Korean events confirmed on Asian Tour schedule

Golf in uae, golf in uae world.

The GS Caltex Maekyung Open Golf Championship & Kolon Korea Open returning to Asian Tour

Sport - Golf - Bi-o Kim

Two of Asia’s longest-running and most popular championships will return to the Asian Tour schedule in 2023.

The 42nd edition of the GS Caltex Maekyung Open Golf Championship will be staged at Namseoul Country Club from May 4-7.

The Asian Tour’s finest players will then return to Korea from June 22-25 for the Kolon The 65th Korea Open Golf Championship at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club.

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & Chief Executive Officer at the Asian Tour, said: “We’re delighted to be able to confirm that these two fabulous championships will form part of what’s shaping up to be a record-breaking season for the Asian Tour.

“Our thanks go to the sponsors, the Korea Golf Association for their continued support, and Namseoul and Woo Jeong Hills, which are familiar venues to top-level tournament golf.”

Sport - Golf - Minkyu Kim

In particular, Bio Kim and Minkyu Kim will be looking forward to returning to the scenes of memorable triumphs in 2022.

Roared on by a large final-day gallery, Bio Kim carded a closing one-over-par 72 to claim his overdue maiden Asian Tour title with a nine-under total. He had also won the Maekyung Open at Namseoul in 2012, although it was not then part of the Asian Tour.

Of the Namseoul venue, Kim said: “It’s a place where I grew up and where I practice a lot. That’s a reason why I’ve had success here. I like the golf course … and my house is about 20 minutes away. That helps!”

Minkyu Kim, meanwhile, secured his first Asian Tour title and first victory as a professional on Korean soil at his country’s national Open at Woo Jeong Hills in 2022 following a tense three-hole play-off with compatriot Mingyu Cho.

In so doing he added his name to the illustrious list of Korea Open winners, which includes Major champions Y.E. Yang, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia and John Daly.

What is the International Series on the Asian Tour? Is it linked to LIV Golf?

The International Series marks a ground-breaking and unprecedented investment into the Asian Tour by LIV Golf Investments.

asian tour golf korea

The International Series was unveiled by the Asian Tour and LIV Golf back in February, marking a huge investment and development for the circuit.

The International Series is integrated into the Asian Tour schedule and it began with its Thailand event at Black Mountain Golf Club in March.

Related: Patrick Reed actually just said THIS ahead of competing on the Asian Tour

LIV Golf, commissioned by Greg Norman, increased their investment of $200 million to $300 million into the Asian Tour, supposedly showing LIV's commitment to improving golf on a global scale.

10 events are set to be played on the International Series each season for the next 10 years. Some of the key aims of the series include driving fan engagement, attracting commercial interest and stabilising professional golf.

The series will visit countries such as England, Korea, Vietnam, China, Singapore and Hong Kong while prize purses will range from $1.5 million to $2 million.

What is the International Series on the Asian Tour? Is it linked to LIV Golf?

The first event of The International Series in Thailand was won by Sihwan Kim. Scott Vincent won the second event at Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort at the start of June.

There are two more events on the series scheduled for 2022. International Series Singapore is taking place this week at Tanah Merah Country Club where Patrick Reed will be teeing it up having most recently played in the Bedminster Invitational on the LIV Golf Tour .

"I have heard a lot of amazing things about the area and the golf course. To be able to come and experience it myself is amazing and watching the (National Day) fireworks last night was great," Reed said.

"There is a lot of things that go into it, and when the people treat you like family as they have here, it makes the experience that much better."

International Series South Korea is up next from August 18 to 21 at Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club. This will be the fourth event of the series to be held in 2022.

Currently, Vincent leads the International Series Order of Merit from Kim in second place. Travis Smyth, Phachara Khongwatmai and Sadom Kaewkanjana make up the top five and all of these players have competed on the LIV Golf Tour this year.

The Asian Tour kicked off its season with the Saudi International in February which was sponsored by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia . The PIF is the majority shareholder of LIV Golf Investments.

$2 million Korea Championship to debut in April as part of DP World Tour, PGA TOUR support of Korean golf; KPGA Genesis Point Winner Youngsoo Kim to earn DPWT membership

Change Text Size

The DP World Tour and PGA TOUR jointly announced today an expansion to the relationship with the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA) that will see the KPGA’s Genesis Point Award Winner earn membership onto the DP World Tour for the ensuing season, beginning with the current 2023 campaign, and the launch of a brand new $2 million tournament in Korea.

A raft of benefits will also see the top finishers on the Genesis Point list earning entry into various stages of the DP World Tour Qualifying School, which takes place later in 2023. The three Tours intend to further discuss expansion of additional pathway commitments for 2024 and beyond.

Youngsoo Kim has secured this exemption for the 2023 DP World Tour season after finishing the 2022 campaign as the Genesis Point Award Winner, having claimed his first career KPGA victory in October at the Genesis Championship before winning again at the season-ending LG Signature Players Championship. As announced previously, as a result of winning the Genesis Championship in October, he will also gain entry into July’s Genesis Scottish Open, the Rolex Series event which is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

As part of its commitment to supporting professional golf in Korea, the DP World Tour will also mark its return to the country for the first time in 10 years next April for the inaugural Korea Championship. The tournament, which will be co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and KPGA, will be played at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon with a $2 million prize fund on offer. Additional information regarding the Korea Championship will follow in due course.

Today’s announcement further enhances the playing opportunities for international players to compete at the highest levels of men’s professional golf. As part of this system, the leading 10 players on DP World Tour’s Race To Dubai Rankings [in addition to those already exempt] will earn cards on the PGA TOUR, beginning with the 2024 season – an aspect of the partnership between the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour announced in June.

In addition to the exemptions confirmed today, the KPGA will also work alongside the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR on other key business areas, including strategic development and commercial growth, as

well as future collaboration on media rights strategy and enhancements to the player pathway, including access to the Korn Ferry Tour.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive Officer of the DP World Tour, said, “The KPGA has a strong history of producing exceptional talent and we are delighted to confirm these formal pathways, giving players clearly defined routes to showcase their skills on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

“Combined with our tournament in Korea next April, we look forward to working closely with the KPGA and the PGA TOUR to inspire, and to enable, future generations of Korean players to reach the very top of the men’s professional game.”

Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA TOUR, said: “Sungjae Im, K.H. Lee, Si Woo Kim and Joo-hyung ‘Tom’ Kim are all becoming household names in the United States thanks in large part to the contributions they made this past September for the International Team at the 2022 Presidents Cup. What each of those young stars has in common is that they all honed their craft at the KPGA, which continues a proud tradition of producing world-class talent each and every year. We look forward to seeing the next set of young stars from this proud golf country make their way onto the DP World Tour and perhaps subsequently onto the PGA TOUR in future seasons.”

Ja-Cheol (J.C.) Koo, Chairman of the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association, said, “It has been our honour to see Korean Tour winners go on to have similar success at the top echelon of the men’s professional game. We are certain that today’s announcement will help further grow the sport in Korea, and we are grateful to be officially welcomed into the meritocracy that the men’s professional game provides.”

Korean stars who have previously been victorious on both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR include K.J. Choi, Y.E. Yang and Seung-Yul Noh. Choi jointly holds the record for most PGA TOUR victories by an Asian golfer with eight, including the 2011 PLAYERS Championship.

Choi said: “I’m delighted the KPGA, DP World Tour and PGA TOUR have expanded their relationship which will only benefit Korean golfers. Our young players will have added motivation to excel in the game as there is now a clear career pathway for them to compete on the KPGA, and subsequently play against the best players in the world on the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR. This announcement is a wonderful development for Korean golf.”

Hyo Joo Kim

Hyo Joo Kim lived up to her billing at the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Korea as the home favourite put on a show to win by three shots in Seoul.

Leading by two shots heading into the final round, the Major winner held off Charley Hull‘s Sunday surge carding a round of 68 (-4) to end the week on 10-under par.

Kim said: “I haven’t won on the Ladies European Tour (LET) before so this is very meaningful and makes this win all the more special for me.

“My performance this season has been disappointing. Ending the tournament in Korea on a positive note feels like a turning point for me. I feel confident and energized to perform well in upcoming tournaments like the U.S. Open and the Olympics.”

Playing alongside Hull and recent winner Mariajo Uribe from Colombia, Kim with given extra breathing room on the opening par-4 1st when both her opponents dropped shots.

A Sunday shootout soon looked on the cards as Hull lit things up on the front nine making five birdies in seven holes before the turn. Kim responded with birdies of her own on the 5th and 7th – the latter one of the shots of the day on the picturesque par-3 – to lead by one shot.

The birdies would dry up for Hull on the back-nine, however, as Kim shut the door making birdies on the 14th, 16th, and 17th to the delight of her fan club, the shooting stars, watching on.

Despite missing the green on the 18th, the World No. 12 was still able to three putt to seal a classy three shot victory.

“Charley [Hull] hit a lot of birdies so the competitiveness in me boiled up to bring out the best in me. If you have players that make a lot of birdies that always helps me.

“I’m going to have a celebratory party today. I did have a lot of misses [on the course], so my party will last two days! Then I’ll probably focus back on practicing.”

With the clinical victory, Kim picks up her second victory on the LET after she won the co-sanctioned Evian Championship – her only Major win to date – in 2014.

In second place on seven-under par finished Hull who matched Kim’s score to record yet another runner-up finish on the LET.

“I’m pretty happy with the way I played,” the World No 8 said. “I played solid all day but Hyo-Joo just kind of ran away with it at the end. I just couldn’t hole the putts coming in. But I’m happy with my week. It’s when you come second again but it’s ok.”

Uribe and South Africa’s Casandra Alexander ended the week in third place on five-under par – the latter posting the round of the day to continue her excellent run in the Aramco Team Series.

Switzerland’s Elena Moosmann ended the week in solo fifth on four-under par. Denmark’s Nicole Broch Estrup was one back in sixth position.

Earlier in the day, Team Kang were crowned Team winners after the quartet of USA’s Danielle Kang, England’s Lily May Humphreys, China’s Tian Xiaolin and amateur Kyu Ho Lee combined to post a score of 23-under par.

In the Order of Merit, Hull overtakes recent winner Chiara Tamburlini to take third position. Her compariot Bronte Law still leads the way on 1,171.15 points with Belgium’s Manon De Roey in second on 1,037.17 points.

Next up for the stars of the LET is a trip to Berlin for the Amundi German Masters. Follow all the action on socials @LETgolf on  Instagram  and  X  and Ladies European Tour on  Facebook  and  YouTube  – #RaiseOurGame #SeeTheImpact.
