An intellectual centre in the 1400s and a lively university city today, Angers – the historical seat of the Plantagenet dynasty and the dukes of Anjou – makes an engaging western gateway to the Loire Valley. The mostly pedestrianised old town supports a thriving cafe culture, thanks in part to the dynamic presence of over 39,000 students, as well as some excellent places to eat. The city is famous for two sets of breathtaking tapestries, one from the 14th century, the other from the 20th.

The Top Things To Do in Angers

Visit Leau a la Bouche for mouthwatering pizza and equally pleasing views

Angers, a historic city in western France and the capital of the province of Anjou, is full of sights and activities. From touring the châteaux to a unique twist on a botanical garden, to winery tours, here are the ten most special things to do in this charming city.

Visit the castle.

What originally was Plantagenet King Henry II’s fort overlooking the river Maine was transformed over 800 years ago by King Louis I into the impressive castle that can be seen today. Don’t miss the famous Apocalypse Tapestry on the walls— measuring 100 yards in length!— portraying the end of the world as described in the Book of Revelation; a piece of propaganda art commissioned by Louis, King Henry features in the tapestry as a seven-headed monster.

Wine-Tasting at Château des Vaults

Just a 30-minute bus ride and 15 miles is the town of Savennières, the home of Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults winery, which has been producing wine since the 1400s. Wander the verdant vineyards, and taste some of the stellar organic vin that this family-run winery turns out. What’s a trip to the Loire Valley without a winery tour?

Explore Terra Botanica

In the north of the city is an immense botanical garden/amusement park featuring plants from all over the world in habitats ranging from a woodland of living prehistoric trees to an imitation Louisiana bayou. If you have time, hop on a guided boat for the full experience at Terra Botanica .

Go behind the scenes at the Carré Cointreau

Join a guided tour of the production site and the distillery of this world-renowned liqueur , and cap it off with a sophisticated tasting in the elegant on-site bar. The barman is highly knowledgeable, and visitors will come away enamored with the citrus-flavored triple sec.

Enjoy some culture at the Musée des Beaux-Arts

Offering up views of portraits and statues, as well as local artifacts explicating the history of Angers, this exemplary museum is worth a visit. Have a coffee or a bite to eat afterwards at the museum café, which has outdoor seating for sunny days.

Check out the stained glass at Cathédrale St-Maurice

The seat of the Roman Catholic diocese in Angers, this stunning church’s architecture is equal parts Romanesque and Gothic. The exquisitedly-rendered stained glass windows were created in 1451 by glassmaker André Robin and remain a highlight of the cathedral’s decor.

Learn about textiles at the Musée Lurçat

Artist Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) was notable for his single-handed revival of tapestry-making and textile art in France. Get up close with the artist’s tapestries— especially his famous series, Le Chant Du Monde— and enjoy the ambiance: the two buildings of the museum are surrounded by rhododendrons, and the view across the river is phenomenal.

Wander the grounds of Château de Brissac

Whilst the interior of the château is worth a peek (particularly the theater, the old kitchens, and the wine cellars), the real draw are the gardens, which contain walking paths, a 500-year-old vineyard, and an abundance of well-kept greenery.

Get your fine art fix at Galerie David d’Angers

This light-filled, beautiful building— a converted abbey— houses a gallery containing the work of the sculptor Pierre-Jean David, or David d’Angers (1788-1856), who was once lauded as the ‘Michelangelo of Paris’ by writer Victor Hugo. This hidden gem is definitely a don’t-miss spot in Angers.

Immerse yourself in history at Collégiale Saint-Martin

Explore the history museum within this remarkable Gothic church to learn about its past as a collegiate church during medieval times, and don’t forget to head downstairs to the archaeological crypt. Check out their schedule for information on upcoming instrumental concerts, museum exhibitions, and more. By Madeleine Bazil Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? How to spend a weekend in Angers in the Loire Valley

  • Guest writer
  • Pays de la Loire

This buzzing city of more than 150,000 souls is highly regarded as urban friendly, full of fun, lively with festivals and street theatre. It’s certainly worthy of its accolade as one of the greenest cities in France. It also has a multi-era legacy of stunning architecture; a history that saw it as the pre-Revolution capital of Anjou province, and a modern-day trade in Anjou wines and liqueurs, notably Cointreau and Menthe Pastille.

Easily accessible from the UK, the city evolved at the confluence of three rivers, the Mayenne, the Sarthe, and the Loir (Le Loir), all coming from the north and flowing south to the Loire (La Loire); the short distance (just 7 miles) between the Loire and the confluence of Le Loir, the Mayenne and the Sarthe, make the Maine river one of the shortest in France.

Historic Angers in the Loire Valley

The heart of Angers lies on the south side of the Maine, and here you will find many of the city’s finest monuments and treasures. Angers is remarkably compact, and two pedestrian days will give you a fascinating taste of everything that Angers has to offer, but three or more would allow a relaxed and in-depth approach…languid lunches and lazy evenings. Located in the Val de Loire (a World Heritage Site), and the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional natural park, Angers enjoys a vibrant cultural life, bolstered by its universities and museums.

The old centre, dating from medieval times, is still dominated by the massive chateau of the Plantagenets, and home of the astounding Apocalypse Tapestry, the largest medieval tapestry ensemble in the world.

The Tapestries of Angers

The chateau, with its 17 duo-tone towers, is a great place to start, one of the best preserved fortresses of its era in France. Housed in a purpose-built gallery, the tapestry is one of the oldest in France to have survived from the 14th century, second only to the Bayeux Tapestry. It was commissioned for Duke Louis I of Anjou, and probably made in Paris over a period of ten years. It is, without doubt, a splendid example of tapestry work, but, if I’m being honest, I believe it is outdone in terms of splendour by the modern version, Le Chant du Monde, a series of ten tapestries that represent the crowning achievement of artist Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) housed on the north side of the river, in the Hopital Saint-Jean, itself a masterpiece of Plantagenet Gothic architecture.

Le Chant du Monde is both a poetic and symbolic vision of the world in which the artists defines Man’s place within the universe. The centre of mainstream action focuses on place du Ralliement, dominatedby the splendid façade of its Grand Theatre, and flanked by shops and restaurants. Nearby the cathedral, dedicated to St-Maurice, contains superb stained glass windows reminiscent of those at Chartres, and is another example of Gothic architecture bestowed by the Plantagenet dynasty.

What to see in Angers

Well worth seeking out, for their novelty value if nothing else are the splendid wood carvings on the timber-framed Maison d’Adam at place Saint-Croix, a listed building that dates from the 16thcentury.

Nearby, at 38 rue St-Laud, the frontage of Le Boléro, formerly a café and concert hall known as ‘Alcazar’ and dating from 1892, displays the effigies of two young ladies, the oldest examples of art nouveau in Angers.

You can get a small map from the tourist office that will suggest an historic route around the city centre, which extends on both sides of the river, and this is ideally to be planned over two or more days rather than in haste. But there is merit, too, in allowing serendipity and curiosity to be your guide. There is also a fairly easy circuit, suited to visitors with children or less-abled people, and marked by bronze plaques inserted into the pavement.

The Jardin du Mail was originally created in the 17th century, but later redesigned, in 1859, to be more typically a French garden. The Jardin des Plantes, however, still has the atmosphere of a small British park, with ponds and a little animal park as well as a children’s play area…a great place to have a family picnic in delightful surroundings.

Angers has culture and heritage and wonderful architecture in  abundance, something it is well worth making the journey to discover.

City Focus: Angers, The Historic Capital of Anjou

City Focus: Angers, The Historic Capital of Anjou

From my lofty vantage point on the broad ramparts of Angers’s medieval fortress, the high points of this attractive city stand proud above the rooftops, an open invitation to explore.

Dominating the Old Town are the soaring twin towers of the cathedral and the bell tower of Saint-Aubin, whilst further out, I can clearly see the huge yellow balloon that marks the Terra Botanica theme park.

There’s plenty more to enjoy in Angers than medieval masonry, but by starting your tour at the castle you can enjoy two of the city’s highlights in one visit.

Situated close to the confluence of the rivers Loire and Maine – where France’s longest river joins one of its shortest – Angers gave its name to the Anjou region, birthplace of England’s Plantagenet dynasty. The bigwigs here were first counts, then dukes, but never kings of France; although the last Duke, René of Anjou, held the titles of King of Naples and Sicily in the 15th century. When he died without an heir in 1480, Anjou was annexed to France by King Louis XI.

Castles rarely pack a more powerful punch than this one, which dominates the banks of the Maine with 17 towers set into ramparts nearly half a kilometre long. Built from local black schist, it is patterned with white tuffeau stone, familiar from châteaux further east along the Loire Valley . Visit the 15th-century Royal Residence, admire the Angevin vaulting in the castle chapel, and wander through the gardens, both inside the walls and in the moat. Then head up onto the parapet for that sweeping bird’s-eye view.

Angers Castle is also home to the vast Apocalypse Tapestry, the world’s largest medieval tapestry. Commissioned in 1375 by Louis I, Duke of Anjou and brother to King Charles V, it is made entirely of wool and depicts the prophetic visions of St John – the struggle between Good and Evil – as written in the Book of Revelations in 1AD.

The six huge tapestries are split into detailed scenes, top and bottom, woven on alternating red and blue backgrounds. The workmanship is outstanding, but I find myself equally fascinated by the story. Originally displayed in the courtyard of the Archbishopric of Arles, the tapestry was bequeathed to Angers Cathedral by King René and it hung there until the Revolution. Considered surplus to requirements, the tapestry was offered for sale, but when no buyer came forward, the panels were put into storage before being cut up and distributed piecemeal. Then in the 19th century, a canon from the cathedral set about tracking it down, even finding one piece in use as a saddlecloth. And whilst few parts were found from the sixth panel – perhaps the first to be cut up and given away – a surprising number were recovered and are now displayed in a purpose-built gallery.

The castle and tapestry are both accessible free to holders of an Angers City Pass (24, 48 or 72 hours, from €15), which can be bought from the Tourist Office opposite the château, but be aware that some attractions are closed on Mondays. While you’re there, pick up a map to the self-guided tourist trail through the Old Town and across the Maine; but don’t set off before popping into the nearby Anjou Wines to discover the local vintages – red, white, rosé and sparkling.

For an atmospheric place to stay in the heart of the Old Town, book one of five rooms at L’Oisellerie, just behind the cathedral. This 16th-century timber-framed property has been beautifully restored by its passionate young owners. Look out for their ground-floor shop selling an array of local products. But do ask for a room on a lower floor if you don’t like stairs!

A CITY OF ART

In the heart of the historic quarter is one my favourite museums in the whole of France, the Galerie David d’Angers, which showcases the work of Pierre-Jean David, who later adopted the name of the town where he had been born in 1788. The son of a wood carver and sculptor, David studied drawing locally before heading to Paris where his fame quickly grew. From 1811 onwards, he regularly sent his studio casts and other works to Angers, as a thank you for the financial support he had received. Further works were donated by David’s family on his death in 1856, and today many of them are displayed in the stunning surroundings of the ruined abbey church. Expect casts of monumental sculptures from public commissions, busts of 19th-century movers and shakers and miniature portraits in medallion format, as well as the plaster model for the pediment of the Panthéon in Paris.

Across the public gardens, there’s more art to be found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts. The museum is housed in the historic Logis Barrault, which was built in the late 15th century for Olivier Barrault, aide to the King and twice mayor of Angers. Highlights include works by artists such as Fragonard, Watteau, Ingres and Jongkind.

Then continue your cultural tour by crossing the Maine to the Doutre district – the name of which comes from outre , or beyond – for more artistic surprises at St John’s Hospital. Inside this masterpiece of Plantagenet Gothic architecture, the Musée Jean Lurçat now fills the vaulted space that was once the Great Hall of the Sick. Leader of the French tapestry-making revival, Lurçat’s monumental work, Le Chant du Monde , portrays his vision of the world – destruction and chaos in the first four tapestries; hope and joy in the following six. Prepare to be amazed.

Terra Botanica is a truly unique attraction. Photo: Gillian Thornton

Just 10 minutes by car from the town centre, Terra Botanica is Europe’s only theme park dedicated to plants. Anjou is a big horticultural region, and Angers will host the four-yearly World Horticultural Congress in 2022. I wasn’t sure what to expect at Terra Botanica, but came away thinking you need several hours to do justice to this unique attraction. With its various climate zones, tropical greenhouses and family activities, there really is something here for everyone. Watch a 3D cinema show, take a serene boat ride, and walk through a butterfly house. You can even soar 150 metres up in a tethered balloon to look down on the colourful gardens, the lakes and the glasshouses.

But on my last evening, I went one better – well, a few hundred feet better – with a balloon flight over the Loire with Montgolfières d’Anjou from their base at Gennes. There can be few more serene experiences than floating above the bustle of everyday life, waving at mini-people below, and watching the shadows lengthen as evening falls, and then touching down as the sun slips below the horizon, stowing the balloon, and celebrating at the field edge with a glass of sparkling Anjou. A magical finale to anyone’s city stay.

a 3-day itinerary and guide to angers, france and the loire valley

A quintessential french valley in the heat of summer, the loire valley took us by surprise and made us fall in love with its wine culture, small villages, and flower-lined streets. leonardo da vinci even chose to call the valley home for his final days. we hope you enjoy our 3-day itinerary and guide to angers, france and exploring the breathtaking valley of loire..

It feels like just yesterday we spent a week traveling one of France's most stunning regions— a place where rolling vineyards dominate the landscape, historical châteaux rise majestically above the Loire River, and the wine is as commonplace as a glass of water.

Welcome to the Loire Valley, the Garden of France , a UNESCO World Heritage site that's equal parts breathtaking and culturally immersive.

Situated in the heart of France, the Loire Valley, known as 'Val de Loire' by locals, offers a glimpse into France's timeless charm. By adding the Loire Valley to your France itinerary, you'll find yourself stepping back in time, immersing yourself in the lavish world of French kings and queens, learning the ins and outs of esteemed wineries, and indulging in the rich flavors of local foods.

French countryside road

Whether you're a seasoned globetrotter, a history buff, a wine connoisseur, or someone seeking inspiration for your next trip, this is an underrated (or dare we say secret? ) area of France that should be on everyone's itineraries. When building a France itinerary, a lot of people choose to head to southern France for the famous French Riveria but with that comes a much higher price tag and a lot more tourists. That's why we chose to venture over to the Pays de la Loire region of Western France and we are glad we did. We hope you enjoy our 3-day guide to Angers, France and the Loire Valley.

So, grab a cup of café au lait and a croissant (still dreaming about those), sit back, and let us inspire your future journey through the Loire Valley.

How did This Region End up on our Itinerary?

A captivating history, tips for exploring the loire valley.

Day 01:Explore the City of Angers, France by Foot

Day 02: A Road Trip to Saumur

Day 03: Fall in Love with the Charming Village of Béhuard

We admittedly knew nothing about the Loire Valley and did very little research leading up to our road trip through the area. Despite our lack of knowledge about the region, it was actually the entire root of why we ended up in Europe for the summer -- and ultimately why we chose France to be our first destination.

We know, it sounds crazy. Let's rewind to catch you up for just a moment.

It was September 2017, one year after we got married, and we were jetsetting off to India -- our first country of a soon-to-be 1.5 year journey abroad.

After a 20-hour travel day, we landed in New Delhi at 2AM to the musty smells of pollution and chaotic streets. Our host picked us up at the airport and ushered us to his homestay. We were in a daze. Our minds twisted from a long travel day, we were struggling to wrap our heads around our initial impressions of the chaos of India, majorly sleep-deprived, and in shock that we had actually made it after many months of preparation.

We checked into our homestay, fell into our bed, and instantly fell asleep. About eight hours later, we awoke to a very boisterous “BONJOURRRRRR” echoing through our two-bedroom homestay. In a daze, we stumbled into the living room to find a French man, wearing only his underwear, looking just as confused to see us as we were to see him.

That's the short story of how we met two of our lifelong friends, Thomas and Mathilde. After that awkward first impression, we quickly grew to love them both and traveled together, off and on, over the next few months and stayed in touch. We promised them someday we would come to visit their home in France. We stuck to that promise and now -- back to the story about our time in their hometown in the Loire Valley.

What we didn't know was that it would end up being one of our favorite regions we visited in Western France. Of course spending time with our friends, eating dinner late into the night in their backyard, bike riding to lakeside picnics, and watching our babies play together helped sweeten our memories, but the valley itself captured our hearts as well.

The Loire Valley, often referred to as "the cradle of the French," reached its height of prominence during the Renaissance period when it became a favorite residence of French Kings and the aristocracy. They built extravagant châteaux such as Château de Chambord, Château de Chenonceau, and Château d'Amboise, transforming the area into a symbol of power and opulence. The royal court's presence ignited a cultural and architectural movement, known as the "Loire Renaissance," drawing artists like Leonardo da Vinci -- who spent the last years of his life in Amboise.

The French Revolution later brought significant change to the Loire Valley. Many châteaux were damaged or abandoned as the region was swept up in the turbulence of the times. However, during the 19th century, there was a resurgence of interest in the Loire Valley's cultural heritage, and restoration projects began to bring the châteaux back to their former glory.

In 2000, UNESCO recognized the Loire Valley as a World Heritage site for its cultural landscape -- dotted with historic towns and architectural masterpieces. Today, the area thrives as a center for tourism (mostly local), agriculture, and wine production.

From the minute we stepped off the train in Angers, France, we felt instantly relaxed and ready to see more of the French countryside. We had spent the last five days in the sprawling metro of Paris, walking miles upon miles each day. We saw the Eiffel Tower, admired the Louvre Museum, ate our weight in crepes, wandering the charming streets of Montmarte, but we were ready to move on.

To explore the Loire Valley, we based ourselves out of our friends' house in a small village near Angers. Angers is a medium-sized city with a population of around 150,000 people. We were surprised at how beautiful the city center was. It has charming streets lined with restaurants and shops, it's very clean and well-kept, and it has a youthful vibe due to a popular university located there.

As for the Loire Valley as a whole, where do we even start? There is so much to discover about this region. If you are a wine lover, it's the third-largest wine region and the area we found the most organic wines in all of France. We found a lot of diversity in the types of wines that are available in this region. If you came to France to daydream about more regal and royal times in history, you will be fulfilled seeing all of the Loire Valley castles. Or if nature and exercise are your thing, biking between charming little French towns will leave your heart full. If you have enough time you might even consider a journey up to the breathtaking Mont Saint-Michel commune just north of Angers but still in the Pays de la Loire region.

From Angers, you will need a rental car to road trip around the rest of the Loire Valley. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, rent a bike and hop from village to village, wine glass to wine glass, and Loire Valley castle to castle. This activity is very popular among the French and it's definitely on our bucket list for the next time we visit.

Explore the City of Angers, France by Foot

We found wandering the city to be extremely easy to navigate and fell in love with winding cobblestone paths, beautiful green spaces, and of course, the most famous site, the Chateau D'Angers -- built in the 9th century. The city of Angers sets the scene for this stunning region of France and is not short on delicious restaurants, boutique shops, museums, and places to grab a refreshing drink on picturesque cobblestone streets. You could easily spend a couple of days in Angers alone, but the majority of the sites could be covered in a single day.

If you have a little extra time or are looking for a very kid-friendly adventure while in Angers consider visiting the Terra Botanica which is a mix between beautiful lush botanic gardens and a theme park.

You will also learn about the history of all the famous monarchies that lived here and see their royal apartments. The architecture throughout is quintessential French Gothic. From a distance, the chateau is stunning and stands out among the landscape, but as you approach the walls, you will notice beautifully trimmed and manicured gardens that surround the castle. You should plan to tour the interior if you have extra time or if you're interested in tapestries. Otherwise, we'd say you could skip it.

Marvel at the Cathédrale Saint-Maurice d'Angers

Hours : 8AM to 7PM

What to Expect: Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, this cathedral showcases a unique fusion of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Its distinguishing features include its twin 75-meter-high spires and beautiful stained glass windows. The cathedral, serving as the seat of the Bishop of Angers, has been an important historical monument and a French national heritage site since 1862. Its rich artistic and spiritual heritage makes it a must-visit landmark in the region.

In general, they have exhibits of tapestry, fine arts, David d'Angers (famous sculptor), the Natural Science Museum, and several rotating exhibits.

Eat at a Michelin Restaurant: Autour d'un Cep or L'Ardoise

What to Expect: Both of these restaurants are classy, elegant establishments for the sophisticated palate. If testing out a world-renowned restaurant is on your France to-do list, look no further. Both restaurants serve French cuisine, so the options for vegetarians are naturally a bit limited. These small restaurants both require reservations due to their popularity.

Autour d'un Cep: 50 euros/dish on average (definitely a splurge!)

L'Ardoise: 20 euros/dish on average

Walking tour of Angers, France

Tour the Cointreau Distillery

Touring the Carré Cointreau Distillery in an informative, fun way to spend an afternoon soaking up the air-conditioning if you're visiting Angers in the middle of the summer. You'll be led on a guided tour (in French or English) that runs through the history and the process of distilling -- with several free tastings along the way, of course. At the end of the tour, you'll join an interactive cocktail mixing course at the bar.

Cost: 15 euros per person

Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10AM to 6PM by reservation only

Happy Hour on the River

To end your busy day in Angers, head to happy hour at Le Port de L'lle. The outdoor bar, located on the banks of the Mayenne, is not only affordable, but it's very likely that you'll be the only tourists there! The best part is that the parking lot is on the other side of the river, so you'll take a ferry across the river to access the bar. Order a local wine or beer and enjoy some farm fresh foods. If you have additional time, we recommend renting some bicycles and riding around the island of Saint-Aubin.

A Road Trip to Saumur

After a full day of exploring Angers the previous day, we loaded up our friends' car and headed out on a day trip. This itinerary was hand-drawn, on a scrap piece of paper, by our friends who have lived in the Loire Valley their entire lives. Therefore, we're letting you know that we're giving you the best of the bes t. We followed their instructions word-for-word and had the most fulfilling day exploring.

Stop One: La Daguenière

From Angers, head east towards Saumur. Once you're out of the city, you'll begin driving along the river, which you'll stay close to the rest of the day. If you're coffee addicts like we are, stop briefly in the town of La Daguenière for a coffee and a stroll around town. These smaller towns are a bit sleepy and slow to wake up, so sniff around for fresh bread and they'll likely serve coffee too!

Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne church

Stop Two: Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne

From La Daguenière, get back in your car and continue on to Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire. Cross the river to land in Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne. We recommend parking your car, once again, and walking around. Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne is centered around a rural estate, similar to an abbey, called a priory. Tours of the priory are available, where you'll learn about 1000+ years of history! We opted not to do the tour itself, but we enjoyed wandering around the grounds, which were overflowing with flowers.

Depending on what time of day you're visiting, enjoying a glass of wine across from the monastery, Prieuré de Saint-Rémy, is a must! Sit outside and enjoy the sound of the church bells and watching the bicyclists ride on by. The bar also serves pizza and is called Le bistrot de Yann & Lau.

Wine in Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne

Stop Three: Le Thoureil

It's this stop that stands out the most in our memories of our Loire Valley road trip. Just a few minutes further down the road is Le Thoureil. This tiny village is filled with flower-lined streets and has an overall calming, quaint vibe. It's one of those villages where you could spend all day doing nothing but wandering around, drinking wine, and enjoying the birds and the bees. Our friends told us that there are plenty of incredible restaurants here, overlooking the river, but it seemed like nothing was open when we passed through.

Le Thoureil flowers

Stop Four: The Sunflower Fields

From here, continue on your journey towards Saumur. As you're driving, you'll start noticing never-ending fields of sunflowers on the right side of the road. The most accessible sunflower field is located next to a campground.

Sunflowers near Le Thoureil

Stop Five: Saumur

Finally, you've reached the end destination of your day trip. Saumur is located at the confluence of the Loire and Thouet rivers in an area of ancient settlement. It was originally inhabited by people who lived in caves dug along the sides of surrounding mountain ranges.

Saumur is, without a doubt, most famous for its chateau that dominates the city skyline, Chateau de Saumur. The chateau can been seen from miles away and is one of the last unspoiled remnants of architecture from the Valois dynasty in the Middle Ages. The town itself is lively with lots of shopping, picturesque streets of white stone buildings, and several squares filled with cafes and restaurants. If you head uphill, you'll stumble upon a series of half-timber buildings that look reminiscent of German architecture. Join a walking tour or wander the streets without an agenda in mind.

Saumur Castle

Tour a Wine Cave

Within Saumur and surrounding regions, twenty-eight different wine labels coexist! Two grape varieties dominate the wine lists -- Chenin blanc and Cabarnet Franc. The region is also a major producer of sparkling wine due to the ideal geographic location. The town is situated on top of a porous rock called tuffeau. Miles upon miles of underground cellars and tunnels have been chiseled underground, providing a temperature-moderated, cool environment that's perfect for storing wines. There are dozens of wineries to visit in Saumur, so you may want to stay a few days if you're planning to indulge!

We chose to take an underground tour of Louis de Grenelle. The tour was fascinating and a cool break from the heat -- plus, we happened to be the only ones on the tour! After the tour, we tasted their most famous wines and purchased a couple of bottles to take back to Angers to enjoy with friends.

If you're looking to purchase additional bottles of wine, our friends recommended Maison Ackerman (cave wine shop). Ackerman is the oldest sparkling wine house in the Loire Valley. You can also join a cellar visit/tour here.

Louis de Grenelle wine cave tour in Saumur, France

To finish the day trip, head back to Angers the same way you came. The drive should take roughly an hour. If you have time, we enjoyed stopping in Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne for a sunset glass of wine across from the monastery.

Fall in Love with the Charming Village of Béhuard

If we lived anywhere near the town of Béhuard , we probably wouldn't be so keen on telling you about this magical village. But, because we value other travelers' inside information and "hidden gems", we're going to proceed. Béhuard , both a world UNESCO heritage site and a French Ville Fleurie (flower city), is the only town located on an island in the entire Loire Valley. It gained fame in the Middle Ages when pilgrims would walk to the Virgin Mary, its small church of Notre-Dame, and its surrounding sanctuary.

Béhuard walking tour

A 25 minute drive away from Angers is a world that looks straight out of a movie set with beautiful architecture, flawless landscaping, and flowers everywhere you glance. The village itself is tiny and quiet, but picturesque in every direction. Only 100 year-round residents call this village home.

From the center of town, there are a couple of 2.5 mile paths that can either be walked or cycled. Both of the paths are relatively flat and peaceful. Just ask a local for directions and they'll easily guide you to the starting point. We spent a few hours in Béhuard taking an unreasonable amount of photos, wandering around, and popping into the small artisan shops.

Visiting Béhuard

We hope that our 3-day itinerary and guide to Angers, France has inspired your next trip to the Loire Valley! If you've been and have suggestions other than those we mentioned, we'd love to hear them. And, if you're interested in biking through the valley with two mediocre bikers and a chatty toddler, tell us a time and a place and we'll be there!

For love and adventure

Château d'Angers

24 hours in Angers

With amazing museums, charming houses, delightful boutiques and gourmet spots, angers is bursting with must-visit places and points of interest for a city escape, 9.30 am: tackling the château d'angers.

What could be a better site to discover Angers than its remarkable château ? Located in the very heart of the city, its 17 towers make it one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in the West . Built in the 13th century by Saint Louis, and then occupied by the Ducs d'Anjou , it was later transformed into a prison. Once inside the drawbridge, you discover its gardens and majestic interiors . Don't miss the room that houses the monumental Apocalypse Tapestry , a globally unique masterpiece of medieval art.

Château d’Angers, 2, Promenade du Bout du Monde

11.35 am: Stroll around the Cité Historique

Located opposite the main entrance of the château, the Cité Historique d'Angers (historic centre) links the château to the cathedral via its paved streets that take you back in time. Rue Saint-Aignan , in particular, unveils superb timber-framed houses . Although most of them were built in the 15th century, the oldest, with its tiny door at number 17, dates from 1399. Many of these buildings once belonged to the Church and were occupied by priests .

12.15 pm: Prepare to be amazed at the Maison d'Adam

Take rue Donadieu de Puycharic , which leads to the cathedral steps, then climb them and open the monument's doors. It is home to a treasure that can be seen all year round, during guided tours that will leave you in no doubt that Angers was once an essential crossroads of religion. Once out of the building, walk round it to find the Maison d'Adam , considered by some to be the city's finest. This half-timbered building, set over six floors , was built in 1490s as an apothecary. It is now home to the Maison des Artisans , and one of its façades still sports a very naughty sculpture indeed...

12.45 pm: Have lunch at Jacques Chirac's favourite local

In 1998, Le Lucullus welcomed Jacques Chirac , who was visiting Angers. It was a real honour for chef Pascal Houssay , who had previously worked at such prestigious bastions of French gastronomy as Maison Troisgros in Roanne and La Côte Saint-Jacques in Joigny (two restaurants with three stars in the Michelin Guide). The chair that the statesman sat in is adorned with a commemorative plaque , but prices in no way reflect this lofty heritage! The unbeatable set lunch will cost you €15 and features dishes such as duck's leg in orange sauce served with gratin dauphinois and pear poached in red wine, followed by Cointreau crème brûlée.

Le Lucullus, 5, rue Hoche

2.15 pm: Discover the impressive statues by David d'Angers

The tuffeau stone walls of the old Toussaint abbey are home to a museum dedicated to the sculptor Pierre-Jean David, known as David d'Angers . The master's work seems to come to life in this exceptional setting, bathed in light from the imposing glass ceiling. It is mostly original plasters from the 19th century that depict Fénelon, Gutenberg and Ambroise Paré, for example. Alongside these are the preparatory works for the pediment of the Pantheon in Paris, which was entrusted to this humanist and committed artist.

Galerie David d’Angers, 33 bis, rue Toussaint

3.25 pm: Discover the secrets of the Collégiale Saint-Martin

As well as being one of the country's best-preserved Carolingian monuments , the Collégiale Saint-Martin hides a remarkable archaeological crypt under the museum space that tells its story. The remains of the original church , built in Antiquity, gradually appear in the semi-darkness. Throughout the year, the monument hosts major concerts and exhibitions that often showcase contemporary art.

Collégiale Saint-Martin, 23, rue Saint-Martin

4.40 pm: Explore the very chic La Doutre district

Head down along the Maine and cross it over the Verdun bridge to get to La Doutre . This magnificent district houses mansions and half-timbered houses, as well as the Ronceray abbey and the Musée Jean-Lurçat , dedicated to contemporary tapestry. There's also an unexpected detail at number 67 rue Beaurepaire : to the left of the shop located in these walls, you can partially open a red box, inside which hides a nymph sculpted into the wood! This was commissioned by Simon Poisson , the owner of the place in the 16th century, who wishes to pay tribute to the woman he was madly in love with.

6.25 pm: Souvenir shopping at Paillette

Instead of a magnet or T-shirt, why not bring back a souvenir made by a local designer ? Cross the bridge again to the rue du Mail, where you'll find this buzzing, colourful little shop , where Lucie reveals local marvels such as very graphic jewellery by Party Pop , screen-printed cards by Delphine Maulion , musical toys by Pieds dans la Étoiles, lamps by Babalove or works by Mathou , a rising star in the French world of comics!

7.15 pm: Enjoy a very tasteful dinner

We recommend booking if you want to enjoy the charms of the elegant Bistrot des Ducs . The chef Kévin Lefaucheux , who has worked at Alain Ducasse among other places, cooks such delights as Angers-style sliced chicken and mushrooms , confit pig's cheek with thyme or fillet of zander served with crushed potatoes with andouille sausage and red butter sauce. Fixed-price menus from €19.90 to €24.90

9.45 pm: An after-dinner stroll in the Jardin du Mail

After your meal, take a relaxed stroll up to the place du Ralliement , the city's epicentre. As well as café terraces, it is home to the majestic Grand Théâtre . Then take the rue d'Alsace to come out at number 10 boulevard Foch , where the splendid Maison Bleue stands. If you look up, you'll realise that this historic monument is decorated with mosaics and gilding! A little further on is the Jardin du Mail . This park, designed in the 17th century, boasts a charming promenade and a romantic fountain , on the edge of which you can take a well-deserved rest after this discovery-packed day...
