2020 KTM 790 Adventure/Adventure R

KTM’s highly capable middleweight adventure.

ktm 790 suspension travel

Looking for a middleweight motorcycle with ultimate adventure chops ? KTM’s 790 Adventure or R model (with up-spec’d suspension) is one that will fit the bill. When the prototype was introduced at the 2017 EICMA , it caused quite a buzz in the ADV world with its off-road purpose. When it was released in 2018 , it was “Billed as the most hardcore of KTM’s Adventure line, the 790 Adventure R is fitted standard with tires and suspension capable of serious off-road duty.” While both models share the same 799cc LC8c motor, the R is primarily differentiated by its WP suspension with more adjustability and longer travel. The 790 Adventure and Adventure R are, as KTM says in its press material, “developed with the intent of adventure riding but to also be accessible for riders of all sizes, experience, and ability.”

2020 KTM 790 Adventure/Adventure R Reviews, Comparisons, And Competition

In our 2019 review of both models, Cycle World Senior Editor Justin Dawes covered that “No adventure motorcycle feels this thin between the rider’s knees, optimizing body positioning for aggressive off-road riding. You can toss the bike around like a big enduro, thanks to the compact chassis and narrow feel.” In regard to the engine, “Right off the bottom, a torquey yet controllable snap pushes the 790 forward with authority. Lofting the front end over obstacles requires just a slight tug at the clutch. The engine’s willing grunt is perfectly suited for negotiating technical terrain; all the power you need is right there off the bottom and midrange to tackle any issue that might arise on the trail.”

After talking about the suite of electronics, Dawes found, “All of this makes for an excellent adventure motorcycle, but the WP suspension takes the 790 Adventure R to a level that no other ADV has yet to achieve. This motorcycle is an off-road weapon, a wolf in orange clothing, and a revolution in the segment.”

The above praise is possibly enough to sell you on this motorcycle, but you also probably have tabs on Yamaha’s Super Ténéré ES , Yamaha Ténéré 700 , Honda’s Africa Twin , Suzuki’s V-Strom 650/XT , BMW’s F 850 GS , and Kawasaki’s Versys 650 .

KTM 790 Adventure/Adventure R Updates For 2020

No major updates for the models, however, for 2020 KTM introduced its limited-edition 790 Adventure R Rally which is limited to 500 units worldwide. It is based heavily on the 790 Adventure R, with the same chassis and engine, the major key difference is the addition of the fully adjustable WP Xplor Pro suspension. The Rally is topped off with additions like an Akrapovič exhaust, carbon fiber tank protectors, and Quickshifter+ as standard. While the standard 790 Adventure price starts at $12,699, the Adventure R is $13,699 and the Rally is $19,499.

2019 KTM 790 Adventure Review: The Pros and Cons

KTM 790 Adventure S placed in front of the beautiful Painted hills in Oregon

The new KTM 790 Adventure presents an excellent mix of on-road comfort with sporty handling, and off-road capability. Consider it a slightly more pavement-focused version of KTM’s new flagship bike that is the 790 Adventure R model.

Despite being the more pavement-focused of the two, the KTM 790 certainly isn't held back when it comes to its off-road credentials.

While it does have lower-spec forks with fewer tuning options, and a bit less ground clearance and suspension travel, it still manages to retain its true adventure credentials with the a dirty-worthy wheel set measuring 18 inches in the rear and 21 up front, and substantial amount of ground clearance and suspension travel when compared to others in its weight class.

Packing for your Motorcycle Trip

2019 KTM 790 Adventure S Pros

As far as adventure motorcycles go, the KTM 790 S performs incredibly well in a variety of on & off-pavement scenarios. Initially developed alongside the 790 Duke, the bike features heavy-duty componentry to help reduce the limits to where riders may go with it, and how far they can depend on it.

Camping out at Alvord Desert with the new KTM 790 Adventure

That said, let’s take a closer look at some points where the KTM 790 Adventure S shines.

 1. KTM 790 Adventure S Engine

The KTM 790 Adventure S is a mid-sized adventure motorcycle that uses the same LC8 799c parallel-twin engine used in the 790 Duke but with a revised mapping. It peaks at 95 hp at 8,000 rpm and 65ft/lb torque at 6,500 rpm which is almost the same as that of the BMW F850GS or the Honda Africa Twin. Being approximately so much lighter than the Honda or BMW though , the KTM definitely feels like a more responsive, nimble, and agile machine.

Closes up of the new KTM 790 adventure's engine

The 790's parallel-twin engine allows the bike to have a considerably low seat height without giving up on its overall ground clearance, which is at a full 9.2 inches. The seat is adjustable, and can be positioned at 32.7 inches or a more leg-roomy 33.5 inches .

Using practically the same engine as the 790 Duke, the same crank, cases, pistons, rods, and throttle bodies were implemented with a simple retuning by KTM to suit mid-range performance a bit better for long distance adventure travel.

Motorcycle Trip Checklist

Aside from that, KTM included two counterbalancers in the 790 Adventure S to keep vibrations down. And just like most modern engines on the market, its maintenance interval is generous, at a whopping 15,000 kilometers between valve adjustments. Depending on the extremes of off-pavement adventuring use and overall demands put on the engine, riders might want to increase that frequency of checks.

 2. TFT Display

As newer and more advanced bike models are displayed in showrooms, we’re seeing more and more advanced features and technology showing up. The same applies to the KTM 790 Adventure S. Basically, it’s filled with both visual and technical features that will make your riding experience a whole lot convenient, easier and informative.

TFT display on the new KTM 790 Adventure S

For starters, there’s the visually appealing TFT display in full color that's quite customizable so riders can decide on which information they want displayed. In addition, the display automatically adjusts depending on lighting conditions. With more basic displays on other adventure bikes, changes from cloud cover or tree canopy to direct sunlight aren't such a hindrance in a rider's ability to read the KTM's display.

Riding a ;long and winding road with a old barn in the distance.

The display has easy to flip through menu items, making it quick to find the specific information being sought.

It also comes with the option of KTM's My Ride feature that connects with phones, so riders can receive calls hands-free, and follow GPS directions on the bike’s TFT display.

 3. Low-Slung Fuel Tank

There’s nothing really remarkable about the 790 Adventure motorcycle ’s bodywork until we arrive at the gas tank. It's low-slung with a horseshoe-shaped design lobbing over each side of the engine. This keeps it well-balanced and even lowers the center of gravity, a helpful characteristic with low-speed stability and technical riding.

Eric points out the KTM 790's low slung fuel tank

Apart from the lower center of gravity, this design also offers protection for the bike’s engine, features easier maintenance due to easy access to the battery and air filter, prevents the bike from lying flat in case you go down , and comes with less bulk between your knees to allow for easier riding in the standing position. Riders around the world have for many years enjoyed the quirkiness of BMW's boxer engine, in that it can be cumbersome and bulky, but also supportive, and convenient. While not as pedestal-like as boxer cylinder head, the KTM's fuel tank does prop the bike up a bit as well.

When the photos and drawings of the engine’s design hit the internet, riders were a bit sketchy as to its practical application. Those who have tested the 790 Adventure are claiming that the tank holds up pretty well upon taking a beating.

photo of the underbelly protection on the KTM 790 Adventure

Despite being made of plastic, the material used for the tank is quite hard and durable enough to take a fair amount of abuse. Drop-testing it from various heights using metallic objects and other implements, KTM clearly felt it was tough-enough to hit the market.

Lastly, holding up to 5.3 gallons (20 liters) of fuel allows the KTM to run 280+ miles (450+ kilometers), if in optimal conditions and the advertised 53 miles per gallon is achieved.

 4. 21-Inch Front Wheel and 18-Inch Rear

The KTM 790 Adventure makes use of a tubeless wheel system at 21 inches for the front and 18 inches for the rear. Yet another feature pointing to its off-pavement prowess, when compared to other bikes with 19/17 combinations.

Garrett riding the KTM 790 Adventure out by Hart Mountain

Despite the large hoop that is its 21-inch front wheel, the Adventure S can remain quite stable through fast, paved twisties and sweepers, and all while giving the rider a larger footprint when it's time to head down that fire road. Additionally, braking remains consistent, thanks to its four-pot, opposed piston calipers.

New Call-to-action

In that regard, many riders don't end up spending nearly as much time off-pavement as they envision or hope for. With pavement being installed around the world, even your path to Starbucks and McDonald's may now be solid tarmac with a few tar snakes, so keep this in mind while shopping.

 5. Adjustable Windshield

The 790 Adventure motorcycle comes with a large and adjustable windshield to deflect windblasts at high speeds, and its 40mm of vertical adjustability can be taken advantage of in less than 30 seconds, after a few rounds of practice.

Riding the lonely roads of Oregon

Of course the size and shape of a windshield, wind direction and speed, the rider's torso, helmet of choice, direction heading, bike speed, posture, and other factors all go into the effectiveness of a windshield. That which KTM gave us to start with makes for pretty good wind deflection, while not being too obtrusive in slow, technical riding situations.

 6. Comfortable and Ergonomic Design

The Adventure S comes with an adjustable seat for riders of varying inseams or riding demands. Its simple, two-piece design for rider and passenger is easy to remove and adjust in less than a minute, and offers the right balance of width and firmness for feel and comfort.

Adventure Rider saying hello with a beautiful backdrop of the steen mountains

Frequencies and vibrations from the engine and terrain beneath are easily interpreted, with a dense foam that allows our pelvic "sit bones" to be relied upon. Instead of muscles and soft tissues supporting the rider, many riders will agree that long distance multi-day riding becomes more comfortable by applying weight and pressure where it needs to be, in those bones. - Not sure this is true? Everyone's different, but ask competitive road cyclists, many of whom ride on nothing more than a sheet of carbon fiber with a thin layer of leather on top, how important it is to be on those bones, instead of soft tissues. Yes, the first day or two can be sore, but your body will adapt.

 7. Excellent On-Road Performance

As mentioned earlier, the KTM 790 Adventure S performs extremely well for on-road conditions, while maintaining considerable prowess in the dirt. With its low center of gravity and low seat height, flipping back and forth in the twisties is easy and fun. Although it's not the most powerful adventure motorcycle in the market, the KTM's 95 hp engine has one of the better power-to-weight ratios in this category, and anyone with a basic understanding of physics knows how this plays out. Good luck getting to sleep the night before, when you know this jumper awaits you in the morning.

Garrett riding on pavement through the malheur national forest in Oregon

So we know she's got some power behind her but the stopping power is quite impressive as well with  it's massive 320mm twin discs straddled by 4 pot radial calipers up front which are responsive and strong, yet provide riders with feedback and 'feel' that allows us to maintain deft control. The rear wheel is fitted with a 260 mm disc alongside a twin pot caliper, again plenty strong and responsive as well.

 8. Useful Electronic Aids

The KTM 790 Adventure comes with various electronic aids, most notably three riding modes: Rain, Road, and Off-Road.

Garrett at the ready before hitting the trails.

The Rain mode provides us with a reduced power supply overall, as well as a quick MTC (motorcycle traction control) intervention. On the other hand, the Road mode offers a full 95 hp while maintaining wheelspin intervention. Lastly, the Off-Road mode offers some engine power reduction and minimal MTC intervention that can also be turned off based on preference. Riders also have the option to turn off ABS while in Off-Road mode.

International Motorcycle Travel Guide

Meanwhile, off-road ABS makes sure that its rear wheel is completely disengaged from ABS while making sure that limited ABS is still provided in its front wheel. As such, you can steer the bike using the rear wheel while keeping its front wheel from getting locked up, helping reduce the possibility of dreaded front wheel washouts.

Lastly, there’s the MSR (Motor Slip Regulation) feature which balances the engine's effect on the rear wheel when downshifting and engine braking. The system applies a bit of throttle to keep the rear wheel from dragging, if by chance you downshift too much, too soon. In symphony with the bike's MSC (Motorcycle Stability Control,) lean angles are also taken into consideration to avoid rear wheel slippage.

 9. Lighting

The KTM 790's LED lighting is a nice bonus for a yet reasonably-priced bike. Safe to say, we've all noticed how effective and clear night vision can be with such modern enhancements, so that KTM played along with these safety-conscious thoughts in mind speaks well to the overall value here.

 10. Durable Frame

The 790 Adventure’s frame is made of chrome-moly steel, which in itself is nothing exceptional. KTM’s knew that this bike was to be used by serious travelers though, some of them with passengers, and as such it's a bike that was meant to handle both plus luggage for long trips, over varying terrains. Be sure to refer to those limitations however in your owner's manual.

2019 KTM 790 Adventure S Cons

Despite being the incredible machine that the KTM 790 Adventure is, there are certain aspects of this bike that other riders, and even you, might not like. Let’s get straight into what these downsides are.

 1. Inaccurate Fuel Gauge

One of the areas where the KTM 790 Adventure should improve upon is its tricky, partially, uninformative fuel gauge. Just by the nature of having a split-style fuel tank slung over the engine and frame, considerably more-complicated (expensive) componentry would be needed to get readings on the first half of fuel level.

Eric points out the KTM 790's half fuel gauge

In order to get an accurate measurement of your current fuel level, you’ll have to burn through more than half of the tank

While it may not sound too much of a big deal for some, this of course can be a hassle. Maybe it's been a while since riding, and you're not quite sure what the fuel level would be on the 'top half' of the tank, or of course the mere possibility of forgetting that the gauge is only showing the bottom half ... there is room for some inconvenience, or worse, being stranded without fuel on occasion.

 2. Resetting of Traction Control and ABS Settings

Another issue we've found while testing the KTM 790 Adventure is losing all the settings upon hitting the killswitch, turning the key off, or accidentally killing the engine from low-revs. The bike's Traction Control and ABS settings are excellent for safety and other ride enhancement reasons, however, at least on the 1st 790 Adventure S we bought from KTM, it's quite an annoyance having to reset those every time the engine is stopped.

Eric points out the killswitch issue on the bike

A trailside chat with a friend for a few minutes turns into an extra 20 seconds of clicking around each time you restart the engine, if returning to the same settings. Might not sound like much, but it sure can be annoying. - Now, some riders have reported that their 790 Adventure S models do maintain these settings when the engine is shut off. Others have claimed that installing the Rally mode software also allows the bike to maintain settings. At the time of this posting, and even after researching with KTM, we have not been able to confirm the truth about this confusing inconvenience.

 3. The Suspension is Only Adjustable from the Rear Preload Standpoint

The 790 Adventure stands atop 43mm WP Apex forks up front, and a WP Apex PDS (Progressive Dampening System) shock out back. While there isn't any adjustability in the front, and only rear shock preload adjustability, we've been thoroughly impressed with how these components gobble-up the terrain below us. KTM did include a spanner wrench to make rear preload adjustments pretty quick and easy.

Eric down low and pointing towards the ktm 790 adventure s's suspension

KTM 790 Adventure S Overall

Overall, the KTM 790 Adventure S can be classified as having an excellent combination of on and off-pavement capabilities when compared to other adventure motorcycles in this mid-size category. Others in its class have significantly less power, but also less ground clearance and suspension travel, again part of what makes the KTM such an extremely capable and versatile bike.

Eric rippin' the trails on the KTM 790 Adventure S in Oregon's backcountry

With its launching in Morocco, specifically in a location that KTM regularly uses for elite rally training, it’s easy to see who the 790 Adventure is aimed at and what it’s capable of doing. However, despite its dynamic excellence in both off-road and on-road conditions, the KTM 790 Adventure isn’t all that perfect . In fact, it might even struggle when pitted against other bikes in British showrooms where most riders prefer a softer and more accommodating bike for long-distance rides such as the Honda Africa Twin or the BMW R1200GS. There’s also Triumph’s Tiger 800 XR and the BMW F850GS which hold up well when compared to this KTM.

Despite all that, the KTM 790 Adventure S bike’s parallel-twin engine , sporty design, great handling, durable tank, comfortable low seat height, and big bike power feel are more than enough to earn it a spot in the best adventure motorcycles on the market. Again, especially for those who just aren't interested in the big 1200cc category, this may be your perfect bike.

KTM 790 ADVENTURE (2023 - on) Review

2023 KTM 790 Adventure review

  • The first entirely Chinese-built KTM-branded parallel twin model
  • 93.9bhp parallel-twin engine updated from original 790
  • Able to be restricted to A2-legal if required

At a glance

Overall rating.

In a bold move by KTM, the new 790 Adventure (and 790 Duke) is built in its entirety (including its engine) by CFMoto in China and not KTM in Austria like their other adventure bikes .

This cost-saving decision has seen KTM able to offer the 790 Adventure at under £10,000, putting it head-to-head with the new breed of middleweight adventure bike rivals from Japan.

Not only that, as the 790 engine makes less power than the 890, it can be restricted down for A2 licence holders where the 890 can’t, expanding its potential customer base. Is KTM’s decision to outsource the production a smart one? On the evidence of the 790 Adventure, you have to say so.

2023 KTM 790 Adventure right side

A really impressive middleweight adventure bike, the 790 Adventure comes with angle-responsive electronics as standard, something all its Japanese-built rivals lack, as well as the option of adding cruise control, again a feature noticeable by its absence on the Yamaha Ténéré 700 , the new Honda Transalp and the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE .

Great fun to ride with excellent suspension and a strong motor, there is little to dislike about the 790 Adventure and lots to really admire. Does it matter who actually built it? Not really, the world is now a global marketplace and what’s more important is its fundamental design and ensuring the quality of the final product doesn’t slip.

If KTM can keep a tight rein on these aspects, and there is no reason why they can’t, the 790 Adventure is a really good middleweight adventure bike with an impressively high spec list and very competitive price tag that just happens to be built in China and not Austria. The ‘demo mode’ will inevitably lead to disgruntled customers but that’s a small black mark against an otherwise very good machine.

2023 KTM 790 Adventure o the road

Ride quality & brakes

Despite the WP APEX forks and shock being a generation behind the units used on the upgraded 2023 KTM 890 Adventure, on the road they perform excellently.

The forks lack any adjustability and the shock only gets adjustable spring preload with but the quality of the damping is so good you don’t really feel the need to fiddle with settings. Delivering just the right amount of travel to absorb bumps but lacking any pitching sensation unless you are really upping the pace, the 790 is beautifully composed on its suspension and a joy to ride with a really agile chassis.

It’s also nice to see KTM have armed it with twin four-piston radial brakes, braided lines and quality Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres, an area they could have skimped on to save cash but haven’t. With a 20-litre tank, the 790 Adventure should be good for over 200-mile stints between fill-ups and ergonomically it is a comfortable bike.

2023 KTM 790 Adventure cornering

The 790 engine is not a lower-capacity 890 motor, it is based around the previous generation of parallel twin’s architecture, however KTM have upgraded it for use in the new 790 models.

Now featuring a 20% increase in rotating mass, reworked throttle bodies and revised ECU settings, these small refinements have had a significant effect on its character. Far more refined than the rattly old 790, the new motor still has a bit of welcome KTM spirit but it is less mechanically noisy and much smoother to ride. And fast.

More powerful than all of its middleweight rivals, the 790 drives strongly from everywhere in its rev range with lots of low-end grunt where the Honda Transalp can feel a bit lacking, more excitement than the flat-feeling Yamaha Ténéré and even better performance than the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE.

2023 KTM 790 Adventure engine

For slow speed work the 790 features an updated clutch, which is lovely and light in its action, and the improved Quickshifter+ system has a positive action in both directions. But you need to pay extra for the downshift function, which is annoying...

Reliability & build quality

The obvious question is whether the 790 looks or feels a Chinese-built product compared to an Austrian-built one (all 890s are built in Austria, including their engines) and the answer is simple – no. The 790 Adventure looks, feels and rides every bit an Austrian-built model.

There are no visible stickers signifying its origin, the finish appears good and it has neat touches such as span-adjustable brake and clutch levers, a proper tool kit, Pirelli tyres and an adjustable seat height that makes it feel a high quality product with no corners cut. Unless you know your KTM models, you would assume it came out of Mattighofen and not Hangzhou.

It is worth also noting that KTM have been working with CFMoto since 2013 and in 2021 CFMoto opened a dedicated KTM production facility in China, which aims to produce its 350,000th bike this year! And CFMoto are hardly amateurs when it comes to building vehicles as they make over 600,000 of them (motorcycles, ATVs and side-by-sides) a year! But what of reliability?

2023 KTM 790 Adventure onboard

Owners report that KTM’s vehicles aren’t the most reliable and that is a bit of a worry. As KTM have upgraded the 790 engine you have to assume they will have also addressed any known issues with the motor but reliability is a bit of a concern. A two-year warranty is standard.

Value vs rivals

At £9999 the 2023 790 Adventure is £2000 cheaper than the KTM 890 Adventure and also very comparable to the Japanese-built middleweight adventure bikes.

The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is £111 more than the 790 and lacks most of the KTM’s electronics while the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is £666 more but comes with up/down shifter as standard.

The Honda Transalp is the cheapest middleweight at £9499 but a quickshifter (up and down) is an extra £240, although connectivity is standard. None of the Japanese bikes have angle-responsive safety systems or the option of cruise control.

2023 KTM 790 Adventure WP Apex fork

When it comes to running costs, the 790 Adventure has long 9300-mile service intervals with a valve-clearance check at the 18,600-mile service.

The 790 Adventure comes with KTM’s ‘demo mode’, which will cause issues between customers and dealers. As standard you get cornering ABS (with off-road mode) and angle-responsive traction control as well as three rider modes (Road, Rain and Off-road) and an upshifter.

But ‘demo mode’ gives you access to all the optional extras, which include cruise control, a downshifter, Rally power mode and MSR– but only for 930 miles until it automatically turns off.

After this point, you need to pay extra for either each function separately (cruise control is £252.79, Quickshifter+ is £361.51, etc) or buy the £859.87 Tech Pack. These hidden costs do tend to stick in the throat somewhat.

2023 KTM 790 Adventure TFT dash

Also, adding connectivity to the TFT dash is £144.96 extra. A centre stand is a £180.36 extra. On a positive note, the KTM arrives on quality Pirelli Scorpion STR tyres, has braided brake lines with radial four-piston calipers, adjustable span brake and clutch levers, a comprehensive toolkit and adjustable seat height.

Review your KTM 790 ADVENTURE (2023 - on)

Annual servicing cost: £250

A good all round bike on and off road. A hefty £2000 cheaper than the 890 but with little compromise. Finish and build quality as good as any Austrian made bike.

A really good all round bike - rally mode gives the trademark KTM 'hooligan' feel to the ride. 2 up no problem at all.

Broad spread of torque from low revs with more than adequate power unless you are in the MotoGP! Engine can sound a little rattly but not really an issue.

Too early to comment on reliabilty but my previous KTM had no issues.

Average costs compared to other manufacturers.

Tyres fitted from new are road biased. Recommend tech pack which includes several riding modes, variable traction control and cruise control. Additional price of these is a good bargaining point for any deals.

Buying experience: Boiught from the local dealer at a very competitive price when compared to similar bikes from other dealers/manufacturers.

I'm from Lisbon Portugal, 3 weeks of honership, just a small issue of eletronic calibration when in reserv the engine started to malfunction, dealership quickly solved it. Apart from that a great bike for the money, comes with all the bells and whistles, beside what MCN reported ad up things like iluminated buttons and steering dumper.

Strong breaks, Cornering ABS and TC, etc. Good seating position just slightly fowardly, could do with a slightly bigger windsheeld. Tubeless tyres are an ease of mind.

Yes it will do over 200kms/h and is fast reeving. Economy expect 4.2 ltr/100. Not 5* because there is a small lag in the lower revs, but again, as more go than any japonese or Tuareg of is class. And, like all euro5 motors yes sends heat to your legs at any signal stop.

So far so good. Had a KTM 990 before (a very different beast) and an upgrade in preceved quality is very noticiable.

To soon to tell but valve clearance wiil cost arround 500€ as informed by dealership.

As it all you name it, just have to part with adjustble suspension (890 or R) and demo mode that after some miles makes U pay again form what U allready are using (in all fairness KTM is giving us a choice to see and taste before buying I get it... but...)

Buying experience: Dealership in Benfica Lisbon is a 5* and I strongly recomend a visit to all...

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

01. Drivetrain

ktm 790 suspension travel

This fully electric, battery-powered air-cooled permanent magnet motor features an extremely compact and slim design that perfectly matches the KTM SX-E 5's smaller chassis. It's also dust and waterproof which makes it wear and maintenance-free, while the integrated control unit (ECU) guarantees a direct, but very controllable power delivery.

02. Chassis

ktm 790 suspension travel

The KTM SX-E 5 has a modern frame design that is made of lightweight, high-strength Chromoly steel profiles and combines maximum longitudinal stiffness with optimum torsional rigidity. The subframe is made of lightweight, fiber-glass reinforced extruded plastic elements, which can be mounted in two positions for different seat heights. This means that the KTM SX-E 5 can 'grow' with your young racer.

ktm 790 suspension travel

Like the full-size KTM Factory racers, the 2024 KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with lightweight, black anodized, aluminum rims which provide the highest strength and durability for any eventuality. These are wrapped in MAXXIS MX-ST tires, to provide unmatched traction on any surface.

ktm 790 suspension travel

Front suspension

The KTM SX-E 5 boasts a fully adjustable, upside-down WP XACT air fork with a 35 mm tube diameter and 205 mm of travel. This ensures outstanding comfort, damping characteristics, and directional stability. Another main benefit for junior riders is that the air spring fitted in the left fork leg can be adjusted perfectly to the rider's weight using a simple air pump.

ktm 790 suspension travel

Rear suspension

The high-quality WP XACT shock absorber is linked directly to the cast swingarm, providing excellent damping performance. It is fully adjustable, meaning you can set the damping perfectly to suit the rider's preference and track conditions. The shock absorber allows for 185 mm of rear-wheel travel.

ktm 790 suspension travel

The KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with front and rear hydraulic brakes by FORMULA, combined with lightweight wave discs that are easy to control even for the youngest riders, helping to build thier confidence, and taching them correct brake control.

03. Ergonomics & comfort

ktm 790 suspension travel

The KTM SX-E 5 uses high-quality tapered NEKEN handlebars, made of aluminum alloy ensuring top stability and safety. Its diameter tapers from 28 mm in the central area, to 22 mm in the bends, to 18 mm in the handhold area. This allows for a thinner lock-on ODI grip to be mounted on the left side while the right side features a throttle assembly with a vulcanized ODI grip, specifically developed for the electronic drive. An additional crash pad on the handlebar brace protects the rider from rough contact.

ktm 790 suspension travel

Seat height

The seat height on the KTM SX-E 5 can be adjusted to multiple levels. The standard model comes with a seat height of 665 mm, which can easily be reduced to 615 mm in two easy steps by lowering the bodywork and seat and mounting the rear shock in an alternative position. The front fork can also be lowered in the triple clamps. Additionally, by using a Suspension Lowering Kit from the KTM PowerParts catalog, the suspension can be further lowered for a minimum seat height of only 560 mm which accommodates the smallest riders of four years old or even younger.

04. Bodyworks & Graphics

ktm 790 suspension travel

The 2024 KTM SX-E 5 features the latest in-mold graphics, with a bold orange and blue design that perfectly sets off the factory-look orange frame, orange seat and and race-sharpened bodywork.

05. Software & Electronics

ktm 790 suspension travel

A multifunctional instrument display is located between the steering head and seat. Here, the user can select between the six different ride modes. Each mode offers different power characteristics suited for pure beginners all the way up to experienced racers. The instrument also displays the remaining charge of the battery.

ktm 790 suspension travel

The KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with 84 modern lithium-ion cells in a robust die-cast aluminum casing that is mounted just above the electric motor. This means the stored energy is 907 Wh, which is enough for more than two hours of riding for a beginner and approximately 25 min full-throttle racing, depending on conditions and terrain. The integrated battery management system (BMS) ensures the safety and longevity of the battery pack.

ktm 790 suspension travel

The KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with a rollover sensor that cuts off the power in the event of a fall, while a wrist lanyard cut-off key stops the motor in the event of an uncontrollable riding scenario. For further safety measures, the ride modes can be locked and saved with a dongle located below the seat. This prevents younger, less experienced riders from changing to more powerful ride modes on their own.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

ktm 790 suspension travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

ktm 790 suspension travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

ktm 790 suspension travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

ktm 790 suspension travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

ktm 790 suspension travel

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
