Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley responds to rumours he’s joining reunited Linkin Park (…and Oasis)

It comes after the three bands teased announcements this week

Sum 41 ‘s Deryck Whibley has responded to growing rumours that he’s set to be the new Linkin Park frontman… or part of the new Oasis lineup.

Speculation began yesterday (August 26), after Sum 41 urged their fans on social media to “tune in” this Wednesday morning (August 28) local PST time in the US for a “Deryck Whibley announcement” .

The post came only two days after Linkin Park also shared a mysterious countdown video on their social media accounts , leading to excitement from fans online who presumed the two announcements may be linked. One wrote: “Holy fuckin shit hes the new Linkin Park singer” while another added: “Don’t tell me Deryck is LP’s new singer.”

Another even joked: “Is Deryck joining Oasis ?” following  the band’s cryptic announcement on Sunday (August 25) at the end of Liam Gallagher’s set at Reading , and subsequent revelation that they’ll be reuniting for a string of UK and Ireland tour dates .

Now, Whibley has taken to Instagram to dispel the rumours. In a post shared today (August 27), the frontman wrote: “It’s been brought to my attention that many people think I could be joining a reuniting band. But I just want to say, despite popular belief, I am not joining Oasis…. or Linkin Park. or any other band for that matter.”

He went on to say that he has his own “tour and book” announcement that he will now be moving to the end of the week.

“I do look forward to seeing whatever both these amazing bands do in the future,” he continued.

It wouldn’t be the first time the two bands have crossed paths. In 2018, Sum 41 invited Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda on stage at Reading Festival to perform a cover of Linkin Park’s ‘Faint’ . Whibley took over the parts that were handled by the late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington and, as the song came to a close, he said: “Chester, we miss you.”

Earlier this year, it was reported that Linkin Park were planning a 2025 tour and potentially looking to recruit a female vocalist to succeed Bennington.

The band have been on a hiatus ever since  the death of Bennington  in 2017, who took his own life aged 41.

Meanwhile, today Oasis finally announced they would be reuniting for a UK and Ireland stadium tour in 2025 .

The band have not yet revealed who’ll be in the rest of the line-up beyond Liam and Noel, hence the brief speculation it might be Whibley, but this week also saw newspaper reports c laim that “no other original Oasis member is expected to join the reunion”  and that “the members of Noel Gallagher’s  High Flying Birds  will step in for the concerts”.

As for Sum 41, last year the Canadian band confirmed they would be breaking up following the release of one final album and a farewell world tour.

‘ Heaven :x: Hell ’, said record, was shared as a double album, with the ‘Heaven’ side featuring 10 tracks of pop-punk-inspired music (influenced by 2001’s ‘All Killer, No Filler’ and 2002’s ‘Does This Look Infected?’) while ‘Hell’ showcased the heavier style that has defined recent Sum 41 releases like 2019’s ‘Order In Decline’.

At the end of 2023, Whibley spoke to  NME about the record and the band’s decision to call it quits , saying: “I feel really good about this album, which is why I felt it should be the last one. We didn’t know we’d be splitting up when we were making it, but I’ve been making records and touring with this band since I was 15,” said Whibley, now 44. “I’ve had this feeling for a long time now that I want to do something different and it just feels like the right time. This album feels like the perfect way to go out.”

He added: “Over the past few years, the touring has constantly been getting bigger and the band is at our best. My fear is that if I start to lose the excitement, we’ll just fade away. I care too much about the fans and what we’ve built as a band to let that happen, just because it’s a good paycheque.”

In a three-star review of the album ,  NME  wrote: “Truly a melting pot of soundscapes cherry-picked from their career, ‘Heaven :x: Hell’ is a fitting last hurrah for a band who sealed their place in history long ago.”

Later this year, the band will head on the road again for  their farewell headline shows across the UK and Europe ; including a stop in London on Halloween 2024.  Visit here for any remaining tickets .

Among other big reunions rumored to be announced this week, Linkin Park are teasing a big announcement for Wednesday and it could very well be a reunion announcement with a new vocalist. The alt-rock outfit has posted a countdown on their website which is scheduled to end on Wednesday, August 28th, and the Danny Wimmer festival ‘Welcome to Rockville’ has also shared the same post, indicating that a Linkin Park reunion could be making an appearance at the Danny Wimmer festival circuit next year.

Rumors of a Linkin Park reunion have been simmering throughout 2024, and it’s been reported that booking agency WME is currently taking offers for a Linkin Park reunion tour and festival appearances for 2025. The alleged reunion is rumored to feature original members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Dave Farrell, alongside a new female vocalist taking the place of the late Chester Bennington. Rumors began circulated that Linkin Park was in the search for a new vocalist back in March, after comments from Orgy’s Jay Gordon in an interview with Wired In The Empire. Gordon stated that Linkin Park were “still going for it,” adding “It’s going to be tough without Chester, but we’ll see. I hear they got a girl singer now. That’s what I heard.”

Following Gordon’s viral interview he retracted his comments and stated, “with regards to this Linkin Park singer thing. I know nothing about any of that.”

However, recently Billboard has reported that they’ve been told from a source that the band is in search of a female vocalist for a reunion tour slated for 2025. Additionally, it was rumored that Evanescence singer Amy Lee was being eyed to front the band’s reunion lineup, however, she shot down any claims stating in an interview, "That is an incredible compliment, have not heard that. No, I have not been contacted by [Linkin Park] or anything like that. But [I'm a] huge fan feel like our worlds, our fanbases are a lot of the same people." Regardless if Lee isn’t the alleged new vocalist, Evanescence and Linkin Park would certainly make for a solid tour package if this reunion ends up being true.

While nothing is confirmed yet about a Linkin Park reunion, it’s worth noting that when rumors or ‘sources’ begin circulating around reunions, and more specifically when it’s rumored that reputable booking agencies are taking offers, it’s usually a promising sign that a reunion is actually in the works. Take Pantera for instance. Back in 2022 rumors and reports began circulated that the iconic metal outfit was taking tour offers and being booked for reunion shows in 2023, all of which turned out to be true.

Come Wednesday, all these Linkin Park reunion rumors will either be put to rest or made true, as whatever the band is teasing with their ambitious countdown will be revealed.

LINKIN PARK and MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE will headline this year's Projekt Revolution tour, which is scheduled to kick off late July. Linkin Park rumoured to reunite for 2025 tour with Chester Bennington replacement as band starts announcement countdown

A mysterious countdown has appeared on linkin park's website.

Linkin Park are rumoured to be reuniting for a tour in 2025, and have lined up a potential replacement for vocalist Chester Bennington.

Bennington died in 2017, aged just 41. The band has not toured since then, following an announcement of an ‘indefinite hiatus’.

The late-great Linkin Park singer died by suicide, having been outspoken in the past about his mental health struggles.

Rumours have been flying for a while that the band would be bringing in a new vocalist, with most indicating it would be a female voice.

This has intensified however due to the band releasing a 100-hour announcement countdown.

At the time of writing, the band have placed a livestream on their YouTube channel, which also features on LinkinPark.com, set to run out in just over a day.

Taking over the role of Bennington in the band would be a heavy responsibility.

Beyond the obvious pressure of taking over from the late vocalist, his unique vocal range (which contributed to the band's genre-bending success) will be hard to replicate.

Mike Shinoda, another member of Linkin Park who would often rap on their records, spoke out following Bennington's death about the ongoing grief he felt.

He claimed that he had even considered giving up on making music in the aftermath.

He spoke to Howard Stern saying: "For me, it just felt like too much. To get back on it and try to do some version of music and also be seen through the lens of what had happened… it was like being a member of a club that I didn’t want to join.”

The band released a song 'Lost' last year that featured the voice of Bennington.

Speaking about this song, Shinoda went on to tell Stern: "It’s like an old photo. It can be bittersweet but to have forgotten that it existed and then to hear it and be teleported back there, that’s a gift."

When asked in the past about rumours surrounding a reunion, Shinoda told Revolver Magazine: "Rumors always go around. People always ask what’s next for the band, and the best answer I can ever give anybody is when there’s something to tell you, we will tell you.

"When there’s an announcement to be made, it will be on LinkinPark.com. If you’re hearing it from somebody else, you can trust that information as much as you want to trust it."

While we are still holding our breath, the announcement is being teased on LinkinPark.com.

Though some fans may find it bizarre to see a Linkin Park sans-Bennington, if the band are confident it's the right thing - fans will trust them and surely lose it.
