Glacier Adventure - Glacier Walk

More information about our glacier walks.

Since 1994, Icelandic Mountain Guides has been Iceland's leading glacier tour operator. We offer a broad and exciting range of glacier tours for all skill levels and durations from three locations: From Reykjavík, on Sólheimajokull in South Iceland and in Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National park in the south east.

All tours include basic safety equipment. Our expert guides are highly trained in safety and first aid, and they are bursting with interesting information about Iceland that they can't wait to share with you.

Glacier Walks from Reykjavík

Glacier Day Tours give you a chance to view, feel, and even taste (yes, we said it!) these spectacular phenomena. On our Glacier Tours, you don‘t just see the glacier. We give you a pair of crampons, an axe, a harness and some rope and take you for a walk on the ice field: peer into a moulin or drink the crystal clear meltwater. The tours give you a real up close experience with those frozen giants, with transfer to and from the capital.

Approximately 11% of Iceland is covered with glaciers, and owing to logistics and road access, Iceland is probably the best place in the world to see these frozen giants. The biggest glaciers in Iceland are also the easiest to reach from the capital Reykjavík: there is only about a two hour drive to the fourth biggest glacier in the south of Iceland. Glacier Day tours from Icelandic Mountain Guides give a chance to view, feel and even taste these spectacular phenomena.

Glacier Walks from Sólheimajökull

Are you driving the Ring Road on the south coast and want to stop in for a tour along the way? Then you will find your adventure one our our South Iceland Bases at Sólheimajökull or Mýrdalsjökull . Stop by our meeting point at the glacier and catch one of our daily glacier hikes or in summer try a kayak tour on the lagoon in front of the glacier. The Mýrdalsjökull base is the starting point for snowmobile and ATV / Quad bike tours on the black sand beaches below.

Glacier Walks from Skaftafell

The Skaftafell National Park is about 5 hours drive from Reykjavík. In Skaftafell we have a sales office close to the the Visitor Centre which is the starting point for our tours there. The Glacier Walks are the most popular tours all year round. They come in different length and difficulty and are available from the age of 10 years. In winter glacier hike with an Ice Cave visit become travellers' favourite choice.

It was amazing and exceeded our expectations! Very well organized, easy check in, quality equipment, comfortable ride in the super jeep. Our guide, Maria, was truly fabulous! For those who may be nervous she was excellent, highly experienced, very safety minded, and just super fun to boot! It is a must to see especially with the receding glacier. Thank you Maria and the Katla team!🙂

Amazing glacier tour! The natural beauty is absolutely stunning. Our tour guide was excellent and knew some spots which were different from those that most tour operators visit - and far better. Beautiful, quiet, just us. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Iceland!

Our tour guide, Martin, is really nice. We enjoyed his story about the glacier. We also took group picture for us. I don’t know what else you can expect from a tour. Martin is GREAT!

The unique geological features of Icelandic glaciers make them a must-see destination for nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike.

One of the most famous glaciers in Iceland is the Vatnajökull Glacier, which covers an area of over 8,100 square kilometers. This majestic glacier is not only the largest in Europe but also one of the most accessible. Its ever-changing ice formations and crystal-clear ice caves provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors. The Svínafellsjökull Glacier, an outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull, is another popular destination for glacier hiking. Its rugged terrain and stunning ice formations make it a favorite among adventure seekers.

Safety Precautions and Equipment for Glacier Hiking

Glacier hiking is an exhilarating activity, but it's important to prioritize safety at all times. Before setting out on a glacier hike, it's crucial to be well-prepared and equipped with the necessary gear. Proper clothing, including waterproof and windproof layers, is essential to protect against the unpredictable Icelandic weather. Additionally, sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and crampons for traction on the icy surface are a must.

It's highly recommended to join a guided glacier hiking tour to ensure your safety and make the most of your experience. Expert guides are well-versed in glacier navigation and are equipped with the knowledge to assess the conditions and potential risks. They will provide you with essential safety equipment, such as helmets, harnesses, and ice axes, and guide you through the glacier's ever-changing landscape.

Popular Glacier Hiking Locations in Iceland

Iceland offers a multitude of stunning locations for glacier hiking, each with its own unique features and charm. The Sólheimajökull Glacier, located on the South Coast, is a popular choice for adventurers looking to witness the awe-inspiring beauty of ice formations. Its dramatic landscapes, including deep crevasses and ice sculptures, create a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

Another remarkable glacier is the Langjökull Glacier, situated in the highlands of Iceland. Its vast icy expanse stretches as far as the eye can see, offering hikers the opportunity to explore its icy wonders. The Langjökull Glacier is known for its ice tunnels, which provide an extraordinary glimpse into the heart of the glacier. These man-made tunnels offer a unique perspective on the glacial environment and are an unforgettable addition to any glacier hiking experience.

Guided Glacier Hiking Tours in Iceland

For those seeking a hassle-free and enriching glacier hiking experience, joining a guided tour is highly recommended. Numerous tour operators in Iceland specialize in glacier hiking and provide a range of options to suit different preferences and skill levels. Whether you're a novice hiker or an experienced mountaineer, there's a tour that will cater to your needs.

Guided tours offer the advantage of expert guidance and local knowledge. Experienced guides will lead you through the glacier's ever-changing landscape, sharing their insights into the glacial formations, geology, and environmental significance. They will also ensure your safety by providing essential equipment and teaching you proper hiking techniques. With a guided tour, you can relax and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the Icelandic glaciers.

Best Times of the Year for Glacier Hiking in Iceland

Glacier hiking in Iceland is a seasonal activity, with the best time to visit typically between April and October. During this period, the weather is relatively milder, and the glaciers are more accessible. The summer months of June, July, and August offer the longest days, providing ample daylight for extended hiking adventures.

It's important to note that weather conditions in Iceland can be unpredictable, and glaciers are constantly changing. It's recommended to check the weather forecast and glacier conditions before embarking on a hike. Additionally, booking your tour in advance is advisable, as popular tours tend to fill up quickly during the peak tourist season.

Tips for a Successful Glacier Hiking Experience

To make the most of your glacier hiking adventure in Iceland, here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

Dress appropriately: Layer your clothing, starting with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by insulating layers, and a waterproof outer layer. Don't forget to wear warm socks and gloves.

Stay hydrated and nourished: Carry enough water and snacks to keep yourself energized throughout the hike. Glacier hiking can be physically demanding, and it's important to refuel your body.

Listen to your guide: Follow your guide's instructions and safety guidelines at all times. They have extensive knowledge of the glacier and will ensure your safety throughout the hike.

Capture the moment: Bring a camera to capture the stunning beauty of the glaciers. However, be mindful of the conditions and prioritize your safety over photography.

Leave no trace: Respect the environment and leave nothing behind. Preserve the pristine beauty of the glaciers for future generations to enjoy.

Glacier Hiking versus Ice Climbing in Iceland

Glacier hiking and ice climbing are both exciting activities that allow you to explore the icy wonders of Iceland. While glacier hiking involves trekking across the glacier's surface, ice climbing takes the adventure to new heights by scaling vertical ice walls and frozen waterfalls.

Glacier hiking is suitable for individuals of various fitness levels and requires no prior climbing experience. It offers a unique opportunity to witness the glacier's beauty up close and learn about its formation. On the other hand, ice climbing is a more physically demanding activity that requires technical skills and specialized equipment. It provides a thrilling challenge for those seeking an adrenaline rush and a sense of accomplishment.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability of Glacier Hiking

As captivating as glacier hiking may be, it's important to consider its environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. Glaciers are sensitive ecosystems that are greatly affected by climate change. The melting of glaciers not only alters the landscape but also impacts the surrounding environment and wildlife.

To minimize your ecological footprint, choose tour operators that prioritize sustainability and practice responsible tourism. These operators adhere to strict guidelines to protect the fragile glacial environment and educate visitors about the importance of preserving these natural wonders. By supporting sustainable glacier hiking practices, you can contribute to the long-term preservation of Iceland's glaciers.

Why Glacier Hiking in Iceland is a Must-Do Experience

Glacier hiking in Iceland offers a truly unforgettable adventure that immerses you in the raw and mesmerizing beauty of nature. From the striking blue ice to the awe-inspiring ice caves, every step reveals a new wonder to behold. With expert guides leading the way, you can explore the glaciers safely while gaining a deeper understanding of their significance.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced hiker, glacier hiking in Iceland is an activity that should not be missed. It allows you to witness the power and fragility of these magnificent ice formations and develop a greater appreciation for the natural world. So, pack your warmest clothes, lace up your hiking boots, and embark on an expedition of a lifetime in Iceland's mesmerizing icy realm.

The 7 Best Iceland Glacier Hiking Tours [2024 Reviews]

Iceland is truly the land of ice and fire. Here you’ll find volcanoes and glaciers side-by-side, and glacial lagoons depositing icebergs into the sea only a few miles away from geysers shooting scalding hot water high into the sky.

If you’re interested in glaciers and their impact on the landscape, Iceland is the best place in the world to come and observe them in action.

Because the best way to explore glaciers is on a guided glacier tour, some tours only take in one aspect of a glacier while others encompass everything from the glacier to the terminal lake, including waterfalls and ice caves.

1. 5-hour glacier hike adventure from skaftafell.

  • Departure Point : Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center
  • Departure Time : 10:30 AM, 2:30 PM
  • Duration : 5 hours
  • Includes : Certified glacier guide, glacier hike, ice ax, crampons, harness, helmet, pure glacial water, and free parking

If you’re anything like me, you find glaciers fascinating. In some ways, they’re like rivers, but in many other important ways, they’re completely different.

This is the best glacier tour if you want to learn about glaciers—how they are formed, what they do, how they terminate, and their role in the study of global warming.

Not only will you hike across Vatnajökull Glacier in a small group led by an experienced guide, but you’ll also see ice sculptures and deep crevasses. During your hike, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views of Skaftafell National Park.

Your certified guide will introduce you to some more advanced techniques of glacier hiking and give you the opportunity to taste pure glacier water.

This is the longer version of this tour. If you simply want a short hike along a glacier without so much educational input, check out the final tour below.

By the time you return to the Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center, you’ll be an expert on glaciers and Arctic exploration. This glacier tour will provide you with memories that last a lifetime.

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, other experiences you may enjoy:, 2. 2-day south coast tour with glacier hike & boat tour.

  • Departure Point : Pick up from Reykjavik hotels
  • Departure Time : 9 AM
  • Duration : 2 days
  • Includes : Experienced tour guide, visits to 4 waterfalls, a walk on a black beach, a glacier boat tour, a glacier hike with safety equipment, Wi-Fi aboard the bus, and overnight accommodation with breakfast

This is the best glacier tour for people who want to see how ice and water created the beautiful landscape of Iceland.

Over the course of 2 memorable days, you’ll explore the southern coast of Iceland and visit many scenic spots. For me, the best thing about his tour is the 4 waterfalls you’ll visit, including Seljalandsfoss.

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best-loved waterfalls in Iceland not only because it is powerful and aesthetically pleasing but also since visitors can walk behind the falls and observe the world through a rippling curtain of water.

Another highlight of this tour is the amphibious boat cruise across Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Icebergs break away from the bottom of the glacier and float out across the lagoon.

You may find the lagoon familiar because it has been used as the setting for several Hollywood movies, including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider .

The beaches near Jökulsárlón are fascinating. Because of black basalt formed in hexagonal columns by lava flows, you’ll walk across a beach of smooth black pebbles and see intriguing formations of basalt columns in the cliffs.

Frequently, icebergs wash ashore and sit stranded on the black beach, sparkling like giant diamonds.

If you like glaciers, you’ll love the 1½-hour hike across Mýrdasjökull Glacier on this tour. The icecap of this glacier covers an active volcano that is expected to erupt soon.

It is constantly supervised by a dedicated team of geologists who will warn the local population when the activity inside the magma chamber indicates an imminent eruption.

This comprehensive tour of the south coast of Iceland will provide you with countless photo opportunities.

By the time you return to your hotel in Reykjavik, you’ll have a strong impression of how volcanoes, ice, and water have shaped the geography of this amazing country.

3. 2-Day South Coast Tour With Blue Ice Caves From Reykjavik

  • Departure Point : Nicetravel Office, Fiskislóð, Reykjavik
  • Includes : Experienced tour guide, visits to 4 waterfalls, a walk along a black sand beach, a visit to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, an experience inside an ice cave, safety equipment, 1-night’s accommodation, breakfast, and free Wi-Fi aboard the bus

This is the best Iceland glacier trip for anybody who wants to tour the glacial landscape of the south coast and explore inside an ice cave.

Maybe you’re visiting Iceland primarily to see the glaciers and Arctic landscape, but the waterfalls are spectacular.

At Skógafoss, the powerful Skóga River falls 200 feet in a single drop. This picturesque waterfall has been used as a setting in several Hollywood and Bollywood movies, including Thor: The Dark World .

And speaking of film sets, this tour also takes in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, with its eerie collection of icebergs breaking away from the glacier and floating out to sea.

Near this famous lagoon, you’ll visit the sleepy village of Vik, the most southerly settlement in Iceland.

Just west of Vik, you can walk along Reynisfjara Beach, which is famous for its black sand and distinctive basalt columns.

If you’re lucky, you’ll catch sight of puffins diving into the Atlantic Ocean from one of the offshore igneous formations.

North of the village, the beautiful wilderness found in the Skaftafell National Park will leave you breathless. However, it’s inside nearby Vatnajökull National Park where you’ll enjoy the highlight of this trip.

Every year, shifts in the ice and seasonal changes in temperature create ice caves inside Vatnajökull National Park.

You’ll be driven by Super Jeep across the icy landscape to one of these blue ice caves and led underground by an experienced guide.

Get your camera ready to capture the spectacular play of light across the sparkling ice crystals. You’ll probably never again see such a magical place.

4. Skaftafell National Park: 3-Hour Glacier Hike

  • Departure Point: Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center
  • Departure Time : 10 AM, 2 PM (during busy times of the year there are more start times)
  • Duration : 3 hours
  • Includes : Expert guide, bus transport to the glacier, hike along a glacier, necessary safety equipment

This is the best Iceland glacier trip for anybody who simply wants to hike along a glacier without all the other bells and whistles. You’ll also get great views of the ice-capped mountains of Skaftafell National Park and the glacial landscape of South Iceland.

After meeting your certified guide at Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center, you’ll be issued a helmet, harness, ice ax, and crampons. Then you’ll be driven to Vatnajökull Glacier, where your guide will help you to don your safety equipment.

Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest glacier, so you have a lot of ground to cover on your hike. Your experienced guide will aid you while you navigate across the ice for between 60 and 90 minutes.

Along the way, you can examine deep surface cracks and crevasses. Your guide will teach you about the vertical shafts called moulins formed by melting water. You’ll probably come across ice tunnels, where you can observe how blue the ice turns deeper into the glacier.

After this mystical experience, you’ll leave Skaftafell National Park with a wealth of memories that will last a lifetime.

5. Crystal Ice Cave Tour From Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

  • Departure Point: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (a 5-hour drive from Reykjavik)
  • Departure Time : 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM
  • Duration : 2½ hours
  • Includes : Certified glacier guide, transportation to Vatnajökull Glacier, and tour inside an ice cave

This is the best tour if what you really want is to explore inside an ice cave. Accompanied by an expert guide, this is your chance to ask all the questions you ever wanted to about glaciers and ice caves.

After meeting your certified guide at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, you’ll be driven across the stunning glacial landscape until you reach an ice cave.

Before you descend, your guide will provide you with the necessary safety equipment and help you prepare.

Once inside the cave, you’ll be amazed by the blue ice formations. Enjoy exploring the natural cavern and take as many photographs as you like.

6. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Full-Day Tour From Reykjavik

  • Departure Point: Tour Bus Stop 12, Höfõatorg Reykjavik
  • Departure Time : 7 AM
  • Duration : 14 hours
  • Includes : Expert guide, visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, visit Vik village, visit Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, and Wi-Fi on the bus

If you want to see all the main attractions of the south coast of Iceland in just one day, this is the best tour for you. It’s amazing how the tour guide packs so many fascinating sites into a 14-hour period.

The first stop on this tour is Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you will have the opportunity to take a lagoon cruise and sail between icebergs (weather conditions permitting).

You’ll also visit nearby Diamond Beach, where icebergs stranded on the black sand glitter in the sun like diamonds.

At lunchtime, you’ll be transported to Vik, the most southerly village in Iceland. Stop for a look around a traditional Icelandic village and maybe try out a local restaurant.

After this, you’ll travel to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where you can admire the scenic beauty and maybe take a stroll behind the waterfall.

On your return journey to Reykjavik, you’ll have the opportunity to view Eyjafjallajökull on a clear day. The volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajökull ice cap is the one that erupted in 2010, disrupting air traffic in Northern Europe for a week.

7. Iceland 2-Day Tour With Ice Cave & Glacier Lagoon

  • Departure Point : Pick up from hotels in Reykjavik
  • Includes : Expert tour guide, see 2 waterfalls, stroll along a black sand beach, visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, explore an ice cave, 1-night’s accommodation, breakfast, and Wi-Fi on the bus

If you like waterfalls, caves, and windswept beaches, you’ll love this tour of the south coast of Iceland. Get your camera ready for memorable landscapes and unique igneous formations.

After being picked up from your hotel in Reykjavik, you’ll be transported to the south coast to admire the stunning coastal scenery.

At Seljalandsfoss, you can walk behind the powerful waterfall and admire the powerful rush of water between you and the sky.

Continuing east, you’ll come to Reynisfjara Beach, renowned for its igneous formations and black sand.

There you can explore the basalt column cave and see the offshore Reynisdrangar stacks, which folktales claim are 3 frozen trolls wading through the water.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon isn’t far away, with icebergs bobbing upon its crystal-clear water. It’s no surprise that this lake has featured in many Hollywood movies, like Batman Begins .

Your tour includes a walk along Diamond Beach, where icebergs from the lagoon have washed ashore onto the black sand beach and sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight.

But the true highlight of this tour is your ice cave adventure. A qualified guide will provide you with safety equipment before leading you inside a seasonal ice cave.

Within this frozen cavern, you’ll see mystical blue ice formations that will stand out in your memories forever.

Iceland Travel Guide

There are many reasons the Land of Fire and Ice has seen an explosion in tourism since 2019. Not only can you see the Northern Lights, active volcanoes, glaciers, and puffins, you can also explore the glaciers on an ATV tour and even bake bread inside a pot buried underground.

What you decide to do in this fascinating country is your choice, but you should take the time to do some research before you go. This guide is here to inform you where you can go, what you can do, and how you can get there, because we want you to have the best vacation of your life in Iceland.

Airports & Entry

Most visitors to Iceland arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Although Iceland only has a population of 359 thousand people, in 2018 this busy airport handled 9.8 million passengers. Despite the number of visitors, there is only one terminal. You will find the check-in times minimal, with an average 20-minute waiting time at the security check.

Inside the terminal, you will find everything clearly signposted in English. Charging points for cellphones and laptops are provided in the waiting area along with free Wi-Fi.

Strollers are provided for children, and there is a dedicated kids’ play area. The usual selection of food outlets and shops are found on the upper floor of the main building. Manned information stands are located throughout the airport.

It is 30 miles from the airport to Reykjavik, the capital city. The speed limit is 55 mph, but the drive usually takes 50 minutes due to traffic. Shuttle bus services link KEF to the city, which you can book in advance online or pay for at the airport.

Some hotels offer airport collection, and you should ask about that when you book your room. You can, of course, jump in a taxi at the airport, but it will be extremely expensive compared to the airport bus service. Car rental is available at the airport, but it is advisable to book in advance.

Planning Tips

With so many exciting things to do and see in Iceland, you’re guaranteed to have a great holiday. However, things do not always go to plan, so here are 5 tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Tip #1: If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, go between September and March

It’s easier to view the Northern Lights when the sky is at its darkest. In Iceland, the nights are especially long between September and March, but the sky doesn’t grow dark enough to view this magical phenomenon during the summer months. However, do not plan a visit around a full moon, because its light can dampen the impact of this natural light display. The best days to go are around the time of a new moon.

Tip #2: Check out the SolarHam website

If you are especially interested in the Aurora Borealis and want to earn your Geek Badge, check out the SolarHam website. This techy site provides a 3-day geomagnetic forecast, which is useful for aurora hunters to select the best time to view the Northern Lights. The same site provides a satellite map of where the natural light show is right now, so you can look up if you’re near.

Tip #3: Take your time to enjoy all the attractions of Iceland

There’s so much to see in Iceland, it would be a crime not to explore and experience as much as you are able in the time you have. While you are there, do not miss the opportunity to see so many unforgettable natural phenomena in one place. There is nowhere else on the planet where you can see active volcanoes, glaciers, and ice caves , all in one national park.

Tip #4: Book everything in advance, especially in winter

Tourism is on the rise in Iceland, and hotel rooms, tours, and attractions get fully-booked ahead of time.  Don’t miss out on seeing the Northern Lights from the best vantage point possible because all the tours were booked-up before you arrived. Many tours like the ones detailed above offer a 24-hour-in-advance free cancellation, so you take no financial risk booking. Ask about free cancellation when buying your ticket.

Tip #5: Impress your friends with quintessentially Icelandic souvenirs

The budget chain store Bonus stocks many unique Icelandic products, such as Omnom chocolate, Icelandic specialty teas, herbal sea salt blends, and licorice mixed with chocolate. At Bonus, you can pick up great, inexpensive gifts for your friends! Vinbuoin, the state-run liquor store, sells a fine selection of renowned Icelandic spirits, including Iceland’s signature tipple, Brennivin.

And if you like to sort through other folks’ debris for the hidden treasures, a special weekend market is held at Kolaportio in downtown Reykjavik where Icelanders come to sell off their unwanted goods when moving to a new house. You could find anything!

Restaurants & Eating Out

Because of Iceland’s geographical position and climate, vegetables and grains are rare in traditional foods, and many famous dishes focus on preserved seafood or meat. Also, food was scarce in yesteryears, so every part of an animal or fish was eaten. You’ll find many traditional meals involve fish or meat that is salted, smoked, dried, or fermented. Watch out for such culinary delights as baked sheep’s head and fermented shark.

Seafood restaurants are common throughout Iceland, and all serve “fish of the day”, which is usually salmon, monkfish, haddock, or cod. However, if you wish, you can seek out some of the more exotic options. Humar is a kind of lobster caught off the south coast of Iceland, renowned for its tender and tasty flesh.

It is served fried, baked or grilled, though it can also be found as a pizza topping! Plokkfishkur is a fish stew, made to the chef’s specific recipe but usually combining white fish with onions, potatoes, milk, and flour. Harofiskur is a snack you can buy in any grocery store. It is dried stockfish, eaten with butter or straight out of a bag.

Because it is difficult to grow wheat in Iceland, there are many traditional varieties of rye bread, like flatkaka, baked in thin disks on hot stones. One variety of rye bread you should try is rugbrauo, a sweet-tasting, dark bread.

The reason rugbrauo is so interesting for visitors to Iceland is that a common baking technique is to bury a dough-filled pot near one of the many hot springs, such as Fontana Hot Springs, and use geothermal heat to bake the bread. Rugbrauo baked that way is also called hyerabrauo (hot-spring bread).

Icelanders don’t only eat fish and rye bread. Sheep are the most common livestock in Iceland, so lamb is often on the menu. Sheep wander freely around the countryside, eating seaweed, grass, and berries, which tends to make lamb tender with a mild flavor.

Smoked lamb is called hangikjöt and is often served boiled during the winter holidays. Also watch out for varieties of meat you won’t see in most other countries, like puffin, horse, and whale. Despite international concern over puffins and whales, they are still commonly consumed in Iceland.

A meal on vacation isn’t complete without dessert. Popular local sweets include rugbrauosis (rye bread ice cream), pönnukökur (Icelandic pancakes), and snuour (cinnamon bread covered in caramel or chocolate). A dairy product unique to Iceland is skyr.

It is a kind of sour milk cheese eaten like yogurt and often sweetened and flavored with fruit or vanilla.

Nightlife & Entertainment

With long, cold nights throughout the winter, it’s no surprise Icelanders love their nightlife, and much of it is centered where most of the people live—Reykjavik. Because the capital is so small, most of the clubs and bars are within walking distance of one another. In fact, many are along one street, Laugavegur, the commercial artery of downtown.

Most social venues are informal and entrance fees rare. When Icelanders go out for the night, they tend to begin late, and many clubs and bars don’t get busy until after midnight. This is in part because alcohol in bars is expensive, so locals drink at home before setting out.

Many clubs and bars stay open as late as 5 am. Cocktail bars are a recent addition to Iceland’s nightlife, but with the booming tourist trade, they are rapidly expanding.

And don’t worry too much about safety at night. In 2019, the Institute for Economics and Peace in Sydney ranked Iceland the most peaceful nation on Earth for the 12 th year running. Crime rates in Reykjavik are probably lower than anywhere you have ever lived.

Getting Around

Iceland is a small country covering an area slightly smaller than Kentucky. If you wanted to drive from Reykjavik on the west coast to Faskruosfjorour on the east coast, the 425 miles route would take only 8½ hours.

However, because of its small population outside of the capital, you cannot rely on public transport to go sightseeing around the country or reach the best place to view the northern lights. This leaves you with two options: hiring a car or booking a coach tour, like the 3-day Golden Circle tour detailed above.

Within the capital and its immediate area, you do have more options: bus, taxi, bicycle, or walk. The public bus service is inexpensive and efficient, and you can ask for help to find the right bus from your hotel reception. Given that Reykjavik is so small a city, taxis are affordable.

If you want a little exercise, bicycle rentals are available in many hotels, and the city is crisscrossed by dedicated bicycle paths. If you decide to walk, make sure you wrap up well. The weather can deteriorate rapidly in Iceland.

Accommodations

Over the past few years, Iceland has seen a huge expansion in tourism. With a 378% increase since 2010, hotel rooms fill up quickly. Through Christmas and summer, hotels are usually fully booked. Since 228 of Iceland’s 359 thousand citizens live within the capital and its immediate hinterland, settlements throughout the rest of Iceland are small and rooms for visitors limited. Most hotels are in the capital.

You will probably find it most convenient to stay in Reykjavik. You will find a broad range of hotels there, it is near the airport, and many of the attractions along with most of the nightlife are found there or nearby. Many organized tours to other parts of Iceland and major tourist attractions set out from Reykjavik, such as most of the Northern Lights tours detailed above.

Within the downtown and central area of Reykjavik you will find a choice of luxury hotels, like the Hotel Borg downtown and The Icelandair Hotel Marina, overlooking the harbor. If you head a little more out of the center, you’ll find more affordable hostels, such as The Capital Inn and Bus Hostel Reykjavik .

There are some popular hotels outside of the capital near to tourist attractions, such as Hotel Skaftafell in the Vatnajökull National Park, which offers spectacular views of Iceland’s largest mountain, or Skyrhusid Guesthouse near Lake Jökulsarion in the south. Wherever you decide to stay, the important thing is to book in advance. If you don’t, you will miss out on the best rooms.

Iceland is not the place to go if you want year-round sunshine and dry weather. In fact, on 22 nd December there are only 4 hours of daylight, because that is the shortest day. That’s great if you want to see the Aurora Borealis, since it can only be seen during dark nights, but not so good for other sightseeing. In contrast, the longest day boasts 21 hours of daylight, 21 st June.

The “warm” summer period covers June, July, and August, with an average daily high of 55 0 F and a low of 46 0 F. Yes, 55 0 F is their summer high! Summers are short and cloudy. The winter period covers November through March, two months longer than summer, and is cold, wet, windy, and overcast, with frequent snow. The average daily high drops to 35 0 F in January with a low of 27 0 F.

If your main interest is the Northern Lights, you should go anytime September through March, because the sky is dark enough to view those fantastic electromagnetic displays. If the Aurora Borealis does not interest you, you’ll get the warmest weather and longer days from the end of June to mid-August.

Attractions

The Aurora Borealis is not the only unique and fascinating attraction in Iceland. The Land of Fire and Ice is the best place in the world to see and experience the majesty and power of two extremes in Nature: glaciers and volcanoes. These attractions are all part of what is called the “Golden Circle”. Taking a day tour of the Golden Circle with a guide is a great way to take in all of the best sights.

12 miles from KEF is the world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Here you can laze in pools of hot, milky blue water heated by a lava flow. Nearby stands the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant, which uses superheated water from the lava flow to generate electricity and also provide heat for a municipal water heating system.

There are geothermal spas like the Blu Lagoon throughout Iceland, so wherever you choose to stay, you can find one near you and experience the power of molten rock.

If ice and Arctic landscapes interest you, head 140 miles east from Reykjavik to Vatnajökull National Park , which is centered on Vatnajökull glacier and the surrounding beautiful landscape. This park covers 14% of Iceland and is filled with glacial rivers and active volcanoes. One of the best ways to see this park is with a horseback riding tour ! You can get up close and see all the attractions.

Vatnajökull glacier empties into the glacial lake of Jökulsarion in the south, where you can see 100-feet-tall icebergs freshly broken away from the glacier. Jökulsarion served as a setting in several major Hollywood movies.

On your drive back to Reykjavik, you can see two beautiful waterfalls around Skogar. The first, Skogafoss, is an impressive waterfall and a popular destination for Icelandic day-trippers. The best way to see these national parks is with a snowmobile tour .

18 miles west of Skogafoss is picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall . A path allows sightseers to pass behind the curtain of water as it falls into the crystal-clear plunge pool.

Perhaps one of the most unique attractions is seeing the continental plates splitting apart at Silfra. Here the North American and Eurasian plates are separating. If you are daring you can take a snorkel tour of Silfra and see it for yourself!

If it’s man-made cultural and historical attractions you seek, you’ll find plenty to do and see around Reykjavik. The capital’s earliest history stretches back to 874, but it only became a true city in 1785.

Around Reykjavik, you’ll find an interesting assortment of museums and tourist attractions, like the National Museum of Iceland and the Reykjavik Maritime Museum.

A famous landmark visitors flock to see is the Hallgrimskirkja Church, which is the largest church in Iceland. This unique structure was designed by a local architect to resemble the glaciers and mountains of Iceland.

The landscapes are incredible and will take your breath away. Even if you live somewhere like Alaska or Western Canada and are in close proximity to glaciers, there is still something unique about being so close to the ones in Iceland!

The frozen wonders of Iceland glaciers are a must see

#1. Crystal Ice Cave Tour In Iceland (3 Hours)

Ice cave tours in Iceland are one of the most popular types of glacier tours and that is not surprising! Going in a crystal ice cave in Iceland is a mindblowing experience and will meet and exceed your every expectation! Don’t forget to check out our list of the best Ice caves in Iceland!

Ice cave tours only happen in Iceland during certain times of the year, so if you have your heart set on one of these Iceland glacier tours, make sure to book your trip during the winter.

If the crystal cave hasn’t been frozen solid for a certain period of time, the tours are not run for the safety of all. You wouldn’t want the ice cave to collapse while you are on the tour so it is better to be safe than sorry!

When choosing your  ice cave tour in Iceland , be sure to look at exactly which glacier you are going to go explore. This way, you won’t book a tour at a glacier that is four hours away when you could have booked a similar ice cave tour right down the street from where you are staying!

#2. Snowmobiling On A Glacier Full-Day Tour From Reykjavik (8-12 Hours)

If you are looking for a fun and unique Iceland glacier tour, why not ride a snowmobile on top of a glacier? This is fun for the whole family, but kids particularly love this snowmobile tour from Reykjavik.

Pretty much every snowmobile tour in Iceland begins and ends in Reykjavik which makes it easy to book and enjoy. That being said, there are a few snowmobile tours like this one that just includes the snowmobiling where you will have to drive and meet your group.

If you want to choose to snowmobile as your Iceland glacier tour, make sure that you pack very warm clothing as you will be exposed to the elements! Although they do give you warmer clothes when you take a snowmobiling tour in Iceland, you will want to dress in your own warm layers as well.

Most Iceland glacier tours that provide snowmobiling also include an entire day of fun! That is why these tours are usually 8-12 hours in length. While snowmobiling on a glacier is a huge part of this tour, it isn’t the only part.

You can be prepared to see waterfalls, lava fields, and geysers on top of snowmobiling, depending on which Iceland glacier tour package you choose!

#3. Subterranean Church And Tunnels Iceland Glacier Tour (3-10 Hours)

This is one of the more unique Iceland glacier tours on this list. Unlike the first option where you will see some crystal blue ice caves on the surface of the glacier, this exciting Iceland glacier tour takes you inside the actual glacier itself! You will head to west Iceland to Langjokull Glacier and part of many tours will include seeing hot springs and beautiful Icelandic wilderness.

Once you have arrived, you will descend down 1600 feet into the glacier to visit the worlds largest man-made ice tunnel.

Once you are literally inside the glacier and deep under the surface of the ice, you will get to explore the blue and white tunnels and you will be completely surrounded by thick ice. If you aren’t good in tight spaces, this may not be the right Iceland glacier tour choice for you!

The coolest part of this Iceland glacier tour is that there is an actual church hidden away below the ice and you get to see it on this tour. It is one of the best places to see on your Iceland Itinerary!

The chapel can be rented out for actual weddings and there are even little benches for guests to sit on with little blankets for them to use during your big day. Even if you aren’t getting married, seeing this church buried deep below the ice is a highlight of this Iceland glacier tour.

Ice caves are gorgeous

#4. Glacier Ice Climbing Tour (4-5 Hours)

This Iceland glacier tour is Victoria’s favorite and you will not be let down by choosing to go ice climbing during your trip. Of course, deciding if this glacier tour is the right one for you is completely up to you and you alone.

Glacier climbing tours in Iceland are meant for newbies [unless you book otherwise] so you don’t have to be an ice climbing pro to book them. That being said, you should be in good physical fitness, have decent upper body strength, and a good sense of adventure.

Many glacier climbing tours are family-friendly but be sure to ask if there is a minimum age requirement for your kid. There are multiple glaciers in Iceland, but the most popular tours run in Skaftafell National Park which is home to Europe’s largest glacier. If you aren’t heading up to east Iceland near the Skaftafell area, don’t worry, there are other Ice climbing tour options for you!

Book Here: Skaftafell Ice Climbing (4 Hours)

#5. Glacier Hiking And Walking Tour (5-10 Hours)

If you want a more active Iceland glacier tour but don’t really want to put on a harness and climb up the side of the ice like the option listed above, why not consider a glacier hike ?

Glacier hikes in Iceland are perfect for those looking to get up close with a glacier without doing anything too crazy. If you don’t like the word hiking [like us heehee], then there are even options for glacier walking tours!

Glacier walking tours take you on top of one of Iceland’s impressive glaciers but you go at a slower and more enjoyable speed. The glacier walks may also be coupled with other beautiful destinations in Iceland so you are getting more bang for your buck.

Glacier hiking in Iceland is a bit more involved than a simple walking tour and may last longer and be slightly more difficult. Either way, both walking and hiking are usually great options for families and larger groups looking for the perfect Iceland glacier tour.

#6 South Coast & Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon 2 Day Tour (2 Days)

If you’re looking for an Iceland glacier tour that is packed with sights and adventure, you must check out the South Coast tour . Not only is this tour filled to the brim with iconic views such as a glacier’s edge, and some waterfalls, but this tour is 2 days in length, making it one of the best overnight Iceland glacier tours around!

On the first day, you’ll get to encounter lush farmlands, volcanos, waterfalls, and more before moving to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. You’ll stay overnight at the Geroi Country Hotel, where you can rest, relax and even marvel at the majestic mountain region close by.

Your second day starts with breakfast and then you will take a locally guided tour to an area near Prong, which is close to the edge of the glacier. This specific tour offers you the opportunity to see a beautiful but lesser travel to place– meaning there are great landscapes, views, and less people and tourist vibes!

On the way back to Reykjavik you will then stop by the Selkalandsfoss waterfall, which is one of the most iconic falls on the South Coast. You can walk up this falls footpath, and then settle back into the bus as the tour returns to Reykjavik around 10 pm.

This long tour is totally worth it, and the glacier lagoon is beautiful– sea water flows into the lagoon as huge blocks of ice break off the glacier. It is a must see!

This same guide will take you to the base of Falljokull, an outlier glacier of the Vatnajokull ice cap, where they will then lead you up to the cave. Just a warning: this glacier is the highest peak of Iceland’s tallest moutian range, so be prepared for some heights!

And know that on a clear day, you should be able to see Hvannadalshnukur in the distance– so keep an eye out! This small group experience is life changing, as it is a tour that offers information, a good hike, and spectacular views you won’t soon forget.

#9 Tour of the Golden Circle, Glacier Lagoon, & Ice Cave (3 days)

Because there are so many glaciers and wonders to witness in Iceland, you may want to consider spending a lot of time (and maybe some money?) on your Iceland glacier tours!

During your first day of this 3-day tour, you will explore the Golden Circle with Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss . From stopping at the UNESCO and Thinvellir National Park, this first day is filled with must-see destinations that are rich with history and geology.

During your second day you get to explore the South Coast with stops at Reynisfjara, Glacier Lagoon and an Ice Cave visit. Between the icebergs and Diamond beach, you’ll want to bring a camera for pictures! And during the winter months, you can also see the Northern Lights here too!

On your last day of the trip, day three is all focused on the glaciers. This glacier hiking adventure allows for you to explore one of Vatnajokull’s outlet glaciers with the help of a certified guide.

The unique ice formations and crevices and falls are always changing, so each group will experience something new! After your hike, you will be dropped off in Reykjavik, but not before you can conclude your trip with a scenic journey back to the capital. These stops are magical, frozen, and stunning, so you really should consider spending the time to explore them!

The unique perspective of glaciers of Iceland is unforgettable

#10 Ice Caving and Glacier Hiking at Vatnajokull (4 Hours)

Vatnajokull is Europe’s largest glacier, and many of Iceland’s glacier tours offer a fantastic look at this frozen icon, but the ice caving and glacier hiking tours to Vatnajokull is probably one of the best opportunities to visit this phenomenon. In this tour, you have the opportunity to gear up and follow a guide to set foot on the ice of Vatnajokull and trek through the magnificent scenery.

In this opportunity, guests also have a fantastic chance to go inside an ice cave. Ice caves are only accessible during winter when the temperature drops below zero and the water from rivers underneath freeze, leaving space for you to explore.

Each year new caves are formed, so if you take this tour more than once, you will never see the same thing twice! Hiking back over the glacier through this landscape of rugged ice is fantastic. And although we mentioned another ice cave tour at the beginning of this article, no tours are ever the same!

So make sure to consider your options depending on expedition length, guide information, location and more! You don’t want to miss the unique experiences they all can offer.

Iceland glacier tours are beautiful no matter what time of year or time of day you explore these frozen icons

What To Pack For Your Iceland Glacier Tour

When you are taking a glacier tour in Iceland, you are going to want to wear the proper clothing and be prepared. The weather in Iceland is no joke and changes quickly so dressing in warm waterproof clothing is key.

Some tours may provide you with cleats for walking on the ice or a suit for snowmobiling, but that is it. It is up to you to dress correctly for the environment. Proper shoes, hats, gloves, jackets, and pants should be worn at the very minimum.

Recommended clothes to wear on your Iceland glacier tour:

Cold-Certified Waterproof Boots. Boots and shoes that are cold-certified are a must when taking tours in Iceland. If your feet are wet and cold the rest of your body won’t have any fun! We recommend these  Columbia Heavenly Omni-Heat Mid Calf Boot but proper shoes are so important to use that we wrote this entire post about the best boots to wear in Iceland during both the winter and summer!

Fleece Lined Leggings . Fleece lined leggings are our secret weapon to staying warm in Iceland. When you go on an Iceland glacier tour, you are going to literally be either on top of or inside a giant chunk of ice. Dressing in layers and wearing a fleece-lined base is important if you want to stay warm.

Omi-Heat Winter Jacket. We recommend a great winter jacket no matter what time you visit Iceland. If you are going on a glacier tour, a good winter jacket is even more important. We recommend a jacket with omni-heat technology. This technology reflects your body heat and keeps you even warmer. We like this  Columbia Omni-Heat Morning Light II Jacket. Since we know jackets are important, we have this entire post about choosing the right jacket for Iceland!

Waterproof Gloves. Waterproof gloves are so important as you will most likely be touching the sides of the wet ice. Some Iceland glacier tour operators provide you with gloves, but we have found them to all be pretty terrible in quality. If you want to safeguard your hands, it is best to buy some online like these waterproof suede gloves so that you ensure that you have a good quality pair before you arrive.

Balaclava. If you have never heard of a Balaclava, you are in for a real treat! A balaclava is the perfect thing to keep you warm when on an Icelandic glacier. A balaclava is better than a scarf because it still keeps your neck warm without flying away in the wind. This is important because Iceland is so windy and you need to close the gap between your neck and your jacket when on a glacier tour in Iceland.

Granola Bars. Most of these tours in Iceland do not include snacks so that is up to you to bring. If you are going on one of the longer tours of Iceland that are 10-13 hours long, you are going to want to be prepared with food! We love these  Quaker Granola Bars  and always bring food to Iceland since it is such an expensive country. You can easily buy bars in advance so you can save time and money once you are in Iceland.

Portable Power Bank. When taking glacier tours of Iceland, you will be gone from your hotel for a very long time. You are going to want to have your phone charged so you can document your wonderful experience in Iceland which is why we always recommend taking a  portable power bank like this one!   These portable chargers are good for multiple charges and will keep your phone ready for photos and calls if necessary.

what to pack on an iceland glacier tour

Whether you choose to climb on ice, ride on top of, or go inside, there is an Iceland glacier tour for everyone.

The crystal Ice cave tour is on many people’s bucket lists and we can tell you that you will not be disappointed? Have littles or don’t want anything too crazy? A glacier walk is perfect for you!

These best glacier tours in Iceland will have you packing your bags and planning your trip! Just don’t forget to wear the right clothing and you will be good to go!

The Glacier Experience tour starts with an introduction to the necessary glacier equipment provided in the tour and the basic safety rules needed to explore the beautiful  Sólheimajökull glacier . An expert guide will be there for you to ensure your safety and answer any questions throughout the whole tour. Then, you will take off on a short but scenic walk across the pitch-black volcanic ash and sands between the Sólheimajökull glacier and the parking lot.

The ash and sand are from the volcanic eruption in  Eyjafjallajökull stratovolcano that took place in the year 2010 and is a reminder of the closeness of volcanoes and glaciers in Iceland. That's truly a fantastic and unique start!

More about this tour

The Sólheimajökull glacier tongue originates at Mýrdalsjökull , which is famously also the home to the volcano Katla . There is no doubt that the glacier and the surrounding area are exquisite. Your knowledgeable glacier guide will point out to you how the glacier is retreating and give you a fascinating history and geology lesson to get you to understand the true magic of the glacier.

People having guided glacier hike in Iceland

Right at the foothills of the glacier, you will lace up your crampons and follow your guide to explore this otherworldly natural wonder, a rugged, raw, and ever-changing hub of ancient frozen water. This glacier hike is an adventure like no other, and with the rapid rate of global climate change, this popular activity is only available in very few parts of the world.

You will see how the primal elements shape and affect the glacier, creating mesmerizing labyrinths of ice ridges and  deep V-shaped crevasses  that crisscross and scar the surface of the ice. Not to mention the  enormous sinkholes , called “moulins,” that sometimes have drilled their way through the glacier, draining the meltwater of the ice through little waterfalls and streams.

The glacier also carries ashes of volcanic eruptions from the distant and not-so-distant past. You might even be lucky enough to collect a little of the  Eyjafjalljökull volcanic ash  from the world-famous 2010 eruption!

The hiking part of the tour is about 2 hours, with 1-1.5 hours spent on the glistening glacier.

Add some adventure to your Iceland tour and explore a great crawling glacier before it becomes inaccessible due to climate change.

For those choosing the roundtrip pick up from Reykjavik

If you select the Reykjavík pick-up option, our tour guide will pick you up at your chosen meeting location in Reykjavik. After pick-up, we drive in an easterly direction out of the city on our way to the glacier. On our way to and back from the glacier, we stop at a few of Iceland's most magnificent natural attractions: the waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss .

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

About an hour and a half from Reykjavik, we will arrive at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. The waterfall is about 65 meters (213 ft) high and can be inspected from different angles. The water flows from the Seljalandsá river, which has its origin at the infamous volcano glacier, Eyjafjallajökull. It is even possible to walk behind it during summer to experience it from another perspective!

Skogafoss waterfall

About 30 km further up the south coast, we have Skogafoss, another majestic phenomenon, located close to the small village of Skógar. It is one of Iceland's largest waterfalls, with a width of 25 meters (82 ft) and a spectacular 60 meter (197 ft) drop. Due to the amount of spray, single and even double rainbows are pretty frequent on sunny days.

What does meet on location entail?

Meet on location means traveling to the location of the tour yourself and then meeting our tour guides rather than being picked up and taken to the location.

How far from Reykjavik is the meet-up location for the tours at Solheimajokull?

We meet you at Sólheimajökull parking lot and the distance from Reykjavik is approx. 164 km / 101 mi. The drive takes around 2,5 hours.

For GPS: 63°31’00.48″N, 19°22’00.12W(WGS84).

What should I wear on our glacier trip in Iceland?

Iceland is known for its colorful weather. It can sometimes show you all 4 seasons in one day.

Dressing for this sort of weather can be a challenge so we always recommend dressing in layers .  3 or 4 upper layers are highly recommended such as a light t-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment, topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

Jeans are not recommended for our trips as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet.

Lightweight hiking pants, track pants or long cotton pants are best and then wind/waterproof pants over. We also recommend using sunglasses and sunscreen even if it is cloudy due to the high UV and sunlight reflecting off of the glacier.

You will need sturdy hiking boots with ankle support that fit crampons for the glacier hiking tours. If you do not own a pair then we rent out good hiking boots as well as a waterproof raincoat and trousers.

Do I need to bring a backpack on a glacier trip in Iceland?

We recommend bringing your own backpack on our full day or 1/2 day tours. It’s great to carry a small lunch and some extra clothing.

Can I bring my camera along on a glacier tour?

You can bring your camera along, and you should definitely bring one since the setting on the tour is full of amazing, scenic views.

I am pregnant, can I still join a glacier hike?

This is, of course, a personal choice, we have often had pregnant women on our trips. We recommend you take a close look at our trip description and difficulty rating , they will hopefully give you a better idea. It is also good to contact your physician, pregnant women’s health can be quite different. Feel free to contact us if you have further questions or concerns.

Do I need to bring a lunch with me on the glacier tours?

We do not provide lunch on any of our trips, so we recommend you bring your own lunch (for the longer trips), snacks and a bottle of water (you can refill it on the trip).

What are crampons?

Crampons are metal spikes that we attach to the soles of your hiking shoes, these enable you to walk on the glacier ice without slipping. Find out how to put crampons .

Is there a guide on each Arctic Adventures glacier tour?

Yes, there is a specially trained and certified glacier guide on every glacier tour that we offer.

What equipment is provided when taking part on a Glacier Hike?

When glacier hiking you will be provided with an ice axe, crampons, harness and helmet. This will help you to complete the tour safely. The minimum shoe size to attach crampons is EU 35.

Why are there glaciers in Iceland?

When snow stays long enough in one place it turns to ice. Over long periods of time, the ice layers up becoming huge blocks called glaciers. As there is a lot of snow in Iceland,  it forms to create ginormous glaciers that sweep across huge masses of land. Iceland is home to Europe’s largest glacier named Vatnajökull . This Glacier Guide will also tell you everything you may want to know about Glaciers.

What if it is raining?

Rain is not uncommon in Iceland. However, we do not let the rain stop our tours. This is why having appropriate clothing is very important to keep you warm and dry. Nature is not something that we can control and therefore we need to adapt to the weather. If your safety is compromised by going on the tour, we will cancel and you will be fully refunded.

The Falling Glacier

Interestingly falljökull is one of the few glaciers that is melting, but not retreating . the reason for it is kind of hidden in its name., why is the ice blue, playground for grownups, i felt the adrenaline rushing through my veins, as i went abseiling, taking one step after another, the ice cracking under my crampons., the last generation to walk on glaciers, when the first settlers arrived in iceland, the glaciers were significantly smaller than today and were only located on top of mountain ranges. vatnajökull is not only europe’s second largest glacier, it’s also one of the youngest..

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland's many geothermal spas and its most popular. The Blue Lagoon is located very closely to Keflavik International Airport, making it the perfect stop at the beginning or the end of your getaway.

A dip in the Blue Lagoon is sure to provide you with relaxation and breathtaking views.

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

Western Iceland is where you can find Snæfellsjökull National Park, home to the beautiful glacier.

Snæfellsjökull was declared a national park in 2001 and is only one of three national parks in the country .

Snæfellsjökull is described in Jules Verne's famous novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

There are several black sand beaches in Iceland that are truly a sight unlike any other.

A GUIDE TO SIGHTSEEING IN ITALY: A ROMAN ADVENTURE AWAITS YOU

One of these is Reynisfjara, a black sand beach good for seeing but not for swimming because of the cold water and strong currents that make it dangerous.

You can also see the sparkle of Diamond Beach while in Iceland. This black sand beach is full of diamond resembling ice, making the water shimmer and shine.

Again, Diamond Beach is another beautiful landmark, but avoid swimming in this water, mainly because of the icebergs that can cause injury.

Vatnajokull glacier is Europe's largest. You can explore the glacier on foot or rent a snowmobile to see more in a short time.

There are so many breathtaking ice caves to explore throughout the glacier.

Vatnajokull may look familiar to you, even if you haven't visited Iceland before, as it was featured in the HBO series "Game of Thrones" and two "James Bond" films.

Vatnajökull National Park is where you can find Skaftafell nature reserve. Skaftafell nature reserve has been a part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2008. Glacier lagoons, black sand and mesmerizing rock formations can all be found here.

EXPLORING THAILAND'S TAPESTRY OF TRADITION, ADVENTURE, TIMELESS BEAUTY

It is just about 45 minutes from Diamond Beach.

Taking a Golden Circle tour is a must-do activity on a trip to Iceland. The Golden Circle is a scenic route where you'll be able to see Iceland in all its beauty.

How much time you carve out for this depends on how long you want to spend at each stop. You can easily spend days exploring this area, or you can rent a car and spend a few hours driving around.

There are three main stops part of the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall.

Reykjavík is filled with bars and restaurants , making the city a great spot for thriving nightlife at the end of a busy day exploring.

While here, you can also visit Hallgrimskirkja Church and stop by one of the many local swimming pools throughout the city.

AUSTRALIA TRAVEL GUIDE: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT THE LAND DOWN UNDER

Skogafoss waterfall is a breathtaking beauty you will not want to miss when traveling to Iceland.

Get your cameras ready for this stop, because you'll want to snap a picture of you in front of the enormous waterfall. It's not a bad idea to pack a pair of waterproof shoes on your visit.

You don't need to carve out too much time for this, 30 to 45 minutes will do. Rainbows are very common here, so keep your eye out for that, too.

While in Iceland, you'll most likely be able to cross "see the northern lights" off your bucket list.

Making a plan to see the colorful lights in the sky is a little tricky, since their occurrence is not super predictable. That said, visiting between September and April, when the nights are long and dark, will give you the best possibility of seeing the aurora borealis.

The Best Places to Travel This July, From Key West to Montenegro

By Caitlin Morton

Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll

School’s out, the sun is shining, and it’s officially time to plan a proper summer vacation . The best places to travel in July are all about making those OOO days really count, even if it means venturing a bit off the radar—think diving tours off the coast of Bonaire, multi-day hiking trips through central Iceland, and Olympic Games viewing parties some 9,700 miles outside of Paris (more on that later). And if you’d rather fill your trip with more relaxing and less adventuring, fear not: We have plenty of destinations for you as well.

We know you’re probably itching for a spectacular holiday as much as we are, so we’ve gathered up a list of places that cover the geographical gamut. Whether you want to make an easy trip to one of the coolest cities in the US (we reveal that answer below) or take multiple flights to reach your final once-in-a-lifetime destination, here are 11 of the best places to travel in July.

This article has been updated since its original publish date.

GlacierNationalPark

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is one of the best places to travel in July for one major reason: wildflowers . While you might consider spring to be the best time to see colorful flowers, the park’s northern location in Montana means the blooms reach their peak in July and August. Hike along the Garden Wall Trail to see fields of white beargrass, pink fireweed, and yellow glacier lilies as far as the eye can see.

When you’ve had your fill of hiking (and your phone is full of photos), head back to The Resort at Paws Up , a sprawling, 37,000-acre working cattle ranch in western Montana. Their safari-style canvas tents will make you feel like you’re in the Wild West, while locally sourced meals and spa treatments are worthy of a five-star hotel.

Mamula Island

It’s not easy to find an uncrowded beach in Europe during the summer months, but the country of Montenegro is one of your best bets. It takes up less space than Connecticut and has a lower population than Stockholm , but the tiny Balkan nation should not be overlooked—especially since it’s quieter and more untouched than neighboring Croatia and Greece. Beyond the beaches, you can take advantage of the country’s historic Old Towns, UNESCO-protected parks, and lakes begging for a swim.

The country also happens to be home to Mamula Island Hotel , a former 19th-century fortress that was reimagined and unveiled in April 2023. Situated on its eponymous island in Boka Bay, this knockout property features sea-facing rooms, three dining venues, and a beautiful glass-covered internal courtyard. Try to book one of the contemporary panoramic suites in the crown of the main tower, complete with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and terraces equipped with telescopes for stargazing.

Pantanal

The Pantanal

Stretching across parts of southeastern Brazil , Paraguay, and Bolivia , the Pantanal is the world’s largest floodplain and boasts the highest concentration of wildlife on the entire South American continent (yes, even more than the Amazon). Here you can spot ultra-rare jaguars, crocodiles, monkeys, anacondas, and some 650 species of birds; and the dry season from July to October boasts the best visibility.

Note that reaching the Pantanal takes a bit of work: You must first fly to São Paulo (a great excuse to stay overnight at the São Paulo Rosewood ), then fly to the Campo Grande Airport in Mato Grosso, then either drive or take a chartered flight to your lodge. And that lodge should definitely be the upscale Caiman Ecological Reserve , a 204-square-mile refuge known for its luxury villas and local conservation efforts. Between visiting jaguar sanctuaries and horseback riding through the jungle, rest up at the reserve’s hammock garden, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy the starry sky from your private balcony.

Bonaire

Only 50 miles from Venezuela, Bonaire is the farthest east of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao). Since it sits outside the Hurricane Belt—and since its relatively remote location means its never as crowded as other Caribbean islands—there’s not really a bad time to visit; but July is one of the best months to spot animals both above and below sea level. The Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary on the southern end of the island is home to more than 10,000 flamingos (July marks the tail end of breeding season), which you can spot from the road or nearby Pink Beach.

But the most beautiful parts of Bonaire can be found just below the surrounding waters. The entire coral reef around the island is a national park (Bonaire National Marine Park), with brightly colored coral and wildlife ranging from nurse sharks and seahorses to friendly green turtles. There are 85 dive sites within the park and dozens of tour operators on the island, so there’s really no excuse to stay exclusively on dry land.

Oaxaca Mexico

Oaxaca, Mexico

Far from the coastal spring break hot spots of Cancún and Cabo San Lucas, Oaxaca , in south-central Mexico, is one of the most important cultural hubs in the Americas. Explore the region’s craft revolution led by female entrepreneurs, secure a table at Alejandro Ruiz’s Casa Oaxaca for traditional dishes and cocktails, then head to the streets for delicious tlayudas and tacos served from food trucks (our favorites for each: Tlayudas La Chinita, and Lechoncito de Oro, respectively).

An extra special reason to visit in July is the vibrant Guelaguetza Festival, which takes place on the last two Mondays of the month. The festival celebrates the 16 different ethnolinguistic groups of Oaxaca with folk dancing, traditional clothing, mezcal fairs, and concerts.

We named Mongolia one of the best places to travel in 2024 for several reasons chief among them being the countrys...

We named Mongolia one of the best places to travel in 2024 for several reasons, chief among them being the country’s relatively recent accessibility. Last year, Mongolia opened up visa-free travel for an additional 34 nationalities—bringing the total up to 61—in an effort to become a more popular tourist destination. (The campaign is set to run until 2025.) There are also talks of a direct US–Mongolia flight launching later this year.

July is an especially exciting time to visit Mongolia. This time every year, the country throws its annual Naadam Festival (July 11-13), an ancient-style version of the Olympics with horse racing, wrestling, and archery. The event appears on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list for its intrinsic connection to “the nomadic civilization of the Mongols,” and the competitions truly are a sight to behold. You can watch the opening ceremony in Ulaanbaatar’s National Sports Stadium then stick around for the archery and wrestling games; you’ll have to head to the Khui Doloon Khudag field outside of town to watch the horse races.

Tahiti surfing

While people around the world are flocking to Paris this July for the 2024 Olympic Games, we suggest heading to Tahiti for a more tropical—but still sports-oriented—summer vacation. The southern coastal village of Teahupo’o will host the Olympic’s 10-day surf competition this year starting on July 27, and visitors can watch the event on giant screens set up in parks, beaches, and marinas across the island. This leg of the games is particularly exciting this year: It’s only the second time surfing has appeared on the Olympic program (it debuted in Tokyo in 2020), and Teahupo’o’s famous break is often dubbed one of “the deadliest waves in the world.” Surf’s up, indeed.

After all those secondhand adrenaline rushes, you’ll probably want to rest up in an impossibly luxurious resort—something Tahiti has in spades. The InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa has all the makings of a classic French Polynesian property, from thatched-roof overwater bungalows to holistic spa treatments. But if you have some extra time, consider hopping on a 20-minute flight north to Tetiaroa, home to The Brando . This ultra-remote, ultra-polished resort plops guests down on a private atoll surrounded by white sand and shallow, turquoise water. It’s just you and nature—with a spa, multi-course dining experience, and villa with a private plunge pool thrown in.

If you’ve spent any time in Chicago , you probably aren’t surprised that our readers consistently vote it the best large city in the United States . And if you haven’t spent time here? We suggest booking a trip to the Windy City stat. There are tons of summer activities for both first-time and seasoned travelers, including visiting the beaches along Lake Michigan, taking Chicago River boat tours, watching the fireworks at Navy Pier, and attending festivals like the Southport Art Fest (July 6 to 7) and Pitchfork Music Festival (July 19 to 21).

There’s no shortage of great hotels in the city , but do yourself a favor and book a few nights at The Peninsula Chicago , consistently voted one of the best properties in town by both our readers and editors. There are many reasons why this decades-old hotel has continued to impress, from that iconic 19th-floor spa to those epic marble bathrooms. We also have our eyes on citizenM Chicago Downtown —the hotel opened in late 2022, and its high-tech features and colorful, offbeat decor still feel delightfully fresh.

Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll

There really is no wrong time to visit Iceland, but we’re particularly fond of chasing the midnight sun during July—the more daylight hours for exploring, the better. The summer months also make certain parts of the country accessible that might not be in the winter, including the 34-mile Laugavegurinn hiking trail in the Central Highlands. The mountain huts and campsites along the trail are only open between late June and early September, giving you a small time window to experience the hot springs, black lava fields, and multicolored mountains along the path.

If the term “mountain hut” makes you cringe a little, fear not: Iceland has some luxury stays that might be more up your alley. The Reykjavik Edition opened in the nation’s capital a couple of years ago, featuring custom furniture, local treats in the minibars, and incredible city and harbor views. Making a splash further off the grid is Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll , a remote property with tons of accommodation options (hotel rooms, A-frame huts, campsites) and summer activities ranging from guided hikes to hot spring soaks.

Annual Hemingway Days festival

Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West for the entirety of the 1930s, and the tiny island has been honoring him ever since—most notably with the Hemingway Days celebration held every July (this year’s dates are July 16-21). This annual event is piling on extra festivities this year, which marks the author’s 125th birthday anniversary. You can expect prose and poetry readings, a three-day marlin fishing tournament, and special museum exhibits, as well as the festival’s showstopping Hemingway Look-Alike Contest. Because what’s better than one Ernest Hemingway? Answer: 140 Ernest Hemingways.

Even if your trip doesn’t overlap with the exact Hemingway Days dates, you can still glimpse a piece of the author’s life at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. Take guided tours of the house where For Whom the Bell Tolls was penned, then stroll through the surrounding gardens and try to spot the famous six-toe cats who roam the property. In terms of accommodations, you have many excellent hotels to choose from (our readers love The Marker )—or opt for something a little cheekier and book a room at the adults-only, clothing-optional Island House Key West Resort .

North Island Okavango

June–August marks the dry winter season in Botswana , which many consider to be the perfect time to visit. Not only are weather conditions at their best (no rain, lower risk of malaria), but these months offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities as animals tend to stick around watering holes. The country also happens to be one of our favorite safari spots in Africa. While you’re sure to spot wildlife in Kenya’s Maasai Mara or in South Africa’s Kruger, you’ll also be in the company of a couple dozen other jeeps filled with tourists; in Botswana, it feels like it’s only you and nature.

This year is a particularly exciting time to visit, because you’ll get the chance to be one of the earliest guests at North Island Okavango . This intimate micro-camp (and 2024 Hot List winner) occupies its own floating patch of land in the Okavango Delta, which means you have 24/7 lagoon views of hippos, elephants, and other wildlife. Suites with wraparound decks and walkways leading directly out onto the water let you get even closer to the action.

I paid $1,700 to visit Iceland. Horrible weather meant I couldn't see the Northern Lights, but I found 5 other ways to have a good time.

  • I traveled from Baltimore to Iceland to see the Northern Lights.
  • I spent about $1,700 on flights, hotels, and activities like whale-watching and snorkeling.
  • I didn't see the Northern Lights, but I had a great time and would return to Iceland in a heartbeat.

Insider Today

Seeing the Northern Lights in person has always been on my bucket list. So, when I learned that 2024 is one of the best years to see them , I knew I had to take a trip to Iceland as soon as possible.

I booked a Northern Lights tour through Gray Line Iceland and paid $66 for a ticket that was valid for several days. But unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the scheduled tours were canceled each day I was in Iceland.

Although I was disappointed after spending $1,700 on hotels, flights, a rental car, and activities, I was still able to have a great time.

Here are five activities that made my trip to Iceland worth it.

My first stop was the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa.

My first stop was the Blue Lagoon , a famous geothermal spa with temperatures ranging from 98 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Getting in a bathing suit and swimming in freezing weather might sound horrible, but the water was quite comfortable. I paid about $95 for this experience.

I took a virtual tour of the country through FlyOver Iceland.

My next stop was FlyOver Iceland, an attraction I learned about through an advertisement I saw at the airport. The $42 experience started with lectures and videos about the history of Iceland, mythology, and the land.

Next, we were led to a theater full of chairs with handlebars along the side, similar to the seats on a roller coaster. When everyone was seated, the chairs lifted, suspending each person in the air.

A screen at the front of the room displayed vivid videos of Iceland's beautiful natural landmarks . The seats moved as we watched the videos, and wind and scents to match the projected scenes blew around the theater. Mist hit my face as I saw videos of waterfalls, making it seem like we really were flying over Iceland.

This was a great alternative to physically seeing parts of the country I couldn't drive to because of the inclement weather.

The next day, I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to go whale-watching.

While in Iceland, I wanted to find an excursion that didn't require me to get on the road, so I spent about $120 to go whale-watching . I booked the last-minute adventure at a brick-and-mortar Gray Line Iceland location in downtown Reykjavík.

The mountain views , beautiful ocean, and the whales putting on a show were amazing. The boat had plenty of space, and the staff served coffee and hot chocolate.

After I got off the boat, I headed to the Geysir hot-spring area.

The weather lightened up during the three-hour whale-watching expedition, so I made the spur-of-the-moment decision to drive to the Geysir hot-spring area. The geothermal area was free to the public and featured geysers that could shoot water over 100 feet in the air .

Most geysers I encountered were inactive, but I saw a fountain-like hot spring, Strokkur, erupt twice.

Next, I headed to Thingvellir National Park for a snorkeling adventure.

Though it was freezing, I was excited to go snorkeling between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. I paid $150 to go snorkeling and $30 for a diver to snap photos with a company called Dive.IS .

Once I got in my wetsuit, which was surprisingly warm, the instructor taught me about how the tectonic plates shifted. Then, we set out on the 30-minute snorkeling journey.

The buoyancy of the wetsuit made it easy to stay afloat, and I fully enjoyed the clear, refreshing water.

Even though I didn't see the Northern Lights, the trip was worth the money.

Overall, I still think the $1,700 I paid to travel to and explore Iceland was well spent.

Due to the snowy, cloudy weather, I never went on the Northern Lights tour I'd booked. Though my heart was set on seeing the streaks of blue, green, and purple flash across the sky, my stay showed me plenty of things to see and do in Iceland.

I got out of my comfort zone by whale-watching and snorkeling and had an amazing time learning about the country's rich history.

Gray Line Iceland, the company I booked the $66 Northern Lights tour through, offered customers who didn't see the lights the option of getting a refund or a ticket to use in the future. I opted for the ticket.

I'll definitely return to Iceland to try to see the lights again soon.
