It is also known as ‘off-season’ as the rain leads to landslides in the lower region and avalanches in the higher reason making it very less preferable season. Though you can still trek in the season if you would have prepared accordingly. Having muddy and slippery routes with unclear sky you will find lesser crowd.

Autumn: September to November is the best season to plan a trek. The temperature starts from 15 °C to 17 °C with rain or snowfall. As the sky will be clear, sunrise and sunsets could be seen perfectly. Though you will find the trail very crowded but the trek is worth doing.

Which are the best winter treks in India?

Winter treks on the Himalayas means snow treks to most of us. Yet snow is not the only reason that you should consider a winter trek. Usually weather on the Himalayas remain clear and cloud free in winters, unless it is snowing.

Before getting into which are the best winter trek in India, let us know few facts at first. Hopefully this will help you to get a basic understanding of snow conditions in winter treks. Also this be useful just not to follow any X, Y, Z list of best winter treks, blindly!

December to February is the time you look for a winter snow trek. Amount of snow depends primarily on the particular time that you choose. Also it varies to an extent from one trail to other, at any given time.

As the winter progresses, snowing intensifies. Later in winter, more is the snow. At times, probably too much to trek!

So,  snow depends from one trail to other?

Yes, it is due to the varying latitude within Himalayas. Higher latitude i.e. northerly areas would normally attract more snow. As a result, you can expect increasing amount of snow moving from Sikkim/Darjeeling to Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. This is the reason that you normally don’t find  winter treks in Himachal (very limited short day hikes within ~ 3000 m/10000 ft) or treks in Kashmir.

Check here for our latest offbeat and new winter trekking routes for 2021-21 winters, if you are typically looking far away from crowd.

Comparison of top 5 winter treks in India:

What are the most visually appealing winter trails in India? In my opinion, this is a perspective driven answer and you may not agree with me. Despite some similarities in the winter treks, each trail is indeed an unique experience. In fact all the trails mentioned below are the top qualifier for the best winter treks in India.

Let us compare the following winter treks with respect to certain attributes and elements that you can decide on your suitable winter trek. Remember that this list is not based on any order of preference. To keep it simple and short we will compare these beautiful and popular trails during winters:

Brahmatal trek :

Departure dates: Every weekend from mid December to mid March. 6 days and 5 nights, Kathgodam to Haridwar.

brahmatal-best-winter-treks-in-india-1

Rarely you will find a gifted trail with so many surprises, yet accessible in winter. Dense forests in the beginning, suddenly stepping into alpine meadows, stretched with the vista of Garhwal and Kumaon peaks. Two hidden lakes and towering duo – Trishul and Nandaghunti peak as you gain altitude. Although Khamila top above Brahmatal lake is challenging to climb in deep snow but unfurls another stretch of peaks. You can see Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Hathi, Ghoda and several central Garhwal peaks around Badrinath area from the top.

snow-starts-deposited-during-late-december-on-brahmatal-trek

Being in eastern Garhwal and centrally located within Uttarakhand, this trail usually gets late snowfall than its western counterparts. Therefore you can expect snowing and deposited snow from late December. Also the amount of snow is general less than western Garhwal and making it a rather conducive trekking trail in January and February. However there are instances of heavy snowfall by mid December, though not normal.

Sandakphu trek :

Departure dates: Ever weekend in December and some more in January and February. 6 days and 5 nights, NJP to NJP or Bagdogra.

fresh-snow-at-sandakphu

Sandakphu is probably the finest ridge trek in India, bordering Darjeeling in West Bengal, India and Nepal. Eastern Himalayas are known for its prolonged monsoon, and winter is a reliable season for great views of the high mountains. This trek is also unique for to its well recognised Tea House mode, thanks to neighbouring Nepal. Singalila ridge is famous for its absorbing views of surrounding high mountains of Sikkim and Nepal. Kanchenjunga massif, along with other peaks forming Sleeping Buddha is the central highlights of this trail.

fantastic-peaks-views-in-winter-on-sandakphu-trail

This entry in our list is not primarily due to snow. Rather because of fantastic views of Kanchenjunga and occasional fresh snow. As mentioned before, due to its eastern Himalayan location and hence the lower latitude results into less snow than Uttarakhand treks. The chance of snow is more in January or February.

Kedarkantha trek :

Departure dates: Every weekend from beginning of December to end of January. 6 days and 5 nights, Dehradun to Dehradun.

kedarkantha-most-popular-winter-trek-in-india

This relatively soft trail is a short hike to the peak called Kedarkantha only 10 odd Km from Sankri. A perfect winter trek for people who want more from an adventure vacation trip. The trail offers good amount of snow hiking, filled with fun. Sometime trudging and at time glissading on snow. The peak offers a magnificent sunrise with panorama of peaks, some standing pretty close like Swargarohini and Black peak.

kedarkantha-trail-walk-snow-fun-in-winter

In the first place, this trail is in far western Garhwal, bordering Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, Kedarkantha peak is the highest point in the vicinity. Therefore it is safe to assume that this trail will receive earlier snowfall than other trails within Uttarakhand. Generally snowfall starts from the beginning of December and continues till February or even in March. Usually snow conditions are harsh during late winter, i.e. late January to February.

Dayara Bugyal trek :

dayara-bugyal-best-winter-treks-in-india

Dayara Bugyal, an alpine meadow surrounded by dense alpine forest and above Bhagirathi River valley. This trail going up to 12000 ft is near Uttarkashi , western Garhwal region,Uttarakhand. dayara-bugyal-snowing-starts-from-mid-december

This trail normally gets some snow from mid of December. Entire January and February you should get moderate to heavy snow. Snow may remain as late as April, depending on a particular year.

Side by side comparison of popular winter treks in India:

Below we will carefully look in to various attributes of these treks and compare side by side.

I am hopeful that  you have clearer idea about all popular winter trails in India by now. Now it is up to you to choose one which trek is probably the best for as your next trek. We will definitely help you out with finer details, in case you are still not sure. 😎 .

Additional Notes:

  • I din’t consider Chadar trek as essentially its a winter only trek (best from mid January to mid February). Moreover we are keen to protect the over commercialised trail and hence don’t operate on this trail, starting from 2016.
  • From 2016-17 winters, no permit is issued for Har Ki Dun trek during mid December to February. Hence this is out of scope at present for winter treks.
  • Snow conditions are changing more frequently in recent years. In 2016, first snowfall occurred only in late December, be it Uttarakhand or even Himachal.
  • There are additional trails, which are stunning, yet offbeat  and possible to hike during winters. Notable ones are Dodital trek , Ali & Bedni Bugyal trek , Phoktey Dara trek , Chopta Chandrashila trek , Bajre Dara Trek , Barsey trek . We will  discuss and compare these trails separately.

Why February is the Best Time for Trekking?

trekking in february

Winter treks in the Himalayas are synonymous with adventure, and some of the best places to trek in February are popular for the thrills they offer. While adventure sports like skiing are a must on most treks, what makes the Himalayan trails special is the added difficulty of climbing through amidst the snow cover. Walk through snow-capped forests, look up at the mighty Himalayas beyond the snowy meadows, and enjoy a perfect winter wonderland on your February trek.

The 15 Best Treks of the Himalayas

The 15 Best Treks of the Himalayas

Wondering what the 15 greatest treks in the Himalayas are? Home to the world’s highest mountains most trekkers head straight for Everest Base Camp and while it’s a great option the opportunities for adventure abound among the peaks of the Himalayas of which over 100 exceed 7000m or 24000 feet.  Here is a quick rundown of 15 great treks from Bhutan to India starting with Nepal.

The Greatest Treks of Nepal

Nepal lies almost in the middle of the Himalaya and while it’s a small country it hosts 8 of 14 of all the world’s mountains over 8000m.

Everest Base Camp

#1: Everest Base Camp

This has to be our all time favorite trek in the Himalayas. Great views of Everest, a good trail, wonderful tea houses to stay in and almost continuous views of some of the tallest peaks in the world will keep your attention during what is typically an 11 day trek. The trail ends at Everest Base Camp where you can look directly up the ice fall of the Khumbu Glacier towards the peak of Everest which is still an impressive 3500m above you. On the way you will see 3 of the worlds 10 tallest peaks which asides from Everest also include Cho Oyu (8201m/26,906ft) and Lhotse (8,516m/27,940ft). Just as spectacular although not as tall are the ice laden walls of Pumori (7,161m/23,494ft) and Ama Dablam (6,812m/22,349ft). Trekking is possible from September to June and although it’s cold in December and January its probably one time of year you can find solitude.

Poon Hill and the Annapurna Base Camp

#2: Poon Hill and the Annapurna Base Camp

This is really two treks that can either be done separately or together. Like the Everest Base Camp trek this one offers a great trail and fabulous tea house lodging for those looking for a little comfort. If you have just four or five days the trek to Poon Hill is one of the best short treks in the Himalayas and offers fantastic up close views of Annapurna. If you have a little more time make the journey to Annapurna Base Camp lying in the famed Annapurna Sanctuary where you can see a fantastic view of the south face of Annapurna I (8,091 m/26,538 ft) the 10th tallest peak in the world. The route approaching the base camp provides great views of the hanging glaciers and sheer cliff face of Machapuchare (6,993m/22,943ft) known locally as “Fish Tail or the Matterhorn of Asia.” Fish Tail is sacred to the locals and off limits to climbers.

Manaslu Circuit

#3: Manaslu Circuit

The Manaslu Trek is a 14 to 16 day tea-house trek which encircles the world’s 8th highest peak. In recent years the tea houses and trail have been improved and the trek is quickly becoming a popular alternative to the Annapurna Circuit. The total number of visitors in the past few years has been around 2000 with most coming in October. This is one of Nepal’s great treks and it gets you away from the crowds at the same time. The trek remains in a restricted area meaning that a $50 per/week fee is charged to trekkers.

Booking Information : Manaslu Circuit Trek 18 Days

Makalu Base Camp Trek

#4: Makalu Base Camp Trek

It’s a 16 day trek to the base camp of Makalu (8463m) the worlds 5th tallest peak. Unlike the treks mentioned so far this is not a tea house trek and it requires organizing for camping. The trek starts from 435m and so transverses through a range of environments as it heads up the Barun Valley to the Makalu base camp. It’s a true wilderness experience with some of the last remnants of untouched forests and beautiful alpine meadows.

Booking Information: Makalu Base Camp 23 Days

Upper Mustang Trek

#5: Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek highlights the desert beauty and ancient Tibetan cultures of Nepal. The 18 day trek heads north from Jomsom on the far side of the Annapurna Range. A special permit is needed to enter the area and the trek needs to be arranged as a combination tea house and camping trek. Very few tourists (maybe 1000 a year) make the journey to see this remote part of Nepal. Some of the highlights of the trek include the ancient “Forbidden City” and the ancient monasteries and caves. The dry mountainous landscape might seem more similar to Ladakh in India then the other treks in Nepal.

The Himalayas span across northern India from the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh in the east to Kashmir in the west. Sikkim in eastern India is famous for several trekking that skirt the base of Kanchenjunga the world’s third tallest mountain. Kangchenjunga from Pelling, Sikkim

The Goecha La trek is an 8 day trek in the eastern India state of Sikkim. This is one of the wettest portions of the Himalayas due to the proximity with the Bay of Bengal and direct line of influence from the Indian Monsoon. The first view points are from Dzongri Top where you can see both Kangchenjunga and Mount Pandim. Dzongri is itself a stopping point for many but its worth trekking onwards to the Samiti Lake a sacred lake whose crystal waters are the source of the Prek River. Technically the mountains lying to the west of the Indus River are not considered part of the Greater Himalayas so the Karakoram should be viewed as a distinct mountain range. Security is always a concern trekking or climbing in Pakistan and we don’t recommend it but the beautiful trek up to the K2 Base Camp is certainly on our to do list if the situation improves.

K2 Base Camp Trek

#15: K2 Base Camp Trek

K2 (8611m) is the second tallest mountain in the world and this 20 day trek to the base camp is a once in life experience. The journey starts with great views of Karakoram Ranges with Nanga Parbat but the real highlight may be Concordia which is often called the “the Throne Room of the Gods.” Concordia is at the junction of the Godwin Austen and Baltoro glaciers and is ringed by 4 of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Those looking to summit Gasherbrum II, Gasherbrum IV, Chogolisa, Mitre Peak, Masherbrum, Broad Peak and the Trango Towers all pass this same route. This is not an easy journey to organize but it could not be left out as it must be one of the most impressive journeys in the Himalayas (One with the founders of Himalayanwonders).

Have some suggestions of great treks that we have left off this let us know as we will be updating and revising it.

Best Winter Treks in Nepal

  • Best Trekking in Nepal During the Winter Season

Many of us assume that trekking excursions in Nepal are only available in the spring and autumn. Hence, we wistfully fantasize about the spring adventures of next year as autumn folds up not giving a thought to the winter season. It is true that the winter months in Nepal are regarded as an off-season for travel, particularly for mountain activities that include trekking. However, Nepal offers a wide range of possibilities all year long; you just have to pick up the right destination and prepare accordingly.

While some are longing for the possibility of winter treks in Nepal, some might not think of winter trekking as their typical vacation though they are available. It is acceptable given the harsh, dark, freezing, and uncomfortable weather of the winter. But, the mountains are beautiful and lovely in the winter and likely provide the greatest vistas and scenery of the year. In fact, Nepal’s Himalayan Region become a winter wonderland for those who experienced trekking in winter.

With the autumn crowds gone, you can explore with a bit more space and have the Himalayas only to yourself. You can experience the journey more keenly than during other seasons. The glaring bright sun, the crisp air, partially to fully frozen cascading waterfalls, the freshly coated mountains, and the wild, off-beat, and trail-worthy paths in winter will satisfy your urge to adventure. Also, why wait till next year when you will get discounts on the airfares, accommodations, meals, and overall package along with the lovely trails, scenery, and Himalayas to yourself?

Here we have shortlisted our best winter treks in Nepal offering you real adventures as well as plenty of stunning Himalayan & hilly landscapes, traditional sites, vibrant cultures, and culinary delights to explore.

1, Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

An easy and scenic , Ghor epani Poonhill Trek pops up as the first thought for the winter trek in Nepal. It is not only a winter trekking route but is all season favorite. This trekking route is ideal for beginners, family vacations, and nature and culture enthusiasts. It is also called Poonhill Trek and is famous for the golden sunrise and stunning views of the Annapurna range. The vantage point, Poonhill at 3120 meters is the highest elevation in this journey offering a breathtakingly breathtaking view of the entire Annapurna Range along with nearby peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli. Along with offering a breathtaking view of the Himalayas, this journey is renowned for its thriving cultures and traditions.

There are many possibilities to learn about rural life in Nepal because the walk necessitates traveling through a lot of ethnic Gurung and Magar settlements. This route travels through the oak and rhododendron woodlands for most of the time with the Himalayas as the backdrop.

The Ghorepani Poonhill route gets super crowded every spring and fall which might not be your cup of tea. So, you can go for this trek in the winter when the trail is less busy and the Himalayas are captivating. Similar to that, this trail is coated with white snow during the winter, which brightens the region adding more excitement to the journey. Also, you do not have to wait long for the Himalayan vistas as this trek is reasonably accessible.

2, Everest View Trek in Winter

Making up to Everest Base Camp in the cold winter is possible but not easy. There are chances of the trail getting blocked as you approach closer to base camp. Hence, Everest View Trek is a great alternative to seeing Everest in winter. This trek is also called Everest Panorama Trek. It is implied by the name that you will see panoramic views of Mount Everest (8848m) and other stunning, tallest mountains in Nepal's Khumbu Himalaya.

Perfect for all age groups and all types of trekkers, Everest View Trek lets you discover the stunning Khumbu region, a variety of different scenery, the Sherpa houses, and the Sherpa people, their culture, and their way of life. You can see the Himalayan ranges of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, and many other summits in the Khumbu region during the winter from some breathtaking vantage points.

3, Langtang Valley Trek

The Langtang Valley trek is among the shortest and simplest treks in Nepal. Though this route does not see as many trekkers in Everest and Annapurna regions, it is equally beautiful both naturally and culturally. This trekking tail is one of the closest to the capital, Kathmandu where you can experience the wonderful Himalayan culture and scenery.

The Langtang Valley Trek is one of the more secure high-altitude hiking routes among the various winter treks in Nepal because there is a low chance of avalanches or altitude sicknesses. The valley is known as the valley of glaciers as there are more than 70 glaciers. You might get to discover some of them on your trekking journey. Similarly, the trek route lies inside the Langtang National Park which borders Tibet and you might get to encounter some endangered species such as the Red Panda.

Kyangjin Ri is the highest point in this Langtang Valley Trek at 4300 meters. And this vantage point provides a comprehensive 360-degree panorama of the Langtang range such as Langtang Lirung (7246m), Kimshung (6781m), and Langshisha RI (6370m). Along with the Himalayan splendor, the Tamang people and their cultures and traditions are also fascinating. Therefore, it is safe and enjoyable to explore this snow-covered beauty in the winter.

4, Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal Trek is a recently discovered off-the-beaten-path trek in Nepal. The journey takes you to the lap of the Mardi Himal that lies beneath the Machhapuchhre (fishtail) Mountain. To the east of the Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal Trail is a hidden gem in the Annapurna region that offers great pictures of the giants like Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

While being an off-the-beaten-path trek, Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively moderate-level trekking journey that can be completed at any time of the year even by beginners. The trek is beautiful throughout the year but in winter, it looks extra stunning due to fresh snow at the pinnacles and in the oak and rhododendron woodlands. Also, seeing swiftly moving rivers, iron or even bamboo-clad bridges, and a simple way of life will make your heart leap with excitement. With less to no crowd, the region covered in the color of white snow will be only yours. Thus, it is one of the best treks to do in winter in Nepal.

5, Pikey Peak Trek

Pikey Peak is the choice of the first Everest climber, Sir Edmund Hillary for the best Everest view. The Pikey Peak Traill is one of the lesser-known treks in Nepal that is recently re-discovered. Given the lower elevation, the Pikey Peak Trek is considered one of the best winter trekking in Nepal that is located in the lower Everest Region. This journey allows you to experience the Rolwaling and lower Everest Regions.

The trekkers to the Pikey Peak track can get a closer look at Sherpa culture because it is a less-traveled path. You can see some of the highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest (8,848 meters), Makalu (8,463 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), and many others. Although there is a lot of snow during the winter, the trek is definitely worth it for the panoramic views of the Nepal Himalayas. Not only the stunning mountain scenery,

But you will also get to witness the gorgeous golden sunrise and sunset vistas during the journey. Over the top, it is rare to find a journey that is that simple to experience in Everest Khumbu.

Though considered a part of the Himalayan region, the low elevation makes this trail a wonderful winter trek. And, wintertime views of the Langtang range, Gosainkunda range, Ganesh Himal, and other mountains along the trail are spectacular.

7, Khopra Danda Trek

Khopra Danda Trek is another Annapurna Region trial that makes it to the list of the best winter treks in Nepal. It is one of the most well-liked less well-known and thrilling treks that lies to the south of the Annapurna. This journey takes you to off-the-beaten-path locations where you may experience the best of Nepal’s rural life and distinguishing landscapes.

The Khopra Ridge Trial is less popular even in the seasons, so you can have the trails to yourself in the winter. You will get to enjoy the breathtaking 360-degree views of the Himalayas including the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and many other peaks. The terraced farms, traditional villages, swift rivers, lush forests, and the locals and their distinct culture are all parts of this Khopra Trek. Beautiful throughout the year, it is much more unique to experience in the winter.

8, Jomsom Muktinath Trek

Jomsom Muktinath Trek lies in the Annapurna Region but has a different landscape from the trials listed in this list. It is a trek over the dry and arid desert that provides a unique perspective on the prehistoric and meditative landscape of the lower part of the popular Mustang Region. This journey is also possible year-round, but winter offers a different perspective as the area transforms into a surreal setting. Snow will blanket the entire valley between Muktinath, Jomsom, and Kagbeni, and the mountain range that surrounds these villages is more visible than ever.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trek lets you enjoy a beautiful up-close view of Mount Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri, as well as other Himalayan peaks. It also includes a stop at the Muktinath temple, which is a holy site for both Buddhists and Hindus. The Kali Gandaki gorge, the biggest gorge in the world is one of the noteworthy locations you will travel through on this adventure.

9, Dhaulagiri Annapurna Balcony Trek

The Dhaulagiri Annapurna Balcony Trek is a fantastic walk to the well-known Annapurna region that offers trekkers a balcony-like 270-degree panoramic vista of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks. This trip combines the trails to Ghorepani Poonhill and the Mohare Danda, two of the most well-known and stunning hiking routes in Nepal.

This beautiful trekking trail is short and simple and offers the chance to obtain a trekking experience in the Annapurna region without regard to age. Throughout the course of this trip, you will be treated to a stunning panorama with amazing views of the Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Annapurna (8091m) ranges. Other peaks like Lamjung Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Gangapurna, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, etc. will also keep you occupied.

Your soul will be energized as you pass through waterfalls, villages, farms, and rhododendron forests. Being an easy and low-elevation trek with fantastic views of the Himalayan crowns covered in fresh snow, this is one of the top winter treks in Nepal.

10, Chisapani Nagarkot Trek

For the shorter option, we have Chisapani Nagarkot Trek on the list. It is the nearest trekking trail from Kathmandu which can be customized as a 2-day or a 3-day trip as per the trekker’s convenience. The ultimate destinations during this walk are the two famous hill stations, Chisapani and Nagarkot. Both vantage points are famous for the stunning Himalayan views along with the sunrise and sunset vistas.

The walk also includes a trip across the Shivapuri National Park and Shivapuri top which also offer the great mountain as well as the Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding landscapes. The trek is considered to be best done in spring and autumn but the winter months are also a great period. You do not have to travel far to admire nature.

In the end, The list above concludes that Nepal is a wonderful place to visit where trekking is possible in winter too. So, get ready to see the pristine Himalayas including the world’s tallest, frozen waterfalls, scalding hot springs, and ice caverns this winter holiday. You will get to see some of the natural wonders that come to life when the temperature dips.

5 Reasons True-blue Himalayan Wanderers Shouldn’t Miss the Mountains in Winter

If you are a true-blue thrill seeker and lover of the Himalayas, starting at the end of the year and continuing up to next March might be a highly opportune period to go in the mountains. Try timing your winter treks from December onward. This is when the first snowflakes are born in the womb of the sky, migratory birds fly to warmer places, and water faces start forming thin sheets of ice.

A true blue Himalayan lover should really try making the most of this period, trekking to the furthest wintry corners for reasons a handful

Cerulean Clear Skies

Never will you find the sky as vibrantly blue as it is during winters in the Himalayas. True, not the entire span of winter passes brightly, yet on a standard 7-day trek you will have a high chance of getting at least 5 enjoyable clear sky days. On a typical sun-soaked winter day, clouds are scarce except for delicate filaments of cirrus picturesquely streaking the blue in a silky white sheen.

It becomes especially favorable to trek on winter days since the sun’s rays dim in harshness. As you keep up with the miles, only a sweet warmth spreads through the senses and it doesn’t at any point get too hot and humid.

To experience the mellow blue of winter skies, choose treks featuring open meadows and camping sites like Chitrakantha on the  Winter Kuari Pass trail. From here, a panorama of Garhwal Himalaya’s celebrated peaks comes to view and at sunrise and sunset, the sky floods with celestial hues. From the Chitrakantha camp point on the Kuari trail, you can get the best sighting of the Alpenglow phenomenon when the majestic Dronagiri peak seems to catch fire at sunset and glows golden like a hearth in heaven.

Uttarakhand’s splendid bugyals, or alpine pastures too light up in the soft winter sun offering a spectacular view with a clear blue sky in the background that contrasts brilliantly with the grassland. The Chopta-Chandrashila-Deoriatal trek route passing through Rohini Bugyal can be your pick for December if you are yearning for such a sight. Mark, at the height of winter, you will find the bugyal in a hazy shade and patchworked with snow.

Gradients of Mattes

If you have a photographic eye, the novelty of matte winter shades in the Himalayas cannot go unappreciated. On treks from December, flowers in the Himalayas will be scarce to find. Around this time, the green pastures will be turning brown and the color draining from the forests will reveal a gala of matted hues. Even the evergreen conifers will be covered with snow.

The mountain canvas post-December at the lower reaches of winter trek destinations, before full cover of snow starts, is matte and melancholy with a certain beauty of its own that can be best captured in the Gorson Bugyal stretch towards Kuari or the undulating slopes of ashen green and pale brown visible from the Nag Tibba campsite.

Your rendezvous with the Himalayas will remain incomplete if you see her slopes only in the summery feats of color and nothing of the wintry blues.

Falling Snow

The romance of falling snow never gets clichéd. As an overcast sky finally gives and feathery snowflakes come floating down dreamily, the universe seems to tune to slow motion. The dreamscape of a campsite caught in the romance of falling snow becomes true on treks like Brahmatal at winter’s peak.

The romance gives way to sheer thrill when the snow starts to fall during the hours of trek. The experience of becoming one with the silence of the snowfall and finding the world blurring into whiteness is chillingly surreal!

Home Image

With a number of beginner-fit winter treks on offer, like Chopta and Brahmatal, you can easily think of making the little ones in your family a party in the winter adventure. The memory of a snowball fight on the slopes can be the best gift of childhood.

Trick Walking During Thaw

The going can get challenging in snow when the mercury hits a rise. Especially during the mid-noon hours when the sun glares right overhead, you can feel the snow cover slipping under your feet. On winter trek peak climbs like Kedarkantha , you will find yourself going plop into the depths of snow with each step coming down heavy.

The thrill of snow walk, for example, on the frozen surface of Chadar  can come with a surge of adrenalin rush. Especially so, when your trek leader asks you to gear up with microspiked crampons to your shoes and gaiters to keep your limbs free of snow. Suddenly, you are not an ordinary person anymore but a swashbuckling mountaineer!

In the precarious snowscape of winter treks, you will actually get a taste of technical climbing. Trick walking with light footed steps along the snow covered narrow strip towards the summit can bring a challenge you just cannot afford to lose!

Winter treks are where adventure gets real!

Cold as Cold Can Be

You wouldn’t know what subzero means if you haven’t gone on a winter snow trek . Get this, the temperature on the Chadar trek drops to -25 to -30 degrees in January. If you cry, your tears will freeze midway coming down the chin!

To sum up, the overall point of taking a winter hike in the Himalayas is to learn the art of survival in the face of extremities that will strengthen you to the core and no challenge of life can deter you anymore!

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Top 7 rum mule recipes.

Top 7 Rum Mule Recipes

May 01, 2020

In this post, we discuss the Rum Mule, a delicious twist on the classic Moscow Mule. We also share the top 7 Rum Mule recipes to try today. Let's get started!

Introduction

In 1941, in a bar in New York, the famous Moscow Mule was invented. Since then, there have been hundreds of variations of the drink made across the world. One of these is the Rum Mule. This variation is based on the original mule cocktail but substitutes vodka for rum as its base alcohol.

The Rum Mule is said to have first been made in Bermuda, just after the end of the First World War. Its main ingredients are dark rum, ginger beer, and lime juice. With this amazing cocktail people who prefer rum to vodka now have a perfect alternative if they’re looking for an interesting twist to the classic Mule.

How the Rum Mule is Made

To make a Rum Mule, you will need a shaker, highball glass, muddler, and a bar spoon. The original drink was served in a highball glass, but you can choose to use a copper mug, in true Mule fashion.

Besides the basic ingredients - which are ginger beer, lime juice, and rum - ice and simple syrup can also be used. Other ingredients, such as fruits, can be added to introduce preferred flavors and aromas. If you wish, you can use ginger ale instead of ginger beer.

Choosing Between Ginger Beer and Ginger Ale

Ginger beer or ale is the base of any Moscow Mule variation. Both are ideal for the perfect cocktail; however, they have differences that affect the final outcome in terms of flavor. Ginger beer has a longer history than ale, having been introduced in the mid-1700s in England. Ale came around much later in the mid 19th century, originating from Ireland.

In terms of production, ginger beer is fermented, a process that leaves it with a small alcohol content. It’s made with a mix of ginger, water, lemon juice, and sugar. Ale, on the other hand, can be defined as carbonated water or soft drink flavored with ginger. Ginger beer has a stronger, spicier taste, and is, therefore, more effective at balancing alcoholic and citrus flavors in mixed drinks.

Ginger ale has a mellow ginger flavor that will introduce a sweetness to your cocktail. It contains no alcohol and is lighter in color compared to the beer. Whichever you choose to go with, you can expect to benefit from effects such as suppression of nausea and improved gut health.

To learn more about the difference between ginger beer and ginger ale, see our complete blog post on the subject. In addition, to learn how to make your own ginger beer, check our our complete guide here .

7 Rum Mule Recipes to Try Today

Dark ‘n stormy cocktail.

clear glass filled with gradient brown colors stainless steel straw ice and sliced citrus

This is the simplest Rum Mule recipe, as it only requires three basic ingredients. For the best results, use high-quality ginger beer and dark rum.

Prep Time: 5 minutes Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 4 ounces ginger beer
  • 2 ounces dark rum

Instructions:

  • In a glass, combine ginger beer and rum.
  • Add ice and stir.

Spiced Rum Mule

clear mug filled with liquid ice mint leaves and lime slices beside Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum bottle

This cocktail uses spiced rum, which is essentially rum that contains caramel colorings and spices. Therefore, if you prefer a spicy flavor for your Mule, this is one variation you should definitely try.

  • 1.5 ounces spiced rum
  • 4 ounces ginger ale
  • In a highball glass, muddle lime and mint.
  • Add the ginger ale, rum, and ice into the glass.
  • Stir then garnish with mint sprig and lime wheel.

The Cuban Mule

decorative copper mug filled with liquid ice and citrus slice beside a clear glass vase with flowers

If you love the sweet Cuban mojito, then you may want to try its Rum Mule variation. To do that, you need to switch your white rum for the dark type. Also, you should do away with the soda water and use ginger beer instead.

Ingredients

  • 1½ ounces dark rum
  • 1 teaspoon cane sugar
  • ½ lime wedge
  • 12 spearmint leaves
  • Muddle the spearmint leaves, cane sugar, and lime wedge in a tall glass.
  • Add ginger beer and rum.
  • Stir the mixture.
  • Serve over ice and garnish with mint leaves.

Rum Mule with Simple Syrup

copper mug side view with slice lime and mint leaves

This recipe makes use of simple syrup, which is an alternative to granulated sugar. The simple syrup dissolves more easily and provides a thicker texture. To make your simple syrup at home, mix equal parts of sugar and water then heat them. Cool the syrup once the sugar dissolves, store it in a glass container, and then refrigerate. You can use it for the next two to three weeks.

How to Choose Rum for Your Mule Cocktail

While ginger beer or ale is the common ingredient in every Moscow Mule variation, rum is the main ingredient here. Rum is an alcoholic beverage made from fermenting sugarcane molasses or juice. It’s clear that you have to choose a good quality rum for a great Rum Mule cocktail. To help you do that, you should  know about the different types of rum available.

The following are the main types of rum:

  • White Rum – Also known as light rum, this type is light-bodied and has a sweet flavor. It’s normally aged for at least a year. After aging, it’s filtered to remove color. Because of its mild flavor, it’s rarely taken alone and instead mostly used in cocktails.
  • Dark Rum – Dark rum is aged for a longer period compared to white rum, which gives it a spicier and stronger flavor. This type of rum is made from caramelized molasses and aged in charred barrels. The resulting color tone ranges from red to black, to brown.
  • Spiced Rum – While barrel-aged rum naturally obtains a spicy flavor, spiced rums have spices such as pepper, cinnamon, cloves, rosemary, and cardamom added to enhance the taste. Caramel is also added in some cases to intensify the flavor further.
  • Flavored Rum - Flavored rum is mostly used to blend tropical drinks, but it can also be enjoyed neat. This is rum that has been infused with the flavors of fruits such as pineapple, orange, banana, or lime.
  • Overproof Rum – While most rums have an alcohol content of 40 percent or less, overproof rum has a much higher percentage. Some have an ABV (Alcohol by Volume) of up to 80 percent.
  • Gold Rum – Gold rum is medium-bodied and has characteristics of both dark and light rum. It has a stronger flavor than white rum but is less intense than dark rum. Gold rum has a dark amber color, which is as a result of being aged in wooden barrels.

Choose Your Flavor

Flavor and alcohol potency are ideal benchmarks to consider when deciding what kind of Rum Mule to make. Using dark or overproof rum will give you a strong alcoholic base, while flavored and white rum will allow you to try less alcoholic and sweeter flavors.  Ingredients such as lime juice, mint, and fruits should be as fresh as possible to provide maximum taste and aroma.

For an exceptional drinking experience, drink your Rum Mules in moderation. This will not only let you enjoy every sip and savor the flavors, but also bring about psychological health benefits such as improved cognitive performance and reduced stress. Studies have even shown that moderate alcohol consumption promotes euphoria and happiness. So, don’t forget to mix your favorite version of the Rum Mule the next time you’re hosting friends for a great time!
