19. Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum

These are just a few of the things that you’ll read about at the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum , one of the most unique destinations on the east coast.

Housed in a historic 1800s building that still retains its white shutters and red roof, the museum is dedicated to all of the heroes that manned the “life-saving station” on the beach.

They were mostly Coast Guard officers, and they operated for more than 100 years to save seafarers from shipwrecks, rogue waves, tropical storms, and other hazards.

Customization is the name of the game at the Fractured Prune.

You start with a hot, fresh-out-of-the-oven doughnut, and you add whatever glazes or toppings that you’d like.

Traditional flavors include things like chocolate and sea salt while crazier options include crumbled bacon.

If you aren’t feeling creative, don’t worry.

You can also order classic combos like the “Strawberry Shortcake” (strawberry glaze, graham crackers, and powdered sugar) and the “Banana Nut Bread” (banana glaze, cinnamon sugar, and peanuts).

Another great thing about the Fractured Prune is that it’s easy on the wallet, so it’s one of the cheap things to do around town.

Moderate climates with warm summers and mild winters make Ocean City in Maryland a paradise for sports planners. Ocean City, easily accessible via American Airlines with Salisbury-Ocean City Airport 30 minutes away, is home to your typical Mid-Atlantic boardwalks while also featuring unique attractions like Assateague Island—also known as the home of wild ponies.

“Ocean City is 10 Miles of Memories for many generations of families who have come here year after year,” says Norma Dobrowolski, destination sales, marketing and CVB manager. “Here at Ocean City, there is always something different to do!”

Ocean City features the Roland E. Powell Convention Center for all your sporting events. The center is grand in size at 214,000 square feet and can accommodate any event from a youth tournament to a show.

When it comes to transportation, the Roland E. Powell Convention Center offers free event parking in addition to boasting free bus rides for event attendees with proper event identification.

On the water, people can enjoy everything from relaxing by the beautiful beaches to paddle boarding and kayaking on the soft water. Ocean City also offers jet ski rentals, parasailing options and charter boat fishing trips in the White Marlin Capital of the World if you are up for more intense water sports.

If you prefer land over sea, there are 17 beautiful golf courses nearby as well as a world famous three-mile boardwalk.

Dobrowolski says, “the boardwalk is your typical Atlantic boardwalk with endless caramel popcorn, cotton candy and more enjoyable treats.”

Further west, West Ocean City is home to great shopping featuring outlet stores as well as unique boutique shops in the middle of town.

If you want to explore nature, Assateague Island—the home of wild ponies—is sure to be a hit with your entire crew! The horses, who travel around the sand dunes on the beaches and the marshlands by the water in herds are protected in the wild by the local park service. If you go, Dobrowolski suggests, “to drive slowly as they tend to gravitate towards the road and are natural treasures.”

If you're looking for a livelier atmosphere, recent travelers recommend sticking to the southern end of Ocean City, where the neighboring boardwalk makes for great people-watching and seafront dining. For a quieter, family-friendly stretch of sand, head north past the boardwalk where you'll encounter a more relaxed environment and where there's a bit more room to spread out on the beach.

This kitschy 3-mile long pedestrian route is flanked by soft sand and the Atlantic on one side and a mix of hotels , eateries, souvenir shops, bars and rides on the other. In the morning, you can rent a bike and go for a ride on the boardwalk (until noon) or if you'd rather walk, it makes for a nice flat walking path. The boardwalk features several benches where you can enjoy a quick snack or just take a break and people-watch. Many of the area's top attractions are on or near the boardwalk, including Ripley's Believe it or Not! , the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum and Trimper's Rides and Amusements . Whether you're looking to try the best ice cream in Ocean City, shop for souvenirs, ride a roller coaster, grab a bite to eat or bar hop, the boarwalk is a must-viist on your trip.

This 58-acre park is Ocean City's largest park and it features several sports fields, walking paths, playgrounds, piers, picnic areas, green space and more. Northside Park is popular with families who need the kids to burn off a little energy on a playground or running around, and it's a great spot to pack a picnic lunch and relax.

Eating steamed crabs at the beach is a favorite pastime of many Marylanders. The spicy and salty seasoning combined with the sweet and succulent crab meat just tastes like summer – and it's a must-try when visiting Ocean City. There are many different establishments throughout Ocean City and several ways you can get your steamed crab fix.

If you want to eat at a sit-down restaurant, On the Bay Seafood , Crab Alley , BLU Crabhouse & Raw Bar and Hooper's Crab House are excellent choices. Many of these spots provide the option of indoor or outdoor seating; and several of these eateries offer takeout steamed crabs too. Going to a restaurant for steamed crabs is a good option if you have never eaten or "picked" Maryland crabs before, since your server can give you a rundown of the best way to get to the meat. Previous diners say these restaurants offer a good introduction to steamed crabs. Many also appreciate the availability of other seafood dishes and sides on the menu for anyone who isn't interested in eating crabs.

Trimper Rides and Amusement Park Trimper Rides and Amusement Park

Since the late 1800s, Trimper Rides and Amusement Park has dominated Ocean City's entertainment scene. With dozens of rides – big and small, indoor and outdoor – the entertainment complex offers something for everyone. Let your kids fly high on the Airplanes ride, or hop aboard the miniature merry-go-round. Your older kids might enjoy the thrills of the Tilt-a-Whirl or the Tidal Wave looping roller coaster. The haunted house is another Trimper fan favorite.

Many recent visitors said the park makes them feel nostalgic (in a good way) and said the park is especially fun for younger children. Some note though that it can be crowded.

Mini-golfing is practically a rite of passage for any family in Ocean City. Coastal Highway is peppered with about 15 fun and different mini-golf courses, each featuring different themes and obstacles on the course. Popular options include Old Pro Golf 's 23rd Street dragon course (outdoor), 68th Street underwater (indoor) and dinosaur (outdoor) courses, and 136th Street safari (indoor) and pirate (outdoor) courses; Nick's Mini-Golf 's 57th Street Maui course (outdoor) and 45th Street beach ball course (outdoor); and Embers Island 's 23rd Street volcano and pirate courses (outdoor). All you need to bring is a good attitude – the mini-golf spots provide putters, golf balls, scoring sheets and pencils.

Dumser's Dairyland : With seven locations everywhere from the boardwalk to 123rd Street, Dumser's is an Ocean City classic. This ice cream shop serves up delicious sundaes, milkshakes, soft serve, ice cream floats and more. Dumser's has been an Ocean City staple since it first opened in 1939 and the homemade ice cream flavors include traditional chocolate, vanilla and strawberry in addition to more snazzy scoops of mint Oreo, peanut butter chocolate chip and black raspberry. If you like soft serve ice cream, consider a twist cone with a chocolate-dipped top.

Seacrets is an iconic spot in Ocean City – and it's one of the highest-grossing bars and nightclubs in the United States. The waterfront bar and restaurant first opened in 1988 as a Tiki bar; today it is a sprawling, 6-acre operation with 20-some bars, multiple stages, a restaurant, a night club, a distillery and a gift shop all on-site. Seacrets is decked out with palm trees and tropical decor; its slogan encourages visitors to "find us and get lost." The venue is located on the bay, with barstool seating and tables available in the water. The majority of the space is covered by sand (something to keep in mind for shoe choice), with stool seating at several bars, and booths and tables available for those coming for a meal. Popular cocktails here include frozen piña coladas, orange crushes and margaritas; beer, wine, shots, mixed drinks and nonalcoholic drinks are available as well.

One of the best ways to experience Ocean City is out on the water. There are numerous ways to enjoy water sports fun either in the bay or on the ocean, including Jet Skiing, paddleboarding, sailing, parasailing, kayaking, windsurfing, pontoon boating and more. There are several water sports rental companies throughout Ocean City. Paradise Watersports , 48th Street WaterSports and Odyssea Watersports are three popular companies that earn rave reviews from recent water sports enthusiasts. Many say the staff and equipment from these companies are all top-notch, with those who rented Jet Skis and pontoon boats highly recommending rentals from these spots.

Each company charges a different fee for rentals, depending on the equipment and length of your rental. However, you can typically expect to pay about $100 to $150 per person for a one-hour Jet Ski rental; $15 to $70 for a kayak rental and around $200 to $600 total for a pontoon boat rental (prices vary by how long you'll have the boat out).

Assateague Island National Seashore Assateague Island National Seashore

If you tire of tourist-filled Ocean City, you may want to consider a day trip to nearby Assateague Island National Seashore. This 37-mile-long island – which begins just south of the resort area and stretches on to Virginia – is famous for its herds of wild horses, which are said to have taken over the island after surviving a Spanish shipwreck several centuries ago. The more likely answer is that they were brought to the island in the late 17th century by land owners who were attempting to evade fencing laws and taxation of livestock. When observing the horses, keep in mind that they are wild, and that petting or trying to feed them is not safe. Aside from the majestic horses, beautiful views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Sinepuxent Bay make Assateague a popular hiking spot. Other to-dos include biking, fishing, shelling and kayaking.

Many recent visitors said the park was a highlight of their trip and not to be missed, praising the beauty of the area, as well as the helpful rangers.

Candy Kitchen Candy Kitchen

Candy Kitchen is the perfect spot to stock up on sweets for your time at the beach. Candy Kitchen was founded in 1937 and first sold only saltwater taffy and fudge. The family business grew and expanded to what it is today – colorful candy stores that are a treat for the eyes, decorated in the bright colors of the rainbow. Candy Kitchen sells classic saltwater taffy in a multitude of flavors, decadent fudge, all sorts of gummy candies and many other types of novelties, including several varieties of chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered caramels, English toffee and more. The shops also have other souvenirs and toys like stuffed animals, Beanie Babies and Squishmallows.

Candy Kitchen has numerous locations along the boardwalk and on Coastal Highway, so chances are wherever you're staying you won't be far from one of the shops. Each store operates its own hours but most are generally open from about 9 or 10 a.m. to around 9 or 10 p.m. Visit the Candy Kitchen website for more details on treats, locations and hours.

Brewery lovers will appreciate the laid-back vibe and extensive selection of beer at Burley Oak Brewing Company. Burley Oak's beverage options range from pilsners, hard seltzers and wheat ales to IPAs, imperial stouts and sours. The brewery is particularly known for its rotating fruited sour beers; flavors that may be on tap when you visit include mango apricot pineapple, watermelon strawberry coconut and grape blueberry cherry. A bonus: You can order a flight to sample several small pours of the beer on tap if you're not sure what you'd like or if you want to try a variety of options. This brewery offers open seating that is first-come, first-served – options include a bar, high-top tables and a spacious outdoor area with picnic tables and lawn games. Burley Oak often hosts various musical acts as well, some of which require a fee for entry, so check the event calendar in advance.

Recent visitors enjoy the wide selection of beer here and love how many different sours are usually on tap. One downside though, according to previous patrons, is that there's no Wi-Fi available and the cell service can be spotty – something to keep in mind if you decide to visit. Note also that only snacks like chips and pretzels are available to purchase on-site, but you can order delivery, bring takeout food or bring your own picnic to enjoy here.

Jolly Roger Park is spread out across two locations. The amusement park at the pier is home to a collection of traditional theme park rides, including a carousel, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel and a roller coaster, among other thrills. Meanwhile, the 30th Street location sits about 10 minutes north of the boardwalk and is home to a water park, mini-golf courses and SpeedWorld, which offers go-karts and other racing-themed entertainment.

Reviews from recent visitors were mixed on whether or not the ticket price is worth the experience. Most think it's a great place for families with younger kids, especially the water park. If you're hoping to save a bit of coin, heed the advice of reviewers and ask your hotel if it offers discounted admission passes.

If you're interested in learning a little local history, head to the southernmost tip of the boardwalk to the Ocean City Life-Saving Museum. Housed in a former U.S. Lifesaving Service and Coast Guard building, the small, yet interesting museum traces this tourist hot spot back to its days as a small fishing village. Here, you'll see exhibits dedicated to Ocean City's development, as well as local sea life and artifacts recovered from old shipwrecks. The museum also hosts special events and free children's programs (scavenger hunts were a particular highlight for recent visitors), making it a great place to visit as a family.

Recent patrons said the museum was fascinating and informative, and recommended taking an hour or so to explore. Others said it was a cool air-conditioned spot to stop in briefly when they were on the boardwalk. The "Sands From Around the World" exhibit, which features sand from Iceland, Russia, Australia, Hawaii, Iwo Jima and more, was a particular highlight.

If the boardwalk doesn't satisfy your need for retail therapy, the Outlets Ocean City should do the trick. Located on the mainland just west of the Ocean City inlet, this sprawling outdoor shopping center boasts popular stores, such as American Eagle, Aerie, J. Crew Factory, Chico's, Coach, Michael Kors, Old Navy, Skechers and Adidas. There are several places to eat here, making it easy to spend several hours perusing and purchasing.

Recent shoppers said there are plenty of stores to choose from and deals to be found, though some found the options limited compared to other outlet malls.  

Ocean City Golf Ocean City Golf

There are plenty of options for Ocean City visitors who prefer to be on the golf course rather than on the beach. In fact, Ocean City features 17 championship golf courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and P.B. Dye. The 18-hole Eagle's Landing  is among the most renowned courses in the area and offers lovely views of the Sinepuxent Bay and Assateague Island National Seashore . What's more, the course is a certified Audubon Sanctuary. While you're perfecting your swing, keep your eyes peeled for bluebirds, mallards, purple martins and sparrow hawks. Recent visitors raved about the course's beauty and said it exceeded their expectations. Greens fees vary but can range from $50 to $80, depending on day and time.

The Ocean City Golf Club is also very popular. This massive golf club is actually home to two separate golf courses. The older of the two – the par-72 Seaside Course – was founded in 1959 and is known for its more classic layout, featuring wide fairways and challenging greens. Seaside's newer neighbor, the par-72 Newport Bay Course, is described as both challenging and enjoyable, a perfect combination for players of all levels. Reviewers are particularly impressed by the views of the Newport Bay Course.

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Ocean City Ripley's Believe It or Not! Ocean City

At Ripley's Believe It or Not! Ocean City – easily recognized by the massive shark sculpture poking out from the front facade – you'll find oddities from around the world. Authentic shrunken heads, two-headed animals and more than 500 other fascinating and mind-bending exhibits await in the site's themed galleries. You can also visit the museum's Marvelous Mirror Maze.

Recent visitors were torn on whether you really need to see Ripley's to believe it. Some say it's entertaining, but others cite the attraction as a place for tourists and complain that the prices are high. Still, reviewers recommend the attraction if you're traveling with kids and need a break from the heat or if you have a rainy day.

Northside Park, Facilities Provides Major Value For OC; Ocean City Complex Undersized For Sports Tourism

OCEAN CITY — While sports complex hopes in the north end of Worcester County had another setback this week, the decades-old Northside Park in Ocean City continues to provide a model of what could be on a larger scale.

The Worcester County Commissioners voted 4-2 to cancel the $7.1 million contract for a property purchase adjacent to Stephen Decatur High and Middle Schools for a vast proposed indoor and outdoor sports complex.

A revised Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) study commissioned by the Town of Ocean City released last week estimated the total cost of the indoor-outdoor sports complex at $153 million. The study anticipated the proposed facility hosting as many as 64 tournaments a year and generating as many as 100,000 new room nights in the resort and surrounding areas.

The release of the MSA study last week and the subsequent vote this week by the commissioners to cancel the contract for the purchase of the property was cause for a deeper dive into the history of Ocean City’s Northside Park, an idyllic gem along the bayside in the uptown areas that for decades has hosted a myriad of youth sports tournaments, both indoor and outdoor, sports leagues, summer camps and a wide variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. In addition, Northside Park has become a cultural hub for the town over the years, hosting the popular Sundaes in the Park event, the ArtX event, concerts and other activities including, currently, Winterfest of Lights. The short answer is there is no quantifiable study on the direct and indirect economic impact Northside Park has on Ocean City and the surrounding area.

Business and Tourism Development Director Tom Perlozzo, who, as Recreation and Parks Director for the town decades ago, was instrumental in the steady evolution of Northside Park, said this week the original intent was to create open, green recreation areas for local residents and grew to become the hive of activity it is today with numerous tournaments, leagues, camps and other activities. Perlozzo said the town and its recreation and parks department does an excellent job of filling Northside Park and its amenities to capacity, but it is undersized to meet the growing demands of the growth in the youth sports marketing industry.

“I am not sure there is any such study on Northside Park, but the metrics of benefits can be monetized within the town,” he said. “First and foremost, Northside Park is offered as a recreational amenity for residents first with some opportunities for tournament-type play and events. Unfortunately, the facility is too small and filled to capacity for use as intended with a new sports complex.”

As large as Northside Park appears, it would be dwarfed by the proposed sports complex in the north end of the county. For example, Northside Park is a 58-acre complex with three lighted softball-baseball fields, a lighted soccer field and a multi-purpose field. The original community center to the east includes a 14,200-square-foot gymnasium and the annexed gymnasium and multi-use area to the west includes 21,000 square feet.

By comparison, the proposed new sports complex in the county adjacent to the schools would rest on 95 acres with eight outdoor fields and a 125,000-square-foor indoor facility. The acreage of the complex and the combined number of fields would be roughly double that of Northside Park, while the square footage of the proposed indoor facility would be roughly triple the size of the combined indoor facilities at Northside Park. Given its size limitations as an open, green area in a resort destination, Perlozzo said Northside Park achieves its desired goals in terms of recreation opportunities along with economic impact.

“I believe that recreation as offered currently still provides the economic benefits in town as many events and programs indicate the same behaviors as travel teams, etc.” he said. “On any given date in the park, hundreds, if not thousands, of residents participate and provide a steady flow in and out of the park, along with visiting any and all businesses during their trip to the park.”

Perlozzo said short of tapping into a future sports complex out in the county, the town is doing a good job of taking advantage of opportunities it has on the island. The success of Northside Park speaks for itself, and the town is in the process of redeveloping the downtown recreation complex including an expansion of the skate park, for example. He said the town has also been exploring ways to tap into the growing pickleball phenomenon.

“I think pickleball alone will be a real eye-opener,” he said. “Youth sports such as soccer have a large contingency of residents, and those who are considered non-residents to keep costs affordable and the opportunity for field teams, etc. Sometimes, I think it’s been Ocean City’s best-kept secret for years, but the word is out, and the assets of Ocean City sell most opportunities, for example the beach, Boardwalk, hotels and restaurants. I was lucky enough to be part of the development of the park during my tenure as director and saw first-hand the maturity of things as they are.”

Recreation and Parks Director Susan Petito also said there was no formal study available on the direct and indirect economic impact of Northside Park, although there are some metrics available to suggest how many visitors, including participants, their families and spectators come to the various tournaments and events. Petito said there has been some effort to conduct an in-house study, but the process has been challenging.

“I agree that would be a great project and is something we have talked about internally for the past couple of years,” she said. “Trying to tackle that project in-house, however, has been a challenging prospect. We were going to try and begin with quantifying economic impact for the tournaments we hold at Northside Park, but the staff member tasked with that hasn’t been able to sink her teeth into it based upon existing workload.”

Petito said while a larger sports complex continues to be explored off-island, a study of what Northside Park brings to the town and the area could be valuable tool. Naturally, because of the size and capacity differences with the proposed county complex, the comparisons would be somewhat apples and oranges, but there could be value in pinning down just what NSP means in terms of economic impact.

“Though there is no official study of the value of Northside Park at this time, I am excited, and have been, about the possibility of what such a report may show,” she said. “I do think it will take a very long time to do all of the research to collect accurate results, but once that is accomplished, it would be an extremely valuable tool.”

Former Councilman and long-time city manager and city engineer before that Dennis Dare this week recalled the nascent days of the NSP site before it became what it is today in the late 1980s.

“I was the city engineer at the time and then-City Manager Tony Barrett told me to go up to Northside Park and look around because we wanted to build an indoor basketball facility up there,” he said. “I turned down 125 th Street and there wasn’t much there. The Montego Bay Shopping Center was there, but basically, it was just an abandoned construction site.”

Dare explained how a developer was in the process of developing the vast site when he ran afoul of state wetlands regulations. A lot of the bayside areas in Ocean City developed over the years were the result of in-filling wetlands and creating lands on which to build vast residential projects.

However, with an increased awareness of the importance of preserving wetlands and critical habitat at the time, state and federal agencies instituted stronger wetlands protection laws. The property on which Northside Park was ultimately developed was slated for development, but the expiration date for the existing regulations expired mid-project, according to Dare.

“The Army Corps of Engineers came down on them pretty hard at the time,” said Dare. “The city agreed to buy the land and restore the wetlands. That big lagoon and the canals throughout the existing park were restored wetlands. Before that, locals were using the area as a dump. There was broken concrete all over the place, stacks of old air conditioners and appliances. It really was kind a wasteland before the city embarked on building a park there. All of that dumped concrete and that other debris was buried under what are now those lush, green sports fields.”

Dare said the design and construction phases of Northside Park were carried out over time before the facility came to be what it is today. He said the original vision was to provide green recreation areas for the town’s residents in an increasingly urban and suburban area but has steadily grown to become a revenue generator through the many leagues, tournaments, camps, youth programs and other events the site offers.

“We started on the design in those early years, then Tom Perlozzo came along as recreation and parks director and we did it a little bit at a time,” he said. “Barrett was fond of saying recreation is something we do for ourselves. The beaches, Boardwalk, all of these other things, we do for the visitors. This park is something we do for ourselves.”

Over the years, Northside Park has hosted youth sports tournaments, adult and outdoor tournaments, lacrosse tournaments, basketball, volleyball, softball and on and on. However, the size restraints of the swath of open space on the barrier island has essentially reached its capacity in terms of attracting tournaments the size of which are envisioned with the proposed sports complex in the north end of the county.

To be sure, the town in recent years has hosted sports tournaments, wrestling matches, volleyball and basketball tournaments and cheer and dance competitions at the expanded convention center, and there has been an increase in the number of sports tournaments and events on the wide beaches in the downtown area, which clearly put heads in beds and fill area restaurants and other businesses and amenities, but a new larger sports complex out in the county is likely needed to take the area’s youth sports marketing vision to a higher level.

“Northside has been a small sports complex, and we’re using the convention center more and more,” said Dare. “We’ve dabbled in sports tourism, but not to the degree we anticipated.”

Ocean City Council takes another step forward in sports complex proposal

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Another step has been taken towards bringing a sports complex to Ocean City.

“I think that sports bring so many families, so many people, to our community. We’ve proven it with beach soccer and basketball, and volleyball, and all the other events. We’ve shown how popular they are,” said Mayor Rick Meehan.

Committee Created

Monday, Ocean City Council voted unanimously to form a blue ribbon committee of stakeholders. The committee will be tasked with answering the big questions left surrounding the project: Should more possible locations be considered? Will the complex put a focus on indoor or outdoor sports, or both? How is the project going to be paid for?

Back when the town was looking into expanding its convention center, a similar committee was formed. Mayor Meehan believes the sports complex committee will help achieve the same success.

“There were people that were in favor, there were people that were opposed. And, a lot of the opposition was just the unknown,” said Mayor Meehan. “When we got everybody in the same room, and we talked about it, we really vetted the pros and cons. And, we looked at the concept as a whole. We were able to come back with a recommendation to proceed and expand our convention center.”

Finding the Funding

The project could cost $153,525,000, and bring 1,000 new, full-time jobs to the area. The Maryland Stadium Authority has recommended an 80/20 cost share between the state and the town.

“We want to bring people here in the off-season,” said Ocean City Director of Business and Tourism, Tom Perlozzo. “A lot of those places that may close up will stay open. Our attraction might be to create some more full-time positions, be able to provide some economics in town, keep our tax rate down, try to generate some revenue.”

Perlozzo says if the state does end up providing 80% of the funding, it would significantly lower the cost the town was originally expecting. It’s a prospect that Mayor Meehan says he thinks everyone can get on board with.

“To be able to have a first class facility that can provide both indoor and outdoor courts on a year-round basis, I think, would be a tremendous boost to Ocean City,” said Mayor Meehan.

Looking Ahead

Despite the excitement around the project, Ocean City leaders are hoping to see more support from Worcester County Commissioners in the process.

“I think the sports complex has been on a bumpy road. It was a partnership with Worcester County originally, and I believe Worcester County now has indicated they don’t want to be in the sports business,” said Perlozzo. “We’re going to take a good, hard look at the sports tourism.”

“We’re hoping that maybe, as we move forward, and get some of the new information… we’ll gain more consensus, even from some of the other elected officials that currently do not support this concept,” added Mayor Meehan.

Ocean City offshore wind projects cleared by energy bureau decision

Offshore wind expansion in Ocean City seems all but inevitable following the green light for US Wind's plans by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

On Thursday, the bureau handed down a favorable Record of Decision approving the company's data in its Environmental Impact Statement and its Construction and Operations Plan . The decision authorizes the company to continue construction plans of up to 114 turbines totaling a 2,200 MW capacity off the coast of Ocean City, enough to power 770,000 homes with offshore wind energy. US Wind has been awarded offtake agreements with the state of Maryland and this fall is re-engaging the state’s public utility board to restructure those agreements.

The approval includes three planned phases for turbine development. Two of those phases, MarWin and Momentum Wind, have received offshore renewable energy certificates from the state of Maryland.

“Today marks the culmination of years of comprehensive environmental analysis on US Wind’s proposed projects,” said Jeff Grybowski, US Wind CEO. “BOEM’s Record of Decision brings us another step closer to securing final approvals later this year and getting steel in the water. We’re eager to advance Maryland’s offshore wind goals and support good jobs in the region for decades to come.”

Environmental groups laud decision

Environmental groups like Oceanic regarded the decision as one that creates significant progress for the state's energy needs and important steps to combating climate change.

“It has been wonderful to watch so many offshore wind projects along the East Coast receive their Records of Decision. However, this announcement is special for Oceantic Network," said Liz Burdock, president and CEO at Oceantic Network. "It is the 10th project to achieve this status, a milestone for the Biden-Harris Administration, and it’s also Maryland’s first offshore wind project. The Network began with the goal of building an offshore wind project in Maryland and today we are one ‘big approval’ closer."

The organization also noted the approved commercial scale project set to begin construction will include US Wind's steel fabrication in the Bethlehem Steel facility in Dundalk.

American Clean Power, an organization that advocates for the multi-tech clean energy industry and represents over 800 energy storage, wind, utility-scale solar, green hydrogen and transmission companies, called the decision a major national effort toward renewable energy.

“In just four years, the U.S. went from zero permitted offshore wind power projects to 10, representing real progress. Of these, one project is completed and five are under active construction. The offshore wind power industry is poised to help the U.S. meet its surging demand for electricity, especially on the populated East Coast," ACP said in a statement.

Possible legal action?

In August, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan noted he was not surprised members of the municipal government did not have all the details of the proposed offshore wind development by US Wind.

"We've decided if the (federal) Bureau of Ocean Energy Management provides a favorable Record of Decision on US Wind's permit application, the Town of Ocean City will file suit against BOEM," Meehan said.

He cited the planned 114 turbines would be "between 10.7 to 10.9 miles off our coast. At a minimum they will be 938 feet tall, and that's three and half times taller than any building in Ocean City. If built on land, they would be the tallest structures in Maryland."

Meehan, a longtime advocate against offshore wind, noted US Wind is an Italian-owned company using subsidies collected from Maryland ratepayers to help fund the project.
