Busted are officially reuniting and going back on tour next year.

Charlie Simpson , who quit the chart-topping trio in 2005 after reportedly growing tired of pop songs, has rejoined Matt Willis and James Bourne to play a string of gigs across the UK from 11 to 31 May 2016. Oh and and as if that isn’t enough, they’ve been writing new songs too.

The “What I Go To School For” gang posted a video on YouTube to make their exciting announcement. The six-minute clip sees the boys share the story of the band and reflect on Simpson’s sudden departure.

“He was a real asset, he brought so much to the table,” gushes Willis. “The band looked cool when Charlie was there. I never thought it would end. I thought we’d be Green Day in 20 years. I thought we’d carry on forever.”

Simpson said: “I felt a huge amount of guilt when I left Busted the first time because I knew that they didn’t want to stop and that was hard to deal with. We were really good friends and you don’t want to upset anyone you care about. But staying in the band at that time could have risked our friendship.”

Unsurprisingly, fans are going crazy for the news on Twitter after waiting ten long years for the reunion to happen.

Willis and Bourne joined forces with McFly in 2013 to form supergroup McBusterd, fulfilling fans’ wildest fantasies of hearing both “Year 3000” and “5 Colours In Her Hair” at the same concert.

Best Band Reunions

Simpson opted not to take part as he was busy with metal group Fightstar and solo stuff, but now he’s decided that actually, Busted are pretty damn cool after all.

Tom Fletcher of McFly and McBusted first sparked rumours last month when he posted an Instagram photo of himself playing guitar and looking up, with a caption reading : “Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Charlie freakin’ Simpson! Or so rumour has it.

Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday 13 November.

Busted Tour 2016: Band Announce Reunion Shows, Complete With Charlie Simpson

Busted have confirmed that they are reuniting - complete with former member Charlie Simpson .

The 2000s pop band are set to play a reunion tour next year, and they have already started recording new music together.

News of their comeback will come as a shock to fans, as Charlie has always insisted he would never team up with Matt Willis and James Bourne again, after quitting the group in 2004.

James Bourne, Matt Willis and Charlie Simpson are reforming as Busted

But the lead singer has now had a change of heart, and explained that he first thought about rejoining the group after Matt and James teamed up with McFly to form McBusted , who recorded an album together, and toured the UK twice as a six-piece.

"A year ago James and I got together and just started hanging out … and it felt really different, somehow, to how it had ten years ago," he said.

"And the idea crept into my head after all that time apart: what would Busted look like today?"

Of the band’s return Matt added: "For me, there's a huge sense of unfinished business … I always thought in my heart we'd do Busted again, but that it was just a matter of when and how."

The boys as they appeared in their pop heyday

Buted released their debut single ‘What I Go To School For’ in 2002 and had eight top 10 singles and two albums, before James and Matt announced they wouldn’t be continuing without Charlie shortly after his exit.

Charlie later went on to join rock band Fightstar, before pursuing a solo career.

When McBusted formed in 2013, Charlie insisted he would have no part in any future reunions, saying: "I wish Matt and James all the best with their future projects but I want to make it unequivocally clear that I have no interest whatsoever in rejoining Busted and I never will."

Busted 2016 tour announced by Charlie Simpson who explains why he's putting the band back together

Charlie tells the 3AM Girls: "I’m sure cynics will say I’ve done this for the money – but I haven’t"

James Bourne, Matt Willis and Charlie Simpson of Busted

  • 09:24, 13 Nov 2015

After 10 years of insisting that Busted would never reform frontman Charlie Simpson has done a dramatic U-turn and announced a new 2016 tour.

But the deep-voiced heartthrob, 30, insists that he’s not doing it for the cash, despite seeing the huge success former bandmates Matt Willis and James Bourne had as part of their supergroup with McFly. (McBusted for those of you who’ve been living under a dark rock).

Read more: See Busted live on tour across the UK -tickets on sale today

Speaking exclusively to 3am the singer, who left the band after just two albums to concentrate on ‘serious’ rock music with his other (less commercially successful) group Fightstar, tells us: “I’m sure cynics will say I’ve done this for the money – but I haven’t.

“For a start I could have returned for McBusted and made money on that, but I didn’t.

“Of course, I hope it’s a success, it would be weird if I didn’t. But things needed to be right between us for this too work.” The trio – who laugh and joke like the old pals they are in a plush London hotel suite as they munch on nuts – snuck off for a top secret US recording studio trip to Philadelphia to see if the magic was still there.

busted 2016 tour

After penning four new songs together Charlie, who’s now married with a four-month-old son, says it was the music that sealed the deal.

“The overriding factor is that I thought the new tunes were sounding awesome,” he says. “It’s a progression. People might think it will sounds heavy, like Fightstar, but it won’t, they’re just awesome songs.” Back in 2006 Charlie described his time in Busted as “torture”, but now assures us it’s all water under the bridge.

Puffing on an e-cigarette, he says: “Time is healer. I don’t feel like we need to have a big discussion or vent.

“Matt and James both know and understand why I left the band in the first place.”

Matt confidently informs us: “We’re not a band who need therapy. I feel fixed. We never hated each other anyway, it just feels cool.”

Busted Tour 2016: Charlie Simpson FINALLY reveals why he’s back in Busted

Plus everything we know about busted's tour - and the future of mcbusted.

Busted Tour 2016 Charlie Simpson

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard that Charlie Simpson has only gone and rejoined Busted - you know that thing he said he would never ever do? Yep, Chazza and his big, bold, beautiful eyebrows are back and will be reuniting with Matt Willis and James Bourne on tour in 2016.

Ever since announcing their reunion, the question everyone's been asking is just what made Charlie eat his own words and rejoin our favourite boyband (soz 1D)? In an exclusive interview with Kerrang , the former Fightstar singer has finally given us an answer. But that doesn't mean we don't still have a few other questions...

Why has Charlie Simpson rejoined Busted?

busted 2016 tour

Given that Charlie has stated several times throughout the last decade that he has no plans to team up with his old Busted pals, it's hardly a surprise that everyone's questioning why he's had a sudden change of heart.

"Being excited about making music with those guys - that's what's led me here. It's made me think, 'this could be fun again.' I can put my hands on my heart and say that I wouldn't be rejoining Busted if I wasn't excited about the music," Charlie exclusively told Kerrang .

Addressing rumours that he's back to cash in on the success of McBusted, Charlie argued: "Wouldn't I have done McBusted [if that was the case]?"

He added: "I wouldn't have left Busted for an alternative rock band that nobody knew of [Fightstar, LOL] if I had been the sort of person that valued money over music."

How did Charlie Simpson rejoin Busted?

busted 2016 tour

Charlie explained to Kerrang that Matt and James popped round his house about three years ago wanting to do Busted again.

"In my head, I still thought I'd never do that again, and I was committed to doing my solo stuff. But - and this is important - we ended up having a really, really good time," he said.

"We kept in contact from that point on, and I did start to think things were different to where I thought we were."

Charlie added: "They came round my house again, not that long ago, with some new songs, weren't even Busted songs at the point - just songs James had written - and they were really, really good. Brilliant pop songs. I got excited about them."

And so it seems Busted was reborn!

Why did Charlie Simpson leave Busted originally?

busted 2016 tour

Charlie announced his decision to leave Busted back in January 2005 (aka the dark days) to pursue a career with alternative rock band Fightstar - and it wasn't long before rumours were flying all over the place about rifts between the Busted trio.

Looking back ten years later, Charlie revealed to Kerrang : "I don't want to sound too extreme, but I was close to getting depressed as you could ever get, and I was worried I might turn to drink or drugs or something."

He added: "It was really nothing to do with Matt and James, though. It was just I had to do Fightstar." And now he's been there, done that and worn the band t-shirt.

What's happening with McBusted?

busted 2016 tour

No official word has been given on what the revival of Busted means for super-group McBusted, but Tom Fletcher certainly doesn't think this means the end.

Speaking to Yahoo , Tom said: "It was all completely unplanned and spontaneous and it has always been that way with McBusted, we don't really know what is coming up but it's something that is always going to be there - it definitely doesn't feel like the end."

Maybe Charlie will become the 7th member of McBusted? Who knows...

Will there be a new Busted album?

busted 2016 tour

Yes! Yes there will! And given what Chazza has said about the new material the trio have penned, it sounds as though it's going to be pop-tastic.

Who will be the opening act for Busted's 2016 tour?

McFly opened for Busted when the boys first went on tour - so in heat 's dreamworld they'd join the lads on tour again. If not then maybe we'll see the like of 5SOS or The Vamps? It's anyone's game at the moment.

What will the Busted 2016 tour actually be like?

busted 2016 tour

The last McBusted tour was everything you'd want from a boyband concert, and more. We're talking blow-up boobs and flying cars, you guys. With any luck Busted will take on the same lively and childish nature - but Charlie is known for being the serious one of the group (hi Liam) so this is yet to be seen.

When is the Busted 2016 tour?

After selling 100,000 tickets within an hour and selling out London's 02 Arena, Busted added extra dates to their 2016 tour which kicks off in May and will see the boys touring across London, Birmingham and Manchester to name but a few cities.

Where can I buy Busted 2016 tour tickets?

Good question, friend. Try Livenation or Ticketmaster for all your purchasing needs.

The most exciting news of the decade, Busted are back and with Charlie Simpson in tow.

Busted mania is running wild as the guys will be going on their first tour in 12 years starting on 11 May 2016 at Wembley Arena.

Who wouldn’t want to see more of Matt Willis everywhere again?

It’s taken us a few days to calm down, we’ve pulled ourselves together and here are our top ten Busted songs we hope to hear on tour next year.

We’re just glad we didn’t have to wait until the Year 3000…

Meet You There

Most recently this track featured in their reunion video and is the band’s signature hashtag for their 2016 reunion tour.

So many emotions.

Psycho Girl

From their self-titled album, Psycho Girl looks at another of the band’s terrible experience with girls.

A song which most of us can probably relate to now…

The song which featured on their debut album was never released as a single.

The lyrics confess their love for queen of pop Britney Spears with some pretty clever references and ‘baby’ impressions.

Crashed The Wedding

Their second number one hit Crashed the Wedding was released in 2003 and was written by James Bourne and McFly’s Tom Fletcher.

Possibly the band’s best music video as it saw the guys dressed up as multiple characters including James Bourne as the creepy guest hitting on Charlie Simpson as a waitress.

Nice tights Charlie…

(Look out for McFly’s Harry Judd on the drums in the music video)

Sleeping with the Light on

Their fourth single, released in 2003, showed a more serious side to the band.

This track was the first song James and Matt wrote together and featured on their debut album Busted.

Air Hostess

By their second album, A Present for Everyone, the boys had grown up and were no longer dreaming of Miss McKenzie and were looking to join the mile high club instead…

It’s funny how many of Busted’s innuendos were missed all those years ago.

Thunderbirds Are Go! Busted sang the official theme for the 2004 Thunderbirds movie which went on to be the band’s final number one.

The song remained at the top of the charts for two weeks, longer than any of their previous singles.

Who’s David

Their third number-one single, Who’s David, was released in 2004.

The music video shows a maturer side to Busted as the song is about an experience with an unfaithful girlfriend.

Did we ever find out who’s David?

What I Go To School For

This hit was the trio’s introduction to the pop scene in 2002 and most critically acclaimed pop hit notable for its ‘risqué’ video where they confessed their love for Miss McKenzie.

The song was inspired by a crush 15-year-old Matt Willis had on his teacher at Sylvia Young Theatre School prior to Busted.

The ultimate Busted song. Even if you’re not a fan, Year 3000 has got to be top of your cheese playlist.

Year 3000 was the band’s second single in 2003 and includes Back to the Future references which has been a running theme with the band, even up to their latest tour as McBusted.

The video is one of few available online and features James Bourne’s younger brother Chris Bourne as their neighbour Peter.

So that seventh album may actually be a possibility now?

Hits such as Year 3000 and Crashed The Wedding helped the band from Southend-on-Sea sell more than five million records and win two Brit awards for British Breakthrough Artist and Best Pop Act before their split in 2004.

Now in their late 30s, Matt Willis, 39, Charlie Simpson, 37, and James Bourne, 39, and are getting back together as they mark 20 years since they had a number one with You Said No.

Busted will perform at 15 different venues all over the UK as they relive their greatest hits from the early 2000s.

Speaking to The Sun, Willis added, "Now it feels like it's meant to feel. It's like the very beginning all over again. Right now it feels like it's barely even begun."

The band had been teasing fans in recent weeks on their social media accounts, building expectations of a reunion after a cryptic post on Instagram, captioned: '23/03/23 #Busted20'.

The post features a Busted VHS cassette being put into an old VCR and TV, on which the band's logo then appears.

Heralded as the UK’s answer to Blink-182, Busted became one of the most iconic pop-rock bands of the noughties. Their debut self-titled album released in 2002 featured some of their biggest hits “Year 3000”, “You Said No” and their debut single “What I Go To School For”. Going onto win several accolades including Favourite Newcomer at the National Music Awards and a few BRIT awards saw Busted reach new heights as they released their follow-up album “A Present For Everyone” which went triple platinum in the UK. Their successes continued growing with every single released reaching the top 3 in the UK charts accumulating a number of eight- seriously impressive! With their teenage appeal and emulating a rebellious nature, it’s no wonder that they attracted thousands of adoring fans to their live performances. Opening with classics like “Air Hostess” sees the trio of Matt Willis, Charlie Simpson and James Bourne air jumping as they run across the stage, surrounded by a chorus of screams. Their energy is infectious as the crowd jump up and down, waving their arms in the air to “What I Go To School For” singing along word for word. Their tongue-in-cheek lyrics feed into their banter with the crowd, mirrored by some of the banners that audience wave emphatically. “Year 3000” sends the crowd wild, as the bright lights dart across the stage. “Crashed The Wedding” sees energy levels soar through the roof while ballads like “Sleeping With The Light On” slowing down them temple equally sees the biggest reaction, as the audience sway their arms in the air with the camera lights in the air. If you came to be entertained, Busted will definitely make sure you have a good time.

okay so when busted announced they were getting back together i was SO happy, the band that made my childhood and the very same band of who no one, including the band themselves, thought would ever get back together and not gonna lie, I'd liked fightstar and Charlie's solo stuff but they were all different and I liked them all in their own way but busted would always have a special part in my heart as my first loves. Anyway, we bought our tickets etc etc and the day finally came, we went and had a meal over at centertainment when

Amazing performance. Lots of energy and love from Charlie, Matt and James. The new tracks they played from the currently unreleased new album were out of this world! I loved every second of it, I was part of the Pigsty Which was ablsolutly isane to see all those people in the crowd and have a different perspective of a gig was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Charlie looks especially happy to be back he was extremely happy and energetic throughout. The lads gave great vocals and played well all night. Very much enjoyed it. Cant wait to see them next time!

After Busted split up I was devastated and when u heard they were having a reunion tour I just knew I had to go! After gettin to see McBusted which had James and Matt this was even better! Play all of the classic songs and I never sat down once. Support acts were great and was an amazing atmosphere. Such funny, talented and down to earth lads. Music sounds even better live. All busted fans must see them!

I've been waiting to see them live for the best part of 18 years and the day before my 21st I finally got to see them.

Best show of my life and I've been to well over 150 gigs in the past 2 years.

Professor Green didn't suit the lineup at all and didn't gain much of a crowd.

Scouting For Girls however were a perfect opening act. Massive crowd with everyone singing along. Brilliant.

Amazing concert, nice to hear the old and new song. Duration was a little short. The band played with the audience to entertain us. Stage was fine, lights were good. I missed the opportunity to shake hands and ask for autographs of the band (there were no VIP tickets)
