Best Places to visit in Orchha - Travel Guide

Last Updated on: Mar 31, 2023

About the Blog: The erstwhile capital of the Bundelas, Orchha is a laid back town in Madhya Pradesh. Offering a rare glimpse into the history, Orchha boasts of temples, forts, palaces and historic monuments. Read our blog to know more about Orchha, the places to visit in Orchha, how to reach and where to stay in Orchha. Hoping this Orchha Travel Guide will help you plan your trip and itinerary to this small, but beautiful historic town in India.

This was perhaps one of the best sunsets we have witnessed in a long time to come. The winter sun was setting behind the Chhatris of Orchha while we watched the dramatic colours of the sky from the banks of the Betwa River. To be honest, I did not have huge expectations from Orchha after our visit to Khajuraho. We came from Khajuraho to Orchha with an open mind to enjoy whatever came our way. While we were researching for places to visit in Orchha, we realized how much this small town in Madhya Pradesh had to offer. And after exploring Orchha, we simply fell in love with this underrated destination in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.

Sunset at Orchha Madhya Pradesh - Places to Visit in Orchha

Orchha has an old-world charm. Located on the banks of the Betwa River, this small agricultural town of India has some of the most beautiful architectural gems in India. While the town is centered around the Ram Raja Temple, the town and its surrounding countryside are dotted with several monuments, forts, temples and cenotaphs. This 500 years old town is a place rich in history and heritage – a place that was going to become one of my favourites.

Orchha – A Brief History

Orchha was once the capital of a flourishing kingdom ruled by the Bundela Kings. The State was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Chief Rudra Pratap Singh. He also shifted his capital from Garh Kundar to Orchha on the banks of River Betwa. The site of the new town was a better place to fortify against the Mughal attacks.  The Bundelas were the descendants of Gaharwar Rajputs of Varanasi .

After almost a decade, Bir Singh Deo (1605 – 1627) became the King of Orchha and was perhaps one of the greatest Bundela Kings of Orchha. The state reached its zenith in political power and splendor in architecture during his reign. He had built several forts, palaces and monuments, not only at Orchha, but also at Datia and Jhansi. He had also built several temples at Mathura and Varanasi and is one of the major contributors of spreading Bundeli architecture to the Northern parts of India.

Orchha remained the capital of the Bundela Dynasty from 1531 to 1783. Later the capital was shifted to Tikamgarh.

During British rule, the area became a part of Bundelkhand Agency. After the independence of India, Vir Singh, the then king, merged his state with the Indian Union on January 1, 1950. The district became a part of Vindhya Pradesh state, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

Orchha Trip

We visited Orchha during the winter months of January. Our Madhya Pradesh trip started with Gwalior and Morena . After that we visited Khajuraho before arriving at Orchha. Once we landed at Orchha, it seemed like any other small town of India. But once we were exploring the place, we were totally engrossed with the chilled-out vibes of the place. We spent two days in Orchha and explored most of the attractions in the place.

Chhatris at Orchha Madhya Pradesh Tourism - Places to Visit in Orchha

Orchha literally means hidden. There are a lot of interesting places to visit in Orchha, especially for history enthusiasts. Even if you are not into history, the magnificence of the place will definitely draw you in. So here is a quick Orchha travel guide to help you plan your trip and make most of your time in Orchha.

How to Reach Orchha?

Orchha is located in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. The nearest major railway station from Orchha is in Jhansi, around 20 km away and takes about 30 minutes to reach. To get to Orchha, you have to reach Jhansi first.

Jhansi is one of the major railway stations of Central India and is well connected to all the major cities of the country. From Delhi, it is about five to six hours of train journey. However, you should get your tickets well in advance.

If you are flying in, the nearest airport is Gwalior Airport, 130 km away. From Gwalior, you can either take a train to Jhansi and then reach Orchha, or take a private cab to reach Orchha directly. Buses are also available from Gwalior to Orchha.

Since we were coming from Khajuraho, we took a train from Khajuraho to Jhansi and then took a cab to Orchha.

How to reach Orchha from Jhansi?

You can take a private auto or cab from Jhansi to Orchha. A private cab will probably cost you around INR 500. Buses are also available from Jhansi bus stand to Orchha.

Getting Around Orchha

Orchha is a fairly small place and you can easily walk around to visit most of the attractions.

You can also get rickshaws and auto rickshaws to roam around the city. A short ride within the city will probably cost you INR 100 to 200.

You can also rent bicycles and bikes (scooty as well) in Orchha and explore the place.

Orchha Fort, Madhya Pradesh - Places to Visit in Orchha

Now that you have reached this beautiful town, let us find the places to visit in Orchha. Apart from Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary, the entire town is within a radius of 5 km and you can easily plan your trip in 2 days. There are monuments scattered everywhere across the small town. Most of these are a mixture of Bundeli and Muslim architecture. There are also fortified gates or Darwazas marking the limits of the town.

Darwaza or gates in Orchha

While you can definitely jump from one monument to the other, do the touristy thing of taking insta-worthy photographs, the best way to explore Orchha is to savour the place. While you think about how many days you want to spend in Orchha, here is a list of the must visit places in Orchha.

1. Orchha Fort Complex – Amazing Places to visit in Orchha

Orchha Fort Complex

The Orchha Fort Complex is perhaps the grandest structure in Orchha town. This is one place that you will not miss even if you wanted to. The Orchha Fort Complex dominates the skyline of the town containing a large number of monuments that includes palaces, gateways, gardens, stables, temples and pavilions.

Orchha Fort Complex Madhya Pradesh

The fort is protected by a thick wall and has four main palaces – Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal and several other smaller, but impressive structures. The Sheesh Mahal that has now been converted into a boutique hotel. The Betwa River acts as a moat on one side having an arched bridge connecting over the river. Various structures in the complex have been built at different times by various rulers, something that is seen in most of the historic monuments of India. There are plenty of intricate archways, colourfully painted murals, chambers and passageways in the huge Orchha Fort Complex.

Walking around the grounds of the palace area is free. However, if you want to enter Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and some other monuments, there is an entry fee.

Paintings at the ceiling of Diwan-e-Aam at Orchha Fort Complex - Places to Visit in Orchha

This is the first place you enter after getting the tickets. This part of the complex was built by Madhukar Shah in the seventeenth century. The design has been inspired by the Mughal courts, the hall was used by the King to meet the public and deal with matters of administration and justice.

The main highlight of this hall are the beautiful paintings on the vaulted ceilings and the walls. Just look up and you will see some amazing examples of Bundela style paintings.

Raja Mahal at Orchha Fort - Places to Visit in Orchha

Once leaving Diwan-e-Am, you will enter the Raja Mahal, or the King’s Palace. The construction of Raja Mahal was started in 1531 by Bharti Chand and it served as his private residence. The inner courtyard, perfectly square in shape, was the first part of the palace to be built. The rooms around the courtyard served as private quarters for the royal family. You will see these rooms are painted in Bundela style.

Raja Mahal at Orchha Fort Complex - Places to Visit in Orchha

The main highlight of the Raja Mahal are perhaps the vibrant Bundela styled paintings in the six rooms around the courtyard. There are paintings of the Avatars of Vishnu as well as episodes of Ramayana. Other beautiful paintings are found on the wall as well.

There is a second courtyard at the far side and the rooms there also have several beautiful and unique paintings. It is difficult to see the paintings first, but once your eyes are used to the light you will see how impressive the paintings are.

There is another interesting painting of an elephant that is actually made up of 12 women. See it below.

Another rectangular courtyard was added by Madhukar Shah, brother and successor of Bharti Chand. This time, the architectural style was slightly different, perhaps influenced by Mughal architecture. That is why you will see that there are different types of arches at Raja Mahal.

There are staircases to take you to the upper levels and there are five storeys in total. From the upper levels you can look down at the courtyard and the other fort complex surrounding you. It is from here, you get a view of the towering Chaturbhuj Temple and the Cenotaphs.

Once you have explored and head out of the Raja Mahal, climb up a few steps to reach the Jahangir Mahal.

Jahangir Mahal

Jehangir Mahal at Orchha Fort

Jahangir Mahal is perhaps architecturally the most impressive building in the Orchha Fort Complex. It was built in 1610 having a single huge courtyard. The architecture of Jahangir Mahal has both Hindu and Islamic elements.

Jahangir Mahal was built by King Bir Singh Deo to commemorate the visit of emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The place seems to have been used as a guest house and for entertainment. The main entrance was decorated with two stone carved elephants with a bell. The palace has three storeys with 236 chambers.

You can climb up to the upper levels and marvel at the cupolas, domes, pavilions, balconies and the ornate windows. Look around and you will only find brilliance and beauty. From the upper levels you will also get a view of the other buildings and if you look a little far, the Betwa river will also be seen.

Other Structures

Within the Orchha Fort Complex, there are several other structures. One of the interesting structures is the Unth Khana or the camel stable.

A short distance from here is the Rai Praveen Mahal. This was built in the sixteenth century and is named after Rai Praveen, a famous courtesan known for her beauty. The upper levels of the buildings have paintings of Rai Praveen.

2. Chaturbhuj Temple – Places to visit in Orchha

Chaturbhuj temple dominating the skyline of Orchha

While the Orchha Fort is no doubt fascinating, it is the Chaturbhuj Temple that steals the show. Located right in the heart of Orchha, the temple dominates not only the skyline, but also the heart of the town. Built on a high plinth, with impressive spires of various sizes that seem to reach out to the sky. The temple is mammoth, huge and magnificent.

There is an interesting story behind this temple. Historically, the construction of the temple started in 1558 by Madhukar Shah for his Queen Rani Ganesh Kunwari. The construction of the temple was completed by his son Bir Singh Deo.

Legend of the Queen

Legend says that one night Rani Ganesh Kunwari was a devout follower of Lord Rama. One night, she had a divine dream from Lord Rama, instructing her to build a temple for him. The queen was instructed to visit Ayodhya and bring the idol of Rama with her to Orchha. The only condition was that Lord Rama was to be brought from Ayodhya to the temple in one go. Once he was laid down, he would not move from the place.

Chaturbhuj Temple Orchha - Madhya Pradesh Tourism

The queen, with all her devotion went to Ayodhya and brought an idol of Lord Rama with her to Ayodhya. However, the construction of the temple was not yet completed (which is quite understandable) and so the idol was placed at the Rani Mahal, adjacent to the main palace. After the construction of the temple was completed, several attempts were made to move the idol of Lord Rama to the new temple. But the Lord simply refused to move!

Apparently Lord Rama remained in the Rani Mahal itself leaving the Chaturbhuj Temple vacant. The Rani Mahal was converted to Ram Raja Temple and the Rama idol is actively worshiped there even till date.

The Chaturbhuj Temple now houses the idol of Radha-Krishna.

Interiors of the Temple

Interior of the Chaturbhuj temple at Orchha

The interior of the temple is 105m high and is as impressive and elegant as its exteriors. Today the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Chaturbhuj, or the one having four arms. Architecturally, the temple is built in a cross shape representing the four arms of Vishnu.

Having explored the ground levels, you can go up to the upper galleries of the temple. The winding staircases are a bit dark and after climbing some flight of steps with crumbling masonry, you will reach the roof of the Chaturbhuj Temple. The views are, as usual, awesome; with all the major and smaller monuments of Orchha in front of you.

3. Ram Raja Temple – Places to Visit in Orchha

If the Orchha Fort speaks of architectural brilliance and the Chaturbhuj Temple the magnificence of Orchha, then Ram Raja Temple is undoubtedly the heart of Orchha. Ram Raha temple is one of the interesting places to visit in Orchha.

Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshiped as a king and not as a God. It is here you will see that police are designated to guard the temple and they give daily gun salutes to the deity. It is absolutely fascinating.

Ram Raja Temple at Orchha Madhya Pradesh

The temple does not look like any other temple. It is a rectangular building with four towers. It is because Ram Raja Temple is originally the Rani Mahal or the palace of Queen Gansh Kunwari. Just go through the local legend about the Chaturbhuj Temple in the section above to know more about it.

One of the best times to visit Ram Raja Temple is during Ram Navami when local musicians from neighbouring villages gather to sing songs and hymns in praise of Lord Ram.

Ram Raja Temple Timings: 8.00am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 8.00pm

4. Laxmi Narayan Temple

Laxmi Narayan Temple Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Located on a hilltop about 1 km from the Orchha town, what catches attention in Laxmi Narayan Temple is its unique architecture. The building has a blend of temple and fort architecture, something I have not seen in a single building. The fortified outer walls of the temple is square and is flanked by octagonal towers. The inner sanctuary is however triangular. Indeed, a unique architecture. And there is a huge high domed octagonal tower above the inner sanctuary.

Laxmi Narayan Temple - places to visit in Orchha

The exterior of the building was undoubtedly impressive. But what captivated me entirely was its interiors. The interiors have some very beautiful murals and paintings on the walls and ceilings. Episodes of Ramayana, Mahabharata and even episodes from Indian history were painted. There are also paintings depicting scenes of the 1857 uprising.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is absolutely beautiful. The walk of 30 minutes from the Chaturbhuj Temple was completely worth it.

5. Chhatris, the Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha

Chhatris or Royal Cenotaphs of Orchha Madhya Pradesh

The Chhatris of Orchha or the royal cenotaphs are one of my favourite places to visit in Orchha. Constructed in the honor of the rulers of Orchha on the banks of Betwa River, the Chhatris are the highlight of Orchha. There are 15 Chhatris in total of the Bundela kings and their families.

These Chhatris are the memorials and have been built on the spot where the royals were cremated. The monolithic Chhatri dedicated to Raja Bir Singh Deo is one of the finest among the rest.

Chhatri of Bir Singh Deo and Kirpa Ram Gaur at Orchha Madhya Pradesh Tourism - Places to Visit in Orchha

The entrance of the chhatris faces the River Betwa. A few meters away is the significantly smaller chattri of Kirpa Ram Gaur, who was the military commander during the time of King Bir Singh Deo. This is the only Chhatri here that belongs to someone not from the royal family.

Chhatris of Bhagwant Singh and Jaswant Singh at Orchha

The Chhatris are a wonderful set of monuments and also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Orchha. The best place to watch the sunset is from the narrow bridge near the Chhatris. From there you can see the falling rays of the sun on the monuments giving them a golden hue. You can also go on the other bank of Betwa River for a great sunset view.

Sunset view by River Betwa at the Chhatris of Orchha

If you are looking for adventure, then go for river rafting at the Betwa River. The rafting begins at Kanchan Ghat and takes place at a 3.5 km stretch along the Orchha town to Shiv Ghat. The river is generally calm, but there are a few rapids (Grade I/II). There is another option for 6 km of rafting.

Once you start from the Kanchan Ghat, you will see the Chhatris or Cenotaphs first. After crossing the low lying Orchha Bridge, you will come across the Chaturbhuj Temple and several smaller temples. Rafting at Betwa combines adventure with history as you watch the historic monuments of Orchha while tackling the rapids. It is undoubtedly a wonderful experience.

3. Jungle Safari at Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

Lying on the banks of River Betwa, Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across an area of 45 square kilometers. While you can spot Chital, Sambar deer, Nilgai and several reptiles inside the sanctuary, the place is more known for its birds. Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to as many as 100 species of birds. This is a good place for nature hiking and walks.

It is indeed a beautiful historic place. On the last day of trip to Orchha, I got to know that Aishwarya Rai is shooting in Orchha for ponniyin selvan (PS: 1), then I extended my trip for one more day and went to the place where shooting would happen.

Orchha is a lovely place. I did not knew that PS1 was shot there! Thanks for this info..

7 Best Things To Do in Orchha in 2024

Looking for things to do in Orchha Madhya Pradesh? This small town is absolutely a must-visit on your next India trip and this guide has you sorted with the best places to see in Orccha.

The town of Orchha is over 500 years old and is conveniently close to the city of Jhansi, from where you can easily catch trains all over India . The town is well known as a religious centre and for its historical monuments.

Set on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is a great place to escape the crowds and see a quieter side of India.

I visited Orchha as part of a 2 week India trip that also included Abhaneri , Khajuraho , Varanasi and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

A day trip from Jhansi is an easy way to see Orchha, although I would recommend overnighting in the area so you can see more.

Best Things to Do in Orchha

1. orchha palace.

The Orchha palace, or Orchha Fort, is the number one place to visit in Orchha. Built by the Bundela dynasty, Hindu rulers of the princely state of Orchha from the 16 th  century.

The complex technically includes two major palaces as well as a bunch of smaller (but still impressive) outbuildings. It’s heavily fortified, with the river acting as a moat on one side, and outer walls covered in archer slits and elephant spikes.

The Raja Mahal was the residence of the kings and royal family and is richly decorated inside although simpler outside.

paintings in orccha palace

The Jahangir Palace was built for the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who sadly only visited once. It’s a stunning combination of Indo-Islamic architecture with countless arches and intricate carvings.

You can climb to the upper levels of the Jahangir Palace to get great views over the palace courtyard and surrounding area. Although don’t try this if you’re afraid of heights or have mobility issues as there are no barriers on the balconies and the steps are very steep.

Jahangir Palace Orccha

We hired a local guide from the fort office to explain the history of the complex and I’d definitely recommend this as you learn a lot and there are very few signs to tell you what you’re looking at.

Current guide fees are displayed at the ticket office and are typically a few hundred rupees dependent on group size.

Entry is only around 12rs although you will have to pay extra to take cameras in (smartphones are fine).

The complex is open 8 am to 5 pm but subject to change on holidays.

2. Orchha Temples

Orchha is well known as a Hindu religious hub and particularly for its devotion to Rama, the god who is worshipped as a king (Ram Raja) in Orchha.

There are two main temples in Orchha, the Ram Raja temple which is newer and used for puja ceremonies throughout the day, and the older Chaturbhuj Temple which does technically have an operating shrine but is not used for mass worship.

These temples were built by a previous king and queen of Orchha for their respective favourite deities, with the Ram Raja temple being a converted palace.

Visitors can attend prayers at the Ram Raja temple which is absolutely a must do as the energy here is incredible, creating a very powerful experience. Just remember to remove your shoes, dress (and behave) conservatively and leave room for worshippers.

You can also climb the stairs up to the Chaturbhuj Temple which features panoramic views over the fort, cenotaphs, and surrounding countryside. There is a small shrine to Vishnu at which visitors can make offerings and ask for blessings.

3. Orchha Chattris

Chattris are tombs similar to Western cenotaphs but these monuments are unlike any grave or memorial you would find elsewhere in the world. These memorialise different kings of the Bundela dynasty, who also built the Orchha fort.

Set in a large garden and surrounded by flowers in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, this is the most peaceful spot in Orchha to explore and is especially brilliant at sunrise or sunset.

There are four large chhattris and ten smaller ones. Each chattri is a multi-storey building, largely hollow with rows of arches that you can walk between and glimpse the river through. They are topped with domes, some short and rounded and others tall and pointed to mimic the Himalayas. This makes for awesome photos!

Orchha chhattris

4. Saket Museum

This museum, next to the Ram Raja temple, is easy to miss but a must-add to your list of places to visit in Orchha.

The museum is small, but it has some beautiful artworks from all over India representing the stories of Lord Ram in markedly different artistic styles.

The main attraction at the museum is the life-size statues of the gods, brightly coloured and made of fibreglass.

5. Betwa River rafting

As Orchha is built around the river, getting out on the water is a great way to see a different side of the town and a very different experience to your typical sightseeing.

There are a couple of companies offering rafting trips, generally one-way starting from just past the main bridge with jeep transfers back to your starting point. The easiest way to book is to call ahead.

Expect to pay anything from 200-2500rs per person depending on inclusions (ie hotel transfers, lunch).

The river is fairly calm but there are some rapids (Grades 1/2) to keep things interesting. And the water is much cleaner than elsewhere in India so if you end up falling in it’s not the end of the world.

6. Rajni Cooking School

Learning to cook some Indian cuisine is a must-do on your trip and there is an opportunity to do this in Orchha with Rajni Cooking Classes.

Rather than a hands-on school with an industrial kitchen, these classes are hosted by a local woman in her family’s home. While you can help out with making dishes, the classes are mostly a demonstration.

Each class typically starts with masala chai and can include 10+ dishes, depending on group size. And yes, you do get to eat them all at the end!

There is no schedule or online bookings so the best way to organise a class is to make a request via the Facebook page .

Like all Indian towns, Orchha has a main street full of small shops and market stalls. The area around the Ram Raja temple in particular, is full of stalls selling both tourist souvenirs and religious paraphernalia like garlands and ribbons.

The shopping here is good, considering the size of the town and provides a calmer alternative to the larger markets in the big cities. You do still need to bargain hard though!

I found most shops sell similar goods of relatively cheap quality but found some great bargains on clothing.

Orchha Tours

There are very few options available for scheduled guided tours to Orchha, especially for foreign visitors. However, you can easily organise a private driver to take you around, make enquiries at Jhansi station.

How to get to Orchha from Jhansi

Orchha is only 20km from the city of Jhansi which is the closest transport hub.

The best way to get to Orchha from Jhansi is by hiring a taxi which are easiest to find at the train station.

The drive takes around 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and can cost anything from a few hundred rupees to a few thousand depending on your bargaining skills.

There is technically a local train that runs between Jhansi and Orchha however it stops quite a way out from the main attractions and accommodations so it’s not a great option if you have baggage with you.

Jhansi train station

Orchha Itinerary

If you are doing an Orchha day trip from Jhansi, I’d recommend focusing on the palace and two main temples.

If you have another day, try getting up early to see the cenotaphs (chattris) at sunrise then head out for a bit of river rafting. Hit the markets for some food and a bit of shopping.

Where to stay in Orchha

Like most of regional India, there are no chain hotels and most accommodation is small family-run ‘hotels’ that are very basic however there are 2-3 higher quality options aimed at foreign tourists.

Luxury: Amar Mahal Hotel – Mahal means palace and this place truly does look like one, right from the front gates

Mid-range: Orchha Resort –this is a mass-market tourist option but offers all the more comfortable touches like a pool, spa and buffet that are less common elsewhere

Budget: Hotel Ganpati – a friendly family-run spot with river views and basic but clean rooms

A tip for Indian accommodation: you get what you pay for so if something looks like a great deal don’t expect it to be as good as the pictures. Things like wifi, AC and hot water may be advertised but not actually working.

Frequently asked questions on Orchha

While peak tourist season in India is from November to February and has the coolest temperatures, you’ll find the place quieter and get even better deals if you come slightly before or after. I last visited Orccha in October which had good weather (hot and humid but manageable with some cooling drizzle).

While there are many attractions in Orchha, the town is most famous for its fort/palace, closely followed by the temples of Ram Raja and Vishnu.

This really depends on how much you like to cram into a day and how many of the things to do in Orchha are of interest to you. Most people only do a day trip, but I would say overnighting (2 days) is ideal.

In Short: Places to see in Orccha

Visiting Orchha is a truly unique experience and a great option for travellers wanting an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Happy travelling!

  • 15 Best Things to Do in Orchha
  • Madhya Pradesh

The list of things to do in Orchha covers a range of activities that will make you fall in love with this place. Resting royally on the banks of river Betwa, this historic town was founded in the 16th century.

The brainchild of Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap, Orchha features brilliant architecture in the form of beautiful display of Mughal-influenced Rajput palaces, temples and royal chhatris. Frozen in time, this town seems to retain the original grandeur of the monuments, even till this date.

Being located in a place that is covered with forests and the river Betwa splitting into seven channels, this town was given the name Orchha, meaning ‘a hidden place’. With every turn the river makes, one can find historical landmarks on either side of the river.

Despite being the capital of the Bundela Rajput kings, Orchha seldom witnessed ferocious battles, leading to unscratched monuments that would help you visualize the earlier phases the town has witnessed.

The place is not on many tourist maps but that only tells how unexplored it really is. Less crowd and more peace, this place is just 16 km away from the city of Jhansi. The best way to reach here from Jhansi is by the ever-reliable auto rickshaw. Passing through the narrow winding roads, a time travel back to a more peaceful era is evident.

The best time to visit this town of solitude is from October to March when the cool breeze adds on to the serenity of the place.

Here are some of the best things to do in Orchha:

Pay a Holy Visit to the Laxminarayan Temple

The temple is one of the three most important temples in Orchha, offering a perfect and unique mix of fort and temple architecture. The fascinating thing about this temple is that despite its dedication to Goddess Laxmi, there is no idol of the Goddess kept inside.

The temple was built by Vir Singh Deo around 1622 but inadequate maintenance brought down the magnificence of the temple. It was reconstructed around 1793 by Prithvi Singh and brought it back to its glory.

Highlight : The current structure stands firmly with frescoes and paintings hanging on the temple walls. Based on certain social and secular themes, the vivid colours of the frescoes are still intact. The temple also has geometrical carvings of scenes from the life of Lord Krishna.

The Best Things to See and Do in Orchha, India

Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

The word ‘Orchha’ means ‘hidden palace’, and true to its name, this majestic city is one of the hidden treasures of the country. Located in the central state of India, Madhya Pradesh , Orchha was once the capital of Bundela Rajput Kings, and was established in 1501 by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh. Though a small town, the grand history and monuments of this place make it a must-visit for tourists.

Marvel at the stunning jahangir mahal.

The Orchha Fort Complex comprises three magnificent palaces – one of them being the Jahangir Mahal. With classic Mughal architecture , the palace was built as a citadel for the Mughals, which made it quite important for them. The domes of the palace are built as per the Timurid customs , and also the lawns and gates are massive enough for war elephants to enter. With beautiful turquoise tiles on the front wall, Jahangir Mahal is a three-storeyed monument that even today retains its original grandeur.

Admire the breathtaking Raja Mahal

Learn the exciting history of ram raja temple.

The Ram Raja Temple has an intriguing history behind its formation. Legend says that idols of Lord Rama were to be installed in the Chaturbhuj Temple, but as the temple was under construction, the idols were kept inside the queen’s palace for the time being. Afterwards, when people tried to shift the idols, they refused to move. That’s how this part of the Raja Mahal became holy and was constructed into a temple. It is the one and only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king, hence it’s called the Ram Raja Temple. The temple is specially guarded by police, and to honor the king (Lord Rama), gun salute is given every day.

Revel in the history of Rai Praveen Mahal

Rai Praveen, the Nightingale of Orchha, was a famous singer and poet in the court of king Indrajit Singh. In admiration and honor of her art, the king built this beautiful palace, which came to be known as the Rai Praveen Mahal. The palace has great architecture with beautiful carvings all around, and also the second floor of the palace has numerous picturesque scenes of Nritya Mudra, which are the poses and postures of Indian dance. Rai Praveen Mahal also has a Tope Khana or cannon foundry, which was used to guard the palace from any outside threat.

Stroll around the beautiful Phool Bagh

Phool Bagh is a garden complex that depicts the decorative architecture of the Bundelas. It has intricately designed fountains all around in an eight-pillar pavilion. The water gets collected in a large bowl called Chandan Katora; it is then supplied through the roof, making it look like rainfall. The garden initially served as a retreat for Orchha kings during summer. There’s a central memorial built for Prince Dinman Hardaul, who committed suicide in order to prove his innocence to this elder brother. If you get tired visiting the Orchha Fort Complex, Phool Bagh is where you can relax for a while.

Enjoy boating and rafting in Betwa river

Adventure junkies too can have a good time in Orchha. You can experience river rafting and boating in Betwa river. Rafting in Betwa starts from the boat club, for which tickets are arranged at Hotel Sheesh Mahal and Betwa Retreat by MP Tourism. The tickets cost INR 1,000 per person for one hour or depending on the number of rafts you take. A single raft takes approximately one to six people; so whether you go with family or friends, you can have a great time here.

Experience the charm of Chhatris (Cenotaphs)

Chhatris of Orchha are the impressive royal tombs anciently built for the Maharajas on the banks of Betwa river. The Chhatris are constructed on a high platform supported by pillars, and the domes of the Chhatris have exquisite paintings. To best experience the charisma of these beautiful Chhatris, you must view them from the opposite side of Betwa – the reflection of the tombs in the river water is picturesque.

Witness the architecture of Chaturbhuj Temple

The Chaturbhuj Temple was built during the rule of Gurjara Pratihara dynasty in 875 A.D. in dedication to Lord Vishn u . The literal meaning of Chaturbhuj is ‘one with four arms’. In Hindu texts, Lord Vishnu has been regarded as Chaturbhuj, hence the name of the temple. The temple has beautiful architecture which attracts a number of historians and archaeologists from around the world. The temple today also has idols of Radha-Krishna.

Nature trail in Orchha Nature Reserve

For those who love nature, flora and fauna, this 12-kilometer-long Orchha Nature Reserve can be an enriching experience. The reserve is the part of a 44-square kilometers wide river island which is surrounded by Betwa river and Jamni river. With regularly posted signposts, the trail is well marked; you can get tickets from the reserve office between 8 am to 6 pm. You can even spot a few deer, monkeys and peacocks here. The place can be a good option for cycling too.

Pay a holy visit to the Laxminarayan Temple

Laxminarayan Temple can be a great delight for art lovers. Dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, the temple was built in 1662 with a unique blend of a temple and a fort. Stunning murals in various themes – secular, spiritual and mythological – are found inside the temple along with a number of post-mutiny paintings. You can visit Laxminarayan Temple directly after visiting the Ram Raja Temple, as there’s a straight flagstone path that connects both the temples directly.

Enjoy a royal stay at Sheesh Mahal

Sheesh Mahal is a royal accommodation which was built by King Udait Singh. Now converted into a hotel, the Sheesh Mahal has the Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal on either side. It consists of a huge dining hall with impressive walls and high ceilings and has two royal suites on the upper floor that provide a picturesque view of the city. To experience the feeling of royalty, you must book your stay here.

Jahangir Mahal is a palace that was exclusively built by Bir Singh Deo in 1605 to humor the Mughal emperor Jahangir who was a guest of the Maharaja for one night only. The palace is built in four levels with elegant architectural features of both Muslim and Rajput architecture. Its layout is a symmetrical square built in the inner courtyard of the fort and has eight large domes. It has a plethora of rooms with arcaded openings, projecting platforms and windows with lattice design work. The roof above top floor of this Mahal is accessed through a steep stairway. It provides picture perfect views of the temples and the Betwa River outside the fort complex.

Orchha could make towns many times its size green with jealousy. At heart, Orchha is nothing but a tiny, agricultural village that shouldn't really be of much interest to anyone, but it was blessed by history: for nearly 300 years it was one of the most important urban areas in this part of India. This has left the small town with a supreme display of Mughal-influenced Rajput architecture in the shape of spectacular palaces, temples and royal chhatris (cenotaphs). And thanks to an important temple dedicated to Rama, it's also a major pilgrimage and spiritual centre. Combine these with a laid-back atmosphere, some fabulous accommodation options, as well as opportunities to enjoy the surrounding pastoral countryside, with walking, cycling and rafting all on the agenda, and you'll understand why Orchha can be considered one of the highlights of Madhya Pradesh.

Orchha

Why Orchha is an underrated addition to any India itinerary

Orchha India

Orchha might just be the greatest Indian town you’ve never heard of.

I can distinctly remember carefully looking over my Delhi to Kathmandu itinerary before departure, and having no discernable idea of where Orchha was, or why it might be worth including on an India itinerary.

Of course, I knew Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Kathmandu, and other hotspots, but my mind just drew a blank when it came to Orchha. It’s a wonderful thing, too, because when you have no preconceptions about a place, you’re leaving the door wide open to be wowed.

Orchha, as it turns out, is a very different side of India, and one that I’m very happy I became acquainted with. In many ways, Orchha was the unsung hero of the trip, as it offered an intimate look into a different pace of life with a history that was both fascinating and captivating.

Orchha India

Why come to Orchha?

Founded at the turn of the 16th century by Rudra Pratep Singh, Orchha quickly became of some importance because of the impressive and opulent fort that was built there during Singh’s reign, as well as his own showing of independence and military might. He was a chief of Bundela Rajput descent who reigned over the city from 1501 to 1531, during which time he accomplished an awful lot.

What’s remarkable about Orchha is that, compared to other Indian towns and cities, it remains very much unchanged from its original formation. The town has a distinct medieval aura that woos you with its charm. Sure, modern daily life swirls around the town, but the building blocks of the town are clearly and delightfully historical.

GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN INDIA WITH INTREPID TRAVEL

What should I see and do in Orchha?

Orchha, due to its size, is a really manageable city from a tourist perspective. During our visit, Intrepid set up guided tours of major sights, but we also had a fair bit of time to explore on our own, which I actually really appreciated. This setup ensured that I covered my bases from a historical perspective, but that I also had some room to make this part of the trip “my own,” and discover on my own terms.

Part of making “my own” trip ironically consisted of discovering with others in my group. John and I actually ended up bonding over our experience at Orchha’s funerary temples (known as Chhatris), which wasn’t on the itinerary, but meant a lot to both of us. We also ended up seeing some other members of our group there as well, and taking a few fun photos together, which only added to the experience.

Orchha India

Orchha Fort Complex

In Orchha, you simply won’t be able to miss the Orchha Fort Complex, even if you wanted to. This sight dominates the skyline and the feeling of the town. The complex consists of the fort itself, but more broadly refers to the palaces and temples in the same area of the fort itself, as well as the gardens and pavilions.

READ MORE: THE MAGIC OF MOVING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE IN INDIA

The main palaces which are worth seeing are Raja Mahal (Raja Mandir), Jehangir Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal. Jehangir Mahal in particular is spectacular, and will likely resemble nothing you’ve seen previously in your life. If you’re a fan of Indo-Islamic architecture, then you’ve hit the proverbial jackpot. It was built in the 17th century by the ruler Vir Singh Deo, who built it as a warm welcome for the visit of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Apparently the welcome wasn’t warm enough, as the two engaged in a bloody war shortly thereafter with Jahangir’s troops coming out on top. However, it wasn’t long before Vir Singh Deo again was back on top, and he remained a proud fugitive the rest of his life.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Like the Orchha Fort Complex, you couldn’t avoid the Chaturbhuj Temple even if you wanted to. The spherical spires stretch nearly 350 feet into the air and are impressive and imposing to say the least. The temple was started by Madhukar Shah, but completed by his son, Vir Singh Deo in the 17th century. The temple is dedicated to the god Vishnu, which is exemplified by the name “chaturbhuj,” which in sanskrit literally translates to “one who has four arms.”

Looking at dates, it’s clear the Bundela Rajputs went on an unprecedented building spree in the early 17th century and constructed an impressive collection of buildings and temples, most of which are still standing today.

These cenotaphs are living monuments which pay respect to Orchha’s past royalty, including the likes of Vir Singh Deo, which is separated away from the rest of the cenotaphs near the water. As I mentioned before, during our afternoon off, myself and another participant, John, moseyed on down and were in awe when we got there. Chhatris, right on the banks of the Betwa River, is just a 10 or so minute walk from the center of the town, and I’d strongly recommend a visit.

A cooking class to remember

The cooking class which you can take part in with Intrepid might just have been the highlight of my time in India, if only because we were warmly welcomed into someone’s home in Orchha for the experience. We learned about the local cuisine in an intimate cooking demonstration in a local family’s home. The kids were working on their homework with dad, and mom graciously made a meal from scratch, then we were able to indulge, and it was scrumptious.

Understanding what went into the meal (which was, as it turns out, equal parts spice and love) altered my experience and appreciation for Indian cuisine. While I do love solo travel, I really don’t see how I would have had this experience without Intrepid’s support for and connection to the local community.

READ MORE ABOUT THIS MEMORABLE COOKING CLASS

Furthermore, our local leader, Chime, played a big part in elaborating upon and contextualizing the importance of cooking in Indian culture and, once again, served as an important bridge for our knowledge of India.

Oh to be in Orchha Again

More than big cities like Delhi and Kathmandu , I yearn to be back in Orchha. In many ways, Orchha is like one big outdoor museum, where you’re immersed in the town’s history and stories. That’s what I keep coming back to with Orchha, the sense that you can get the story and see the town without much effort because almost all of the town is worth seeing.

However, I also know the value of going to a place like Orchha and putting in that effort to understand and appreciate what makes the town unique. They’ve got a proud heritage that you’d be remiss not to dive into while you’re a guest in the town. It’s a history that I didn’t know that I’m now personally attached to, and I’m grateful for that. Places like Orchha – smaller places that can sometimes get lost in the tourist fray – provide value because you don’t have a set of expectations for the town or city to live up to. You get to arrive with an open mind and heart, and simply let yourself get swept away.

The Best One Day in Orchha Itinerary (India)

The Best One Day in Orchha Itinerary (India)

' data-src=

Going on an Orchha trip and wanting to know how to spend a day in Orchha? Below you will find my one-day Orchha itinerary to help you plan your amazing trip.

Orchha is a lovely medieval town on the bank of the Betwa River. The town is bursting with ancient forts, beautifully tiled temples and royal tombs. Also, famous for the Ram Raja Temple, the only temple in the world where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king.

Rudra Pratap Singh founded this UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 16th century, and the town served as the capital of Bundelkhand from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Orchha means “hidden,” and the town is still hidden from tourists. As a result, this town is ideal for tourists who dislike tourist hotspots.

Many tourists choose Orchha as a stopover between Agra and Khajuraho, which I did several times when travelling with groups. I genuinely admire the slow and peaceful lifestyle of the Orchha people.

If you have never visited a small town in India, Orchha will give you a wonderful experience. I planned this one-day Orchha itinerary, but I recommend staying for two or more days.

Here is my one day Orchha itinerary.

Things To Do In Orchha

One day orchha itinerary, start by visiting betwa river.

Betwa River at Orchha with stones. Orchha Itinerary

Orchha’s Betwa River is a beautiful rocky river, only a 2-minute walk away from the Orchha Fort Complex. You can easily spend a couple of hours sitting on the river’s bank and watching the surroundings. The river is well-known for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Sunrise at Betwa River.

The Betwa River also offers rafting and kayaking opportunities. Don’t forget to cross the bridge and get to the other side of the river to capture an outstanding shot of the Chhatris (cenotaphs). After spending some time at the Betwa River, proceed to the Group of Cenotaphs (Chhatris).

Timing:- 24 Hours

Duration of Visit:- 30 Minutes.

Admire The Group of Cenotaphs (Chhatris)

Group of Canotaphs or Chatris with people of Betwa River Ghat, This is one of the best thing to do in Orchha.

The Chhatris of Orchha are a series of cenotaphs built in honour of the king and queen on the banks of the Betwa River. There are 14 chhatris with gardens on either side. All are nicely preserved and kept up.

These chhatris are ideal for spending time wandering around, admiring the magnificent architecture, and capturing some amusing photos.

After admiring the architecture and surroundings of the chhatris, we proceeded to the Orchha Fort Complex. You will arrive at the Orchha Fort ticket counter in 7 minutes.

Timing:- 9 Am – 6 Pm

Duration of Visit:- 30 Min – 1-hr

Visit the Orchha Fort Complex( (Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal)

Jahangir Mahar Back Side.

The most prominent and important sight in Orchha Town is the Orchha Fort, which you don’t want to skip from your itinerary. Rudra Pratap Singh, the Bundela Rajput king, built the fort in the 16th century.

The fort contains various palaces and monuments, but the most beautiful architectural treasures are Jahangir Mahal and Raja Mahal (Raj Mandir).

Admire Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal inside Orchha Fort Complex, Orchha Itinerary.

Jahangir Palace is the most attractive in the whole complex because of its excellent Mughal and Rajputana architecture. Raja Bir Singh Deo built it in 1605 to welcome Mughal Emperor Jahangir for a one-night visit at Orchha.

This is a three-storied structure, and all floors have access for tourists via stairs. From the top level, you can get a panoramic view of Orchha.

Witness Raja Mahal

Raja Mahal Architecture in Orchha fort Complex

Raja Mahal (King’s house) was the place where the royal family stayed till 1783.  The palace was built in a square design, and the outside architecture of Raja Mahal is relatively simple. However, inside the building, you will find stunning artwork and paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses.

Painting on wall Inside Raja Mahal.

Within the Orchha fort, my favourite building is the Jahangir Mahal, and I spend a lot of time visiting all of the floors. In the evening, there is also the option of attending a light and sound show in the fort. After visiting the Fort, proceed to Chaturbhuj Temple, which is only a 5-minute walk away.

Timing :- 9 Am – 5 Pm

Duration of visit :- 1 – 2 hours.

Pay a Visit to Chaturbhuj Temple

Chatarbhuj Temple Entrence.

The Chaturbhuj Temple will be the first thing you see as you make your way toward the Orchha fort complex due to its height. This temple is one of Orchha’s biggest attractions. King Madhukar Shah constructed the fort about 1600 AD at the wish of his wife.

Chaturbhuj means “four-armed,” and the temple was named after Lord Vishnu’s four-armed avatar. This temple was originally built for Lord Rama but was eventually devoted to Lord Vishnu.

The architecture of this multistory temple is a fusion of temple, fort, and palace elements. Inside the temple, there is only one sculpture of Radha Krishana, which surprised me.

Remember to climb the stairs to the top of the temple for a stunning view over Orchha town and fort. After visiting Chaturbhuj, walk to Ram Raja Temple, which is only 2 to 3 minutes away.

Duration of Visit :- 30 Minutes

Discover Ram Raja Temple

Ram Raja Temple With Light Decoration. Orchha Itinerary

Ram Raja Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple is the only temple in India where Ram sculpture holds a sword and shield and is worshipped as the King of Orchha.

Every day, a large number of tourists visit Ram Raja Temple. Inside the temple, you will see a unique sculpture of Lord Rama with his family. You can go to the temple to attend the Arti ceremony, which takes place in the morning and evening.

Note :- Remember that leather articles such as belts and wallets are not permitted within the temple, and photography is also prohibited.

Timing :- 8 Am-12:30 Pm, 1-8 Pm.

Duration of visit :- 30 Minutes.

Take a visit to Laxminarayan Temple

Laxmi Narayan Temple in Orchha.

Laxmi Narayan Temple is 1 km away from Ram Raja Temple. This magnificent temple is dedicated to Lord Laxmi and was established in 1622 by Vir Singh Deo. The most surprising fact about this temple was that there wasn’t any idol of Lord Laxmi or Narayan.

You will find Ganesh sculpture at the entryway, as well as Krishna and Rukmini within the temple. This structure, like the Chaturbhuj temple, features a fort and temple architecture style.

Carwing on wall inside laxmi Narayan Temple.

Several murals and carvings reflect the epic stories of Ramayana and Mahabharta on the temple’s walls and roof. You will also find artwork depicting British culture and lifestyle.

This temple is one of the finest temples to see on this one-day Orchha itinerary, so don’t miss it. Later in the evening, you may see the light and sound show in the Orchha fort.

Timing :- 9 am – 5 pm

Duration of the Visit :- 30 Min -1 Hour

Enjoy the Orchha Light and sound show

If you are interested in history, you can see a light and sound show in the Orchha fort. The show is an hour-long that takes you through the history of the fort.

The show starts with a short introduction to the history of this area, followed by a light and sound presentation about the life of the Orchha Kings. The last part of the show is about how this fort came to be what it is today.

The show is presented in both Hindi and English; the English show begins at 7:30 p.m., while the Hindi version begins at 8:30 p.m. However, this timing is not fixed, and neither is the show sequence, which may be modified.

One Day in Orchha Itinerary Map

Is Orchha worth visiting?

Yes, Orchha is the finest destination to spend a weekend or a single day away from the hustle and bustle of the city and visit wonderfully architected forts and temples. If you are a foreigner, Orchha will provide you with a flavour of life in a little Indian town.

How many days are enough for Orchha?

The answer to this question is dependent on your travel style. One day is more than enough if you only want to visit the fort and temples and relax by the river. Yet, if you want to see monuments and spend some quiet time with no plans or haste, simply enjoy the surroundings and reset yourself.

This is a terrific spot to do it. You can easily spend two to three days in Orchha. I went to Orchha several times only to rest for two or three days.

What is the best time of year to visit Orchha?

The best time to visit Orchha is September through March when the temperatures are mild and cool and visiting monuments and markets are more pleasant.

The hottest months are April through June, when temperatures can reach 47°C. July and August are rainy months, with temperatures ranging from 33°C to 38°C. However, accommodation will be inexpensive at this time.

How to get to Orchha

Orchha is easy to reach by Train, Bus and Taxi.

Train :-The best way to reach Orchha is via train. Jhansi is the nearest railway station to Orchha, which is 15 km from Orchha Town and takes around 40 minutes to reach.

There are excellent rail connections from Delhi to Jhansi, which takes around 5 hours to reach. but definitely, this railway station also connects to numerous other cities in India.

You must get down at the Jhansi railway station. To go to Orchha, take a cab or an autoriksha (tuk-tuk) from Jhansi station.

There are around 74 trains that go from Delhi to Jhansi; I have included some of the most popular ones.

Delhi To Jhansi Trains

You may reserve a train seat using the Indian Railway Website. This train route is quite popular, therefore I recommend making a reservation 2 to 3 months in advance.

Bus :- Regular bus connections to Jhansi are available from Delhi and other important Indian destinations. You can use the Redbus Website to make reservations for buses.

Where to sleep in Orchha

A question about where to stay comes to every traveller’s mind during planning a trip. Since Orchha is a tiny town, you don’t have many options to choose from. I have found some great hotels in Orchha, which I have personally used.

Bundelkhand Riverside Resort :- A 4-star heritage resort, dating back to 1895. This resort is situated on the bank of the Betwa river and 1.5 km from Orchha fort. The resort offers an outdoor swimming pool and a beautiful restaurant with tasty Indian and continental food.

Rooms are clean and comfortable with handcrafted furnishings. This is the hotel where I stayed many times, and I loved it.

Raj Mahal The Palace :- The Raj Mahal is a four-star hotel located 6 kilometres from the centre of Orchha. This Hotel features a large garden area with a wonderful swimming pool. The rooms are pleasant and decorated in a regal style. I felt at ease in the hotel.

Amer Mahal :- A 3-star hotel that offers an outdoor swimming pool, a massage spa, and a wellness centre, located 300 metres from Chaturbhuj temple. The hotel rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated. In front of all the rooms, there is a nice garden area.

How to get around Orchha?

Orchha is walkable because all the tourist attractions are less than 2 kilometres away. If your accommodation is a long distance away, you can take an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to the Orchha fort complex.

Where to eat in Orchha.

In a small town like Orchha, deciding where to eat can be challenging. Because most restaurants look the same and offer almost the same menu. In reality, Orchha provides excellent Indian and international dishes.

There are numerous cafés and rooftop restaurants in Orchha, but these are some of the greatest, which I will share with you.

Open Sky Restaurant:- I can say this is the best restaurant in Orchha in terms of food quality and service. They serve wonderful home-cooked food, and the whole family works together in this restaurant. They are extremely humble and lovely people.

Indiana Restaurant Orchha :- Rooftop restaurant, serving delicious Indian and international food, with nice and friendly staff. and offers a nice view of the Orchha Fort and its surroundings.

RamRaja Restaurant :-This is the oldest restaurant in Orchha and offers the best coffee in town. The restaurant appears small yet provides excellent Indian and international cuisine, including poha, thali, pancakes, hash browns, pizza, and much more.

Orchha Hut Restaurent:- Another restaurant with delicious homemade dishes and a very polite and kind cook. He is his wife who cooks meals with love and care. The restaurant is located on the first level and is budget-friendly.

Bundelkhand Riverside resort :- I admire this place. They serve delicious food in a beautifully decorated royal-style restaurant. I recommend you to try lunch in this Resort too.

Note: You can’t buy alcohol in Orchha, Because there isn’t any shop available, Yet there are still some restaurants that are selling beer. Mediterraneo is one of them. If you want to buy alcohol, you need to go to Jhansi.

More Things to Do In Orchha

Orchha wildlife sanctuary.

The Orchha Wildlife Century is located right across the Betwa river and is easily accessible by foot. According to Century personnel, the best time to sight any animal is early in the morning. Yet, it is rare to discover any animal.

If you enjoy nature walks and being surprised by wild animals while wandering, this is the perfect spot for you. From the wildlife century, you can take some fantastic photographs of the chhatris and the river.

Rafting and kayaking in Orchha.

Rafting on the Betwa River is a wonderful experience. It is ideal for beginners because the rapids are gentle. Rafting here is a relaxing experience with beautiful views. Also, early morning kayaking on the Betwa River is excellent for witnessing the breathtaking sunrise.

                                                            ***

I hope this one-day Orchha itinerary helps you make the most of your visit to Orchha. I enjoy visiting Orchha to spend some lazy time and I believe anyone else does as well. Are you planning to visit Orchha? If you have visited Orchha, how was your experience?

Annulated by rising hills, Orchha is wadded with sweet aroma of custard apples. Orchha: Discover the Rich History of the Riverside Town

Orchha Tourist Places | Madhya Pradesh ( MP ) Tourism

Settled on a quiet and serene landscape, Orchha is a dreamy 500 years old town with dominating stone structures that command the horizon of the town. To the west is the fort, built on an island on the calm Betwa River, separated by a bridge from the main cluster of temples to the east. A row of cenotaphs stands on the banks of the river in the south. Visit and experience the never-ending opulence of the ancient town.

The Orchha Chattris

The town is less crowded and is best explored on a bicycle. Hire a cycle and ride along its quiet roads by the Betwa River on Kanchan Ghat. Take a 15 minutes' walk in the serenity while the sunbeams lighten the 14 Chattris of the Bundelas that stand proudly alongside the Betwa. These multi-level chhatris have a narrow staircase with which you can climb to the top and behold the panoramic view of the town. You can also witness lovely vulture nests and vultures flocking at the windows and domes here.

  • Entry Fees: Indians Rs10, Foreigners Rs 250, Photography Rs 25, Videography Rs 250

The Fort Complex

The fort complex in Orchha is another remarkable site to visit. It houses three prominent historical architectures in a quadrangle: Raja Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal, which is now a heritage hotel run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

Raja Mahal is the oldest of the three and was built by Raja Rudra Pratap in the 15th century. The simple exterior, crowned with chhatris, give way to interiors with elusive murals. Some of these are in brilliant condition, with an excellent selection of colours and intricate designs, especially in the Diwan-e-Khas and Diwan-e-Aam. Every bit of the palace will compel you to imagine, how the minute designs were planned and executed at that time.

Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal was constructed under the reign of 17th century Bundela ruler Bir Singh Deo, to honour the visit of his friend Jahangir, who was also a Mughal emperor. Designed with an interesting blend of Mughal and Bundela architecture, the palace is known for latticework set around a large courtyard. The site presents a great specimen of fine artistry and Bir Singh Deo's enduring legacy to Orchha.

Ram Raja Temple

Take the next stop to the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king and not as a god. The impressive peach coloured building with domes was once the palace of Queen Ganesh Kumari, the wife of king Madhukar Shah, the ruler of Orchha. It was known as Rani Mahal back then. The best time to enjoy the festivity at the temple is during Ram Navmi celebration in which local musicians from neighbouring villages gather to chant and sing for hours.

Sound & Light Show

After a long day, relax at the fort courtyard as you watch the spellbinding sound-and-light show. The one-hour show brings to life the 500-year-old glorious history of Orchha, from Rudra Pratap Singh's discovery of the hunting spots to the rise of a mighty kingdom. There are noble deeds that would leave you awe-struck.

  • Entry Indians Rs 100; Foreigners  Rs 250
