10 Best Places To See Giraffe On Safari

herd of giraffe by a lake Chitwa Chitwa South Africa giraffe safari

Giraffe are one of Africa’s most mesmerising animals.  Spotting a head peering over the top of an acacia tree or admiring the effortless ease with which they canter across the plains never fails to delight.  They are rarer than many would think, with current estimates suggesting around 111,000 individuals – a drop of nearly 45,000 from the mid 1980s.  Split into four distinct sub-species, they can be seen in a variety of locations throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

1. Where can I see the biggest giraffe herds?

Large herds gather in Selous, Tanzania

You can see groups of up to 50 giraffe in northern Selous, Tanzania, and Murchinson Falls National Park, Uganda.  Back to Top

Northern Selous, Tanzania

The Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is perhaps the closest Tanzania gets to a true wilderness paradise, a fantastically large, remote region – the size of Switzerland and the biggest reserve in East Africa – and with plenty of water, opening up a whole range of activities other parks can only dream of.

Bailey’s Banda private house and pool, Beho Beho, Selous, Tanzania

Stay at Beho Beho where open plan stone and thatch cottages offer glorious views over the landscape beyond, or opt for Bailey’s Banda, still part of Beho Beho and close to the camp, but a lovely private house for those seeking exclusivity and privacy.  As well as wildlife drives guests can go on walking safaris, sleep out under the stars in a tree house or take a boat trip on Lake Tagalala, and swim in the nearby hot springs.

Murchison Falls, Uganda

View Rothschild’s giraffe, at Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area.  The park is famous as one of the best places to see the extraordinary shoebill as well as a diverse selection of mammals and birds.

2. Where can I see reticulated giraffe?

Reticulated giraffe on a dry riverbed in Samburu National Reserve, Sasaab , Kenya.

Northern Kenya is home of the reticulated giraffe, the most distinctive and handsome of the species, with polygonal patches divided by a neat grid of bright white lines. You can see them in Meru and Samburu Buffalo Springs in Kenya.

Meru National Park, Kenya

With only a couple of safari camps, Meru is little-visited and you’re unlikely to encounter many other vehicles here.  It is one of the most rewarding of all Kenya’s National Parks and certainly a great part of any safari.  All the large mammals are found in Meru and, with a bit of luck, you can spot the ‘Big Five’ of lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant, but that’s not really what you come here to see. More rewarding is to search out the ‘northern five’ of gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich.

Panoramic views of Meru at Elsa’s Kopje , Kenya, Elewana Collection

Stay at Elsa’s Kopje which takes its name from the orphaned lioness Elsa in the film Born Free.  One of the most elegant lodges in Kenya, this lovely property has nine suites, and a honeymoon suite, all offering grand views of the park. Wildlife drives, guided walks, rafting on Tana River, and fishing are all possible here.  If you’re after total privacy then nearby Elsa’s Private House would be a great choice.

Samburu-Buffalo Springs, Kenya

For many travellers Samburu is the highlight of a Kenya safari.  It’s a wild and beautiful place, and wildlife is easy to spot in the parched landscape. There are large herds of elephant and plenty of buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe and zebra, and also dry-country rarities such as gerenuk, which reach tender shoots by standing on two legs. There’s rarely much grass cover so lion, leopard and cheetah are relatively easy to spot, and the banks of the river Ewaso Ngiro, with its large shady trees, provide plenty of excellent vantage points as the wildlife gathers at the water for an evening drink.

Sassab samburu views

Safari tent at Sassab, Samburu, Kenya

Stay at Moroccan style Sasaab , set on a ridge over the Ewaso Ngiro River and with views of Mount Kenya, where every now and again the pool is used as a water hole by wildlife. Activities here include wildlife drives and walks, day trips to the Samburu reserve for its large herds of elephants and endangered Grevy’s zebra, mountain biking, camel riding, spa and cultural village visits. 3. Where can I see Masai giraffe?

The Masai is the most widespread species of giraffe found in Kenya and Tanzania and is famous for its irregular coat pattern of blotches on a yellow fawn background.

Chyulu Hills, Kenya

Beautiful Chyulu Hills offer stunning views of Mt Kilimanjaro, Ol Donyo Lodge , Kenya

If it is views of Kilimanjaro you want then you have to stay in the Chyulu Hills. A wide variety of wildlife can be found in this area but due to low rainfall it is a little sparser than in other regions.  It may take a little longer to find them than in the Masai Mara, but you might see gerenuk, hyena, bat eared foxes, lion, huge old tusker elephant, jackal, wild dog and large numbers of zebra, wildebeest, Masai giraffe and other antelope in wonderful privacy and absolutely stunning scenery.

Ol Donyo Starbed , Chyulu Hills, Kenya

Stay at Ol Donyo Lodge where each of the ten guest suites has its own rooftop sundowner or ‘star bed’ to enjoy the dramatic views over the plains and Mount Kilimanjaro.  There are two family cottages which have space for four and their own pool. Enjoy beautiful walks as well as day and night wildlife drives, fantastic horse riding, and and mountain biking. Another great option for the more adventurous is to camp out on the plains under the stars.

Naboisho Conservancy, Kenya

The Mara Nabiosho Conservancy – a private 50,000 acre wildlife conservation area adjacent to the Masai Mara Reserve – hosts an impressive amount of wildlife, including what is considered to be the greatest density of giraffe anywhere in Africa.  Among other wildlife thriving here are healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, zebra, hyena, and lion.  The number of guests within the conservancy is strictly limited so you will never find a queue of vehicles huddled around a sighting.  Not restricted by rules with in the Masai Mara Reserve itself, visitors here can enjoy off-road day and night wildlife drives, walking safaris and fly camping.

safari with giraffe

Young giraffe close to Nabiosho Camp, Nabiosho Conservancy, Kenya

Naboisho Camp is a great place to stay, and since the conservancy is a partnership between local people and the safari camp operators your visit directly benefits the community.

Serengeti, Tanzania

Known by the Masai as the ‘endless plains’ the Serengeti is filled with grazing species, including giraffe, topi, hartebeest,  impala and Grant’s gazelle, alongside huge herds of buffalo and plenty of elephant. All these herbivores provide a rich and varied diet for predators and in the Serengeti you get them all. There are lion aplenty, leopard and cheetah as well as smaller species such as serval cat. Unusually, all three species of African jackal are found here, along with spotted hyena. There are aardvark and also aardwolf, a rare and delightful species which dines on the endless termite mounds dotted across the Serengeti.

There are lion aplenty in the Grumeti reserve, Tanzania

Stay at Singita Explore Camp , a private mobile camp located in the Singita Grumeti Reserve.  Designed to offer guests a true wilderness experience in complete luxury, there are no set camp sites; rather location is selected for the very best wildlife viewing and scenery for the time of year.

Luxury safari tent at Singita Explore, Serengeti, Tanzania

The camp has just six large tents, each luxuriously appointed with uninterrupted views across the grassy plains. All have en-suite bathrooms with bucket showers and all the little touches synonymous with the Singita brand. The comfortable main mess area and open fire provide the focal point of camp and the perfect place to relax, enjoy a G&T and chat about the day’s adventures.  Back to Top

4. Where can I take young children to see giraffe up close for a few hours?

The african fund for endangered wildlife kenya (giraffe centre), nairobi, kenya.

Family fun hand feeding a Rothschild’s Giraffe, Giraffe Centre, Nairobi

Commonly known as the Giraffe Centre this charity was founded to provide free environmental education to the Kenyan youth, and aid the conservation of endangered species.  In doing so it gives visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with endangered Rothschild giraffes at its sanctuary in Nairobi.

Giraffes amble right over to you to snack on peanut pellets from your hand. If getting licked by a foot-long tongue and hit with musky giraffe breath isn’t your idea of fun, there’s also a café, a gift shop and a tortoise pen.  Back to Top

5. Where can I see giraffe up close?

Giraffe manor, nairobi, kenya.

With ten rooms and two family suites, this luxury house-turned hotel in the Karen suburb of Nairobi is a great place for a night before or after safari proper.   Resident Rothschild giraffes join guests for breakfast or can be fed from your bedroom window. Cheeky giraffes have also been known to try and squeeze into the foyer.

Guests can feed and photograph the giraffes and the warthogs at the Manor, and also wander through the adjoining primeval forest to view the bushbuck, dik dik, and more than 180 species of birds. Back to Top

6. Where can I see giraffes with the Big 5?

Kruger, south africa.

The wildlife in the Kruger is almost overwhelming, especially in the well-watered south around the Sabi River.   The best sightings are probably around the Sabi Sands region as this is where you will also find good rhino populations.  It’s a fabulous area to quickly spot the ‘Big Five’ of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

Luxurious accommodation at Chitwa Chitwa, Sabi Sands, South Africa

Chitwa Chitwa ’s stunning location in the Sabi Sands offers a great chance to see leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, hyena – and if you are lucky, the elusive wild dog.  Eight luxury suites overlook the nearby lake which is a popular water hole for a wealth of wildlife.  Chitwa Chitwa offers guests the chance view the abundant wildlife on morning and evening drives, or bush walks. 7. Where can I horse ride with giraffe?

Okavango delta, botswana.

Riding with giraffe, Okavango Delta , Botswana, African Horseback Safaris

For experienced equestrians, a riding safari with African Horseback Safaris in the Okavango Delta affords a unique way to glimpse this wildlife hotspot.  Cantering through the delta floodwaters alongside giraffes is a real once-in-a-lifetime experience.   Accommodation with African Horseback Safaris is in a classic safari style twin bedded Meru tents.  Each has an adjoining bathroom, as well as a spacious verandah with armchairs overlooking the flood plain.  At the heart of the camp there is a large furnished dining tent and tucked away in the trees is a small plunge pool on its own deck. Though this is for confident riders, we can also offer options for novice riders wishing to ride out with giraffes. Back to Top

8. Where can I see a giraffe on a walking safari?

South luangwa, zambia.

Walking safari with giraffes, South Luangwa, Bushcamp Company

You’re never that far from the wildlife in the South Luangwa – it’s one of Africa’s finest wildlife areas with more than 60 animal species and at least 400 different types of bird.  When you see a lion, others won’t be far behind as here they tend to roam in prides of up to 30. It’s also home to the Thornicoft giraffe, a sub-species found only in the South Luangwa.

Stay at Chinzombo Camp , one of the finest in Zambia, where the six private villas with lovely views over the Luangwa River provide a wonderful base for exploring the park on day and night drives. Walking safaris are available too, or you could just watch the wildlife from the comfort of the open plan lounge.

Laikipia, Kenya

Giraffes in the mist, Laikipia, Kenya, Karisia Walking Safaris

Camel supported walks can be arranged in many parts of Kenya such as the Laikipia region, or in lesser travelled areas such as the Mathews Range to the north of Mount Kenya. Giraffes are seen in good numbers in these areas and when walkers are alongside the camels, the giraffes are happy to allow them to get really close.

Camel safari, Laikipia, Kenya, Karisia Walking Safaris

The mobile camp used by Karisia is very comfortable with walk-in traditional style safari tents. Each tent is furnished with a large mattress on the floor and a table, chair and basin outside. Behind each tent is a loo and a bucket shower, which is filled with hot water upon request. Meals are freshly prepared each day with hand chosen local produce and meats, and all of the cooking is done on a camp fire. Walking through the Kenyan bush with one of Karisia’s expert guides allows guests to experience the smaller things often missed from a vehicle – the tracks, the plants, the sounds, the smells.

9. Where can I see desert giraffes?

Skeleton coast national park, namibia.

Namibia may not have quite the populations of wildlife as its near neighbours, but its desert adapted species are quite astonishing.   Elephant, rhino, giraffe, oryx and springbok are among those that have developed to cope with the harsh conditions here.  Footage taken near Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp featured in the BBC David Attenborough “Giraffes: Africa’s Gentle Giants.”

Hoanib camp sits unobtrusively in its surroundings, overlooking a small waterhole which is occasionally visited by elephant, oryx and other animals.  There are seven twin tents and one family unit, each of which is comfortably appointed and has en-suite facilities.  The tents are raised on short stilts with a private, shaded outdoor lounge which is a perfect spot for relaxing in between activities. The camp has a lounge, bar area, dining room, library, fire pit, plunge pool and deck. Guests can experience walking and vehicle safaris. Hoanib also offers a flying visit to the Skeleton Coast if you stay three nights or longer.

Our 2nd time visiting Giraffe Ranch, got to say, this place is like Heaven on Earth for us animal lovers! They take exquisite care of these cherished animals. They are so beautiful and look amazing! They are also quite happy judging by how well they are reproducing! The new drive thru tour was fabulous and I got to see the place from a different perspective as the segway tour from before. Oh, and don't forget to add the lemur and otter feedings! OMG, they are sooooooo cute! I am in love!

The Safari Tour was something fun to do during the pandemic. We got to have the experience of going to the zoo without the crowds. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and it was fun for the whole family!!!!

a drawing of a person

If you want to get a more personal experience with animals, this is definitely the place to go! We signed up for the Safari Tour to feed the giraffes and lemurs and it was amazing! You literally walk into a cage with the lemurs and get to feed them right out of your hand. The giraffes come right up to the truck and take the cabbage right out of your hands as well. The truck gets so close to these animals and you feel like you are right next to them. It is such a wild experience and I can’t wait to visit again!

Informative, educational and fun. The interaction with gentle creatures like the Lemurs and Giraffes made our day. A clean, well maintained facility where it soon becomes obvious that love for the animals is primary!

I went with a group from a local bank. What an incredible day! You can get face to face with sweet giraffes, camels, etc. Feeding the animals was just awesome. The husband and wife who own the ranch are personable and very knowledgeable. In addition to playing with the animals, I learned a lot. I recommend this excursion for all ages. I just can't say enough about this place. The animals are clearly very happy. It was a delight to get to know them up close. It was well worth the drive from Clearwater.

An incredible close up experience with guides who know and are interested in passing on that information. This is so worth the money and your time. A great experience.

a screen shot of an animal

We enjoyed the tour! The owners are so knowledgeable about the animals and places around the world. We first sat down for a little education about horns and teeth and then we went in to feed the lemurs. They were so cute and fun! We then went on the llama tour. If you have never walked a llama, I highly recommend the experience. We saw tons of animals that you would typically see in the wild on a safari. We came back and hopped in the truck for a drive to feed the giraffes. They have two babies. They are beautiful animals. It was a fun adventure.

We did the safari jeep tour and had a great time. Lots of interesting animals to see and feed. The owners were knowledgeable and gave a great tour. Would recommend to anyone.

My mom surprised us with this trip for Christmas. It was incredible to be that close and personal with the giraffes - and to hand feed them cabbage and sweet potatoes. The owners are so knowledgeable and present everything with a refreshing level of humor.

Giraffe

Where to see Giraffe in South Africa

Giraffes tower above the bush in many African parks and conservation areas. These extraordinary herbivores boast many unique qualities, most famously that of being the world’s tallest land mammal.

About image

Quick facts about Giraffe

Some taxonomists recognise nine species of giraffe while others believe they are subspecies, and others again contend that these varieties – which differ in details of their blotchy patterning – are simply different geographical races of a single species. All giraffes share the same key features, namely, their prodigious height, with long legs and the world’s longest neck; a tasselled tail; and two bony, horn-like ossicones on top of the head. Giraffes’ markings provide effective camouflage in savanna woodland, where they can browse higher than other herbivores. Their extreme anatomy necessitates some extreme adaptations, including the largest heart of any land mammal, required to pump the blood to those distant extremities. Giraffes move in loose, single-sex herds, forming larger aggregations during the dry season.

Where to see giraffes in Africa

Giraffes occur in most major reserves across east and southern Africa, and their stature makes them easy to spot. The largest gatherings take place around waterholes during the dry season.

Top tips for viewing giraffe

You are highly unlikely to miss giraffes in any reserves where they occur. A quick scan often reveals their lofty profiles on the horizon or their pale ears conspicuous against the distant greenery. Up close, these vigilant but inquisitive animals usually tolerate your approach – even, up to a point, on foot. Larger gatherings form during the dry season, where at waterholes you can watch the drawn-out caution with which individuals prepare to drink. ‘Necking’ bouts, when males contest dominance with ritualised head swings, are equally enthralling. Among the various subspecies, look out for the reticulated giraffe north of the equator in Kenya and the Thornicroft’s giraffe of Zambia’s Luangwa Valley.

Kenya Birthday Trip: Giraffe Manor and Masai Mara Safari

The ultimate birthday trip and bucket list safari! Stay at the exclusive Giraffe Manor, witness the Great Migration, see rare white and black rhinos, and discover some of Kenya’s hidden gems. Throughout your journey, enjoy luxury safari lodges that embody classic African safari.

We designed this Kenya Birthday Trip: Giraffe Manor and Masai Mara Safari for a couple from Houston. They had previously done a safari in the Okavango Delta, and now wanted to explore a completely different side of Africa. Seeing the Great Migration in the Masai Mara was one of their bucket list items. When we told them that Giraffe Manor, which they had seen all over Instagram, was also in Kenya, they knew they had to visit!

Giraffe Manor, just outside of Nairobi, was their first stop. They loved feeding the giraffes and seeing them poke their long necks into the dining room for breakfast! From there, they flew to ol Donyo Lodge. This unique lodge is set amongst the Chyulu Hills, in between Kenya’s more popular destinations, and therefore a little-explored hidden gem. Their game viewing was spectacular, and they had fantastic cultural interactions with the local Masai guides.

Next on their Kenya Birthday Trip: Giraffe Manor and Masai Mara Safari, they flew north to the exclusive Solio Game Conservancy. Not only was the lodge beautiful and welcoming, but the location is one of the few places in Africa where you can see rare black and white rhinos. Here, they decided to do something a little different and enjoy a safari on horseback—one of the many highlights of their spectacular journey.

And of course, they had to visit the Masai Mara to witness the Great Migration. Each year, thousands upon thousands of wildebeest migrate through the area, creating a moving feast that attracts predators of all sorts. They stayed at the exclusive Sala’s Camp, where they could return between game drives and enjoy serene views over the green plains. They loved capping off each evening watching the gorgeous sunset with sundowner cocktails.

After their whirlwind adventure, it was time to say goodbye to Kenya. They flew back to Nairobi and spent the day at the beautiful Ole Sereni hotel, then enjoyed a transfer to the airport to begin the journey home.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Kenya! On arrival at the airport, meet your driver for a transfer to Giraffe Manor. This gorgeous manor boasts classic European elegance, with ivy-covered walls, verdant gardens, and sun-drenched terraces. However, the most fascinating thing about Giraffe Manor is its herd of resident Rothschild giraffe who may visit in the morning and evening, sometimes poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary. Spend the night at this wonderfully unique hotel, where you’ll have an opportunity to feed and kiss the friendly giraffes! Giraffe Manor

Day 2 Today, your safari adventure begins! Fly to the Amboseli region of southeastern Kenya. You’ll have your first opportunity to see the Big 5 in the wild on a short game drive to ol Donyo Lodge, located in the Chyulu Hills.

This luxurious lodge sits in thick woodland on a gently sloping hillside with views out over the plains to a distant Mt Kilimanjaro. Designed to merge your outdoor and indoor living, a series of unique suites and villas (no two are the same) appears to emerge from the arid landscape on either side of a palatial lounge and dining area. Arrive in time for a scrumptious lunch followed by an evening game drive, horseback ride, or mountain biking. ol Donyo Lodge

Day 3 – 4 Spend the next 2 days on safari in the region that Ernest Hemingway described as the “green hills of Africa.” Rise early to see wildlife like lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, and much more on morning game drives, when wildlife is at its most active. As the animals retreat in the heat of the afternoon, return to the lodge and enjoy some free time to relax and perhaps cool off with a dip in your private plunge pool. Indulge in a spa treatment or learn about Maasai culture from one of your local guides. Enjoy delicious gourmet meals and premium drinks at the lodge, all included in your room rate. For a special experience one evening, you can choose to sleep on your roof terrace under a brilliant canopy of stars. ol Donyo Lodge

Day 5 – 6 Your journey continues as you fly to rhino country! These incredibly endangered species (both white and black rhino) can be seen at the exclusive Solio Game Conservancy, where you will stay for the next 2 nights. Make your way to Solio Lodge—a beautiful haven nestled in the valley between the dramatic slopes of Mt Kenya and the rolling peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, offering stunning views of Mt Kenya. Enjoy signature experiences such as horseback riding, walking, game drives, and remote fishing trips. Solio Lodge

Day 7 You can’t leave Kenya without visiting the Masai Mara! Fly to the Mara today and enjoy a game drive to the intimate Sala’s Camp. Just 7 luxury tents, each with a private pool, open out to jaw-dropping vistas of Kenya’s vast plains. During your stay, you’ll witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles—the Great Migration—in this world-famous safari destination (July and August are the best months to see river crossings). Sala’s Camp

Day 8 – 9 Spend 2 days exploring this majestic park with its large diversity of beautiful scenery, including meandering rivers, towering escarpments, and rolling grasslands that provide the perfect habitat for the abundance of game, including the Big 5: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and black rhino. Game viewing is spectacular year-round. In addition to the Great Migration, you may see a pride of lions stalking their prey, observe a herd of elephants and their fascinating social structure, or see pods of hippos wallowing in the rivers. In the evenings, cap off your game drives with a cocktail in a scenic location, soaking up the breathtaking Mara sunsets. Sala’s Camp

Day 10 Embark on your final game drive this morning as you head to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi. Enjoy the use of a day room at the luxurious Ole Sereni hotel, where you can watch giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffalos lounging near the waterhole. Then, you will be transferred to the international airport to begin your journey home.

Bwindi Lodge

MASAI MARA The Masai Mara delivers astounding wildlife-viewing all year round. However, if your main drawcard is the Great Migration, July to October sees the annual migration of 1,5 million-plus wildebeest from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara, which includes dramatic crossings of the Mara and Talek rivers. As this time of year is relatively dry, there’s less vegetation, making game-viewing easier.

GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA Gorilla trekking and chimp tracking take place all year round, although the dry seasons (December to end February and June to September) are more comfortable. In the rainy seasons (March to May and mid-September to the end of November), unpaved roads tend to become challenging to navigate, so unless you have loads of extra time, consider flying between destinations. The plus side of the rainy season, is gorillas sometimes move to lower altitudes and become easier to track.

Extend your safari with a stay at the tropical beaches in Mombasa, Diane, Watamu, Lamu or Zanzibar, or plan a few days at Lemala Wildwaters Lodge in Uganda on a small island surrounded by the rapids of the Nile River to rest and relax after the excitement of primate encounters.

BREAKFAST WITH OUR GIRAFFES

Waking up to breakfast with a giraffe must be one of the most incredible and unique experiences anyone can have. This activity is reserved exclusively for overnight guests of Giraffe Manor and is one not to be missed. Loping across the manor lawns and peering in through the large windows with their elegant necks, encountering our endangered Rothschild’s giraffes at such close quarters gives a real appreciation of just how beautiful and soulful these creatures are. Watch out for their inquisitive tongues, which can grow up to twenty inches long, as they investigate what’s on offer; luckily, it’s nutritious dried grass pellets that they’re after, not your pancakes! PLEASE NOTE: The giraffe at Giraffe Manor are wild and therefore we cannot guarantee interaction with them at any given time.

6:00 am – 9:00 am

safari with giraffe

Depending on where you are staying, you will have breakfast either in the Historic Manor or in the Garden Manor breakfast room, but don’t worry, the giraffes know exactly where to find you.

When feeding the giraffe it is better to give them one pellet at a time. This helps with their digestion and ensures that the experience lasts longer.

What our guests say about Kim

7 day Vic Falls/ Kruger adventure!!!
I can’t say enough about Kim and how much she did for me and my daughter to plan her 7 day Safari to Victoria Falls and Kruger Park. For myself to be in the USA and my daughter doing a medical internship in Cape Town, South Africa and the time difference, Kim was amazing in every way. The time difference in itself was a challenge but Kim was so helpful and was very quick to respond to me and my daughter at crazy times to make her trip perfect! Kims communication and most importantly making sure my daughter was Safe traveling solo was superb! Everything was planned and she wanted for nothing. Very good experience with getting quotes
I didn’t end up booking with safari.com but I did have a great experience with their consultant, Leigh-Ann Croeser. I originally wanted to book a safari at a specific lodge but it was not available for the dates we wanted. She offered suggestions and helped us secure holds on other dates. She worked hard and sent several follow up emails as she was able to hold some dates for available rooms at the original lodge! We did end up booking with another safari tour company as I sent out a few quotes at the same time and that worked out better for us but next time I would definitely consider booking with her again!

This Unforgettable Drive-Thru Safari In Ohio Will Transport You Straight To Africa

By: Author Jackson Taylor

Posted on August 29, 2024

Driving through the heart of Ohio , you might not expect to encounter a slice of Africa, but that’s precisely what awaits at The Wilds in Cumberland.

This sprawling conservation center, hidden in the rolling hills, promises an adventure unlike any other.

As you embark on a journey through this unexpected savannah, you’ll be greeted by exotic animals, breathtaking landscapes, and a sense of wonder that’s hard to match.

Wondering what it feels like to embark on a safari without leaving the Midwest?

the wilds 1

Located on reclaimed mining land, The Wilds is a testament to nature’s resilience and human ingenuity.

This remarkable place spans over 10,000 acres, providing a sanctuary for both animals and visitors.

The moment you enter, the vast expanse of greenery and the distant silhouettes of giraffes and rhinos will make you forget you’re in Ohio.

the wilds 2

The Wilds offers a variety of experiences, but the drive-thru safari is the crown jewel.

You’ll find yourself face-to-face with creatures you’d typically see on a National Geographic special.

The safari tour, conducted in an open-air vehicle, takes you through various habitats, each meticulously designed to mimic the natural environments of the animals.

As you bounce along the dirt paths, each turn reveals a new scene straight out of the wilderness.

Zebras, with their black and white stripes, look like they’ve wandered off the pages of a children’s book, casually munching on grass as if posing for your camera.

And then there are the rhinos, looking like ancient armored tanks, sprawling lazily under the sun.

They’ve got this nonchalant attitude, like they’re saying, “Yeah, we know we’re impressive.”

the wilds 3

The guides are the unsung heroes of this adventure.

They’re like walking encyclopedias, sharing tidbits that make you go, “Really? I had no idea!”

You learn about the animals’ habits, their likes and dislikes, and heartwarming stories of conservation efforts that make you feel all fuzzy inside.

Suddenly, you’re not just a tourist—you’re part of something bigger, something important.

While the animals are undoubtedly the main attraction, the scenery itself deserves admiration.

Rolling hills, serene lakes, and lush meadows create a picturesque backdrop.

The landscape changes with the seasons, offering something unique every time you visit.

Spring brings blooming wildflowers, while autumn paints the hills in hues of red and gold.

the wilds 4

Beyond just the drive-thru safari, The Wilds offers a delightful smorgasbord of activities to jazz up your visit.

The group sunset safari is like having a front-row seat to nature’s very own light show.

You can watch the sunset while being surrounded by majestic animals.

The animals seem to know they’re part of something special, and they strut their stuff accordingly.

For those who enjoy taking it slow and steady, the horseback safari is the way to go.

Trotting along on a trusty steed, you get to soak in the landscape at a pace that allows you to appreciate every nook and cranny of this vast conservation area.

the wilds 5

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, the zipline safari got you covered.

Think of it as nature’s roller coaster, but without the long lines and overpriced cotton candy.

Zipping through the air, you get a bird’s-eye view of the sprawling terrain beneath you.

It’s exhilarating and serene all at once.

the wilds 6

Accommodation options at The Wilds ensure that your adventure doesn’t end when the sun goes down.

The Nomad Ridge offers luxury yurts with stunning views of the landscape.

Falling asleep to the distant sounds of wildlife and waking up to a serene sunrise is an experience in itself.

For a more rustic stay, the cabins at Straker Lake provide a cozy retreat.

The Wilds offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, making it an ideal getaway for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

the wilds 7

Dining at The Wilds is another delight.

The Overlook Café, aptly named for its panoramic views, serves a variety of delicious meals.

Enjoy a hearty lunch while watching the animals roam in the distance.

The café sources local ingredients, ensuring a fresh and flavorful dining experience.

For those who prefer picnicking, several spots within the park offer scenic views and a tranquil setting to enjoy your meal.

the wilds 8

The Wilds also plays a significant role in conservation and research.

The center collaborates with various organizations to protect endangered species and their habitats.

By visiting, you’re contributing to these vital efforts.

The knowledgeable staff is always eager to share their work and the impact it has on global conservation.

The sense of purpose and dedication is palpable, adding another layer of meaning to your visit.

Kids and adults alike will find plenty to engage with at The Wilds.

Learn about the breeding programs and the efforts to reintroduce species into the wild.

The hands-on activities and informative displays make it a fun and enlightening experience for all ages.

the wilds 9

A Complete Guide to an African Safari

Image via

Many adventurers and environmental lovers desire to go on an African safari. It's an amazing journey as it offers the opportunity to see magnificent animals in their natural habitat, beautiful scenery, and diverse cultural experiences.

An African safari is an intensive experience that can forge a deep connection between you and nature. Africa has some of the most magnificent wildlife mammals that are really rare to see. Planning the right Africa Safari requires proper research to find the right guides. The continent is rich with many species and a wide variety of scenery and natural habitats, from the wide savannas of the Serengeti to the verdant deltas of the Okavango.

Selecting a Safari Location

There are multiple safari locations in Africa; they're all different and have their own unique traits. You can choose African safari according to your preferences and the creatures, views, and landscapes you want to spot. Among the most popular, favored ones are these:

  • Tanzania's Serengeti National Park:

One of the most amazing animal spectacles in the world, the Great Migration, takes place in the Serengeti every year. Exotic wildlife can be easily seen. Over two million zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests travel across the plains yearly for new grazing areas.

The Serengeti is home to the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, and leopard), making it an excellent place to see these magnificent creatures. Open savannas, riverine forests, and woodlands are among the park's diverse landscapes, home to many animals and complement the vibe itself.

  • Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve:

As a part of the Serengeti ecosystem, the Maasai Mara also is a part of the Great Migration. It is well-known for its spectacular Mara River crossings.

Big cats (lions, leopards, and cheetahs) can be seen quite often in the reserve, offering fantastic chances for up-close encounters and photographs. If you want to witness the migratory range, then visiting this from July to October is the best time. For predator activity, December to February is most suitable. You can see a lot of different beautiful places just by walking safaris or hot air balloon drives and excursions to Maasai settlements.

  • South Africa's Kruger National Park

With well-developed infrastructure, including asphalt roads, Kruger is one of Africa's most accessible parks, making it a good choice if you want to drive by yourself through it. Numerous bird species, wild canines, and the Big Five are among the many wildlife species that can be seen in the park. Through this experience , you can see rare species and learn more about them from experts, like their habits, food choice, food chain explanation, etc.

There are a lot of endangered species that are on the verge of extinction, and you must embrace their existence and beauty by visiting places rich in wildlife.

Kruger offers a range of lodging choices, including affordable campsites, self-catering rest camps, and opulent lodges. This way it will become easier for you to rest and look around Africa’s wildlife. The dry season runs from May to September, and it is considered the best chance to see wildlife. There are several ways to experience it, like night drives, birding, strolling safaris, and game drives. They will help you to catch up to everything that is possible to see during that particular season.

  • Botswana's Okavango Delta

The enormous inland delta known as the Okavango Delta provides a rich and varied habitat for various forms of life. Seasonal flooding changes the terrain and provides experiences on a water-based safari unlike any other. There are different African safaris , and water-based safaris are one of them. With the help of safari experts and safety measures, you can see the beautiful sites in Okavango.

Viewing wildlife from a new angle is possible when exploring the delta's rivers by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), speedboat, or on foot. With more than 400 bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and African fish eagles, the delta is a birdwatcher's dream. It is a distinctive inland delta that provides excellent birdwatching opportunities and water-based safari experiences.

  • Botswana's Chobe National Park

Chobe is well-known for having a sizable population of elephants, especially around the Chobe River, where herds gather in great quantities during the dry season.

Boat safaris on the Chobe River give exceptional chances to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species up close. You can closely see the beauty of the bird species and other endangered species as well. Bird watching is definitely one of the activities that you must try while on Africa safaris. Also, you must know that Chobe is a convenient addition to a trip to Victoria Falls because of its proximity to the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. This way you can have a satisfactory and adventurous trip experience by visiting many places at once.

Safari Types

There are many types of African safaris, and each one of them offers a unique experience. You should know about the safaris better to experience Africa’s beauty in the best way possible.

Game Drives:

In these drives, skilled tour leaders with an in-depth understanding of the region's flora, fauna, and environment will guide you through. It takes place in open-top 4x4 vehicles that provide excellent visibility and access to diverse terrains.

The guides give another insight and improve the educational component of the safari by tracking animals and deciphering their actions.

It is considered the most suitable safari for seeing large mammals, birds, and reptiles, including the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and rhino).

Walking Safaris:

It is also done by well-trained professionals and armed guides for your protection. The extensive guides include information on tracking methods, wildlife habits, and ecological relationships. This way you learn about biodiversity and how it coexists with nature. During these safaris, importance is given to the more minute details seen in nature, like spoor (animal traces) and flora. Through walking safaris, you can learn in a better way by being up close to nature. Walking safaris are good for learning more about plants and birds (flora and fauna) as you can be close to them and see them first hand.

Boat Safaris:

The water life of Africa is also very mesmerizing, and you should experience it during your visit. The boat safari is the perfect choice for a water wildlife experience and places that have big waters around. It is carried out on lakes, rivers, deltas, including the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River in Botswana. Some of the rarest species of aquatic life can be seen in the rivers and lakes. Perfect for spotting crocodiles and hippos and taking some photos.

Other than the water wildlife, it's common to see elephants and other animals on the shore visiting the lake to drink and take baths. The boat safaris usually range from compact motorboats to huge pontoon boats depending on the amount of people on them.

Balloon Safaris:

It gives you a bird's-eye perspective of the land, enabling you to recognize its size and variety. Perfect for tracking huge herds and migratory patterns. They are usually planned for early in the morning; this offers breathtaking sunrise views and ideal lighting for photos.

The overall view of the surrounding area and its population is unmatched and through balloon safaris, you can see it. You can spot predators hunting or herds of animals traveling across the plains.

Safari Accommodations:

While planning your trip and safaris, don’t forget to check the accommodation. It is as important as the experts during your safari drives. The range of lodging alternatives is extensive, ranging from affordable campsites to opulent resorts. You can check the nearby safe accommodation options during the safaris. Let’s check out some of the best options:

It provides comfort and conveniences including eating areas, private rooms, and bathrooms with en suites. You can have gourmet dishes which will be made by experienced chefs. They often have seamless integration with the natural environment in mind, lending an air of tranquility and peace.

Tented Camps:

If you want to be well connected with nature, then you can go for permanent or semi-permanent tents furnished with basic conveniences; these locations offer a comfortable and adventurous experience. Tented campgrounds offer a special fusion of luxury and adventure, giving visitors the excitement of camping in the outdoors without compromising on necessities.

Mobile Camps:

They are usually located in isolated areas, providing a more natural and immersive experience. This allows you to have excellent animal viewing possibilities and lets visitors explore different areas of the safari region. As they are in a mobile area, they are more remote and undiscovered, offering a fully immersive experience.

Low-cost campsites:

Usually found inside or close to national parks, these sites offer basic amenities for guests on a tight budget. Budget campgrounds are more accessible to a wider variety of visitors since they don’t ask you to spend a lot on your accommodation. This way it will be easier to go on African safari with ease.

Bottom Line

If you plan to visit Africa and try an African safari, you must know some essential things like safari destinations, safari types and accommodation options. A safari in Africa is an adventure of a lifetime that offers unmatched opportunities to interact with wildlife and the natural world. You may guarantee a memorable and fulfilling vacation by meticulously organizing your trip, selecting the ideal location and time, packing sensibly, and placing a high priority on health and safety.

Aww, look at the baby giraffe now at Tampa’s Busch Gardens

  • Sharon Kennedy Wynne Times staff

TAMPA — A bouncy baby giraffe has made its public debut at Busch Gardens this week, and she’s a 7-foot-tall toddler named Athena.

Born two months ago, her mother Angel delivered a 156-pound baby that was the 13th giraffe in the herd at the Tampa theme park.

The park kept her behind the scenes the past two months to help her bond with her mother and her keepers, who train the animals to be acceptable to things like taking medication (putting a pill in a banana is one of their favorite tricks).

“Because our area is so large, about 30 acres, we needed to make sure the calf is good staying with mom and not getting into trouble and to help us build a relationship with the calf,” said Kelly Prayner, a zoological curator at Busch Gardens.

If you want to see the baby giraffe, you could book a Serengeti Safari tour for $39.99, which is held several times a day to take visitors on an open vehicle into the veldt. But the giraffes also show up often for people who are perched on the porch at the Giraffe Bar, which opened in March 2021 at the Serengeti Overlook restaurant. It has an outdoor patio overlooking the wide animal habitat. Meanwhile, the animals are having their own happy hour at the strategically placed watering hole within view of the patio.

The baby Athena has about doubled her birth weight, Prayner said, and stands about 7 feet tall, next to her mom, Angel, who is 15 feet tall, and her dad Titan, who is 18 feet tall.

With Athena, Busch Gardens now has 13 reticulated giraffes, a native to the Horn of Africa. Every day, the herd goes through at least a bail of alfalfa and 100 pounds of grain, Prayner said. They also like romaine lettuce as a treat, which visitors are invited to feed them by hand on tours.

Tennessee zoo names the world’s first spotless giraffe

The zoo that welcomed a rare spotless giraffe has now been named after weeks of collecting suggestions and votes.

On 31 July, at Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, a giraffe without spots was born. The zoo said, according to experts, they believe she is the only solid-coloured reticulated giraffe on the planet.

“Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-coloured reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet,” Bright’s Zoo stated in a release.

Reticulated giraffes are a species of giraffes with brown and orange spots. They are native to Africa and in 2018 were listed as endangered, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

David Bright, the zoo’s director, has said in an email to CBS News that the last record of a spotless giraffe dates back to 1972 in Tokyo. It was born at the Ueno Zoo and was named Toshiko.

The goal in giving the giraffe media attention is to bring awareness to giraffe conservation and how the species is on the verge of endangerment. “The international coverage of our patternless baby giraffe has created a much-needed spotlight on giraffe conservation," said Tony Bright, founder of Brights Zoo, in the press release. "Wild populations are silently slipping into extinction, with 40 per cent of the wild giraffe population lost in just the last three decades."

Currently the baby giraffe stands at six feet tall and “thriving” under its mother’s care, according to zoo officials.

The zoo held a naming contest for the public to participate in. On 22 August, Brights Zoo announced they were down to four choices left. Kipekee, which means unique; Firyali, which means unusual or extraordinary; Shakiri, which means “she is most beautiful”, and Jamella, which means “one of great beauty”.

Votes were collected until until Labor Day, on 4 September. Name suggestions can be left on the zoo’s Facebook page .

On Tuesday (5 September) Bright announced the winning name was Kipekee. Approximately 40,000 people from across the world had voted to name the 5-week-old animal, Today reported, with Kipekee getting 36 percent of the vote. “From a lot of guests we talked to, that was the easiest name for a child to say,” Bright joked.

Kipekee received just over 16,000 votes to edge Shakiri, which received more than 10,000.

Voting took place on social media. “We ended up using a program to take all the comments and put them into Excel. Then, we were able to sort that Excel spreadsheet out and hand-count all the votes,” Bright explained on Today .

The birth of the spotless giraffe comes after the loss of two rare all-white giraffes in 2020 at the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy in Ijara, Garissa County. The all-white giraffes had leucism, which causes the loss of pigmentation, creating white skin. They were travelling in a group of three and were all a family. The two killed were a calf and a female, leaving the male left.

After two of them were killed by poachers, a conservation group fitted the third giraffe with a GPS monitor to trace its movements in case another poacher in the arid savannah near the Somalia border were to come after it. The GPS tracking device, attached to one of the giraffe’s horns, will ping every hour to alert wildlife rangers to its location.

"We are thankful for the tremendous help from KWS, Save Giraffes Now and the Northern Rangelands Trust in furthering community efforts to safeguard wildlife species,” said Ahmed Noor, the conservancy’s manager in a press release . “The giraffe’s grazing range has been blessed with good rains in the recent past and the abundant vegetation bodes well for the future of the white male.”

Ishaqbini was first established as a community conservancy by the communities of Hara, Kotile and Korisa locations, with the aim of conserving the ecosystem within Ijara, Garissa County, while sustaining their livelihoods. It is also home to a variety of other species – warthog, lesser kudu, gerenuk, ostrich, a unique herd of largely maneless plains zebra, and the endangered reticulated giraffe – which are facing decline across Africa, according to the release.
