Tips for Naming Your Tour Business

Brainstorm a list of keywords related to your business..

Differing destinations, popular cities, cultures and landscapes are all great words to consider when coming up with a name for your tour business. Think of words that accurately describe the services or benefits you provide – such as “adventure” or “journey” – and make sure they’re easy to remember.

Keep it simple.

Naming your tour business must be done thoughtfully. Opt for a concise name that is easy to pronounce and remember, as longer names can often cause confusion for potential customers. Craft something brief yet powerful!

Brainstorm some captivating and memorable words that people can easily associate with your brand. Pulling inspiration from imagery or metaphors related to what you do will help these terms be truly unique.

Consider your target audience.

When naming an accounting business, think about who you are targeting and how the name can have an impact on them. Are you looking to attract a more corporate or casual customer base? Ensure that the name reflects what they are looking for and resonates with them.

Make Sure the Domain is Available.

Once you have a few ideas for naming your accounting business, it’s time to check and make sure the domain name is available. Search for the desired URL on GoDaddy or another website of your choice, and you’ll be able to see if it’s available in no time.

Choose Your Domain!

Once you’ve settled on a domain name you like, it’s time to purchase and register it with an available hosting provider or registrar.

Tips for Choosing a Tour Business Name.

Choosing the right name for your tour business is an essential step that demands thoughtful consideration. An effective name can set the tone for your brand, communicate what you offer, and make a lasting impression on potential customers. Here are several tips to guide you in selecting a name that aligns with your business's vision, appeals to your target audience, and stands out in the competitive travel industry.

  • Think about your niche - Ensure the name reflects the specific experience or region you specialize in, such as eco-adventures, historical tours, or culinary explorations.
  • Keep it memorable and easy to spell - A catchy, straightforward name helps customers remember and recommend your business.
  • Avoid geographical limitations - Unless you're certain you won't expand, choose a name that doesn't confine you to a particular location.
  • Consider the domain availability - Check if the domain name is available for your chosen business name to establish a strong online presence.
  • Seek feedback - Share your top name choices with friends, family, or potential customers to gauge their reactions and understand the impression your names may make.
  • Ensure it's scalable - Select a name that allows room for growth, should you decide to add more tours or services in the future.
  • Check for trademarks - Verify that your chosen name or something very similar isn't already trademarked by another business, especially within your industry.

Destination vacation, hop-on, hop-off, mind the gap, green escapes, city sightseeing,  the landmark tour, the royal route, keep calm and travel on, wander rush, rhapsody travel or my big fat city tour, wrapping up on tour company names.

Choosing a unique tour company name is critical for every travel business. Whether it describes the route, service or experience you deliver, a good name is very likely to increase customer engagement and interest. You will need to find words that truly reflect your values in a memorable way.

In this article, we share some great tour name ideas to give you a framework for naming your own business. You will also find some useful tips to follow when making the final decision. ‘Steal like an artist’ and craft a tour name that will make your visitors go through the roof!

Deliberately misspelling is a great idea when it comes to tour names. You can build up a word that hints the nature of the experience. Adventour is a great example of a catchy name that is at the same time memorable and easy to reference. Whether you are offering breathtaking wildlife safaris or day escapes to the world’s most exotic places, it will suit ideally for your exciting tour.

Get-a-way is a similar made-up name. Short and simple, but still nicely delivering a clear message which is setting up certain expectations.

Another type of name that would ideally suit day trips and expeditions to relaxing beautiful places. Destination Vacation is a meaningful name that delivers a clear message describing the purpose of the tour. It is also an instance of SEO friendly travel name. Tip: Using rhymes is a good approach when you are a bit stuck with choosing a tour name. Rhymes make even usual words sound more appealing and unique, so why not using them to create a cool tour name? Like Sky high or Ray day. Think about the best feature of your tour and rhyme it to craft something different.

Use tour names that have already gained popularity. Hop-on, Hop-off   is a good example of a common travel experience most people know about. It describes a bus tour that follows a circular route with fixed stops, allowing passengers to disembark and reboard at any stop. Fantastic choice of name for those of you who offer flexible bus tours for adventurous travelers!

Use local common phrases when organizing various city tours . They make reference to some unique cultural values reflecting the spirit and character of the city. Mind the gap is an expression every Londoner hears at least once a day. Find the distinctive notions in the area you operate and use them to describe your tour. Mind the gap is the perfect name for all types of day trips in London, especially if they include using the famous London underground.

Choose a relaxing tour company name that relates to the advantages of your tour. Green Escapes  is one of our favorites. It infers the nature of the journey while at the same time sets clear customer expectations. It highlights the best features of the trip and inspires people to imagine the relaxing expedition that the tour offers.

Comfort travel could be used in a similar context. If you can offer an exceptional travel experience, this tour name would definitely promote it nicely.

CALL TO ACTION

Choose a location-based  tour company name that is short and simple. City Sightseeing says it all. You can easily attract people specifically searching for this kind of experience. City Sightseeing Amsterdam  is one of the many examples. Whether you are going to offer convenient transport when exploring the city, or selection of places that will be visited, it will do the job. This name is quite broad and would allow adding or changing some of the relevant activities in the future.

The Landmark Tour delivers a very straightforward message. A tour named like that could take you to an enchanting garden, popular monument, or even fortress in the suburbs. Just like our previous suggestion, it targets a specific audience with clear expectations and travel goals. This tour combines all the special places that one would love to visit when traveling abroad or exploring the local.

A classy name that will be associated with a set of activities. This tour name hints exploring the cultural heritage of the specific region, in one way or another. It will attract people keen to visit everything from ancient castles and historic places to famous museums and houses. Ideal to engage all tourists interested in the fascinating stories from the past. Still engaging for the younger people who want to know more about the history and best-loved ancient monuments.

Are you trying to attract a younger audience or just want to be noticed by people spending most of their time online? Popular social terms are what you need for this purpose. Most of your customers are choosing their next travel destination or experience online. Social networks are where the actual research and planning happens.

If you want to capture this audience, create a name that contains a popular social media expression. Foodie map is a similar example that could refer to an exciting food and drinks tour.

Our final suggestion offers three different tour company names. We think one of the best approaches when choosing a tour name is creating something memorable and unique. A selection of words that sound exciting and challenging would definitely intrigue people. These names are unusual and have great potential to grow as an independent brand in the future. Give freedom to your imagination and it will pay off with an inspiring idea.

Extra Tip:  Make sure the name you choose is available as a domain name. You don’t want to end up with a great idea that cannot become something ‘bigger’.

Choosing what to call your tour or travel experience is one of the most important decisions you make for your business. To a certain extent, the name would determine further performance and success. Don’t underestimate the significance of words and the extent to which they affect customer interest. Take your time to craft an influential message locked in a few words. You will be surprised to find out how much your effort will do for the business!

Tips for naming your travel agency

Types of travel agency names, bottom line.

name for tour operator

Scale your travel agency

Copilot offers tailored travel business tools, including billing, invoicing, client portals, and service contract templates featuring your newly defined agency name.

Picking the right name for your travel agency is an important first step in making your business vision a reality. Your agency name will show up everywhere — branding, invoices , contracts — so it should capture your specialty, personality, and plans to grow.

This article looks at different types of travel agencies and suggests hundreds of potential names in different categories to spark ideas. Read on for insights and inspiration as you name your company!

Naming your travel biz is about more than just a clever name. Your name sets the tone for your whole brand and shows how you help clients fulfill their travel dreams. As you brainstorm names, keep these tips in mind:

Show off what you do

What is rule #1 when naming a travel agency? Make sure your specialty is clear. Tour companies, cruise sellers, niche travel agents — your name should instantly tell people what you do. This helps attract great customers by setting expectations around your services.

When potential clients get what you offer, they can tell if you're a fit for their needs.

Share your personality

Your company name also captures the heart of your business. It hints at what makes you tick - your passions, perspectives, and what makes your approach unique.

Ask yourself: What values do I operate under? What travel principles guide me? You don't need to lay out detailed philosophies. But well-chosen words give a taste of your travel style to hook the right folks.

Be memorable

Being descriptive ties into showcasing your specialty. A name that tells people what you do sticks in their minds and spreads brand awareness by word-of-mouth.

But you also want something unique and fresh. Short, snappy names using rhymes, wordplay, or travel symbols make you pop.

Allow room to grow

While you probably start by specializing, ensure your name leaves room to expand someday. Many travel agents start a niche and then add more trips once they build a client base. Leave space to add cruise or family vacation planning down the road. See if your dream name limits you or offers flexibility.

Check availability & trademarks

This one's obvious but critical: search online to see if your desired name exists. Look nationwide for same-name travel businesses to avoid confusion between brands. Ideally, grab matching URLs, social handles, and trademarks to own your name fully. You can use a website like Namechk to quickly search if your name is available across various social media platforms.

Also, be mindful of any trademarks for existing names. If you plan on starting a travel agency in the US, be sure to browse through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) search database . If you’re outside of the US, be sure to check with your local laws and regulations.

With so many kinds of travel companies, it's smart to pick a name tailored to your specialty. Every sector takes its own approach to descriptive, memorable titles.

As we break down popular niches, decide how to highlight your ideal travel specialty through naming. Here are the niches we will go through:

Choosing The Best Name For A Tour Operator Business

Finding a new name for tour and travel company can be very tricky. You want a name that’s exciting, easy to use but which also turns heads and brings in conversions. That can be very hard to find, especially since there’s a lot of competition.

Which is why you really need to take your time with this and actively focus on creating a name that really stands out. You shouldn’t rush the name creation experience. This is extremely important and it does come with some major things to think about as you go along. It will be worth it if you stick to creative tour operator names, so here are some ways to make that happen.

  • Set your Unique Selling Points

A good way to find holiday company names is to set the unique selling points . Once you have those selling points ready to go, it will be easier to showcase what you are selling and the return can be huge if you do it correctly.

Use that as an advantage, take your time with it and the experience will be among some of the best every time when done right. Sharing your selling points in the company name is worth it. But since you want to avoid having a very long company name, put the major selling point in there.

That’s why you want a complete list, to ensure that you share the right idea.

2. Evaluate your business’ operations

There are many types of tour operator businesses. And you can obviously use a plethora of different travel business names out there, as you’ll probably come across endless lists of ideas. You really need to understand the situation and actively find a way to make things simpler and more convenient.

Doing a little research to find out in which category your business fits in will be totally worth the effort. Once you do that, the experience will shine and that’s what matters the most. Decide the type of operator you are, as this will end up pushing you towards one region or the other. But it will help a lot as you try to make the right decision.

3. Think of brand identity

Brand identity always plays a major factor when it comes to what tour operator names you want to focus on. The idea is to center your attention on convenience and actively find a way to make this work for you.

Adaptability and focus are key here, and as long as you know how to manage and handle everything you will be fine. Think about how you want people to perceive your business, and then adapt to that.

4. Use relevant words

What you need to do here is you need to find keywords for your industry. You will also have a website, and if you have a keyword in the name you will be easier to find. The trick here is to stick to your niche and also consider the location of your tours and the type of activities that you are offering.

That really helps immensely and it brings in front some of the nicer and more interesting features that you will enjoy. Every tiny detail matters and the more you think about it, the better it will be. Consider the tour location, the type of tours you want to offer, and what niche you want: these should be great keyword ideas.

5. Consider business growth

Some would go for a trendy name, but the reality is that trends change all the time. Remember that your business will expand in the future, so you want the name to be adapted to that the best way that you can.

It will be a great opportunity and something that you will enjoy all the same. Business growth is crucial, and you have to prepare for it otherwise there are bound to be problems. The potential of future expansion of your current small business is huge, so your company’s name should adapt to a wider market.

6. Find your rivals

It’s a good idea to check on your competitors and see what they are doing. Sometimes it makes sense to check on the competition to see how they are adapting to this.

Starting is simple, and there are different approaches that you could take. First, you could google your potential business name to analyze the results that come up. Keep in mind that your goal is to take the number #1 position for this keyword, so if another well-known site is already placing there, then you might need to reconsider.

Additionally, you could list your direct competitors . This simple yet important step is crucial for you to find out how your business will stand out from the crowd. That being said, your business name should be different from theirs, ideally, there should be no similarities.

Most importantly, if you want your domain name to be the same as your business name, you should also quickly check this online.

7. Start brainstorming names

Write down a couple of names and see which ones work for you. Brainstorming is all about trying to come up with names that you will enjoy, and that, of course, speak for your brand wonderfully. A simple spreadsheet or will be of great help during this step, as you could write as many names you can think of, and then go through it to shortlist the ones that meet the essential requirements.

name for tour operator

Pro-tip: Build a checklist that includes the major elements that your business name should include as columns. That way, you can quickly review each idea and rule out the names that do not meet your criteria.

Sometimes finding the best travel company names can be tricky and difficult, but you need to have patience and focus, then you will be fine. Focus on great results and on a good experience, then the payoff can be huge if you do everything right as you go alone.

8. Keep it simple yet unique

Since you have a travel business, you want the name to be iconic but not too complex. Walking a fine line between these things might be a bit challenging. But it all comes down to keeping the name unique and not overly complicated.

If you complicate it then there will be problems, and you want to avoid that. Some businesses might adopt a mysterious name with the hopes of attracting more clients. However, doing this could make your company give the wrong impression, remember the golden rule here: Stick to your niche!

Get creative!

As you can see, finding the best tour operator names is all about trying and coming up with new ways to find a name that sticks. Once you do have a list of names, make sure that you test it out with your friends or close people.

Asking for some preliminary feedback helps a lot! And that’s exactly what really matters in a situation like this. You want to push the boundaries and find a way to make this work, as it’s imperative for you to start a travel business on the right path.

Of course, you need to be open to constructive criticism and find a way to make the process better and more convenient. Even if it feels like a challenge, take it and the payoff will shine.

How to come up with the best tour names to attract more visitors

Carla Vianna

“It’s just a tour name.”

Think again. Naming your tours might seem like a quick task, but your tour titles can actually help you stand out, be more memorable, and attract more visitors. Keyword-rich tour names can make your company more visible on Google and help you attract the right audience to your website.

Tour names should send a clear message to customers — on this tour, you’ll be doing “x” — in an engaging way. There’s no set formula for coming up with the perfect name, and if you’ve ever struggled with this, you’re not alone.

In this post, you’ll learn tips and strategies for coming up with catchy tour names, as well as find examples of operators doing it right.

Should you use a tour name generator to come up with tour names?

6 tips for creating the best tour names.

  • Hint at the nature of the experience
  • Consider your audience
  • Make it clear
  • Make it SEO-friendly
  • Try to make it rhyme
  • Consider the location

3 examples of catchy tour names

  • Denver Adventures
  • Sonoma Canopy Tours

A business name generator is an AI-powered website that can help tour operators develop different name ideas. You provide the name generator with a list of keywords, and it’ll spit out a list of names.

Let’s say you run a zipline course in Sonoma, California . You would input keywords like “zipline tours” and “Sonoma.” Below you can see the name ideas generated from those and other relevant keywords.

  • Allure California
  • Flame Zipline

fZD8iLbHRK y0Yr8hdBFOL4vU75tnPRKDGzm86AVHKKgzL V08hED9n elNzhQxoH0l2Q1ajelpORERPp0vC1ugMq89aqbJw9qIGDw0iDs8h6tPJxBc274mshDMBmf4XH QBmlA5sQmmNZmYksGiEGw

You might not like any of the names given, but you can use the list as a starting point. Now, start brainstorming different name combinations that might better suit your brand.

Here are two things to consider before choosing a name:

  • Has anyone trademarked the name? If someone has previously trademarked this tour name, then you may not be able to use it. You can search for trademarked names here .
  • Is there a tour with a similar name nearby? Do a quick search on Google and social media to ensure you’re choosing a name that hasn’t already been affiliated with another company.

The main purpose behind a tour name is to choose the right words that reflect what kind of experience you’re offering. To help you brainstorm ideas , first answer the following questions:

  • Where does the tour take place?
  • What’s the main activity on this tour?
  • What makes this tour unique?
  • Who is this tour for?
  • What keywords do you want to rank for on Google?
  • Who else is running a similar tour?

Let’s dig into six tips that can help you move forward from here.

1. Hint at the nature of the experience

A tour name should correctly represent the experience. A zipline course that takes guests over a tree canopy, for instance, should convey that the experience happens in a forest. It would make sense to include “canopy” or “forest” somewhere in the tour name. Meanwhile, a sailing tour would have the words “sailboat” or “sailing” in its name.

2. Consider your audience

If you’re running a kid-friendly zipline course, a name like “The Death-Defying Course” might not be the most relevant name. Most parents likely won’t feel comfortable with their small children joining a tour with the word “Death” in it. Consider your audience and the kind of experience they’re interested in. Then, brainstorm names based on what they’re looking for.

3. Make it clear

Make sure to hint at the nature of the experience in your tour name. This can be accomplished by including the name of the activity in the title. For example, zipline operator Denver Adventures makes sure to include the word “zipline” in its tour names. When guests read the name “6-Line Zipline Adventure Tour,” they’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Remember that you don’t have to convey the full message in your tour title. Other details like the duration of the course and start time will be explained in the tour description . The goal is to deliver the main message in the shortest amount of words possible.

4. Make it SEO-friendly

Familiarize yourself with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how it can help you rank higher on Google. The search engine ranks your website based on keywords present in your content or the words and phrases that describe your tours.

When someone searches for “zipline tours in Denver,” they’re going to click on one of the first 10 results. Think about the keywords you would like your company to rank for. This almost always includes your location and the activity you’re offering. Then use these keywords to create a catchy title for your tours.

5. Try to make it rhyme

Bonus points if you can find a way to make the tour title rhyme . Names that rhyme are catchy. For example, a tour name like “Sky-High Zipline Tour” rolls off the tongue.

6. Consider the location

Your location is one of the most important factors about your tour. From an SEO standpoint, travelers will start searching for activity by typing in the name of the town they’re located in. For example, they might type in, “Zipline tours near Boston.” While all of your tour names might not have the location in the title, it’s important to keep it in mind.

Is your town known for anything in particular? Many places have common phrases that reference the unique character of a city. Boston, for example, is known locally as “Beantown.” Your town’s slogans and nicknames might also help you brainstorm a tour name.

3 examples of catchy tour names

These tour operators are doing it right. Let’s take a look at three catchy tour names and discuss why they work.

1. Denver Adventures

Denver Adventures operates a zipline course in Denver, Colorado. Here we have a great example of a tour name that’s clear, concise, and speaks to a particular audience. When customers come across the title “Sunset 4-Zipline Adventure Tour,” they’ll instantly know that this is a zipline tour happening during sunset. The use of the word “adventure” means the operator is targeting adrenaline-seeking customers that want to feel a sense of adventure.

2. Sonoma Canopy Tours

Sonoma Canopy Tours is a zipline course operator in California that offers several different tours. One of them is titled “Night Flight Tour,” which makes use of the rhyming tip we discussed earlier in this article. While the tour name is just three words long, it does a great job highlighting the most unique aspect of the experience — the fact that it occurs at night.

HeliNY

HeliNY, a helicopter tour operator in New York City, runs a tour called “The New Yorker,” as locals are called. Rather than giving the tour a generic name, the operator uses a term unique to NYC that leaves customers curious to find out more. This particular tour flies around the Statue of Liberty, making it a truly “New York” experience. The name of the tour reflects that.

What do the three operators above have in common? They understand what drives their

How to Name Your Tour & Tour Name Ideas

tourism

  • September 28, 2022

When naming your tour, you want to make sure that it accurately represents what people can expect from the experience. You also want to choose a name that is clear and descriptive, something that will grab people’s attention and make them want to learn more.

In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for choosing a tour name, as well as how to write a “bold promise” and an effective call to action (CTA). Watch the video below for more examples and expanded explanations.

Naming your tours

Most tour operators overthink the naming of their tours, but there are a few things you can keep in mind that will help you choose the perfect one.

First, make sure that your tour name accurately reflects what prospective guests can expect from the tour. You don’t want to disappoint your guests by having a tour name that doesn’t match up with the actual tour.

Second, try to choose a tour name that is simple, clear and uses descriptive language. Don’t make prospective guests think hard to work out what the tour is about.

Finally, try to incorporate keywords into your tour names, for example, Asheville E-bike Tour.

name for tour operator

Writing a bold promise

Now that you have some tips for choosing a tour name, let’s discuss how to write a bold promise. A bold promise is a short statement (one or two sentences) that highlights the main benefits or unique selling points of the tour.

It should be interesting and enticing, something that will make people want to learn more about your tour.

When writing a bold promise, you might like to apply our Bold Promise Framework as follows:

Enjoy <biggest desire> without <biggest pain> even if <biggest objection>.

Let’s apply the framework to Asheville E-bike Tours.

Experience Asheville’s vibrant arts scene and fresh mountain air without the hassle of traffic and parking even if it’s your first time on an e-bike.

Crafting an effective call to action

name for tour operator

Finally, let’s talk about how to create an effective call to action. A call to action is a statement that tells potential guests what you want them to do next. For example, if you want people to book a tour, your call to action might be “Book Now” or “Buy Tickets” or “Check Availability”.

Whatever you do, make sure that your call to action is instantly visible to your website visitors and easy to understand.

All of these three elements – your tour name, bold promise and call to action – should be “above the fold” on your website. This simply means that visitors shouldn’t have to scroll to see them.

That’s all for now! We hope this blog post has given you some helpful tips for choosing a tour name, writing a bold promise, and creating an effective call to action.

All the best with applying these tips and be sure to drop us an email at [email protected] if you’d like some extra help.

Hogan was our excellent guide. We were a family of 8 ranging in age from teens to mid sixties of varying hiking ability and were all able to enjoy a wide range of activities. We paid extra for hotel accommodations and found it well worth it although, if everyone is willing to sleep in tents, you can save a lot and have basically the same adventure.
Trip of a lifetime! These guys know what they are doing. This trip was to celebrate my Mom's 90th birthday - she loves the southwest National Parks and Bindlestiff Tours absolutely hit the mark! It's a busy holiday - but you get to see so much. Our guide, John (The Boss ;-)) was phenomenal - the best! He knew so much about the areas and brought us together as a group (he has great taste in music too), but he helped make the tour so enjoyable. He made everything so easy for us just to enjoy the whole experience. We didn't have to think about transport as he drove us, we'd arrive at the national park - straight in and paid for, ideas for hikes that each group of us could realistically achieve. Lunch was provided, we just walked in and out of hotel rooms, ideas for restaurants too. Having done my own 'road trip' holidays before, this tour took so much of the organisation out of it and we enjoyed every minute. Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Monument Valley, Antelope canyon and Grand Canyon....then there were the extra visits to Route 66, sunsets and sunrises - all amazing experiences and memories!! We were so fortunate to have a lovely group of fellow travellers - ranging from teenagers to 90 and we all got along whilst doing our own thing too. This tour had travellers on their - which is something that I am considering now as it's a bit of company but you can still do your own thing. I am so grateful to all involved who helped us have such a wonderful time. Many thanks!

Maggy and Vassil's wonderful Magnifisent Alaska Tour with Southwest Adventure Tours! July 2024 The trip was awesome. The itinerary was very well planned. The places we visited were spectacular/you can enjoy the photos/. All of the above is due to our guide - Daniel(Dan) Sachse, He is a very experience tour guide with good driving skill. His knowledge of Alaska, its nature, history and culture made our trip wonderful. He is consummately friendly and courteous, always with a smile on his face. He created a very friendly atmosphere in our group. He was always cheerful, enthusiastic and showed great concern for the welfare of our group. A first class tour leader! Thank you, Southwest Adventure Tours and Dan for the fantastic trip!
This was my 1st solo group trip & felt safe & comfortable. The tour guide was so friendly, warm & knowledgeable! I really enjoyed my little Mighty 5 adventure!

The tour was overally amazing. I had a really fun experience and I would recommend this to anyone wanting to experience the west coast. However, the itinerary did start to fall flat from day 3. There was sooo much traveling and not enough sigh-seeing in my opinion.
If you plan on doing the Vegas and Best of the West Tour, don’t. It is basically two three day tour that has been mashed together. My tour guide for the first half of the tour (Sedona, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and Valley of Fire) was passive aggressive and incredibly condescending. I understand she was speaking three different languages but she missed telling the English speaking people a critical piece of information, and when i told her what she did, she would not believe me and was incredibly rude to me, to the point it made me cry. The second tour guide for the last half of the trip was the same, attacking me when i made the point that i had already seen most of the things, and accusing me of not being grateful If you are an English speaking person and want to go on this trip- don’t. They cater almost exclusively to Italian people who speak no English. It will be an extremely lonely experience.

The tour was amazing, the manager did a top notch job, it’s great for making lots of friends, such a blast. A little rushed and fast paced, but it’s better than the stress of organising your own trip. Definitely doing it again
I thought it was great and would do it again any time!

Britt I the tour leader was obviously passionate about her work.
THis was our first touring experience and it was great. With the exception of a cancelled flight going to the tour and some miss communication in the beginning of when we would get there, it was fantastic. Our guide was great and well organized.

Costsaver

  • Excellent - 938 reviews for USA tours
The tour guide gave conflicting information to different people which caused us to have to take an Uber from our hotel to the restaurant for dinner and then the bus (that was at the hotel) proceeded to take others from the hotel to the restaurant.
This is a trip of a lifetime ! We travelled from New York to Los Angeles and had a ball. This country has so much going for it! So much to see! The coach was brilliant, comfortable and fully air conditioned. Tour director Jon and driver Sam were exceptional, knowledgeable and helpful. Anybody looking to see America, we would recommend this tour. Lots of free time with special places like the Elvis experience and the hotels were brilliant! We will be back for another USA tour in the next couple of years! can’t wait!

Neil our guide was amazing, my husband and I had a great time.
Ronnie and I loved the tour. Our guide Rachel, was extremely professional in her work. Full of knowledge about different animals as well as some history lessons. It took me a while, but they are called bison , not buffalo. ? But what really blew my mind, was her keen eye on the landscape as she was driving. She could spot animals very well, and gave us many opportunities to take photos and look through the high powered scope. Rachel is surely a people person, jumping right in there to become friends with strangers, laughing and carrying on with us. Even when we were all getting excited about stopping to see the two grizzly bears mating, questions being tossed at her. She was calm and gave answers and instructions like a mother with her children. ?? Not that we’d tell our young kids what was going on. They were the hugging bears. ?? It pays to ask someone on the road what they are looking at, and that video Rachel captured is priceless. Guys, pay attention! ? She was a very safe driver as we encountered many elements of weather. She also sent us pictures and videos from her scope of the many, many, animals we saw. I would highly recommend this tour, it’s worth every penny. The hotels were awesome and cute, especially in Cooke City Montana. It was as if we were going back to the early days. The restaurants were good and Rachel even recommended good eats. Met some wonderful people and will always cherish this trip, as we witnessed God’s creation. Thanks again. Ronnie and Mary Jane from Wharton Texas. See y’all. ?

Insight Vacations

Insight Vacations

  • Excellent - 652 reviews for USA tours
The 40 seat luxury coach broke down at the end of day 1 of our 9 day Insight Vacations Wonders of the American West coach tour in May. It was replaced for the rest of our tour by a 56 seater coach with significantly less legroom, and seatbelts that didn’t have the side adjuster that enables you to stop the belt rubbing into your neck if you’re a certain body shape. For us, the reason for choosing Insight was their luxury coach, so every day on the 56 seater was a reminder that (to use a flying analogy) we had paid for business class and were getting economy class. We had booked through a travel agent because we’d read the online reviews warning of Insight’s poor communication. The travel agent Freedom Destinations, who supported us, put forward our complaint to Insight. Insight sympathised but cited their terms and conditions that don’t require them to replace the luxury coach with one of the same quality. To an extent I understand that they need to cover themselves for an instance where a luxury replacement isn’t available on the day of the breakdown, but not to provide one at any stage of the remainder of our tour feels like either poor contingency planning or cost-saving. Insight refused our request for a cash payment as compensation. Instead they offered a discount voucher for use on a future trip. We declined the voucher as we do not believe it to be fair to only offer compensation that is dependent upon customers re-using a service, and our faith in their organisation and their coach suppliers Holiday Motor Coach has been broken. Such a shame, because the sights on the trip were wonderful, as were the people we travelled with. 1 star to highlight the risks associated with a breakdown to other potential customers for whom the luxury coach is important.
Overall it was a good experience. Excellent tour director and driver. The food was inconsistent as to quality and service. The lodgings were fine for the type of trip. Too much time was spent at Monument Valley/Mystery valley and not enough time at Grand Canyon.

Would like to have walked down the main street of Chinatown. We're very disappointed in the side street we walked on. If you are going to offer snacks, please make sure all can participate. Found it a little offensive that even after the second day of not being able to receive a snack, all the same snacks were continually offered.
Extraordinary experience!!!! I’ll never forget!! Thank you so much for this great opportunity.

The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

On the first leg from Chicago to Niagara Falls, we had an excellent travel companion in a modern Mercedes coach. Later we continued from Niagara Falls to New York, Philadelphia and Washington. The now large coaches were regularly too cold, so that the passengers sometimes had to "warm" themselves with jackets and long pants. One major drawback, however, was that there was no WiFi available from Niagara Falls onwards. That is actually a shame. Nevertheless, all the tour guides made a great effort. The hotels were also "okay" to "good". Thank you very much for this trip, we met very nice people from all over the world.
Wonderful tour! Highly recommend

Trip on balance was a positive experience and I would do it again. The key negative was the Golden Nugget hotel which added nothing positive to the trip. The hotel was past its prime, and was too busy and loud. The rest of the accommodations were good.
Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places

Tour Operators

Tour operator is an organization, firm, or company who buys individual travel components, separately from their suppliers and combines them into a package tour, which is sold with their own price tag to the public directly or through middlemen, is called a Tour Operator .

More precise tour operators are primarily responsible for delivering and performing the services specified in a given package tour. They can provide these services themselves as some have their own cars and coaches, hotels, and other travel-related services or can obtain these from the other suppliers. That is why they are called manufacturers of tourism products .

Tour operators are sometimes called wholesalers but this is partially true because a wholesaler buys goods and services in bulk at his own account to prepare a tour package and then retails it through the travel agencies or directly to clients. However, a tour operator who has his own one or more tourists products components, (SOTC, TCI, Thomas Cook, Indo Asia KUONI formulates a new tourist product for example ‘ inclusive tours .’

Tour operators generally offer a variety of package tours to cater to the needs of different kinds of travelers.

Definitions of Tour Operator

Poyther (1993) defines, “tour operator is  one who has the responsibility of putting the tour ingredients together, marketing it, making reservations and handling actual operation.”

Holloway (1992) stated that tour operations undertake a distinct function in the tourism industry, they purchase separate elements of tourism products/services and combine them into a package tour which they sell directly or indirectly to the tourists.

Today, tour operators have become highly competitive. They endeavor to achieve a high volume of turnover, and maximum International and domestic market share by effectively operating. Moreover, the success of many developed and developing nations as tourists destinations depend heavily on a tour operator’s ability to attract tourists, development and promotion of tourism plant, diversification of tourism product and their social responsibilities to develop a remote and backward area.

Types of Tour Operators

Tour operators are basically categorized into four types . These are categories on the basis of their nature of the business and its operations.

Inbound Tour Operators

Outbound tour operators, domestic tour operators.

  • Ground Operators

These are also known as incoming tour operators . Technically, the operators who receive guests, clients/tourists, and handle arrangements in the host country are c alled inbound tour operators . For example, a group of American Tourists is coming through TCI Ltd. to India and the company makes arrangements and handles the group in India then TCI is called an inbound tour operator.

Incidentally, the inbound traffic to the country for the last two decades has been decreasing. Essentially the tour operators need to adopt innovative marketing strategies and should introduce a special interest tour to cater the special needs of Japanese, Americans, French and British people.

Tour operator who promote tours for foreign destinations, maybe business tour or leisure tour is called outbound tour operators . For example a group of American tourists going to a trip of India and Thomas Cook handle arrangement in America like as ticket reservation, hotel booking etc. then Thomas Cook is called Outbound Tour operators in the context of America.

Domestic tour operators are those who assemble, combine tourist components into inclusive tours and sell it to the domestic travelers. In general, these tour operators provide travel services within the tourist’s native country.

The domestic tour operators operate within the boundary of the home country and offer package tour to the travelers viz. Domestic inclusive tours or independent tours.

Ground Operators/Destination Management Companies

These are commonly known as handling agencies and their main function is to organize tour arrangements for incoming tourists on the behalf of overseas operators. Let us take the case of India as a destination that – has a varied culture.

When a tour operator himself promotes beach holidays, wildlife holidays, adventure tours, heritage tours at the different places, the difficulty arises. It is the ground operator then who by handling the incoming travelers in the same season but at different places ensures that the entire operation is according to the package tours or agreements.

Sometime when a handling agency is at a prominent tourist place i.e., Delhi and it has to make arrangements to Goa, then it contracts (If it has no office of its own) with a local operator (known as excursion agent) to handle the arrangement on his behalf.

Why Ground Operators?

Obviously, the tour operation companies do not have close contact with suppliers, governments, destinations and so on. It leaves no choice with the companies but to appoint handling agencies at the destinations.  The main reasons are:

  • Introduction of new products or plant to promote an exotic destination.
  • Lack of Government regulations.
  • Lack of personal contract.
  • Language problem.
  • The company cannot establish its own branch.

Recognizing the very fact that the reputation, performance, and profitability of tour company in its own market largely depends on the efficiency and effectiveness of ground operators, it has because necessary for the company to consider various factors before the selection of a handling agency, they are:

  • Size of business
  • Professional staff
  • Length of business
  • Area of operation/Product line
  • Market share

Functions of Ground Tour Operators

Over the years of functions and activities of the destination, companies have changed drastically to cope with the changing environment of the tourism industry. In fact, today’s destination companies have become more professional and are bound to provide personalized travel services to the tourists. The following functions are performed by ground tours operators:

  • Land arrangement
  • Contract and Negotiate with other vendors
  • Handling of Arrival and departure procedure
  • Planning and organizing local package tour
  • Escorting the tourists
  • Providing market information
  • Costing and pricing package tour

Practically, if we see the working of the travel agencies and tour operators in the industry we find that most of the organizations are performing different types of activities like the retail travel agency , wholesale travel agency, and tour operators.

The travel agency business is no longer an amateurism. Over the last two decades, the pattern and structure of travel agencies have changed to meet tough challenges in the international market. Today, small-scale agencies are finding the travel industry increasingly complex.

Thus, the small and medium scale travel agencies are disappearing or merging or falling instead of rising. On the other hand, a new concept has also emerged i.e. tour operation business . The tour operation business is new but a maturing business at the global level.

Functions of Tour Operator

A tour operator is an organization, firm, or person who is responsible for the actual arrangement of transport and accommodation facilities on any tour or vacations. They are also responsible for operating and providing vacation through contracting, booking, and packaging together of the various components of the tour such as hotel, transportation, meals, guides, optional tours, and sometimes flights.

A tour operator is like a service provider, providing the most convenient option for tourists to stay, visit, as well as leave from the city. A tour operator owns a high volume of travel services across carriers, services, and accommodation. Some most important functions of the tour operators are following as:

It is a very important function of all type tour operators and travel agencies. Tour operator makes all the reservation by making linkages with accommodation sector, transport sector and other entertainment organizations to reserve rooms, and seats in cultural programmes and transportation.

Tour operators provide immediate support systems at the host country as well as a foreign land. When tourists travel to a foreign land and things get uncertain, maybe its a health or loss of documents and need to return back or change of travel plan. A qualified tour operator takes care of all these unseen events with efficiency.

Tour operator caters to the needs of tourists on the based on their taste of travel. Tour operator provides all the best available option according to tourist needs and demands

Difference between Travel Agent and Tour Operator

There is a lot of confusion about the difference between tour operators and travel agents what exactly makes them different. The main difference between a Travel agent and Tour operator are following as:

  • A travel agent is a person who has full knowledge of tourist product – destinations, modes of travel, climate, accommodation, and other areas of the service sector. He acts on the behalf of the product providers/principals and in return get a commission.
  • Tour operator is an organization, firm, or company that buys individual travel components, separately from their suppliers and combines them into a package tour, which is sold with their own price tag to the public directly or through middlemen.
  • Tour operators are like wholesalers and travel agents are the retailers.
  • A tour operator makes the package holidays up and the travel agents sell them on.
  • Tour operator taking up the bulk of the responsibilities and his fee is obviously much greater than a travel agent.
  • A tour operator has the responsibility to look after the finer details of a vacation or tour such as hotel, accommodation, meals, conveyance, etc.

The wholesale travel agencies may offer or operate the package tours or may specialize in developing tours for inbound as well as outbound travelers. They are often referred to as tour operators, but there is a difference between Wholesale Travel Agencies and Tour operators .

Our Readers' Favorite Tour Operators in 2022

These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.

name for tour operator

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

What is a tour operator and how does it work?

The tour operator is an integral component of tourism , yet many people are unclear about what a tour operator actually is or what they do.

In this article I will explain what a tour operator is and why tour operators are important. I will also talk about what the difference between a tour operator and a travel agent is, as well as the different types of tour operators.

What is a tour operator?

Definitions of tour operator, importance of tour operators, the difference between a tour operator and a travel agent, what does a tour operator do, products and services sold by tour operators, inbound tour operators, outbound tour operators, domestic tour operators, ground tour operators, the association of independent tour operators, the tour operator: to conclude.

Tour operators are inextricably linked to the package holiday model. The tour operator is the person or organisation who creates the package. A travel agency is then used to sell the package holiday.

In the chain of distribution , the tour operator is represented by the term ‘wholesaler’. This is because the tour operator is responsible for purchasing products of services in bulk and then redistributing them as a packaged product to consumers.

To put it simply, a tour operator is the person or organisation who takes the individual elements of a holiday (e.g. transfer, hotel, transport) and packages these together.

The types of package vary. Most commonly, tour operators are associated with mass tourism and the traditional package holiday market. However, tour operators do also play an important role in the production of niche tourism products and services too.

If you’re looking for a formal definition of a tour operator with a reputable source, you may want to reference Polyther, who in 1993, defined the tour operator as;

‘[an organisation or person] who has the responsibility of putting the tour ingredients together, marketing it, making reservations and handling actual operation’.

Similarly, Holloway (1992) states that;

tour operations undertake a distinct function in the tourism industry, they purchase separate e lements of tourism products/services and combine them into a package tour which they sell directly or indirectly to the tourists .

The Organisation for Economic and Cultural Development (OECD) define a tour operator as follows;

‘Tour operators are businesses that combine two or more travel services (e.g., transport, accommodation, meals, entertainment, sightseeing) and sell them through travel agencies or directly to final consumers as a single product (called a package tour) for a global price. The components of a package tour might be pre-established or can result from an “a la carte” procedure, in which the visitor decides the combination of services he/she wishes to acquire.’

Tour operators are an important part of the tourism industry .

Tour operators make the logistics of organising a holiday much easier for the consumer. This makes people more likely to travel, more often.

Tour operators have a lot of power. If they choose to sell holidays in a particular location, for example, then that location will receive many of the associated positive and negative economic impacts of tourism .

Tour operators are often vertically or horizontally integrated with other organisations, such as travel agents and airlines. This allows for easier management and distribution of products.

Tour operators typically build holidays en masse. This means that economies of scale play a key role in driving down prices- the more you produce the cheaper the product becomes! This is obviously beneficial to the consumer and helps travel agents to have a competitive advantage when selling holidays.

Many people are not aware that a travel agent and a tour operator are actually two totally different organisations and they are not aware of the difference between a tour operator and a travel agent.

In fact, it is quite easy to understand this difference!

A tour operator is the organisation which puts the different elements of a holiday together. And the travel agent is the organisation who sells it to the consumer.

Whilst this differentiation is pretty easy to comprehend, it is easy to understand why people get tour operators and travel agents confused. This is largely because many organisations will operate under the same company. For example, TUI has a tour operator and a travel agent (and an airline too). As a result, many people do not realise that in actual fact, there are two separate organisations doing two separate jobs.

parked boat

Ultimately, a tour operator is responsible for putting the different elements of a holiday together into a commodified package.

To do this, there are a number of different roles and responsibilities that tour operator staff will have. This includes:

  • Data analysis- which destinations will sell best, how many holidays should they sell etc
  • Assessing suitability of accommodation, transfer and transport options
  • Liaising with stakeholders e.g. coach operators, airlines, hoteliers and resort representatives
  • Negotiating contracts
  • Confirming reservations with airlines/hotels
  • Managing and responding to customer feedback
  • Undertaking market research
  • Production of marketing material
  • Providing pricing information
  • Handling bookings, invoicing and issuing of tickets
  • Working with travel consultants from different travel agencies to put holiday packages together

Tour operators have a number of products and services that they sell, depending on their specific business model, business intentions and target market. A tour operator will typically package together two of more elements to form a packaged product, which is then sold at an inclusive price.

Examples include:

  • Package holidays
  • Accommodation
  • Information on destinations
  • Representative service in resorts

Types of tour operator

Tour operators come in all shapes and sizes. Some are large, multinational organisations and other are small, independent business.

Different types of tour operators develop products for different types of tourism . This can include the mass market, niche tourism market, special interest tourism, the luxury market, tailor-made products and dynamic packages .

great wall of china

There are four different types of tour operators, which I will explain below.

  • Inbound Tour Operators
  • Outbound Tour Operators
  • Domestic Tour Operators
  • Ground Operators

The tour operator. types of tour operators.

An inbound tour operator is one who facilitates inbound tourism .

The aim of an inbound tour operator is to bring tourists in to a particular country or countries.

Inbound tour operators will often collaborate with local travel agencies and transport operators to facilitate travel arrangements for their customers.

Inbound tour operator example: A group of German tourists conduct a tour of China, encompassing a visit to Shanghai , Hangzhou and the Yellow Mountains . The tour operator who organises their travel is Chinese-based company China Highlights . This company is based locally in China and they offer local, Chinese tours.

An outbound tour operator is one who facilitates outbound tourism .

The aim of an outbound tour operator is to send tourists out of a particular country or countries.

Outbound tour operators will often collaborate with foreign travel agencies and transport operators to facilitate travel arrangements for their customers.

Outbound tour operator example : A family of four from Liverpool, UK want to book an all-inclusive summer sun holiday in Alicante. They book through TUI , the largest tour operator in Britain, who specialises in outbound travel. They are based in the UK, but they work with foreign partners to facilitate holidays overseas.

A domestic tour operator is one who facilitates domestic tourism .

The aim of a domestic tour operator is to organise travel within a particular country or countries.

Domestic tour operators will often collaborate with domestic travel agencies and transport operators to facilitate travel arrangements for their customers. Domestic tour operators will often also serve the inbound tourism market.

Domestic tour operator example : A group of twenty-something boys from Chicago want to travel to Florida for the spring break holiday. They want to do a tour of the local attractions in the area and have some time to relax on the beach . They organise their travel through the tour company, Trek America . Staff at this company are experts in domestic travel within the USA.

A ground tour operator is an organisation who dopes the ground work as grass roots level.

Many tour operators do not have connections in all places around the world, therefore they build a network of connections to help them run their business.

Essentially, some of the work is passed on to a third party, known as a ground operator. This work may include negotiating local contracts, liaising with local suppliers and providing market data, amongst other things.

This is especially common for small tour operators.

You may also hear ground tour operators referred to as handling operators or handling agents.

Ground tour operator example : A backpacker wants to ‘give something back’ and book a volunteer tourism holiday in Kerala. She wanted to use a known and trusted tour operator to book her trip so she booked it with Intrepid Travel . Intrepid Travel create and sell adventure holidays all over the world, and it is impossible for them to have contacts and every staff in every corner of the globe. Therefore they work with local ground operators, who do the work on the ground. In this instance, the ground organisation is Iris Travel – a tour operator based in Kerela, India.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators , abbreviated as AITO, is a travel industry trade group (like  ABTA  or ATOL) based in Britain. They launched in 1976.

The AITO represents around 120 independent  tour operators  across 200 countries.

These tour operators provide access to a huge range of activities including city breaks, safaris, luxury holidays and much more. The AITO is based in Twickenham, south-west London.

The AITO does a variety of things. Most importantly, you can be reassured that your holiday is well-protected thanks to the Association of Independent Tour Operators.

They assess every member financially as well as by their own business practice code before granting membership; this means that you are guaranteed clear and accurate descriptions of holidays as well as tour standards that are consistently monitored.

Tour operators are an important part of the tourism industry, and with AITO, you have added security when booking your travels through a tour operator. Hopefully after reading this article you are now confident with what a tour operator is, how these organisations work and the different types of tour operators operating the market.
