Regent’s Seven Seas Society cruise loyalty program: The ultimate guide

Gene Sloan

Among luxury cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises has one of the most robust loyalty programs.

Despite being a relatively small brand with just five ships, it offers an impressive seven tiers of loyalty status as part of what it calls the Seven Seas Society. Each of the tiers brings a number of perks, some quite valuable.

As you start to rise through the Seven Seas Society tiers, you'll find yourself rewarded with everything from onboard spending credits and free onboard Wi-Fi service to — at the highest levels — discounts of 5% to 10% on every cruise you book.

Those benefits work out to be real money in your pocket, as they will lower the cost of your cruise vacation.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The robustness of Regent's program is all the more impressive, given that the line is one of the most all-inclusive in the world. Regent includes a lot of benefits in its fares — such as drinks and shore excursions — that other lines give away only as loyalty perks to their best customers.

That leaves Regent with fewer perks to offer in its loyalty program. Still, it has come up with some creative ways to reward its most loyal fans, including several that will make a big impact on their wallets.

Ways to earn points

The points-earning system for the Seven Seas Society program is about as simple as can be: You will earn 1 point for every night you stay on a Regent ship.

That's it. There are no bonus points for staying in a top suite, as there are at some lines. Nor will you get extra points for spending certain amounts of money with the line, as is sometimes the case.

The only exception to the above is for solo cruisers who pay a "single supplement" of 75% or more to stay in a cabin designed for two. They get 2 points for every night they stay on a ship.

For the most part, though, if you take a 10-night cruise with Regent, you will get 10 points (which the line calls "nights"). Take a 20-night cruise, and you will get 20 points.

Related: 5 secrets to getting a luxury cruise for less

Note that in most cases, your points will accrue upon completion of the cruise on which they are earned. In the case of Regent's longer Grand Voyages and World Cruises, you'll see your points pop into your account at the end of each official segment of the trip. (You can access your account and more information about Regent's loyalty program at the Regent website ).

Either way, though, if the number of nights you are sailing during a cruise will elevate you to the next tier of rewards, you will enjoy instant recognition at the higher tier from the moment you board — a great feature of the program in our eyes.

One notable caveat to points earning in the program: You only will get credit for nights where you actually are present on a Regent ship. If you have to leave a cruise early, you won't earn points for the nights you are not on board. You also won't earn points for any nights spent in hotels as part of Regent's pre- and post-cruise hotel and land programs.

Seven Seas Society tiers and benefits

There are seven tiers in the Seven Seas Society program:

  • Bronze (7-20 nights)
  • Silver (21-74 nights)
  • Gold (75-199 nights)
  • Platinum (200-399 nights)
  • Titanium (400-999 nights)
  • Diamond (1,000-1,999 nights)
  • Commodore (2,000-plus nights)

Regent only offers cruises of seven nights or longer, so you'll be at the first tier of the program, Bronze, after a single sailing. If you book one of Regent's longer sailings as your first cruise with the line, you might even catapult into the second or third tier of the program after just one sailing.

Related: A beginners guide to cruise line loyalty programs

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the entry-level tier (Bronze) doesn't bring all that much in terms of truly valuable rewards. The most alluring benefit at this level is the exclusive Seven Seas Society savings that are available on some departures.

In addition, Bronze members get:

  • Access to an online personal profile
  • An invitation to an onboard Seven Seas Society cocktail reception
  • Double loyalty points when paying extra to sail solo

The double loyalty points for sailing solo only apply when paying a "single supplement" of at least 75% of the regular cruise fare for a cabin designed for two people.

Upon reaching the second tier of the program, Silver, things start getting more interesting. In addition to the Bronze-level rewards, you'll get priority access when making dinner reservations for the three main specialty restaurants on Regent ships: Prime 7, Chartreuse and Pacific Rim. This is a great perk as it'll give you a better shot at getting the dinner times you want at these eateries.

The Silver level also will get you the following:

  • Priority online shore excursion reservations
  • One hour of complimentary phone time every time you sail
  • A commemorative pin
  • A newsletter

At the next level up (Gold), the perks include all of the above plus a $100 shipboard credit per suite every time you sail. We love that perk, as it amounts to real money in your pocket. Plus, you'll get:

  • Unlimited Wi-Fi for free with four logins for up to four devices
  • Two more hours of free phone time (for three hours in total)
  • Priority disembarkation at voyage completion in select ports
  • Choice of newspaper service from papers around the world
  • Exclusive activities on board or ashore on every voyage

The Platinum level brings six more hours of phone time and complimentary luggage tags, two perks that don't get us all that excited. The latter perk, in particular, is something that seems better in an entry-level tier (though to be fair, these luggage tags are made from quality leather).

But the Platinum level also adds the use of free custom air service once per sailing, which can come in handy. It lets you call a Regent concierge who will help customize your included-in-the-fare flights, so they work best for your schedule. Otherwise, you're stuck with the flights that Regent picks for you or have to pay an extra charge to change them.

Related: Look inside Regent's swankiest ship ever

The Platinum level also brings a 10% discount on Regent Choice shore excursions (the line's collection of niche or intimate extra-fee tours), hotel and land programs. This one perk alone could end up saving you hundreds of dollars.

regent travel club

As noted above, you'll be at the Bronze tier after just one sailing with Regent. Reaching the Silver tier could take as many as three cruises if you stick to seven-night sailings. But you also could reach it in just one longer cruise.

The number of cruises it'll take you to reach the Gold and Platinum tiers will depend on whether you do short or long sailings. If you stick to seven-night sailings, you'd have to take a whopping 29 cruises to reach the Platinum tier. But there are super long Regent cruises, such as a 168-night world cruise planned for 2025, that will get you almost all the way to Platinum level with a single voyage.

The elite level that makes a difference

We like quite a few of the perks available at the Bronze through Platinum levels of the Seven Seas Society program. But it is at the Titanium level that things really start to impress us.

Specifically, the Titanium level comes with four really nice perks:

  • Free private transfers between your home or the airport and the ship, within a 100-mile radius, on embarkation and disembarkation day
  • Free unlimited dry cleaning
  • An additional 15% discount on Regent Choice shore excursions, hotels and land programs (for 25% total savings)
  • Access to your suite at 1 p.m. on embarkation day

We absolutely love the private-transfer perk, which lets you start and end your trips in style. There's nothing like having a private car pick you up at home at the start of the trip or a chauffeur waiting for you upon arrival at the airport. We also love the free unlimited dry cleaning perk. The discounts on shore excursions, hotels and land programs at this level can save you big money — more than $1,000 when booking some add-on land programs.

Related: The best credit cards for booking cruises

Getting to the Titanium level in the Seven Seas Society takes a whole lot of cruising. At a minimum, you'd need to spend the equivalent of more than a year at sea to hit the 400-night threshold for the tier. You could do that by sailing 58 seven-night cruises, 29 two-week cruises or three world cruises (the latter typically lasting around 150 to 170 days).

Best Seven Seas Society elite perk

Regent's Seven Seas Society program doesn't include a truly over-the-top perk, like the free cruises that rival Silversea Cruises gives out to members who hit certain milestones. But we do appreciate the 5% and 10% discounts on cruise fares that the line offers to members who reach the Diamond and Commodore tiers, respectively. That can be worth thousands of dollars when booking some sailings. Note that these discounts are available on any sailing you book, not just select Seven Seas Society sailings (for which, as mentioned above, you can get discounts upon reaching the Bronze tier of the program).

Diamond-level members also get one free Regent Choice shore excursion per voyage segment, up to $250 in value, as well as an invitation to new ship christenings (something that doesn't happen all that often, alas).

The Commodore level adds two more perks that, while not worth a huge amount monetarily, are about as cool as it gets in the world of loyalty programs:

  • A commemorative Commodore officers jacket
  • A commemorative plaque in your name placed on all ships in the Regent fleet

The cutoffs for the Diamond and Commodore tiers are 1,000 nights and 2,000 nights at sea, respectively — levels that only the most dedicated cruisers can reach. But with years of heavy sailings, the feat is doable.

Related: Regent unveils epic, monthslong world cruise

Note that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Regent customers do not have to requalify for status each year. Seven Seas Society members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means that someone who hits Commodore status (and gets that cool jacket) will remain at that top-tier level forever (or until Regent makes a change to the program).

Such "forever status" is one of the great allures of cruise line loyalty programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require members to requalify for status each year.

Bottom line

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has a robust frequent cruiser program with some great perks at its higher tiers. While it doesn't offer a single perk that is truly knock-your-socks-off, such as the free cruises that a few lines give to customers who reach high levels of status, it brings significant discounts and value-added perks that begin at mid-tier levels.

This is all the more impressive given that Regent is one of the most all-inclusive lines in cruising. Regent includes so many things in its fares — such as drinks, unlimited Wi-Fi and shore excursions — that it leaves very little available to offer to loyal customers as an upgrade other than straight-out discounts on trips. But the line has found other ways to add value — from free concierge service when arranging flights to a commemorative Commodore jacket.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises, voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite midsize-ship ocean cruise lines in our 2023 World's Best Awards , is well-known for incredible service and an all-inclusive rate that includes everything from business-class flights to unlimited shore excursions. The luxury cruise line's sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur, set sail for its inaugural season at the end of 2024. The ship was named one of T+L's best places to travel in 2024 , and I was on board the ship’s three-night christening sailing for a first look inside the stunning new vessel.

It was clear from the moment my mom and I stepped on board that one of the ship’s greatest luxuries — beyond fine dining, a multimillion-dollar art collection, and gorgeous common areas — is space. With a maximum of 746 guests per sailing, Grandeur is a far cry from mega-ships where pool crowds and buffet lines are the norm. With spacious all-suite, all-balcony accommodations and intimate specialty restaurants, the ship felt lively but never crowded. Designed by Studio DADO, the ship's dazzling common areas are decorated with a 1,600-piece art collection including multiple Picassos and the first-ever Fabergé Egg to be permanently installed at sea. (Sarah Fabergé, founding member of The Fabergé Heritage Council and great-granddaughter of Peter Carl Fabergé, is the ship’s godmother.)

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

  • All-suite, all-balcony accommodations provide thoughtful touches and ample space to spread out.
  • Seven dining venues — including signature restaurant Compass Rose, Asian-inspired Pacific Rim, and more — offer 130 new dishes, including many plant-based options.
  • A 1,600-piece art collection includes “Journey in Jewels,” the first Fabergé Egg to permanently reside on a cruise ship.
  • Regent is an all-inclusive cruise line, so everything from flights and unlimited shore excursions to alcoholic beverages, valet laundry service, and dining at specialty restaurants are included in the rate.

While cruises are often about the ports of call, the Seven Seas Grandeur — sibling ship to RSSC's Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor , is a destination in itself. In fact, although my mom and I were tempted by the unlimited included shore excursions at our port in the Bahamas, we opted to stay on board to experience every amenity the ship had to offer.

Here, my review of the Regent Seven Seas Grandeur .

On Grandeur , 373 guest accommodations range from the entry-level Veranda Suites to the one-of-a-kind, 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite. Deluxe Veranda and Veranda Suites offer up to 361 square feet of space, outfitted with upscale finishes and, of course, their own balconies. I stayed in a Concierge Suite, of which there are 140 on board. With a super-comfortable Elite Slumber bed facing the balcony, a very spacious walk-in closet, and a bathroom with two sinks, a shower, and a separate tub, this suite offered plenty of storage and lots of room to spread out.

Besides the bright and open design in ocean-inspired hues of blue and cream, I loved the attention to detail in my suite, down to the field glasses sitting in the cabinet, ready to help you spot wildlife or faraway islands. The two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath Regent Suite, priced at $11,000 per night, offers spectacular amenities including its own hot tub, unlimited spa services offered in-suite, and private dining in a room hidden between two of the ship’s specialty restaurants.

There are seven unique dining venues and several bars located throughout the ship, and specialty restaurants are included in the rate. Over 130 new dishes were added to the menus on Grandeur , and there are more than 200 plant-based options served across the ship for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Compass Rose, Regent’s signature restaurant, received a gorgeous transformation by Studio DADO for Grandeur ; behind a metal waterfall-like sculpture, guests will find an illuminated dining room that resembles a magical forest.

Prime 7 is the ship’s steakhouse, redesigned with influences from New York City’s classic 20th-century steakhouses. Chartreuse celebrates classic French cooking and glamour with a dining room inspired by the Parisian metro’s art nouveau stations and Coco Chanel’s designs. The entrance to Pacific Rim, a pan-Asian specialty restaurant serving sushi, dim sum, and more, is marked by an impressive bonsai cherry tree sculpture by Savoy Studios.

La Veranda is the ship’s main buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch; during our sailing, we enjoyed sushi, lobster, paella, salads, and a very delicious cronut during casual meals here. In the evening, La Veranda becomes Sette Mari at La Veranda, a table-service restaurant serving Italian food. If you want a classic cheeseburger, lobster nachos, or a Korean fried chicken sandwich — or even just a milkshake by the pool — the Pool Grill has you covered with relaxed al fresco eats. And the baristas at Coffee Connection are ready to make your espresso drinks just the way you like them. On our third day, the barista actually had my mom’s coffee ready as soon as she sat down — she didn’t even have to order, he just remembered how she liked it.

Of course, if you’d rather take your meals in your beautiful suite, you can also enjoy included room service 24 hours a day.

There are several bars and lounges on board, too: The Meridian Lounge, where you’ll find daily afternoon tea service (a personal favorite) and live entertainment in the evenings; the lively Grandeur Lounge located across from the casino; and the Observation Lounge, with incredible ocean views during the day and live piano at night.

Where Regent Seven Seas Grandeur Sails

Regent Seven Seas Grandeur will spend its nearly sold-out 2024 sailing the Caribbean, Central America, North America, and Europe; itineraries range from seven to 16 nights. This summer, a seven-night Mediterranean Sea cruise will visit ports in Italy, Malta, and Spain, for example.  Later in the season, a 10-night roundtrip cruise from Miami will include stops in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, St. Barts, Antigua, and the British Virgin Islands.

Regent includes unlimited shore excursions on every sailing so guests can take full advantage of what each port has to offer. On our cruise to Freeport, Bahamas, excursions included swimming with the pigs at a local beach, relaxing at a nearby resort, snorkeling, touring Grand Bahama Island on a Jeep safari, and more. You can find a list of shore excursions on the Regent website for each port before booking, and you can book them online starting at 365 days before your cruise if you booked a suite with concierge amenities or 300 days in advance without concierge benefits. While there are typically several free options for every port, Regent Choice Shore Excursions are also available for an additional charge.

Amenities and Entertainment

With a turquoise pool surrounded by dozens of sun loungers, several hot tubs, outdoor sports courts, and a host of daily activities ranging from trivia to live entertainment, there’s plenty to do on board the Regent Seven Seas Grandeur . Starting at the top on Deck 12, a bocce court, pickleball court, shuffleboard, a golf net, and a putting green with holes inspired by famous golf courses around the world offer fun ways to soak in the ocean views on a sea day. The Observation Lounge, Card Room, Connoisseur Club, and Library (with countless travel books stocked so you can read all about your next destination) on Deck 11 are cozy spots to unwind.

The Culinary Arts Kitchen — Regent’s cooking school at sea — is a gorgeous space where guests can learn how to make dishes inspired by the places they’re sailing to — without having to do any of the prep work or clean up. I took a class and learned how to make pasta al limone and crepes; I loved the hands-on instruction and picked up a few helpful tips to use when I cook at home.

The Serene Spa and Wellness section of the ship on Decks 5 and 6 includes a number of treatment rooms (including one with an amber and quartz bed), a gym with workout classes and fitness consultations, and a hydrothermal suite with a sauna, steam room, chill room, and experiential showers. There’s also an outdoor relaxation area with three whirlpools looking back over water; this was one of my favorite places to spend time admiring the ocean during our three-night cruise.

Split between Decks 4 and 5 is the Constellation Theater, the main entertainment venue where guests can watch four Broadway-style shows. I was thoroughly entertained by the "Marauder’s Ball," a pirate adventure told through pop songs and classic swashbuckling tunes. Also on Deck 4, guests can shop around the boutiques, play slots or table games at the glitzy casino, or hang out in the Grandeur Lounge.

Guests can also learn about some of the works in the ship’s 1,600-piece art collection through a digital art tour offered through the Regent app.

Family-friendly Offerings

While not strictly an adults-only cruise line, Regent cruises are best for adults traveling without small children. The Club Mariner children’s program (for ages 5-17) is available on select sailings, but with many adult-focused spaces and entertainment, this ship is better suited for travelers without little ones. Under-16s are not allowed in the spa or fitness center.

There are a couple of handicap-accessible suites available on Grandeur featuring roll-in showers and other accessible features. There are elevators and ramps located throughout the common areas on the ship; I saw several guests navigating the ship using various mobility devices during my voyage.

St Petersburg to Moscow

Cool Cruiser

I checked the ports section to see if there was any information in reference to going from St. Petersburg to Moscow, but there was nothing there. We are on the August 24 N. Europe sailing on Voyager and have booked the train trip to Moscow. Have any of you taken this trip and was it totally exhausting?

I did research on the train and noticed there are various categories of seats, similar to an airline with first class/ business class, etc. Was wondering what level Regent book's their customers in.

Another question, this is our first cruise on Regent and was wondering about the air. We booked a PH so business air is included, but I noticed quite a bit of posting about deviation. How do you know what you have been scheduled for by Regent or do you just check airlines and then notify Regent what you would like and they charge the extra fees?

thank you for any assistance you provide. I am so happy for CC and being able to get all the great info I do here. I don't post much but I sure do read a lot.:)

Just read a wonderful review on the Crystal board (with pictures) that will definitely inspire you to do the Moscow trip. I'm so sorry that we didn't do it!

In regards to your flights, you will get them approx. 75 days prior to your departure which is much too late to usually be able to do anything about changing them to better flights. Many people choose to arrive several days early and depart for home several days after their cruise and to do this you must deviate. You are taking your chances on your routing by waiting for the Regent Flights.

Regent starts taking deviations 270 days prior to your departure and knowledgeable people immediately at that time make their deviation to get their preferred flights at the lowest, if charged additional add on. You have absolutely nothing at risk if you ask for your deviation as the $175 is not charged until you agree on the flights and any possible upcharges. You can go back and forth with offers and responses until you get the flights you like or simply stop the process at any time at no cost to you and wait for the included air. Traveling overseas increases the risk of delays in flights plus it is overnight to Europe so jet lag can be an issue as well as arrival on the morning or afternoon of embarkation runs the risk of "missing the boat".

Highly recommend asking about deviations and see what you get and how much you might have to pay, if anything and then make up your mind. The included flights without deviation may not be the most direct and can involve long connection times. Only you can decide the best approach for you.

Travelcat2

We have been assigned some great flights 75 days prior to our cruise date. We also deviate if there is a certain flight with a certain airline that we want. Actually, there is a bit of a risk if you pay the $175/person and deviate. We have had flight changes that do not work for us and Regent could impose an additional fee. Also, there is an up-charge for certain flights.

Suggest that you read post #65 on this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1832227&page=4 which explains deviation in more detail.

In terms of St. Petersburg to Moscow, while we have not done that excursion we have been to St. Petersburg twice with Regent and the days are exhausting without going to Moscow. This is a wonderful but very port intensive itinerary. Also, St. Petersburg has so many incredible things to see that you may want to do excursions there. However, if you are full of energy and really want to visit Moscow, I'd say go for it:)

RALLY DAVE,

thank you so much for your response, we'll go ahead and do the deviation as we really prefer non stop to London and know we will have to do a connection from Stockholm. We will be in London before the cruise and have extended our return trip home from Stockholm to wander about there as well.

thank you Memlin, i'll go and take a look at the Crystal posting!

great information off your link about deviation......will check around and if something is too good to pass up then will try for the deviation. We have been to Europe multiple times and normally had direct flights, but one never knows.

We are fortunate that we often drive to one of the gateway airports since we have friends all over the east coast. Often drive to Miami, Atlanta, for this trip we are leaving from Orlando, staying with friends before the flight.

again, thank you so very much for your info!

I know my wife and I passed on the Moscow by air excursion a few years ago and we're still kind of torn about it. On the one hand, I really wanted to see Moscow (still do) but on the other hand, it was a brutal schedule. There was so much to see and do in St Petersburg though, so it wasn't critical to see Moscow on that trip...but next time we're there, I'm definitely going to check it out.

Not sure how long the train ride is down there, nor how the Russian trains are but if they're anything like the trains I've taken in Europe, there's not a huge difference in the classes of service. Usually the same amount of space, just nicer amenities in First Class. And probably fewer 'interesting' people, I'd imagine.

UUnet Bill,

I know the trip is 4 hours each way. I reviewed the post on Crystal and now feel so much better about booking it. It will be a quite long day, possibly around 18 hours, but memories are made from these type of trips. We were so excited to see the optional trip to Moscow and decided we can sleep on the way there and on the way back to the ship, but to be this close we just knew we wanted to do it. We were interested in the air tour, but it was not available for our cruise, so the train it shall be.

The train appears to be similar to the bullet train in Japan. I found it so unusual that I was unable to find any posts about this tour..... and then Memlin posted about the tour a cruiser posted on the Crystal section and it was fabulous.

I believe that the more upgraded cars of the train have the larger more comfortable seats. After all, just as an airplane takes all its passengers to the same location so will this train. Just was hoping to not be squeezed in one of those little middle seats for our tour.

Many, many, oh so many years ago on one of our first trips to Europe, we were in the middle of the middle of the economy seats to Holland. Oh, my goodness, I had to use the restroom during the flight.......Yes, I know you are all smiling or laughing, but really, it can become a pressing problem! and you have to excuse yourself to 2 other persons regardless of which way you choose to leave this section.

As one gets older, comfort becomes so much more important, doesn't it? When we first were able to move to business class, I thought we moved to heaven! When we were able to always book at least a suite on a cruise ship I thought we are the most blessed persons in the world.

My goodness, how did I ever get on this soapbox.

happy travels to all

My husband and I did the Moscow excursion and we are soooo glad we did. We did it last year in August and it is wonderful. Do not miss this. Well worth the money. It was a long day but well worth it. The seats on the train are okay.

The day we went the weather was great.

We did the Moscow excursion by Air with Regent. Great trip and we are very glad we did it. It was probably the only chance we would have to see Moscow and it was spectacular.

Well, I know it's a year-old post but I came across it while searching for 'Moscow' in the forum...we're back in St. Petersburg this August and have decided to do the Moscow trip - sounds like it's going to be well worth the time and expense - if anyone else has any updated info on this excursion, I'd sure love to hear about it!

I did the train to Moscow on the last voyage of the season on the Voyager Sept 25, 2016. Your questions. We left the ship at 4:30 am. Bus to the St Pete train station and left about 7:00am. While the train does have 3 classes, all of the tour was in the economy class. Seats are comparable to airplane economy plus seats. That is to say not that great. You can not upgrade. Our group of 45 were all in one car. The ride is 4 hours each way, with 2 stops along the way. Not much to see along the way, a few small farms and rivers. Left Moscow about 7:30 pm and back to the ship just before midnight. Yes it is a long day and the train ride is not that comfortable. As to why Regent didn't use a better class in the train, I was told that it was the vendor decision. This train is not the same as quality as the "Bullet" or TGV trains in western Europe.

Cost was about $1,300 pp. I was discounted 25 % becasue of my Titanium status.

They take you to the highlights, the Kremlin and its museums, ride on the Moscow subway and Red Square. I am glad I did the trip, but I would not do it again. But I knew that this was going to be a "one and done" trip for me.

You can email me if you have any other questions.

We have been to both St. Petersburg (Regent and Viking) and Moscow (Viking). We loved them both. Our 3 days in Moscow were terrific but not long enough; I can't imagine "seeing" this fascinating city in one day. St. Petersburg is even better than Moscow! We have spent about 10, days there - just about enough. Unless this is absolutely the only way(time) that you will see Moscow, spent your few days in marvelous St. P.

I don't know if this is a 'one-and-done' for us, but if it is, I'd like to at least see Moscow. We've spent 3 days in St P before with two more coming up on this trip. We passed on this trip last time we were in St P so we could spend more time there but we've always somewhat regretted skipping Moscow. I know it's going to be like trying to experience NYC or D.C. In one day - not possible but still cool for the highlights.

I did the train version of the trip on Seabourn. It was very exhausting. First I'd done Catherines palace the night before and due to an accident along the way didn't return until ~0100. The tour left at 0400 that morning and we didn't return until around midnight (then there was the third day of tours...). Seabourn sadly didn't book us into anything special so several hours of no recline seats, no a/c. That train ride was probably the worst part of the trip.

Links to what I saw in St. Petersburg/Moscow (I wasn't overly snap happy in Moscow - also at least at the time no photos in the museuems):

We were in St. Petersburg last summer and took a private tour to Moscow one day. I see on here that someone paid $1300 per person.

We found doing it privately was significantly better for the following reasons

1. We were picked up at 6am for the 7am train. (Not 4:30 am!!)

2. We were escorted to the seats on our train.

3. We were upgraded to business class ( my request)

4. We were met trainside by a private guide in Moscow.

5. It was our group (there were 6 of us) only and we had a 20 passenger coach driving us from site to site.

6. We chose what we wanted to visit and for how long.

7. We were escorted to our seats on the train on the return.

8. The only negative was the fact that the food (supplied free in business class) was pretty close to inedible.

9. When we got back to St Pete we asked for a night tour as we had all slept on the train.

The best part? I recall it was around $500 pp.

Just something to consider

IMO, everything in Russia is better seen on private excursions. Your experience sounds so much better than what others have posted. We have been to St. Petersburg twice - there was so much to see that we have yet to see Moscow (given the time it takes to get there and back, it is unlikely that we will ever see it).

Except:::You can only do this trip on you own as you describe if you private purchase a Russian visa. The visa that the ship gets for the passengers do not allow for independent excursions.

Last time I checked the Russian visas cost was $225.00 and you need to send in your passport. Also the ship is in port for 3days/2 night so you can only do the trip on the 2nd full day. The train schedules are not consistent and what works one day may not the next. I looked into doing this on my own before I went last fall and decided that is was not worth saving (for me) $200 per person.

Can you still fly to Moscow? This would save a lot of time - even though it would cost more $$$.

Johnthesailor

If you are with a licensed guide you do not need a visa. The guide has to be with you the entire time, including on the train and must be sanctioned by the authorities. Doesn't matter if you are going around locally or around Moscow. It might matter if you intended to stay the night but the references here have been to same day tours.

Not true. You need a visa if you are going to use anyone other than a official ship tour.

Yes you can fly, but the train is much faster overall time wise when you add in transfer time, security, pre-boarding, flight, deplaning, transfer to Moscow, you need to figure about 6 hours each way.

Not true. You need a visa if you are going to use anyone other than a official ship tour.   j

J, not sure about that - every thing I've seen so far says as long as you're with a licensed tour company you don't need a visa. Doesn't specify only ships tours, but the 72-hour visa exemption is only for cruise passengers. Visas are only required if you want to go out on your own.

At least that was my understanding.

A lot of what everyone is saying is true but, there are some missing nuances. Yes, everyone going ashore in Russia needs a visa. The ship get a blanket visa covering everyone going on ships tours and everyone has to remain with the tour. For those taking independent tours, the major tour companies are able to get you a Visa that again allows you on tours where again you have to stay with the tour. Therefore, if you want to do an indepent tour to Moscow you have to go with a tour company that will get your the required visa.as long as the tour company gets it for you. Now the tricky part. From reading it appears that some tour companies don't have the guide accompanying you on the train or plane and for that you would need a visa you get yourself. So, appears if you want to do an independent tour to Moscow, you have to use a tour company that will get you the required visa and have guides that are with your the entire day. Cannot drop you at the train station and then get another guide upon arrival in Moscow. Of course that is an assumption and perhaps the tour company is allowed to put you on the train or plane and then pick you up upon arrival. Best to ask the requirements from the tour companies organizing the one day tours to Moscow.

There are easy tours to Moscow - less $$$ than with Regent. Check out this site: https://www.viator.com/tours/St-Petersburg/St-Petersburg-Shore-Excursion-Private-Moscow-Day-Trip-Including-Flight-and-Train/d908-6225PRTSPBMOSPRIV . Viator is a personal favorite of ours. You fly one way and take a train back.

Here is another option: http://www.guide-guru.com/destinations/petersburg-cruise-tours/1-day-moscow-cruise/air/ Neither of these options require a visa!

Alternatively, you can get your own visa and do it on your own. IMO, using a tour company is the easiest way to go:)

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Regent and monte announce $300 million seaglider partnership to advance sustainable maritime travel.

New strategic collaboration to provide financing solutions for seagliders

REGENT and MONTE announce strategic partnership

North Kingstown, RI, May 06, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

REGENT and MONTE announce a $300 million deal that will provide financing solutions for seagliders.

REGENT, which makes all-electric seagliders, is the first OEM partner for MONTE Maritime, a sustainable maritime financing company for decarbonized vessels.

MONTE will offer REGENT’s customers operating and finance leases for seagliders, along with infrastructure financing to facilitate seaglider operations.

Learn more about the REGENT seagliders here and MONTE Maritime here .

REGENT , the manufacturer of all-electric seagliders for sustainable maritime mobility, and  MONTE , a maritime and aviation lessor, announced a new strategic partnership at CoMotion Miami today to increase the accessibility of sustainable maritime travel.

Under the agreement, MONTE will purchase up to $300 million of REGENT’s new high-speed, zero-emissions coastal vessels and provide leasing and financing options of the 12-passenger Viceroy and 100-passenger Monarch seagliders to customers.

REGENT represents the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of MONTE Maritime , a sustainable maritime lessor focused on financing decarbonized vessels. The agreement also signifies a significant commitment in the growing industry for leasing and financing electric vessels, offering a model for future collaborations in this space.

“With over 600 seagliders sold and our order book continuing to grow, more of our customers are asking for access to affordable operational lease and finance lease facilities,” said Adam Triolo, VP, Commercial Business Development, REGENT. “Partnering with MONTE allows us to offer our clients decades of finance experience to provide comprehensive financing solutions. We look forward to working with MONTE to advance our shared vision of decarbonizing maritime travel.”

Complete solution for operators

MONTE also plans to finance and lease the required infrastructure needed for operating seagliders, including charging networks, battery storage, and any required port infrastructure upgrades.

“We will provide a full turn-key solution, through vessel and infrastructure financing, for operators looking for zero-emissions travel,” said Timothy Eyre, Chief Operating Officer, MONTE. “Working together to offer an easy-to-operate, full-package electric transport solution will help to accelerate the much-needed decarbonization of the regional maritime industry.”

Advancing sustainable travel

The maritime sector is responsible for 3% of the world’s CO2 emissions . Adopting zero-emissions vessels in coastal transportation and overcoming hurdles to operation will be critical to the global effort to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The REGENT-MONTE partnership is a promising step forward to achieving these goals and democratizing access to high-speed sustainable coastal travel.

About REGENT

REGENT is pioneering the future of sustainable maritime mobility through the development and manufacturing of all-electric seagliders. Seagliders are a new category of vehicle that combine the speed of an aircraft with the convenience of a boat to deliver an affordable and efficient mode of transportation between coastal destinations. REGENT’s flagship seaglider, Viceroy, is a 12-passenger vehicle that travels at 180mph to service routes up to 180 miles on a single charge. REGENT has already secured more than 600 seaglider orders valued at more than $9 billion from leading airline and ferry operators around the world and has raised more than $90 million from investors including 8090 Industries, Founders Fund, Japan Airlines, and Lockheed Martin. About MONTE

MONTE is a global asset manager led by a management team that has arranged over $25 billion of transportation assets over the last 30 years. MONTE was founded with the sole ambition of financing sustainable regional transportation. MONTE aims to facilitate this transition by providing financing and leasing solutions for zero and low emission regional aircraft and vessels and the associated infrastructure required to operate these assets.
