The gourmet dining options were exceptional, and I appreciated the attentiveness of staff members. The onboard entertainment programs were also excellent. The cabin was clean and neat even though there were not many luxurious amenities.

I particularly enjoyed the cooking classes and sunset party. All guests were friendly. The crew was friendly too and always ready to assist. My cabin has a wonderful view of Halong Bay. The spa facilities were fantastic, and I treated myself to some rejuvenating treatments. Tony was a great staff who supported us throughout the journey.

The staff made us feel welcome that exceeded my expectations. The itinerary was well-planned but a bit short. The ship itself was comfortable, and the cabins were clean and well-appointed. The food menu was a highlight with a variety of cuisines and flavors. The onboard activities were engaging and fun-filled. A great thanks to the captain and the crew for supporting us.

Le Journey Halong Luxury cruise had plenty of activities for both kids and adults, ensuring fun for guests of all ages. My family had much-needed relaxation time. The cabin was not really top-notch but enjoyable and beautifully decorated. The dining was impressive, offering a good mix of options. Generally, we had a great experience onboard.

While the cabin wasn't overly luxurious, it was comfortable and well-maintained. The staff onboard were also friendly and helpful. Entertainment programs and shore excursions offered were well-organized. Overall, it was a great value for the price.

I and my friends recently took this mid-range cruise to Halong Bay for 2 days and we had a really relaxing and enjoyable experience. The food options were good but there was only one space for dining, I expect more venues to enjoy the food.

The cruise offered good-quality services at an affordable price. The staff on board were friendly and attentive, and the ship had a variety of amenities to keep us entertained. Lan Ha Bay was beautiful but there was only one option for the itinerary. Hope the cruise has more itinerary options.

12.00 – 12.30: After a brief tender journey from the port, the cruise captain and crew will welcome you aboard LE JOURNEY LUXURY CRUISE. A quick cruise briefing and safety instructions will be provided while sipping a pleasant welcome drink.

12.30 – 13.00: The LE JOURNEY LUXURY CRUISE visits Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay, two of the New Seven Natural Wonders. Lunch is provided on board while the ship sails past magnificent limestone karst structures that rise dramatically from the water.

14.30:  the cruise reaches the sparsely populated area of Ba Trai Dao – Tra Bau Valley natural lagoon in Lan Ha Bay. Swimming or kayaking will allow you to appreciate the emerald water’s coolness.

17.30 – 18.00: Upon your return to LE JOURNEY LUXURY CRUISE, you can enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the Gulf of Tonkin. Enjoy the sundeck party “HAPPY HOUR” for an energetic beverage and snack.

19.30: Sumptuous Deluxe Dinner is served. Enjoy delectable local cuisine prepared and served by our excellent onboard catering team.

20:30, a variety of activities, such as karaoke and squid fishing , are planned. Alternatively, you can relax with invigorating cocktails from our bar. You have the remainder of the day at your leisure.

6:15 -7:00  breakfast is served. It could be a terrific idea to enjoy a lunch in Ha Long Bay while seeing the sunrise.

7:00 , the ship approaches the Light – Dark cave region. This natural marvel illustrates the creation of karst mountains. You can discover the Pearl Farm area by kayaking on your own or by boarding a bamboo boat with the assistance of locals.

LE JOURNEY LUXURY CRUISE welcomes you back aboard and it’s time to check out at 9.30 a.m.

10:00, a delicious lunch will be provided while returning to port.

11.35 We return to the bay’s southern pier, where our passengers depart. At the Tuan Chau dock, we say our goodbyes; this concludes the program. Transportation between Ha Noi and Ha Long and back to Ha Noi is available upon request.

08:00 – 08:30: Pick up Those who book our transfer service will be picked up from hotels in Hanoi’s Old Quarter in order to explore Halong Bay – Lan Ha Bay. If you are not in Hanoi for the pickup, please arrive at Tuan Chau Harbor at the time listed below.

11:30 – 12:00   Arrive at Tuan Chau Harbor Our cruise manager will deliver a cruise briefing and safety introduction while you enjoy your welcome drink. Check in your cabin.

13:00 Delicious Lunch While Le Journey Luxury Cruise sets sail into magnificent Ha Long Bay – an extension of Ha Long Wonder that is much quieter and has fewer tourists – a delicious lunch is served. Passing by the famous Finger Islet and Candle Islet, as well as thousands of uniquely shaped limestone towers and islands.

15:30 Visit Tra Bau Floating Village Option 1: Swim at Ba Trai Dao Island Option 2: Our small boat takes you to a fishing village called “ Tra Bau ” to explore. Join the Kayaking excursion to Tra Bau, the famous filming location for Kong Skull Island (King Kong).

17:00-18:00 | Sunset Party, Happy Hour, and Cooking Class R”

19:00 Dinner Our wonderful onboard catering staff will prepare and serve you delicious local cuisine, and the night view of Lan Ha Bay is breathtaking.

21:00 – 23:00: NIGHT ACTIVITIES Overnight activities on board include squid fishing , fantastic drinks at our bars, movies and karaoke, spa therapy, and simply relaxing in your room.

6:00 to 7:00 Breakfast Tea, coffee, and a light breakfast are served in a peaceful place with fresh air.

8:30 Visit Cat Ba You will be taken to the day tour cruise to go further into Lan Ha Bay. You start your trip by biking through vast rice fields to get to Viet Hai village , a quiet place with stunning views. The we’ll stop to take a break and look at an old house made of straw, mud, and bamboo to learn about how people there live.

12-00: Lunch Go back to the day cruise. At the restaurant, you will get a lunch with a lot of different dishes.

14:00: Visit Ba Trai Dao The cruise takes you to Ba Trai Dao beach , which is a beautiful, unspoiled beach. This is the most beautiful beach in Lan Ha Bay. It has beautiful white sand, not many people, and is very quiet. You can swim or go kayaking here.

This is also the best time for tourists to enjoy Bamboo Boating or Kayaking which is an interesting activity to discover the truest beauty of the Limestone Mountains and the blue sky of Lan Ha Bay.

10:00 Brunch time – Fun time During the time well-prepared lunch is served, Our Cruises slowly navigates emerald water and thousands of Karst Mountainstowards the Harbor.

11:00 – 11:30 Back to Tuan Chau Harbor – Hanoi Bus transfer service by the highway from Halong to Hanoi is available for booking in advance.

No it’s not. We have mentioned clearly what’s included in “Price Inclusion” section above. However, we do provide transfer service between cruises and Hanoi/Hai Phong/Ninh Binh. The cruise would be back to the port at 11:30. It then take 3 hours to get back to Hanoi airport & 45 mins to get to Hai Phong airport. As a results, we strongly suggest:

• Flight from Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong City): After 2pm
• Flight from Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi City): After 5pm

When packing for Cruise, the most important items to bring are comfortable clothing, swimwear, and sunscreen. If you travel during winter months (November to Feb), you may also need to pack a light jacket or sweater to keep warm during cooler evenings.

 Typically, each cruise provides 1 – 2 bottles of water for free every day, and you will not be allowed to bring your own drinks. So, if you want to stay hydrated, bring some money (the drinks on board are a little pricy)

It is also recommended that you bring a camera or smartphone with enough of storage capacity for photos and videos in order to make the most of your trip. Prepare some waterproof protection for them, as you will be doing a lot of water-based activities.

Finally, remember to bring any medications or toiletries you might need while away from home.

When we got there, we were made to feel so welcome. Some of us had food allergies, but the cook was able to handle everything. The rooms were beautiful, and the food was delicious. The trip was planned with the accuracy of a military operation, which was good because it made the most of the time on board. All of the staff were great and very helpful, and it was a great time.

After scoring a great flight deal to Hanoi in Vietnam, my best gal and I decided that we will make the most of our trip — after all, we only had 5 days to spend in the country. So, apart from exploring the lively and vibrant city of Hanoi itself, we made sure to drop by Halong Bay in order to finally witness this UNESCO World Heritage Site ! (Halong Bay Cruise)

Another reason why we wanted to visit Halong Bay was because of how it looked so similar to the limestone cliffs and pillars that you will find in the Philippines’ Palawan islands (the UNESCO sites of El Nido & Coron to be exact). Well, sure enough, we were right! Nevertheless, each of these places has its own charm and we were grateful to have witnessed Vietnam’s version.

Now a lot of tourists would actually book either a day trip or overnight trip when they visit Halong Bay from Hanoi; however, we wanted to spend more days there… and thanks to Buffalo Tours , we had the chance to sail around Halong Bay for 3 days and 2 nights with an amazing cruise provider called as L’Azalée !

Venturing to both the well-known and off-the-beaten-path spots in the bay, you bet that we had a great time for each and every day that passed! If you wanna know exactly why do read on below and find out how we have come to love this experience through and through.

Halong Travel Guide

» best time to visit.

The fall season (October to December) along with months of January to April are the best times to visit Halong Bay because of the pleasant weather that brings a low chance of rain — however, this also means that it will be peak season. So if you’re rather traveling on a budget, traveling during summer (June to September) is your best option as it is the low season given that there is a higher chance of rain or typhoons.

» Getting in to Halong Bay

You can reach Ha Long by first landing in Hanoi and then taking a bus ride (or an organized tour such as this) to Halong Bay which roughly takes 4 hours one way. Otherwise, you can also choose to fly directly to Cat Bi International Airport in Haiphong which is just a 2.5-hour bus ride away from Ha Long city.

My go-to platform for grabbing the best flight deals is  Skyscanner . I scan through this site to ensure the best fare that I can find! But of course, it’s always good practice to research first the budget airlines that exist in the country that you’re currently staying in since they could have rock-bottom prices that are not often visible in the above flight search engines.

» Visa for Vietnam

If you’re NOT a citizen of any of Vietnam’s  exempted countries , you are then required to avail of a visa beforehand.

» Where to Stay (Halong Bay Accommodations)

To search for the best hotel accommodation in Vietnam at the best prices, I suggest cross-checking hotel prices between  Agoda  and  Booking.com . But if you’re rather interested in renting comfortable houses or apartments, you should search through AirBnB .

» What to Pack for a Halong Cruise

Depends on the weather. We visited Halong Bay in February which is winter season. It averages 17-22°C in the mornings — but if in case it’s not foggy and the sun shines well and good, it becomes perfect and I can wear shorts and a shirt only. If you’re coming during summer (May to October), there’s no need to pack too much swimming gear because swimming in Halong Bay has been outlawed (except for a few islands where it’s allowed).

» Vietnam Currency

Vietnamese Dong (VND / ₫) wherein 23,000₫ is equal to about USD $1~ / €0.85~ / Php 45~ (this is as of March 2020). In the event that you want to exchange your money for VND, I highly advise that you do NOT exchange your money at the airport since the rates there are not competitive.

• How to best exchange your currency? Either exchange it at a bank or at a money exchanger in your home country or in Vietnam’s city center. Better yet, just withdraw from an ATM with your debit/credit card — however, you must do one big withdrawal to minimize fees with your bank. Speaking of cards, a lot of Vietnam’s establishments accept credit cards but it’s always advisable to have cash on hand because a lot of smaller shops do not accept international credit cards.

» Cost of Travel in Vietnam

To give you an idea, you should expect to travel in Vietnam with an average daily cost of about USD $15~ per person on a budget, or at least $40~ if you want to experience more comfort on activities, tours, hotels, and more. (Values below show low budget to medium budget ranges).

Halong Bay Cruise & Price

L’Azalée Cruises may have just been established last 2015, but they have swiftly built themselves a reputation as being one of the premier cruise providers in Halong Bay.

To date, they have over 6 vessels that provide a range of packages such as the following:

• 6.5 Hours — A classic cruise wherein you will be visiting Sung Sot Cave, and afterward you choose one of these 3 activities: ride a boat through Luon Cave and see monkeys, hike to the top of Ti Tov Island for panoramic views, or hike and swim at Soi Sim Island. This includes a buffet brunch, afternoon tea, and use of onboard kayaks and snorkeling equipment.
• 4.5 Hours — For those on a tight schedule, this classic cruise will make you pass by Dao Tung Lam Bay, Thumb Island, Incense Island, and Ba Hang floating village, and then have a guided walk through Thien Cung cave. This also includes a buffet brunch. .
• Intimate Journey To The West — This is a premium cruise geared towards couples and it mainly involves visiting several caves and beaches as well as trying out squid fishing.
• Intimate Journey To The Center — Also a premium cruise geared towards couples. It differs from the above with the caves and bays that you’ll be seeing. To know the distinction, see  this page.
• Halong Explorer — Unlike the other two, this is the deluxe cruise wherein you’ll be joining other guests. The itinerary will almost be similar, but with additional special activities like a Tai Chi and cooking class. .
• Deep Into the Bay —  Premium cruise  for couples.
• The Heart of Halong —  Deluxe cruise  which is the standard. .
• SEAPLANE & CRUISE COMBO: starts at around $300 per person This is a packaged cruise that includes a 2-day-1-night cruise and a scenic one-way seaplane flight to Halong Bay from Hanoi (you can choose to have it after the trip too which is from Halong Bay to Hanoi).

Like I’ve already mentioned, I had the chance to go on their amazing 3-day-2-night cruise. It helps to note though that depending on the weather, the places that you will be visiting may differ or change as compared to what’s stated on the website. (We were given a document beforehand that shows the intended itinerary, but there were a few changes on the way — which was not a problem at all.)

Moreover, the prices mentioned above may change by season and apart from the already mentioned inclusions such as food and water equipment, transfer to and fro your hotel will also be provided.  (Naturally, airfare and visa costs are not covered.)

» The Vessels

Premium Cruise Vessels Private Asian-style junks that have a capacity for 4 people (hence, 2 rooms). It features queen-sized beds, a bathroom and shower, flat-screen TVs, and a private deck for the rooms. Meanwhile, the vessel has a spacious top deck for dining and sun deck sprees.

Deluxe Cruise Vessel The largest member of the fleet, this features 10 superior cabins (16sqm) and 2 junior suites (23sqm) — each of which has a private bathroom. (The suites have a private outdoor deck at the rear of the ship). The facility has a wide open-air sun deck with sun loungers and a bar and a large restaurant and bar area at the middle deck.

Classic Cruise Vessel A single vessel that is 24 meters in length with a capacity of 40 guests. It has a top deck with seats and sun beds as well as a lower deck that has an air-conditioned lounge bar.

» The Staff

L’Azalée Cruises has English-speaking staff, so you should not have any worries about that. When it comes to service, their hospitality is on par with that of the Philippines — which means a lot, because I am proud of the service industry in my home country.

All throughout our trip, we dealt with 2 main tour guides and they were great to be with! They offered a lot of information and trivia on every place that we visited; and if we ever had any problems, they always went above and beyond to assist us in order to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

» The Activities

• 8:00AM – Pick-up at hotel and departure from Hanoi to Halong Bay
• 12:00PM – Arrival at Halong Bay and transfer to Tuan Chau Island to board the boat
• Settling into our rooms and then a buffet lunch
• Tour at Sung Sot Cave or ‘Cave of Surprises’, the largest cave in the bay
• Cruise through Lom Bo Canal
• Visit the floating Pearl Farm
• Kayaking activity ( if you want to kayak, please let L’Azalée know 48 hours beforehand)
• Cooking class on how to make Vietnamese Spring Rolls
• Squid Fishing
• Catch the sunrise at Bai Tu Long Bay while taking part in a Tai Chi class with a guru
• Transfer to a different boat at Ti Tov Island to cruise to lesser-known areas of Halong Bay
• Visit the locals at Cu Van fishing village whilst riding a smaller tender to sail through the homes
• Buffet lunch on the boat
• Cruise by Drum Cave, Trinh Nu Cave, Ho Dong Tien Cave, and a number of islets

There was never a day in L’Azalée that we were hungry; besides, every meal was just so filling and packed with varied dishes! Naturally, there are Vietnamese fares such as gỏi cuốn (spring rolls), pho (rice) noodles,  canh (soups), bánh mì (Vietnamese-style sandwich) , and more that are accompanied by other Western dishes, fruits, and desserts.

When it comes to drinks they have an array of wines, champagne, spirits, fruit juices, and coffee that you can choose from. Speaking of coffee, Vietnamese coffee is lauded as one of the best in the world — unfortunately, I’m not a coffee drinker so I can’t say much about that… however! My companions for this trip were, and they always kept singing praises about the cup of jo that they get served with.

The only improvement that I’d like to see is that I hope they offer snacks or a la carte desserts too on board. But then again, with how full the meals were, you’ll most likely not have any cravings!

» Halong Bay as a Destination

Halong Bay was exactly how we expected it to be — and more!

There are distinct differences though to that of Palawan in the Philippines (most especially the fact that in Halong Bay, you can’t just swim anywhere anymore and that the waters aren’t as clear); but anyhow, that didn’t take away the allure of it all. It remained to be a trip that was truly memorable!

Vietnam’s Halong Bay is a wonder that’s worthy to be seen and I’m absolutely glad that I had the chance to witness it for myself — more so in a cruise that helped enhance the overall journey!

That being said, I highly recommend L’Azalée Cruises if you’re looking for a company that will make the most of your stay and which will give you the best “bang for your buck”.

As usual, travelers stay overnight at hotels in Hanoi Old quarter's Area at night before, then we pick up  around 8am - 9am  in the next morning (Transfer from Hanoi to cruise harbor might take around 2-4 hours, depends on tours' class you book).

Travelers also flight from south of Vietnam/ Overseas to airport (Hai Phong airport, Noi Bai airport, Van Don airport) then do cruise on the same day, we can arrange for you transfer from airports directly to cruise harbors and join cruise but make sure u book early flight before 8am - 9am - 10am. Travelers must pay extra fee for car

Travelers also stay in near cruise harbor (for cruises are departed from Halong city), and you go to cruise harbor yourself, we show you location where to pick up easily.

If u stay in Tam Coc - Ninh Binh, we also arrange a private car (pay extra  fee ~ 170km- 3.5/4 hours driving) to cruise harbor and pick up at 8am from your hotels in Ninh Binh

• If cancelled up to 7 days before date of arrival, no fee will be charged
• If cancelled up to 3 days before date of arrival, 50 percent of total will be charged

For group of guest with number of person larger than 6:

• If cancelled up to 10 days before date of arrival, no fee will be charged

Booked a cruise through this Hunter cruise agent and the cruise experience was beautiful. The sightseeing tours were exciting. Photos do not do this place justice. It is absolutely stunning. Everywhere you go the views are amazing. The sunsets and sunrise are perfect. Get your camera ready as this place is beautiful..

The name halong came from the legend that a dragon landed on this bay. The view is wonderful. Each one of scattered islands gave me wonderful photos. My trip was just a day trip and I think it is too short. Spend at least one night. Yes photos of ha long bay are stunning, but you will be more stunned if you actually go there and see them with your own eyes..

Halong Bay was Visit on our Cambodia/Vietnam tour, we were very lucky to have our own guide and Junk Boat with crew.The Bay is such a beautiful place, we had a wonderful time spending all morning on the boat with lunch cooked for us.Halong Bay is certainly a must Visit if touring North Vietnam, fully recommended..

The views of the limestone islands in the Bay are stunning, especially if the weather cooperates. Strongly encourage one night on one of the many boats that ply the bay to allow for a less hurried itinerary and the very pleasant experiences of sunrise and sunset views. The boats are highly regulated and must stick to designated areas, but they are enough for lots of enjoyment. Various stops at caves, lookouts, kayaking, and small beach. Very good food on board our cruise with A-Class Stellar Cruises! Cabin was much cleaner and more "luxurious" than I expected..

Took the float plane both ways to save time. We only had one day and this was the best way to spend it. Thoroughly recommend the organisation we went with..

2 night 3 day cruise with v spirit, highly recommend, magic site even though we didn't go far into the bay. Lots of other boats at times added and detracted from the experience. Highly recommebd taking the extra night. Be careful who you go with as we heard some horro stories. Recommend v spirit great people, great service and food..

Just go and enjoy.. We stayed in a local boat Signagture over night so had a great opportunity to spend time just looking at the stunning scenery.. we also went canoeing to see some hidden away caves..

Halong Bay has been a dream of mine to visit for so long. It was breathtakingly beautiful and I could never get tired of the views! The colours and layers of all the cliffs and mountains are spectacular. Just make sure you find the right cruise - ours was overpriced and not worth it so do your research first! Also don't be surprised that there are a large number of boats around at night as they all park up together, but during the day we seemed to be on our own quite a lot. I think in the future this place won't be so nice as there is already so much rubbish floating around that it will continue to accumulate. Save this place by not littering and taking any rubbish back with you that you can..

This area has been a World Heritage Place among seven wonders of nature since 1994. What a beautiful spot on earth. A Halong Bay with its breathtaking beauty was undeniable and it is the most popular site to visit in Hanoi. There are many other things to do pay on the bay as well, like caving many many caves to choose from. Very helpful and informative and fun as well. If by overnight cruise, you can kayak by yourself to discover the bay, the cave more exciting..

the local village tour to Muong Hoa valley, Lao Chai and ta Vun village were worth for a visit. They also arrange a free taxi from our hotel in Sapa town to cable car station for us to visit Fansian peak..

10 Reasons To Love Capella Cruise - Best Halong Bay Cruise For Families

T he choices are plentisome (and overwhelming) when it comes to cruising Ha Long Bay. As you walk down the port in Ha Long City, and then watch further into the bay, dozens and hundreds of boats and ships of all shapes and sizes, fill up the incredible landscape. So which one should you choose when traveling with children?

We have three kids and wanted to overnight several nights on Ha Long Bay. We went with Capella Cruise and we can’t recommend them enough! Here are 10 things to know about the best Ha Long Bay cruise for families on Capella Cruise:

1- Capella Cruise Has The Only Water Slide In Ha Long Bay!

Probably not your number 1 priority when shopping for an Ha Long Bay cruise, but hey, for all it’s worth, our family loved it and its spices up the cruise! Also… if your kids see it and you’re on another ship… good luck!

2- Capella Cruise Family Rooms

The family rooms are the first reason we considered Capella Cruise, amongst the hundreds of other choices!

On most other cruise lines, you get very small cabins, and when you travel with children, they sleep on narrow beds, hard mattresses, and the beds go up in the walls during the day. On Capella Cruise, however, the Family Suite is a very large, 2-room suite, with the parental room and its gigantic bed, and a kids’ room with three individual beds. The mattresses and the bedding are the very best!

Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a standalone tub over viewing the bay! The Family Suite has a built-in tub, but the view is just as fantastic! And everyone has a large balcony as well!

In the room, you will find refillable water bottles, with water stations scattered around the ship, as well as Crocs for the whole family, to wear in the cabin or around the ship.

3- Daily Water Activities

Every day after lunch, Capella Cruise anchors in a beautiful bay, surrounded by some of the most gorgeous scenery our planet has to offer.

For a few hours, you are free to kayak anywhere in the bay. Our kids absolutely loved it – they even took naps on the kayak! We spotted locals’ graves on some of the islands, purple crabs, and giant jellyfish (they don’t sting and are a sight to see)!

The use of kayaks is free and included with your cruise – you will be given a life jacket. You can also rent stand-up paddle boards if you wish.

It is during water activities that the slide is open, and you are welcome to swim in the bay as well, enjoy the pool and hot tub, or just jump off the boat, if that’s what your active kiddos prefer to do!

4- All-Inclusive Excursions

Alright – the real reason you are coming to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam and what makes a good experience, great! The excursions are all included in the price of the Capella Cruise!!

You may be very happy to just cruise along the bay and take in the scenery – however, going out and experiencing the islands is the only way to fully take it in.

Depending on the the length of your cruise, you can experience the following excursions, with guides from the ship:

• Bicycle (or golf cart) tour on Cat Ba Island – the only inhabited island in Ha Long Bay: there you will partake in a foot fish massage, tasting of interesting local wines (think cobra wine!!), get a quick geography lesson, and cycle through gorgeous nature
• Three Peach Beach: a quick but sweet stop over at this golden sand beach. The water, a little cold for our liking, was beautiful, and our kids preferred to build a fort on the beach instead. Love that Capella Cruise brings all towels and water bottles on board the speed boat, so you don’t have to!
• Dry cave visit: after a quick speed boat trip, followed by a 15-minute car ride to another part of Cat Ba Island, visit this beautiful dry cave, accompanied by a guide from the ship. Dong Trung Trang is super fun, and unlike most caves, it is over ground, so the temperature is quite warm.
• On disembarkation day, board a bamboo boat to this ocean Dark & Bright Cave, where you can hope to spot one of only 80 langur monkeys left in the world. The government is trying to bring them all to this area of Cat Ba island, to help with conserving and growing the species, as it is one of the most endangered species on the planet. Quick tip – keep an eye out for moving foliage!

5- The Food!!!

We could not believe the gastronomic journey that was Capella Cruise. As with excursion, everyone has the same first dinner, second dinner, and so on. We sailed for 3 nights and all three dinners were incredible!

Dinner is a set menu, but before embarking, you will be asked about food allergies and preferences. From there, the chef will make the necessary changes. I am allergic to oysters and was brought other seafood when oysters were on the menu. We saw several vegetarians being served a totally different menu than ours.

Typically, breakfast and lunch are buffets, though we’ve had a sit-down lunch as well.

We loved being served lunch on embarkation day, as well as breakfast + brunch on disembarkation day. So no one went hungry between leaving the ship and getting back to Hanoi.

6- Different Lengths Of Stay Every Day

This one is a bit of a hard concept to grab, especially if you are used to cruising. With Capella Cruise, your family can choose to cruise 1, 2, or 3 nights (that is, until a new ship is added to the fleet). Because Ha Long Bay is fairly small, the ship anchors in the same anchorage every night, and moves back towards the port to pick up new passengers every day.

While the ship moves back closer to Ha Long City, if you are in between two nights, you will be away on your excursion. On any given day, day 1, 2, and 3 excursions are offered, and depending on which day of YOUR cruise it is, you will partake in that program. So everyone’s Day 1 is the same, no matter the day of the week you embarked.

Here’s the schedule, to help you decide on how many night work best for your family (if you ask me, 3 nights is a must!):

1 NIGHT – lunch and water activities upon embarking the ship, then happy hour en route to the night anchorage, dinner and squid fishing. The next morning, wake up early to visit the Dark & Bright Cave, before enjoying a brunch and disembarkation around 11AM

2 NIGHTS – Embarkation day is the same as for 1-nighters, but as you wake on your first morning, you will board a speed boat to Cat Ba island and enjoy the bike (or golf cart) tour and everything that visit entails, and some beach time at Three Peach Beach. Your second day will be the Dark & Bright Cave / brunch / disembarkation.

3 NIGHTS – Adding on to the 2-night itinerary from above, on your last full day, you will board a speed boat to Cat Ba island and visit Dong Trung Trang Cave! Disembarkation days is Dark & Bright Cave / brunch / disembarkation.

At the end of each excursion, the speed boat will take you back to the anchorage near the city, when you will have lunch shortly after the new guests embark. From there awaits a daily afternoon of water activities.

7- Squid Fishing

Depending on your level of comfort with fishing, this can be a really neat thing to experience. We had never even heard of squid fishing, but squid is plentiful in Ha Long Bay and every night, sailors can fish with the crew. The squid is prepared fresh the following day and it is a very cool experience offered by Capella Cruise, where the kids are more than welcome to join!

8- Getting To Ha Long Made Easy

While we did not use the premium shuttle offered by Capella Cruise, know that it is available. It will pick you up in Hanoi city and drop you off at the cruise terminal, and take you back again after the cruise.

9- Daily Snacks and Happy Hour

Between water activities and dinner, there is about an hour of sailing. We recommend hitting the top decks for a 360-view and for free snacks.

The tropical fruits are amazing and plentiful and Capella Cruise adds some other finger food. It is best enjoyed watching the sun set on this UNESCO World Heritage Site, cocktail in hand, during the buy-2-get-1-free Happy Hour.

10- Daily Cooking Demonstrations

Every night, between Happy Hour and dinner is a cooking demonstration. A member of the crew will teach guests how to make the famous spring rolls. Sailors can partake in the class and roll their own rolls, which are later fried and enjoyed as the night falls!

Best Halong Bay Cruise For Families With Kids

While I am sure other cruise lines do a fine job at hosting families, we can’t recommend Capella Cruise enough when cruising overnight with kids on Halong Bay!

The crew is incredible, the Family Room is extraordinary, and the offerings are second to none. You will love the food, the kindness of the people, the included excursions, and all of the activities on board and in the water.

We have loved our 3 nights with Capella Cruise and can’t thank them enough for hosting us. All opinions are our own.
