Short Term Visa

If you want to visit Sweden and you are not a citizen of the EU/EEA, you may need a visa. A visa gives you permission to enter and stay in Sweden for a short period. It is valid throughout the Schengen area, but you apply to the country that is the main destination for the journey.

Visas can be granted for such purposes as:

  • Business visits
  • Participation in cultural or sporting events
  • Visits to relatives and friends

You can submit your application at the earliest three months before your planned visit. Apply as far in advance as possible, especially during the peak season. Usually, you get a decision within two weeks.

A visa can be granted for between 1 and 90 days. You have to make use of these days within a given time frame of six months at the most (period of validity).

How many days you are allowed to stay in the Schengen area, and for how long altogether, is stated on the permit sticker attached to your travel document.

If you need to travel to Sweden often, you can ask to be given several entries. Such visas are valid for five years at the most. If the visa is for more than six months, you can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days per six-month period.

A visa does not automatically mean you can enter the Schengen area. Entry checks are always made at external border points. So it is a good idea to bring along copies of the documents you submitted when applying for a visa. Border controls may result in your being denied entry.

It is the Embassy of Sweden that decides whether you are to be granted a visa. In certain cases, the matter is referred to the Swedish Migration Board for a decision.

Applicants should note that the Embassy of Sweden requires all documents to be in original. If you need the original document to be returned to you, you must provide a copy of the document when submitting your application at the application centre.

Late entry (applies only to single-entry visas) : If you have a single-entry visa and experience a delayed entry into Sweden due to unforeseen circumstances, you may be eligible for an extension.

Humanitarian reasons: Local authorities may consider visa extensions for humanitarian purposes, such as requiring additional medical treatment, attending a funeral, or supporting a family member facing hardship.

Force Majeure: In the event of unforeseeable circumstances beyond your control, including natural disasters, violent protests, or extreme weather conditions, an extension may be granted.

Important personal reasons: The government may grant a visa extension due to significant personal events that weren’t planned, such as a family member’s unplanned wedding.

It's important to note that each extension request is evaluated case-by-case, and sufficient evidence supporting your exceptional circumstances will be required.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A welding operation sparked a huge fire in February at a water park that was under construction at one of Sweden’s biggest amusement centers, causing the death of one person, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

“When welding the water slide, a fire started which then spread to the rest of the building. The fire spread quickly and caused great destruction,” the Goteborgs-Posten newspaper said, quoting a police report.

The blaze destroyed a large part of the Oceana water park that was scheduled to open this summer in Goteborg, Sweden’s second-largest city. Officers were only able to enter the site days later and found a dead person there.

The fire at the popular Liseberg amusement complex spread over several water slides and the pool area of the water park. A nearby hotel and office facilities had to be evacuated. Sixteen were slightly injured.

Joint statement by Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States following their visit to the Rohingya Refugee Camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

This statement has been issued by the Governments of Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States

Joint statement by Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States following their visit to the Rohingya Refugee Camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

To Rohingya Refugees we say: You are not forgotten

As representatives of government donors, we underscore the urgent need for sustained international support to protect and save the lives of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. This crisis is now in its seventh year and the needs of this vulnerable population persist, while funding from the international community dramatically decreases.

In 2023 alone, the Joint Response Plan reported a funding gap of USD 301 million. This reduction in funding has led to distressing adjustments in assistance packages, including reductions in food rations, exacerbating food insecurity and increasing vulnerability to exploitation.

We appreciate Bangladesh's dedication to generously hosting one million refugees. However, it is imperative for us to take action to ensure that Rohingya refugees and host communities receive the support and protection they deserve. As we observed during our visit, Rohingyas are bearing the brunt of decreasing humanitarian resources, while nearly half a million Rohingyas will soon be exposed to harsh weather conditions as fire and monsoon season approaches.

If insufficient funding continues, over 150,000 won’t be able to access essential services, including food, safe drinking water, shelter, protection, and healthcare. In addition, in lieu of Liquid Petroleum Gas, nearly 100,000 households will likely resort to collecting firewood, leading to potentially 14,000 tons of firewood being extracted monthly in the region, leading to deforestation and negative environmental impacts.

We can and must reverse this trend.

Under the leadership of the Government of Bangladesh, lifesaving assistance continues to be delivered to one million Rohingya refugees and some 346,000 Bangladeshis. Efforts to promote self-reliance and livelihood opportunities for Rohingya are crucial to reduce their full aid dependency, for their well-being, and that of their host communities.

To contribute to a more sustainable humanitarian response, the international community must support the Joint Response Plan 2024, which aims to raise USD 852.4 million to support 1.35 million people, including Rohingya refugees and vulnerable Bangladeshis. This represents USD 630 per person.

In closing, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Bangladesh and those in need. We continue to support our humanitarian partners who are at the frontlines of implementing the Plan. We call on other governments and partners to join us in providing the necessary funding and assistance to ensure the protection and well-being of those most impacted and to address the root causes of the crisis.

The Rohingya crisis shall not be forgotten.

Following their visit to Cox’s Bazar, the following governments have announced their contributions and support for IOM’s Appeal under the 2024 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis:

  • The United States has announced a contribution of USD 7.6 million
  • Japan has already contributed USD 2.6 Million
  • Norway has announced a contribution of NOK 6.5 million

The following countries have expressed political support for this Joint Statement and for the 2024 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis:

  • Switzerland

HINGLAJ, Pakistan (AP) — The ascent of steep mud volcanoes marks the start of Hindu pilgrims’ religious rituals in southwestern Pakistan.

They climb hundreds of stairs or clamber over rocks to reach the summit, tossing coconuts and rose petals into the shallow crater while seeking divine permission to visit Hinglaj Mata, an ancient cave temple that is the focus of their three-day worship.

The dramatic surroundings of Hingol National Park in Baluchistan province are the setting for Pakistan’s largest Hindu festival, Hinglaj Yatra, which started on Friday and ends on Sunday. Organizers say more than 100,000 Hindus are expected to participate.

Muslim-majority Pakistan is home to 4.4 million Hindus, just 2.14% of the population, and Hinglaj Mata is one of the few Hindu sites that continues to draw large numbers of pilgrims every year from across the country.

Muslims and Hindus generally live peacefully in Pakistan, from where most of the Hindus migrated to India when it was divided by British colonialists in 1947. But there have been attacks on Hindu temples in recent years as relations between the rivals remain tense.

Hindus believe Hinglaj Mata is one the places where the remains of Sati, the goddess of marital felicity and longevity, fell to earth after she ended her life.

Maharaj Gopal, the temple’s most senior cleric, explains why people flock to it.

“It is the most sacred pilgrimage in the Hindu religion,” said Gopal. “Whoever visits the temple and worships accordingly during these three days will have all of their sins forgiven.”

The journeys begin hundreds of kilometres (miles) away, mostly from neighbouring Sindh province . Hundreds of packed buses set off from cities like Hyderabad and Karachi, traveling along the Makran Coastal Highway that hugs Pakistan’s south and southwest.

But there’s scant parking and vehicular access to the holy sites, so many pilgrims disembark and complete their travel by walking over parched and rocky terrain, sometimes barefoot and carrying children or luggage.

It’s a few kilometres (miles) from the main road to the mud volcano and then, from there, almost 45 kilometres (25 miles) to Hinglaj Mata.

Winds buffet the desert-like conditions, churning up dust that whips the eyes, nose and mouth. The pilgrims’ festive cheer and brightly coloured apparel are a contrast to the arid landscape. Strong gusts distort people’s celebratory cries of “Jai mata di” and “Jai shiv shankar.”

Kanwal Kumar, 28, was visiting the temple for the first time with her husband. “We have yet to conceive a child after six years of marriage, so we are hopeful for help from the goddess,” she said. “We believe that no one returns empty-handed. All wishes are granted by Hinglaj Mata.”

The Hindu festival brings the Pakistani park to life. Hundreds of stalls spring up to sell snacks, drinks, jewellery, and clothing. Vats of hot food are prepared in the open air or thatched huts. Pilgrims purchase coconuts, sweetmeats, flowers, and incense for their ritualistic offerings.

Aloo Kumar, 55, wanted to express her gratitude to Lord Shiva, one of Hinduism’s three most important deities. “He blessed our family with a grandson,” Kumar said, gesturing toward the boy beside her cradling his baby sibling. “We prayed for a grandson during last year’s festival.”

Hinglaj Mata thrums with activity, even after dark. Fairy lights and other decorations adorn the shrine and pilgrims jostle for position in front of it, sometimes holding up babies so the deities can bless them. Stewards urge them to pay their respects and move along.

The park’s Hingol River provides Hindu pilgrims with the opportunity for ritual bathing, like the Ganges in India.

While there is no ban on Hindu worship in Pakistan, openly practising the faith is not routine as ties between India and Pakistan are broken. Their interactions are riddled with animosity and suspicion after having fought three wars, built up their armies and armed them with nuclear weapons.

Travel restrictions and hostile bureaucracies largely keep people from crossing the border for leisure, study and work, although the countries sometimes make exceptions for religious pilgrimages, usually for India’s Sikhs .

The decades of political hostility present a challenge for the minority Hindu community, as many in Pakistan equate Hindus with India. The reverse exists in India, where Muslims complain of discrimination.

Versimal Divani, the general-secretary of Hinglaj Mata, lamented that only Hindus in Pakistan can attend the festival.

“We can visit this temple in our beloved country whenever our heart desires,” said Divani. “But this is not the case for the rest of the world’s Hindus. I would like the Pakistani government to issue them visas so they can come here and take blessings with them. It’s good for people-to-people contact and it’s good for the economy too.”

The world's glitziest song contest starts this week. Here's what you need to know about Eurovision.

Ireland's Bambie Thug rehearses at Malmö Arena in Sweden. Eurovision is perhaps best known for off-the-wall entries that feature eccentric musical styling and outrageous performances.

This year, Eurovision will be held in Malmö , Sweden, and already fans are descending on the country’s third-largest city, decked out in sequins, glitter, skin-tight metallics or neon, some of them with their country’s flags painted on their faces or draped around their shoulders.

For fans, it’s a yearlong buildup to this weeklong party . For viewers across Europe and around the world, the contest will be shown over three days next week.

Artists from 37 countries across Europe and beyond will perform original songs — ranging from soaring power ballads to the bombastically ridiculous — to compete for the public’s vote, before a winner is chosen in a high-drama Grand Final.

The glittery, pyrotechnic-filled spectacle draws in around 160 million viewers, making it the world’s most-watched nonsports event — surpassed only by the Olympics and the World Cup.

In fact, Eurovision is often likened to the Olympics of pop music. Paul Jordan, a superfan who wrote his Ph.D. on the contest, said: “They’ve got the spectacle of the opening ceremony. You’ve got the drama of the podium.”

“If you haven’t seen it or heard of it, you’re probably living in a sad world,” Silvester Belt, this year’s entrant from Lithuania, told NBC News. “It’s the funniest and most awkward, cringiest and fun event in the world. I don’t think there’s anything like [it].”

Image: SWEDEN-MUSIC-AWARD-EUROVISION

The first Eurovision was in 1956. Seven countries participated in what was essentially a technical experiment — national broadcasting organizations of the early TV era wanted to know if they could pull off a live, simultaneous, transnational broadcast. The show’s format was copied from a popular Italian song contest called San Remo and evolved from there.

Eurovision proved to be a success, both technologically and culturally. Seven decades later, Eurovision is more beloved than ever, moving beyond TV to spawn a vast ecosystem of superfan blogs and social media accounts breathlessly covering its every development.

Today, Eurovision features most of Europe and some countries farther afield like Israel , Azerbaijan and Australia.

When is it?

First semifinal: Tuesday, May 7, at 3 p.m. ET.

Second semifinal: Thursday, May 9, at 3 p.m. ET.

Grand Final: Saturday, May 11, at 3 p.m. ET.

In the U.S., the shows are available to watch on Peacock.

How does it work?

Eurovision is divided into two semifinals and a Grand Final. Fifteen countries perform their song in the first semifinal, and 16 in the second. After each semifinal, viewers at home vote for their favorites, and the top 10 from each go through to the Grand Final.

In total, there are 26 performances in the Grand Final: the winners of the semifinals, plus the host country (this year, Sweden) and a group called the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — which enter the final automatically because their countries make the biggest financial contributions to Eurovision.

The winner of the Grand Final is decided by a combination of a popular vote from viewers and an official Eurovision jury.

Each artist performs only one song throughout the contest. The songs can be in any language but are limited to three minutes. Lead vocals must be performed live, and there cannot be more than six people onstage during the performance.

How to vote

Viewers at home can vote by phone or text or via the official Eurovision app.

Voters from countries participating in the contest can’t vote for their own act, but even fans from places that don’t take part in Eurovision can have their say. Voting in the app or on a website, viewers from around the world make up a “rest of the world” category that equals one participating nation. Once Eurovision is up and running, this website will become active and allow viewers outside Eurovision nations to vote: www.esc.vote.

Stage for Eurovision 2024.

For the final, viewers vote for their favorite out of the 26 remaining contestants, and the popular vote is combined with votes from juries of music industry professionals from each participating country.

Presenters, hamming up the anticipation in a drawn-out process, announce the juries’ votes country by country, building tension as a few acts take the lead.

Then the real drama begins when the popular vote is revealed. As the popular votes are read out, the leaderboard can swing dramatically. In recent years, the jury and the public voted for different winners, meaning the act in the lead after the jury vote is in no way guaranteed to stay on top once the public has its say.

The winner is presented with a trophy and much glory for having won Eurovision. The country they represent will host the next year’s contest.

A variety of styles

Part of the joy of Eurovision is the sheer range of songs, often making for strange bedfellows with discordant musical styles performing back to back.

“Every single person on Earth can find something in Eurovision,” Belt, the Lithuanian singer, said.

Bambie Thug, this year’s entry from Ireland, calls their goth-inflected genre “Ouija-pop.” Their entry “Doomsday Blue” alternates between frantic growling and screaming and laid-back singing in the chorus.

Image: NETHERLANDS-MUSIC-EUROVISION

Denmark’s Saba shows off her powerful vocals in “Sand,” a classic breakup ballad. The Czech entry, Aiko, sounds like her musical style was inspired by American pop - rock, while Austria’s entry is a Europop dance anthem that eschews subtlety with its title “We Will Rave.”

And then there are the off-the-wall entries that Eurovision is perhaps best known for, featuring eccentric musical styling and staging.

Iconic performances of past decades have included a group of Russian babushkas, a Finnish heavy metal band dressed as monsters, and a bearded Austrian drag queen singing what could have been a James Bond theme song.

“I think that the majority is in it to win it,” Eurovision co-host Petra Mede said, but some countries focus less on sending a strong singer, and more on a memorable performance that will have people talking, providing a “spectacular entry. And they know that they’re not going to win, but they’re going to give us a good three minutes.”

“I think there’s a couple of quirky ones,” said Jordan, the superfan who wrote a dissertation on Eurovision, inspired by last year’s runner-up, a chaotic performance called “Cha Cha Cha” by Finland’s Käärijä, who leapt around the stage in a puffy neon green outfit shouting “cha cha cha” between high-energy lyrics in Finnish about hitting the dance floor after a long week at work.

“I think there’s a few that have tried to emulate that success,” Jordan said.

He says “Europapa” by the Netherlands’ Joost Klein is one to watch. “It’s insanely catchy. It’s gone viral online. I can imagine people around Europe will be voting for that, they’ll be having parties, they’ll be loving it.”

Image: NETHERLANDS-MUSIC-EUROVISION

Klein performs in a blue suit with exaggerated pointy shoulder pads, with backup dancers who include a person in a bird costume wearing an E.U.-logo tie.

“Rim Tim Tagi Dim” by Croatia’s Baby Lasagna is also drawing attention. The high-energy song about leaving the countryside for city life is a buzzy way of putting a spotlight on the issue of Croatia’s brain drain.

Favorites to win

Winners of the contest come from all over the musical spectrum. In the past decade, successful genres have included pop from Sweden, jazz from Portugal, and rock from Italy.

Jordan says that unlike previous years when there were heavy favorites, “it seems to be really open this year. There doesn’t seem to be a runaway winner.”

Image: NETHERLANDS-MUSIC-EUROVISION

Some to watch include Switzerland’s “The Code” by Nemo, which is about the singer’s journey of discovering their nonbinary identity, and Italy’s Angelina Mango. Her entry, “La Noia,” which translates to “The Boredom,” is inspired by the cumbia music of Latin America.

The quirky Dutch and Croatian entries are also likely to be favorites with viewers at home, with splashy performances that can help them stand out in the crowded field.

The public and the juries often diverge on who they think should win, with votes from the jury tending to reward musical prowess while votes from the public are often swayed by spectacle.

Jordan says Ukraine “can never really be discounted — they know how to stage a song,” and are the only country currently in the competition that has always gone through to the final from the semis. Ukraine has won Eurovision three times since it joined the contest in 2003, and the Ukrainian entry usually finishes in the top 10.

Legendary pop singers have emerged from the Eurovision gantlet: Fifty years ago, then-little-known Swedish band ABBA won with “Waterloo,” a song that has since entered the ranks of pop classics. In 1988, a young Céline Dion was launched into fame when she won for Switzerland with the song “Ne partez pas sans moi.”

Regardless of whether this year’s artists will be the next ABBA, Jordan says Eurovision will endure. “It’s a format that’s so old now — nearly 70 years old, and yet it’s still surviving. And that’s amazing. Really, given all the changes in people’s viewing habits, Eurovision has really captured our imagination.”
