Entry requirements

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Spain.

Passport validity requirements

Spain follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must: 

• have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
• have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to. 

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen. 

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Spain, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel: 

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Spain are different.  

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. 

If you are visiting Spain and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must  apply to the immigration authorities (‘Extranjería’) (in Spanish).

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.

If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

British nationals living in Spain do not need their passports to be stamped. Actively show your proof of residence, such as the foreigner’s identity card (‘la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ or ‘TIE’), when presenting your passport at Spanish border control. 

At Spanish border control, you may need to show:

• a return or onward ticket
• proof of your travel insurance
• you have enough money for your stay - the amount varies depending on your accommodation
• a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if you’re staying at your own property
• an invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitation’ completed by your hosts

Using the e-gates

Use the desks staffed by border officers. If you’re aged 18 or over, and airport staff instruct you to, you may be able to use e-gates when they are working.

If you use an e-gate, make sure you get your passport stamped.

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period 

To stay longer, you must meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements . If you’re in Spain with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

If you cannot return to the UK before your visa-free limit expires,  contact the Spanish government’s national information service . Dial 060 from a Spanish phoneline (in Spanish, with English speaking operators available).

Travelling between Spain and Gibraltar

Spanish border checks can cause delays when crossing between Spain and Gibraltar. If you are travelling to Spain through Gibraltar, check the travel advice for entry requirements for Gibraltar .

There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. Do not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge.

Unaccompanied minors

Spanish law considers anyone aged 17 and under to be a minor. If an unaccompanied minor comes to the attention of the Spanish authorities (particularly in connection with criminal incidents or when in hospital), they will be considered vulnerable and may be taken to a minor’s centre until a parent or guardian is found.

There are strict rules about what goods can be taken into and out of Spain (PDF) . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food into Spain

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries . There are some exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods or pet feed required for medical reasons. 

Taking money into Spain

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave.

Jet2 has issued an urgent warning for anyone planning to travel to Spain in the rest of 2023 or January 2024 after a series of strikes have been announced in the holiday hotspot

Jet2 has issued an urgent warning for any Brits planning Spain holidays for the rest of 2023, including October half term.

The airline has shared an update on its website after ground handlers in Spain have announced a series of strikes taking place between September through to January, which affects Alicante airport, a major travel hub in the country. That also means families planning October half term breaks may be hit by the disruption, with various strike dates planned at the end of the month that could bookend the main holiday dates (it's worth noting half term dates can vary depending on your area, so check with your child's school).

A new alert on the Jet2 website warns: "We wanted to let you know that a Ground Handling strike action is taking place on the following dates listed below. This is supported by the Security service at Alicante airport and this may mean potential congestion in security.

"The strike will take place for one hour in the morning and evening, on the following dates:

• September: 22nd - 24th 26th 29th & 30th
• October: 1st 3rd 6th - 15th 17th 20th- 22nd 24th 27 - 29th & 31st
• November: 1st – 5th 7th 10th – 12th 14th 17th – 19th 21st 24th – 26th & 28th
• December: 1st – 10th 12th 15th - 17th 19th 22nd- 31st
• January 2024: 1st – 14th

"Please ensure you allow plenty of time to pass through the airport. All our flights are due to operate at the scheduled time of departure."

It's not the only warning which UK travellers may want to heed. One travel expert has warned of a little-known passport rule that could mean you're denied boarding on your flight, and not just the new rules on validity and expiry dates that came into force following Brexit, although you should still check your documents meet those requirements.

Antonio Fellino, Managing Director and Travel expert at Travel Republic has warned holidaymakers: "Passport stamps act as proof that a traveller has not overstayed their visa requirement, and if your passport has too many stamps, it can lead to a variety of implications including potential border control issues and practical concerns, depending on the country you are visiting.

"This means visitors must pay careful attention to how many passport pages they have left, as some countries will refuse entry if you don’t have enough space in your passport. Since UK passport holders now need to get their passport stamped every time they enter and leave the EU, running out of pages is now a real possibility for those who are travelling on a regular basis."

Airline Jet2 will introduce new routes from UK airports that will start in 2024.

This includes new routes to popular European destinations that holidaymakers can take advantage of next years.

As well as new routes, flights will travel more frequently to popular destinations.

Those flying from Edinburgh Airport will notice the biggest changes with two new routes added for summer 2024.

More services will go to Rome

Flights have been introduced or expanded from Edinburgh Airport to Rome, Malta, Chambery and Prague.

These include new Monday and Friday services to Rome beginning from March 8 and new Wednesday services to Malta starting from May 1.

Weekly Saturday services will operate to Chambery between February 10 and April 6 and services will operate from Edinburgh to Prague from October 3, 2024 to March 27, 2025.

Jet2 has also added additional flights and holidays to popular destinations including Lanzarote, Malaga, Antalya, Bodrum, Larnaca, Gran Canaria, Naples, Split, Tenerife, Verona and Zante.

It has also added extra seats for summer 2024 at popular destinations Canary Islands, Mainland Spain, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Croatia and Italy.

This comes as Jet2 announced it would put on extra flights to Rome for the 2024 Six Nations Rugby.

It shared the news earlier this year and said they would run around the Italy v England and Italy v Scotland games.

Italy v England (Saturday 3rd February 2024)

Birmingham – four additional services to Rome (Thursday 1, Friday 2, Sunday 4and Monday 5 February). This is in addition to existing services departing on Monday and Friday – meaning two daily departures to choose from on both of those days.

Leeds, Bradford – two additional services to Rome (Friday 2 and Monday 5 February), perfectly timed for a long weekend in Rome for the fixture.

Manchester – two additional services to Rome (Friday 2 and Monday 5 February), further enhancing choice on top of an existing schedule which sees departures on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Newcastle - two additional services to Rome (Friday 2 and Monday 5 February), perfectly timed for a long weekend in Rome for the fixture.

London Stansted - four additional services to Rome (Thursday 1, Friday 2, Sunday 4 and Monday 5 February) giving lots of choice for those looking to enjoy the weekend or a long weekend.

Italy v Scotland (Saturday 9th March 2024)

Glasgow - two additional services to Rome (Friday 8 and Monday 11 March), perfectly timed for a long weekend in Rome for the fixture. This is in addition to existing services departing on Monday and Friday – meaning two daily departures to choose from on both of those days.

This comes as easyJet shared it will introduce 12 new routes travelling from the UK to Europe .

Jet2 to start flights from Bournemouth Airport

Budget airline Jet2 is set to begin flights from Bournemouth Airport next year.

The 16 new routes will start from April 2025 and serve tourist destinations in Turkey, Spain, Portugal and Greece.

It comes after the airport recently said it expected to see its highest passenger figures this year since 2008 .

Ryanair based a second aircraft at the site in 2023 and TUI also plans to add a second plane later in 2024, with an extra 60,000 seats available.

The Spanish destinations to be offered by Jet2 will include Alicante, Gran Canaria and Palma de Mallorca. There will also be flights to Corfu and Zakynthos in Greece as well as Dalaman in Turkey and Faro In Portugal.

The airport is currently investing more than £5m in new facilities, equipment and staff to cater for an expected increase in passenger numbers.

Planned improvements include an upgraded security search area, with new scanning equipment to relax the restriction on liquids and the need to take electronics out of bags.

A new information desk is also being built, along with improved baggage screening and an extra baggage retrieval area in the arrivals terminal.

Commercial passenger flights from the airport at Hurn all-but ended when the coronavirus pandemic hit in early 2020, with Ryanair resuming flights in December of that year .
