What travelers are saying about our Africa tours

Travel tips for africa trips.

The best time for a trip to Africa depends on what you want to see during your vacation. The temperature is warm year-round, but the seasons affect both weather patterns and animal migrations across the continent. Because Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are opposite those of North America—that means that during the summer months in North America, it’s winter in Africa.

Our Africa tour packages are designed to take you to the best sites at the ideal time of year. In general, you will want to visit Africa during the dry season, which differs from region to region. July through October is the best time for a safari in Tanzania or Kenya, with cooler temps and animal migrations happening across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. African tours that take you to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town are best from April to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for safari game drives or city sightseeing. In the deserts of Morocco and Egypt, the climate is very hot and dry; plan to visit Northern Africa in spring or fall when the weather is most pleasant.

A trip to Africa can mean anything from a wildlife safari to sipping a crisp white wine at a vineyard. When you travel with us, you’ll experience all the best places to visit in Africa alongside an expert Tour Director and local guides—which means you can get the most out of your trip, no matter where you go.

On Safari Tours you’ll experience game drives in wildlife-rich destinations like the Serengeti and Hwange National Park. Snap photos of the Big Five from your safari vehicle, and experience untouched Africa in handpicked hotels that put you at the heart of the action.

If you’re looking for a mix of city and wildlife, one of our Africa guided tours to Cape Town is the perfect fit. Want to visit excellent vineyards and Africa’s best coastal cities? The beaches and vineyards around Cape Town, Knysna, and Port Elizabeth definitely fit the bill.

For Africa tours and travel filled with culture and history, you’ll want to see the Highlights of Morocco or Ancient Egypt . You can explore the Sahara on camelback and browse colorful souks or stand beside the Great Pyramids of Giza and see the Great Sphinx. We make it easy to get closer to local culture and see the important landmarks because our carefully planned itineraries are crafted with these moments in mind.

There is no one dish that defines African cuisine. In Morocco, influences from Mediterranean, Arab, and Andalusian cultures can be found in the range of spices that flavor every meal. Traditional dishes include tagine —a stew made with beef, chicken, or lamb and vegetables—and couscous. Egyptian cuisine is also heavily influenced by Mediterranean flavors, and the Nile Valley produces an abundance of legumes and vegetables. Try shawarma and kebab , two meat dishes that are popular throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East.

In Kenya and Tanzania, cuisine is very tied to what is locally available—depending on where you are, you’ll find very different dishes! On our African tours, meals in your game lodges reflect Britain’s colonial influence. Curries and spicy foods are also popular, thanks to Indian and South Asian immigrants who call the region home.

South African food is called “rainbow cuisine” because of its multicultural influences. South Africa is also a very popular wine region, and produces some of the world’s best white wines.

Our escorted tours to Africa visit many different regions, which means a diverse range of cuisines to try!

On any tours around Africa, expect hot, sunny weather during the day and the chance for cooler temps at night. You’ll want loose-fitting, layered clothing for a range of temperatures, as well as sun protection, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you are traveling in Morocco and Egypt, remember to pack modest clothing that can keep you covered during visits to mosques or other religious sites. You may also want to pack lightweight rainwear, as occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons.

If you are packing for a safari, it’s recommended you wear muted colors to avoid scaring away animals. Safari luggage restrictions are strongly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort aboard safari vehicles. You will need to bring a soft, flexible duffel bag as hard suitcases are not allowed.

Of course, once you’ve reserved your trip to Africa, we’ll send you detailed information about getting ready for your travels—including more packing tips!

I have had two incredible trips with G Adventures. The guides were fantastic, always full of energy and excited to tell you anything specifically of interest to you to make your trip perfect. From the moment I was in touch with Mustafa for our family's trip to Morocco, I knew we were in good hands with Morocco Tours Agency. The suggested tours give you nice starting point on the best sights to see in the country but he was able to add a couple of extra days based on some additional things we wanted to see. It really was a one-stop shop experience from initial booking all the way through the entire trip, Communication was excellent and everything was arranged so quickly for us in a matter of days after initially contacting Mustafa. We stayed in Riads which are lovely little B&Bs located centrally in all the cities with the most amazing hosts and accommodations to make you feel so comfortable, He took into account our family preferences of needing two rooms and dietary considerations at each of the riads, We had Hassan for our driver and from the moment we met him at the airport with his smile and kind nature, we knew we were in good hands for the next 8 days. He educated us on so much culture and history of Morocco and we stopped daily at so many spots along the way for pictures and breaks. There is so much to see in Morocco that you need a wonderful driver to make the long days of driving between the cities go by more enjoyably and we were lucky to have Hassan. We had guided tours in 3 of the cities with knowledgeable and friendly guides who really wanted to share their stories and their country with us. The biggest highlight was definitely going to Merzouga and traveling by camel through the most gorgeous sand dunes to a luxury desert camp for an incredible overnight experience in the desert. We had done little research prior to the trip about Morocco and Mustafa and Hassan really made the trip one of the most relaxing we have ever had since they took care of everything for us and we saw more than we would have if we had planned any of it on our own for sure. I cannot recommend a better tour company than Morocco Tours Agency for an unforgettable adventure in Morocco!

Felucca Odyssey (5 & 4 Star Hotels) Tour

  • Coach / Bus

Felucca Odyssey (5 & 4 Star Hotels)

I liked Mo a lot, and his talks at the sites and on the bus were both interesting and balanced in content and in length. I know that a lot of tourists don't really care for any in-depth discussion of what they are seeing, but Mo was able to answer many of my harder questions with good educated answers. Likewise, he was very efficient in his use of time on the bus and at the sites. I felt that the trip was well constructed and managed, and I rarely had to clarify about our arrangements. He did a good job of telling us ahead of time what to expect. Perhaps one of the most crucial arrangements that Mo managed was the seamless embarkation/disembarkation of the sleeper trains in Cairo, Aswan and Luxor. There is a LOT going on with that, and I was impressed how he managed to keep all 30+ of us on-target in a busy and chaotic environment. No bags or people were lost! Another case that sticks out is his handling of the myriad of different tour packages, transfers, and hotel arrangements that occurred. I understand that this is all “part of the job”, but I nevertheless think it is a very important part of what makes a good tour guide. Mo handled this very nicely. Yes, I would travel with Mo again, and that's the substance of a good review I think! Thaddeus

It was amazing trip! Everything was well organised and fun. I definitely recommend this tour.

What people love about Africa Tours

This is an excellent tour but it's certainly not relaxing! We had 2 brilliant leaders who were very knowledgable and looked after us very, very well. Very long days, only occasionally did we reach our overnight accommodation with time spare to relax/swim. Lots of like-minded travelling companions, many of whom had done several GAdventure tours in the past and all of them were very good company.
Amazing experience. Everything was pretty much perfect minus some minor defects on the vehicle (air conditioning vents being placed poorly such that items in the overhead bins always covered them, usb chargers being placed such that they dig into your leg and take away a lot of leg room).
Mina was an absolutely amazing guide! Would definitely recommend!! :)

Destination Must-See's

Africa Continent ms1

‘The Big 5’:

A trip to Africa is not complete without experiencing a wildlife safari. Safaris allow you to get up close to the wild animals where they live and feed. You will be going on the search for the illusive ‘Big Five’ game: the African lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and the Cape buffalo. They are nicknamed the ‘big five’ because they are the most difficult animals to catch. On safari you will not only witness a wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat, but you will also be surrounded by beautiful scenery and stunning landscapes as well.

Africa Continent ms2

Cosmopolitan Cities:

The continent is home to many great port cities that sit along the shores of the stunning seas and thriving economic centres of business that boast rich histories reaching back thousands of years. From Cape Town and Johannesburg, the most populous and dynamic cities in South Africa, to Casablanca and Fes in Morocco, where contemporary art and culture scenes thrive along ancient traditions.

Africa Continent ms3

Luxor, Egypt:

Luxor is often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum. Travellers have visited this city, parted by the Nile River, for centuries. Even the Greeks and Romans would journey to see the treasures that lie here. Its immense number of monuments is incredible. There’s the famous Valley of the Kings, which boasts 63 royal tombs, one even more elabourate than the next
and Karnak, a vast complex of temples and gigantic statues including the Temple of Amun, known to be the largest religious building ever constructed. Luxor will bring you back to ancient times while you are awed by the wealth of its leaders and the skill of its people.

Africa Continent ms4

Victoria Falls:

This powerful cascade is spectacular. At one mile wide and 360 feet high, it is the largest waterfall in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa, the Falls lie along the Zambezi River. Game-viewers, bird-watchers, thrill-seekers and fishermen flock here to explore the Falls and surrounding pristine wilderness protected by the Zambezi National Park.

Destination Must-Do's

Africa Continent md1

Sleep in the Sahara Desert:

Covering over 3 million square miles of northern Africa, the Sahara is said to encompass a staggering 10% of the African continent. Scientists believe that the Sahara Desert has been inhabited since 6000 B.C. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Europeans are just some of its former residents. Today, the population is around 4 million and consists mainly of nomads who move from place to place as a result of the harsh conditions. Over time, the wind, heat and dry weather has created a tapestry of stunning landscapes that include sand dunes, sand seas (called ergs), barren stone plateaus, gravel plains and salt flats.

Africa Continent md2

Explore the Markets:

Souks or local markets immerse you in the culture of the people. No matter where you are, you will find busy aisles lined with vendors selling many types of products – rugs, jewellery, metals, wood and pottery, clothing, leather goods and fresh food.

Africa Continent md3

Cruise the Nile River:

Along the banks of Africa’s longest river sits bustling bazaars that lie in the shadow of Ancient pyramids and temples. Located among the cliffs on the west bank of the Nile is the Valley of the Kings, home to the tombs of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. The tombs were built here over a period of almost 500 years. There are 63 tombs in the valley, 26 of them carved for kings, and the others were carved for royal family members.

Africa Continent md4

Vineyards of South Africa:

South Africa has some really great wine. Discover the beauty of the rolling green hills in the heart of the winelands region and take in the colourful mountains and vineyards that seem to go on for days. Don’t forget to taste some of that delicious stuff while you’re there!

Testimonials

Our sincere thanks the AWS team for making our trip to Zimbabwe more a life experience than a holiday. This was our first journey overseas since Covid and it was perfect from the smallest detail to the amazing experiences which will stay in our memories forever. We have been travelling through Africa with your advice, support and guidance for more than 20 years and this latest adventure in the Zimbabwean bush confirms our view that you and your team are the very best in the business.
Our experience with African Wildlife Safaris and our consultant Michael was overwhelmingly positive.  Our travel between camps was all seamless and well organised.  The camps he advised us to visit were all varied and fantastic in their own ways including: the staff, food and our personal guides.  The stars of the show were the game drives with the animals we saw from the smallest mongoose to the biggest elephant and everything in between.  We had such a great time.  This was our first safari and it was beyond our expectations big thanks to Michael and AWS.

Welcome to Africa

African landscapes parading with the circle of life promise magical moments unlike any you have imagined before. You'll find them...

Mountain gorillas in rwanda, a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with endangered mountain gorillas... on safari in rwanda with tauck.

On two safaris in wildlife-rich game reserves in Tanzania and Kenya, you'll spend the last three nights of your journey in Rwanda – home to the last remaining mountain gorillas on Earth. After gaining insights on gorilla behavior at private lectures and a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum, you'll be ready to begin your gorilla trek. Imagine hiking into the wilderness with a private porter and an expert guide for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with mountain gorillas in the wild
watching them interact with each other – and, if they so choose, perhaps with you!

Africa's "Big Five"

Meet the "big five".

Lions (Panthera leo) are often seen in Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya), Serengeti & Tarangire national parks, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania). Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) can weigh as much as 1,500 lbs. – big and dangerous enough to keep most predators at bay. Buffalo roam the Sabi Sands Game Reserve (South Africa) and Serengeti National Park (Tanzania). black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) may be spotted in Ngorongoro Crater and the Masai Mara. leopards (Panthera pardus) are prevalent in most parks and reserves in east and southern Africa; you'll often need to look up to spot one... since they spend much of their time in trees. African Elephant (Loxodonta africana), the world's largest land mammal, is a fixture throughout the Masai Mara, as well as Amboseli and Serengeti national parks. Although they are not among the "Big Five," a gorilla trek in Rwanda is one of life's memorable experiences.

Namibia: Epic Safari

Starlit skies, desert dunes, game reserves and wildlife safaris.

Embark on an epic 11-day journey to Namibia, home to desert landscapes alive with oryx, bat-eared foxes, zebras, lizards and more. Explore the red-tinted dunes of Sossusvlei. Star gaze in one of the naturally darkest places on earth. Enjoy a hands-on personal encounter with baby baboons. A truly unforgettable adventure in every way.

Dinner in the desert, Berber-style

Travel by 4x4 vehicle to a berber-style dinner in a desert camp.

In the desert outside Marrakech, ancient Berber villages preserve time-honored folkways and rituals – like the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony – that have survived for centuries. Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Historic Safari Lodges... Legendary Hotels...

South Africa Tours & Vacations

Silhouette of African safari scene with giraffe, elephant, rhino, and vehicle at sunset

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a clichĂ©

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid, but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavours and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travellers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavoursome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavoured with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaux of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travellers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalised and treated poorly by their European colonisers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalised. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

Top 10 places of South Africa

This quaint seaside town located on South Africa’s Garden Route is one of the most photogenic in Africa. Whether you’re snapping the boats in the harbour, the dolphins frolicking in the waves or the wild and rocky coast, it’s hard not to snap Knysna in a good light.

Fans of street art will love capturing the murals and memorials of spirited Soweto. The gritty urban landscapes and candid faces make it simple to capture the soul of this endearing, inspiring community.

6. Cape Town

Easily one of the most picturesque cities in the world, Cape Town has some of the most photo-worthy landscapes in the world. From breathtaking Table Mountain to the stunning coast and beautiful beaches, Cape Town has profound natural beauty coming at you from every angle.

Sure, Durban’s beaches are special but the interesting mix of Indian, Muslim, African and European influences makes for great photography. Durban’s cultural cornucopia of markets, mosques and galleries offers rich fodder for snap-happy travellers looking to capture a different side of Africa.

8. Lamberts Bay

The tremendously large colony of Cape Gannet birds who live off Lamberts Bay is often photographed - and with good reason. The sight of hundreds of birds tightly packed into a small space against a backdrop of azure ocean provides a unique, snap-worthy photo subject.

9. Blyde River Canyon

This canyon is every bit as stunning as America’s Grand Canyon, yet in a different way. Lush greenery grows over most of the area and a diverse range of animal and plant life is supported within its deep cliffs and valleys. It’s difficult to take a bad photo here, as Mother Nature has kindly provided a near perfect canvas.

10. Kruger National Park

This iconic national park has some of the ‘most-photographed’ animals in the world. Visitors love capturing shots of lions hunting prey, elephants drinking at waterholes and cheetahs sleeping under trees. Mesmerising amber sunsets and rolling savanna only add to the atmospheric magic of it all.

Highlights of South Africa

Visit Durban on our 9 day Kruger & Coast tour, on our 22 day Kruger, Coast & Cape tour or on our 14 day Garden Route Adventure .

2. Johannesburg

Feel the buzz of urban Africa in Joburg, South Africa's largest city. Check out the cultural hotspots of Newtown, Braamfontein or Maboneng; learn about the country's sobering past at the Apartheid Museum, or venture outside the city to the Cradle of Humankind to see some of the oldest fossilized hominid remains on Earth. Explore Johannesburg on our 11 day Kruger & Cape Town Short Break or on our 18 day Explore Southern Africa tour.

3. Cape Town

Be captivated by the beautiful coast-meets-mountain landscapes of Cape Town. Let the beauty of Cape Town overwhelm you on our 16 day Experience Southern Africa tour.

4. Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch wine region is the place to be to sample the country's most delicious drops. Surrounded by lush orchards and rugged mountains, it's a beautiful place to soak up the scenery while enjoying a glass (or two) of the region’s world-class reds. Drink up on our 5 day Cape Town and Winelands tour.

5. Kruger National Park

Welcome to one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa. Home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species (including the Big Five and the endangered African wild dog), you have a pretty good chance of spotting some of South Africa's resident wildlife while on safari here. Go wildlife spotting on our 9 day Vic Falls to Kruger adventure.

From the provincial markets of sleepy towns, through the malls of Johannesburg and to the galleries and cafes of Cape Town, there are many options for parting with money in South Africa. From budget market souvenirs to more indulgent bespoke buys, visitors will be pleased with the variety on offer here.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in South Africa

1. Zulu beads

Zulu beadwork acts as a form of communication for Zulu people but visitors are usually drawn to buy beads for their vibrancy and visual appeal. Necklaces, bracelets and head pieces are particularly popular.

2. Township art

This urban art form involves recycling common landfill items like soft drink cans, telephone wire, paper and tyres, and turning them into jewellery, ornaments, key rings, bags and toys. Township art makes a unique souvenir or gift as it supports local artists and keeps excess waste out of landfill.

3. Gourmet goodies

The Cape area has loads of amazing providores and food producers, so this is the best place to stock up on chutneys, jams and preserves made from local mango, fig, oranges and grapes.

4. Rooibos products

This caffeine-free herbal tea has been drunk in South Africa for generations, and is a cheap souvenir option for friends and family back home. You will also be able to find rooibos skincare and beauty products too.

Festivals and events

This national public holiday commemorates the anniversary of South Africa’s constitution democracy – a very important sentiment to Africans living in the post-apartheid world. Marked by military flyovers, song, dance and other entertainment, this is a time of celebration, peace and unity.

Cape Town Jazz Festival

Cape Town shines with two days of hot jazz performances from African entertainers at this very popular festival. Although many of the shows sell out well in advance, the free outdoor concert ensures no one misses out.

Knysna Oyster Festival

This annual festival held over 10 days in winter offers so much more than oysters. Sure, indulge in some oysters but don’t forget about the fun runs, marathons, wine tastings, eating competitions, live music and cooking demos.

Is tipping customary in South Africa?

It's considered polite to tip service workers in South Africa, as most receive a small wage. As a general rule, add 10-15% to bills at cafes, bars and restaurants (if it hasn’t already been added). Tour guides, drivers, valets and porters also should be tipped (5-10 ZAR should be sufficient).

What is the internet access like in South Africa?

Travellers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of South Africa’s large cities but limited to no access should be expected in rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in South Africa?

Cell phone coverage is very good in South Africa’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone. However a cheaper option may be to buy a sim card at the airport and purchase a plan with both calls and data.

What are the toilets like in South Africa?

South Africa is modern country with mostly flushable toilets. However, areas like national parks and villages may have squat toilets.

Can I drink the water in South Africa?

Tap water can be drunk in South Africa’s cities, however drinking tap water in rural areas isn't recommended. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in South Africa?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels, modern shops and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in South Africa?

There are many ATMs in the big cities and regional towns of South Africa. Rural areas, national parks and small villages will have limited to no ATMs, so be sure to carry other payment options before travelling out of the big cities.

What's the transport like in South Africa?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in South Africa, you may find yourself travelling by:

Overland Vehicle

Journey through some of the world’s most famous national parks aboard a customized safari vehicle, specifically designed to enhance wildlife viewing opportunities – you won’t miss a thing.

What's the accommodation like in South Africa?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in South Africa you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Experience the ultimate in African hospitality while staying with a local family in Zululand. Pick up some local language, be exposed to new customs and sample traditional cuisine on a homestay to remember.

Does my trip to South Africa support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to South Africa directly support our foundation partner, Helping Rhinos.

Helping Rhinos

Helping Rhinos work alongside expert conservationists to create and expand ecosystems where sustainable populations of rhinos, and other critically endangered wildlife, can thrive. Donations from our trips support their all-female ranger program – the Black Mambas – which focuses on anti-poaching activities such as destroying traps, conducting routine vehicle stop-and-searches, installing camera traps and early warning technology, and monitoring suspicious activity.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

RVC 2024: 4 things I learned about Canada on Day 1 of its tourism marketplace

Where do canadians and canada-lovers rendezvous at rendez-vous canada, of course  canada’s premier tourism industry event, also known as rvc (because travel loves an acronym) has opened its doors (and arms) to the international travel trade. karryon is on location in edmonton, alberta to share the news as it happens. .

RVC 2024: 4 things I learned about Canada on Day 1 of its tourism marketplace

P&o cruises comes to the aid of stranded aussie rotary volunteers in vanuatu, karryon's top 10 stories of the week: catch up on our most-wanted: may 17, cruising made easier: itravel integrates cruise bookings on ‘hq’ platform.

Here’s what we know so far:

1. Canadians know how to throw a party

RVC 2024 kicked off in the shadow of the majestic Fairmont Macdonald in the heart of downtown Edmonton. Overlooking the North Saskatchewan River Valley, guests were fed and entertained in true Canadian warmth, care of Accor and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada .

Social media sensation Notorious Cree and his dancers wowed the crowd with a fusion of traditional Indigenous and contemporary dance, while Vancouver-based DJ Kookum provided the evening’s soundtrack, and MĂ©tis Child and Family Jiggers showed off their footwork.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Karryon: Together in Travel (@karryontravelling)

2. Hockey is serious business

Hosting RVC when your hockey team is in the play-offs is surely the best way to sell Canada! After the opening party, guests found themselves pulled into the drama of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The nearby Ice District outside of Rogers Place was the best place to take in the atmosphere when the Edmonton Oilers took on (and beat, in a nail-bitingly close finish) the Vancouver Canucks.

Some of us may not have understood the rules, but we all felt the energy and may have instantly become Oilers fans.

3. Sustainability actually means something

RVC 2024 is committed to sustainability by promoting and supporting environmental, economic and community stewardship.

By reducing single-use disposable items, reducing paper and energy consumption, supporting local/small businesses, and reducing food waste where possible, RVC 2024 took real steps to support sustainable event management.

Attendees are also being encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, explore the city by foot, support local nearby businesses, and explore the River Valley!

4. It’s a numbers thing

  • This is the 48th RVC!
  • There are more than 1,400 attendees at the show this year.
  • Over the conference, there will be more than 55,000 one-on-one appointments, exclusive breakfasts and networking opportunities enjoyed by attendees.
  • More than 400 buyers and media from Destination Canada’s key markets are here to meet with over 900 tourism industry delegates from more than 482 Canadian organisations.

Stay tuned for more Canada news live from Edmonton, Alberta.
