Dio – A Look Back at Sacred Heart, the Underrated Third Studio Effort!

dio sacred heart tour band

By Taylor T Carlson

By 1985, Ronnie James Dio’s solo career with the Dio Band was in full swing. He had proven himself with Rainbow and Black Sabbath on multiple releases, and with the arrival of his solo band, had further proven himself musically. Alongside drummer Vinny Appice (formerly with Dio in Black Sabbath), bassist Jimmy Bain (formerly with Dio in Rainbow), guitarist Vivian Campbell (later of Whitesnake and Def Leppard) and keyboardist Claude Schnell, Mr. Dio had established himself as a lasting force in the world of hard rock and heavy metal.

Dio’s first two albums, 1983’s Holy Diver and 1984’s The Last in Line, were undisputed rock and metal masterpieces. Both records contained several classic cuts, and remain the favorites of many a Dio fan. How would the band follow up those two unadulterated classics?

It is not likely that the band knew it at the time, but the band’s next release would be the final Dio album to feature guitarist Vivian Campbell (and unlike many members of the band that would “come and go” over the years, Campbell’s departure was permanent). Campbell played on the first half of the Sacred Heart Tour that followed the album’s release; he was subsequently replaced by former Giuffria and Rough Cutt guitarist Craig Goldy.

Sacred Heart was released in 1985. It was Dio's third album, and the final one with guitarist Vivian Campbell.

The tour for the album, which featured Campbell being replaced by Goldy, was one of Dio’s most epic of all tours, complete with a giant, elaborate castle and drawbridge set, a dragon as large as the stage, and other props that added an unforgettable feel to the experience, including Vinny Appice drum soloing in the dark with lightsaber-style sticks. Video of this tour is available and it is worth seeing for anyone who calls themselves a Dio fan.

But the album itself is the subject of this review, so let us return to that. When Sacred Heart came out in 1985, it marked a departure from the style of the first two Dio albums, with keyboards being featured more prominently, and a sound that could be described as more commercial and melodic compared to the earlier records. Despite this, it did spawn some hit singles and some of the most popular Dio solo cuts. The first two Dio albums get talked about all the time. So why no love for Sacred Heart? 30 years after its release, how does Dio’s third album hold up?

I would not put Sacred Heart on the same pedestal that I would Holy Diver and The Last in Line, but that is only because those two albums are amazing and more or less represent the pinnacle of all that is great in the world of hard rock and heavy metal, and are the highlight of Ronnie James Dio’s career. Sacred Heart is a more commercial effort than either of them and certainly more melodic in places, but this record is still heavy enough to satisfy any rocker or headbanger out there.

The guitar work is one of the true highlights here; Vivian Campbell’s solos here are some of the best of his career, rivaling even his work from the first two records. It is almost as if he knew that this would be his last record with Dio, so he gave it his all and made his work stand out throughout the album’s duration, on everything from the melodic cuts to the more straightforward rockers. While he would go on to greater fame with Def Leppard upon becoming a member in 1992, his work with Dio is the highlight of his career. Perhaps nowhere is that truer than on Sacred Heart ’s harder rocking cuts.

So, what hits did Sacred Heart spawn? While the album did not spawn anything on the level of the popularity of “Rainbow in the Dark, “Holy Diver,” “We Rock,” or “The Last in Line,” it did give audiences its share of hit Dio cuts. Opener “King of Rock and Roll” is fantastic straightforward rock, complete with fake audience for a laughable dramatic effect. The title cut is one of this fan’s personal favorite songs on the album; it is the perfect mix of heavier guitar-driven and more melodic, keyboard-driven sounds. “Rock and Roll Children” was arguably the biggest hit on the record, largely as a result of its hit MTV video. Claude Schnell really gets a chance to show off his keyboard prowess throughout the duration of this track, but it remains a rocker at heart. Upbeat and more poppy than much of the album, yet still a hard rocker, “Hungry for Heaven” is another classic; it could be argued that this was the album’s attempt at a hit single that would recapture the feel of “Rainbow in the Dark.” Similarly, “Like the Beat of a Heart” feels like something of a rehash of “Straight Through the Heart” from Holy Diver, albeit slightly more keyboard intensive, but these things do not mean it is not a good song in its own right. With at least half of the album comprised of hits, minor and major alike, die-hard Dio fans know that this album is not a dud by any means.

The lesser known songs are arguably more impressive than the hits, for the most part. “Another Lie” is straight up rock of the best kind, with hard rock riffs and catchy hooks alike. We get more hard rock on the equally memorable “Just Another Day.” “Fallen Angels” is arguably Vivian Campbell’s most impressive guitar playing on the record, and because of that, it is likely this fan’s favorite cut on the record. “Shoot Shoot” (NOT a cover of the UFO song) closes out the album; it is one of the more poppy and cheesy songs the release has to offer, and while the record could have been closed out in finer form, it is certainly not a bad song.

Tracklist for the Deluxe Edition. Disc one is the original album, disc two is comprised of bonus tracks.

Like the two albums that came before, this one got the Deluxe Edition treatment. Disc one is the complete original Sacred Heart album, while the second disc contains a wide variety of bonus cuts. The bonus cuts include live tracks that were used as single B-Sides, the rare song “Hide in the Rainbow” which appeared on the Iron Eagle soundtrack, and the complete Intermission EP, featuring a live performance from the band and a lone studio track as well. Many of these tracks are quite rare and have not had a widespread CD release of any kind, making this edition an essential purchase for any Dio fan.

Sacred Heart deserves more credit than it gets. Is it as good as the two albums that came before? No, but that is only because almost nothing is. It is a little more commercial, melodic, and keyboard driven than the records that came before. So what? Those things do not make this a weak Dio record. It was Vivian Campbell’s swansong with Ronnie and company, and he gives one of the best guitar performances of his career. This is a great, underrated record, and one that deserves a second look. Highly recommended, and the Deluxe Edition is an essential purchase for Dio die-hards, complete with rare cuts galore.

When Dio Started to Show Cracks With ‘Sacred Heart’

When Ronnie James Dio unveiled his group’s third album, Sacred Heart , in Aug. 15, 1985, it was almost exactly 10 years to the day since the singer’s first taste of stardom as the frontman of Ritchie Blackmore ’s Rainbow . And nearly five years had passed since his second as the de facto catalyst behind Black Sabbath ’s unlikely return to greatness.

Then came Dio ’s solo escape on the back of a pair of critically acclaimed LPs in 1983’s Holy Diver and ’84’s The Last in Line . They confirmed the singer’s standing among heavy metal’s ‘80s elite, complete with gold albums, magazine reader poll wins, and numerous other accolades for the 43-year old Dio, who, needless to say, was a on a roll.

He would reach top speed, in many respects, on Sacred Heart , which took the successful formula of recent years -- best exemplified by the rip-roaring speedster, “King of Rock and Roll” and the majestic title track -- and then boosted it with radio-friendly hooks and melodies as yet unheard on earlier efforts, making true hit singles of tunes like “Rock 'n' Roll Children” and “Hungry for Heaven.”

And while remaining album cuts like “Another Lie,” “Just Another Day” and “Shoot, Shoot” clearly lacked the oomph to become future concert staples, they were nonetheless buoyed by Dio’s returning, winning team consisting of guitarist Vivian Campbell , bassist Jimmy Bain, drummer Vinny Appice and keyboardist Claude Schnell.

They would set out almost immediately on a marathon worldwide tour lasting 13 months and playing over 100 shows, supported by openers like Rough Cutt, Yngwie Malmsteen , Keel, Accept . They amazed fans with an arena-sized extravaganza that is still legendary for Dio’s nightly jousts with a special effects dragon, lovingly nicknamed Denzel.

Amid all this, Dio, Campbell and Bain would spearhead the historic Hear ’n Aid charity project. This drew celebrities from every corner of the heavy metal firmament to participate in an album and single around their song "Stars," and adding yet another feather to Ronnie’s bonnet.

And yet, almost like a reflection of Dio’s fantasy/adventure lyrics, real danger lay just beneath the surface of Sacred Heart ’s facade — beginning with Vivian Campbell’s surprise firing halfway through the tour, when he was replaced by Craig Goldy. Over the years, Ronnie frequently blamed the dismissal on a lack of commitment on Vivian’s part, while the guitarist countered by voicing discontent with the band’s business arrangements (many of them overseen by Dio’s wife and manager Wendy). Bain would later say that Dio made a huge mistake by firing Campbell.

But whatever the real reason, Dio’s magic chemistry certainly appeared to be disrupted after Campbell’s departure -- but not before the original band had delivered two of the ‘80s best heavy metal albums and shared their Sacred Heart with many fans on their third release.

Dio – sacred heart (1985) – review.

Listen on Apple Music

Loved by many, hated by some. Dio ‘s 1985 epic Sacred Heart really split the fan base in more ways than one. Remember, Dio released the excellent The Last in Line just barely one year prior to this one. And went on to hit the stage in 1987 with the smasher Dream Evil 1 that still resides high up on RMR’s playlist to this day.

Ronnie James Dio took off like a rocket with his new outfit in 1983 after his secretive departure from the confines of Iommi’s Black Sabbath, some pretty turbulent times of Heaven and Hell alright. The band followed this up with two top-notch records with something pretty near to warp speed.

Sacred Heart indeed served as a portent of things to come later. First off, it was the last record with Vivian Campbell on guitars. As the lore goes, he left right in the midst of the promotional tour and much later famously joined Def Leppard.

Then, the rapid-fire releases of one new record each year – in ’83, ’84, and ’85 – started to take a strain on the band’s abilities to deliver at that high-octane level of rock and metal. And – lo and behold – first cracks appeared in that shiny armor Dio somehow built around themselves. A spottiness that would accelerate after the 1990 piece Lock Up The Wolves would hit the CD shops. 2

Don’t believe me? Well, just look at the charts. Clearly, Sacred Heart basked in the warm light the former two records bestowed on it. It hit the US Billboard 200 at position #29 and went gold straight in 1985. But then the fame kind of went out the window with no further prizes ever appearing again for this album. In other words, after the first impressive sales rush 3 , word probably reached the rest of the fan crowd that things started to move South in Dioland and sales tanked. The aforementioned cracks, like.

Consequently, no other Dio album enjoyed another gold rush until the compilation The Very Beast of Dio hit the stores in 2000. But, it only got there in 2009, so pretty much a decade later. And truly so, Dream Evil reached rank 43 only on the US 200 charts, and up that ranking went as the years progressed. This, until positions plateaued somewhere in between #110 to #145.

Now, let’s put things into perspective for a moment. Actually, consistently being on the US Billboard 200 is already a testament to stellar performance for any record, including Sacred Heart . Many a band would gladly sacrifice to the unholy gods of the underworld to get to a position on that list. Any position.

Make no mistake, Holy Diver and The Last in Line are pure Hard Rock and Heavy Metal geekery that has not been equaled since. They gorged with signature tracks that resonate to this day. A fact that indeed helped to let the inevitable duds appear less sour. 4 The bar to do better thus was already very high for any follow-on record.

By contrast, Sacred Heart only boasts the title track as THE highlight with King of Rock And Roll as a close second. Well, let’s throw in Like the Beat of a Heart for good measure, perhaps. This one indeed contains a meaty beat with that absolutely stunning solo Campbell kinda carelessly threw into the fray. Oh, and let’s not forget this underground monologue just toward the end.

Yet, many of the tracks in the second half really don’t quite cut it. Even if the band tried to polish the quality some by slamming more solos onto already doomed pieces. A technique that is pretty fashionable to this day. Yet, soloing something to stardom or just actioning the magic of progression never quite worked out.

Oh, and if you think that slamming a live recording onto a #1 position of a brand new record is courageous or something, I have news for you. Rumor has it that the aforementioned King of Rock and Roll was no live recording. The crowd noise was added to the mix later, yet it is exceedingly well done. Speedy to please yer metal soul, this track almost escapes into thrashy realms. Oh, and don’t forget to look for that galloping sound. That’s one feature that really took on steam back then. 5

Dio ‘s records always contained some filler material, but Sacred Heart more so than the rest. In hindsight, Dio – quite apparently – didn’t have all that much stellar metallics in store for yet another record. With that same retro vision 20/20 in mind, he probably should have waited for a little while longer before hitting the industry with yet another album. And truly so, Dream Evil ‘only’ reached our turntables some two years later.

In the end, Sacred Heart is a mixed bag. It contains – in part – much of the drive and bluster of the former two records. Yet, a lot of the rest fails to deliver at consistent levels of quality. That doesn’t mean that Dio threw a bad record on the market. But it shows that haste and an urge (or outside pressure) to release at all cost risks to drive ye straight into a wall.

And that’s what almost happened here. Almost.

DIO DISCIPLES To Return To The Road In 2024

In a new interview with Metal Mayhem ROC , Ronnie James Dio s widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio spoke about the status of the officially sanctioned Dio tribute band DIO DISCIPLES . She said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "We're working on coming out for next year. We're working on some stuff. We're not doing the hologram again. We're finding lots of footage of Ronnie in the RAINBOW and ELF and SABBATH and DIO era, and there will be video screens with Ronnie in there and the band playing. And we're working on some special effects. And that'll go out next year."

As for which singers might be involved with DIO DISCIPLES when the band returns to the road, Wendy said: " Ripper [ Tim Owens ] has been working with K.K. [ Downing in KK'S PRIEST ] right now, so he's gone. But Oni Logan [formerly of LYNCH MOB ] will be there, and hopefully Ripper or somebody. We'll get it happening and we'll have a good show. And that's another thing that's keeping Ronnie 's memory alive.

"Those guys love Ronnie so much," Wendy added. "And we wanna keep that music out there. But there's a lot of young new bands playing Ronnie 's music. I'm very happy about that. There's a lot of tribute bands out there. I'm real pleased about that. 'Cause they all do it for the love of Ronnie . And I'm so happy — I'm so happy that the young kids get a chance to listen to the music. I think this is the first time ever that the kids listen to their parents' music."

When DIO DISCIPLES performed at the "Rock For Ronnie" event this past May at Los Encinos Historic Park in Encino, California, former DIO members Scott Warren (keyboards) and Simon Wright (drums) were joined for the performance by singers Terry Ilous (XYZ, GREAT WHITE) and Dyna Shirasaki (THUNDHERSTRUCK),guitarist Ira Black (BULLETBOYS, VIO-LENCE),and bassist Bjorn Englen (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN).

DIO DISCIPLES is made up of former members of DIO , along with a rotating lineup of vocalists, including Owens and Logan .

Billed as a "celebration of the music and legacy of the greatest singer in the world, Ronnie James Dio ," DIO DISCIPLES have been playing Ronnie 's music on tour in a bid to keep their old bandmate's memory alive.

Three years ago, Wright told The Metal Voice that the proposed DIO DISCIPLES debut album had been put "on hold" so that he and his bandmates could focus on the "Dio Returns" tour. At the time, Simon said that "about four or five demos" had been laid down of "different songs" that he and former DIO guitarist Craig Goldy had been working on. As for the material's musical direction, Wright said: "It's difficult to pin it down, because some of [the tracks] are a little different. Still a little bit of [the] DIO [sound], the way Ronnie would write, obviously, 'cause that's rubbed off on Craig , and I hear things too. But at the moment, it's a little bit eclectic. So that was gonna be one thing we were gonna approach. We need to consolidate it and make it into a DIO DISCIPLES sound. So that was a conversation we were having: 'We need to figure out where we're going with this.' At the moment, it's a bit all over the place. But they sound good. They're great ideas."

Several years ago, Goldy revealed DIO DISCIPLES were planning to start work on a project of original material, and they debuted three of the new songs during their May 2016 appearance at the "Ride For Ronnie" motorcycle rally and concert in Encino.

Craig previously told "Talking Metal" that he has been collaborating with fellow former DIO member Jeff Pilson on the material for the debut DIO DISCIPLES album.

Goldy joined DIO during the "Sacred Heart" tour in 1986 after original guitarist Vivian Campbell was fired from the band following a contentious business disagreement with the singer and Ronnie 's management.

Pilson is best known for playing bass with DOKKEN and FOREIGNER , but he also toured with DIO in the 1990s and performed on three of the group's albums — "Strange Highways" (1993), "Angry Machines" (1996) and the group's tenth and final studio release, "Master Of The Moon" (2004).

Owens told Canada's The Metal Voice about DIO DISCIPLES ' forthcoming LP: "We're not making a DIO record. We couldn't do that. The best thing is, we've all done different types of records, but there's always some similarity to the classic metal and classic rock format, because we have this in us. But we still always move forward a little bit. But that's what it's gonna be. JUDAS PRIEST , DIO , AC/DC — all these influences are in us, and they're not gonna leave us. It's just us writing songs. It's not us writing songs to sound like something; it's us going in and writing songs."

In 2018, Wendy said that DIO DISCIPLES ' debut album would be released via BMG .
