Tipasa Roman Ruins, A Unesco World Herritage Sites In Algeria.

Categories Africa , Algeria , Destinations

Tipasa is one of the 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in  Algeria  and one of the most famous Roman ruins in all of Northern Africa.

Roman ruins in Algeria

You will see Tipasa also written with a Z instead of an S, Tipaza is the name of Tipaza city located just a short walk from the ruins, the modern town built here in 1857, and the Roman Ruins is called Tipasa.

It´s easy to get confused, So if taking a bus here, will you have to take the bus to Tipaza.

Tipasa is located 70Km/43 Miles west of the capital of Algeria , Algiers , and is one of the most popular day trips you can take from the capital.

Tipasa algeria roman ruins

Tipasa was first a Carthaginian trading centre (6th to 2nd century B.C.). And one of the most important Punic coastal cities, before the Romans conquered it. The Romans built it along three small hills, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. This was a small but important Roman trading-post during the Roman Empire.

Tipasa is together with Djemila and Timgad the three Roman Ruins that are on the Unesco World Heritage List in Algeria.

The Ruins includes The Basilica of St Salsa on the eastern hill, two cemeteries, baths, a theatre, amphitheatre and nymphaeum.

tipasa roman ruins in aleria

Tipasa is different from the other Roman Ruins in Algeria. W hile the other sites are built inland; Tipasa is located directly off the shore, making the locals use it more as a place they can go swimming and relax by the sea than an old historical place.

Tipasa waterfront in aLGERIA

The area covering Tipasa is not that big, and you can easily discover the whole area in 2 hours. Hiring a guide is recommended. The street leading up to the entrance of Tipasa is probably the most “touristy” street in all of Algeria, filled with souvenirs.  So if you’re planning to buy some postcards, magnets or other Algerian nick nacks, this is probably your best place.

Tipasa,algeria,

This was only one of two places I saw souvenirs for sale in all of Algeria, the other one being in Tlemcen .

If you’re doing a day trip to Tipasa from Algiers, there are two other stops you can do, Cherchell 30km/18miles west of Tipasa, famous for The Cherchell Museum houses that are widely considered to be some of the best examples of Roman and Greek antiquities on the African continent.

Cherchell Museum

A famous landmark in Cherchel is the El Rahman Mosque just across the main square from the museum. Built-in 1574 as a Mosque but converted into a church during the French Colonial time, now a Mosque agian after Algeria gained its independence.

El Rahman Mosque. in algeria

Another place you should visit is the great Royal Mausoleum Of Mauritania, which is said to be the last resting place of Cleopatra Selene II and Berber Juba II, who was the last king and queen of the   Mauretania Kingdom . Cleopatra Selene II was the only daughter of the famous Queen Cleopatra of Egypt and her husband, Mark Antony. However, their human remains have not been found at the site, perhaps due to grave robbery. The mausoleum was built in 3 BC by King Juba II himself.

When the French occupied Algeria, the French Navy used the monument for target practice, So there´s been big damage to it. It´s located 20KM/12 miles east of Tipasa if you do a day trip arranged with guide and driver, it is a stop along the way, but if you’re doing the day trip yourself, so is the only way to reach the Mausoleum by taxi from Tipasa.

The Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania. unesco algeria

Getting Here: There are busses from Algiers to Tipaza town all day long, so catching a bus is no problem. Both Cherchel and Tipaza is easy to reach with public transportation. The Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania is another story since its located on the top of a hill “In the middle of nowhere”.

So your best option, if you want to visit all three sites, is by an arranged trip by your hotel in Algiers, about every hotel in Algiers offers day trips here, from a 70USD dollar for a full day trip.

Tipaza: An Unforgettable Roman Site in Algeria

UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tipasa

Tipaza  or ‘Tipasa’ is a small coastal town in the northern part of Algeria at the foot of Mount Chenoua. The language of the locals is Berber and the town is sheltered by Chenoua.

This port-city was an ideal site chosen by the Phoenicians travelling to the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar). The remains of the period demonstrate the historical importance of the city.

There is little information or writings about the history of Tipaza. Recently, it has been accounted that Tipaza was established by the Carthaginians around the 5th century BC.  The city flourished under the ruling of the Numidian king Juba II and became a center for the Greco-Roman culture in North Africa. The city later became the extension of Caesarea. In the 1st century AD, under the ruling of Claudius, the city became a Latin colony and later in the 2nd century it was a Roman colony.

Tipaza was also a central place for African Christianity. Religious monuments, basilicas, and inscriptions attest that there was once a Christian influence in Tipaza as well as nearby African cities.

The contemporary city was founded in 1857. It is the home of beautiful beaches and ancient historical ruins. The museum’s collection is rich with pieces of the Antiquity and displays fragments of Punic stela cult of Tanit and Roman statues.

Tipaza Unveiled: 7 Must-Experience Activities for an Enriching Visit

Tipaza Unveiled: 7 Must-Experience Activities for an Enriching Visit

Tipaza is the capital of the  Tipaza Province ,  Algeria . When it was part of the Roman Empire, it was called  Tipasa . The modern town was founded in 1857 and is chiefly remarkable for its ancient ruins and sandy littoral.

Tipasa , as the city was then called, was an old  Punic  trading post conquered by Ancient Rome. It was subsequently turned into a military colony by the emperor Claudius for the conquest of the kingdoms of Mauretania.

Afterward, it became a municipium called Colonia Aelia Tipasensis, which reached a population of 20,000 inhabitants in the fourth century according to Stéphane Gsell.

The city served as an important Christian hub during the last centuries of Roman governorship, with three basilicas.

Tipasa was destroyed by the  Vandals  in 430 CE but was reconstructed by the Byzantines one century later. At the end of the seventh century, the city was demolished by Umayyad forces and reduced to ruins.

In the nineteenth century, the place was settled again. Now it is a town of nearly 30,000 inhabitants. The city is an important tourist place in modern Algeria, mainly because of the Tipasa ruins.

Are you looking for a magical place to spend your holidays in Algeria? Discover the seven essential things to do in Tipaza.

there is no doubt. The breathtaking beauty of Tipaza will dazzle you. Like Albert Camus who wrote “in  the spring, Tipaza is inhabited by the gods and the gods speak in the sun and the smell of absinthes  “, you will fall under the spell of this coastal town located just seventy kilometers from Algiers. .

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 5th century BC, the city was then a trading post. It also takes its name from this function, since Tipaza means “place of passage” or “stopover”. Little by little, the port of the city becomes a place of major commercial exchange for the Phoenicians of Carthage. It is indeed in Tipaza that the goods from Italy or Greece arrive. Pillaged by the Vandals, the Roman colony disappeared and despite a last attempt by the Byzantines in the 6th century, the city did not regain its commercial splendor.

Today, Tipaza, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts tourists from all over the world every year, seduced by its magnificent archaeological sites, its beaches, its port and its pedestrian streets. Many artists, such as Jacques Simon or Eugène Corneau, have also been inspired by its calm waters and green hills. An ideal destination to find a little calm during your trip to Algeria.

Would you like to discover this enchanting seaside resort located on the shores of the Mediterranean? Follow the guide and discover the seven essential things to do in Tipaza.

The Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania

The  Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania ,  Kbour-er-Roumia  in Arabic, wrongly nicknamed the Tomb of the Christian, is located only ten kilometers from Tipaza. This cylindrical monument, two hundred and sixty-one meters high, is said to have been erected during the Numidian period. However, the precise date of its construction is not known by historians, who are also unaware of its exact functions.

For some historians, the Royal Mausoleum was built by King Juba II and his wife, Queen Cleopatra Selene, daughter of the famous Cleopatra and Marc Antoine. These uncertain origins also fuel many legends in the country. With its sixty columns and its four false doors of seven meters designating the four cardinal points, the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania is undoubtedly one of the essential things to do in Tipaza.

Discover The Impressive Roman Ruins Of Tipasa & See A Ghost Punic-Roman City Few Get To See

Tipasa may be largely forgotten today, but it is one of the great Punic-Roman cities in North Africa to visit.

  • North Africa has a rich history of colonization, with Phoenicia and Carthage dominating the region. Tipasa, in modern-day Algeria, is an important ancient trading post to explore.
  • Tipasa started as a small Phoenician trading post and later became a strategic base for the Romans. It grew into a Roman colonia with a peak population of around 20,000.
  • Today, the ruins of Tipasa include Phoenician, Roman, paleochristian, and Byzantine structures. Visitors can explore Punic necropolises, the Great Royal Mausoleum, Roman baths, basilicas, an ancient amphitheater, and an ancient harbor.

North Africa was colonized by ancient Phoenicia and then dominated by the former Phoenician colony of Carthage. The Romans rose to control all of North Africa and now there are plenty of excellent Punic-Roman sites to explore across the region. One of the forgotten ancient Punic trading posts-come-Roman-colonies to discover is the once-important city of Tipasa.

Tipasa is located in modern-day Algeria and is one of the best peeks into the deep history of the region. Other excellent ancient sites in Algeria include the abandoned Roman city of Timgad and remote forgotten Roman baths still used by the locals much as they were thousands of years ago . Start your adventure in Algeria with Tipasa.

The Impressive History Of Tipasa

Tipasa started out with humble origins, it was founded as a small Punic (Phoenician) trading post on the Algerian coast. Later it became a strategic base for the Romans as they conquered the North African kingdoms of Mauritania.

After the Romans took over Tipasa, they established it as a military colonia in the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Roman colonies were cities that the Romans moved their own citizens into as a form of garrison to help secure provinces, later the term became associated with the highest-status cities in the empire.

  • Period: 6th Century BC to 6th-7th Century AD
  • Peak Population: Perhaps 20,000

The Roman colonia of Tipasa grew into a city (called Colonia Aelia Augusta Tipasensium ) and reached a peak population of around 20,000 inhabitants in the fourth century. It was located only around 13 miles or 20 kilometers from the city of Caesarea, the provincial capital of the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis.

The walls ran for around 7,500 feet or 2,300 meters around the city and were mostly intended to defend the city from nomadic tribes.

While the defenses of Tipasa enabled the city to withstand an assault by a Berber rebellion in 372 AD (during which nearby Caesarea fell), it fell to the Vandals in around 429 AD. This marked the end of the prosperity of the ancient city.

Under the Vandal rule and their persecution of Catholics in 484 AD many of its inhabitants fled to Spain and the city declined but continued.

Tipasa had an epilogue of revival when the Eastern Romans (or Byzantines) retook the city in 531 AD and ousted the Vandals. But this didn't last and the city was reduced to ruins after it was destroyed by the Arabs in the 7th century.

Here Are 10 Roman Ruins & Structures Still In Use

The surviving ancient ruins of tipasa today.

Today the site is noted for its unique group of Phoenician, Roman, paleochristian, and Byzantine ruins. Additionally, there are indigenous monuments around the site including the great royal mausoleum of Mauretania.

Notable Ruins:

  • Punic Necropolises
  • Great Royal Mausoleum Of Mauretania
  • Roman Baths
  • Three Basilicas
  • Ancient Amphitheater
  • Ancient Theater
  • Ancient Harbor

The ancient Phoenician necropolises of the area are some of the oldest of the Punic world (6th to 2nd centuries BC).

Little or no traces of the ancient Roman dwellings at Tipasa remain today, but the city's ruins do include a number of monumental structures. See the remains of three churches, cemeteries, Roman baths, the nymphaeum, and the ancient amphitheater. The old ramparts of the city can still be made out while the remains of the old harbor are still visible at the foot of the hill.

  • One of the great Punic harbors to discover is the remains of the Cothon, the harbor of Carthage .

The three churches are the Basilica of St Salsa (which still contains a mosaic) located on the eastern hill and the Basilica Alexander and the Great Basilica on the western hill. These basilicas are surrounded by cemeteries containing coffins made out of stone covered with ancient mosaics.

The churches are a reminder of when Tipasa was an important center of Christianity in the Roman Empire.

From Morocco To Egypt: 10 Ancient Greco-Roman Sites To Discover

Visiting the archeological site of tipasa today.

Tipasa is located around 70 kilometers or 40 miles west of the modern capital city of Algiers. The ancient site is protected by three modern archeological sites; two archeological parks covering parts of the old city and the Royal Mauritanian Mausoleum. Tour guides are available at the main entrance to the site.

  • Location: 70 km or 40 miles West Of Algiers
  • Opening Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

The value of the ancient site of Tipasa has been long noted and it has been UNESCO World Heritage Listed since 1982. Unfortunately, much of the ancient city is now located underneath the modern city on the site.

Algeria is a challenging country for visitors to explore in North Africa today, but there are many other great Punic-Roman cities to see in Tunisia. Famously, visitors can see the ruins of ancient Carthage in Tunis and the Punic-Roman ruins of the important city of Utica that once rivaled Carthage in the region.

Beloved place of Albert Camus.

Tipaza & Camus

Albert Camus loved Algeria and mentions in his writing Roman ruins in Tipaza, as well as his time in Oran . Close to the cliffs stands a headstone with the quotations from one of the books of Camus  Nuptials. It says: “Here, I understand this thing they call glory: the right to love without measure.”

Camus says “Tipaza is inhabited by the gods;” And that the gods speak in the sun, in the silver armor of the sea, in the raw blue sky, the flowers covered the ruins. Ancient ruins in Tipaza were conquered by Phoenicians, Romans, Ottomans… Nonetheless, the sun still shines from the raw blue sky over the ruins, and it’s easy to believe the gods still live here.

The most interesting monument from the ancient ruins is not in the Tipaza archeological site. The Kbor er Roumia or the great Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania is 18 km from Tipaza in the little village Sidi Rachid .

The Kbor er Roumia houses the tomb of Juba, the Berber King and Cleopatra Selene II.  This impressive tomb from 3 BC truly reminds the piramids in Egipt. No wonder why, princess Cleopatra was daughter of the Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt and Roman  Mark Antony . Mausoleum is also called The Tomb of a Christian woman.

When I read that Ottomans were trying to destroy the tomb with artillery and French Navy used it as a target practise, I am actually surprised it’s still standing. Unfortunately, as most of the monuments in Algeria, the tomb was a victim of vandalism. Even quite recently kids could still jump on and climb to the top to throw down the stones. Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania lost 8 m. in height and 60 Ionic columns around. UNESCO protects the mausoleum only since 2002. You wonder what is inside? The door is closed and people say that no body was ever found here…

I loved the view from behind the tomb. This peaceful place has a little stand with Algerian tea and tiny table in the shade of the tree. The ticket to the mausoleum costs 100da which is around $0.50. In front of the gate there is a little souvenirs stand.

How to get from Algiers to Tipaza?

Tipaza is 70 km from Algiers which takes 1-1,5 hours by car or bus. To get there you can try hitch-hiking or take a bus from Tafourah bus station in Algiers for 80-100da. From the bus terminal in Tipaza take a local bus to the ancient ruins (Tipaza Ruines Romanes – in French). It should take another 15 min and cost ~25da.

oOne day trip from Algiers to Tipaza how to get to Tipaza from Algiers.

One day trip from Algiers to Tipaza is a must-see, when you have just a few days in Algeria. I bet you will love it. I was surprised how many ancient ruins are in Algeria. Some of them in really great condition. The most impressive were these in Timgad, close to Constantine. Interested in seeing  ancient Roman-period ruins in Timgad ?

What a great idea? So many people head to Rome etc to see history like this but it’s amazing how far the Roman’s actually got to! Plus, I find the lesser known places are more exciting and interesting to visit. Thanks for sharing.

Roman Empire was all around the Meditarenean Sea at it’s biggest extend, so you will have a lot to see 😉

What an amazing piece of history there among the ruins at Tipaza. Would be quite a memorable experience to visit this beautiful place and explore the Roman heritage. Also, a good note on traveling in Algeria – appreciate that.

Thanks a lot!

Love learning the background and history of a destination. This area of Algiers to Tipaza looks like such an enlightening experience!

It was gorgous! I love to see ancient ruins

Never thought that Romans left something in modern time Algeria. Although, I am a bit of Roman history enthusiast – I am more focus on military, not architecture.

Roman Empire was abslutely all around the Medditarenian Sea in its biggest extend

I have seen Roman ruins in a number of countries so it is interesting to see just how far their influence spread. Your photo with the camel in the foreground is an image that I never saw for Roman ruins. I love it.

Yes, it’s a unique building, it’s a tomb of the king and princess

Thank you for virtually tagging as in Algiers. It is such a gorgeous place! How’s the climate and temperature during night time?

It’s hot 🙂

I’ve never been to Algeria, I only saw it from the plane when I was flying to Lanzarote. I see that there are a lot of interesting things to see. I have to go there one day.

During WW II my Father was an officer in the Royal Tank Regiment, which I believe was cleaning up after the Germans had been defeated. In his belongings, along with many other drawing, I found a pencil drawing or a Roman well – in Hippône. It was drawn 15 March 1944.

I wonder if it is still visible?

WHat a story! Thank you for sharing it Keith! I wish to know, if it’s still visible. You need to go to Algeria and check 😉

Algeria is small and tourists are often afraid to move around the country without a travel agency. It’s not as scary as Algeria is great and you can definitely travel around the country without organized trips.

We were lost without internet and luckily we found someone that helped us find the tour guide. The meeting place should be easier to find. The tour guide was pleasant and was very good at taking us around and explaining different facets of the tour. He was nice enough to make shopping stops for clothing and souvenirs. • Y2584NDsb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best experience you will have in Algiers! I did this tour with a friend, and we can't recommend it enough! Algiers itself is a wonderful city, full of contrasts and unexpected gems. But in this wonderful city, the Casbah stands out as the absolute highlight. A place filled with history, stories and wonderful people. I travelled extensively through the Middle East and this is one of the most impressive sights I have seen. There are many ways to explore the Casbah, but I highly recommend taking a tour. I visited the area alone two years ago, but felt that I missed most of it: there are just too many alleyways, hidden buildings and unexpected sights. You need to have someone with you that knows the area and can lead you to that incredible sight that you otherwise would have missed. You can choose from many tour guides if you decide to take the Casbah, but take my advice: book with Vizitina. Honestly, you won't find a better tour guide. And again, this is based on a lot of travel experience through the Middle East: I never had such a high-quality tour against such a reasonable price. Also, there are quite some 'illegal' tour guides out there, which is a risk if you want to book a Casbah tour. Rest assured that Vizitina has all the accreditations - another reason to book with them! They were very responsive whenever we reached out to them, and we could book easily through Tripadvisor. We had Sam as our tour guide. He was an incredibly nice person - even in a city filled with hospitable people, he made a big impression on us. He is fluent in English (thanks to a year spend living in the US), graduated as an architect and also teaches architecture at the University. That means he's very gifted in explaining things, and he knows extremely well what he is talking about. He also knows the history of the place by heart, and seems to know every person in the Casbah. The standard tour is already superb: you visit all the highlights, but talking to Sam about your specific interests means that he will improvise to make sure that the tour is fully tailored to your needs. In my case, that meant taking some detours to show specific places related to the Battle of Algiers. In addition, he gave us lots of tips for great other places to visit in Algiers. This local knowledge helped us find some real hidden gems, visited a wonderful hammam and eat at the best restaurants. So book a Casbah tour with Vizitina! You will see one of the highlights of the Maghreb and meet wonderful people. Read more Written 6 February 2024

  • 560zhihangl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful tour of the Casbah We had a 2 hour tour with Issam, who was wonderful in explaining the architecture and historical background of various sites around the Casbah, from the citadel, to the Sultan's mosque, the mausoleum etc. He took us to a spot with a great view over the city! I am a history buff so had quite a few questions about the Casbah's beginnings and its development through the Ottoman and French colonial periods - Isssam always proved knowledgeable! He was also kind enough to give us general suggestions about food, and what to see around Algiers. One recommendation I would give (based on my own preferences) would be to include more information/ sites about the "everyday" people's experience of the Casbah - the past and present community, living conditions, social issues and other challenges, relationships with authority and the colonial government, and their experience during the war of independence... Thank you again, this was the highlight of our trip! Read more Written 22 September 2023

Vijay Rana’s Kashi: The Abode of Shiva is a loving ode to the city

The vishwanath temple is the focal point of the book and city, with ample pictures of priests, devotees, idols and the banks of the ganges.

kasi tour tipaza

The book takes us into the Kashi Vishwanath temple, replete with action shots of priests and devotees inside the temple, wideshots of the Ganges ghats and the many idols to which these devotees offer prayer. Many Hindu gods and myths are traced back to Kashi.

The Vishwanath temple is the focal point of the book and city. The Gyanvapi mosque-Kashi temple case has been at the centre of a legal battle for over three decades now. Rana details the demolitions and resurrections the temple has faced since the 12th century.  A full-page photograph of a mosque in Kashi is titled, ‘ Alamgir mosque at Panchaganga Ghat was built by the Mughal king Aurangzeb after the demolition of Bindu Madhav Temple’.
