysore Palace, Karnataka

As far as Indian palaces are concerned, the Maharaja's Palace (commonly referred to as Mysore Palace) is relatively new. It was designed by British architect Henry Irwin and constructed between 1897 and 1912. The palace belongs to Wodeyar kings, who first built a palace in Mysore in the 14th century. However, it was demolished and reconstructed numerous times. The previous palace, made out of wood in Hindu style, was destroyed by fire. The architecture of the current palace is Indo-Saracenic style—a combination of Hindu, Islamic, Rajput, and Gothic influences.

The palace's predominant feature is its marble domes. Some would say its glitzy interiors are over the top. As well as private and public audience halls, there's a marriage hall, pavilion of antique dolls, armory, royal painting gallery, and collection of sculptures and artifacts. Unfortunately, photography isn't permitted inside though.

What's really dazzling about the palace is that it's India's only illuminated royal structure. The exterior gets lit up by 100,000 or so bulbs for about 45 minutes every Sunday evening from 7 p.m., as well as briefly after the nightly sound and light show . It also remains illuminated nightly during the whole 10 days of the Mysore Dasara Festival.

Chitradurga Fort, Karnataka

Chitradurga Fort is worth stopping to see on the way to Hampi from Bangalore or Mysore. You could easily spend half a day, or even a whole day, exploring its vast area and learning about the many legends associated with it. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear though because there's a lot of climbing and walking involved!

The fort occupies 1,500 acres on a cluster of rocky hills. It was constructed in stages by rulers of various dynasties (including the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagars, and Nayakas) from the 10th to the 18th centuries. However, most of the fortification work was done by the Nayakas between the 16th and 18th centuries, when they took over Chitradurga after the fall of the Vijayanagar empire. The fort is known as a stone fort, as its ramparts are made from huge blocks of granite, which blend into the landscape's plentiful boulders. In addition to its numerous concentric walls, gateways, and entrances, the fort apparently has 35 secret pathways and four invisible passages. Plus, 2,000 watchtowers!

Nevertheless, after repeated attacks on Chitradurga, Hyder Ali (who took the throne from the Wodeyars of Mysore) managed to get control of the fort in 1779. He and his son, Tipu Sultan, put the finishing touches on it, including a mosque. The British killed Tipu Sultan in the Fourth Mysore War in 1799 and garrisoned their troops in the fort. Later, they handed it over to the Mysore government.

Attractions inside the fort include many ancient temples, artillery units, stone carvings and sculptures, grinding stones (powered by buffaloes and used to crush gunpowder), cauldrons for storing oil, water tanks, a majestic teak door, and a peak with panoramic views. Hidimbeshwara temple, dedicated to the powerful demon Hidimba, used to be a Buddhist monastery and is fort's most interesting temple. It contains a tooth of the demon and a drum that belonged to her husband Bhima, one of the Pandavas brothers from the Hindu epic "The Mahabharata."

Junagarh Fort, Bikaner, Rajasthan

Although Junagarh Fort is one of Rajasthan's lesser-known forts, it's no less impressive. What's particularly notable about it is that it's one of the few forts in India that isn't situated on a hilltop. The fort is right in the midst of Bikaner and the city grew around it.

Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, built the fort during his reign from 1571 to 1612. He was a well-traveled expert in arts and architecture, and this knowledge is reflected in the fort's superb structures. Subsequent rulers added elaborate palaces, ladies quarters, audience halls, temples, and pavilions.

The fort's original name was Chintamani. The renaming of it to Junagarh (Old Fort) took place in the early 20th century when the royal family relocated to Lalgarh Palace outside the fort limits. However, they continue to maintain it and have opened part of it to the public. Guided tours are conducted, and there are also two museums with many compelling royal artifacts and memorabilia.

The Amba Vilas Palace or the Mysore Palace for short is one of the most beautiful palaces of India. It is also one of the most well-researched and highly visited royal residences in India. And for no small reason.

Mysore Palace is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty who established the Kingdom of Mysore in 1399. The architecture is a beautiful Indo-Saracenic with blends of Hindu, Islamic, Rajput, and Gothic architectural styles.

The two durbar halls or the halls of ceremonies of Mysore Palace are especially striking. Colorful pillars and vibrantly-painted ceilings and walls adorn these halls. Walking through the palace’s audience hall is probably one of the most colorful experiences in India . Whenever you are in Mysore , you should absolutely not miss out on a trip to the Amba Villas Palace.

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace in Bangalore

The Tipu Sultan Summer Palace in  Bangalore is one of two palaces with the same name. Another summer palace of Tipu Sultan is in Srirangapatna, Mysore , where he was born and ascended to the throne.

The summer place in Bangalore was the summer residence of Tipu Sultan, who built it to reflect Indo-Islamic architectural style. After Tipu Sultan’s death in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, this palace was used by the British Administration as its Secretariat until 1868. Today the Archaeological Survey of India takes care of the palace, preserving its glory in entirety.

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace in Bangalore is remarkable. Built entirely of teak and festooned with pillars, arches, and balconies, this royal mansion is a sight for sore eyes. The entire wooden portion of the palace is colored black with golden motifs on the arches and pillars. Stone staircases lead upstairs to a central open area, which was used as the durbar by the Tipu Sultan to receive his subjects.

On the lower ground, a museum now displays artifacts (portraits, clothing, trinkets) from the days of the ruler and associated royalty. The museum showcases a spectacular replica of Tipu’s Tiger, the original of which is in display in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Tips for visiting Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace in Bangalore

  • The palace has enough spots to take beautiful photos. Even though the palace remains open till 5:30 in the evening, visiting the palace in the day will give you a better chance of taking remarkable photos indoor.

City Palace, Jaipur Rajasthan

Jaipur City Palace - one of the must-visit palaces in India

Jaipur, the pink city of India , has a beautiful palace in the centre of the town. This palace was the administrative seat of Maharajas of Jaipur till the year 1949 before the town was merged with the Union of India. The city palace was first built during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who moved his court from Amer to Jaipur in 1727 due to increasing population and shortage of water.

The present-day palace complex is spread over a large area in the heart of the old city, one of the best places to visit in Jaipur . After Maharaja Jai Singh II had built the foundation, his successors added more buildings and courtyards to the premises bearing different architectural styles. One can find a blend of Rajput, Mughal and European architecture in different structures inside the palace complex.

Three gates lead to the palace complex – Tripolia Gate , Virendra Pol and Udai Pol . The most attractive courtyard inside the palace named Pritam Niwas Chowk has four more gates to the main palace building or Chandra Mahal. These gates which are the most popular photo spots inside the city palace are believed to represent the four seasons and four Hindu deities.

Chandra Mahal is still the residential building of the royal family. It has seven floors with each having a unique local name. Mubarak Mahal is now Sawai Man Singh Museum. Many prominent galleries inside the palace are open to visitors now. Sabha Niwas (Hall of Audience), Textile Gallery, Arms Gallery, Painting Gallery, and Transport Gallery are among them.

Tips for visiting City Palace, Jaipur

  • Reserve at least 2 hours to explore the entire palace and its many galleries.
  • The palace closes to visitors between 5 – 7 pm everyday. So, make a note of that time.

Rambagh Palace, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Contributed by Mariellen from Breathe Dream Go

“One evening during the Jaipur Literature Festival, I found myself on the lawn of the Rambagh Palace having drinks under the full moon with a new friend. It was getting late, we were the only guests left, and the Rajasthani musicians had just started a final set. The silhouette of the magnificent palace cast a shadow on the sweeping lawn and the moon touched everything with a silver tinge. It was one of the most romantic, magical evenings of my life, an Incredible India moment writ large”, Mariellen reminisces.

Set on expansive grounds in the centre of Jaipur, Rajasthan, Rambagh Palace represents the royal heritage of one of India’s great cities. The property has belonged to the royal family of Jaipur since 1835. During the reign of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh, it was converted into a hunting lodge (1887). In the 1920s, a royal residence was designed and built by architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob for the Maharaja of Jaipur, Sawai Man Singh II — who added a number of royal suites in 1931. It was the principal  residence of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and his queen, legendary beauty Maharani Gayatri Devi.

Today, Rambagh Palace is a luxury hotel operated by the Taj Hotels Group.

With 78 grand rooms and suites, several fine dining and cafe options, lounges, bars, and a spa, the Rambagh Palace can cater to every desire and make you feel like royalty.

As an authentic example of Rajputana, the palace is extravagantly decorated, as befitting the former chambers of the Maharaja. Though I have never stayed there, I have visited many times for dinner or drinks, always researching what to wear in India and dressing up for the occasion. The Rambagh Palace is much more than a hotel, it is a magnificent landmark, a grand icon, and a citadel of stories — and an absolute must-visit destination when you are in Jaipur.

Tips for visiting Rambagh Palace, Jaipur

  • The hotel offers a historic tour to visitors and guests that you should totally join. It highlights the hand-carved marble latticework, sandstone balustrades, 18th-century crystal chandeliers, cupolas and cenotaphs, and gorgeous Mughal Gardens in the palace.

Thirumalai Nayakar Palace, Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Contributed by Meenakshi from Polka Junction

Madurai Palace. Tamil Nadu

Thirumalai Nayakar Palace is a 17th-century palatial structure that served as the residence of the Nayak dynasty in Madurai. Named after the ruler Thirumalai Nayak who reigned over the city of Madurai for over two centuries, it is one of the finest works of Indo-Saracenic architecture in Tamil Nadu. The palace is also commonly known as Madurai Palace and Nayakar Mahal.

Apart from Madurai Palace’s vast Instagram-worthy corridors and courtyard, the interior of the once celestial pavilion (now a museum) is also a treat to shutterbugs. With impressive stucco work over the arches and massive white pillars, the palace has served as a backdrop for many Indian movies.

The palace was supposedly many times larger than in its present existence. However, Thirumalai Nayak’s grandson demolished much of the sprawling structure when he planned to shift the capital to Tiruchirapalli.

Restoration work was taken up by the British that saw to the palace being renovated. Then, they used it as barracks for its forces as well as a manufacturing unit. Two decades post-independence, Madurai Palace  was declared as a heritage monument.

Tips for visiting Madurai Palace

  • Do not miss the half-an-hour sound and light show, that happens every evening inside the palace.

Ujjayanta Palace, Agartala, Tripura

One of the most beautiful palaces of India that gets much lesser fame than it is due is the Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, Tripura . In fact, not many of us even know of it.

Radha Kishore Manikya, then king of Tripura, built the Ujjayanta Palace between 1899 to 1901. It acted as his residence during that time. After that it was home to every ruler of Tripura until the government of India boughtit from the royal family. It now functions as a state museum.

Sprawled on a huge estate of one square kilometer, Ujjayanta Mahal is a thing of beauty. The design is a harmonious blend of British, Roman and Mughal architectural styles.

Ujjayanta Palace is pure white in color and set within a huge complex of Mughar-era gardens. Especially striking are the palace’s magnificent tile floors, carved wooden doors, and a curved ceiling in the Chinese room.

Glass Work at Sheesh Mahal, Rajasthan

Many of India’s forts enclose grand palaces within their ramparts. These served as living quarters for royal families and their entourage. Amer Fort in Jaipur is a glittering example of one such fort. Within the fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site itself, lies a massive palace built on four levels.

Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors is a romantic and beautiful living quarter inside the Amer Fort. It was built in the 16th century by King Man Singh. The palace is a glowing example of architectural finesse as well as opulence associated with the royal era of Rajasthan.

The inner walls and roof of Sheesh Mahal is lined with an intricate mosaic of mirrors and glasses. Marble pillars and intricate designs and motifs make the mansion a stunning structure. The glittering Sheesh Mahal charms you with its beauty despite being a shadow of what it was once upon a time. One can only imagine the grandeur and beauty of the place in its heyday.

It must have been an ethereal sight when the palace used to be lit up with earthen lamps whose flames reflected from the thousands of mirrors on the walls and ceiling of the palace. The Sheesh Mahal is one of the most beautiful places in Rajasthan to have pictures clicked.

Tips for visiting Sheesh Mahal, Jaipur

  • Do not miss out on the other interesting palace within the fort called Sukh Niwas. It had an innovative and ingenious cooling system to protect the royal inmates from the intense heat of the desert.

Garh Palace, Bundi, Rajasthan

Painted ceiling of Garh Palace Bundi - one of the lesser-known palaces of India

Garh Palace in Bundi, Rajasthan was first built by Raja Rao Ratan Singh Hada in the early 17th century in the Rajput style. Today, the complex contains three separate palaces built by three different Rajput rulers. Although currently in a state of disrepair due to a dispute over its ownership, the palace contains some of the most extraordinary paintings in all of India.

“Bundi School of Painting” was well-known throughout Rajasthan and has left behind several masterpieces on the walls and ceilings of the palace rooms. Chitrashala, also known as the Ummed Mahal, has some of the best examples of these paintings. Some of the other rooms, such as the king’s bedroom, are kept under lock and key for their protection. But the staff can open them on request.

In addition to the beautiful interiors, look out for the Hathia Pol, another great photo op. It is at the main entrance to the palace and features two elephants in a fighting pose, leaning in at each other over the top of the arch.

Tips for visiting Garh Palace, Bundi

  • Garh Palace is a palace-museum, so it’s not possible to sleep here. But there are lots of good hotels nearby .
  • For dining options, just next to the entrance is Jay Café, whose gregarious owner serves up home-cooked vegetarian and  vegan Indian dishes  in thali style.
  • Bringing food into the palace grounds is not a good idea, as the monkeys here can be aggressive.

Jodha Bai Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh

Jodha Bai Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri

Jodha Bai Mahal is a charming red sandstone palace centrally located in the Fatehpur Sikri complex. This palace was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar for his favourite wife, Jodha Bai, who was a Rajput princess. Also referred to as the Queen of Hindustan, Jodha Bai was the longest serving Hindu-Mughal empress.

Jodha Bai Mahal’s architecture is the confluence of Mughal and Rajputana styles. There are many intricate carvings and designs on the walls of the palace including Hindu motifs like swans, parrots, elephants, and lotuses. The super structure of the palace consists of delicate chhatris, semi-circular domes, and triangular roofs with rich detailing. The palace features numerous rooms, courtyards, gardens, worship hall, pillared walkways and a small lake. All of these give you lots of gram-worthy photo ops.

The City Palace of Udaipur is one of the largest palaces in Rajasthan and a must see on anyone’s Udaipur itinerary . Today, the City Palace is the official residence of the Mewar family. Hence, certain areas are closed to the public. But, luckily the most historic and beautiful parts have become a museum. Jal Mahal, Jaipur, Rajasthan

Contributed by Rose from Where Goes Rose

Jal Mahal Jaipur

Jal Mahal is an iconic Indian palace in Jaipur which gives the appearance that it’s floating upon Man Sagar Lake. For this reason, it’s well-photographed by travelers and an essential stop on any  Jaipur itinerary . The palace is built in the Rajput architectural style with golden stone and symmetrical roof domes.

Jal Mahal has a bizarre history and was initially built as a duck hunting lodge for the Maharajas. The story goes that in the 18th century there was a severe drought in Rajasthan, Man Sagar Lake acted as a vital reservoir, holding the only available drinking water for the people of Jaipur. For several generations, the Maharajas of Jaipur would reinforce the dam to keep the water levels high. As the lake became sacred to the locals, the Maharajas began to use it for leisure and enjoyment. Duck hunting was a favorite hobby and they subsequently built Jal Mahal as a decadent lodge where they could practice the sport.

When the droughts ended and the water levels rose again, the palace flooded and was almost obscured from view. Nowadays, it’s not possible to go inside, but it is possible to view the spectacular palace from the shores.

Tips for viewing Jal Mahal, Jaipur

  • The only palace in the list that you can view from a distance and not visit. The best way to get good pictures is to get to the designated viewing point. Uber cabs and rickshaw drivers will drop you there easily.

Aga Kha Palace, Pune, Maharashtra

Aga Khan Palace Pune India Travel Guide | Stories by Soumya

One of the lesser palaces of India, Aga Khan Palace in the city of Pune is both an architectural and historical treasure trove. Even though I would say the historical bit is a little more significant here because of the palace’s connection with Bapu, the Father of the Nation.

Built in the late 19th century by Aga Khan III, the palace sports a mix of Indo-Saracenic and European architectural styles. It is replete with rose windows, Italian arches, French lawns, and long corridors.

However, Aga Khan Palace assumed a lot of significance during the Quit India Movement in 1942 when Mahatma Gandhi, his wife (Ba), and fellow freedom fighters were imprisoned here. The palace has now been converted into a museum. Different rooms showcase the lives and beliefs of Gandhi and Ba. In the backyard, you will also find the samadhis (tombs) of both of them. Sovabazar Rajbari, Kolkata, West Bengal

Sovabazar Rajbari Kolkata-min

Tracing back the history of Shovabazar Rajbari in North Kolkata is like taking a walk back to the history of erstwhile Calcutta, the nerve center of culture and excellence in British India. Like many other kingdoms, there are intriguing stories of treachery and vanity that ultimately led to the downfall of Calcutta!

300 years ago, Kolkata was officially recognized as one city as Job Charnock bought three adjacent villages, Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata. Sutanuti is the northern part of the city and an abode of heritage till date. This is clearly reflected in the crumbling mansions of the old city, one of which is Shovabazar Rajbari!

The founder of Shovabazar Rajbari, Maharaja Nabakrishna Deb, served the British directly. His fortune and wealth witnessed an overwhelming surge at the fall of Bengal’s last sovereign Nawab because the British favored the Maharaja. To commemorate this event, he started with the celebration of Durgapuja. Thus started the trend of associating the famous Durgapuja festivity of Kolkata with the spirit of celebration.

In fact, today the Sovabazar Rajbari is open for commoners only during the 5 days of Durgapuja. There are two Rajbari (palaces) in Sovabazar, standing one opposite another. One hailed as the Choto Rajbari, the other, as Boro Rajbari. The Thakurdalan (God’s place) is beautifully flanked by pillars, artistic figurines, Belgium glass covering an entire wall, and many other antiques from the heyday.

Tips for visiting Sovabazar Rajbari, Kolkata

  • Best time to visit this quirky royal residence is during Durga Puja because that is the only time when it is open to the public.

Umaid Bhavan Palace in Jodhpur Rajasthan

Umaid Bhavan Palace is located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Apart from being a heritage hotel owned by the Taj Group , the palace is also one of the largest private residences in the world with 340+ rooms where the royal family of Jodhpur resides. Besides the private residence section and the hotel section, the palace has a small museum that is open to visitors. Here relics, jewelry, and photographs of the royal family and an impressive vintage car collection are showcased.

The construction of the Umaid Bhavan palace began in 1929 and was completed in 1943. Even though it was an expensive project, the aim of building this palace was to provide a livelihood to poor farmers of Jodhpur who were affected during a famine in the state. Following the completion of the massive palace that has a throne chamber, various meeting halls, banquet hall, dining halls, ballroom, library, indoor swimming pool, spa, and various tennis and squash courts, the royal family moved in.

A smaller section was given to the Taj group to run a hotel, which was recently in the news as the venue for the wedding of Indian actress Priyanka Chopra to American singer Nick Jonas. While the hotel is for guests only, the museum section is open to visitors on all days between 9am and 5pm with a small entry fee. Paying a visit to this museum is one of the  best things to do in Jodhpur city .

Leh Palace, Leh, Ladakh

View of Leh Town from Leh Palace-min

On the top of Tsemo Hill, overlooking the Himalayan town of Leh, lies the 17 th -century royal residence known as the Leh Palace or Lhachen Palkar . The nine-storied palace is one of its own kind and was the tallest structure in its heyday.

The construction of Leh Palace was initiated in the 16th century by Tsewang Namgyal, founder of the Namgyal Dynasty and was completed by King Sengge Namgyal, the 5 th  king of Ladakh. During the Dogra attack, Leh Palace suffered losses and the royal family moved. Today, the palace stands still but is in battered shape.

Leh Palace is a perfect example of Tibetan architecture. It has nine stories of which Level 1 and 2 are separate from the other levels. The lower floors were storerooms and stables whereas the upper floors functioned as the royal residence. Furnishings are simple and the palace is made of wood, mud, sand, and stone. The uniqueness is in the way the nine floors are laid down on the slanting hill and its buttressed walls.

Tips for visiting Leh Palace

  • Leh Palace is dark from inside and the doors are small. So, mind your head.
  • Wear flat shoes and comfortable clothing. Remove shoes before entering the temple.

Wow so many palaces and they are all so beautiful and breathtaking – Visiting India is high on my bucket list so I am saving this post for when I travel as I definitely want to see some of these places

Hi Laura, you definitely need to visit some of these magnificent palaces when you plan your trip to India. No trip to India is ever complete without getting awed by the resplendence of these beautiful mansions.

Wow! I did not realize that there are a lot of royal palaces in India. So far my favorite is the Vijay Vilas Palace. I have been fascinated with Rajput architecture and it’s interesting to be blended with Bengali influence. Hoping to visit this some time in the future.

One of my favorites too. Such amazing architecture. The palaces of India never cease to inspire me.

This is an incredible collection and really a check list for me. India has such marvelous palaces and such rich history that we all can be so proud of. It amazes me of the architectural mastery that we had as a nation. From your list there are seven palaces that I am yet to visit which I would now for sure. The Leh Palace, Aga Kha Palace Pune & City Palace Udaipur Udaipur would be the first ones that I would love to head to.

Wow! I have always loved our palaces and the history they have. Being a Bangalorean, I am happy to find the Tipu Sultan Palace in the list. The best thing is it is in the city and can be reached so easily. I have always had Rajasthan palaces in my list and I have always wanted to stay in them and that’s probably the reason why i have never been to Rajasthan :D. They are so expensive to stay at but I am sure it will be totally worth staying with the peacocks in the balconies and stunning views of the city. Thanks for this list Soumya, I am bookmarking it as I want to tick off each one of them.

Glad you liked it, Raksha. Even I have not stayed in any of these opulent palaces in Rajasthan but I hope to sometime soon. Will be such an experience!

Ah, what a list of fabulous palaces! The Jal Mahal in Jaipur is definitely the most photogenic one from your list. Sadly, I haven’t seen any of this places. If you would only know how many times I wanted to go see India, but somehow it never worked out for me. Hope to make it there as soon as this pandemic craziness is over!

I know right. One of those trips that never happens! But hopefully someday soon

First of all, as a Tamil, I’m super thrilled to find Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal in your list! That said, I’m super sad that I haven’t been to most of the palaces in your list. When I was in Gujarat, Vijay Vilas Palace in Mandvi was in my itinerary but sadly some last minute changes and we didn’t make it there too. I haven’t heard of Sovabazar Rajbari palace. Thanks for introducing it to me. Leh Palace is definitely to topmost in my list, in this list!

Thanks to all my travel blogger friends, I was able to put together this wonderful list of Indian palaces. And yes Thirumalai Navkar Mahal plays an important role in it. I am glad you liked it. Even I haven’t visited so many of them yet. So many places to see!

India is a fantastic country with so many incredible attractions. One could spend a lifetime in India without having discovered all the hidden gems. It was exciting to read through your article and many of these places I had not heard of before. Thank you for sharing!

That is so true. So many hidden treasures to discover in India. Even I have not visited all these magnificent Indian palaces.

Thank you for sharing such a great blog post highlighting the palaces in India! Each palace holds much beauty in its own unique way. The palace at Jal Mahal, Jaipur, Rajasthan is so breathtaking the way it reflects in the water. I must make it to India to see these palaces someday!

I am glad you liked it Rina. Palaces form such an important part of every Indian itinerary. They reflect such an interesting bit of India’s past. And I agree with you, Jal Mahal is stunningly beautiful.

Wow Soumya this is such an extensive list and so so apt. Yes India has many palaces, thanks to its regal past but these are some exquisite palaces which shine even in the 21st century. I still remember my first visit to Vijay Vilas Palace its murals and domed alleys were so magical and so is Sheesh Mahal in Amer! Still a bit bitter that photography was not allowed in Mysore Palace when I visited but glad that has changed. Loved this post 🙂

Thanks Vaisakhi. These resplendent palaces of India always remind me how beautiful my country is!
