Parents to learn more about youth mental health crisis with Tuesday's Children's Hospital Colorado townhall
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Parents have the chance to learn more about the current state of mental health in Colorado kids on Tuesday night with the Children’s Hospital first townhall of the year.
11 News spoke with the Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs, who is trying to address mental health concerns before kids reach the point of needing hospital-level care, after launching a kids mental health state of emergency in 2021. Doctors say kids mental health often gets worse during the end of the school year in April and May, as well.
“The youth mental health crisis actually started having an increase prior to the COVID pandemic. Once COVID-19 hit, we saw an even bigger increase in that, and it’s continued to increase since... So, that means were seeing a lot more kids with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and being at risk for harming themselves or potentially other people,” said Dr. Ashley Hayduke of Children’s.
Children’s reports Colorado adolescents ages 11 to 18 have seen their rate of poor mental health double since 2018. In 2023, Children’s Colorado saw almost 10,000 mental health patients in its System of Care.
Doctors tell 11 News they have also recently seen more physical symptoms connected with mental health, like nausea or vomiting. But, long treatment waitlists, due to the amount of kids needing services, are causing some delays in getting help.
“It’s really important because the sooner that they can identify their kids are starting to struggle with things like anxiety and depression, the sooner they are able to get treatment. The sooner they start getting treatment and help with that, the better their outcome will be for improved systems overtime,” said Hayduke.
The virtual Mental Health Townhall to ask experts questions, get stress management tips, resources available, and more is Tuesday, April 23rd from 6-7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Families can register here.
