As expected, Beyoncé has announced a 2023 world tour on Instagram, supporting her multiple-Grammy-nominated 2022 album, “Renaissance.” She also released the dates and cities on her official website.

The timing of the announcement, which comes just days before the Grammy Awards on Sunday, sparks speculation that the singer may perform or at least appear on the show. Beyoncé is the most nominated artist for the awards with nine, all related to “ Renaissance .” Sources tell Variety that her husband Jay-Z will perform with DJ Khaled on the show, most likely their nominated song “God Did.”

Popular on Variety

Beyoncé has said that “Renaissance” is a three-part project, so it’s possible that the next parts could be another album, a long-form video project or even the tour itself.

Beyoncé’s last full tour was the nearly six-month, 49-date “Formation” tour in 2016, which unusually featured no guest appearances until the final show, at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where she brought out Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z.

She did, however, stage an epochal “Homecoming” headlining performance at the 2018 Coachella festival — which was postponed from 2017 due to the birth of her and Jay’s twins — for which she was accompanied by a full marching band in a nod to historically Black colleges and universities. That blockbuster performance was later released as the “Homecoming” album and — via a three-project deal with Netflix that sources tell Variety is worth $60 million — a feature-length documentary. It seems possible that a future “Renaissance” video project could be part of that deal as well.

Here’s Why Beyoncé’s Renaissance Film Is A Testament To Artistry and Live Production – Review

Part concert film and part documentary, this live theatrical experience brings the Renaissance to audiences all around the world for the better.

By Gabriel Saulog

Courtesy of Columbia Records & Parkwood Entertainment

When I was eight years old, one of my first few experiences of a concert came from Beyoncé. My sister and I were given a bootleg copy of The Beyoncé Experience Live , which opened my eyes to the wonder of concerts and live music. As I watched the show in awe, it stood out as a gold standard for live performances to me, even at such an early age. Eventually, as I grew up, I got to witness more concerts and live shows. I had become exposed to a variety of live performances, each with their own unique styles and approaches in translating their music into the live setting. And as stellar as some of these performances were, Beyoncé’s DVD performance (despite its low resolution) always lingered in my mind.

With the release of Renaissance last year, Beyoncé provided the world with an auditory experience unlike any other. The critically acclaimed and award-winning record was an amalgamation of the house, ballroom, dance, and electronic genres, making it a sonic exploration of sounds that still remained true to Beyoncé and her voice. And with the cultural impact of the record, so began the Renaissance World Tour –– which audiences like myself clamored to get a glimpse of, even as we watched shaky clips from shows across the world. Yet, to our luck, Renaissance: A Film was announced, bringing the show to an even bigger audience than before.

In its full glory, Renaissance: A Film is a visual spectacle that highlights Beyonce’s journey throughout this era of her career. Part concert film and part documentary on the process of bringing this tour to life, it’s an unbridled achievement that focuses on her artistry and commitment to putting on a show that isn’t just good, but also great. But even with everything it aims to accomplish, Renaissance: A Film is surprisingly an in-depth and intimate look at one of the biggest cultural icons in the world –– showcasing the efforts of an artist working to perfect her craft, all while juggling the balance of having a personal life amidst all the professionalism.

While those watching the film could easily admire the awe-inspiring live performances of Beyoncé’s string of hits, seeing the creative process of how everything was prepared for the Renaissance World Tour is just as impressive as seeing her perform. Interspersed between some of the show’s performances are segments that honor the efforts of the hardworking crew backstage –– whether it’s those assembling the massive LED panels on stage, the sound engineers working overtime to perfect the show’s audio, the choreographers and dancers perfecting every movement to the rhythm, or the seamstresses who assemble every single crystal on Beyoncé’s varying bodysuits. All this astounding production behind the scenes highlights the importance of every element of putting together a live performance, which works in making the audience not just aware, but appreciative of the everyone else’s contribution to putting a phenomenal show together.

Yet for Beyoncé, balancing the role as creative director, producer, and performer is no easy task. Numerous clips and video logs feature the pop star narrating various snippets of her life, including her childhood, familial relationships, and discussions about her work ethic –– giving us the most unfiltered look at Beyoncé, not just as the artist, but as a person. With her commentary behind some of the momentous points of the show, it adds new layers of context and lore that allow viewers to see her in a new light. And together with this perspective, it allows for an even more personal approach for the Houston native to invite us in celebrating the euphoric and liberating aspects of Renaissance as a transformative ethereal experience.

Beyonce Renaissance World Tour Concert Film

As for the performance itself, Beyoncé continues to prove herself as one of the (if not the) greatest show-women on the planet. Her irresistible charm and self-assured manner of commanding the stage remain as evident as ever, even if she’s enchanting theatergoers with her spellbinding ballads such as “ Dangerously In Love ” or “ Drunk In Love ”, or performing the high-octane, choreography heavy numbers of  “ Energy ”, “ Formation ”, or “ Break My Soul .” Specifically with the latter, the multi-Grammy winner never sacrifices putting some great moves on –– even while recovering from a recent knee surgery, or when belting her voice out in a manner that not many artists could dare to replicate.

Aside from her talent leveled up at full force, the former Destiny’s Child member demonstrates her artistry by utilizing other show-stopping techniques to keep audiences engaged all throughout. Various outfit changes exhibited tastefully by smooth transition cuts are just the tip of the iceberg here, as the show even features an abundance of elements that include a sparkling, diamond-encrusted horse, a giant inflatable Beyoncé in red that talks, a silver tank-like car with a pole on top, or a giant seashell to which the songstress emerges out of (akin to The Birth of Venus by Boticelli) to demonstrate the grand scale of Renaissance’s production. Yet even with how big of a presence such elements take up, it’s Beyoncé’s unparalleled artistry that still remains the focus of the show.

It could easily be said Beyoncé’s rigor, determination, and discipline as an artist is clearly unmatched, but the singer utilizes this experience as a means for imparting wisdom to viewers and artists of the next generation. By all means, it’s a celebration of talent and commitment, but also of the communal experience that her platform aims to give off. Theaters all across the world have erupted into a frenzy, celebrating the film’s release as if it were the live experience that audiences have long sought after to participate in (especially in the post-pandemic landscape).

Beyonce Renaissance World Tour Concert Film

Renaissance: A Film could easily (and still accurately) be described as a large-scale dance party meant to celebrate a freedom of expression and love of all forms for the audience, yet still, it’s so much more than that. At it’s core, it’s a joyous means of honoring the efforts of everyone who contributed to such a magnificent production, along with the culture and artistry that doesn’t originate just from Beyoncé, but for everyone involved who paved the way for this moment to happen. It’s more than a concert film, and it’s more than a documentary –– because as a whole, it’s an astounding odyssey that encapsulates this specific period in time for music.

Now at the age of 24, I could confidently say that the previous gold standard I’ve held live performances to has been changed for the better. Witnessing Beyoncé over the years, I’ve seen that she’s refined her craft to excellence even further –– continuously changing the landscape of live performances as we know it. Without a doubt, it isn’t wise to impose any level of standards for an artist like Beyoncé. As she has proven over time, she’s limitless.

Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé is now showing in cinemas nationwide.

Beyoncé announces Renaissance world tour concert film

A new trailer teases footage from behind the scenes of her stunning sellout spectacle, live performances and time with Jay-Z and their children, including rehearsals with daughter Blue Ivy

Beyoncé has announced a new concert film based on this year’s massive tour for her 2022 album Renaissance .

“When I am performing, I am nothing but free,” the musician, 42, says in the trailer for Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé . “My goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free and no one is judged.”

In a review of the first night in Stockholm in May, Guardian critic Malcolm Jack described the tour as “sheer, unfettered, mildly chaotic indulgence” and said: “By rewiring dance music past in a sensory overload of truly stunning ambition and stamina, Beyoncé is writing some history of her own.” The 57-date run recently concluded in New Orleans.

The trailer teases behind the scenes footage, showing Beyoncé rehearsing with her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, 11, who has been dancing on the tour, as well as interactions with her husband Jay-Z and their twins Rumi and Sir. Sources told Variety that the film would incorporate highlights from the world tour, documentary footage of the album’s recording and the tour’s conception – and the long-awaited music videos for the rumoured accompanying visual album.

As with Taylor Swift ’s upcoming Eras tour movie , the Renaissance film will be distributed direct via the AMC Theatres cinema chain in the US, bypassing traditional distributors. Variety reported that as with Swift’s self-financed film, Beyoncé will receive in excess of 50% of box office grosses.

Beyoncé has previously released a number of concert films, most notably the Netflix documentary Homecoming, which revealed the making of her staggering 2018 Coachella headlining set. It is the latest in a trend of lucrative films by musicians documenting their own careers, from Lewis Capaldi to Billie Eilish .

The Guardian named Renaissance the No 1 album of 2022, with critic Jenessa Williams describing it as “a tribute to the influence and endurance of the Black LGBTQ+ community, made in collaboration with producers and samples whose lived experiences and historical weight bring gravity to the sound”.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour

The singer's record-breaking album is set to make history at this weekend's Grammys.

preview for What to Know About the 2023 Grammys

The superstar dropped the news this Wednesday morning on Instagram. In a post, she shared a photo of herself wearing a bejeweled armor-like bodysuit and silver mirrored cowboy hat while sitting atop a holographic horse.

"RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR 2023," she simply wrote in the caption.

Beyoncé released her seventh studio album on July 29, 2022, after recording it over three years during the COVID-19 pandemic. The singer wrote about the project in an open letter to fans.

"Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world," she shared. "It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration."

With Renaissance , Beyoncé has made Grammys history. For this year's ceremony —which takes place this coming Sunday—the star is nominated for nine awards, bringing her up to a total of 88 nominations to date. In a romantic turn, this ties her for the most-nominated artist in Grammys history with none other than her husband, Jay-Z.

Beyoncé's Renaissance smash "Break My Soul" is nominated for Record of the Year. This is her eighth nomination in the category and makes her the artist with the most ROTY nominations of all time. The track is also up for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and the album is nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album.

Beyoncé Drops Striking New Trailer for the 'Renaissance' Concert Film: 'The Renaissance Is Not Over'

'Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé' arrives in theaters worldwide on Dec. 1

renaissance world tour philippines

BeyHive, it’s time to get in formation.

On Thursday, Beyoncé released the worldwide trailer for her upcoming concert film Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé , several weeks out from its Dec. 1 release date. After dropping a teaser featuring behind-the-scenes footage and a voiceover when she announced the project , the new visual offers fans a preview of some of the live footage in the highly anticipated film.

The clip teasing the theatrical version of the pop superstar’s acclaimed Renaissance World Tour opens to her silhouette before gracing an audience of thousands. “I close my eyes and travel through realms of space and time,” Queen Bey, 42, says in a voice over. “Reality holds no power or control of my state of mind on my voyage to find a source to charge my inner being. Assembly line frequency as I tap my MPC.”

As vulnerable backstage clips — including shots with her 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and husband JAY-Z — are interspersed with shots of her on stage, Beyoncé opens up about her identity and the challenges that she’s faced. She says, “In this world that is very male-dominated, I’ve had to be really tough. To balance motherhood and being on this stage, it just reminds me of who I really am.”

The minute-and-a-half-long teaser then bursts into glimpses of the Grammy winner’s record-breaking stage show, including brief looks at the spectacular wardrobe and choreography while audio of her hit “Break My Soul” plays.

“You are the visual baby. It’s a new birth. I hope you feel liberated or the renaissance is not over,” the “America Has a Problem” singer says as the visual concludes.

In the caption for the trailer, the official synopsis says the concert film “accentuates the journey of RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR, from its inception, to the opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri.”

Kevin Mazur/WireImage for Parkwood

“It is about Beyoncé’s intention, hard work, involvement in every aspect of the production, her creative mind and purpose to create her legacy, and master her craft,” the description continues. “Received with extraordinary acclaim, Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR created a sanctuary for freedom, and shared joy, for more than 2.7 million fans.”

The hitmaker announced Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé after the final stop of her tour in Kansas City, Missouri on Oct. 1 by releasing the first trailer online.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour Wardrobe Is Fashion Diplomacy At Its Finest

By André-Naquian Wheeler

renaissance world tour philippines

At this point, Beyoncé’s  Renaissance  world tour is part concert, part extended exercise in seeing just how many custom looks one pop star can commission and pack. Queen Bey has upended the typical stadium show model and turned it into an ever-changing format full of surprises and new looks.

Nearly every tour stop so far—there are 51 dates on the books in total, as of right now—has featured a new never-been-seen look designed by some of the biggest names in contemporary fashion. Off-White , Balmain, Brandon Blackwood, and on and on. What you may not have noticed, however, is that Bey often honors the country she’s in by wearing a designer who calls that nation home: Jacquemus for Marseille, France (the designer’s hometown); Alexander McQueen,  David Koma , Robert Wun, and Stella McCartney for the singer’s five-night residency in London; custom Fendi in Barcelona that featured designs pulled from Spanish artist Antonio Lopez. It’s the pop star’s version of fashion diplomacy.

Using fashion as a medium to silently signal a connection and appreciation towards a culture or community is nothing new, but it’s more usually the territory of royals (see:  Kate Middleton  and  Meghan Markle ) and political figures ( first lady Jill Biden  being one great example). But then again, Beyoncé, with over 300 million followers on Instagram, is her own kind of head of state. The full-throated amplification of international voices feels even more poignant in a post-COVID landscape. Only a mere few years ago, such a large-scale world tour, bringing together thousands of people, was hard to imagine happening again.

But such is the sartorial savvy of Beyoncé. She has developed a penchant for pulling multiple looks—in varying colorways and shades—for a single tour, often bringing new custom looks in and out for a specific leg of a tour or a marquee performance. But the  Renaissance  world tour takes the idea of constant reinvention, long popular among female pop stars especially, to unprecedented heights. There is a seemingly never-ending stream of shiny, disco-era-inflected looks that build upon  Renaissance ’s ballroom-inspired sonic and visual aesthetic, styled by KJ Moody, Shiona Turini, and Julia Sarr-Jamois. There’s something campy and almost Barbie-like about the sheer scope of the singer’s wardrobe at this point. It aligns with the maximalist, more-is-more theme of  Renaissance  and its celebration of ballroom culture. In the underground world of ballroom and drag, largely populated by marginalized Black and brown queer voices, there is nothing more aspirational than unbounded excess.

It’s easy for one to get the sense that Beyoncé is changing clothes so frequently and so wildly not particularly because she has to maintain our attention, but because she wants to. It would make sense for an artist, album, and tour squarely focused on self-determination and control. One of the show’s interludes features an emcee, full of boastful sass, poking fun at fans’ never-ending pleas and thirst for supporting  Renaissance  music videos. “You’ve asked for the visuals,” the voice says. “You’ve called for the queen. But a queen moves at her own pace.” There are no visuals yet, but there has been an effective and fabulous exploration of the album’s world through a plethora of looks, including ones worn in the “I’m That Girl” teaser visual, appearances at the Grammys, and a haute couture collaboration with Olivier Rousteing at Balmain. In fact, the aesthetic has been so well constructed that fans are eagerly replicating and building upon it with their  own looks .

There are undoubtedly more custom looks to come from Beyoncé—she has not even made her way through the reported  41 custom pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes  she bought along for the ride. It would make sense if the North American section of the tour, which kicks off next month, features even more considered and specific references to cities. Wearing the designs of New York–based designer Telfar while in the New York City area could be fun and meaningful. Perhaps she could wear a gown by Taiwanese Canadian designer Jason Wu while performing in Toronto. There are a lot of possibilities. But then again, Beyoncé has always marched to the beat of her own fashion drum, so it’s possible she has different plans entirely. As she’s told us, a queen moves at her own pace.

Where can you get tickets?

Tickets for the North American leg of the tour will be available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Feb 6, with an exclusive presale to BeyHive members, according to a Live Nation press release.

Verified Fan registration is now open. Once you register, you'll be placed in a lottery system that determines which fans get invited to purchase tickets. Registration alone doesn't guarantee tickets. If you're selected, you'll get an access code the day before tickets go on sale. Everyone else will be placed on a waitlist. According to Live Nation, this process is intended to help Ticketmaster weed out the resellers and verify your account so that actual fans get priority to buy tickets.

Citi cardmembers will have a special Citi Presale after the Verified Fan process. Get more details here . Verizon will also offer an exclusive presale through their customer loyalty program Verizon Up .

Will Beyoncé be using Ticketmaster like Taylor Swift to sell tickets?

Yes, but given what happened with Taylor Swift's Eras tour (and the fact it led to Congressional hearings about Ticketmaster ’s practices), it seems very likely both Beyoncé and Ticketmaster would want to avoid repeating that mess. That most likely explains the usage of the Verified Fan system.

Where will Beyoncé be playing?

The Renaissance World Tour will hit 40 cities in North America and across Europe. Stops include Paris, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, and many more.

What has Beyoncé said about the Renaissance World Tour?

She just announced it was happening with a post on February 1. Her website didn't immediately contain any more details. But during the Wearable Art Gala in October 2022, she appeared to confirm it would start this summer, as a backstage tour with her mother Tina Lawson was up for auction at the event.

Will Beyoncé be performing at the Grammys (on February 5) and sharing more tour details there?

Not clear yet, but she is the most nominated artist at the ceremony . On January 21, Variety reported that “ talks with show producers are ongoing for a possible onstage appearance ” by Beyoncé.

What can we expect from the tour on stage?

Beyoncé hasn't shared that yet either, but given the artistry she put into her recent Dubai show , it's fair to say we can expect no less than excellence, elaborate costumes, and an incredible experience.

This post will be updated the moment more detail is released.

Is Beyonce coming to Manila? Promoter’s tweet has got the Beyhive buzzing

Images: @renaissanceworldtour_

Is Beyonce coming to the Philippines? The Filipino Beyhive seems to have been stirred up after this tweet by concert promoter Live Nation Philippines made the rounds online.

“SAY WHUUT?” the event company wrote, referencing a clip from Beyonce’s Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show they posted in which she performed alongside Bruno Mars and Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

In the 29-second video, the pop star remarks, “Say, what?” about 18 seconds in as Bruno and Chris sing the chorus of Uptown Funk .

The tweet was picked up by @RenaissanceWT, the Twitter fan page run by the fan club @yoncecapital that posts regular updates on Beyonce’s latest world tour.

“What do you know, Live Nation Philippines?” It said.

Live Nation then posted a follow-up tweet about Bruno Mars’ upcoming two-day show in the Philippines in June, with tickets for Day 2 still up for grabs.

The Renaissance World Tour, Beyonce’s ninth concert tour, was announced in February and began in May. The show will run in 40 cities and features a three-hour concert.

Of course, it could be possible that the concert promoter simply wanted to make some noise for Bruno’s Day 2 show. After all, Asia isn’t on the list of stops for the Renaissance tour before it wraps up in September. That said, could we be looking at an extension?

Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour Is the Spiritual Revival America Needs Right Now

The superstar's nearly three-hour tour de force couldn't have arrived at a more urgent time when her Black and queer muses are under attack.

“ America, America has a problem .”

Two weeks ago, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down several laws that were intended to protect Black Americans and LGBTQIA individuals — Beyoncé was wrapping up the European leg of her highly anticipated Renaissance World Tour.

When the self-proclaimed Queen Bey returned to her homeland on Wednesday night, the timing couldn’t have been better. For a massive tour that was inspired by Black and queer artists who lived on the fringe of society — only the most consequential figure in modern music could provide refuge. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Beyoncé understands the power of her platform and how inescapably political it is.

For her to launch her pro-Black, pro-Queer, and pro-feminist U.S. tour date in the birthplace of democracy is as intentional as her dedicating her critically acclaimed album Renaissance to her late great Uncle Jonny — a Black queer man who passed away from HIV complications when she was younger. While other megastars drop Easter eggs on their fans for pure entertainment, Mrs. Knowles-Carter is more deliberate in tapping into the social consciousness of the challenging world her diverse fans still have to navigate.

Those who are white and conservative might consider her intentions propaganda. For a Black queer millennial like myself who has followed Beyoncé’s career my entire life, this is salvation.

I’m 31 years old, and I can’t ever recall when Beyoncé was not the soundtrack of my life. Growing up in Houston, Texas (her birthplace), my first Beyoncé concert was in 2004 when she performed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. I would later find out that I attended the same high school she (and powerhouse musician Lizzo) did — Alief Elsik High School.  It was in that same school building that I danced to her hit single “Single Ladies” during a 2009 talent show competition (I would later do the iconic dance with my Man of Honor at my wedding in 2021 ).

So it came as a surprise to no one that my squad of Black queer friends and I got glammed up to see her in the City of Brotherly Love. Draped in mesh, sequins and leather — we were serving disco cowboy as we came ready to slay. We first attended Xfinity Live’s official Renaissance concert tour tailgate (better known as “BeyGate”) where nostalgia immediately kicked in as Beyoncé’s 25-year catalogue of hits shuffled in a room filled with fans from various backgrounds and generations.

By the time we hit our floor seats, it was clear that we were gearing up for an out-of-body experience. To maximize the moment, I did something that I’ve never done at a concert before: I turned off my phone and soaked in the memories. Philadelphia gave the reigning Queen of Music a royal sold-out welcome at Lincoln Financial Field as 67,000 screaming fans (more affectionately known as the BeyHive) rocked with her for nearly three hours.

Beyoncé was a musical impresario — singing her own contemporary hits then merging them into familiar classics. (She transitions her 2011 ballad “1+1” into a cover of Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Going Down” in the first act.) Her band is immaculate — taking us through the 1970s, ’80s, ’90s, ’00s and back again without losing the pulse of the audience. Her vocals are disciplined, effortless and powerful — she’s not just singing, she’s sangin’ with the mic actually on. With all that’s happened in the past few weeks, many of her past tracks took on a different meaning and proved to have aged remarkably well (her performances of “I Care” and “Flaws and All” felt notably more passionate).

Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour

The show’s choreography was a masterclass. Beyoncé and her flawless dancers grooved through modern hip-hop, crump, break-dance, ballroom voguing, and had the crowd on its feet the entire night. Surprisingly, she didn’t lean on fan-favorites such as “Single Ladies,” “Drunk in Love,” and “Deja Vu” to achieve this feat. The woman has such a huge discography that you almost forget what she chose to cut for this tour.

But what will perhaps stay with me the most are the thematic elements that drove the entire show. Beyoncé explores Afrofuturism — taking her fans to a high-tech, melanated universe that’s not scary, but beautiful and liberating. A world where women in all shades, sizes, and orientations can be as sexual as they choose. A world where Black people are self-empowered and unapologetic about it. A world where LGBTQIA people can exist without fear — being as fat, femme, and free as they please.

In the most heartwarming moment of the show, Beyoncé’s 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter performed alongside her. Blue, already a Grammy winner , is impressively comfortable on stage and delivers choreography as fierce and imaginative as her mother. Moved by this family exchange, I had an epiphany about what Beyoncé was trying to achieve with this tour: She’s envisioned a world in which those whom she cares for so dearly (her family and fans) can be their best selves.

beyonce Renaissance World Tour

In those nearly three hours, it felt like the world was at peace. A crowd of thousands of singing fans weren’t idolizing a celebrity, but sharing safe space with diverse people connected by a powerful force called music. This wasn’t a concert; it was a spiritual revival for a demographic of individuals who needed to feel heard, seen, and felt. It was the best damn musical experience I’ve ever had in my three decades on this earth, and I doubt anything else will make me feel as inspired from a mainstream artist for quite some time.

At a time when it feels like the rest of America has a problem — the America I was in on Wednesday night at Lincoln Financial Field didn’t.

Beyoncé raises – and clears – her own ambitious bar at Renaissance tour US opener

renaissance world tour philippines

PHILADELPHIA – Two  Beyoncé s come to play on her Renaissance World Tour .

There is the understated Beyoncé  of the opening segment, her creme brulee -colored hair blowing delicately as she vocalizes intently through “Dangerously in Love,” sits elegantly atop a sliver baby grand piano for “1+1” and thanks the crowd for their loyalty (“You are the reason I’m standing on this stage”).

Then there is the Beyoncé of the other five segments of the show, with themes such as “Renaissance,” “Opulence” and “Motherboard.”

This Beyoncé is an unstoppable force of precise movement and vocal dynamics, a superstar who, two months shy of turning 42 and in the where-did-the-time-go third decade of her career, has raised – and cleared – her own ambitious bar yet again.

At Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field Wednesday, Beyoncé finally unveiled her colossal, eye-popping production in the U.S. She’s already played for a million-plus fans since launching the world tour in Sweden in May, allowing her time to perfect every second of this polished, 2 ½-hour spectacle that will play nearly two dozen stadiums through October.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Though a tiny, taut figure on a stage designed with ramps, staircases and catwalks, Beyoncé loomed magnificently on a video screen wall, her doe-eyed beauty and trademark snarls amplified to reach the farthest cranny of the venue.

Bombarded with bras : Drake attracted much attention from fans at his Detroit tour stop

The dazzling concept videos that ushered in each changeover – particularly, the futuristic visual feast that created a Bey-bot for the “Renaissance” segment – captivated, never feeling like costume-change filler or a glitzy stall tactic.

Of course, there is no stalling in Beyoncé’s universe . The blizzard of beats powering “I’m That Girl” and “Cozy” was complemented by rigidly snapped elbows, severe shoulder shrugs and cocked hips by Beyoncé and her cadre of 10 female dancers.

Her ode to house music, punctuated by “Cuff It” and “Break My Soul” – standout tracks from last summer’s “Renaissance” album – pulsed accordingly, with lights attacking from every angle of the stadium.

Clad in a Barbie-pink gown with more slits than material, Beyoncé radiated glam-infused confidence. When her sunglasses slid down her nose one too many times, they were brusquely tossed offstage. No errant eyewear will impede her rhythm.

A hearty rump shake at the start of “Break My Soul” sent the sold-out crowd into spasms, but it was the midsong interpolation of Madonna’s “Vogue” that further encouraged their glee as Beyoncé name-checked Lizzo, Nina Simone, Solange Knowles and Jilly From Philly in her recitation.

By now, the Beyhive knew to expect an appearance by Blue Ivy, the 11-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter), who started joining the team on stage in Europe. But even with advanced knowledge, the crowd erupted when the preteen arrived during “My Power,” leading the dance crew down a ramp while Mom followed atop a glistening tank-like vehicle.

Blue Ivy ably kept pace with the fleet feet around her, ending “Black Parade” with her fist in the air. As the audience showered the young Carter with more whoops of appreciation, Beyoncé’s game face melted into a proud smile, leading to one of the most memorable snapshots of the night.

The tour set list draws heavily from “Renaissance” as expected, but Beyoncé sprinkles in hits – though maybe not enough for some fans – from her robust catalog, including “Naughty Girl” and “Formation.”

A musical highlight landed with the double punch of classics “Love on Top” and “Crazy In Love.” With her male dancers lined up behind mic stands, Beyoncé humorously led the crowd through the escalating key changes in “Love on Top” before the delectable groove of the song dovetailed into the snaky bass line of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” complete with throwback choreography.

It was a moment of unadulterated joy that remained through the sizzle of “Crazy in Love,” which included a fabulous coda by her hardworking band.

The tempo of the show decelerated a bit as Beyoncé entered the homestretch in her already-famous Loewe bodysuit designed with strategically placed handprints. “Plastic Off the Sofa” and “Virgo’s Groove” didn’t have the audience as adrenalized as intensely as other selections from “Renaissance.” But by the time she reemerged for the encore sporting a yellow-and-black headdress and offering a powerful missive with “America Has a Problem,” attentions were rapt again.

Soaring balladeer and poetic messenger. Refined couture and sequined camouflage. Warm smiles and dramatic sneers.

Beyoncé delivers all of it, with excellence.

Schools and learning institutions play a key role in shaping their students’ future. After all, education is an indispensable part of life, as it adds to one’s personal growth and helps to overcome many of life’s challenges.

The most revered academic institutions today have been in existence for centuries (even millennia!), with some still headquartered in their original buildings and venues. These amazing structures have stood the test of time, and are worth checking out, if not for their historical value, then definitely for the architecture.

One such structure is the University of Coimbra which was officially recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2013. Originally situated in Portugal’s capital Lisbon in 1290, the university was relocated several times before being placed permanently at its present site, King John III’s palace near the Mondego River in Coimbra, in 1537.

The institution has been around for so long, it’s no surprise that it has a colourful history. You can visit some of the iconic landmarks on its grounds, such as the 18th-century Joanine Library and Saint Michael’s Chapel.

The library, housing more than 300,000 volumes of books, is the highlight of the university. If you’re an architecture fan, you may appreciate its opulent interior with intricate woodwork.

Meanwhile, in Saint Michael’s Chapel you will be treated to beautiful paintings and frescoes, as well as a Baroque organ that still works today. The organ was given to the chapel as a gift in the early 1700s.

You can also take a leisurely stroll at the university’s botanical garden that is surrounded by thriving foliage.

Here’s a list of other long-established institutions of higher learning across the globe you may want to explore.

University Of Santo Tomas

Established in 1611, the University Of Santo Tomas in Manila, the Philippines is the oldest in Asia.

This private Catholic institution was formerly called Colegio de Nuestra Senora del Santisimo Rosario, but was renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas (University Of Santo Thomas) as an homage to the Dominican theologian, St Thomas Aquinas.

Name change aside, the university was also moved from its original spot in the walled city of Intramuros to Manila’s Sampaloc district some seven decades later.

The main building of the university is a marvellous illustration of Renaissance Revival architecture. Visitors are allowed to explore its UST Museum, which has collections or artefacts from the 1800s. Constructed in 1869, it is deemed the oldest museum in the Philippines.

Al-Azhar University

Regarded as one of the world’s earliest learning institutions that still exists today, the Al-Azhar University opened its doors in 970 during the Fatimid Dynasty in Cairo, Egypt.

But even though it has been around for over a millennia, Al-Azhar only received its “university” status in 1961.

The academic institution is also known as Qiblatul ‘ilm, or The Centre Of Knowledge, because of its diverse offerings of Islamic studies. Besides Islamic and Arabic studies, today the university offers various programmes including medicine, business and agriculture.

Back in the 1300s, an earthquake was said to have hit the city, which caused considerable structural damage to the building. It took a few centuries for restoration work to even begin, and centuries more for it to complete.

Within the university complex lies the Al-Azhar Mosque, which was built in 972. Worshippers congregate at the mosque to perform prayers.

The massive courtyard is surrounded by arcades featuring ornamental keel-shaped arches.

University Of Bologna

Located in the heart of the city of Bologna is the oldest learning institution in Italy – the University Of Bologna. Also known as Alma Mater Studiorum, the university was founded in 1088.

Teachings were formerly held in private homes, churches and convents before being moved to more prominent locations belonging to the institution. Among them are Archiginnasio Palace, Palazzo Poggi and Palazzo Marescotti Brazzetti.

Today, these buildings are used for different purposes. For example, Archiginnasio – once the main structure of the university – now acts as a library and the Anatomical Theatre. Meanwhile, housed within the institution compound is the Palazzo Poggi, which hosts a vast collection of science exhibits.

Palazzo Marescotti, a baroque palace, is part of the department of music and performing Arts.

Having an enrolment of close to 100,000 students, the university has nurtured some of Italy’s most important academic figures like poet Torquato Tasso and philosopher and mediaeval historian Umberto Eco.

Visitors are allowed to tour and check out the buildings for a fee.

University Of Oxford

England’s famous University Of Oxford is believed to have come into existence in 1096, but the exact date of construction is not known or confirmed. Covering a vast expanse of space, the university is made up of various buildings that are historically and architecturally rich.

The University Church of St Mary the Virgin, for instance, is a beautiful church featuring English Gothic architecture. It has a 14th-century spire towering into the sky with gabled pinnacles, and a baroque-style porch, which was built as an addition in 1637. While it’s free to visit the church, there is a fee of £6 (RM33) if you wish to go up the tower to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Of the university’s four museums, the Ashmolean Museum stands out as the world’s first university museum.

It was opened in 1683 as a space to store the personal collections of English antiquary Elias Ashmole, which were donated to the university. The museum was relocated to a larger building in the mid-1800s to house the growing collections, while the former structure was turned into the History of Science Museum.

Today, Ashmolean is dedicated to the study of art and archaeology, including the ancient Egyptian and Italian Renaissance art.

To explore other parts of the university, you have to take a guided tour, which covers interesting landmarks like the Divinity School, Radcliffe Camera and Duke Humfrey’s mediaeval library.

Alternatively, you can also catch a hop-on, hop-off bus that stops by the university or ride a bike to tour the place. Of course, you can also just walk around the area.
