Alibijaban Island and Burias Island: DIY Guide + 2 Days Itinerary

One of the best beach getaways near Manila is Alibijaban Island (located in Quezon Province) and Burias Island (Masbate Province). We went here on a long weekend sometime ago, and I’d since then updated this guide to Alibijaban Island and Burias Isalnd including a 2 days itinerary!

For a little background:

Alibijaban Island is a quiet, budget-friendly island in San Andres, Quezon. The name sounds foreign, but it’s a now-popular local destination especially during summer. Its known for its white-sand shores surrounded by mangrove trees.

Just 2 hours away from boat, you can reach Burias Island. Burias Island is one of the three major island groups in Masbate (along with Ticao and mainland Masbate). It’s composed of small islands: Sombrero Island , Dapa Island (also known as Snake Island), Tinalisayan Island and Animasola Island .

Without further ado, here is our experience on the trip.

Alibijaban Island (Quezon Province)

Sombrero island, dapa island, tinalisayan island, animasola island, my thoughts about the trip, via san andres port, via san pascual port, 2 days itinerary to alibijaban island and burias island, budget and expenses, reminders and tips, what to read next:, our trip to alibijaban and burias island.

Travel companions in Alibijaban and Burias islands

We took this trip a while ago, as organized by Backpackers of the Philippines. I invited Hali along; we were still casual dating at this point.

It was supposed to be an outreach event, but another outreach group went ahead of us without coordination with the local barangay, so our group decided to reserve our donations for another community in the future instead. We just decided to push through with the trip for leisure.

We left at about 11PM in Manila and arrived in Quezon Province in the morning. We stopped for breakfast and then proceeded to the San Andres Port. In fairness to the local municipality, the San Andres port was clean and well maintained.

Alibijaban Island was waiting just 30 minutes of boat ride away from the port.

Alibijaban is a small island located in San Andres, Quezon Province. At over 400 hectares in size, it’s home to a local community whose one of main incomes is tourism. The island is blessed with stretches of fine white sand and lush mangroves.

There are homestays and cottages open to tourists staying in the island.

Mangrove in Alibijaban, Quezon

When we arrived, the caretakers led us to a large open cottage. We dropped our bags and rested after the night-long trip to get here.

It was difficult to enjoy the moment because it was sweltering hot — the kind where you want to take a dip or look somewhere else with more breeze but the sun was too harsh and it makes you too tired to move.

We were slightly invigorated after having a lunch meal of freshly cooked fish. Hali and I decided to go to the beach.

The beach in Alibijaban was beautiful but wasn’t good for swimming. It was low tide so we could only walk shin-deep in the water. Also, there were a lot of starfishes and sea urchins in the sand. There was an area a little further which was better for swimming, but we didn’t go there.

I was a little disappointed. There was too much expectation built up from seeing the island in social media, but we wanted a place where we could enjoy a proper swim.

Allibijaban Island mangrove

For the rest of the day, we walked around the island and took photos of the beach area.

Shells in Alibijaban beach

As sunset came, Hali prepared the camera for some photo-op.

Sunset in Alibijaban beach

Due to the sudden change of plans, some of us weren’t able to bring tents, including us. Hali and I slept in the exposed cottage. During the night, my skin served as fodder for niknik (sand flies). I woke up with red spots all over the body. Hali was miraculously spared. (Can someone explain to me why sand flies favor other people and ignore the rest?) I had since included insect repellent in my must-bring items for out-of-town beach trips.

The morning was better and a refreshing sunrise greeted us. It was time to island hop to Burias Island in Masbate, about 2 hours away from the island.

Burias Island (Masbate Province)

Burias Island is one of the three main islands in Mabaste. Currently, it’s a favorite island hopping destination especially of tourists in Manila.

It’s composed of several islets, including Sombrero Island, Dapa Island, Tinalisayan Island and Animasola Island.

At the time of our trip, it was still a relatively unknown spot. We only scheduled a visit to Sombrero Island and Dapa Island. However, I’ve included the other must-see islands in Burias Island for your reference.

Beach in Sombrero island, Masbate

Sombrero Island is a private island located on the western tip of Burias Island. As we alighted the boat, a caretaker came to us to offer open cottages in the resort for day use. The resort is located along a stretch of white-sand beach with dazzling-blue water, which any beach-goers will love. There is also a long sandbar that forms a natural pool.

At the end of the island, you can see the sombrero (hat)-shaped islet which the island is named after.

The caretaker told us that the islet was once connected to the island, until sands were mined for transport to Boracay . He also told us that it’s possible to swim across to the islet, but for safety reasons, I think it’s best to get a boat.

Sombrero island in Burias, Masbate

Hali and I were happy that we’d included an island hopping activity on our trip. Unlike in Alibijaban Island, the beach here was perfect for swimming. I swam near the shore, while Hali snorkeled and swam alongside schools of small fishes. We also walked around — the island is small so you can explore it in under an hour.

The caretaker cooked us fresh fish for lunch for a free. Afterwards, we went to our next stop in the island hopping tour.

Pulong Dapa Island, part of Burias islands

Dapa Island (also known as Snake Island ) features a small beach cove surrounded by rugged rock formations. The beach here is a little rocky, and close to the shore, you can already see seaweeds and corals. As such, it’s a good place for snorkeling. In particular, you can see schools of glowing blue fishes.

You can also climb up the rock formations to enjoy an overview of the island.

Pulong dapa island. Masbate

There was a series of small “caves” inaccessible to us. Hali took a snap before we left the island.

Cave formation in Pulong Dapa island, Masbate

Back on the boat, we passed by a huge fishing boat that gave us a large basin for free. I read somewhere that it’s a tradition among fishing boats to give some of their haul to boatmen who are less lucky in their catch. I’m touched by the generosity of the locals here in Masbate.

This is the last island we’ve visited, but I’ve included the other islands you can visit in Burias group of islands.

Tinalisayan Island in Burias group of islands, Masbate

Tinalisayan Island is a favorite stop during island hopping tours in Burias Island. During low tide, you can see a picturesque sand bar surrounded by bluish water.

It’s best to visit Tinalisayan Island from morning until lunch time.

Animasola Island in Burias group of islands, Masbate

Animasola Island is known for its remarkable rock formations. In particular, at the eastern end of the island, you can see a giant rock formation with wavy lines. This piece is made up of sedimentary rocks which formed a pattern over the years.

Currently, tourists are not allowed to climb up the rock formation but you can still take photos in the ground. You can also take a swim at the natural pools found at the back of the island.

I enjoyed this weekend trip with Hali and the rest of our group.

However, I will be honest. Alibijaban Island has its charm, but there’s too much hype built around it. I know a few people who’d been here a couple of times already and love it. For me though, one visit is enough. Seeing the beach and mangroves was nice, but the beach area was mostly shallow and filled with sea urchins and our 2 nights were filled with bites from sand flies. The sand flies are now a humorous topic among us, but it’s not something I would want to experience again.

On the other hand, I enjoyed our island hopping tour in Burias Island in Masbate. I’d love to go back here again, in particular to explore the rest of its islands and whatever else the province offers.

It’s no wonder that it’s now one of the popular summer destinations in Luzon.

How to get here

From Manila, there are 2 options for the jump-off point to island hopping: San Andres in Quezon or San Pascual in Masbate.

San Andres is about 7-8 hours away from Manila. San Andres Port is the common jump-off point to Alibijaban Island and Burias Island.

Here are the commute directions:

  • From Alabang (Starmall) or Cubao, ride a bus bound for San Andres, Quezon (about P450-500 per person).
  • From the terminal, walk or ride a padyak (side car) to San Andres Port. Once in San Andres Port, register in the tourism office first.
  • From San Andres Port, you can either take a motorized banca to Alibijaban Island only (P50 per person, 30-45 minutes) OR charter a private boat for Alibijaban only or island hopping to both Alibijaban Island and Burias Island.

Note : If you’re bringing a car, there is a parking lot in San Andres Port where you can leave your vehicle overnight.

Another option is San Pascual via Naga.

  • From Cubao, ride a bus bound for Naga City (P700-1000 per person, 8-9 hours).
  • From the terminal, take a tricycle to the north-bound terminal and then ride a jeep or van to Pasacao (P70 per peson, 45 minutes).
  • From Pasacao, ride a ferry to San Pascual in Burias Island (2 hours, about P130 per person). Once in San Pascual, register at the tourism office.
  • Charter a boat for island hopping.

Here’s a sample 2 days itinerary for Alibijaban and Burias islands.

From San Andres Port, the ideal start of island hopping tour is Animasola Island, which is the furthest island (2-3 hours away), and then the rest of the islands in Masbate.

You may choose to stay overnight in either Sombrero Island or Alibijaban Island.

Here are the current rates ( Updated as of 2020 ).

Boat rates from San Andres Port:

  • Boat to Alibijaban only: P1500 (good up to 10 people)
  • Boat to Burias Island only: P3000 for 3 islands (Animasola, Tinalisayan, and Sombrero) + P500 each island added (Dapa, Arena, Templo, Taguingui, and Busing)
  • Boat to Alibijaban and Burias Island: P9000 (good up to 10 people)

Fees in Alibijaban Island:

  • Entrance fee: P100 per person
  • Tent rental: P200 (good up to 2 pax)
  • Room for overnight stay: P700-1000 (good up to 2-3 pax)

Fees in Burias Island:

  • Animasola Island: Entrance fee – P20 per person
  • Tinalisayen Island: Entrance fee – P50 per person
  • Sombrero Island: Entrance fee – P80 per pereson
  • Dapa Island: None

For hassle-free travel, you can easily find packaged joiner tours in Facebook. As of 2020, joiner tours for Alibijaban and Burias islands are priced at about P3000 per person.

  • Commuting to either port may be a hassle. I highly suggest going in a group so you can charter a private van for transport or join a packaged tour to Alibijaban Island and Burias Island.
  • If you don’t have a pre-arranged meal setup, you can buy ingredients in San Andres Market and have it cooked for you in the island for a fee. You may also buy fresh catch from the island locals.
  • Bring aqua shoes for protection. There are sea urchins in Alibijaban Island, as well as Animasola Island and Tinalisayan Island.
  • Bring insect repellent, especially if you plan to stay overnight in Alibijaban Island.
  • You can also explore other parts of San Pascual in Masbate as side tours if you still have time.

Katherine Cortes

Saan po ba kayo manggagaling? Mas okay po contact-in niyo na lang tourism center and mag-advanced booking if weekends kayo pupunta.

Hello how is the network signal there?

Alibijaban has good signal. The islands in Burias have unreliable/no mobile signal, but you can get good signal in the mainland.

Alecka siao

Hi kat, were going to visit alibijaban x burias this coming holyweek.. may cellphone signal kaya sa area? 🙂

Follow up question Kat, where in San Andres did you guys parked your car? Can you recommend pls. Thanks.

Hi Ariene, I honestly can’t remember. I think your best bet would be to ask around once you’re there. 🙂 Please do update us!

We’ve been there last year, you can park your car at port.

Hi Kat, if we bring private car in San Andres port any idea if there’s a parking lot that we can leave our car for a night?

Hi Ariene. Yes. We brought a private van ourselves. 🙂

Burias island is in my list thank you for sharing. the water its clear and like the serene of the island specially in remote one.

Last year I visited this place too. Mine is still with uneven tan. I am a big beaching person too. 😉

The sombrero and pulong dapa islands look stunning. Truly, Philippines has the best islands in all of Southeast asia

Amazing Life Daily

I agree, Tamz. For someone like me who has been around, and I do mean around, I am still discovering more places that I have never been to, much less heard of. Truly, our country has countless destinations that even for us who live here, are just hearing about.

Nadtja Villaver

Glad I had the chance to read your post. I’m from Bicol but I poor me, I haven’t been to Masbate. I should go to Masbate soon to see and experience this too. How much did you spent for the Masbate trip? I didn’t know that Masbate is just a 2-hr boat trip from Quezon. Thanks for sharing!

Mirriam (Mirriam Dictionary)

the name of the place does sound foreign. I have relatives in Quezon. How do I not know this place? hahaha I should have a serious talk with my dad lol thanks for sharing this one. The place looks fantastic!

I hadn’t heard of these islands before. I really loved to read your article. Aside from the sand flies, it sound very nice to me. I’m from the Netherlands, I see these kind of islands rarely :). Love to see them in your article. Makes me want to go to a sunny Island. The fresh cooked fish sounds amazing. And I really love the selfie you made at Sombrero island, looks great!

Thanks Carola! It’s one of our first selfies together so it’s a favorite of mine. 🙂

haven’t heard of this haven in Quezon! Looks so serene! Great that it is not as commecialized as other beaches so that you are really one with nature. How much was your total spend when you went there?

Our budget was less than P2500. Nowadays there’s a lot of tours for Alibijaban and Burias islands for less than P3000. 🙂

Rowena Rose Conde

I love the sunset. This is the first time that I have heard alibijaban island. The place looks calm and great place to relax with

Hali is a good photographer, the photos bring life to your story. The places you visited seems to be a nice escape from the urban jungle– and just enjoy nature and fresh foods. I guess the only downside are the sea urchins. I got stung by one when I walked thru a low-tide beach, and it took about three weeks before it was completely healed.

Aww, really? I didn’t know it takes that long to heal. My friend got stung once and it just took several minutes for the pain to subside. Anyway, I still don’t like swimming in areas with sea urchins which is why I liked our trip in Burias islands better than Alibijaban island.

Roselle C Toledo

Haven’t heard of this place in Quezon. The beach is very beautiful. I would love to go there but when I read about the travel time — 10 hours! I dunno if my back can endure long hours sitting down. Any idea how much it will cost to hire a van? The 8k is for the boat only, right?

Hi Roselle! Yes, the 8k is only for the boat. No idea how much is the cost of van rental, sorry. 🙂

Me-An Clemente

I’ve always heard of Burias of my mom and how they have lots of sandbars, but I still haven’t really visited it yet. Hopefully, once I resign from my job, she’ll bring me to her hometown and we get to explore the islands she’s talking of including the islands you’ve featured.

Truly, Sombrero island and the rock formations in Pulong Dapa island really sparked my interest in going to Masbate. Thank you for sharing 🙂

My father is from Masbate as well. 🙂 He was surprised to know I already visited his hometown haha it slipped off my mind.

oh wow, that’s a great place!!! ♥ I know someone who lives in Burias Island but I’ve never been there. There are so many wonderful spots to visit in the PH!

mskathykenny

I love this posts because you really let me see the view. I hate travel posts where it’s selfies everywhere haha. It does look like a charming place and definitely worth a visit.

Oh. Haha. I know what you mean. 🙂

Hi, may I ask for the itinerary and budget list? And yung 2k na budget niyo, kasama na yung sa burias island? Also confused ako dun sa 8,000 RT sorry. Thank you. 🙂

Hi, our itinerary is like this:

Day 0 – ETD Manila Day 1 – Arrival in Alibijaban, pitch tents, explore Day 2 – Island hopping in Burias islands Day 3 – ETD Alibijaban to Manila

There are other islands in Masbate that you can include in your itinerary such as Animasola and Tinalisayan Islands.

Yes, budget mentioned covers all-in expenses.

P8,000 is the rate we paid for the boat to Alibijaban and back and island hopping in Burias islands. 🙂

Uy, thank you very much for the quick reply! Yung sombrero and tinalisayan islet talaga yung target namin, malayo pa ba yun sa burias?

You mean from the port in San Pascual? I read that it’s 2-3 hours. From Alibijaban, Sombrero Island is 2 hours away. Tinalisayan Island is close by, if I’m not mistaken. 🙂

We’ll be coming from Alibijaban po kasi, the boat you rented po ba also provided the island hopping tour? Here’s our itinerary:

DAY 0 – ETD Manila Day 1 – San Andres port to San Pascual then island hopping or derecho na kami island hopping tapos overnight DAY 2 – Alibijaban Island tour then mga hapon back to San Andres port to Manila

Is this itinerary fine? Can we manage to explore the 4 islands in masbate? We’re fine if hindi naman maexplore lahat sa Alibijaban. What do you think? Thank you!:)

Roda Feruelo

Hi kat. As im reading this blog.. we are literally on our way to San Andres going to Burias Island. Si Kuya Fidel din kinuha namin.. sa Bop ko rin nakuha itong idea ng Burias Island Adventure.. just want to thank you for the tips… we will be staying at Sombrero Island.. hopefully no sand flies please..

Hi Roda! Bring insect repellents na lang to be safe, the sand flies’ bites lasted for weeks in our case, they were really itchy. There are other islands in Burias like Tinalisayan, perhaps you can island hop in those as well. 🙂

Burias Island: Your Travel Guides, Tips & Advice, Best Travel Information

This post was most recently updated on January 4th, 2018

With its archipelagic state and diverse features, Philippines offers numerous world-class beaches with fine white sand and pristine blue water such as Boracay, El Nido, Siargao and the like. These beaches, however, are already populous especially during the summer season. You will also have to spend on expensive hotel reservation fees and exclusive tour packages when you want to go to these popular destinations. On the other hand, if you really want to experience and see a place that also features a majestic scenery, to swim in unspoiled crystal clear beaches, to just chill under the sun, and to lay down in white sand under a sea of stars, Burias Island is, without a doubt, the perfect place to be! It is indeed a paradise where you can actually escape from city stress, relax and enjoy the calmness of the ocean by just appreciating such God-given beauty.

Burias Island, located in the Town of San Pascual, is one of the three major islands of Masbate Province. The island is surrounded by the following bodies of water – Ragay Gulf, Burias Pass and Sibuyan Sea which make fishery a main livelihood to the communities.  Since Burias is a new spot to be explored by travelers, the local tourism has been fast growing ever since. It has become an alternative source of livelihood for the fishermen. The usual tour, offered by local fishermen, covers five (5) main islets which are visited by the tourists:

Animasola Island

Animasola Island is one of the major destinations in Burias Island. It is a tiny islet located at Northern east side of San Pascual. You can circle and go around the island in just a few minutes. The unique features of the islet are its rock formations besides the fact that the shore of the beach is white sand with tiny rocks. However, you may want to walk the shore with slippers on since during the summer season, the heat is intense that the sand can actually hurt your bare feet.

Snake Island or Islang Dapa

Snake Island is the second main attraction that has also distinct features than the latter. Its name came from the fishermen’s local knowledge that the islet is surrounded by sea snakes. On the other hand, this island is also called Islang Dapa because it is a flat island with rough platform. One should be careful when going to the top area of this island since the actual platform has sharp edges that may possibly cut your skin. Because the islet is elevated, one of the main activities here, and if you’re brave enough, is to cliff dive but make sure that you wear your life vest if you don’t know how to swim.

Tinalisayan Island/Sand Bar

Tinalisayan Island, found in the east off-coast of San Pascual, is one of the most awaited destinations in the whole Burias Island experience due to its special feature, the “Sand Bar”. The sedimentary boulder which appears during low tides and forms a sand bar is a long-stretched platform of pure white sand. Adding up to the beauty of Tinalisayan is the crystalline waters that surround the said islet.

Sombrero Island

Sombrero Island, famous for its shape that resembles a hat, is usually the last stop for day one of the Burias Tour. Since the island is privately-owned and has the largest land area among the islands of Burias, it is considered as the hub of overnight travelers. The island has several bahay kubo which you can rent for 2500 per night and cottages for as low as 700 php. You may also choose to bring your own tent and pay for a much cheaper price. You can do so much activities in this islet – unlimited swimming, star gazing, lighting a bonfire, and all night chitchat with your friends.

Alibijaban Island

Alibijaban Island, located in the southwestern end of Ragay Gulf is a low-lying island that has unbelievable variety of bird species and is surrounded with a diverse marine habitat.  It is, perhaps, part of the tour itinerary because it showcases abundant mangrove trees that cover the island. Unlike the four islets mentioned, Alibijaban is not a part of San Pascual, Masbate but of San Andres, Quezon. The coastal formations the island features are white sand with rocky shores, and a bluish green sea water.

TIPS ON HOW TO ENJOY YOUR OVERNIGHT STAY AT BURIAS ISLAND:

  • Best time to go to Burias Island is during the dry season (February to June).
  • Bring a blanket or a plastic to be used as a “sapin” when you want to lay down for star gazing activity in Sombrero Island.
  • Bring a flashlight.
  • Be sure to secure cash when going to Burias since there are no available ATMs in any of the above-mentioned islands.
  • Bring snacks since the small sari-sari stores in some islands offer limited food items and are a little bit pricey.
  • Enjoy your summer vacation in Burias Island with your family, friends or someone very near and dear to your heart!

HOW TO GET TO BURIAS ISLAND:

The Philipines are high up on my list, it’s pretty much the only place where I haven’t been to in SEA. I would love to visit the Burias islands sometime. That rock is so intriguing.

The Philippines are definitely on my list, and these pix just look so appealing! Thanx – and happy travels.

That sample itinerary is fantastic. I’d love to visit Animasola Island for the rock formations and also the sombrero island. The Philippines is so high up on my list of places to visit, I truly hope to make it there to explore the beautiful islands!

Philippines is extremely beautiful. I love every bit of the Burias group of islands. There less populated and mind blowing. This is really a friendship goal I’d add to my list. Sure my friends would Burias too.

Wow thanks for sharing such a beautiful section of the world. These hidden gems compete in beauty and awe inspiring “want to get away” destination with many of the beaches in Florida, Greek Islands and Brazil. I appreciate the options of a self directed trip or tour package. Hope to float Burias up in our bucket list.

The rock formations are amazing; they remind me of Biri and Kapurpurawan Rock Formations. I hope there’s diving there because we plan to visit Masbate soon.

Nice itinerary. To be honest I didnt know about the burias group of islands before. They are just stunning and so beautiful. I would love to visit them one day, and will definitely follow your guide

Wow I’ve never heard of these islands! I will definitely visit when I go back! Thanks for sharing

Awesome review of the Philippines! It has got me interested in visiting. Before, reading your post, I knew little about the Philippines, but now I know how beautiful it would be to visit. Thanks.

Burias Island Masbate: Tour Packages, Itinerary, Travel Tips & Budget

burias island tour package 2023

Burias Island in San Pascual is one of the three main islands located on the upper coast of the province of Masbate. In this tour we will explore 5 islands namely Snake/Dapa Island, Good Island(newly discovered), Sombrero, Tinalisayan, and Animasola Island.  Each island has a unique character that is perfect for amazing photographs. The picturesque view will take your breath away. The powdery white sand, stunning rock formations, crystal clear water makes your island summer getaway unforgettable.

Summer is just around the corner and it’s my favorite season in the Philippines for I love exciting feel that the sun, sea and sand brings. For this year, I decided to join a group of travellers for their Burias Island Masbate tour. It’s not ordinary for me to join group of strangers and explore certain place but I’m not getting any younger so I need to do things I never did before. Given my profession as entrepreneur, blogger and health and fitness advocate I tend to be an introvert when I have a choice but most of the time I need to talk to people due to my business and events that I need to attend. Well, I think I’m ambivert, ehe

I travelled from Pampanga to Manila around 5pm and arrive at Greenfields, Mandaluyong at 8pm, I took a quick dinner and head up to the meeting place. We are 50 persons in the group with different professions, personality and background. I got the  chance to talk to some of them. We travelled to San Andres Port in Quezon as the drop off point going to Masbate. The travel going there took us 9 hours. As we arrived in the port we fix our stuff, freshen up and take our breakfast before going to the first island which is the Snake or Dapa Island.

BURIAS GROUP OF ISLAND

burias island tour package 2023

Sombrero Island in Masbate is named after the iconic rock formation that looks like a comboy hat. This will be our camping site and will spend overnight here. The island is perfect for swimming, the shores are a bit rocky so choose some parts of the island where you can swim freely without getting hurt by sharp rocks underneath the sea.

There are nipa huts in the island for Php2,500/night if you want to have a more comfortable sleep but since it’s just overnight stay why not experience sleeping in a camping tent? Right? 🙂

burias island tour package 2023

We got the chance to swim in the late afternoon, the waves are quite huge making your swimming experience a bit exciting for you need to play with the upcoming waves.

Burias Island Travel Guide: Masbate’s Northern Paradise

Burias

Welcome to Burias Island

For an archipelagic country made up of more than seven thousand landmass, a scenery of islands and islets scattered on azure water seems typical and ordinary. But those who truly love the sun, sea and sand know by heart that each island or islet or beach is different and unique. As beautifully unique as those in the town of San Pascual in the province of Masbate .

Situated in the northern coast of Burias Island , San Pascual is a quaint and laid back coastal town that relies on the bounty of Ragay Gulf, Burias Pass and Sibuyan Sea for their livelihood. There are more than three inhabited islands and a couple of uninhabited ones that make up the municipality, some are rocky, others are surrounded by white sand or just purely white sand.

Tinalisayan Island

Generally speaking, San Pascual is not the usual tourist destination. The town’s infrastructure is not designed for mass tourism and the facilities are not for the high-enders. It is in fact offbeat and raw, uncrowded and unspoiled. But a promise of brighter tourism industry is in the offing with its numerous white sand island beaches that sit atop its vivid water, all in the backdrop of the majestic Mayon Volcano on the distant horizon.

Sombrero Island

Bask in the white sand beaches of Sombrero Island , Tinalisayan Island and sandbar, Animasola Island or Ambulong Island ; visit the centuries-old San Pascual Church , the oldest church in the Bicolandia; check out  Balinsasayaw House , home to more than 80,000 balinsasayaw birds; see the old municipal hall and Spanish-inspired ancestral houses in town; join the fun of Isla Rancho Festival ; and explore more to discover the manifold of surprises that the town offers.

burias island tour package 2023

Hi, we are planning a trip to Alibijaban and making a side trip to Sombrero island and Tinalisayan island. I read other blog that locals from Burias is also visiting Alibijaban island. Is there any possibility that we can travel from San Andres, Quezon – Alibijaban Island – Sombrero Island – Tinalisayan Island?

burias island tour package 2023

You could rent a boat in Alibijaban and tell the boatman that you would like to have a sidetrip to Sombrero Island – Tinalisayan Island. Not sure about the price though.

burias island tour package 2023

Yes you can.. We had our tents pitched in Alibijaban Island and we did the island hopping in Burias Island. The travel time from Alibijaban is like 2 to 3 hours depending on the waives. You can ask the Bangkero which Island you’d like to see first and then the last island would be your last stop for swimming and planned activities. You have to agree with the schedule with the Bangkero as you wont be spending days there, they’ll bring you back to Alibijaban after the island hopping. We went there only last week April 29 until May 1, I was able to get a great deal as the Bangkero was really kind and understanding of our tight budget.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Along with Ticao Island and Masbate Island , Burias Island is one of the three major islands in the province of Masbate .  Reaching the island can be a bit challenging but the effort is definitely worth it as it is breathtakingly beautiful with all its natural and unspoilt features such as white sand beaches and refreshingly clear water.

Despite not being as highly accessible as other tourist destinations in the area, Burias Island attracts adventurers looking for roads less-travelled.

Burias Island Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Burias Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Burias Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while on Burias Island.

1 | Ranches

Burias Island is dubbed the “Isla Rancho” (Island of Ranches) due to the abundance of ranches.  The town of San Pascual alone has 15 ranches, three of which can be easily accessed by a tricycle or motorcycle.  Touring one of the ranches is a great opportunity to take a glimpse of the ranch life and find out how the horses and other livestock are cared for.

2 | Centuries-old Structures

Masbate was once the seat of Christianity in the Bicol Region during the Spanish era.  Thus explains the centuries-old structures still standing up to this day.  San Pascual Parish Church is believed to be built in 1571, around the same time San Agustin Church in Intramuros was built.  The nearby San Pascual Municipal Hall was built in 1911.  Around the town are ancestral houses made with hardwood materials and capiz shells.

3 | Balinsasayaw House

Do you mind living with thousands of swiftlets? The Espares couple in San Pascual definitely didn’t when a pair of swiftlets took up residence at the basement of their house.  The pair gradually increased into thousands over the years.  Swiftlets, locally called balinsasayaw, is a bird known for their edible nest used for making nido soup or birds’ nest soup.  The cost of these nests can range from $2,500 (P125,000) to $10,000 (P500,000) per kilo.

4 | Mapanique River and Bat Sanctuary

Commune with nature as you cruise the Mapanique River.  The river and the surrounding area is filled with lush vegetation which is home to wild ducks and exotic birds in addition to giant fruit bats.

5 | Biton Beach

Biton Beach may not have white sand like many beaches in Masbate but it boasts of calm and clear water.  The beach is open to the public and there are no fees required.

6 | Nearby Islands

With so many islands and islets near Burias Island and the whole Masbate province , island-hopping is surely one of the most common activities for tourists.  The islands of Animasola, Tinalisayan, and Sombrero are blessed with white sand beaches, clear waters, unique rock formations, sand bars, natural pools, and fantastic views.

NOTE: The Isla Rancho Festival occurs annually in San Pascual, Burias Island every 17th May.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys ) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

Typical Costs on Burias Island in 2023 :

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Burias Island.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Burias Island, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

The following are our Top 10 most useful travel apps on our smartphones when traveling in the Philippines:

  • Agoda (accomodations)
  • Booking.com (accomodations)

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Burias Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Burias Island Travel Guide

by LoveEatWander · January 3, 2020

Burias Island is situated in the charming coastal town of San Pascual. It is one of the three main islands of Masbate Province; the other two are Masbate Island (where Masbate City is located) and Ticao Island .

For the past few years, the once outdated municipality of San Pascual, Masbate has gained online traction because of its picturesque white sand island beaches sitting on top of striking azure salt waters. Now, it has become one of the busiest tourist destinations in the Bicol Region.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Love. Eat. Wander. (@loveeatwander)

There are various islands composing Burias but the most popular are the Sombrero, Tinalisayan, and Animasola islands.

Table of Contents

HOW TO GET TO BURIAS ISLAND

From Metro Manila, there are three ways to reach Burias Island in San Pascual, Masbate.

First – via Naga, Camarines Sur

  • Manila to Naga Airport (1 hour flight)
  • Naga Airport to Pasacao Terminal (45 minutes – 1 hour by van or jeepney)
  • Pasacao Terminal to Pasacao Port (5 minutes’ walk)
  • Pasacao Port to San Pascual (2- 3 hours by passenger boat)
  • Manila to Naga Bus Terminal (8-9 hours)

Second – via San Andres, Quezon Province

  • From Manila, ride Superlines bus in Cubao bound for San Andres (port), the farthest town at the tip of the Quezon Province. (9-10 hours). (For a direct bus ride, check out Barney Bus in Alabang Starmall.  Travel time will be cut to 8 hours. Be reminded though that this bus company has no air-conditioned buses. Alternately (but we do not recommend), you can catch a bus bound for Lucena Grand Terminal (you can see a lot of them in EDSA), and take another bus bound for San Andres, Quezon.)
  • At the port you can rent boats to take you to Burias Group of Islands, with a side trip to Alibijaban Island, rate is PhP7, 000 – PhP8, 000 depending on the number of passengers. Just inquire with the locals for boat rentals. San Andres is a 2-hour boat ride away to Burias Island.

Third – via Masbate City, Masbate

  • Manila to Masbate Airport (1 hour flight)
  • Masbate Airport to the Fish Port (5 minutes by tricycle PhP8 per person)
  • Masbate Fish Port to San Pascual (8-9 hours by boat)

Note: The first option (Burias Island, Masbate via Naga, Camarines Sur ) is the best among the three if you are doing a DIY tour; otherwise for group tours, via San Andres, Quezon Province is a better option as it provides easy access to three islands in Burias, plus another island in Quezon which is Alibijaban.

BURIAS ISLAND ITINERARY (via Naga, Camarines Sur)

BURIAS ISLAND BUDGET (via Naga, Camarines Sur)

Island hopping.

Three years ago, before Burias Island made a name in the tourism industry, a boat for island hopping (good for six persons) can be hired for as low as PhP1500, good for 24 hours. Now, the cheapest you can get is PhP3000 for 3 islands. If you cannot afford the price being offered by the tourism office, and you want to try your luck, you may try scouting for local fishermen/boatmen who offer bangka rental/services for much lower price.

* San Pascual Tourism Office can be found at the port. Just register there and the staff will help you find a boat for the island hopping.

BURIAS ISLAND ACCOMMODATION

There are various resorts and lodging inns available in Burias Island, some of them are provided below. If you want to add more, please message us or leave a comment.

  • MSS Lodging Inn
  • Sunset View Tourist Inn
  • Virjen Island Resort
  • Villa Amando Resort
  • Atlaza Resort

BURIAS ISLAND TRAVEL TIPS

  • Only small eateries are available in San Pascual. Should there be any “good” restaurants, they are difficult to find. It is best to buy all necessary items in Pasacao before heading to San Pascual.
  • Bring enough cash as there are no available ATMs in town. Establishments do not accept credit card or traveler’s check.

It takes one hour to get Sombrero Island from San Pascual Port. There are cottages in Sombrero Island to stay overnight and you can also rent or pitch a tent if you like it. It’s called Sombrero Island because of the shape of the island next to it as you can see in the picture.

There is an entrance  30 PHP  per adult. And  700 PHP  if you want to rent a cottage during the day. Expect to pay around  1500-3000 PHP  to stay overnight in the cottages. And if you want to go on a budget bring your own tent or rent at Sombrero Island. This island is the most popular in the Burias Island tour.

The island is small and you can go walking everywhere in less than 15 minutes. We got surprised isn’t very clean this island despite of the entrance fee and having places for rent they don’t clean so much. We were coming from Calaguas Island were everything was so clean.

TINALISAYAN ISLAND

After visiting Sombrero Island we went to Tinalisayan Island. It was 30 minutes boat ride half of the way to San Pascual Port. One of the most beautiful islands with a small sand bar, clear water and white sand. There is an entrance fee of  50 PHP  per adult and Tinalisayan Island was very clean.

If you want to get an open cottage for  300 PHP  to have lunch. There are no cottages for sleeping in Tinalisayan Island. You can pitch your tent if you are bringing and you talk to the owner in the island.

We enjoyed a few hours taking pictures, flying the drone, swimming, snorkeling, taking underwater shots before coming back to San Pascual. There are no cottages in this island but there are tables if you are planning to have your lunch there. It was our favorite one in our Burias Island Tour.

ANIMASOLA ISLAND

Animasola Island has a huge rock formation. It takes almost an hour to sail from San Pascual Port. Apart from the rock formation you can relax by swimming and going around.

THINGS TO DO IN BURIAS ISLAND

There are many things to do in Burias Island from swimming, snorkeling and camping. It’s a perfect place for relaxing.

Camping is the best way to enjoy Burias Island. You can have plenty of time swimming snorkeling or doing water sports activities.

SWIMMING AND SNORKELING

The water is so clear, warm and you can see fishes around. The water is calm and also the white sand is perfect for playing and walking around.

ENJOYING SUNSETS

We enjoyed beautiful sunsets in San Pascual Port. You can also enjoy them around the islands especially if you do camping.

VISIT SAN PASCUAL CHURCH

San Pascual Church is huge and it’s the oldest one in  Bicol Region . During hte weekends is quite busy.

DAY TRIP TO NAGA CITY

We really loved Naga City. There are churches and historical sites to explore during the day. And many options to go out at night. We spend a couple of days visiting Naga City.

WHAT TO BRING TO BURIAS ISLAND TOUR

There is no electricity in the Island hopping. So make sure you bring your devices full charge of bringing power banks.

The boats are small and if it’s raining as it happened to us all your belongings will be wet. So make sure you bring dry bag and extra plastics to cover everything just in case.

There are  no food sellers in the island.

There is  no drinkable water  and there is no electricity.

There is almost everywhere  phone signal in Burias Island . The data is weak but you will get it!

Bring your  sunblock .

Bring your own food  if you are planning to spend the day or overnight. There are carinderias near the port in San Pascual where you can buy food. Bring cash, don’t expect there are ATM’s or exchange offices in paradise ha!

Take pictures everywhere  with your camera.

Take  underwater shots  with the done or underwater camera.

Of course if you have a  drone  fly it around.

Bring your snorkeling mask since the boatmen will not have available. You can’t miss the opportunity of swimming around the clear waters.

Very Important: Please make sure you bring a bag to collect your trash  so you can keep clean Burias Island and as we always do. By the way our little Han never forgets about it and before swimming he makes sure that he collects a bag of trash.

Also if you have a spare plastic bag for the trash you can use for collecting the garbage around. And we will keep Burias Island amazing for the next time that we are visiting! As we mentioned before we found Sombrero Island little bit dirty but Tinalisayan Island was quite clean.

WHERE TO STAY IN BURIAS ISLAND

There are just two places to stay in San Pascual if you go on a budget. Sunset View Inn and Fuentes Lodging House. There is no Wifi but at least you can get data connection stronger for us in Fuentes Lodging House. That’s why we decided to stay there overnight. It’s only 5 minutes walking distance from San Pascual Port.

If you prefer Sunset View Inn is on the San Pascual Port. You will find carinderias around both places and bakeries.

You can stay overland in the islands. The most popular is Sombrero Island where you can stay in a cottage overnight around  1500 PHP . If you go on a budget you can rent or pitch your tent. Open cottages during the day costs  700 PHP .

Dapa Island: The Rugged Beauty of Masbate

 alt=

Dapa Island,  the first island to explore in our Burias, Masbate Island Hopping Experience. Our tour coordinator mentioned that this is sometimes called as Snake Island because of its naturally shaped cave and rocks which are believed to be the home of some sea snakes. Yikes!

It was about two-hour boat ride from our jump-off at San Andres port. The island has a different appeal, not the usual island paradise that we all think of. It has narrow shores with rugged features and rock formations. But once we got closer, we all agreed that the best about this island is its clear turquoise water.

We settled below some cave-like rocks for a while to prepare our cameras and clothes. Eloi also changed her clothes there. I noticed there were small holes on some rocks. I shrugged off the idea that lurking in my mind that time, that maybe that’s where the snakes come out when they want to look for prey. Haha!

I really tried my best not to entertain that! Well, moving one, the first thing we did was to walk along the shore and some rock formations.

Dapa Island Burias Island Masbate

Trip to this island isn’t complete without climbing the top of its huge rock. Be careful since the rocks can be very rough. After some help from some friends and the bangkeros, we were able to reach the top and enjoy its view.

Wow! Looking at the vast sea and feeling the relaxing breeze on top made our experience extra special. Be sure to walk through and explore more, it was also the perfect chance for some awesome photo ops.

The heat of the sun can be very unforgiving so protect your skin with sunblock.

It was already late in the afternoon when we realized it was about time to go back to the boat. I remember our tour coordinator telling me that sea snakes usually go out during late afternoon. LOL! I don’t know if she was telling the truth or it was just her way of making us follow the schedule. LOL!

I think we have explored the island more than expected. We left the island to go to Sombrero Island where we planned to spend the night.

Dapa Island was just a glimpse. It was like a grand opening number of an amazing performance that we were about to experience. A spectacle that is called Masbate.
