Best time to visit serbia.

Generally, Serbia's weather is quite moderate, with a mixture of Central European and Mediterranean conditions providing the potential for fine weather in all seasons. Both summer and winter are prone to occasional days of extreme weather, with occasional dry, hot days in summer and heavy snowfalls from December to April. The majority of rainfall occurs from March to April and from October to November. Despite the temperature occasionally rising above 95 degrees F in the south, cold spells are not uncommon. With this in mind, it's a good idea to be prepared for all temperatures (regardless of the season), and pack a mixture of summer and winter clothes. For nature lovers, spring brings blossoming flowers and warm temperatures, and the countryside is at its greenest during this time.

As is the case with many other European destinations, Serbia experiences the highest volume of visitors between July and August, so expect crowds around Belgrade and in Novi Sad, especially during the annual EXIT festival in July.

Culture and customs

Serbia’s culture has been shaped by a history of migration, conquest and war. In some ways, the country is still reeling from the aftermath of the Yugoslav wars, though what has clearly emerged is a strong sense of patriotism. A surefire way to offend a local is to lump Serbia with other ex-Yugoslav nations. While what it means to be a Serb is still evolving, for many it means being family-oriented, speaking Serbian and belonging to the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Food and drink

Traditional Serbian cuisine is a hearty fusion of Turkish, Mediterranean, Hungarian and Austrian influences, rich in meat, cheese and pastry. Drinking coffee is a national pastime in Serbia, with Turkish-style kafa being the blend of choice.

Must-try foods in Serbia

  • Cevapi   Cevapi is a small grilled sausage, usually served with flatbread, onions and sauces.
  • Sarma Similar to Greek dolmades, sarma is a small roll made using ground beef and rice that’s then wrapped in pickled cabbage or grapevine.
  • Burek  Commonly eaten for breakfast along with a drinkable yoghurt, burek is made using thin layers of pastry filled with cheese, spinach or minced meat.

Geography and environment

This largely unspoilt Balkan country is characterized by wide rivers, rugged mountains and stunning lakes. Picturesque Vojvodina flatlands, fertile fields and glacial lakes cover the northern region. South of Belgrade, the terrain becomes more rugged, with the Dinaric Alps to the west and the Balkan Mountains to the east. The Danube River extends across the country, entering from the border with Croatia in the west and exiting through Romania in the east; the eastern portion of the Danube is widely considered the most scenic part of the entire river. Djerdap National Park – home to white cliffs, lush green hills, oak forests and rich biodiversity, is located in this region.

Top 5 Belgrade bars

1. the federal association of globe trotters.

Although its name may suggest otherwise, many travelers miss out on the delights of this uber-trendy spot. While an inconspicuous location and total lack of signage keep this carefree bar off the map, those curious enough to step off the street will find an eclectic and exotic decor that borrows from just about every culture on earth. Add a laidback vibe and some lip smacking cocktails and you can see why locals and tourists fall in love with this place time and time again. If Intrepid owned a bar, this is what it would look like.

2. Blaznavak Cafe

You have to wonder whether Petrovic Blaznavak - a former Serbian defense minister - could have imagined that his former house would become one of Belgrade’s hippest bars, 150 years after it was first built. But that's exactly what makes Blaznavak Cafe particularly charming - it’s a perfect place to meet, drink, eat and discuss, in the classical surrounds of a Serbian house filled with technicolor graffiti. Need we say more?

3. Mr Steven Brown

Their website proclaims 'it doesn’t matter who Steven Brown is', but we reckon he must know how to party. With guests such as Gerard Butler, Novak Djokovic and Michael Madsen spotted in the midst of this super club, it's certainly not for the faint of heart or weak of wallet. But then again, the city views and all-night awesomeness might just make it a worthy end to any Belgrade pub crawl.

4. Sunset Bar

If someone told you that they spent a day in Belgrade lazing under the shade of an umbrella and sipping cocktails on the beach, you could probably be forgiven for thinking they had gone insane. But before you check them into the asylum, head down to the banks of the Danube on one of Serbia's glorious summer days. Not only will you find bronzed bodies splashing in the cool waters, but some of the city's best bars are set up along the shoreline - ready to welcome you with a fruit cocktail or delicious ice-cream sundae. According to one of the most popular of these bars, the aptly named Sunset Bar, 'your pleasure and good time are our mission'. Mission accomplished!

For those that like their cosmopolitans served with a side of contemplation, Plato’s Jazz Club is situated in the esteemed Philosophy Department of Belgrade University. A former meeting point during the student protest of the 90s, the debonair setting is absolutely charming, even if the drinks are a little pricey. Be careful though, emerging from Plato’s shadowy jazzy cave and into the daylight may change your perception (of bars) forever - or at least have you raving about 'the truth' to your friends for years to come.

Shopping malls and stores selling international designers are increasingly popping up in Serbia’s larger cities, but local markets (pijaca) – where most Serbs still prefer to buy their fruit and vegetables – remain the best place to get a proper feel of the local culture. Most markets feature both flea market sections and fresh produce sections, so you can shop local culinary specialties – like ajvar (a capsicum-based relish) and homemade rakija – as well as antiques and other memorabilia.

Knez Mihailova is a lively pedestrian mall in the heart of Belgrade. Vendors selling artisan crafts and traditional items like opanci (traditional shoes with the toe curled back), Serbian embroidery and ceramics, can be found at the top end of the street. Department stores, boutiques and coffee shops are also located here.

Serbia is a cash country. Though payment by debit and credit card is becoming increasingly common, most places still only accept cash. Shops in larger cities tend to open from 9 am to 7 pm, Monday to Friday. In smaller cities, they tend to close at 5 pm instead. Most shops do not open on Sunday.

Festivals and events in Serbia

This popular festival originated as a student-led resistance to the Milosevic regime. It has grown into a multi-day, multi-genre festival that draws some of the biggest names in music to the stunning Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad each July.

Guca Trumpet Festival

Think a festival dedicated to trumpets sounds like a dull school recital? Think again. This rowdy celebration of Balkan brass music, which takes place every August, is Serbia’s wildest party.

Belgrade Boat Carnival

Decorated boats parade through Belgrade’s two rivers (the Danube and Sava Rivers) while spectators take in riverside entertainment and tasty street food at this annual July celebration.

Nis Burek Days Festival

Though popular throughout the Balkans, the city of Nis claims to be the inventor of this flaky cheese pie. Every September, the city commemorates Nis’ culinary contribution by feasting on variations of savory burek.

Our visit to Serbia was perfect. Our Guide/Driver was Marko and he was excellent, always arrived before meeting timings, very knowledgeable on all aspects of the place we visited and gave us some good advice on local matters. The hotels and food were very good too. Pickup and drop off from the airport were well managed. Overall it was another successful trip arranged by Tour Rader and the operator. • 11 Gorgeous Natural Sights You...

11 Gorgeous Natural Sights You Can Only See in Serbia

The unique majesty of Serbias Uvac canyon

Heard about the lakes of Slovenia , the beaches of Croatia , the valleys of Bosnia ? You likely have, as all three are now internationally well-known with more and more people waking up to the natural beauty of the former Yugoslavia. But what of Serbia and its canyons, mountains and weird alien-constructed rock formations? What of Europe’s biggest desert and extraterrestrial stones that can heal you?

If the question is ‘what is Serbia’s nature like?’, the answer must be ‘like nothing you’ve ever seen before’.

You may have learned about meanders in geography classes when you were young, and the bends most likely will have been illustrated in a most dramatic fashion. Idyllic turquoise water flowing extravagantly between mountains, the river taking a contradictory course in a dreamlike canyon, like something out of a weird geography-themed dream. This overly-flowery introduction barely does justice to the majesty of the Uvac canyon, the premier natural sight in Serbia today. The bends are in the 270 degree bracket at times, and the thrilling power of nature is rounded out by the appearance of vultures, lakes, eagles and caves. As far as natural sights in Serbia go, Uvac is the main event.

The glorious meanders of Uvac

The name translates as ‘Devil’s Town’, but visitors need not be alarmed. If Beelzebub is here, he’ll be taking a photo as well. Đavolja Varoš is a collection of more than 200 most peculiar formations of rock in the Toplica district on the disputed Kosovo border. The formations are usually referred to as ‘towers’, but the truth is describing them with one word is little more than a fool’s game. The area is full of legends, tales of those foolish enough to betray a witch, along with stories of people bullied into action by the devil. But the aesthetics are more than enough to justify a visit.

Cursed locals? Petrified wedding guests? Simple erosion?

Krupaj Spring

Serbia is known as the ‘land of waters’, and there are enough springs throughout the country to alert even the most apathetic of plumbers. The enchanting (that word is not used lightly) Krupaj spring fully deserves to sit at the top table of Serbian water magic. It is embellished by its surroundings – lush green forests, gossiping birds and an almost unsettling tranquility give the impression of being transported into a fairytale. The childishly-blue water finalises the deal, cascading over a dam and down into a lake that you can’t quite believe you didn’t notice until just now.

Tara National Park

In the extreme west of the country, a mere throw of a stone from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tara may not be the highest mountain in Serbia but it may well be its most adored. People have lived here for millennia, and the ‘world-within-a-world’ atmosphere is as infectious as it is incredible. Lakes, monasteries, rivers, forests and the rest abound. To visit Tara is to experience life without distraction. This is the most forested area of Serbia too – for the freshest air, look no further.

The Tara River and its gorgeous surroundings

Đerdap Gorge

Known as the Iron Gate, the Đerdap Gorge is what a border would look like if all borders were created by deities. The gorge itself is somewhat incorrectly named, as it is in fact a river comprised of three gorges. But why worry about classification when faced with this sort of beauty? Water stretches as far as the eye can see, bordered by cliff-faces and caves. The medieval Golubac Fortress is also found here, a dramatic example of man’s attempt to conquer Mother Earth but only managing to conquer itself.

The monolithic majesty of the Đerdap Gorge

The Great War Island

Belgrade’s Great War Island is an integral part of life in the capital city, which is all the more remarkable considering it is uninhabited and practically abandoned. The island stands at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, giving the two bodies of water no choice but to collide. It has withstood plans to colonise and erase it throughout the 20th century. The Great War Island is quite literally an island of tranquility in an ocean of chaos.

Fruška Gora

On the lonely sole mountain that rises up over the flat plains of Vojvodina, Fruška Gora is accessible from Belgrade despite seemingly being on another planet. The national park is home to the largest concentration of linden trees in Europe, to go with the thick forest that provides ample cover and security for the many monasteries built here. Fruška Gora holds a special place in the heart of most living north of the capital city, and it doesn’t take a nature enthusiast to work out why.

Deliblato Sands

Sand isn’t something you associate with Europe. Okay, the continent has countless gorgeous beaches full of the stuff, but swathes of copper soil as far as the eye can see isn’t really Europe’s thing. With that in mind, here is a revelation for you – Serbia is home to the largest desert in continental Europe. The Deliblato Sands can be found in the Northwest of the country, about halfway between Pančevo and Vršac, The desert has been here for almost 12,000 years. It isn’t going away any time soon.

Not an oasis in sight

Vratna Gates

What Eastern Serbia lacks in modern towns and cities, it more than makes up for in natural goodness. The Vratna Gates are another addition to its stacked cannon: three natural stone bridges that are all unique in their own way. The area is a fantastic example of just how alive rivers are. The gates formed when the flowing Vratna river caused the roof of a cave to collapse before giving way to the influence of erosion and Father Time.

The Vratna Gates are another East Serbian marvel

Povlen Globes

Named after the mountain on which they were discovered, the mysterious ‘globes’ of Povlen are supposed to contain the power to heal even the most distressing of ailments. The locals say they were made by aliens or even an extinct race of humongous warriors who used the globes as weapons. But then this is the area in which Serbian vampire Sava Savanović was supposed to roam, so prepare that pinch of salt. The globes are fascinating and unique nonetheless, regardless of the quality of their healing powers.

Caves aren’t unique to Serbia, but the old adage that every cave is different most certainly rings true in the nation’s underground. Resava may have been the first cave open for visitors, but Ceremošnja may well take the prize for the state’s most engrossing. Just over half of the entire system is available to tourists, but the variety of formations waiting to be seen makes this more than enough. Stalactites and stalagmites are everywhere, and the second section of the cave (known as the Arena) is worth the price of admission all on its own.

See the Best of Northern Serbia: Easy 7-Day Serbia Itinerary

My one-week Serbia itinerary visiting three of the top cities in Northern Serbia plus one national park is ideal for first-time visitors.

From the concrete jungle of gritty Belgrade to the pretty Art Nouveau towns in the north, Serbia is a haven for wine-lovers, electronic music fans, architecture buffs, Yugo-nostalgics and hikers alike.

Admittedly I’m none of those things – but I thoroughly enjoyed trying a little bit of everything when I spent a fortnight travelling around Serbia last winter.

My Serbia itinerary brings sews together the best parts of the country’s north for an easy 7-day tour by bus or train.

Based off the route I followed on my trip around the Balkans, it’s packed with actionable advice – including the best things to do in Serbia, instructions for getting around, and other handy tips.

Are you planning a visit to Serbia? – Don’t miss my in-depth guide to Novi Sad , Serbia’s coolest city. – Check out my Balkans Travel Guide for tips and recommendations for bordering countries. – If you love road tripping, don’t miss my Balkans road trip planner for inspiring routes around Serbia and beyond.

Serbia itinerary essentials

I travelled pretty extensively through all 12 Balkan states and I think Serbia is one of the easiest countries in the region for travellers. The intercity bus system is great and easy to navigate, accommodation options are plentiful, and English is widely spoken, which makes it easy to troubleshoot any logistical issues.

Here are my tips for planning the perfect Serbia itinerary.

Do you need a visa for Serbia?

Serbia’s tourist visa policy is very similar to the Schengen countries (although it is not included in the Schengen Area). Citizens of 96 countries (including Australia, the UK and the US) can visit Serbia visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Some nationalities (including some countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa) are required to apply for a visa in advance.

I recommend using iVisa to check if you need a visa and to apply for an expedited visa online .

Where to start your Serbia itinerary

Belgrade (Serbia’s capital city) is the country’s main transport hub and the natural place to start your travels if you’re flying into the country. There are also regular coach bus connections between Belgrade and neighbouring countries: Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Having said that, I don’t necessarily recommend starting your Serbia travels in Belgrade.

Belgrade is quite a polarising city that many people find overwhelming (or underwhelming, depending how you look at it). I wasn’t a huge fan of Belgrade myself, and I think that if I had started my trip there, it probably would have coloured my impression of the whole country.

Instead, I recommend you start your Serbia itinerary in Novi Sad, the second-biggest city, also located in the north. The two are a mere hour-and-a-bit apart, so you can easily transit to Novi Sad by bus after you arrive in the capital. If you’re flying into Belgrade, I recommend pre-organising an airport transfer to take you to the bus station.

Of course this is just my opinion – you could easily flip this itinerary and start with a few days in the capital before continuing north.

If you happen to be entering Serbia overland from Hungary, western Romania or eastern Croatia, you can easily find bus services to either Novi Sad or Subotica. We entered the country from Osijek in Croatia and had Novi Sad as our first stop.

A concrete building in Belgrade, Serbia topped with a Coca Cola advertisement sign.

When is the best time to visit Serbia?

Belgrade, Novi Sad and Subotica are all destinations you can visit at any time of year.

Because of the way our 6-month Balkans itinerary worked out, we ended up in Serbia in March, which was admittedly still a little chilly and grey for our liking. If I had a choice, I would visit Serbia in late springtime as this season seems to have the best weather conditions.

Summer (June to August) is the hottest time of year in Serbia, and temperatures in concrete-heavy Belgrade can be oppressive. On the other hand, summer and early fall is a great time to go hiking in Serbia’s national parks. If you’re interested in food and wine, fall is also great for experiencing the wine harvest .

Getting around Serbia by bus

Serbia’s bus system is one of the best we encountered in the Balkans. Services are plentiful, fares are well-priced, and in our experience, everything runs true to schedule. We travelled around the country (and the entire Balkans region) exclusively by coach bus. Lasta is the most popular and reliable coach company in Serbia.

I suggest using the Polazak website to find bus schedules and fares in English. We always bought our bus tickets from the station a day in advance – especially recommended if it’s summer or a holiday. You also have the option to buy your tickets online using the Polazak website, although extra charges usually apply.

Bus stations in Serbia have a few quirks. Some of the bigger stations charge entry to access the platforms (usually a couple of dollars equivalent in local currency), meaning you have to buy a platform token in addition to your bus ticket.

Coaches always charge extra for any luggage you want to store under the bus. When we travelled in Serbia, the cost was 60 denars (approx. 60 US cents) per piece of luggage. Bags are tagged before being stowed and you have to present your ticket stub to collect them again, so don’t lose it.

Hiring a car in Serbia

Self-driving can be a good option for confident drivers if you want more flexibility in your itinerary. Serbia has some of the best roads in the region and cheap car rentals; however fuel prices and tolls are on the expensive side. Here are more tips for driving in Serbia .

Personally I recommend using Serbia’s bus network – it’s cheap and efficient. If you do decide to self-drive, I suggest using the Discover Cars website to explore your options and find the best price on a rental. They aggregate a good range of manual and auto transmission cars from international hire companies, with the option to pick up a vehicle in either Belgrade or Novi Sad.

Click here to find a rental car in Serbia using Discover Cars.

Where to stay in Serbia

The final piece of the Serbia logistics puzzle is accommodation. Finding a place to stay in Serbia is very easy, especially in the cities. Hostels, guesthouses and boutique hotels are all widely available. Private apartments are also very popular and can be booked either through Airbnb or Booking.com.

We used Airbnb throughout Serbia and had consistently good experiences. As with the rest of the region, Airbnb is a great choice if you want something self-contained and well-priced.

I’ve included specific accommodation recommendations (including links to the places we stayed at) in the itinerary below.

How much to budget for your trip

Serbia is a very affordable travel destination by European standards. For context, we found prices cheaper than Croatia or Slovenia, but slightly more expensive than Bosnia and Herzegovina or Montenegro.

Belgrade was one of the more expensive Balkan capitals we visited. To keep costs down, I recommend using Airbnb and eating at local restaurants.

  • Budget traveller: 20-30 USD/day (hostel, buses, local meals)
  • Mid-range: 30-50 USD/day (guesthouse or Airbnb, buses & taxis, restaurant meals)
  • All-out: 50-100+ USD/day (boutique hotel, taxis & private transfers, restaurant meals)

We spent roughly 56,000 denars (approx. 570 USD) for two people for two weeks of travel in Serbia, excluding accommodation.

The perfect 7 days in Serbia itinerary

[belgrade] – novi sad – subotica – belgrade – tara national park (mokra gora).

This Serbia itinerary focuses almost exclusively on the north, with more options to continue your travels in the south at the end. True to my travel style, it prioritises culture, history, food and wine over outdoor activities – although there is one national park included.

As I mentioned, we spent two weeks in Serbia and followed this exact itinerary, albeit at a slower pace. I think one week is the perfect amount of time to spend in Serbia if you’re a first-time visitor and you don’t mind moving around at a reasonably face pace.

Days 1 & 2: Start your Serbia itinerary in Novi Sad

Serbia’s second-largest city and capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Novi Sad is the perfect introduction to Northern Serbia.

Novi Sad has a classic European feel thanks to its Hapsburg-era architecture and multitude of outdoor cafes. The Danube runs through the heart of the city, giving it notes of Budapest with a distinctly Serbian edge. One of the many must-dos in Novi Sad is to try the locavore restaurants and wineries that make use of local produce.

Roam the pedestrian boulevard in search of your next kafa hit, duck into Danube’s Park for a stroll under the trees, and seek out the pretty walkways and interiors along the main street.

Novi Sad was considered Serbia’s cultural capital up until the early 20th century and was at one time known by the nickname ‘Serbian Athens’ . This legacy lives on in the dozens of literary and music festivals held throughout the year, most famously EXIT Festival , which takes place on the grounds of Petrovaradin Fortress every summer.

In 2021, Novi Sad will take up its position as European Capital of Culture , an accolade that’s sure to cement its reputation as one of the loveliest cities to visit in the Balkans.

I recommend spending a full day in Novi Sad and adding an extra day to your itinerary for a side trip to the town of Sremski Karlovci.

Cafes and pastel buildings in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Things to do in Novi Sad

  • Saunter down Dunavska Street to Trg Slobode. Novi Sad’s pedestrian mall is lined with beautiful architecture, cute shops and outdoor cafes. The main square, Trg Slobode, is where you can find some of the city’s most spectacular buildings including the Name of Mary Cathedral.
  • Eat lunch at Project 72. A locavore feast in one of the city’s most beautiful dining rooms.
  • Sunset at Petrovaradin Fortress. Wander across the river to take in the views from Novi Sad’s fortress. There is an outdoor terrace bar perfectly positioned for a sunset view over the river. Arrive early to explore the complex, with its clock tower, draw bridges and stone tunnels.
  • Take a day trip to Sremski Karlovci. Northern Serbia’s prettiest town is just 30 minutes from Novi Sad by bus. Discover the Baroque architecture (including the colourful Grammar School) and visit the gorgeous Museum of Beekeeping. There are several small wineries in town that offer tastings (Podrum Bajilo and Winery Mrdjanin are both recommended). A local bus to Sremski Karlovci from Novi Sad costs 300 denars (approx. 3 USD) per person return.

For more excellent things to do in Novi Sad, read my Novi Sad city guide.

The town of Karlovci Sremski, an easy day trip from Novi Sad.

Where to stay in Novi Sad

When we visited Novi Sad, we stayed at this centrally located Airbnb . Nikola, the host, is very kind and helpful, and the location of the self-contained flat can’t be beat.

If you prefer a hotel, these properties are all centrally located and have excellent ratings (9/10 or higher) on Booking.com:

  • Budget hostel: City Hostel
  • Mid-range hotel: Garni Citi Hotel Veliki
  • Boutique hotel: Hotel Fontana

Day 3: Make your way north to Subotica

Subotica is located an hour north of Novi Sad, very close to the Hungarian border. A small, quiet city by any measure, Subotica is full of architectural treasures and stands out as my absolute favourite place in Serbia.

Subotica is normally associated with one thing: Art Nouveau . Along with its sister city Szeged over the border, Subotica boasts some of the most divine examples of this architectural style anywhere in Europe. The most famous of all is the Raichle Palace (pictured at the top of this article and again below), a private residence built in 1904.

Like Novi Sad, Subotica is an outdoor city whose streets beg for long afternoon walks. A day is the perfect amount of time to explore Subotica on foot, with time for a trip to Palic Lake in the late afternoon.

How to get to Subotica from Novi Sad

There are bus departures at least once an hour from Novi Sad’s MAS Central Bus Station to Subotica, starting from 6am and continuing until around 9pm. (Note that Novi Sad has multiple bus stations – be sure to double check in advance.) Travel time to Subotica is just over 60 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

When booked online through Polazak, Tickets cost between 4-7 Euros depending on the service. We paid 7.90 denars (approx. 8 USD) per person for tickets when we travelled. Check times and prices here .

Details of the painted facade of Raichle's Palace in Subotica.

Things to do in Subotica

  • Take a self-guided walking tour of Subotica’s architecture. Subotica Tourism has put together several DIY audio tours through the city that you can follow to see the prettiest buildings. We listened to three of the four tracks and really enjoyed the experience. Highlights of the Art Nouveau tour include the Town Hall building on the main square, the National Theatre and of course the Raichle Palace.
  • Go inside Subotica Synagogue. If Raichle Palace has the prettiest facade, Subotica Synagogue definitely holds claim to the most impressive interior. This is seriously one of the most evocative buildings I’ve ever been inside (I liken the experience to visiting the Sagrada Familia). Completed in 1902, it’s no longer active but has been expertly restored with help from the World Monuments Fund. The story of Subotica’s Jewish community is wrapped up in the building and is very, very moving – I highly recommend reading up before you go. The synagogue is open from 10am-6pm every day except Monday. Entrance costs 250 denars (approx. 2.50 USD) per person and is worth every cent.

The facade of Subotica Synagogue viewed from behind a black gate.

  • Eat lunch at Boss Caffe. Located in the courtyard behind Richle Palace, this local favourite features outdoor dining surrounded by flourishes of Art Nouveau. We ate here twice and really enjoyed the food. The menu is huge and well-priced; we paid 1000 denars (approx. 10 USD) for lunch for 2 people.
  • Take a side trip to Lake Palic . Just 10km from Subotica (around 20 minutes by local bus), Lake Palic used to be an elite spa retreat. It features yet more beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, most notably the Grand Terrace complex on the shore of the lake (it now houses a cafe), and a handful of villas tucked in the forest beyond. We walked around the lake accompanied by one of the audio tour tracks.

Where to stay in Subotica

We stayed at the cute Apartment Libra in Subotica , a very comfortable, well-positioned flat with a great kitchen. It was very warm and cosy in winter, and our host Ljubomir even picked us up from the bus station when we arrived.

Other options in Subotica:

  • Budget hostel: Hostel Put Svile
  • Mid-range hotel: Hotel Forum Garni

Days 4 & 5: Continue to the big city, Belgrade

Now that you’ve eased your way into Northern Serbia, it’s time to hit the big city.

Before visiting, I only ever associated Belgrade (the ‘White City’) with socialism and Yugoslav history, not realising that it’s actually one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe . Yes, it’s mostly grey concrete on the surface, but there are countless layers of Roman, Ottoman and Yugoslavian heritage to peel back, and no shortage of excellent museums and walking tours to help you do it.

For a balanced experience, I recommend dividing your time in Belgrade between the distinctive ‘old’ and ‘new’ (Socialist) parts of the city, located on the eastern and western banks of the river respectively.

How to get to Belgrade from Subotica

There are a dozen coaches to Belgrade from Subotica every day, departing from the bus station near the railway station and terminating at the BAS Central Bus Station in Belgrade. Buses start running in the early morning (around 4am) and continue until 6pm. Travel time is 3-3.5 hours depending on the service.

Tickets cost 8-12 Euros when purchased online. When we travelled, we paid 1,235 denars (approx. 12.70 USD) per person for tickets purchased at the bus station. Check times and fares here .

St Sava Church in Belgrade.

Things to do in Belgrade

  • Visit Kalemegdan Fortress. Belgrade Fortress sits at the confluence of the Danube and Sava Rivers and affords magnificent views of New Belgrade. Entrance is free.
  • Get hands-on at the Nikola Tesla Museum . Serbia holds claim to inventor and engineer Nikola Tesla as their favourite homegrown hero. His museum in Belgrade is fascinating – even (or especially) if you don’t know much about his work. The Tesla Coil Demonstration will make your hair stand up on end. Entrance to the museum costs 500 denars (approx. 5 USD) per person.
  • Visit the House of Flowers. This is the final resting place of another historical icon associated with Serbia, albeit for very different reasons. Josip Broz Tito’s mausoleum is an extravagant greenhouse-like atrium surrounded by lovely gardens. The adjacent Museum of the History of Yugoslavia is a huge, fascinating display of Yugoslav history. The whole thing is slightly macabre, but it’s a must-see in Belgrade

A collection of Yugoslavia-era artefacts on display at a museum in Belgrade.

  • Wander back in time in Zemun. Located behind New Belgrade, Zemun was described to me by a local as ‘a city within a city’, and it certainly feels that way. This was a separate town until it was absorbed into Belgrade in the 1930s, and locals have managed to hold onto that romantic small-town feel. You’ll find a picturesque town square, lively outdoor markets, and more cafes than you can count.
  • Summit Avala Tower for a view. This icon of Belgrade’s skyline was famously destroyed during the war and later rebuilt. Today it contains an observation deck and cafe at the top. Access to the tower is via a lovely hiking trail that starts on the outskirts of the city. Entrance costs 300 denars (approx. 3 USD) per person.

Read more: My complete guide to visiting Avala Tower from Belgrade.

The spire and walkway of Avala Tower, an iconic building in Belgrade, Serbia.

  • Bike around New Belgrade: The best way to explore New Belgrade, the western half of the city, is by bike. This area is pancake-flat and there are a number of pathways that link monumental concrete buildings such as the Hotel Yugoslavia with Belgrade’s vast commieblocks and pockets of green parkland. We joined a guided cycling tour with local company iBike and loved it.
  • Try a slice of Moscow Shnit. Belgrade’s favourite sweet treat is a delicious cake prepared at Hotel Moscow in the city centre. The recipe is a guarded secret, but I can tell you it’s very light and fruity (perfect for enjoying on the outdoor terrace under a blue sky). The hotel and cafe are iconic in Belgrade.

Where to stay in Belgrade

We stayed at the exceptional Downtown Art Deco Studio , located right in the centre of the city. It was one of the best apartments we stayed at anywhere in the Balkans.

Most Belgrade Airbnbs are concentrated around the northern end of the city on the eastern side of the river. This is also where you’ll find most museums and tourist attractions, plus some great restaurants.

I recommend staying in either the Skadarlija or Dorcol (the oldest part of Belgrade) neighbourhoods.

  • Budget hostel: Balkan Soul Hostel
  • Mid-range hotel: Hotel Rex
  • Boutique hotel: Mama Shelter Belgrade or 7 Rooms Suites

Days 6 & 7: Finish on a high in Tara National Park

It’s a bit of a mission to reach central Serbia’s western corner, but it’s more than worth the long bus ride. Tara National Park is the most heavily forested part of the country and is widely considered to be Serbia’s most pristine pocket of nature . Yet relatively few foreign tourists ever make it here.

Aside from hiking and river sports on the Drina , this area is also brimming with cute villages , history and culture, so there’s something for everyone at any time of year.

Tall trees and mossy rocks in Tara National Park in Serbia.

How to get to Tara National Park from Belgrade

There are no direct buses from Belgrade to the towns of Mokra Gora or Mitrovac, so you need to transfer through the town of Zlatibor to access the park.

There are a dozen direct buses to Zlatibor leaving Belgrade’s main station from 6.15am onwards. Travel time is around 4 hours , and tickets cost around 13 Euros (or 18 Euros return) when reserved online. Check times and prices here .

Travel time from Zlatibor to Mokra Gora is 30 minutes and can be done either by local bus or taxi.

If you want to avoid a long morning of travel and you have to get back to Belgrade for your flight home anyway, another option is to take a day trip to Tara National Park from Belgrade. This full-day tour includes transfers from Belgrade with a professional driver and a guide to show you all the highlights of the beautiful Drina River Valley.

We did something similar and visited Tara National Park on a day trip from Sarajevo.

Things to do in and around Tara National Park

  • Go hiking. There are marked trails all over the park, ranging from short day hikes to multi-day affairs. Most start from Mitrovac where there is a tourist office that can furnish you with maps.
  • Photograph the cute Drina River House. A wooden house perched on a stone in the river that marks the border between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, this is one of the icons of Tara National Park.
  • Admire the frescoes at Raca Monastery. A 13th-century monastery containing a set of important paintings. There are several hiking trails to fresh water springs in the area.
  • Visit the weird and wonderful Drvengrad village. Originally built as a film set for the movie Life is a Miracle, this charming model village has become a symbol of Serbia. The film director’s personal collection of vintage cars are scattered amongst the wooden houses and churches. There is a film festival held here every summer.

A vintage car and a traditional Serbian wooden house in Serbia.

  • Ride the historic Sargan Eight Steam Train. Construction on this narrow-gauge railway started during World War I to link Serbia and Austro-Hungary. Today it’s a scenic railway that runs between the towns of Mokra Gora and Vitasi via tracks that cling to the side of the mountain valley.
  • Catch the view from Banjska Stena. It was a sea of fog when we visited Tara National Park’s most famous viewpoint, but I’ve been reassured that the panorama is phenomenal on a clear day!
  • Venture to Zlatibor. Serbia’s most popular mountain resort town is located south-east of the National Park, in the shadow of Mount Zlatibor. Here you can find lovely accommodations and more hiking trails.

Where to stay near Tara National Park

The most popular places to stay when visiting Tara National Park are Mitrovac (a good base for hiking) and Mokra Gora . There are some lovely homestyle accommodations in and around the national park – my favourite is this sweet cabin .

See more options in Mokra Gora on Booking.com.

Extend your Serbia itinerary: Other places to visit

If you have more time, you might consider including one or more of these additional destinations to your Serbia itinerary.

Uvac Nature Reserve – add 1-2 days

Located south of Mokra Gora and Tara National Park, this park features biodiverse wetlands and a very picturesque winding river.

To get there, you can take a train to Nova Varos and spend a few nights inside the park, or you can join a day tour from Belgrade .

Nis – add 1-2 days

Serbia’s third-largest city, Nis is located in the country’s south-east, around 230km from Belgrade. It’s accessible by coach from the capital or if you want to add it to the end of your itinerary, you can take a bus from the city of Uzice near Tara National Park.

I didn’t get to visit Nis this time, but I’d love to go back and spend some time exploring the city that traditionally linked Belgrade and Istanbul. (I had no idea Nis was the birthplace of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.)

If you’re planning a visit, I recommend this guide to Nis.

Novi Pazar – add 2-3 days

Also located in southern Serbia, Novi Pazar has always been considered Serbia’s cultural and religious crossroads. It has a long and fascinating history, as evidenced by the many important monuments located in and around the city.

You can learn more about Novi Pazar here.

Onward travel from Serbia

If your flight home is departing from the capital, you can simply loop back to Belgrade from Tara National Park (departing Uzice or Zlatibor) by bus.

If you’re continuing on overland, you can transit west into Bosnia and Herzegovina (first stop: Visegrad) or north-west into Croatia. Another option is to head to Novi Pazar from Tara National Park then continue overland to Montenegro .

Can you cross into Kosovo from Serbia?

If you want to continue your travels in Prishtina and Prizren , you’ll need to read up on the different options for getting to Kosovo to Serbia. There are rules in place that could prevent you from visiting Serbia again in the future, so it’s very important you do your due diligence.

Refer to this detailed guide about crossing into Kosovo legally.

The 6 Best Serbia Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

The landlocked country of Serbia is considered by many to be a mystery, a place still delightfully off the tourist trail with adventures galore and the ever-present feisty Serbian spirit. If you are considering Serbia for your next vacation, rest assured that the best Serbia tours are designed to help you unearth all the best historic metropolises and amazing nature of Serbia that you likely have never heard about.

Don’t let this enigma or off-the-beaten-track nature fool you or taint your view of the country of Serbia. With tons of exploring, seeing, and doing, the country has made a strong comeback since the Yugoslav Ware era and is continuing to gain popularity for its affordable prices, beautiful cathedrals, and outstanding natural wonders. Yes, there are still ongoing issues with Kosovo and Pristina to the south, but for most life has very much moved on from this dark era in history.

The country is mainly known for its presence in Yugoslavia in the early 20th century. Previously ruled by the Ottoman Empire, the nation of Serbia was comprised of several countries in the area and in 1918, the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary became unified into one country called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.

It was then an independent nation. However, this changed when the country officially became Yugoslavia during the Great Depression. Even after the second world war, the region of Serbia within Yugoslavia was the most dominant and powerful region of Yugoslavia.

In the early 1990s when Yugoslavia’s states started to break away as independent, it left Serbia powerless and the country hit a standstill with record-breaking hyperinflation and a new currency.

The country has been working endlessly since to build itself back up and become what it was again. In more recent years, the country has started to come back. Tourism in the country is booming and better than ever and this is the perfect time to visit. Here are some of the best places to visit in Serbia that are almost unmissable.

Serbia’s capital and biggest city are Belgrade. Situated close to the Sava and Danube Rivers as well as the intersection of the Balkan Peninsula. The Population is roughly 1.6 million and it is one of the largest cities in the Balkans. Belgrade is a city so rich in history, culture, and precious 17th-century architecture, it will leave you completely speechless.

Start your adventure at the Belgrade fortress. Built in 279 BC the Fortress is considered one of the oldest in Europe. It is right on the twin rivers, in the urban, downtown area of Belgrade. It has been protected for centuries and was named a national landmark in 1979 and has been a top spot to visit in the city since. The Fortress also has a small zoo and park attached to it as well.

The Belgrade Fortress should be at the top of your list of things to do in Belgrade and is something truly remarkable. Visit the Nikola Tesla Museum. Built in Honour of the inventor, your museum gives you an up-close and personal experience and allows you to learn a bit about Tesla that you might have not known.

It has thousands upon thousands of Tesla artifacts including documents and journals from Tesla himself. It is well worth your visit. When the sun sets, visit the many bars and tasty restaurants in the city. The city is known for its great food and nightly atmosphere so it’s almost certain you’re going to have a good night.

Then there is Novi Sad, a place that some may consider to be the Athens of Serbia. Your heart will easily be won over by the relaxed atmosphere in Vojvodina’s capital of Novi Sad, Located in Serbia’s northern Province. Novi Sad is unique and unlike other destinations in the world.

Its ability to slow the concept of time with its relaxing atmosphere and stunning natural beauty gives many the opportunity to completely indulge, relax and decompress their mind, body, and soul. Novi Sad can be seen as therapeutic to some with its brilliant mountain views. The mountains wrap around the city and it almost makes you feel as though you are being hugged by them.

Even taking a walk through the city or taking a trip outside the city to the vast mountains and traditional cottages can be seen as relaxing. Visit the many cathedrals and Museums within the city. Take a walk down Svetozar Miletic Square and visit the many restaurants, shops, and cafes in the area.

The sheer beauty of the architecture in combination with some of the friendliest people in the world makes an experience you will always remember. Novi Sad is a must-do on your trip to Serbia and is enchanting all year round.

Serbia is a unique country and one off the beaten path. More often than not, the countries off the beaten path are the best ones. Having access or having the ability to plan and book all the excursions you want will be difficult because of this. It can also be tough trying to narrow down exactly what you want to do.

That’s why it’s always recommended to take an organized or even a group tour. This helps gives you an idea of not only the cost of things in the country but gives you an idea of what the best things to do and see are and provides you with a knowledgeable and more often than not, a local guide that will be there to help you get around and take you to some of the best places to see in the country.

So, much as we have done for the best Montenegro tours and best Slovenia tours , here we are going to be talking about one of the best Serbia tours (and their operators), so you can be inspired – and then choose with confidence.

Belgrade is a low-budget New York.

Whoever was fortunate enough to wake up in Belgrade this morning can consider that he has achieved quite enough in life for today. Asking for more would be immodest.

Dusko Radovic

Belgrade is becoming the key destination for travelers who seek for something different in a familiar European landscape.

…I had found the most beautiful place of antiquity, the overlarge city of Belgrade…

Despot Stefan Lazarevic

its rivers, its sky and its people. Out of these three primeval elements, the unique spirit of Belgrade is born.

Belgrade is a fantastic city, well connected with the world.

Andrzej Wajda

Belgrade is not in Belgrade, because Belgrade, in fact, is not a city-It’s a metaphor, the way of life and the way of seeing things

I came here because I have never been in this region before... In a very short time I have found two things, both important to me: the food is amazing, and the approach to cinema is far more intellectual than in America.

Jack Nicholson

It usually happens that a traveler goes to a famous place expecting a lot, and leaves disappointed and down. This happens with Athens, Rhine, St Peters Church in Rome. But then, I went to Belgrade not expecting anything- the decorations, the sights, not even the joy or anything interesting - and now I am a victim of its seductive charm, and I have to leave it with utmost pain. This is a new feeling: to fall in love with a city

Herbert Vivian

I am particularly impressed by the bright and warm atmosphere of Belgrade

Nature in Serbia – Pristine Land You Never Knew Existed

The abundance of nature in Serbia shows a beautiful side to the country that we rarely hear about. Here’s where to go to find it.

Nature in Serbia needs to be purposefully sought out in adventure. In the western reaches of Serbia, we moved through the Valjevo canyon like we were its first inhabitants, slowly and to a silence only broken by the trickling of the river which we would break with our steps as we crossed its winding paths over and over.

A steam train transported us through the fluttering green forests that started in Mokra Gora and spread beyond the mountain peaks on the steam-fuelled tracks of the Sargan Eight Railway.

An afternoon, flanked by the glorious sun, was spent following the gentle current of the mighty Dunabe river from the tiny beaches of Novi Sad to a narrow point that seemed like the tranquil end of its dominating course. On another, our tiny boat navigated the many bends of the 10-kilometre long Uvac River, hugged by the mountainous plateau.

Nature in Serbia – Pristine Land You Never Knew Existed

Nature in Serbia – Why You Need to Visit

The gradac river in valjevo, winding the uvac gorge, drifting on the danube, riding the sargan eight railway, want to experience nature in serbia pin it.

The ebbs and flows of Serbia do not only come from its social change since troubled times. A country that is 75% mountainous, it is scattered with forested hills, protected nature parks, canyons, rivers and lakes.

I spent a week exploring almost the full stretch of the country west of its Capital, Belgrade – from the coastline of Novi Sad to the valleys of Valjevo, mountainous Zlatibor and the expanse of Tara National Park to the colossal, snaking Uvac Gorge.

If there is one thing that Serbia is not necessarily known for, it’s an abundance of pristine nature that hasn’t been ruined by modern structure or capitalist gain. Moving through Serbia is to move with the earthly setting it bestows and to be active in order to enjoy its multi-layers of the landscape.

For when you strip away a complex culture and politics, the beauty of the landscape and nature in Serbia is the one thing here that has not ever changed.

Trekking in Serbia’s Best Scenery

The Gradac River runs through what is said to be some of Serbia’s best and untouched scenery. Steep slopes, high rock formations and cliff faces encase a shallow river that bends through the forests and meadows of this protected area in hues of white and silver.

Its trickling waters were our path markers as we trekked through the villages of Valjevo that lay hidden in this mountainous terrain – a 50km-long said to represent a natural border of northwest Serbia towards the south.

Wild Serbia , an adventure tour company set up by locals from this very area, take you into the very heart of the region – deep into the Canyon, through its woodland, and knee-deep into the icy-cold fresh waters flanked by bending trees and mud tracks.

Off-track and truly as wild as the name suggests (Wild Serbia manage tourism numbers here through guided visits), it wasn’t until I stumbled upon small groups of locals setting up tents and campfires, or swinging from tree ropes as they hit the water in a giggling mess, that I knew I had experienced a true local hideout.

The day ended with a feast of fresh trout (a prize of the waters) and fresh salads, dining with village locals who too were making the most of the very spectacular surroundings, that they could call their own.

Two groups of people walking through the open area of a forested gorge. Tree dotted rock mounds can be seen in the distance.

Visiting Serbia’s Special Nature Reserve

We arrived on a road that curved around the edges of the high cliff faces, and the first sighting was of a swing that just called for us to stop dead in our tracks and take in the view.

It was the flight of freedom upon entering the Uvac Gorge in southwestern Serbia. While only a bird’s eye view can capture the magnificent bends of this river, even this scene was enough to capture the sense of the many wild and free landscapes in this country.

Inching down a manmade dirt slope, we came directly to the riverfront where we could hire a boat and driver. Boat trips are the must-do here, where you feel as if you’ve been swallowed up by all the clichés of a spectacular natural landscape, floating through the gorge of the River Uvac in its hues of mirrored blues and greens.

Enjoy Serbia’s Biggest River

Of course, the biggest river that cuts through Serbia is the Danube – a mighty expanse that snakes through 10 countries, from Germany and Austria in the west to the Balkan plain (and eventually Ukraine).

On the calm waters of the Danube in Serbia, swim, canoe or leisurely bathe on the banks of Europe’s second-largest river, which you can easily enjoy on a journey from Belgrade to Novi Sad, a town located right beside it.

From the sandy banks that line Serbia’s second-biggest city of Novi Sad, we gently glided down towards a small sandy mound, akin to a secret island, before jumping in kayaks and paddling to the most serene corners.

Dunavski Rafting invites you onboard its wooden house-like boat and provides all the equipment you need to drift around, complete with a local guide who knows these waters all too well.

Serbia’s Best Rail Journey

Riding the Sargan Eight narrow gorge railway in southwestern Serbia through the mountainous valleys is a cultural rite of passage here, even if you only take a short half-hour journey. An avid train geek’s dream, the steam train’s emerald green shell sits within a setting akin to stepping back in time. Perhaps to the late 1900s, when it first ran its chugging, steaming course through narrow gauges from Sarajevo to Belgrade – a link that closed in 1974.

Now you can jump on board at the village of Mokra Gora and take in the barcode of tree trunks in a fluttering of green as you trundle through the Sargan pass that was rebuilt in the early 2000s.

A land of varied landscapes, it is Serbia’s natural treasures untouched by the controversy that give it a new lease of life, as well as hope for the local people to show off a beautiful side to the country that we rarely if at all, hear about.

These tours from Belgrade include the Sargan Eight railway. Choose from either the Western Serbia Scenery Tour or this Full-Day Guided Tour of West Serbia and see the Drina House, ride the Sargan Eight Train and visit the famed wooden village of Mokra Gora.

This Serbia nature trip was created in conjunction with the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia (NTOS) and iAmbassador for the #MySerbia campaign. All opinions remain my own as I set out to uncover all the countries that were once a part of the ‘former Yugoslavia’.

Beautiful post about Serbia! I have so many good memories from my childhood about the riverbank of the Danube in Novi Sad because my grandparents lived there. But haven’t travelled in Serbia as an adult -yet. 🙂

What to expect from this West Serbia Self-Guided Tour?

This tour will take you through two different but yet beautiful areas. Expect to learn more about turbulent Serbian history, try some of the best wines in hilly Sumadija, and explore beautiful Tara Mountain. All of that and much more are combined through different attractions and activities.

Our job is to make your reservations, detailed itinerary, tickets, and all information needed. Yours is to enjoy the adventure.

1st Day – Topola and wineries

Your journey starts just one hour drive from Belgrade, in a small town Topola. Here you will hear more about the Royal family Karadjordjević and its founder Karadjordje Petrovic. The main attraction is a remarkable St.George’s church in a white marble, which lies on a hill above the town. Besides the church, you will also visit two museums which hold many valuable artifacts from Serbian and European history.

Since this region is well known for its wine production, on the other side of the hill you will find a unique wine museum that is also related to the Royal family. Everything in the museum is authentic and dating back to the 1930s. The royal family still produces quality wines and after exploring the museum, you will have a chance to try some of their finest labels.

Just a few kilometers away, another great winery is waiting for you. Aleksandrovic winery is considered one of the best wineries in Serbia. Here you will take a small tour around the winery and try some of their products afterward. We recommend Prokupac, since it is a local indigenous variety.

The rest of the day you will spend in a charming household Colovic, which will be your accommodation for the next two nights. Warm and friendly hosts, great food and a chilling atmosphere promises good rest.

2nd Day – Exploring Rudnik Mountain and Rujevica winery

The day starts with a delicious homemade breakfast, you will drive to nearby Rudnik Mountain (1100m a.s.l) and spend some quality time in nature. During your hike, you will discover 3 viewpoints and enjoy the scenic view over the green Sumadija. The hike is not demanding and it takes app 3,5 hours to check all three summits.

After the hike, it’s time for lunch and the next stop will be a lovely family winery Rujevica. This place is not a typical restaurant, the local family owns the place and you can expect a warm hospital and good wines combined with delicious food.

The rest of the day you can spend exploring Kragujevac, the biggest city in Sumadija or relax at your accommodation.

3rd Day – Gems of Zlatibor Mountain

After breakfast, your West Serbia self-guided tour continues to Zlatibor Mountain. This day is reserved for exploring natural gems of Zlatibor, and the first stop is Stopica cave. The entry of the cave is one of the biggest you’re ever seen (20m high and 40m wide), and the main attraction inside are unique limestone tubs.

Shortly after the cave, you will visit Sirogojno ethnology museum and its unique open-air exhibition. Authentic wooden objects from the XVIII century are organized into two households and represent how people used to live in these areas.

A few kilometers from Sirogojno you will find Gostilje waterfall, another natural attraction. The lush green ambiance, many cascades, and rapids flowing from the waterfall make this place a true oasis of peace.

The last stop for today is a quite small village Ljubis. Your accommodation for two nights will be a lovely household Pecinar with warm hospitality and amazing local food.

4th Day – Sargan Eight Train Ride and Višegrad Town

In the morning after breakfast, you drive to Mokra Gora and take a famous Saragan Eight train ride. This authentic train will take you back to the 1930s and some romantic times. The ride lasts app 2,5 hours and takes the passengers on the most exciting railway in Serbia, through the intact nature of Mokra Gora (Park of Nature). The whole experience is enhanced with spectacular views along the way.

After the train ride, the road will take you to Bosnia and Hercegovina and Visegrad town. This town is well-known for its UNESCO heritage site from the XV century- a bridge over the Drina river. Besides this impressive bridge, you will visit a popular tourist complex which is dedicated to a famous Serbian writer and Nobel prize winner Ivo Andrić. Also, it is possible to organize a boat ride and enjoy the view from the river.

On the way back to Ljubis, you can visit the authentic wooden town Kustendorf and treat yourself to a delicious local cake or pastry.

5th Day – Exploring Tara Mountain

The last day of your West Serbia self–guided tour is reserved for Tara Mountain and more activities in nature. The first stop is Mitrovac where you’ll take a walk through the forest and look for a unique phenomenon – carpet meadow which is believed is older than humankind. From there a forest trail will take you to the magnificent viewpoint Banjska stena.

After enjoying this splendid view and wandering around the forest, you will continue towards the foothill of Tara and look for an interesting river Vrelo which is only 365m long. Even though it is one of the shortest rivers, its ambiance and surrounding make it a true gam of nature.

The last stop on your West Serbia self–guided tour is probably the most intriguing sight. Drina house stands for generations in the middle of the river and attracts visitors from all over the world.

The start is at the Perućac dam. From the attractions on the tour, you will see the waterfall on the river Vrelo and Little House on the Rock at the Drina river where a tour ends. The tour length is about 15 km.

Small river Vrelo the river is located near Perućac, at the entrance to the Drina canyon. It is 365 meters long, so many say that the Vrelo River is long - one year.

Little house on the Rock at the Drina river is one of the symbol of the town Bajina Bašta. The wooden cottage on an isolated rock in the middle of the Drina River was first built in the summer of 1968. A group of boys made a place to rest on a rock from a nearby collapsed shed to protect themselves from the sun. Swollen Drina took the planks off the rock that fall, but the idea remained. The following year, in the summer of 1969, the first cottage on the rock was built. The material was transported to the rock by boats and kayaks, larger pieces were lowered into the water, then were grabbed, pulled out of the water and brought to the rock. Thus began the story of a rock cottage that lasted for many years.

With its water levels, the Drina flooded, demolished and carried the house several times. However, it is always being repaired or new was built. It is now a tourist attraction that is being visited by more and more tourists. National Geography magazine dedicated a number to it when it was named one of their photos in August 2012 in one of their competitions. This caused a lot of worldwide attention, so on March 9, 2013, the English Daily Mail devoted it article, wondering how the house had resisted the wild nature for so many years. The "Business Insider" ranked in the top 16 strangest houses in the world.

For those who want, kayaking can also be extended to Rogacica. In that case, the length of the kayak tour is 26 km.

The deepest and most impressive part of the canyon is built by the Drina, climbing the slopes of the Mount Zvijezda, wherein some parts the canyon is deep and up to a thousand meters. The canyon is embedded in massive and rarely layered middle-eastern limestone. The canyon sides are very steep with numerous ponds and scum, covered with forest and shrub vegetation, but often vertical, bare rocky surfaces occur. Apart from Pancic Spruce, there are other rare and relict species such as black hornbeam, and black pine. There are also rain-forests on the edges of the Drina canyon, such as Topli Do, or beech forests in Raca Canyon. Drina Canyon is also a permanent habitat of brown bears and chamois.

In Visegrad, at the point where the mountains that make up the narrow and deep canyons of the Drina split into a vast valley, stands a stone, 500 years old the Mehmet-pasha Sokolovic Bridge with 11 broad-leaved lanes, known by everyone as "The Bridge on the Drina” (na Drini ćuprija). The bridge is about 250 meters long and about 10 meters wide, except in the middle where it is expanded with two terraces, on each side one by one. Andricgrad was created as the idea of the famous director Emir Kusturica about a stone medieval town inspired by the work and characters of the Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andric. In architectural terms, the city itself is a mixture of different epochs and styles that have been shifting through the history of this area: The Byzantine style, the Ottoman period, the Renaissance, the classicism. During the walk through the main street-corset, visitors will be able to return to the past which connects two periods - fragments of the Renaissance with the Ottoman period and Byzantium.

The largest part of the lake is located in the Drina canyon, which starts 7 km from the dam. This canyon section is surrounded by a steeply bank bordered by rock cliffs and stone blocks that plunge vertically into the water.

There is a beach on Lake Perucac which has pontoons with swimming pools for children. The swimming area is surrounded by buoys, with lifeguards on the shore and a lifeboat on the water constantly present. There are also showers, slides, and jumping boards. It is possible to rent pedal boats, boats, and kayaks there. There are good restaurants nearby.

Zaovine Lake is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Serbia. It is located on Tara Mountain near the village of Zaovine. The water is very clean, with little treatment in the water treatment plants, it is used for drinking.

The lake was formed between 1975 and 1983, when the Beli Rzav stream was blocked by dams near the peak Kik (958 m). At the highest water level, the lake surface is at an altitude of about 880 m. The maximum depth is about 110 meters. The lake is being filled by two streams Konjska Reka and Beli Rzav. The lake is an accumulation of the reversible hydro-power plant "Bajina Bašta" in Perucac with which it is connected by a vertical pipeline.

There are not many beach facilities on the lake, but swimming in the clear water of this mountain lake is a real pleasure. It is located near the dam Lazići and the restaurant Tarsko jezero, which offers a beautiful view of the surroundings and the small lake Spajići. You can leave your car or bike near the beach in a small parking lot.

7) Watch the bears from the National Park Observatory

What to do in tara national park if you are interested in wildlife watching, mountain tara is known as a natural habitat for brown bears (ursus arctos) with over 50 individuals in the area..

It is not common to meet them because they are afraid of people. When a bear senses the presence of a human, it immediately leaves the area, mostly before we notice it. However, that still can happen. The risk of attack is low. Bears only attack humans if they feel threatened, when they are provoked or when they protect the cubs.

However, if happens that you meet a bear, the most important thing is to stay calm and act responsibly. Do not run away but slowly go back.

The Tara National Park offers the opportunity to see a brown bear in its natural habitat, from safe observation points at feeding sites.

Feeding sites are places where bears are fed at times when experts estimate that there is not enough food in nature. Of the total 4 feeding sites, 2 are available for tourists.

Bears watching tours are being organized for small groups (maximum 3 people) in the presence of the Tara National Park ranger. They can be in the early morning or afternoon lasting for 4-5 hours. Tours are organized between May and October. It is necessary to check the available dates and prices a few days earlier.

After a multimedia presentation on the Tara National Park and a story about the brown bear monitoring program, the off-road rangers drive you deep into the woods. After exiting the vehicle, you'll walk a few hundred meters and get to the observation deck where you'll wait for the appearance of bears in complete peace.

You are very likely to see a bear, but since it is a wild animal, it is not fully guaranteed that you will see it. During earlier tours, the success rate was 60%.

Keep in mind that wild animals have their own way of life, while humans are just trying to get them as close as possible in their natural habitat.

8) Visit cultural and historical monuments and tourist attractions near Tara

What to do in tara national park if you are more interested in culture and history the surroundings of tara are full of cultural and historical monuments from various historical eras that you can visit..

The most known is the monastery Rača, that has been a source of spirituality and literacy in this part of Serbia since the twelfth century. It was erected by the Serbian King Dragutin in the former Sokolska land. It was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt from ashes.

Medieval fortress Solotnik (Kulina or Kulingrad) is a fortress near the village of Solotuša, 10 km south of Bajina Basta on the slopes of Tara. It is situated on a stone hill that steeply descends into the Solotusa River.

There is not much historical data on the construction, but it is assumed that the fortress was erected in the Middle Ages to provide a road linking Uzice City and Visegrad. In its immediate surroundings there are remains of settlements from the time of the Celts and Romans. Today it is mostly in ruins, of which the rampart of a rectangular base with the rest of the entrance was held.

In Perucac and Rasiste there are Stećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Mramorje or Bagruša is a medieval necropolis of stećak tombstones, located in Perućac and one of the most preserved necropolises in the area. The necropolis was formed in the fourteenth century and had about 200 tombstones, made of hard limestone, the largest specimens reaching a length of 2 meters, with a width and height of almost 1 meter. Later sources record the number of 122 monuments, while, according to the latest figures, there are 93.

As you can see, there are numerous opportunities in Tara National Park for one fulfilled vacation. We believe we inspired you to for its exploring.

Tour Serbia

Inspiring you to tour Serbia's areas of natural beauty, diverse wildlife and share your authentic travel experiences

Serbia is a landlocked country in Central and South eastern Europe, with a population of over seven million. It borders Hungary to the north, Romania and Bulgaria to the east, Macedonia and Kosovo to the south, and Montenegro to the west. Despite its small size, Serbia is home to varied landscapes and an abundance of natural beauty.

From the peaks of the towering Balkan Mountains down to the rolling hills and plains of Vojvodina in the north, via dramatic gorges, river canyons and pristine forests, there is plenty on offer for nature lovers in Serbia. The Danube River flows through much of the country, forming a beautiful and diverse ecosystem and providing ample opportunity for outdoor pursuits such as fishing, kayaking and rafting.

In the west of Serbia, the impressive Tara Mountain Range stretches along the border with Montenegro, offering great hiking opportunities and some of the best views in the country. The resorts of Zlatibor and Kopaonik offer skiing in winter and beautiful mountain scenery year-round. And finally, no overview of Serbia’s natural beauty would be complete without mentioning the eerie but stunning Djerdap National Park, home to Europe’s largest gorge.

So if you’re looking for a nature-packed holiday destination, consider Serbia – there’s something for everyone!

18 Most Beautiful Places in Serbia

Serbia is a very diverse country, with attractions that vary from its stunning natural sites, picturesque towns, and some of the best foods in the region. Serbia is home to unique nature attractions including the largest desert in continental Europe and the most amazing archaeological site that provides a glimpse into prehistoric times.

In this list, I have put together the most beautiful places in Serbia so that you can plan your holidays making sure to check the most popular destinations in the country. I personally love towns like Sombor and Apatin where life is slow-paced and unhurried, as well as the hiking trails and diverse terrains in national parks such as Tara and Fruska Gora.

But Serbia is so diverse that I am sure you will find something that fits your taste as well. Without further ado, here is my list of the most beautiful places in Serbia.

The ultimate list of the 18 most beautiful places in Serbia

1. belgrade.

Serbia - Belgrade

The capital of Serbia, Belgrade is a vibrant metropolis known for its beautiful architecture, fabulous museums, and exciting nightlife. There is no shortage of tourist attractions here.

I know it may sound like a cliché to say that Belgrade is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Serbia, but the old town is so well-preserved and lively that I truly believe it belongs on this list.

Learn about the history of Yugoslavia at the Museum of Yugoslavia, see the iconic Kalemegdan Fortress, visit the bohemian Skadarlija, or spend a hot summer day at Ada Ciganlij where you can go swimming and kayaking. In the evening, dress to the nines and dance the night away at one of the trendy nightclubs.

2. Novi Sad

Novi Sad

Nestled on the banks of the Danube River, Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina and the second-largest city in the country. From the amazing Petrovaradin Fortress where the world-famous Exit festival takes place every summer to the picturesque city center and several amazing parks, the town is packed with attractions worth visiting.

Beach-goers can spend a day on Strand , while shopaholics can pay a visit to the newish Promenada mall. To shop for local produce, get up early in the morning and go to Riblja Pijaca. The nearby Dunavska Street is a great place to go for a stroll. Novi Sad is also home to several museums and art galleries.

3. Lepenski Vir

Welcome to Lepenski Vir, a famous Mesolithic and Early Neolithic archaeological site located on the right bank of the Danube River in Serbia . NY Times actually wrote about this place, calling it “An Archaeological Puzzle on the Danube”. The culture of this archaeological site is around 8,000 years old .

Discovered back in the 1960s, Lepenski Vir provides a glimpse into prehistoric times with unique sculptures, rivers stones, and shrines. I have to admit that the carved faces with round eyes and fish motives look quite haunting.

4. Deliblatska Pescara

Many people don’t know this, but Serbia is home to the largest desert in continental Europe . Located in the Northwest of Serbia, Deliblatska Pescara dates back to the Ice Age and is one of the most unique nature reserves in the region.

This Geo-morphological formation is spread across an area of 300 square kilometers. It’s actually a perfect picnic spot for nature lovers, so it is a destination that definitely deserves its spot among the list of the most beautiful places in Serbia.

Pay a visit to this 12,000-year-old site to admire the beauty of its sandy terrain. Often called “the European Sahara”, Deliblatska Pescara is also home to more than 1,000 plant species. Book a tour of Deliblatska Pescara here .

5. Fruška Gora National Park

hiking in fruska gora

Nature lovers searching for a perfect weekend getaway in Serbia can spend a day at the beautiful Fruška Gora National Park . Located just a short drive from the city of Novi Sad, this national park is known for its scenic hiking trails, vineyard-covered hills, and pristine lakes.

Whether you wish to visit wine estates , enjoy panoramic mountain views from viewpoints like Orlovo Bojiste, or just hike along well-marked trails, there is so much to look forward to when visiting this place. Fruška Gora National Park is also home to more than 15 Orthodox monasteries.

6. Đavolja Varoš

Serbia - Đavolja Varoš

Next on my list of the most beautiful places in Serbia is Đavolja Varoš or Devil’s Town . You will find this unusual rock formation created by soil erosion on Mount Radan in southern Serbia. According to local legend, these 200 unique rock formations are actually the remains of wedding guests who refused the Devil’s orders to accept a wedding between a brother and a sister.

There is also another explanation, a more reasonable one. This geologic phenomenon was created by soil erosion. From 2 to 15 meters tall, these strange rock columns vary in size.

7. Sremski Karlovci

Serbia - Sremski Karlovci

Wine lovers on vacation in Serbia will want to pay a visit to Sremski Karlovci. This picturesque town in Vojvodina is known for its baroque architecture, gorgeous squares, and rich cultural heritage. Admire the beauty of the Patriarchate Court building, snap a photo in front of the charming Four Lions Fountain, or have a memorable gastronomic experience at the Pasent Restaurant in Sremski Karlovci.

The town is also home to many cool wineries. Travelers can spend the entire day visiting wine cellars and tasting rooms. Make sure you try the local Bermet dessert wine which is only made here in Sremski Karlovci. This spiced wine was extremely popular among Austro-Hungarian royalty in the 18th century. It was even served on Titanic!

Check out this day tour from Belgrade including a stop in Sremski Karlovci.

8. Tara National Park

Serbia - Tara National Park

With dense forests, charming waterfalls, and pristine lakes, Tara National Park is a mecca for nature lovers visiting Serbia. This expansive park is a great place to enjoy activities like hiking, rafting, and bird-watching.

No visit to Tara is complete without checking out the park’s beautiful lakes, Perućac and Zaovine. Here, you can rent accommodation right on the water and spend the day swimming and kayaking on the lakes. Tara National Park is also home to the rare European brown bear.

You can visit Tara National Park as a day trip from Belgrade if you don’t have much time available in the country. This is a great tour option to do so.

9. Gornje Podunavlje

Located in the northwest of Serbia, Gornje Podunavlje is one of the best-hidden gems in Vojvodina . If you are an outdoorsy person and wish to reconnect with nature, this nature reserve will leave you breathless with its wetland forests, meadows, river islands, swamps, and ponds.

Looking for accommodation? You will find rural households available for rent in weekend settlements like Kenđija and Baračka. Gornje Podunavlje is the perfect place for nature lovers; you will find more than 260 species of birds and over 1,000 plant species here.

10. Drvengrad

Serbia - Drvengrad

Have you heard of the renowned film director Emir Kusturica? Well, Drvengrad was built as a film set for one of his movies. Nestled high up in the mountains, this picturesque village oozes charm at every turn with its quaint squares and cute wooden houses.

It’s basically an ethnic open-air museum known for its rustic charm. The mountain views from the village are simply breathtaking. Drvengrad is also a place that hosts a wide range of cultural events like concerts, film festivals, workshops, art classes, and much more.

11. Uvac Gorge

hiking in uvac serbia

Uvac Gorge is not only one of the most beautiful places in Serbia; I dare to say it is also one of the most beautiful places in the entire Balkan region .

Uvac Gorge is, without a doubt, one of the most photographed spots in the country. If you are after the perfect photo, go to one of the twelve lookout points above the gorge. If you have a drone, this place will be paradise for you.

The views of the majestic hills and the pristine river are spectacular, especially from the Molitva Peak viewpoint . Travelers can also hop on a boat ride to experience this special nature reserve from a different perspective.

12. Golubac Fortress

Serbia - Djerdap Golubac fortress

History buffs vacationing in Serbia can look forward to visiting the 14th-century Golubac Fortress . Nestled on the edge of the Danube River in Eastern Serbia, the fortress is one of the most important historic sites in the country.

It was built to protect the Serbian state from conquerors. The fortress was also a place where the Ottoman Empire and Hungary clashed . Today, Golubac Fortress is a popular weekend getaway spot for both local and international tourists visiting the country.

Most travelers visit Golubac Fortress as a day trip from Belgrade. If you are interested in the same, check out this tour option .

13. Studenica Monastery

There is no shortage of awesome monasteries in Serbia and Studenica is one of the most beautiful ones .

Established in the 12th century, this medieval monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of two white-marble churches and a few other historic buildings. The larger church is called the Church of the Virgin, and the smaller one is the Church of the King.

The monastery was founded by Stefan Nemanja, the first ruler of the medieval Serbian state. Step inside to find several amazing thirteenth and fourteenth-century frescoes including the famous Studenica Crucifixion. You can visit Studenica on this day tour from Belgrade.

14. Vrnjačka Banja

Serbia - Vrnjacka Banja

The town of Vrnjačka Banja is one of my favorite weekend getaway spots in Serbia . With many hot springs , it is the most popular bath town in the country. Travelers can look forward to visiting healing and recreational hot springs properties here in Vrnjačka Banja.

In addition to hot springs, Vrnjacka Banja has many cute bars, restaurants, and green areas where visitors can enjoy nature. In summer, the town hosts a few music festivals worth checking out. If you are visiting Serbia in winter, you will be pleased to hear that some of the best ski resort towns in the country are located just a short drive from Vrnjacka Banja.

15. Zasavica Nature Reserve

Add a visit to Zasavica Nature Reserve to your Serbia travel itinerary and you won’t be disappointed. A great place to reconnect with nature, this protected and special nature reserve is an ideal destination to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities.

Whether you wish to hop on a boat ride on the Umbra Boat, enjoy activities like sport fishing and hiking, or stay in one of the campsites equipped with water and electricity, there is something for everyone. Zasavica is home to more than 200 bird species, as well as 600 plant species.

Stop by the amazing Visitor’s Center, a large building where you will find a cool ethnic room that is fitted with a bunch of interesting agricultural tools from the early 20th century. The visitor center also has a nice restaurant, as well as a few accommodation options.

16. Kopaonik

serbia - kopaonik

If you are into winter sports like skiing and snowboarding , spend a few days in Kopaonik. What I like about this skiing resort is that it is reasonably priced, especially when you compare it to other popular ski resorts in France, Switzerland, and Austria.

The ski resort in Kopaonik is typically open from December to April, has around 20 lifts, and many options of places where you can rent skiing equipment. Even though Kopaonik is one of the most beautiful places in Serbia during the winter, you can also visit Kopaonik in summer to enjoy outdoor activities like bird watching, mountain climbing, and hiking.

Serbia - Sombor

I think that Sombor is one of the most underrated and beautiful places in Serbia . Known for its lovely downtown area, impressive architecture, and delicious cuisine, this picturesque town in Vojvodina truly has it all.

Sombor is also one of the greenest cities in the region with hundreds of giant trees scattered throughout the city center. Art lovers should visit the 19th-century Milan Konjović Gallery in Sombor. Foodies will want to go to “ Carda Andric ” which is located on the outskirts of the city and try the signature fish stew (paprikash).

18. Palic Lake

Last on my list of the most beautiful places in Serbia is the picturesque Palic Lake . Located just a short drive from the city of Subotica and the border with Hungary, Palic Lake is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors on the weekends.

With a beautiful lake, art nouveau architecture, and a few wineries, Palic is a destination to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet. If you are visiting in summer, see a movie at the Palic Film Festival which is one of the oldest film festivals in the region.

And this is a wrap on the list of the most beautiful places in Serbia . Even though all of these 18 locations are definitely worth a visit, I did my best to make this list as diverse as possible so it can cater to everyone’s preferences.

Whether you prefer nature or city vibes, I am sure you will find incredibly beautiful locations in Serbia for your next vacation.

Flooding in a Kenyan Natural Reserve Forces Tourist Evacuation

The heavy rains that pounded East Africa for weeks, killing hundreds, have spilled into the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife national reserves.

An aerial view of a flooded nature reserve.

By Mohamed Ahmed and Emma Bubola

Mohamed Ahmed reported from Mombasa, Kenya, and Emma Bubola from London.

Devastating floods that have killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands more in East Africa are now inundating parts of the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife national reserves.

On Wednesday, the Telek River broke its banks and overflowed into parts of the natural reserve, flooding many tourist camps. A spokesman for the Kenyan Red Cross, Munir Ahmed, said that more than 90 people have been evacuated, some by helicopter. Others fled through the water.

“The situation in Masai Mara is so bad,” said Daniel Ikayo, the owner of a safari company that operates there. “There is water everywhere.”

The floods in the reserve have added to the heavy damage to key economic resources in Kenya, including livestock, crops and infrastructure.

“We are seeing a disaster unfold,” said Bryan Adkins, who heads a trust that helps protect the Kijabe forest, which has also been decimated by the floods.

Only part of Masai Mara has been affected, said Mohammed Hersi, director of a safari company and the former chairman of the Kenya tourism federation. But Alfred Mutua, the country’s tourism minister, warned on Wednesday that all hotels and camps near rivers and within national parks and reserves should prepare for potential evacuation in case rivers overflow.

Kenya’s long rainy season, which runs from April until June, is not a prime time for tourism, but those who are there now have found their plans upended. “People don’t want to come here to drive around in a lake,” Mr. Adkins said.

The Telek River lies across the “ Great Migration ” route from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara, and from July to October, over a million wildebeests and zebras cross over — an event that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world.

On Monday, flash floods sent a deluge of muddy water over an area in the Rift Valley region in southern Kenya, killing at least 45 people, sweeping away houses and damaging roads. In total, 179 people have died in Kenya since the flooding begun, and many more have been killed across the whole of East Africa. The floods were particularly deadly in neighboring Tanzania.

With the rains expected to continue, Kenya’s presidential office on Wednesday issued an evacuation order to people residing in risk areas — near, for instance, rivers, dams and reservoirs — to evacuate within 48 hours. Over 30,000 people have already been displaced.

Mr. Ahmed, of the Red Cross, said that in total, 45 roads and over 370 water sources had been destroyed, and over 600 businesses and 35,000 acres of crops affected. People who lived off small businesses, like avocado farms or tractor businesses, lost their livelihoods, local residents said.

What the final economic impact of this year’s inundations might be is unclear, but according to a recent report by the African Climate Foundation , climate-change-related events like floods and droughts led to losses of 3 to 5 percent of the country’s gross domestic product from 2010 to 2020.

According to the report, the frequency and intensity of such events is likely to increase.

Forecasters with the Kenya meteorological department warned on Wednesday about “a surge in rainfall intensity across multiple regions of the country from Thursday through the weekend.”
