We are experienced travelers who have been all over the world but our trip to Sicily last May was really something special. "Wine Tour in Sicily" designed and completely customized a private tour for our group of eight friends that exceeded our expectations. From the state of the art wineries where we were served gourmet food and wine pairings, to the wonderful accommodations, to the amazing World Heritage sites and the expert private tour guides who made history come alive for us --- to the fabulous food and wine we enjoyed all over Sicily --- every aspect of our trip was first rate. Our tour lasted eight days and there is not one thing we would have changed or done differently. Our itinerary unfolded like clockwork. Everyone was ready for us and on time and every little detail was taken care of. Even our spacious private tour bus and our friendly, English speaking driver were much appreciated by our group. "Wine tour in Sicily" gave us the perfect mix of wine, food, history, gorgeous scenery and culture ---- truly a trip of a lifetime! Judi M.

Unforgettable wine tours in Sicily
Sicily is one of the largest and most productive wine regions in Italy, with over 100,000 hectares under vine. The island with its classic Mediterranean climate has a long history of viticulture and a long-standing reputation as a food and wine paradise. Its most famous wine in antiquity was the deeply coloured Mamertino, a favourite of Emperor Julius Caesar, thought to have been produced from the Nocera variety from the north-eastern part of the island.
Tours Suggestion in Sicily
Sicily has a wealth of indigenous grapes to discover, ensuring wine tours in Sicily will offer something new to even the most seasoned of wine tourists. Along with its signature red grape, Nero D’Avola , also known locally as Calabrese, this sun-drenched island is also home to white varieties such as Catarratto, Carricante, Grillo, Inzolia, Grecanico, Malvasia di Lipari and various Moscatos. Sicily also has its fair share of reds including Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Frappato and Perricone. Naturally, international varieties have also achieved success here, with Syrah finding the hot climate especially to its liking.
As the Mediterranean’s largest island with a history as the crossroads of trade and commerce, its appealing mix of civilisations and wide range of terroirs, it offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking unique wine tours. Sicily has 20 appellations, known as Denominazione di Origine Controllata (e Garantita) – DOC or DOCG – and one which covers the whole of the island, Sicilia DOC . Wines sold under these appellations are strictly controlled for quality.
Some of Italy’s highest vineyards can be found on the fertile slopes of Etna, a still active volcano , where Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio give rise to Etna Rosso, whereas Carricante and Catarratto form the backbone of Etna Bianco. Near to Etna you can also take in breath-taking coastlines and visit the ruins of the Roman theatre in Taormina with spectacular views over the crystal-clear sea.
The south of the island gives you the opportunity to explore ancient Greek temples near Agrigento, visit the historic port of Siracusa and wander the streets of the well-preserved Baroque towns of Noto and Ragusa before savouring some Nero D’Avola or Cerasuolo di Vittoria reds. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is Sicily’s only DOCG and is made from a blend of Nero D’Avola and Frappato, a light, refreshing raspberry-scented variety. Siracusa and Noto are also famed for their sweet Moscatos. Indeed prior to the red wine revolution of the nineties, Sicily was more famed for its luscious sweet wines.
Marsala is historically the most important wine in Sicily . Wine tours to the west of the island will give wine lovers the opportunity to sample this unique fortified wine, created by Englishman John Woodhouse in the eighteenth century for export to the British market. The dusty port of Marsala conjures up images of the Arabic world, which Sicily was once part of.
Wine tours in Sicily may also take in the spectacular black island landscapes of Pantelleria, located just 52 miles from Tunisia, where visitors can sip the unctuous Passito di Pantelleria made from the Zibibbo grape, the local name for Moscato di Alessandria. This name may come from Zabib, which means raisins in Arabic, reflecting the fact that the grapes are dried in the sun to produce this wine. The traditional head-training of the vines practised on the scorched island are listed as UNESCO world heritage.
An unmissable stop on any wine tour in Sicily is the still-grumbling volcanic Aeolian Island archipelago which can be reached by hydrofoil from Milazzo. Here you can sample the fragrant sweet Malvasia delle Lipari with its scents of freshly picked apricots, produced mainly on the island of Lipari and nearby Salina.

Why Visit Sicily?
The Italian island of Sicily boasts a history of vine-growing that can be traced back thousands of years and a seriously delicious local cuisine, making it the perfect holiday destination for wine and food lovers ! Aside from fantastic wine and food tasting opportunities, Sicily has a fascinating history and diverse culture influenced by colonisers from the Greeks to the Arabs, and stunning natural beauty with idyllic beaches and smoking volcanoes. All compressed into a small triangle of land in the Mediterranean Sea.
WINE TASTING TOURS IN SICILY In the past, Sicilian wine production focused on quantity and the island’s best-known export was the fortified wine of Marsala. However, since the 1980’s innovative local winemakers have been working to improve the quality and profile of Sicilian wines, with a focus on the island’s indigenous grape varieties. Sicily now boasts one of Italy’s most exciting wine industries, making it a fascinating destination for a wine tasting holiday. A number of ambitious winemakers are braving the rumblings of Mt Etna – the highest active volcano in Europe. Etna’s rich volcanic soil, microclimate and high altitude combine to create a unique terroir that produces some of the best, most critically acclaimed wines on Sicily. Experience Etna’s best wines for yourself on a privately guided or small group wine tasting tour .
FOOD TASTING EXPERIENCES IN SICILY Italy is not lacking in foodie destinations however Sicilian cuisine is like no other. The island’s fertile soils produce a plethora of full-of-flavour fruit and vegetables and the surrounding seas are home to an abundance of seafood. Sicilian cuisine takes these incredible ingredients and gives them an exotic twist with Greek, Arab and Spanish influences. Don’t leave without trying Arancini, Sfincione, Sicilian Cassata and the mouth-watering pistachio ice-cream. The best way to sample the variety of local cuisine in Sicily is on a guided food tasting tour or try your hand at cooking Sicilian dishes with a cooking class.
WINERIST INSIDER TIP The Ancient Romans brought their wine production techniques to Sicily and these traditions still exist on the island. Don’t leave without sampling wine that has been aged, not in oak barrels, but in earthenware pots. The Winerist team can tell you which wineries offer this traditional experience.

Into the Vineyard was a top-notch travel planning experience. We took a 5 day wine tasting tour of Tuscany. Our itinerary was custom-designed to our specific desires. Communication was clear throughout the process, and was surprisingly affordable. Our guide was absolutely fantastic! We made unforgettable memories and are looking forward to planning our next trip with Into the Vineyard!
My wife and I just returned from the most wonderful custom wine tour of Tuscany, Italy courtesy of Into The Vineyard. Their wine experts developed the wine tour of Tuscany custom itinerary according to our wishes and did the entire trip very affordably. We met so many wonderful people along the way who shared their passion for wine making in Italy. The history and the culture that we learned was also quite amazing. We would certainly recommend Into The Vineyard to anyone interested in this type of a custom wine trip to any of the many countries they offer.
What a Trip! The Into The Vineyard team orchestrated a perfect holiday for our family. Paolo, Alessandra and the operations team were clear communicators, developed a very detailed agenda & addressed all of the little details that made all the difference.
[They] introduced us to many wineries that we were not familiar with - a variety of small family producers & iconic names. And they were able to secure reservations with the wineries we selected as well. Our drivers/guides (Alessandro & Andrea) were gems - always on time, service-oriented & safe driving of course - but they also shared local knowledge, traditions & added so much color to our experiences.
Our second wine trip with ITV. This trip to northern Italy was even more amazing than our previous trip to France. The team at ITV was able to arrange low-stress visits to popular locations, like St Mark's Square and the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. They also arranged for us to experience some less busy sites, such as the Giusti Garden in Verona, and the Villa Pisani near Padua. The hotels they booked were all excellent, but the Villa Cordevigo, a former monastery, was stunning. Every driver, every guide, and every accommodation treated us like royalty. They were all happy to share their love of the region with visitors. Thank you Paolo and team for this wonderful experience.
First time using this travel service, and it was amazing! I should clarify by saying it is an “experience” service. After landing in Italy, every attention to detail, to travel, to hotels and itineraries and fantastic guides and wineries were planned for us… fantastic!! Plus they gave us a fantastic app prior to the trip to reference [all the] hotels, wineries, travel plans, train tickets, phone numbers of transportation services, and guides we would be meeting… so well planned!! I cannot imagine planning a trip like this on my own, nor being able to create the same experience, and once we booked there were absolutely no worries about logistics, and only wine, food, sightseeing, and joy! [I] absolutely plan to travel and experience a place with Into the Vineyard again!!

The city of Palermo has a wondrous allure set against the pristine lulling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. What's Included:
Becoming Acquainted with the Unfamiliar
The sunlight sweeps across the lush vineyards stretching across the landscape outside your resort. The relaxed pace of Marsala resounds across the shoreline and low-lying hills near the city. After breakfast, your guide greets you the lobby, eager to introduce you to the culture and history surrounding Marsala. Your day begins with an introduction to the flavors of Marsala, where you can enjoy the simple pleasures of a wine tasting at a celebrated local winery. The family who owns the vineyard has been in the wine industry for more than 160 years.
The cellars in Marsala provide a spacious courtyard filled with citrus and olive trees, bringing a delightful zest to the day. The particular cellar which houses the barrels was carved out of the natural tuff rock, providing a temperature controlled area maintained by the earth’s climate. Exploring the historical grounds and processes involved with creating the wine pairs perfectly with the floral profile and perfumed style of the white wine. In the afternoon, you ascend the mountainous terrain to the town of Erice, at 2,463 feet above sea level. Medieval buildings line the streets.
Verdant trees encircle the rugged granite cliffs. Pepoli Castle and Venus Castle offer breathtaking panoramas of the rolling hills and expansive sea. The Norman edifice of Venus Castle has impressive towers climbing over the already powerful mountaintop. On a clear day, you can look out over the shoreline and see Africa’s coast in the distance. The 15th-century Gothic church of Chiesa Madre was erected in the shape of a Latin cross. Baroque altars and lavish paintings add to the enriching ambiance. The Duomo was built in the 14th century. The view from the mullioned windows makes the entire moment feel taken out of a storybook.
Heart of the Market
In the morning, Palermo bustles with open-air markets overtaking the historic cobblestone streets and piazzas. The monuments of the city predate the Roman Empire. The lavish Norman Palace has Phoenician foundations. The Arab influence on the Cathedral’s design is prominent in the form of geometric embellishments. You arrive in the city and meet your guide. You are eager to explore the depths of the culture that has amalgamated various values and traditions from traveling societies from around the globe. One of the best places to experience the vibrant lifestyle of Palermo is at Cap market, the oldest market in the city.
Stalls edge the old city wall and the backside of Teatro Massimo. Vendors call out to passersby and one another, filling the streets with a boisterous and jubilant atmosphere. Packaged spices provide a savory aroma and refreshing brightness. The marketplace maintains a connection to the Arab traditions of past inhabitants. Vendors hold out large lemons to you, urging you try the alluring scent. Mountains of olives rise over stalls. The colors of the produce are vibrant and fresh. Your guide points to the freshly made arancini , deep-fried rice balls that offer a savory crunch throughout the day. After your exploration of the market, you continue to the restored 18th-century palace overlooking the sea.
Visiting the Valleys
You wake up to the rejuvenating sounds of the sea lapping on the beach. The aroma of fresh espresso refreshes your senses. The luxuries of your resort have cradled you throughout the night, and the wonders around Marsala have kept you intrigued during the day. The majesty of Sicily continues with your private transfer to a wonderful vineyard in the province of Sambuca di Sicilia. The landscape rises to an altitude of 1,148 feet. Arab settlers founded the area in the 9th century, but archeological evidence suggests people have populated the area since prehistoric times.
Low houses and courtyards decorate the Saracen quarter of the town. Oak and maple trees create forests inside the lava landscape. Vineyards stretch across the hills, casting a verdant glow. It is here where you find the local winery encompassing 229 acres, yielding numerous grape varieties. The estate was constructed in the mid-1990s, with a wine cellar erected near a charming 16th-century farmhouse. The calm waters of the lake reflect the surrounding greenery. In the tasting room, you find a white wine with exuberant youthfulness. Mineral essences from the volcanic soil enrich the earthy notes and citrus tones. The fascinating flavor balances the delicate with the strong.
Indulging in Tradition
The medieval center of Agrigento buzzes with energy. Boutique shops and cafes line Via Atenea. Narrow alleyways meander away from the main street and into the historic landscape of the city. In the morning, you visit an exclusive winery near the city before continuing to a famous culinary school known for educating chefs in the traditional flavors of Sicily and the importance of connecting with your food. The landscape around the culinary school is lush, filled with vineyards rolling along the hills and sporadic trees decorating mountains on the horizon. The country ambiance is comforting. The chef welcomes you into her way of life, happy to use the seasonings to inspire the timeless combinations of flavors that have lasted for centuries.
Pistachio, lemon, and mulberry orchards provide shade in a garden blossoming with tomatoes, artichokes, and eggplants. You follow the Chef through her garden, noting the types of vegetables she chooses and her reasons for doing so. The country house has a Sicilian charm that you have noticed during your time on the island, encompassing 1,200 acres. You prefer to attempt a challenging dish, mixing flour and eggs to create a fresh pasta dough. Knead the dough, ensuring its quality, and round it into the perfect ravioli that you stuff with ricotta and mint. When you finish the dish, the aromas of mint and almond are enticing. A stunning dish drizzled with sage-almond pesto sits before you, turning curious and enchanted heads and noses.
The Beauty of Baroque
In the morning, you leave behind the central medieval character of Agrigento for the Spanish Baroque qualities of the towns of Ragusa and Modica. In the afternoon, you arrive in Modica, a town known for its architecture, food-loving locals, and exceptional chocolate. Buildings rise along the steep hillside overlooking the valley. The main street of Corso Umberto I meanders along the banks of one of the three main rivers in the valley. One of the treasures of Modica is the thrill of discovery. The historic buildings are peppered around town, necessitating your exploration of the streets and piazzas.
On the upper reaches of the town, known as Modica Alta, is Chiesa di San Giorgio. The church is secluded atop a 250-step staircase. Medieval alleyways wind beneath a three-tiered façade. Sunlight pours through the windows to shine some natural light on the silver, gold, and blue colors of the interior, producing a kaleidoscope of Baroque art. Your guide continues to lead you through the streets following the aroma of chocolate, chili pepper, and hints of cinnamon or vanilla. You find Dolceria Bonajuto and settle into the quaint café that produces some of the most luxurious chocolates in the region.
Wine and Dine and Differentiation
The Old Town of Ragusa is a quiet neighborhood filled with narrow streets that twist and turn among the Baroque architecture. A mixture of 18th-century buildings is scattered amongst the pre-17th-century structures that survived the earthquake of the late 1600s. After breakfast, your private transfer greets you at the hotel and escorts you to the southeastern corner of Sicily. Carob and almond groves rise over the expansive vineyards on the property. The landscape fills with red and yellow hues emanating from the rocks and flora. The boutique vineyard uses well-preserved techniques to produce various types of wines.
Your guide tours you along the property. You enter a room filled with terracotta jars. Your guide explains that the simple method accentuates the humble ingredients, but allows the mixture to ferment, grow, and establish itself as a classic wine. The boutique vineyard produces wines that mirror the landscape, ranging from floral and vibrant to rugged and earthy. Your guide pours you a sample of the Pithos Rosso, a red wine produced with the age-old methods you had seen earlier. A cherry nose entices you to sip your tasting. The wine has an elegant spice with earth notes and a complex tannic structure.
Tremendous Taormina
In the morning, you venture away from the hilly borders of Ragusa to the towering cliffs of Taormina. The waterside city overlooks the Ionian Sea, reaching an elevation of 669 feet. Cacti sprout from the cliffs. The water is clear and crisp below, splashing against the rocky base of the landscape. In the distance, you can spot the looming peak of Mount Etna. White puffs of smoke rise out of the volcano’s summit. Your guide leads you on an encompassing tour of the city, taking in the quaint lifestyle of locals lingering in the piazzas and enjoying the narrow shady lanes.
Greek settlers founded the town in the 6th century BC. The Greek Theater was erected in the 3rd century BC and offers a dramatic view of the sea, sky, and Mount Etna’s stunning peak. It is the second largest Greek theater in Sicily, behind Syracuse. The edifice was built from brick and carved into the sloping mountainside. The horseshoe configuration arches around the stage with a diameter of more than 357 feet. During the summer, the community still shows movies and offers opera performances inside the theater.
Remembering the Flavor
When morning washes over Taormina, the romantic buildings and lavish terraces come into view. Via Pirandello winds up the mountainside, passing Byzantine monuments. Gondolas ascend and descend the funicular to Mazzarò. Locals sit at open-air cafes and bask in the early morning sea breeze. The ambiance is refreshing and relaxed. After breakfast, your private transfer greets you at the hotel. Soon you will venture to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport for your flight home. For the moment, you prefer to do as the locals do and indulge in the sights and sounds of a perfect Sicilian morning.

Ragusa is one of the most picturesque towns in Sicily. The view from the upper town over Ragusa Ibla on its own separate hilltop is quite breathtaking. The town was originally built on a small steep-sided hill with deep valleys on three sides separating it from the high plateau. After the earthquake of 1693, which destroyed many of south-eastern Sicily’s buildings, it was decided to rebuild Ragusa on higher, more level ground nearby. This new planned town was built, with straight streets and a rational layout, but local aristocrats didn’t want to move, and instead built themselves new palazzi on the ruins of the old town. So nowadays Ragusa has two parts: Ibla (or Ragusa Ibla), the older nucleus on its hilltop, and Ragusa Superiore, the more modern upper town which spreads from the post-earthquake streets into more recent developments. Overnight in Ragusa

Today visit Modica and Noto Nested in a dramatic gorge of the Val di Noto , Modica, is a World Heritage Site. Its flamboyant baroque architecture delights its visitors as soon as they approach the town from the road. Yet Modica is a sharply divided town, and locals usually identify with the lower or the upper part of the town. The lower town mainly occupies two wide streets that came to replace two rivers after a tragic flood in 1902. The upper town, built on a steep hill, is a maze of alleyways, and retains the feel of an old Sicilian village. Both have many splendid baroque palaces and religious edifices. Lower and upper Modica have their own opulent Chiesa Madre, which are the main points of focus of the itinerary. The church dedicated to San Giorgio, the patron saint of Modica (upper Modica) is of interest, notably for its remarkable grand façade and its elegant twin staircases leading to the church. In the church of San Pietro (lower Modica), its old rival, the largest chapel is decorated with a superb Madonna of Trapani by the school of Gagini. Next to San Pietro is the cave-church of San Nicolo Inferiore , the oldest church in Modica. Its earliest fresco, depicting a scene of the Ascension, date from late Byzantine (late 10th early 11th century). You will be introduced to the town’s legendary chocolate making traditions with a visit to Modica’s most esteemed chocolatier for a special behind the scenes look at their artisanal chocolate making practices. On the way to Noto, you will enjoy a private winery tour followed by a tasting of the producer’s elegant Nero D’Avola vintages, before enjoying a lovely picnic lunch beneath the estate’s sprawling carob trees. Noto is famous for its masterpieces of Sicilian baroque style. It has many fine churches that are outstanding because their architecture, decorations, but also because of their strategic locations. Stroll through the archaeological park of Neapolis , admiring one of the largest of all surviving Greek Theatres , a Roman amphitheatre built to allow for gladiators ‘sporting’ activities, which the Greek theatre could not accommodate, and the Ear of Dionysius , a huge cavern shaped in a way that gives it surprising acoustic properties. Lunch in a characteristic local restaurant. A great many legends are associated with this cave. In Ortigya , you will stop at many important sites such as the ruins of the Apollo Temple , the famed Arethusa fountain and the Piazza del Duomo, certainly one of the most suggestive Italian Baroque piazza. Arrive at your Grand Hotel Belmond Timeo 5* early afternoon and spend rest of the day at leisure. Day 09: Mount Etna and Taormina Private Guided Tour | Breakfast at the Hotel. Meet your driver and Guide at the hotel lobby. This morning visit Mt Etna Volcano, one of the world’s most active volcanoes in Europe. You will reach 2.000 meters (7.000 ft) where you can admire and take a walk on the “Silvestri” craters (1892) and the latest new lava flows and craters from 2001/2002/2003 – Eruptions of Etna follow a variety of patterns. Most occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of 2008) six distinct craters: the Northeast Crater , the Voragine , the Bocca Nuova , and the Southeast Crater . Other eruptions occur on the flanks, which have more than 300 vents ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of metres across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and spectacular, but rarely threaten the inhabited areas around the volcano. You will then visit a local family farm where it is possible to taste local Etna wine , a selection of different types of honey (orange, lemon, eucalyptus, strawberry…), almond pastries, olives, and extra virgin olive oil . Driving down from Mount Etna through wonderful scenery with photo stops at the most beautiful locations; you will visit the Piazza Belvedere (Lookout square) where you will have a breathtaking view of Isolabella (Beautiful Island) and the Messina coast line. We will then take you to the historical centre of Taormina. The gods must have been smiling on Taormina, because this Sicilian town has been blessed with heavenly beauty. Taormina , the ancient Taurominum , is a spot of infinite loveliness, the land of Dolce far niente – of sweet do nothing. The town lies in an elevated position of amazing, almost unique beauty, affording magnificent views combining sea and sky of a marvelous blue, miles of a curving coastline and picturesque mountain scenery, while the majestic pyramid of Mt. Etna on one side constitutes a scene of indescribable beauty. Upon arrival we will visit the most impressive monument of the city: the Greco-Roman Theatre . It has the finest site of any theatre in the world and one of the most striking monuments of antiquity. We continue our walking tour to the Villa Comunale : the public gardens which are planted with a huge variety of flowering plants and shrubs ranging from the most common to the exotic. Overnight in Taormina.
Day 10: Taormina at Leisure or *Optional Tour: Taormina/Giardini Naxox Coast Private Boat Tour | Breakfast at the Hotel. Meet your driver at the hotel lobby. Today you will enjoy a Private Boat Tour of the Taormina/ Giardini Naxos area. This boat excursion will enable you to enjoy Sicilian east coast dominated by the bulk of Europe’s largest volcano, Etna. To begin this adventure will sail with our boat in the direction of the Timpa di Acireale , named for the characteristic shape of the lava flows superimposed over millions of years and eroded by the sea. Finally, we’ll reach the famous Riviera of the Cyclops : Capo Mulini, Aci Trezza and Aci Castello , which are part of the beautiful natural reserve of Isole. You can attend one of the most impressive shows that nature can offer, I Faraglioni . The legend tells us that the Cyclops Polyphemus throw these stones from slopes of Mount Etna against Ulysses and his fellow trying to escape from him. Then we come back to Giardini Naxos . The Bay of Naxos closes with the Capo Taormina , rock structure that is erected by the sea on which stands the enchanting Taormina. We’ll stop here to have lunch buffet on board. During the entire excursion, you can have open bar of soft drinks. The most advanced end of the Capo Taormina is characterized by a huge rock on which is placed a cross, hence the name given by locals, Scoglio della Croce . Under the head creates a wonderful “natural pool” where we will stop to give you the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear sea and maybe go see the Grotta del Giorno about 25m deep, the cave is populated by the characteristic flora and fauna as sea urchins, starfish, shrimp, eels and coral. Later it will open to your view the lovely Bay Isola Bella characterized by green vegetation and the presence of a residence built in 1954 by a noble family from Messina. In the beautiful bay of Isola Bella there is the Grotta Azzurra with its characteristic depth of 30m is outstanding for its rich flora and fauna and the intense blue color that the sun’s rays through the water of the sea give the cave. Finally, we enter in the Bay of Mazzarò and sail towards the Bay of Sirens natural creek which offers a unique atmosphere. Late afternoon you will continue to your Hotel in Taormina.
