A trip to Lawrence road in Amritsar

Amritsar is regarded as a holy city because Shri Harmandir Sahib popularly known as Golden Temple is situated here. People from far of distance visit the city to offer prayers in Gurudwara Sahib. You can spot many NRI’s in this city. Leaving this Amritsar is also famous for the old city or the streets it has. Among them, one is Lawrence Road which is visited by a large number of people. This street is loved by all the foodies and nobody can miss it if you want to have the actual Amritsari taste.

1. Lawrence Road a food paradise

Lawrence Road is a big street where you can keep walking and enjoy the Amritsari Pehnawa and the taste. This road is full of shops. The very famous fruit cream started from here. The Sukhram’s  Fruit Ice Cream and Durga’s fruit cream is a must try on this road. You can never have such tasty dish from anywhere else. Other than this there are many food shops from where you can try a iety of food. From the famous Bhature Channe to the Tikki Chaat Papdi everything is amazing here. Once you are in this street you won’t say a no to food it’s just yum. Other than this if you crave for Pizza of the Kentucky Fried Chicken than also you can stay on this road as Pizza Hut, KFC and many other national and international food hubs are present there. Even you can spot the street hawkers which sell those Imli Wala Laddu, Mungfali, Popcorn and such eateries which you have enjoyed during your childhood. You can just enjoy the iety. Being the most famous street of Amritsar it is mostly busy.

2. It’s time for shopping

Leaving aside the food section Lawrence Road has much more. For the shopping lovers, you have ended to a right place. You actually need a full day to shop the beautiful things present here. From the traditional gotta Patti suit to the Phulkari Dupattas, you can get everything. Other than this the typical Punjabi jewellery such as Tikka, Saggi Phul, Jhumke, Waliayan all are available here with different designs and colour. You will go mad as they have so much iety of it.  Other than this How can you forget the famous Punjabi Jutti? Yes, you can get that too. From the Mirror Work Jutti to the Floral Ones or the typical Traditional Punjabi Jutti which is running since ages, you can find all of them.   Leaving the traditional section this market has other branded showrooms for men and women from where you can shop. Brands like Kazo, Madame, Levis are present on this road from where you can buy clothes and accessories.

So now as you are full of shopping bags, your trip to this road won’t mark an end till you buy the Famous Amritsari Pappad and Wadian. Do take them back to your home as they are delicious.

7.30 am – 9.30 am: Visit the glorious Golden Temple and have a holy meal in breakfast

We suggest you start your first day in Amritsar by visiting the most iconic attraction in the city – the Golden Temple also known as Harmandir Sahib. One of the most celebrated gurudwaras in the world and the holiest shrine for the Sikhs, the temple stands amidst a tranquil water body, offering a spellbinding sight to visitors. While the sanctum exterior is adorned with gold foil, the inner walls feature exquisite meenakari work, glasswork, and semi-precious stones.

• Timings:  4.00 am to 11.00 pm; every day
• Soak in the serenity of the temple
• Listen to soulful melodies and bhajans
• Relish the kada prasad
• Sit near the sacred pond for sometime

Once you have spent enough time at the temple, it’s time to take a long drive to Wagah Border that marks the boundary line crossing between India and Pakistan.  

• By road: 60 minutes’ drive

3.30 pm – 6.30 pm: Watch the Change of Guard ceremony at Wagah Border followed by a quick bite at the famous Sarhad Restaurant

Located at the Radcliffe Line, the Wagah Border or Attari-Wagah serves as a border crossing and a transit point between India and Pakistan. Make sure to reach the border at least an hour before the ceremony to get a seat.

7.30 pm onwards: Enjoy your dinner and relax

After the long day, you are longing to stretch your feet and relax in the comfort of your room, aren’t you? You can have your dinner at the hotel or a nearby restaurant. Catch a good night’s sleep to re-energize yourself for a fresh round of sightseeing on the following day.

A 31-kilometer drive west from the city center of Amritsar will take you to the border of Pakistan , where a curious border-closing ceremony takes place at sunset every afternoon. Full of pomp and circumstance, the Beating Retreat Ceremony involves an ostentatious display of goose-stepping guards from the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers saluting each other, lowering and folding their flags, and closing the gates at the border.

The experience gives tourists (typically seated in a special VIP section , once they flash their foreign passport) the chance to see the stark differences between Pakistan and India. The year 1947 was a big one for India. Not only was it the year that India gained its independence from Great Britain, it was also the year it split into the two different entities of India and Pakistan–an event known as the Partition of India.

Tourists in Amritsar can learn about this defining moment in history at the Partition Museum, the only institution in the world devoted entirely to Partition. It features a haunting collection of newspaper clippings, antique photographs, and oral histories with people who experienced the violence leading up to the separation of the two countries, and the resettling of refugees after the event. Bharawan Da Dhaba , located kitty-corner to the Partition Museum , whips up downright decadent Amritsari kulcha (mildly leavened flatbread) stuffed with Indian cheese or potatoes and served with spiced chickpeas.

Tear into the Punjabi breakfast staple of chole puri (puffy bread with chickpea curry) at Kanha Sweets , just a block away from the BBK DAV College for Women .

You'll wander down dark, narrow passages that lead to garish rooms covered in mirrored mosaics , walk through the open mouths of funhouse-style animal carvings , see giant wooden cobras, and crawl through a watery cave to the shrine of Lal Devi .

Another popular thing to do in Amritsar is visit the Sri Ram Tirath Temple. Located about 12 kilometers west of the city center, this Hindu temple honors the birthplace of Lava and Kusha, the twin brothers of the hero of the Ramayana epic, Rama, and his wife Sita.

Built by Muhammad Khairuddin roughly 150 years ago, this mosque is an impressive example of Islamic architecture. The stately green-and-white structure features three domes and four minarets, along with intricate artwork on its walls.

More than just a beautiful sight, Khairuddin Mosque is also an important historical attraction for its role in India's struggle for freedom. This is where Tootie-e-Hind, Shah Attaullah Bukhari, urged the Indian people to fight back against the British colonizers.
