Classic Kenya Safari and Beach holidays: Masai Mara with Kenya Coast or Zanzibar. There is excellent travel infrastructure for all price categories and they are ideal for families and honeymooners

Kenya: the home of the original safari. With its famous safari parks and expansive coastline, Kenya is the obvious choice for a safari and beach holiday. Add the wildebeest migration, venturing into the Masai Mara from the Serengeti in Tanzania, Making Kenya a great safari option.

Further Insight On Kenya

Kenya offers diverse landscapes from the open plains, deserts and stunning beaches to the Great Rift Valley, giving way to vast and spectacular lakes, Mount Kenya and neighbouring Mount Kilimanjaro. Most of the parks lie in the south-west quarter of the country, dominated by the Masai Mara spilling into the Serengeti in Tanzania.

For a safari and beach holiday to Kenya, we would recommend combining one or a few of the following:

Masai Mara – one of Africa’s most famous national parks and home to the annual wildebeest migration (alongside the Serengeti). The Masai Mara offers an abundance of both wildlife and, unfortunately, tourists. We tend to stick to the smaller concession areas where game is plentiful but minibuses are rare.

Amboseli – beautiful landscape hence being one of the most photographed areas of the world: Mount Kilimanjaro forms the backdrop to the numerous herds of elephant populating the region. Northern parks – avoid the unfortunate mass tourism and plethora of minibuses that can dominate the main parks, an head off the beaten track to the conservancies adjacent to the Mara or to the wonderful northern parks of Laikipia such as Lewa and Samburu.

The Kenya Coast – vast stretches of white sandy beaches lapped by turquoise seas but regrettably spoilt by tourism. Head north towards Malindi, Watumu or Lamu or south to Diani for some good beach options. (Mombasa, where Africa embraces mass tourism with high-rise hotels littered along the coastline, is not a place Safari&Beach would recommend).

Nairobi – the gateway to safari in Kenya and a central hub for many eastern African airlines. Only really worth a night’s stopover at the beginning and/or end of your trip Due to mainstream tour operators now sending over a million visitors a year to the country, safari&beach are very particular as to where we might direct you. We limit our recommendations to smaller lodges, off the beaten track and away from the minibuses.

Kenya evokes all kinds of emotions and memories from the story of Joy Adamson, The young Queen at Treetops, the beaches of Mombasa, to the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. We guarantee a trip to Kenya will leave you with plenty of your own emotions and memories and Safari&Beach look forward starting that process with you.

Safari and beach destinations in Kenya are all very combinable.

The Maasai Mara always worth a visit for the sheer expanse of its open plains, pumping with wildlife throughout the year and part-home to the great wildebeest migration.

Kenya’s Northern Parks, within the Laikipia eco-system, see arid landscapes, rare species, with hugely successful conservation projects away from the hubbub.

Amboseli & South. Amboseli, resident huge herds of elephant and with Mount Kilimanjaro as a back drop, make it a photographer’s dream. Tsavo East and West, lie close to the coast, and make safari very combinable with days out from the beach.

Kenya’s coastline is amongst the best in the world. Soft powdery white sand lapped by warm turquoise seas make it a dream beach location.

Nairobi, although mainly a stop over city, pre & post international flights is growing in popularity with some great new hotel options.

The Masai Mara is unquestionably one of the most famous parks in the world and quite rightly so. The enormous herds of migrating wildebeest attracting several predators makes for an unrivalled wildlife spectacle.

Here you can immerse yourself in a true wilderness experience either for a few days combined with elsewhere, or really feel the benefits of true escapism over a longer stay.

Amboseli, famous for its incredible population of elephant, combined with the stunning backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, is a visual spectacle and a great park to visit in its own right or part of a fuller Kenyan safari.

Kenya’s coastline is amongst the best in the world. Soft powdery white sand lapped by turquoise seas makes it a dream beach location.

Lake Victoria is the setting for a holiday that’s about as far away from it all as you can possibly get. It’s the world’s second-largest freshwater lake and is the magical source of the Nile.

The gateway to safari in Kenya and a central hub for many eastern African airlines. Only really worth a night’s stop over at the beginning and/or end of your trip.

Thank you so much for all the effort you put into planning and arranging our itinerary – everything went smoothly and everyone we dealt with in Africa was delightful, thanks to you. It was a magical trip and far exceeded all my expectations – I could have stayed at Ol Seki forever.

Masai Mara, Kenya & Zanzibar, October 2019

We had a fantastic time – by breaking the holiday into plenty of different stages, it felt more like a month’s holiday, rather than just 2 weeks. Lewa Safari Camp was very luxurious and comfortable.

This journey will show you the best that Kenya has to offer. See a variety of wilderness areas with incredible and variant wildlife viewing, cultural interaction and activities to get involved in. At the end of your holiday it is time to relax at the white sands and blue waters of Indian Ocean.

The Kenyan coast has a different climate to the savannah lands such as the Masai Mara. On the beach itself, the humidity is normally kept at bay by the breezes that blow onshore from the Indian Ocean. The best time to visit is usually between December and March. During April and May, and November the heat is broken by rain. But because it has an equatorial climate, coastal temperatures remain steadily hot for most of the year.

Kenya Beach Safaris – When To Participate

Anytime! Kenya safaris and beach holidays can be undertaken any time of the year. The best period being July to September – the season of wildebeest migration from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Masai Mara in Kenya. During this season, hotels and airlines are usually heavily booked and one needs to plan early.

But you can choose to undertake this Safari together with your favorite beach holiday at a time when the season is said to be low. Low season falls between the month of April to the end of June every year.

Kenya’s coast enjoys warm tropical weather year-round, and you can enjoy time at the beach anytime of the year. However, if you’re looking for that specific warm weather, great prices and fewer crowds, you can take a look at the following:

December – March: This is the peak tourist season with sunny, dry weather. You will want to book early because hotels and resorts can all be booked ahead of time.

June – October: The cooler, drier months offer a perfect atmosphere. Hotel prices are more reasonable and fewer crowds.

April – May: The shoulder season provides a happy medium with decent weather and smaller crowds. Perfect for families

November: Short rains tend to fall in November, but picture lush landscape and lower prices to compensate.

Kenya beach and safari holidays - A couple in Diani beach

Kenya Beach Holidays 2023 Destination #1 - Diani Beach

Nestled 30km south of Mombasa, Diani is a stunning oasis of turquoise Indian Ocean waters, velvety white sands, posh resorts, delicious Swahili delicacies, and a tranquil ambience.

The list of things to do on a Kenya holiday beach and safari vacation to Diani is limitless. Some of the most popular activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, a day trip to Wasini Island, and sunset dinner cruises.

You can also go on a day tour to explore Mombasa old town, visit the historic Fort Jesus, or lounge at any of the colorful cocktail bars lining the Indian ocean’s shore. When night kicks in, go on a dinner date and enjoy the finest Swahili delicacies at the Thyme, Nyumbani, or Dari restaurants. Alternatively, explore vibrant clubs and nightlife in Mombasa and Diani.

Hint: We recommend combining a 4 days Kenya safari to Masai Mara with a four-night safari at Diani. The package allows you to see the big safari 5 animals , and enjoy a relaxing beach vacation in Diani.

The Best Kenya Beach Resorts in Diani

Some of the best beach resorts in Diani include the Voyager Beach Resort and Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa . These Mombasa beach hotels feature luxurious accommodations, a wide variety of activities, excellent service, and beautiful views.

Some of the activities available while on a Kenya beach safari at Voyager Beach Resort include swimming, snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, sailing, fishing, and more. Additionally, the Voyager beach resort’s nautical-themed room provides exciting and immersive décor as you enjoy your Kenya safari and beach holiday.

Another top-notch lodge while on a Kenya beach safari in Diani is The Sands at Nomad. This resort features comfortable accommodations, a superb restaurant, a swimming pool, and even a spa. It is the perfect place to get some welcome rest, enjoy a candle lit dinner, warm nights and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

If you are looking for a luxurious and relaxing stay by the ocean, then these resorts are definitely worth considering. Many of them offer stunning ocean views, as well as all the amenities and services.

Visitors interested in a more affordable option, can consider the Palm Tree Resort as it offers clean, comfortable, basic accommodation. It features a pool, bar, and restaurant/ dining room. Plus, it is located close to the beach, so you can enjoy beautiful ocean views from your room.

Kenya Safari and Mombasa Holiday Destination #2- Watamu Beac

Yearning to infuse even more marine adventure into your Kenya beach safari? Then head north to Watamu! While Diani takes the cake for being Kenya’s most famous beach, Watamu carries the day for its turtle-watching safaris. If that does not win you over, there are also dolphin watching tours, not to mention velvety white sands and vivid blue waters of the Indian Ocean that makeup Watamu’s lovely beach.

Here, those on Kenya safari and beach holidays are treated to an effortless showcase of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, palm vegetation, underwater sandbars, opulent resorts, and magnificent restaurants. You will also love the beach’s secluded location, and the plethora of activities you can do around it. These include, but are not limited to, swimming, family and romantic picnics , early morning paddle boarding, beach walks, romantic lunches and dinners, surfing, diving, among other water sports.

Other excellent attractions around Watamu Beach include

  • Gede Ruins is a 12th century Swahili village famous for tamarinds, exceptional indigenous forests, baobabs, monkeys, shrews, and distinct architecture.
  • The Arabuko Sokoke, a protected forest reserve teeming with local animals, (including African elephants). Some of its animal, bird, and plant species are endemic to the area. The numbers of unique wildlife, birds, and unique vegetation in the forest are among the largest in East Africa.
  • And the Mida Creek; a 32 km2 estuary best known for its vibrant array of fish, mangroves, birds, crabs, and palms.

Kenya Safari and Beach Vacation Destination #3: Chale Island

Chale is remarkable for its arresting mangrove forests, secluded beach, and undeniably gorgeous azure waters. It is so breathtaking that we have dubbed it the Kenyan capital of magical sunsets.

Kenya safaris and beach vacations spent here are anything but average. Guests can count on being enthralled by this striking coast and the blissful escapism it begets.

Relax on the beach. Go on a life-changing sunset stroll along the beach. Swim, snorkel, dive, surf, and get that blood pumping with some water sports. Sample some of the most delicious Swahili delicacies in existence. Dance the night away at the Sands at Chale Island’s bar. Or simply sit on your room’s balcony and let that striking view do its magic!

Luxury Kenya Safari and Beach Holidays Destinations #4 - Malindi Beaches

For calming sparkling waters, coral reefs, and eye-catching white-sandy shorelines, Malindi beaches make a strong case for being Kenya’s most refined. Spend an all-inclusive Kenya beach holiday here and get to witness first-hand the beauty of Malindi’s Swahili-inspired architecture, perfect weather, and finger-licking seafood.

Leave the comfort of your safari vehicle to explore the Sawa Sawa Dhow Excursions, and visit the Falconry of Kenya whose array of birds, and snakes will leave you awestruck.

Meanwhile, a full-day dhow trip exposes you to secluded beach spots, intimate seafood lunches, snorkeling, and -drum rolls please- a sundowner as you mull over all the wonders you’ve witnessed so far. Alternatively, explore the Ndoro Sculpture Garden and reconnect with nature and art.

Safari and Beach Holidays in Kenya Destination #5 - Wasini Island

Wasini is an island of blinding white beach sands and striking blue waters. She is a unique haven where tranquility permeates and towering palm trees seem to pierce clear blue skies. A Kenya beach safari to this exotic destination introduces you to her imperial ways.

Your mornings may be spent gazing at sunrise, afternoons spent devouring her shore, and evenings spent watching the sunset.

Swim, snorkel, dive, surf, laze around and enjoy hot and cold drinks as you take in the peace characteristic of this secluded island. Or visit the Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park for a colorful display of thousands of fish species native to its waters. You can also stop by the Coral Garden for a mesmerizing exploration of its fossilized coral structures.

In the evenings, revel in the star washed African skies while on a moonlit walk along the beach.

All-Inclusive Kenya Beach Holidays Destination #6: Masai Mara

Let’s go over the numbers for this one. Over 90 large mammal species, over 450 bird species, 280 reptile species, and over 1000 plant species live in Masai Mara! One of the most exciting game reserves, Masai Mara features savannah lush grasslands and wide open spaces.

If that doesn’t strike you as sensational, we don’t know what will.

For the longest time, the Masai Mara has been the star of the show for Kenya safaris and beach holidays.

All-inclusive Kenya safaris and beach holidays in the Mara reveal a striking wonderland of astonishing grasslands, Michelin-starred restaurants, luxurious accommodations, and diverse wildlife.

The park is also packed to the rafters with exciting activities. Apart from the game drives, think hot-air balloon safaris while on a luxury Kenya safari , Masai village visits, and guided nature walks. Enjoy a packed lunch or picnic lunch, venture on lion-tracking tours and adventurous hikes.

Kenya safari and beach holidays.

Safari and Beach Holidays in Kenya Destination # 7 - Amboseli National Park

Those on a Kenya safari and beach vacation will undoubtedly find resplendence and tranquility in the lush grasslands and elephant-swamped landscape of the Amboseli. In plain terms, the park is mesmerizing! and having the Kilimanjaro at its background sure does help the cause.

Enjoy a slower, more thoughtful way of life on an early morning game drive as you weave through the hundreds of cheetahs, dik-dik, giraffes, zebras, hyraxes, buffaloes, and rhinos familiar to these lands.

The snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the gems on a Kenya safari in Amboseli

Go and take a guided walk around the park and spend hours glimpsing at wetlands, Sulphur springs, dried-up lake beds, savannahs, and woodlands.

Let us check you into one of her countless posh resorts, where you will be partaking in the finest things in life as soon as you set foot in the hotel’s doorstep.

Go on sunset/ sunrise horse rides around the park watching games en route to your destination as animals arrive in droves. Watch the wildlife quench its thirst at the lodge watering hole or visit the different watering spots across the park from the comfort of a safari vehicle. Your options are virtually endless. Please contact your tour manager for a detailed list of options.

Safari and Beach Holidays in Kenya Destination #8 - Tsavo National Parks

If you ever find yourself wandering around Voi, make sure to stop over the Tsavo National Parks , a sprawling, sensual duo known for their beauty and serenity. Your first marvel should be the Tsavo East national park, a sensational tourist magnet best known for its dust-red elephants, 300km Yatta Plateau (the world’s most extended lava flow), and Galana River.

Drive around the Galana and uncover a host of other wildlife, including hippos, rhinos, waterbucks, lions, crocodiles, lesser kudu, and gerenuk. Go bird watching, trekking, or camping. Take a break, and find a scenic spot in the park for a picnic lunch as you devour the magnificent scenery around you.

Then, in the spirit of saving the best for last, head over to the Tsavo West national park on the second day and get to uncover an inspiring world of open grasslands, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, and scrublands.

Let the Mzima Springs blow your mind with the slow pace of its crystal-clear refreshing waters. Relish the sight of buffaloes, hippos, lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, and zebras. Discover bird species you never even thought existed. Go hiking, on walks, or do cave exploration.

If you happen to be a geology buff, you will also be treated to breathtaking sights of one of the world’s largest lava flows, known as the Shetani (devil) lava flows.  These are located on your way from Tsavo West National park as you head to Amboseli .

Although the Tsavo West national park is located in an otherwise dry landscape, you nonetheless have a great chance of spotting protected wildlife in the semi desert shrubland. After your adventurous time, end your day at Tsavo West on a high note with an epic sundowner.

As far as accommodations are concerned, the Kilaguni Serena safari lodge and the Ashnil Aruba Lodge are some of your best bets at a great value African experience. Kilaguni Serena safari lodge features a traditionally thatched restaurant for an authentic Kenyan experience.

Both lodges also offer traditional African cuisine alongside an international menu. Another viable five star lodge is found at a private Taita hills sanctuary, known as the Salt Lick Game Lodge.

All-Inclusive Kenya Beach Holidays Destination #9 Lake Nakuru National Park

Some 166 kms northwest of Nairobi lies the lovely Lake Nakuru National Park , a stunning nature preserve that thrives with wildlife birds and enthralling sights. Here, guests are met by an inexplicable surreal landscape that is an incredible mix of picturesque ridges, bushy grasslands, and eye-catching escarpments.

Go on a walk around the lake, and catch a glimpse of the thousands of flamingos for which the park is most known. You will love them- their mannerism, swiftness, and the way they form a pink carpet on the water surface.

There are also game drives to be enjoyed, where you will encounter most of the plains animals such as zebras, rhino, leopards, and lions. Other activities at the Lake Nakuru national park include picnics, hikes, and bird watching excursions.

Kenya Beach and Safari Holiday Packages Destination #10 - Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The Ol Pejeta is a world of serenity and unmatched beauty- from its astonishingly beautiful landscape to its wildlife and top-notch accommodation facilities. It provides a luxury Kenya safari like no other.

Across its 36,400 hectares of lush grasslands comes countless opportunities to engage in some of the most rewarding wildlife viewings you might ever come across.

Go on afternoon game drives and meet two of the world’s only remaining northern white rhinos. Also present are scores of giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, and a colorful host of countless bird species.

Besides exciting wildlife spotting opportunities, the park offers you spectacular scenery to be enjoyed and an enormous activity catalog to keep you on your toes. You can go for game drives, horseback riding, walks, cycling, lion tracking, bird watching or intimate picnic lunches and dinners.

Safari and Beach Holidays in Kenya Destination #11 - Samburu National Park

Those accustomed to the hustle and bustle of the city will appreciate Samburu’s quietness and the dramatic blend of all the natural wonders around it. It is one of the few luxury Kenya safari destinations , rivaled only by the Masai Mara.

The Samburu national park features savannah grasslands as well as extensive plains dotted with unspoiled palm groves and riverine forests.

On an afternoon game drive in Samburu, you are sure to encounter the Samburu Special Five- from the Grevy zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, gerenuk to the reticulated giraffe.

You will enjoy stopping at the Ewaso Nyiro for hours and watching as wildlife trickles in one by one for a sip of its murky waters.

You will love the ambience, the serenity of it, and how the time seems to move slower here. On your last day, sit at your lodge’s dining room enjoying a leisurely bush breakfast with perhaps a last glimpse of the park’s animals roaming furtively about. A bush breakfast is my favorite activity while on a Kenya safari to Samburu game reserve .

Safari Travel Planner

Kenya is ideally suited to a beach and bush holiday. Indeed, you could say that it is tailor-made for this combination of activities. Kenya Safari tour options are covered in detail elsewhere on this website.

Diani Beach,Kenya

Still, we would broadly recommend 7-10 days on safari, ideally split between two or three major reserves, broken up with overnight stays at Lake Nakuru and/or one of the Tree Hotels of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. This could be followed with 4-7 days at a beach resort such as Diani, Malindi, or Watamu.

After breakfast, we take an internal flight from Nairobi to the Masai Mara. Maasai Mara, also known as the Maasai Mara National Reserve, is a world-renowned wildlife destination located in southwestern Kenya. It is named after the Maasai people, an indigenous tribe that has inhabited the area for centuries, and the Mara River that flows through the reserve.

The Maasai Mara is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem and is considered one of the best places for wildlife viewing in Africa. It is particularly famous for the annual wildebeest migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse the plains in search of greener pastures. This incredible spectacle is a natural wonder, attracting visitors from around the world who come to witness the dramatic river crossings and the predator-prey interactions that occur during this time.

Take the Family on a Kenya Safari & Beach Holiday

kenya safari and beach holiday combination

Our 12 Day Classic Kenya Family Safari offers the best of Kenya, taking you on a captivating and magical journey through the jewel of East Africa, with something special for the whole family. On your Kenya family holiday see rolling golden savannahs, stampedes of antelope, Lions roaring in the twilight, Masai warriors tending to their cattle and dense forested areas teeming with birds and rare wildlife.

Tickle the velvety soft trucks of Elephants at the Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage and admire rare Rothschild Giraffes at the Langatta Giraffe Centre in Nairobi before travelling to the peak of Mount Kenya, to roam the Sweet Waters Reserve, stopping to visit the Rhino Sanctuary in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Visit the Great Rift Valley soda Lakes of Naivasha and Nakuru, watching hundreds of Pink flamingos. Enjoy High Tea at Joy Adamson's Elsamere followed by a river safari on Lake Naivasha.

Day 1: Nairobi

Day 2: mount kenya/sweetwaters wildlife reserve.

kenya safari and beach holiday combination

Begin your Kenya wildlife safari experience at Daphne Sheldrick's accomplished Elephant Sanctuary. Admire their playful nature and experience a close up encounter with Africa's giants. We move on to the Langatta Giraffe Sanctuary to see the rare and decreasing Rothschild Giraffe. In the afternoon we head on towards superb Mount Kenya (5199 m), the second highest mountain in Africa.

You will have the late afternoon free to enjoy a self-guided walk in the forest around the base of Mount Kenya, known for its prolific bird life and black and white Colobus monkeys.

Day 3: Mount Kenya/Sweetwaters Wildlife Reserve

kenya safari and beach holiday combination

On this day your Kenya wildlife safari truly begins, after breakfast revel in your first game drive in the Sweetwater's Reserve, stopping to visit the Rhino Sanctuary in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which has been instrumental in saving the highly endangered Black Rhino. Visit the Chimpanzee sanctuary which is an ideal opportunity to learn more about these incredible animals.

Return to camp and enjoy a cultural talk with Masai warriors, learning about their customs and nomadic way of life and watch as they perform a fascinating traditional dance.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru

kenya safari and beach holiday combination

Day 5: Lake Naivasha

Day 6: lake naivasha.

kenya safari and beach holiday combination

In the morning embark on a boat safari on the lake, cruising along the shimmering surface, searching for hippos and other rare creatures along the edge of the lake. On this afternoon of your Kenya family safari you can enjoy a guided nature walk. The lake is a swamp area of spectacular scenery with good opportunities for game and bird watching. Experiencing a natural habitat by foot is probably one of the best ways to get close to nature and submerse yourself into the environment.

Day 7: Masai Mara National Reserve

kenya safari and beach holiday combination

Today you will head south-west to the next destination, the Masai Mara - arguably one of the finest game reserves in Africa. Set out for a late afternoon game drive in the park. The Mara is known for its rolling green plains and riverine woodlands. The jewel in Africa's crown the Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife and is the site of the famous Wildebeest Migration. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park, as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra, cheetah and leopard.

Day 8: Masai Mara National Reserve

Perhaps spend your evening on a Tamarind Dhow cruise on a traditional dhow and enjoy the perfect combination of good food, music and romantic atmosphere on this leisurely cruise in Mombasa Old Harbour.

5 Secret Safari And Beach Holiday Combinations

Miavana beach white sands Madagascar safari and beach combinations

Look on a map and it’s clear that Kenya and Tanzania should be the top safari and beach holiday destinations. They’re renowned for their wildlife – it’s even said that Kenya was where the safari holiday was invented – and both have Indian Ocean coastlines. But not everyone wants the obvious, and at certain times of year you’ll get rained on in these countries. So where else do we plan bush and beach holidays that you might not have thought of.

Zambia and Lake Malawi

Luwi Bushcamp hippo on a walking safari, South Luangwa Zambia

Pods of hippos on a walking safari at Luwi Bushcamp, South Luangwa, Zambia, Norman Carr Safaris

Zambia is perhaps less well known for safari holidays than some of its neighbours. But it has lots going for it with small well run luxury tented camps, well trained and friendly guides, and the chance to walk and night drive within national parks or head onto the Zambezi River in canoes and boats.

Kaya Mawa infinity pool by Lake Malawi safari and beach

Kaya Mawa’s pool on the shores of Lake Malawi, Malawi

At 350 miles long and 50 miles wide, Lake Malawi feels more like an inland sea than what most of us imagine when we hear the word lake. It has sandy beaches, good snorkelling and other water sports, and a variety of properties along the lake shore and on some of the islands.

South Africa and Mozambique

Leopard on a rock at Lion Sands, Sabi Sands private reserve, South Africa

Lion Sands, Sabi Sands private reserve, South Africa

South Africa’s Kruger National Park is roughly the size of Wales and the animals are free to cross into the private areas to the south west of the park, where the majority of our favourite luxury safari camps and lodges are found.

Mozambique Azura Benguerra beach aerial

Azura Benguerra, Mozambique

Kruger International Airport (formerly Nelspruit) is a short hop from these safari lodges and offers daily flights to Vilanculos in Mozambique, the gateway to the southern beach properties on the mainland and Benguerra Island .

Kenya and the Seychelles

British Airways’ reintroduction of a direct flight between the Seychelles and UK from March 2018 has made this safari and beach holiday much easier. No longer will you have to return via Nairobi with the layover between flights this required.

cheetah family of cubs in Kenya © BBC The Hunt wildlife documentary, Masai Mara, Kenya

The Masai Mara, Kenya, famous for BBC wildlife documentaries like The Hunt

Kenya safaris offer incredible wildlife and scenery, as well as a wide variety of accommodation – lodges, luxury tented camps and simple camp outs – and safari experiences – wildlife drives, nature walks, riding safaris, mountain biking, swimming in rivers and many more.

Seychelles outer islands man snorkelling in blue sea with Denis Island beach in background

The tranquil Denis Island, an outer island of the Seychelles

The islands of the Seychelles feature in plenty of advertising photos for their beauty, while the personal service from the small lodges and private islands make this a beach destination to complement a safari holiday really well.

Botswana and Cape Town

Botswana Gomoti Tented Camp lion and lioness mid-air fighting © Dana Allen

Lion dramas captured at Gomoti Tented Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana, Wilderness Safaris

Landlocked Botswana doesn’t seem the obvious safari destination to include in a bush and beach combination holiday. However the direct flights between Maun and Cape Town mean you can be looking at lions on a morning game drive and penguins on Boulders Beach the same afternoon!

Penguins on the beach, Simon's Town, South Africa © Escape+Explore

Penguins on Boulders Beach, Cape, South Africa, Escape+Explore

Many of the beaches around Cape Town are stunning and often have few visitors since Capetonians think it’s too chilly on days most Brits would consider as pleasantly sunny and warm. The sea is cold though, properly cold, the type of cold that leaves you gasping for breath and making excuses if you are tempted into the water. Better to enjoy from a seafront restaurant in my opinion and with so much else to do in the area, the beaches are just one of the things to enjoy.

Zambia and Madagascar by private jet

Breakfast on the banks of the Luangwa River at Chinzombo Camp, Zambia

Riverside breakfast at Chinzombo Camp, South Luangwa, Zambia, Norman Carr Safaris

Asked for a ‘money no object’ safari and beach combination and I’ll plump for Chinzombo Camp in Zambia’s wildlife rich South Luangwa National Park and the recently opened Miavana Island off the north coast of Madagascar. Johannesburg is the start and finish point (with flights here easily organised from most European and US destinations) and a private jet is used to combine the two areas conveniently. The South Luangwa is famous for leopard as well as other predators, good herds of elephant and a river full of hippos.

Miavana setting on the beach, Nosy Ankao, Madagascar

Miavana’s setting on a beach of powdery white sand and a shimmering turquoise sea, Madagascar, Time + Tide Africa

Miavana, an island off Madagascar’s north east coast is a super beach destination in its own right, but also allows easy helicopter access to magnificent forests with endemic species such as lemurs and sifakas.
