Red Routes — Critical Design Paths That Make or Break Your App

Identifying and optimizing the most critical ux journeys, or red routes, will help you retain customers on the most frequently-used user journeys..

Red Route

Origin of the Red Route

Introduced in London in 1991, red routes are major roads on which vehicles are not permitted to stop. Their goal is to allow high traffic volumes to flow freely without obstruction. Typically, red routes are marked with red lines on the sides of the road .

When applied to design, these red routes are the critical and frequent paths that users take to complete their tasks.

Identify Red Routes

Red routes are:

  • Critical . Without these routes, your product would not deliver any value.
  • End-to-end tasks with multiple steps or actions , not single events. For example, clicking a “Sign Up” button is an action, not a route. However, user registration from beginning to end would be a route.
  • Frequently utilized . They will often capture the use cases of 90%+ of all users.
  • Built for scale . They are high volume user journeys that funnel a majority of your product traffic.
  • Key value drivers. They drive your key business metrics.
  • Objectively successful . You should be able to clearly define what success looks like.
  • Tied to critical product metrics . Your red routes directly impact your bottom line and have a substantial impact on user experience.

Building a Red Route Matrix

A great exercise is to think about the applications that you use daily and think about your habitual and repetitive tasks. Could these tasks be optimized? Would you still use the app if more friction was introduced to these tasks? Here are some red route examples from more common apps:

  • Rider Red Route: Requesting a ride
  • Rider Normal Route: Adding a payment method
  • Driver Red Route: Accepting a ride
  • Driver Normal Route: Changing profile settings
  • Guest Red Route: Booking a room
  • Guest Normal Route: Leaving a review
  • Host Red Route: Managing reservations
  • Host Normal Route: Updating listing pictures

Here are some examples of red route matrixes that you can build. The top right is your most frequently and widely used feature, while the bottom left is your least used and more narrowly tailored feature.

Red Route Matrix

Benefits of Identifying Red Routes

Identifying red routes helps your team prioritize user needs and facilitate alignment amongst your stakeholders. It also helps avoid scope creep and the introduction of extraneous/ancillary features.

Most importantly, it helps your team build and optimize product features that deliver the most value to your customers and drive your key metrics.

Red-Eye Express: Southwest Adds Overnight Flights On 10 More Routes

  • The 10 additional routes will have overnight flights from March 2025.
  • This means the carrier plans 15 such services, with more coming.
  • Sacramento-Baltimore will become the carrier's longest red-eye service for now.

In July, Southwest revealed its first overnight flights, with five routes having such flights on February 13, 2025. They'll land on Valentine's Day; nothing shows love more than arriving dirty, tired, and groggy. According to the carrier’s latest schedule update, another 10 routes will have such services, with more coming. This article contains the latest information as of August 27 .

While Southwest has not had overnight services in its 53-year history, it has many departures leaving at 05:00 and many arrivals landing after 01:00. Until 2017, Southwest couldn't schedule overnight services due to its old reservation system. The interest after seven years is undoubtedly partly because of the carrier's new shareholders .

Welcome To The Red-Eye: Southwest Schedules Its 1st Ever Overnight Flights

Five daily services are planned at first.

More routes with overnight flights

While the start dates and the specific routes and flights are subject to change, the latest additions are as follows. Atlanta , Chicago Midway, Denver, Houston Hobby, Sacramento, and San Diego will have their first Southwest red-eye services. At just 1,208 nautical miles (2,237 km), Los Angeles-Houston Hobby is the carrier's shortest overnight route (for now). As always, all times are local:

  • San Diego-Baltimore : 21:35-05:20+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Sacramento-Baltimore : 21:55-05:50+1 (daily; begins March 6); see below
  • Las Vegas-Atlanta : 23:00-05:45+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Los Angeles-Chicago Midway : 23:20-05:15+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Las Vegas-Nashville : 23:30-05:00+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Denver-Baltimore : 23:45-05:00+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Las Vegas-Chicago Midway : 23:55-05:20+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Los Angeles-Houston Hobby : 23:55-05:00+1 (daily; begins March 6)
  • Phoenix-Atlanta : 23:55-05:20+1 (daily; begins March 6); 23:05-05:30+1 from March 9
  • Phoenix-Orlando : 23:55-05:50+1 (daily; begins March 6); 22:55-05:50+1 from March 9

Sacramento to Baltimore to return

Southwest served the 2,081 nautical mile (3,854 km) airport pair between August 2016 and August 2020. After a nearly five-year absence, it will return on March 6, 2025. For now, at least, it will be the airline's longest overnight service .

Get tickets here!

When the route started in 2016, flights mainly left California at 06:00 and arrived in Maryland at 14:05 local time. Returning, they departed at 13:20 and arrived at 15:50 local.

Revealed: Southwest Airlines Top 10 States For Flights

How many can you name, and which do you think have changed the most?

Things will be very different this time. On Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays in March 2025, flights will leave Baltimore at 09:25 and arrive at 12:25. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 11:15-14:10. On Sundays: 13:05-16:00. On Saturdays: 20:15-23:15. Back to the East Coast, the schedule will be 21:55-05:50+1.

That makes 15 routes (for now)

The first five routes with overnight flights are as follows. The schedules have been double-checked and are correct as of August 27.

  • Los Angeles-Baltimore : 21:30-05:20+1 (daily; begins February 13)
  • Las Vegas-Baltimore : 22:00-05:30+1 (begins February 13)
  • Las Vegas-Orlando : 22:50-06:05+1 (begins February 13)
  • Phoenix-Baltimore : 23:05-05:10+1 (daily; begins February 13)
  • Los Angeles-Nashville : 23:45-06:00+1 (daily; begins February 13)

Red-Eye Express: Southwest Adds Overnight Flights On 10 More Routes

red route travel

The Red Rock Byway along State Route 179 in Sedona was named the most scenic, distracting roadway in the U.S., according to a new study.

The study, published by personal injury law firm  Jason Stone Injury Lawyers , analyzed the nation's roadways based on scenic factors that could distract drivers' attention.

The research focused on All-American Roads, which are byways recognized by the Federal Highway Administration as intrinsic tourist destinations, worth the drive for their "one-of-a-kind features."

Jason Stone analysts ranked the most distracting scenic All-American Roads based on how many related hashtags each of them has on Instagram and the number and quality of TripAdvisor ratings.

Here's a roundup of the most distracting scenic roads in the U.S. and how to safely drive them.

Why was Red Rock named the most distracting roadway in the U.S.?

The iconic red sandstone canyon near Sedona city measures only 7.5 miles. It takes about 20 minutes to finish the drive, but you'll likely want to spend some more time stopping at safe areas to admire the scene and grab some photos.

According to the Jason Stone law group, the mesmerizing views along Red Rock Byway make it easy for drivers to get distracted. Some people might even be tempted to slow down as they reach a particularly eye-catching view, analysts said.

In the end, it's hard not to get distracted from Sedona's awe-inspiring mountainous landscape. But here's how you can safely do this scenic drive without risking your and your loved ones' safety in the process.

5 best things to do in Sedona: Where to hike, see red rocks, shop and spot wildlife

How to safely drive a scenic road

  • Before embarking on your scenic drive, ensure your vehicle is in optimal condition. Check fluids, brakes, tires, and other essential components.
  • Make sure your tank is full before starting your journey, especially since gas stations may be sparse in mountainous areas.
  • Make regular pitstops along the way to enjoy the scenery. Use roadside pullouts for scenery stops and allow faster vehicles to pass at legal pullouts.
  • Stay alert and focus on the road to avoid drifting into oncoming traffic.
  • Have an alternative driver always available.
  • Inform someone of your travel plans and pack extra supplies such as food, water, clothing, first aid kit and tools in case of emergencies.
  • Use brakes cautiously. Avoid continuous braking down steep grades to prevent overheating. Use the tap method and anticipate turns to maintain control.
  • Ensure your headlights are functional and use them during low visibility conditions to make yourself visible to other drivers.
  • Plan your route on a paper map before departure, as GPS devices may be unreliable in remote areas.

The most distracting scenic roads in the U.S.

Here are the most distracting scenic roads in the U.S., according to Jason Stone Injury lawyers.

The Golden Rules of Road Tripping

Ahhhh, the great American road trip . A chance to put rubber to pavement along our millions of miles of roads and see the nooks and crannies of the country we’d never otherwise see. Road trips can be truly transformative travel journeys, a meditative way to traverse the countryside, meeting interesting people and exploring unusual sites. They’re also a chance to connect with your fellow road trippers, engaging in hours of conversation you wouldn’t have time for at home.

Along with all that good stuff, road trips have the potential for some big pitfalls, too, and in order to make sure your road trip is more life-changing than life-ruining, there are some basic guidelines first-time and veteran road trippers should follow. So, we talked to the experts (including a gas station food evangelist) who shared their savviest road trip tips and tricks—from how to mentally (and physically) prepare for long road ahead to logistical planning recommendations.

Book your hotels ahead of time

When you see a strip of hotels off an Interstate exit hundreds of miles from the nearest city, you may wonder how they ever fill all those rooms. That is, until you need a room and find they’re all sold out. Booking hotels in advance might lock you into ending your day in a certain destination, but it also saves you some headaches.

“If you’re okay with a roadside motel, you might be ok just picking a random spot. But if you want something a little nicer, don’t count on rooms being available,” says Condé Nast Traveler luxury travel specialist Jonathan Alder.

But you don’t always have to sacrifice flexibility and spontaneity for the promise of a place to sleep. “I normally book hotels in advance of the trip, but I like to change my mind on things sometimes,” says Darley Newman , host and producer of PBS’ Travels with Darley . “And if I wanna change the plan to be able to cancel 24 hours in advance, I think it’s really helpful. So I'll pay extra to do that.”

Roadside diners, food trucks, and yes, even gas stations, may surprise you with their tasty regional food.

Search out your roadside meals

It might be tempting to make a highway exit franchise row your lunch stop. But settling for processed tacos or sub sandwiches can mean missing out on some fantastic regional food .

“Some of the best expressions of regional food flavors and unique culinary styles can be found in gas stations,” says Frank Beard, a traveling sales rep who’s become an evangelist for the convenience store industry, and once spent an entire month eating at only gas stations . “Just because someone has four walls and a gas pump doesn’t mean they can’t do something different.”

Some of his favorites include Papu’s Café in Kansas City, who has a top-tier chicken shawarma sandwich; Pig Trail Cafe in Arkansas, who puts out one of the best burgers in the South; and Dallas’ Chef Point Café , another gem which has appeared on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Make sure your tires are filled and your fluids are topped off

Much like drinking enough water and sleeping eight hours a night, car maintenance is something you know you should do, but don’t always practice. But out of all their road trip tips, experts insist this is the biggest factor that’ll help prevent a disaster on the road.

McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty, an auto enthusiasts association that plans road trips for its members, emphasizes the importance of making sure your fluids are topped off and the oil is changed. “I also tend to change my batteries out if I’m going on a long drive,” he adds.

Alder concurs: “Check your tires before you go on a long trip to see if anything is too thin,” he says. “You don’t wanna be stuck 500 miles from home and find out one of your tires is getting old and needs to be replaced. Same with coolant and oil. If you’ve got an electric car, you don’t have those but you still need to top off your wiper fluid. You’ve still got bugs stuck to your windshield.”

Bring enough food and water

“The snack situation is key,” says Newman. “You don’t wanna be hungry. That’s the worst. Make sure that everybody is gonna be okay if you’re traveling in a group, because if something goes wrong with the weather or planning you want everyone to be okay for a few hours.”

It’s doubly important for water, she says, because being dehydrated is even worse than being hungry. She suggests packing a case of water in the car, and using reusable bottles to fill up wherever you can to be a little more sustainable. And packing extra water for high-altitude drives.

“Especially if you’re going into altitude,” she says, “People don’t realize if you’re going through Colorado, driving up and down, you have to get acclimated. So bring plenty of water for that one.”

Pack a bag for your car too

Your car is as much a part of your road trip crew as the people inside it. So just like you pack a bag with snacks and water for everyone riding along, you should also pack a bag for your car. “Don’t just pack your own bag, pack a bag of a few extras for the car itself,’ says Hagerty. “Rags, ways to clean the windshield, a jack is always helpful. Most people don’t need to bring a lot of tools along, but I always bring a multi-tool and a flashlight too.”

10 Trips in the United States Everyone Should Add to Their Bucket List

Packing your bags—and the car itself—in an organized fashion can save you future frustration on long drives.

Pack the car the same way every time

One of the biggest headaches on any road trip is tossing the entire contents of your car onto the asphalt as you frantically search for a phone charger you packed…somewhere. Though it might sound slightly OCD, packing your car the exact same way, every day, solves this problem, and everyone in the car will know exactly where their stuff is. It also keeps you from having to reimagine how to creatively stuff nine suitcases in the trunk of a Prius every morning.

“I pack the same pieces of luggage every time and load them in the same order, in the same spots so I'm not playing Tetris every time we get in and out of the car,” says Elizabeth Narins, who works for the Hotel Lilien in the Catskills and makes regular family road trips to Boston, New York City, and Washington DC. She says the practice is especially helpful for families. “The stroller always goes on top so it's easy to make impromptu stops and lug the kids and their stuff. I hate clutter but can't tell you how many times all of this stuff came in handy and made impromptu park stops so much more fun for my kids.”

Don’t depend entirely on your phone’s maps

Our over-reliance on technology never becomes more obvious than when your cell signal goes out in the middle of nowhere, and all of a sudden you’re stuck navigating remote mountain roads without a helpful voice telling you when to turn. This is why going old school and learning how to read a paper map can be a valuable backup, as can downloading directions offline.

“When you’re off the beaten path, you don’t know what you’ll find in terms of cell coverage,” says Beard. “It’s helpful to download offline maps to your phone (you can click to download it). Your GPS will always work but if you get into an area where towers aren’t good or you can’t get data, you don’t want to have to navigate out.”

Open yourself to spontaneity

There is a fine line between effective planning and overplanning, but nearly all the experts agreed that you always want to leave room for spontaneous side trips. “Leave enough time to have those moments of randomness,” says Hagerty. “You really can’t do that if you’ve mapped out every minute of every day.”

Even if you do your research and plan out roadside attractions to visit , you may discover there’s even more to see along your route. So leaving time to explore them is important.

“Several times I thought I’d researched everything, then you see something on the side of the road that’s quirky or interesting,” says Beard. “I was on a road trip and thought I’d found all the best gas station food, then I see this plume of smoke coming up from the side of the road in Missouri. And it was this truck stop where they had a homemade, chain-drive smoker, and it was some of the best barbecue of my life.”

Use the bathroom whenever you have the chance

In a larger group, nothing will throw you off schedule faster than an unsynchronized bathroom schedule. So Newman says to make sure everyone goes when you take a bathroom break, regardless of whether they think they have to. “I traveled in the desert of Jordan with the Bedouin and they have an expression: If you see shade, use the shade. It’s the same thing: Find the bathroom, use the bathroom, “ she says. “So if you are hitting a rest stop and someone in your group is like, ‘Oh, I don't really have to go right now,’ and they're drinking a Big Gulp, you need to be like, ‘Hey, you need to use the restroom, please. Let's just be on the same page about it.’”

Good music and good conversation are two of our favorite parts about a long road trip—so be sure to leave room for both.

Make some playlists, but don’t fill every minute of the ride

The music you listen to can be as much a part of the road trip experience as the food you eat and the scenery outside. Listening to curated road trip playlists don’t just ensure you have good music, they can expose you to other people’s musical tastes as well. “Having good music can make for a better road trip,” says Newman. “I love that sometimes, I'm listening to other people's music, and then I'm putting it on my own Spotify on that trip. So I think it can be a fun way to get a trip going.”

But filling every minute of the drive with music can also cheat you out of quality conversation time—a rarity in today’s busy world. So Hagerty suggests turning the music off for a while and seeing where the talking takes you. “You get to have long conversations you don’t get to have with people at home,” he says. “Deep stuff. And you can connect thoughts to completion, which is so rare in life, so my wife and I plan conversations for these 100-mile drives.”

Limit driving to four to six hours per day

If you’re just trying to get from A to B as fast as possible, four to six hours of driving isn’t going to cut it. But if your road trip is equal parts journey and destination, Alder says your road time should top off somewhere in this range. “If you plan more than [4 to 6 hours], you're just gonna be spending all your daylight hours driving versus getting out and going shopping at some cute little country store, or stopping for a great lunch, or experiencing something that's just amazing you've never heard of in your life,” he says. “And getting that opportunity also means not burning yourself out.”

If you’re driving electric, plan meals with your charging stops

Alder, an avid Tesla driver, insists you can make long distance road trips in electric cars , especially with Tesla opening its vast network of supercharging ports to all electric cars by next year. Still, charging your car will take longer than filling a gas tank, so using that time wisely can help make the most of your road trip. Tesla’s app, as well as several other EV apps like PlugShare, will show you where charging ports are located all along your route.

“I'll sit before I go on a road trip and look at not only where the chargers are, but at what restaurants are next to the chargers,” he says. “So if I don't like anything at one charger, I can look and see there's another one three miles down the road that has something perfect. That way not only am I using that time for a nice lunch and enjoying myself, but I won’t have to do a separate charging stop.”

Let stuff go

Even the best laid road trip plans can get thrown to the wayside, whether because of road closures, weather, car issues, or any of the other litany of things that can arise along the way. Newman says the most important thing you can do is maintain a good attitude, and accept the hiccups as part of the experience.

“You really have to just roll with it,” she says. “You're gonna hit traffic, there's gonna be issues. So if you can just be a little more relaxed about it, that is probably my number one rule. Just don't get too upset about anything because it's really just not worth it.”

Ukraine war latest: Russian drones 'stray onto NATO soil', as Moscow claims to have control of town just 15km from key city

NATO members Romania and Latvia report that Russian drones may have crashed on their soil during overnight attacks on Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia claims to have captured Novohrodivka - a town just 15km from the key city of Pokrovsk.

Thanks for following along today.

Today saw further Russian advances into Donetsk - as a looming direct assault on the key logistics hub of Pokrovsk draws closer.

All indications suggest that Ukraine's Kursk operation has not deterred Russia's military command from targeting the city.

Elsewhere, Kyiv and Moscow continued to trade drone attacks across the border, with a number of fatalities in Ukraine.

And on the international scene, under-fire German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a renewed effort to bring peace to Ukraine.

We'll be back tomorrow with more updates.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for a renewed effort to bring peace to Ukraine.

Speaking to broadcaster ZDF in a televised interview, the German leader said he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had both agreed in recent talks on the need for a new peace conference that would include Russia.

"I believe that now is the time to discuss how to arrive at peace from this state of war, indeed at a faster pace," Mr Scholz said.

Ukraine in June hosted delegations from 92 countries at a first summit in Switzerland to advance its blueprint for peace, but notably did not invite Russia.

The chancellor is under significant pressure in Germany after all three parties in his centre-left coalition suffered significant losses in regional state elections, while groups who oppose further funding for Ukraine won more votes.

Overnight, at least two people were killed and four more were injured by Russian air attacks in the Sumy region of Ukraine.

These images show firefighters attending the scene and looking for survivors.

The number of people killed in a Russian attack on a Ukrainian military academy in Poltava has risen to 58, the governor has said.

The official number of dead after Tuesday's attack stood at 55 until this morning, when three more people died in hospital, Filip Pronin said.

Funerals were held yesterday for some of the dead.

Ukraine's first lady had said the attack on the academy had also seen ballistic missiles strike a nearby hospital.

Shortly after Romania reported that a Russian drone entered its airspace and was looking for fragments on its own soil (see 12.41pm post), fellow NATO ally Latvia has done the same.

"On 7 September (yesterday), a Russian drone has fallen in Rēzekne region," a statement from the country's defence ministry read .

"It entered our airspace from Belarus," it added.

"The national armed forces are acting in accordance with the established procedures, including informing the NATO command."

Latvia has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022 - with President Zelenskyy keen to point out that, should his country fall, countries such as Moldova, Estonia and Latvia would be at risk from further Russian expansion attempts.

Russian shelling has killed three women in a small village in the Donetsk region, the local governor has said.

Vadym Filashkin said Russian forces hit the village of Cherkaske with cluster munitions this morning, killing the women, aged 43, 45, and 53.

The attack also injured a man, and damaged at least nine private houses and cars, he added.

It comes after at least two people died and four injured by overnight Russian air attacks on the Sumy region (see 7.36am post).

By Deborah Haynes , security and defence editor

The head of the CIA has warned that any move by Iran to supply Russia with ballistic missiles for its war in Ukraine would be a "dramatic escalation" - but Ukrainian sources say this has already happened.

It is part of a pattern of ever-tighter cooperation between Moscow and Tehran which has already seen the Iranian regime transfer huge quantities of killer drones, ammunition and artillery shells in return for cash and help from Russia on improving its own military technology and manufacturing capabilities.

This includes the alleged gifting by the Kremlin to Iran of captured Western weapons, such as the N-LAW anti-tank missile.

A Russian drone violated Romanian airspace during overnight attacks on Ukraine, according to officials.

The incident occurred as Russia carried out attacks on "civilian targets and port infrastructure" across the Danube River in Ukraine, Romania's ministry of national defence said.

Romania deployed F-16 jets in response and NATO allies have been informed, it added.

Romanian emergency authorities also issued text alerts to residents of two eastern regions, and authorities are now looking for drone fragments that may have landed on its soil.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Romania has confirmed drone fragments on its territory on several occasions, most recently in July this year.

To great surprise among allies and enemies alike, Ukraine has managed to successfully launch - and maintain - a land grab of Russian territory.

For more than month, Kyiv's troops have occupied a significant portion of the Kursk region - up to 1,300sqkm if Ukrainian estimates are to be believed.

While holding the land opens up the prospect of a territory swap later down the line, one of the shorter-term aims was to force Russia to redirect its considerable forces inside Ukraine a little closer to home.

But are Russian troops actually being pulled out of Ukraine and away from their previous objectives?

Ukraine's GUR military intelligence chief Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov said yesterday that the invasion had signalled theatre-wide impacts on Russian offensive operations.

He claimed Ukraine had successfully disrupted Russian plans for the rest of August, but admitted that Russian military command is still committing most available manpower to achieve their objectives in Russia's "main direction".

He was almost certainly referring to Pokrovsk.

The city has been under aerial bombardment and is slowly being advanced upon by Moscow's troops, with the nearby town of Novohrodivka and village of Kalynove claimed by the ministry of defence in the last two days alone.

It's home to a major logistics hub used by Ukrainian forces, which services the eastern region of Donbas.

Analysts, including experts at the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), have noted intensifying Russian operations around the city are taking place in spite of the Kursk invasion.

Interestingly, "ISW has not observed intensified Russian offensive operations in other frontline areas in Ukraine" - suggesting that the Kursk operation has had at least some impact in forcing Moscow to redirect its forces.

However, Moscow's military command has "almost certainly decided to prioritise Russian advances near Pokrovsk" and is "committing available manpower and materiel to the area at the expense of Russian offensive operations in other directions".

Can Russia capture Pokrovsk and defend Kursk at the same time?

Russian military bloggers don't seem to think so.

Voenkor Kotenok claimed manpower constraints meant it was unlikely that Russia could claim Pokrovsk and kick Ukraine's forces out of their defensive positions and back across the border.

He also claimed Russian forces are continuing offensive operations around Pokrovsk despite being "exhausted" and "exsanguinated".

ISW suggested that Russian forces will likely eventually take the city, but there is a possibility that troops will completely tire before then.

Watch: Russian forces fight in Kursk region

Will winter impact fighting?

Winter is not far away now and conditions along the front will be massively impacted.

Lie Gen Budanov said yesterday it would complicate Russian operations, but did not think that it would stop them completely, comments echoed by the ISW.

"The fall mud season has historically hampered Russian and Ukrainian ground manoeuvre, but periods of prolonged freezing temperatures that typically begin in late December freeze the ground and allow armoured vehicles to move more easily than in autumn and spring months," ISW said.

"Fall and winter weather conditions will likely complicate Russian and Ukrainian battlefield activity, but are very unlikely to completely stall activity along the frontline."

Russia is waging a "reckless campaign of sabotage" across Europe, the heads of MI6 and the CIA warned.

Sir Richard Moore and Bill Burns also said the UK and the US faced an "unprecedented array of threats".

The best and worst airports to have a red-eye flight, according to a travel expert who flies 200,000 miles a year

  • Travel expert Gilbert Ott shared his favorite and least-favorite airports for red-eye flights.
  • Ott emphasizes the importance of sleeping on the plane, and arriving refreshed.
  • He highlights the role of restful lounges, healthy food, and transit ease at airports.

Insider Today

Flying through the night can be ideal for those trying to save time while traveling long distances — assuming you can sleep and arrive feeling refreshed, Gilbert Ott told Business Insider.

And he would know — the travel expert who flies 200,000 miles a year on average has had his fair share of red-eye flight experiences.

"People shouldn't hate on red-eyes — I think they can be really cool," he said. "But you don't want to show up haggard."

Ott added that restful lounges, healthy food, and ease of transit can make some airports better for red-eye flights compared to others. He shared with BI his favorite and least favorite airports for nighttime flights.

Los Angeles International Airport is one of the best for red-eyes with a wide variety of healthy eateries, Ott said.

red route travel

"Most red-eyes involve jet lag because you're usually crossing a time zone, which is the reason for the red-eye," Ott told BI. "I try to eat before I fly on a red-eye because sleeping on the plane is vital . You want to try to get all the Zs you can."

When it comes to departure airports for night flights, Ott appreciates having healthy food options.

"I don't want to eat greasy fast food before I hop on a plane for six hours," he added. "I like a place that has a Chopped, a sushi kiosk, poke bowls, or anything that's a little bit lighter and easier to manage."

For example, Ott said Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has various healthy eateries, from the lounges to the food courts.

At LAX, travelers will find soups, salads, smoothies, and avocado toast.

"That's a game changer because then you can eat before you fly and get all the rest you need," he said. "And when you get on the plane, it's just about maximizing the rest."

John F. Kennedy International Airport also has quality food options, in Ott's opinion.

red route travel

Like LAX, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) has healthy options, Ott noted.

"They've done a good job of courting in a few decent restaurants," he said. "They have lots of lounges and there are lots of ways you can access the lounges ."

Ott highlights the  Amex Centurion Lounge  and the  Chase Sapphire Lounge , which has dishes like farm-raised Atlantic salmon over braised leeks for light, healthy options.

"All of these spaces do a better job than fast food," he added.

And there's no better sushi than at Tokyo International Airport, Ott said.

red route travel

At Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) , Ott said he's dined on the best sushi he's ever had.

"You can get it before your flight and carry it on," he said. "I love that."

Singapore Changi Airport is a great option for red-eyes because of the array of food and lounges, in Ott's experience.

red route travel

" Singapore Changi Airport is always the leading G.O.A.T. of local food stalls," Ott said. "Some of the best local food is at the airport because famous places in Singapore set up locations there."

Ott added that the airport has impressive lounges with luxury amenities.

To Ott, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is another leading airport for local cuisine.

red route travel

Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is another airport with a wide selection of local foods, Ott said.

"They've tried to flip the model of having big chains and have hyper-local places that deliver an authentic Parisian experience," Ott told BI.

"Travel can feel very stale. It can feel very boring. So I think when you bring in something that makes people feel like they're in a certain place — that's a really cool thing," he added.

Ott said Stockholm Arlanda Airport is one of the best for red-eye arrivals because it's easy to get to your destination.

red route travel

When it comes to red-eye arrivals, centrally located airports with efficient mass transit are ideal, Ott told BI.

"Proximity to the city is the biggest clutch thing for red eyes. I would shout out that Stockholm Arlanda Airport has amazing train links," he said. "They leave all the time, they're reasonably priced, and it takes 20 minutes to get to the center of town."

Conversely, Ott said Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the worst for red-eyes because it serves mostly fast food.

red route travel

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is generally a good airport — especially for lounges, Ott said. Still, its restaurants make it less ideal for red-eye departures.

"Atlanta's food options are weak," he said. "It's very fast-food-oriented."

While London Heathrow Airport can be great for some arrival passengers with lounge access, it's one of the worst for departing red-eyes because it's tough to get around.

red route travel

Ott said that Unlike Stockholm,  London Heathrow Airport  isn't well-connected, making it a drag for red-eye flights.

"I hate Heathrow for departure for red eyes," he said. "There aren't many of them, but it's just a long grinding airport — everything is disjointed."

At the same time, Ott said Heathrow can be great for arrivals if you're a rewards member of Virgin Atlantic or British Airways — which have lounges exclusively for arriving passengers.

"A great red-eye experience occurs when airlines curate it for frequent flyers or business-class travelers , including what they need when they land," he said.

For example, Virgin Atlantic's arrival lounge offers custom breakfasts and shower suites.

"They have the perfect setup for helping you freshen up," he said. "A lot of red-eye customers are flying for work and don't want to show up to work smelling like a sewer without having brushed their teeth."

Ott has found that small regional airports are some of the worst for red-eyes — like Hollywood Burbank.

red route travel

Not many small regional airports have red-eye flights, according to Ott.

"For the most part, red-eyes are more focused on those hub cities where they get people from all the regional airports into their big flying hub and then ship them off from there," he said. "Most red-eyes have a transatlantic or transcontinental demand, with very few exceptions."

He added that one of these exceptions is Hollywood Burbank Airport in California, which has red-eye flights to New York.

Hollywood Burbank has fewer food and lounge options than larger hub airports , which Ott understands because regional airports are smaller.

"I think there's just an inherent advantage to being a big airport because big airports can attract retail," he said.

However, it's worth noting that Hollywood Burbank Airport has one of the shortest walks to the gate in the US.
