Ian likely to have severe impact on Florida air travel

air travel florida

Hurricane Ian’s landfall could affect travel plans for anyone trying to fly in and out of the Sunshine State in the coming days, even though it doesn’t appear that South Florida will get the worst of the storm.

Flights at Palm Beach International Airport on Monday saw few cancellations and delays, but that may change this week.

Airlines report they are moving several planes from Florida to hubs like Charlotte and Atlanta to protect their jetliners.

At PBIA, that may result in more flight cancellations or delays as the storm nears Florida.

Some airlines are emailing and texting passengers to notify them that they can change their flights without fees, allowing them to change their plans before or after the storm.

American Airlines passenger Janet Kastl already extended her stay but was headed back to Seattle ahead of Hurricane Ian.

"I was going to leave last week, and the push alert simply said they were expecting weather and the flight could be delayed or canceled or rescheduled," Kastl said.

WFLX talked with a travel agent who said passengers who have their flights canceled because of the storm may have a difficult time finding a flight out of town.

  • Frequently Asked Questions on Travel During Hurricane Season
  • You are here:
  • Crisis Preparation

Provided below are answers to questions frequently asked by visitors traveling in or with plans to travel to Florida during hurricane season. It is important to note that a direct hit to a particular destination anywhere in the state by a major hurricane is a rare event. Floridians have learned to prepare for these storms and respect their impact potential.

Florida Emergency Management and VISIT FLORIDA Information Resources

  • VISIT FLORIDA travel advisories on www.VISITFLORIDA.com
  • General hurricane media inquiries: media line, Florida Division of Emergency Management/State Emergency Response Team, (850) 921-0217
  • Tourism-related media inquiries: [email protected]
  • VISIT FLORIDA Partners and businesses in the Florida tourism industry: [email protected]
  • General tourism information: VISIT FLORIDA consumer hotline, 888-735-2872

Where can I get real-time advisories for hurricanes/tropical storms? Travel advisories at www.VISITFLORIDA.com provide visitors with real-time information from local tourism officials and links to advisories from these state and national sources:

What months are considered hurricane season? The Atlantic hurricane season is officially June 1 to November 30 . The peak of the season is from mid-August to mid-October.

What is a hurricane? A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with a defined circulation and sustained winds of 74 miles per hour (65 knots) or greater in the North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern North Pacific Ocean. This same tropical cyclone is known as a typhoon in the western Pacific and a cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

What is the difference between a tropical storm watch, tropical storm warning, hurricane watch and hurricane warning? The National Hurricane Center in Miami has the responsibility for monitoring and issuing watches and warnings in the Atlantic and Northeast basins. A tropical storm watch is issued when tropical storm conditions, including winds from 39-73 mph, pose a possible threat to a specified coastal area within 48 hours, and a warning when tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours or less. A hurricane watch is issued when hurricane conditions are expected within 48 hours, and a warning when a hurricane with sustained winds of 74 mph or higher is expected in a specified coastal area in 36 hours or less. If a warning or watch is issued, visitors should begin preliminary preparations for potential landfall and stay tuned to radio and TV for official weather and evacuation updates.

Should we cancel travel plans during hurricane season? VISIT FLORIDA clearly understands that some people have concerns about the possible impact a hurricane could have on a planned vacation. It is always wise when making travel plans during hurricane season to check with airlines, hotels, car rental companies, etc. to find out how they inform their guests when a hurricane is approaching, what actions they plan to take, and what refund policies they have in place. Once again, it is important to point out that a direct hit to any one particular destination by a major hurricane is an extremely rare event.

What do travelers do if they are in Florida and a hurricane is approaching? The safety of Florida's visitors is a priority to everyone who works in the tourism industry. VISIT FLORIDA works closely with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, local tourism offices throughout the state, as well as local, state and national media to ensure visitors have access to accurate and timely information that will help them make the most informed travel planning decisions possible. Visitors are encouraged to go to VISITFLORIDA.com to follow the latest weather and travel updates, in addition to staying tuned to local television and radio stations. If visitors are asked to evacuate from coastal areas, please follow the instructions of the emergency response officials.

How are hurricane categories determined? What do they mean? The strength of hurricanes is rated using the Saffir/Simpson scale in the United States. This scale assigns a storm to one of five categories based on its wind speed. Category one is a minimal hurricane and category five is the strongest. Using this scale helps estimate the potential property damage and expected coastal flooding from a hurricane.

Categories are determined by Maximum Sustained Winds as follows:

  • Category 1. 74-95 mph
  • Category 2. 96-110 mph
  • Category 3. 111-130 mph
  • Category 4. 131-155 mph
  • Category 5. 156+ mph

What is a tropical disturbance? A tropical disturbance is an organized system of clouds and thunderstorms without a defined circulation.

What is a tropical depression? A tropical depression is an organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a circular wind circulation and maximum sustained winds less than 39 mph.

What is a tropical storm? A tropical storm is an organized system of strong thunderstorms with defined circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.

What regions around the globe have hurricanes? Hurricanes develop over tropical or subtropical waters around the world. There are seven tropical cyclone areas (basins) where storms occur:

  • Atlantic basin (North Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea)
  • Northeast Pacific basin (from Mexico to the dateline)
  • Northwest Pacific basin (from the dateline to Asia)
  • North Indian basin (including the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea)
  • Southwest India basin (Africa)
  • Southeast Indian/Australian basin
  • Australian/Southwest Pacific basin

What is the "eye" of the storm? What are rain bands? The hurricane's core is called the "eye." The winds closest to the eye, typically averaging about 60 miles from the center of the storm, are the strongest and bring the most potential for damage. Rain bands, or outer spiral bands, are the bands of clouds and thunderstorms that trail away from the eye wall in a spiral fashion and are capable of producing heavy bursts of rain and wind. The spiral bands also make hurricanes appear to cover a much larger area with damaging winds than they really do. This is the reason why damage during strong storms does not cover the entire area the storm passes over.

Why are hurricanes named? Who names them? The National Hurricane Center is responsible for naming tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin. Hurricanes are named to provide ease of communication and reduce confusion between forecasters and the general public regarding forecasts, watches and warnings.

In what ways do hurricanes and tropical storms actually help Florida's environment? According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, hurricanes and tropical storms:

  • Help to scrub harmful algae from coral reefs
  • Prune dead limbs from trees allowing sunlight to penetrate the forest floor
  • Deposit sand atop and on the backside of barrier islands, which elevates them, keeping islands from becoming a sand bar
  • Moderate global temperature
  • Produce rain that helps refill the aquifer
  • Increases the water flow in natural springs
  • Rehydrates dried out wetlands that benefit wildlife
  • Downed trees are good for the scrub jays, increasing the endangered species' habitat.

WELCOME TO MYFLIGHT FORECAST™

MyFlight Forecast™ gives you, the passenger, and access to Flying Weather Forecast data that pilots will review prior to every flight. While a pilot will review much more data, data that they've spent years learning to interpret, this site breaks down the most relevant data for the passenger to determine flight conditions, potential flight and airport delays, and most importantly, flight turbulence forecast.

Weather Radar

Reference Weather Radar to determine the location of precipitation (Snow, Rain) and where it is located relative to your flight path. Pilot Tip - Just because you see areas of precipitation, does not mean that you will necesarily be flying through it! You might be miles above it!

Satellite Imagery

Reference the Satellite page to locate clouds, or areas of decreased visibility. While clouds can generally increase the likelihood of turbulence while flying through them, keep in mind, clouds are just moisture, or water. Water is generally not that scary. Not all clouds that appear on the satellite imagery can guarantee areas of turbulence, it greatly depends on the stability of the atmosphere.

Turbulence Forecast

Get your Flying Weather Forecast before and during your flight - receive real time turbulence reports and discover where turbulence has been reported by aircraft currently in-flight

Airport Delays

Allegiant launches new Florida flights out of Bismarck

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — There’s a new way to get away out of Bismarck.

On Wednesday afternoon, Allegiant Air launched its new service to the St. Pete-Clearwater Airport in Florida.

The flights start at $60 to book and they take off and return on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Allegiant has been providing service to Bismarck since 2004, but this is the second destination to Florida, in addition to Orlando.

Bismarck airport director Greg Haug says he expects travelers to St. Pete will include both vacationing families and retirees.

“They say west of Mississippi,” he explained, “those folks go down to the southwest, and when you get east of the Mississippi, they go down to Florida. We’re pretty close to the Mississippi — it’s just over in Minnesota — so we have a certain community of interest from our region that is interested in Florida.”

Allegiant also offers flights out of Bismarck to Phoenix/Mesa and Las Vegas.

Watch: Passengers evacuate a Delta jet in Seattle after fire breaks out

air travel florida

A Delta Air Lines plane appears to have caught fire after landing in Seattle on May 6, forcing an evacuation.

  • Video of the incident shows smoke and a bright light in the nose area of the Airbus A321neo.
  • Delta has not yet confirmed the source of the fire, but its investigation is currently focusing on the ground power unit.

Video of the incident shows smoke and a bright light in the nose area of the Airbus A321neo, and passengers exiting the aircraft via emergency slides.

“During deplaning on the evening of May 6, the crew of Flight 604 from Cancun to Seattle witnessed smoke in the aircraft nose area after plugging into ground electrical power. Out of an abundance of caution, slides were deployed and passengers still on board deplaned via the rear of the aircraft,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Passengers were fully evacuated, and those deplaned to the ramp returned to the terminal via the ramp stairs. All passengers exited to customs in the International Arrivals Facility for regular processing. The aircraft has been removed from service for inspection and maintenance.”

According to Delta, the plane involved in the incident was less than two years old. The airline and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident.

Delta said it has not yet confirmed the source of the fire, but its investigation is currently focusing on the ground power unit, not the airplane itself.

Video of the evacuation also shows many passengers exiting the aircraft with their belongings, which is against most safety guidelines. Luggage and other accessories can slow down an evacuation and can result in avoidable injury or deaths.

This Is When Traffic Will Be Worst for Memorial Day Weekend, According to AAA

Time to start planning for the holiday.

More than 43 million Americans are expected to travel for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and a record number of those will hit the roads, making it essential travelers plan their road trips ahead.

In total, 43.8 million travelers are forecast to travel 50 miles or more from their homes, according to AAA , representing a 4 percent increase compared to last year. Of those, 38.4 million are expected to travel by car, the highest number for the Memorial Day holiday weekend since AAA started tracking data in 2000.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

When it comes to road trips , most people are expected to pile into their cars on Thursday, May 23, and on Friday, May 24. Drivers hoping to avoid the worst traffic should set out super early to avoid competing with commuters, according to AAA. Those coming home on Sunday or Monday should similarly avoid the afternoon hours.

Overall, the best time to hit the road on Thursday is before 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m., while the best time to travel on Friday is before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m. On Sunday, the best travel time to avoid congestion is before 1 p.m., while travelers are best off leaving after 7 p.m. on Monday.

Not all cities will see the same traffic, of course. The Tampa, Florida, area is expected to see one of the biggest traffic increases with up to an 88 percent bump in traffic on Sunday morning along I-75 S, while the Los Angeles area is expected to see up to an 84 percent increase in traffic on Thursday evening along I-5 N.

Beyond roads, more than 3.5 million travelers are expected to take to the skies, leading to crowded airports — the most crowded since 2005. These Memorial Day weekend air travel numbers represent a 4.8 percent increase compared to last year and a 9 percent increase compared to 2019.

An additional 1.9 million travelers are forecast to use other transportation like buses, cruises , and trains . That’s a 5.6 percent increase compared to last year, according to AAA.

“Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways,” Twidale said.
