Seafront promenade in Fuengirola (Malaga, Andalusia)

Located on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is a city with a rich Andalusian flavour which offers an extensive stretch of coastline covered with magnificent beaches.

Possessing a long tourist tradition, this town in the province of Málaga has a wide range of services and infrastructure, which includes golf courses, riding centres, leisure parks, hotel complexes and restaurants, not forgetting a significant calendar of cultural events. Along with it, Fuengirola has managed to preserve a great many remains left behind by the peoples who inhabited the city in ancient times, such as the Roman baths and villa or the Arab castle of Sohail . Any one of its many restaurants and pavement cafés provides the opportunity to sample the local cuisine, whose star product is fish .

Fuengirola sits on a narrow strip of coastline covering 8 kilometres which has a succession of some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol. Los Boliches , Fuengirola, La Campana , Torreblanca, Las Gaviotas ...well-cared for stretches of sand backed by a long and busy promenade where you'll find residential complexes, hotels, restaurants and other services so you can enjoy the sun and sea in comfort. Sports fans have a wide range of possibilities in Fuengirola. Those who prefer golf will find the town and the surrounding area has some twenty magnificent 18-hole courses which allow the golfer to play year-round. The racetrack and other riding schools from neighbouring Mijas provide excellent facilities for taking up or perfecting the equestrian arts. It is also possible to play tennis in any of the area's clubs. Water sports are especially important in Fuengirola. The coastline has beautiful sea depths which make scuba diving , a sport which can be learned in any of the town's diving schools , particularly attractive. The marina , located next to the fishing port, provides modern facilities for navigation, as well as other water sports, such as sailing or scuba diving. Lastly, outdoor pursuits in the province have the perfect setting inland, where there are a great many routes suitable for hiking , as well as routes on horseback or by bicycle. But Fuengirola provides many other leisure possibilities for all ages. You can visit the Zoo , enjoy an unforgettable day at the water park or tour Sohail Fluvial Park , an extensive and modern recreational area crossed by a navigable canal measuring 800 metres in length. Or if you prefer, you can attend one of the cultural events which are staged in the Municipal Arts Centre or the modern Peace Centre .

The town centre

Fuengirola preserves witin its streets corners full of local colour and charm. Dominating the centre of town is Constitution Square (19th century), where the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario stands. On top of a nearby hill, located next to the mouth of the river Fuengirola, stands the Castle of Sohail , ordered to be built by Abd-al-Rahman III in the 10th century and which still preserves some paintings of its walls. Next to this parade ground, the remains of the old Phoenician settlement have been found, which was the origin of the town (6th-3rd centuries BC). Testimony of the city's importance in the past is the Roman city of Suel , located on the hillside of the castle. Other Roman remains appear in the archaelogical sites of Finca del Secretario and Torreblanca , where there is a Roman baths and a Visigoth necropolis. Fuengirola also has neighbourhoods full of local colour, such as Santa Fe de los Boliches , deeply-rooted to the sea, or Pueblo López , which has streets crammed with beautiful examples of Andalusian popular architecture.

Gastronomy, festivals and surrounding area

As occurs in other towns on the Costa del Sol, the gastronomy of Fuengirola is characterized by the central role given to fish, cooked on the grill or salted, not forgetting the emblematic fried fish and sardines on the spit (grilled). Also traditional are "ajoblanco con uvas" (a cold soup with almonds, oil, garlic and grapes) and "gazpacho" (made from tomatoes, pepper, bread, oil and garlic). The entire province is well-known for its excellent wines labelled under the Designation of Origin Málaga standard, among which the sweet wines are most prominent. Among the most anticipated events of the year in Fuengirola is its festival in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario , patron of the town, which has as its main stage at the festival ground and which is held from 6 to 12 October. In July, the festival of the Virgen del Carmen takes place in the district of Los Boliches, and the Festival of the Castle is held, declared to be of tourist interest. From Fuengirola it is possible to visit other towns on the Costa del Sol. A few kilometres inland are mountain towns such as Mijas , with its typically Andalusian houses, and Alhaurín el Grande , where the church of la Encarnación and the palace of Montellano are outstanding. In the coastal area are Marbella, Torremolinos and Benalmádena , towns with a deep-rooted tourist tradition which provide outstanding infrastructure. Those who prefer to enjoy nature will find the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Reserve to be one of the best-protected spaces in the whole province.

ESSENTIAL Fuengirola Tourist Guide: BEST Things to Do & See

Table of Contents

Fuengirola is a tourist resort located on the Costa del Sol in Spain.

Fuengirola dates back as far as the Phoenicians and also played a role in Roman and Arabic civilisations.

Today a Moorish Castle still stands in Fuengirola. Fuengirola is also home to more than eight kilometres of beaches.

Are you an expat in Fuengirola? What do you like/dislike about it? Let us know in the comments box at the bottom of the page.

Where is Fuengirola?

Fuengirola is located on the Costa del Sol to the south of the tourist resorts of Benalmadena and Torremolinos yet lies to the north of glitzy, ritzy Marbella. There are two airports within a relatively short distance to the resort which are Gibraltar Airport and Malaga Airport.

Fuengirola is 20 km west of Malaga along the coast towards Marbella. Fuengirola is very well located – only 20 minutes drive from the major international airport of Malaga with its huge choice of flights to destinations all over Europe.

Fuengirola is blessed with a good transport infrastructure and there are numerous bus and train services running daily between the resort and Malaga Airport. You can also hire a car for the duration of your holiday.

By car Fuengirola is just off the major roads of N340 or the A7 autoroute. Fuengirola has a regular bus service to and from Malaga airport and also Malaga city centre. Moreover, Fuengirola has a train service to Malaga city centre.

What is Fuengirola Like?

Fuengirola is very much a massive, sprawling high-rise tourist resort comparable to mass tourist resorts such as Benidorm on the Costa Blanca and fellow  Costa del Sol resorts such as Torremolinos and Benalmadena .

There are lots of facilities and amenities here and plenty of nightlife, but for a more traditional taste of Spain head elsewhere!

Is Fuengirola near Benidorm?

People who like Fuengirola would totally love Benidorm but they are not remotely close. Benidorm is far away on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast which is a distance of 543 km and a drive time of 5 hours and 17 minutes. If you want more bars and clubs try Benalmadena, Marbella or Torremolinos instead.

What to See and Do in Fuengirola

If you wish to see what the Fuengirola market has to offer then you can head for the Los Boliches fairground on a Tuesday or a Saturday while on a Sunday you can browse for antiques at the marina.

A few blocks from the resort centre is the Fuengirola Zoo which is one of the most modern in Europe. The Tivoli World amusement park in neighbouring Benalmadena will keep children occupied for many hours as it closes daily in the summer months at two in the morning.

To experience a Flamenco Show you can head for the Parque Miramar Shopping and Leisure Centre where every Wednesday evening the Flamenco Azabache gives a free tourist show.

The Parque Miramar Shopping and Leisure Centre is one of the largest shopping centres on the Costa del Sol and is home to all the Spanish high street stores such as Zara, Springfield, Massimo Dutti, Mango as well as C&A and H&M. There are also multi-cinema screens, bars, restaurants and free parking for as many as 3500 cars.

To see for yourself what Fuengirola has to offer, why not look at a  webcam of Fuengirola .

Hostels (Hostals)

If you are looking for accommodation on a budget then consider staying at a youth hostel. Hostels (also known as hostals) are a very cheap form of accommodation traditionally appealing to backpackers and students although anyone can of course be accommodated.

Hostal Galan – “Our hostel is newly opened and we have low prices (15 Euro / person / night). We rent rooms both daily and monthly. Our hostel is located in the heart of Fuengirola on a quiet pedestrian street near the beach. The hostel is situated behind the beautiful “Plaza de la Constitution” with fine restaurants, pubs and garages, close to making every visit a pleasure.”

Hostal Nevada is located in the center of Los Boliches in Fuengirola. All the services are located near by, included train station, bus stops and plenty of shops. The beautiful beach of los Boliches is just 400 m from the hostel.

Hostal Nevada Address: Calle Santa Gema 1, Fuengirola, Spain 29640. Telephone: (+34) 952468305.

Another popular way to spend a vacation in Fuengirola is to rent an apartment. Many of the apartment complexes are within easy walking distance to the beaches and the most recommended apartment complexes include the Fuengirola Beach Apartments and the Veramar Apartments.

Of course there are also many Fuengirola villas to rent, most of which are located on urbanisations such as campo Mijas and Las Acacias a few minutes away by car from the resort centre and beaches. Here you can expect to rent a 3-bedroom villa with swimming pool and air conditioning for approximately €1000 a week.

There are three golf courses within a short drive of the resort centre which are the El Chaparral Golf Club, Club de Golf Mijas and the Torrequebrada Golf Course.

Just outside Fuengirola are two golf courses:

The neighbouring resort of Benalmadena is also worthy of a visit for the nightlife enthusiast – see our reviews of Benalmadena nightclubs & bars .

Moving to Fuengirola

If you are thinking of moving to Fuengirola, then you must read our expat interview with Daniel Holmquist , marketing and IT manager at Alamo Costa del Sol Real Estate below:

Daniel, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Fuengirola compared to other Costa del Sol towns?

Fuengirola, with its near 70,000 inhabitants is the centre of many of the Expat communities on the Costa del Sol. The train from Malaga, by way of the airport, has its last stop here. There are many reasons why so many of our clients prefer Fuengirola. You don’t need a car, several international schools, churches, associations are located in Fuengirola. Many of the businesses in the area are owned by foreigners and the majority of shops have English speaking staff.

However, apart from the expat communities, Fuengirola is a Spanish town with a pulsating everyday life that keeps the city moving also in the winter. The town is located only 20 minutes’ drive from Malaga airport and it has the longest and most beautiful beach promenade on the coast. 8 kms with generous cycle and pedestrian lanes are lined with hundreds of restaurants and bars. Just outside Fuengirola is Mijas Golf with two 18-hole golf courses.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

If you don’t like the pulse of a small city, but prefer the countryside, you might find Fuengirola a bit too busy.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

It’s approximately 50% Spanish and 50% foreigners.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

I enjoy having a nice meal with my wife in the different types of restaurants that Fuengirola can offer. I also enjoy going to the beach and playing football with my friends at one of the local sports centres.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

Of course! I have a few favourites, but I can really recommend these:

1. El Rancho de Salva , great meat restaurant in central Fuengirola 2. El Río , fantastic restaurant in Los Boliches with specialties such as Steak Tartar and Fondue 3. El Tostón , renowned traditional Spanish restaurant in the heart of Fuengirola 4. Chiringuito Antonio Videra , Traditional Spanish fish restaurant on the seafront in Los Boliches 5. Indian Balti , traditional Indian restaurant on the seafront in Torreblanca 6. Sawasdee , traditional Thai restaurant on the seafront in Torreblanca

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

Yes, of course! You can find a wide selection of different types of services and in your own language!

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Mijas, 10-15 minutes’ drive, is a traditional Andalusian village with white-wash little houses and narrow streets.

castillo_de_sohail_09

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

Fuengirola has Swedish and Finnish schools and a British College can be found in nearby Torremuelle, only 10 minutes by car. The Norwegian school is in nearby Arroyo de la Miel, also about 10 minutes by car.

Is crime an issue for expats?

Like in every town, there is crime, but it is not something you notice on a day-to-day basis.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

Property prices have slowly started rising again, after hitting rock bottom less than a year ago.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

Fuengirola has always been a very attractive place to live, but since the property prices have only recently started turning upwards, now is a great time to buy. Opportunities can always be found even though Bank repossessions are not very common.

puerto_de_fuengirola

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

There are many, but I would like to mention these in particular:

Puebla Lucia

Puebla Lucia is a quiet and peaceful oasis in the heart of Fuengirola. This is a fenced off area with large swimming pools and tropical gardens, but most of all, it is calm and relaxing right in the middle of town! Puebla Lucia was built in the 1980s and is considered the most attractive area of Fuengirola. Puebla Lucia has received several architectural awards for its authentic Spanish building style.

Los Boliches

Los Boliches is a district of Fuengirola, situated in the eastern parts of town. Like the town centre, Los Boliches is an urban area with mostly apartment blocks and a few rows of townhouses. In the blocks closest to the sea, you have the busiest parts and this is also where you have most of the bars, restaurants and shops. You also have several supermarkets and a smaller version of the Corte Inglés department store, all this within walking distance! A few streets up from the beach you have a smaller area of townhouses, which are very attractive due to their central location. Los Boliches has its own train station, so it is easy to go to the airport or further on to Málaga.

Torreblanca

Torreblanca is a district of Fuengirola, with Los Boliches and Los Pacos as its closest neighbours in the municipality. It is a quiet area, but at the same time near the city pulse of Fuengirola and the wonderful seafront Paseo Maritimo. Most of the properties here are villas and townhouses, but you can also find a few apartment blocks. Torreblanca has its own train station and several bus stops, or if you prefer to go by car, Fuengirola is only 2 minutes away. The Malaga airport is roughly 20 minutes away by car.

How much are the typical property prices in Fuengirola for apartments, villas etc?

It depends a lot on situation, views, distance to beach etc, but a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment is usually priced between 180,000 and 240,000 euros. A 3-bedroom townhouse is usually priced between 250,000 and 350,000 euros and a villa from 400,000 euros and up.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Fuengirola or surrounding area?

Since the real estate business is different in Spain to many other countries and agents are in most cases members of collaboration networks, choose one agent that you feel comfortable working with and has good knowledge and experience in the area you are looking to buy a property in and stick to that agent. That agent will then look for a property not just in its own listings but also collaborating agents’ listings and help you through the whole sales process. Of course, we hope that we at Alamo Costa del Sol Real Estate can be your choice of agent!

Daniel, thank you so much for taking the time to help our readers with your experiences in Spain. If you want to contact him, you can find his details below.

Alamo Costa del Sol

Calle Cordoba 37 – Edificio Fortuna, Local 5 29640 Fuengirola (Malaga) Tel: +34 674 307 436 Tel: +34 952 46 95 19 Fax: +34 951 24 26 31 E-mail: [email protected] www.alamocostadelsol.com

Benalmadena or Fuengirola, which is better?

Both are fairly similar, they are close together on Spain’s Costa del Sol, they are large tourist resorts with great beaches so of course they both have plenty of restaurants, bars and things to do but our choice would be Fuengirola because it seems more authentic and Spanish due its history as a former small fishing village.

Torremolinos or Fuengirola, which is better?

Both are popular tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol but Torremolinos is bigger and close to Malaga airport so this makes it better if you want more nightlife as well as a wider choice of restaurants and bars. Fuengirola also has plenty of facilities and things to do and see so choose this if you prefer a smaller city.

We have lived in fuengirola 3 times in the last 18years. The Spanish people are very friendly and helped us to settle into our rented apartments each time we relocated. Our English friends were there to support us whenever something cropped up that was challenging. We also made friends with lots of other people from different cultures in the many bars and restaurants along the paseo. The area has its own eco climate and with lots of things to do and see for all age groups. We still holiday there as and when possible although we are now living back in Manchester England. We will always have half our hearts firmly in Fuengirola . Fantastic place to live and for holidays.

I am a South African, looking at relocating to Malaga, Spain in 2016 as my partner is a Doctor and has landed a great opportunity there. He has an EU passport but I don’t.

I am a qualified Public Relations Officer and Personal Trainer. I currently run the social media, communications and employee management department at M&D Health (multi- disciplinary medical and wellness brand). I am also a personal trainer. I have a vast amount of experience and knowledge in dealing with people (whether it be waitressing, au airing, personal training, receptionist duty, public relations, people management skills and event co-ordinating).

We are coming to Spain in the beginning of next year but I would like to find out what opportunities there are for me beforehand so I can make contact with the relevant people (employees) and maybe even secure a job before I relocate permanently.

I would love to do something in my field of expertise but I am also open to whatever opportunities get thrown my way. I am a friendly, positive, extroverted individual with a passion for health, wellness, peoples satisfaction and hard work. My home language is English but I am in the process of learning Spanish which I am picking up quite quickly.

Any information you can provide me with would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Let’s help you get better acquainted with the area with an integrated Fuengirola map. The town itself is relatively small and you can see the A7 is the major motorway funnelling traffic through the area.

The Fuengirola marina that you see is very popular being situated in the centre of the Sea promenade, Rey de España. The area has some well known restaurants and hotels that are regularly frequented by tourists from around the world.

You can switch the map of Fuengirola to street view by clicking the tab in the top right corner. Some people find it easier to get to know the area that way.

Fuengirola is a crowded beach town decorated with utilitarian apartment buildings, but, despite half a century of rampant development, it retains a few redeeming qualities. Check out the beach – all 7km of it – adorned with a 10th-century Moorish castle. The town also has a large foreign-resident population, many of whom arrived in the '60s – and stayed (yes, there are a few grey ponytails around).

Fuengirola Old Town: An Insider’s Guide by a Local

Avatar photo

Table of Contents

If you visit Fuengirola, you might wonder if it has an old town like most Andalusian villages and towns.

Fuengirola is a bit different from other destinations on the Costa del Sol—it doesn’t have a historic centre like Malaga or Marbella, but there is a part of the town that locals often call ‘the old town’.

I have been living in Fuengirola since 2020, and know the city inside-out, so allow me to be your guide through Fuengirola old town.

So what place do we call the ‘old town’? It’s the area around the main post office building and the Plaza de la Constitution .

If you would like to explore what the old town of Fuengirola has to offer, here is a short guide with photos!

Where is Fuengirola Old Town?

There is no formal designation of the borders of the old town, unlike in other cities like Malaga or Marbella.

Fuengirola is relatively small and compact , so the old town area is usually meant as the narrow oldest part of the city dominated by terraced houses with a high concentration of bars and restaurants. Most of the area is designated as walking streets only, so you will not encounter much traffic and you can explore the whole area on foot fairly easily.

The heart of the area is around Plaza de la Constitution which spills out to the nearby small streets and alleyways.

Paseo Maritimo Avenue borders the old town in the south and the main traffic road (which I expertly refer to as the ‘bus road’) in the North.

Fuengirola Old Town: Location on Map

The map below roughly illustrates how far Fuengirola’s old town stretches – just zoom out and see the yellow areas on the map.

As I mentioned earlier, there is no official designation of the old town, but if you use the map below as guidance you’re guaranteed not to miss it.

What to See in Fuengirola Old Town?

Fuengirola’s old town is certainly not abundant with historic sights or attractions.

It is mostly known as the place with the highest concentration of restaurants and bars , and a great place to venture for a night out.

If you’re looking for some exciting places to see and activities, you will have to venture out of the old town – check my article on best things to do in Fuengirola here.

What Are the Best Restaurants in Fuengirola Old Town?

There are so many places you can eat in Fuengirola’s old town and sometimes it may feel overwhelming to choose from the options.

One thing I would advise against is taking a stroll around Calle Moncayo and the small streets it spills into.

There are dozens of restaurants and bars scattered on this narrow street, which wouldn’t be a problem, but as you walk through you are haggled by every single waiter to check their menu and not so gently nudged to eat there. Especially if you’re visiting out of the main tourist season and they are desperate for customers.

I personally find it very annoying and unpleasant, but if you don’t mind the hagglers, it’s certainly an experience! The other consequence of the high concentration of restaurants and tourists is the fact that the place is the biggest hot spot for street sellers .

As you try to eat your dinner in peace, you get approached about 10 times an hour (I’m not exaggerating) to buy some sunglasses, hats, shoes (!!!) or even the latest fake handbag.

I’ve eaten my way around Fuengirola for a few years now, and there were a few very memorable unpleasant experiences I’ve had, which I will list below.

Of the places I would recommend , it’s Casa Pasta at Calle Palangregos (full review with pictures here ) and Picoteo Restaurant (much smaller but super cosy and innovative menu – full review here ) which is by the main post office square.

There are a few more interesting places around the square which I’m yet to test, but they look great in terms of food offers and venue – one of them is called Casa Colon and the other place is behind the post office – Gastromercado La Galeria .

The places I would advise avoiding?

Casa Pasta Trattoria – the venue is beautiful and the food was good, but they charge you for use of cutlery and linen (way to keep people coming back!). I believe it was around 2.5 euros per person, no matter if you’re kid or adult. I don’t mind paying for extras, but this just seemed like a joke by the management that the poor waiters had to suffer for and explain to angry customers.

Limoncello Restaurant – this pretty Italian place was my favourite for a while until they changed the chef or ingredients they use and the food is barely acceptable for the prices they charge.

Restaurante Bodega Charolais – I don’t know how this place ever deserved a mention in the Michelin guide. Beautiful setting and is full of locals, but the food looks and tastes like something you’re served in a Chiringuito (with higher prices). When I had salmon there, it was served raw in the middle and after I asked for it to be cooked through, I was told by the chef that it was the correct way to cook salmon. My husband’s duck was super dry and not at all what you would expect for an establishment that brands itself as high-end. Normally I would give every place another chance, but the attitude put me off completely. What happened to the customer is always right?

Best Places for Night Life in Fuengirola Old Town?

When it comes to bars and nightclubs, those are scattered at the edge of the old town closer to the coastline.

Unfortunately, I am no expert when it comes to nightlife and clubs, but there is plenty to choose from.

Just a word of warning – be careful who you drink with and who are you accepting drinks from, especially if you are a woman or young girl.

Unfortunately, I happen to know about a case where a drink was spiked and the end was a rather traumatic experience. This wasn’t an isolated event and it happens more than you can hear about. Be careful as drugs are abundant. Always hold your own drink (don’t leave it unattended), don’t accept drinks from strangers and have friends nearby in case something happens.

Fuengirola Old Town Photos

Here are a few extra photos from Fuengirola old town – much of the streets look very much the same and they get very busy the closer it gets to dinner time (for locals that’s fairly late between 8pm and 9pm).

Fuengirola has become one of the favourite destinations of tourists who come to the province of Malaga; thanks to important infrastructure development. This town, which belongs to the Costa del Sol, is located in the centre of this wonderful coastline and is easy to access from anywhere which facilitates the arrival of many tourists throughout the year. It is no coincidence, of course, that 5,550 British have chosen Fuengirola as their place of residence.

Abderrahman III ordered the construction of the castle in the year 956; thousand years later, the building has been renovated numerous times to suit its current reality as the scenario for numerous concerts and cultural events.

The archaeological site of Finca del Secretario is also worth visiting. The discovery of this Roman enclave occurred in the 70's. In it, there remains among the centuries I and V D.C., amongst others, including a pottery, a spa resort and salting factory were found. The site has an interpretive centre which include the spa rooms which have been recreated.

The Plaza de Toros of Fuengirola , opened in 1962, houses every season all kinds of bullfighting and equestrian festivities, such as classic dressage and national competition of hitches and carriages.

The promenade of Fuengirola is one of the largest in the Spanish coasts. It is eight kilometres long and, while on one side, there is municipality's beaches, whereas on the other side, bars, restaurants, terraces and local hotels and shops are located.

Its best to take the AP-7 paid motorway to get to Fuengirola from Mlaga. Its the fastest way and takes between 25 and 30 minutes. Another option is to take the E-15 until you merge with the AP-7, taking 35 minutes.

On public transport, you can take the C-1 Cercanas commuter train from Mlaga with the trip taking an hour.

By bus, the M-113 departs from Muelle Heredase and takes about 45 minutes with a ticket costing a little more than €2.

NATURAL RESOURCES

Fuengirola River Park has become the favourite of those who want to enjoy nature a few meters away from the town centre. It is more than 120,000 square meters that guard large green spaces, fountains, benches and arbors on Walking and resting areas quietly.

The Finca del Secretario , an archaeological site of great historical value that was discovered in 1987, is located in the centre of Fuengirola. Its 5,000 metres hold a fish salting factory, a pottery workshop and a thermal bath complex.

The park provides a fantastic trip to the past to see how people lived during Roman times. Pieces of incalculable historical value were discovered at this site, such as agricultural utensils from the times or the Venus of Fuengirola, one of the emblems of this city.

The seven beaches of Fuengirola are another great attraction of the town. Its location, next to the town, and its very broad services are the main reasons for the visit of tourists, who can see the high level of these facilities, thanks to the signalling blue flags as proof of quality. Among the outstanding beaches, are that of Los Boliches-Las Gaviotas and Castillo .

ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS

The best of nature is in the Bioparc Fuengirola , a zoo based on biodiversity and the presentation of species, whose recreation of the different ecosystems will surprise the visitor.

The Marina of Fuengirola is the axis on which the lovers of sea and water sports meet, enjoying the closeness of its 226 berths in the heart of the city and many restaurants and businesses in the sector to cover all the needs of these tourists.

Next to Castillo Sohail , Fuengirola also has another important space to hold large events, Palacio de la Paz (Peace Palace). This premises, of 4,000 square meters and a capacity of over 700 people, hosts every year, an important cultural and recreational programming.

POPULAR FESTIVALS

The International Peoples Fair , held in May, is the key event of the year. It is related with the meeting between more than 30 countries showing highlights of their culture and folklore. Declared by Provincial Tourist Singularity, this festival lasts four days and includes tastings and exhibitions of music and dance.

In June, on the occasion of San Juan , the typical 'jas' (rag dolls stuffed with sawdust) are burned; While in July, as in other towns in the Costa del Sol, on the 16th, there is the fisherman procession celebrated on the day of the Virgen del Carmen .

Other festival highlighted is the Ruta de la Tapa Eroticism , accompanied by theatre performances, concerts, exhibitions and trade shows.

One of the most renowned musical events on the Costa del Sol is Marenostrum Fuengirola, which began in 2016 as the towns firm commitment to live music. Marenostrum is one of the most spectacular outdoor music venues, thanks to its proximity to the sea and the view to the monumental Sohail castle.

It offers numerous musical performances for all types of public, from May to September; inside the Arabic fortress for the smaller more intimate concerts, and on the hillside for the larger ones.

The festive calendar in Fuengirola is completed with Easter with traditional penitential processions.

Fish, served with salt, grilled or fried, is the driving force of cuisine of Fuengirola, which counts among its specialties, rice with seafood, stewed potatoes with conger, dogfish with potatoes, fried whitebait (small anchovies) or mullet fishing.

Town history

Fuengirola was founded by the Phoenicians under the name of "Suel". They established a fish salting factory in the area, which soon became a major trading spot in the Mediterranean. Under Emperor Augustus, the Romans turned it into a municipality annexed to the conventus of Gades. Evidence of the worship of god Neptune has been found, as well as elements that point at the existence of a powerful nobility.

On the slopes of the mount where the Sohail Castle sits, archaeologists found remains of the Suel Iberian-Phoenician settlement then colonised by the Romans: the plinth of a statue, a funerary altar, and so on. The ruins of the Torreblanca baths and the Finca del Secretario site attest to the Roman presence. The so-called "Venus de Fuengirola" was unearthed here.

When the Arabs came to the Iberian Peninsula, Suel became "Suhayl". The fortress was expanded under Abd-ar-Rahman III. It was here that King Henry II of Castile and Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada signed the 1340 truce that led to the revival of trade and commerce. According to scholar Juan Temboury, Suhayl was an educated town, the birthplace of illustrious writers like the poet As-Suhayl, who dedicated a poem to his hometown after the fire.

Like many other towns in Andalusia, Suhayl fell to the Christian troops in 1485. By then, it had changed its name to "Font-jirola". After the Reconquista, the town was repopulated with old Christians, but they did not stay for long: in 1511, chronicles registered the village as "depopulated"; it was only a defensive spot, used for coastal surveillance. This led to the lands allocated to Fuengirola during the Repartimientos (land allocation plan) ending up in Mijas.

In February 1841, a group of residents in Fuengirola sent a petition for independence from Mijas. They got the autonomy three months later, and Antonio Garca Corts was elected as the first town mayor. The newly elected authorities embarked on an expansion of the town"s boundaries, a fruitless endeavour that went on until the early decades of the twentieth century.

The local economy was badly affected by phylloxera in the nineteenth century, since most fields were vineyards. The first signs of recovery came with the arrival of the railroad in 1916, followed by the supply of drinking water 20 years later.

As early as 1935, the provincial weekly La Provincia referred to Fuengirola as a holiday resort. The first (small) hotels were built in the 1950s. They were the seed of the world-class infrastructure that this town in Western Costa del Sol has to offer today.

Fuengirolas cuisine stands out for its flavours of the sea through its extensive selection of fish and shellfish. Thats how the town pays homage to its roots as a fishing village. The stars are Mlaga-style fried fish and sardine skewers, seafood rice, roasted potatoes with conger eel, dogfish with potatoes, red mullet a la marinera and fried whitebait.

Fuengirola is also home to ajoblanco, garlic soup, polvorones or pepper salad. We, of course, cant forget their roasted meats that are famous in the area.

Fuengirola

Its municipal area is one of the smallest in the province, consisting merely of the coastal strip occupied by the town and the Santa Fe de los Boliches district, which make up seven kilometres of excellent beaches.

Though apparently of Phoenician origin, the town's history really begins in Arabic times with the building of Sohail Castle , part of whose walls still remain, for defence purposes. The town centre still retains a certain traditional air, though it is nowadays characterised by the hotels, apartments etc. necessary to its main source of income: sun and sand tourism.

It was inhabited by the bástulos, the Phoenicians, and, later, the Carthaginians.

The Romans called it Suel and the Arabs Sohail, the name of a star which, according to Ibn-Jallicam, could only be seen in the peninsula from this spot.

In 912, Abderraman III ordered the construction of a fortress on the small hill which stands between the coastline and the mouth of the River Sohail; the remains of this castle, though in a state of extreme disrepair, still form an important feature in the landscape of the Fuengirola coast. It was used as for military purposes and to monitor the shores until the 19th century, playing an important part in the War of Independence.

Fuengirola was captured by the Catholic Monarchs on 7 August, 1487.

In the 17th century, the town acquired its present-day denomination, which appears to be derived from the name by which it was referred to by the Genoese sailors who came to these shores and used dragnets, which they called "gironas".

Abderraman Ben Abdallah Ben Ahmed "El Sohaili", the eminent 12th-century writer and essayist famed for his knowledge of grammar and theology, was born here in 1115.
