S-E Asia countries stung by Taylor Swift tour snub are shaking it off with new funds, new rules

JAKARTA – The “Swiftonomics” is clear: Taylor Swift’s sold-out stadium Eras Tour concerts have already injected billions in spillover economic benefits to its tour stops so far – and countries in South-east Asia are eager to start luring such superstar acts to amp up tourism and consumer spending on their home ground.

But experts say big money-making acts like Taylor Swift are more likely to perform in venues where they can get the best deal for their shows.

Connectivity, infrastructure and security are pivotal considerations, aside from subsidies or grants like what Singapore was revealed to have offered the singer.

Singapore is the only stop in South-east Asia for Swift, who will be playing at the National Stadium from March 2 to 9, after stops in Japan – where the pop phenomenon’s four shows reportedly injected more than 34 billion yen (S$304 million) into the country’s economy – and Australia.

The region’s Swifties, as the singer-songwriter’s fans are called, were upset – and started making travel plans – when it was announced in mid-2023 that Tokyo and Singapore were the only Eras Tour stops in Asia. Hotel bookings for March experienced a surge, as The Straits Times reported in July 2023.

Traveloka’s flight bookings to and from Singapore for the periods around concerts by Swift increased sixfold, the travel company’s president Caesar Indra said.

The same happened for British band Coldplay, which played six shows in Singapore in January. The National Stadium, the venue of both artistes’ sold-out shows, can pack in 60,000.

As the tangible effects of Swiftonomics materialised, world leaders have also felt the sting.

Indonesia, for one, has formed a 1 trillion rupiah (S$86 million) tourism fund to entice artistes to play more shows in its venues.

“We need ‘Swiftonomics’ for Indonesian tourism,” Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said in an interview on Feb 20, referring to the snowball effect on sectors such as retail and tourism when artistes perform.

Hong Kong leader John Lee said on Feb 20 that the city must be “relentless” in its efforts to lure mega events to its shores.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Feb 22 said the country will do more to lure “A-listers and world-class acts”, including visa-free travel and changing the rules on drinking alcohol at concerts.

He made headlines with his Feb 16 revelations that he had learnt the Singapore Government offered subsidies of up to US$3 million (S$4 million) per show to make the Republic her exclusive Eras Tour stop in South-east Asia.

Four days later, the Singapore authorities acknowledged that a grant was given – details withheld on the premise of business confidentiality – as the concerts are likely to generate significant benefits for its economy.

Dr Samer Hajjar, a senior marketing lecturer at NUS Business School, said the practice of providing subsidies to attract artistes is not uncommon, and governments and tourism boards often use financial incentives like grants, tax breaks and marketing support to draw significant events.

But the purported amount for Taylor Swift’s concerts is notably high, exceeding typical figures for subsidies, which are generally allocated for operational costs, marketing or infrastructure upgrades, he said.

“Whether other countries should emulate this approach depends on their objectives and budgetary constraints. Subsidies can effectively stimulate tourism, economic activity and boost the national image, but careful consideration of benefits versus costs is essential, ensuring alignment with broader economic and cultural goals.”

Ms Rebecca Neo, a research officer at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, said that while a grant could cushion the cost of holding concerts, other considerations come into play too.

“These include venue capacity, security (of the performers and crew), transportation for the audience, et cetera,” said Ms Neo, who is from the institute’s Indonesia Studies programme and has done research into music events in the region.

“Countries wishing to host such large-scale concerts would need to consider all these factors as well to increase their attractiveness as hosts.”

Her colleague Siwage Dharma Negara, a senior fellow and co-coordinator of the Indonesia Studies programme, said that such shows would also be considered in terms of investment yields for the performer.

“They will see the potential of boosting their future earning potentials, for example, through albums, copyright, and others,” he said.

While sidelined this round by Taylor Swift, Singapore’s neighbours boast vibrant music scenes of their own. Indonesia-based PermataBank chief economist Josua Pardede noted that some of the biggest players in the regional music scene are Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has played shows in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, and will be playing in Indonesia in March.

Indonesia was the only stop in Asia for Grammy-nominated indie folk band Fleet Foxes in 2023. And as part of his Asia tour, Welsh musician Novo Amor announced that he will be playing in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Large-scale annual music festivals also feature international artistes and draw thousands of tourists.

Wonderfruit, a Thai music and arts festival held in Pattaya that features popular DJs, drew more than 20,000 people in December 2023. We The Fest music festival, held in central Jakarta from July 21 to 23, 2023, drew some 75,000 music fans with big-name artistes like American rock band The Strokes and Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar.

Events such as these two festivals, noted Dr Samer, thrive on the region’s vibrant cultural scene and natural landscapes, which offer a unique experience.

Singapore, on the other hand, is known more as a concert hub for artistes who want to hold their own shows instead of being part of a bigger line-up that is characteristic of music festivals, said Ms Neo.

Dr Siwage said that for countries like Indonesia to be an attractive destination for concerts, so that they draw visitors with higher purchasing power, governments could consider working closely with the private sector to plan better international events.

“Some critical issues concerning the ability to hold large international events are linked to security, infrastructure facilities, and even some political and cultural factors,” he said.

He cited an example of how Fifa dropped Indonesia as host of the Under-20 World Cup in March 2023 after the governor of Bali refused to host Israel’s team. Protesters in the Muslim-majority country had earlier marched in the capital Jakarta waving Indonesian and Palestinian flags, demanding that Israel be barred from participating.

A clash of societal values also came to the fore in July 2023, when the frontman of The 1975 went on a drunken rant against Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ laws during the British band’s set at the Good Vibes music festival in Kuala Lumpur, capping it with a same-sex kiss with a bandmate. The debacle led to the abrupt cancellation of the event, and the band then cancelled its performance at the We The Fest in Jakarta.

There is also payment and ticketing infrastructure to think about as well, and even Singapore had issues with this when many fans saw red after technical issues plagued their attempts to purchase tickets with the Ticketmaster platform.

Another barrier for Indonesia is to address the problem of scalpers or scammers who try to make a quick buck by scamming fans or reselling tickets at inflated prices, said Mr Josua.

After Coldplay’s show in Jakarta on Nov 15, the police said victims had been duped into buying almost 2,300 fake tickets worth 5.1 billion rupiah.

“One of the significant tasks for the Indonesian government in developing music festivals and concerts further is related to minimising the scalper, or calo in Indonesian, during the ticketing process,” he said. “Minimising the scalpers could help boost Indonesia’s reputation and trust in the artiste’s management itself.”

Taylor Swift membagikan cuplikan film  The Eras Tour melalui akun YouTube-nya pada 31 Agustus 2023.

Dalam cuplikan tersebut, tampak Taylor tampil di atas panggung di hadapan ribuan penggemar yang bersorak.

“Ini merupakan pengalaman paling luar biasa sepanjang hidup saya,” ungkapnya sembari lagu "Cruel Summer", diputar sebagai latar belakang.

Dilansir dari  Deadline (12/10/2023), film ini membuat penonton dapat menikmati setiap lagu dalam konser Taylor Swift dengan lebih dekat dan visual panggung yang mengesankan secara utuh.

Film ini menampilkan setiap panggung dari berbagai sudut dengan pencahayaan yang bagus. Ini memudahkan penonton menyaksikan setiap penampilan dengan lebih jelas dan detail.

Selain itu, suara penonton di lokasi konser yang terdengar memekakkan telinga juga semakin menghibur penonton filmnya.

Baru-baru ini promotor Sound Rhythm mengunggah sebuah informasi yang masih menjadi teka-teki publik. Mereka mengumumkan persetujuan untuk membawa artis internasional konser di Jakarta pada 2024.

Unggahan itu ada pada Instagram Story Sound Rhythm, dilihat detikcom, Selasa (16/5/2023).

"Confirmed, #Bignameartist for 2024," tulis Sound Rhythm pada unggahannya itu.

Hanya tulisan itu saja yang mereka cantumkan pada unggahan itu. Sementara, latar tulisan berwarna hitam polos saja.

Meski begitu, satu jam sebelumnya, Sound Rhythm sempat mengunggah sebuah informasi mengenai 10 album milik Taylor Swift dari Instagram Billboard.

Hal ini masih menjadi tanda tanya, apakah Taylor Swift akan kembali lagi ke Jakarta dengan membawa The Eras Tour?

Diketahui, Taylor Swift sempat mampir ke Jakarta untuk konser The Red Tour pada 2014. Saat itu, ia berjanji akan kembali lagi ke Jakarta.

Lalu setelah itu Taylor Swift kembali menggelar konser dengan tajuk The 1989 World Tour dan Reputation Stadium Tour. Namun sayangnya, Taylor Swift tak menyambangi Jakarta untuk konser tersebut.

Lalu, apakah kali ini Taylor Swift akan kembali lagi dengan The Eras Tour? Hal ini masih belum diketahui kejelasannya.

Meski begitu, belakangan ini Sound Rhythm memang terlihat lebih aktif mengunggah kembali informasi dan penghargaan terkait Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift announces film of massive 'Eras' tour

Never fear -- the culturally defining juggernaut will hit movie theaters with a concert film released on October 13.

"The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I'm overjoyed to tell you that it'll be coming to the big screen soon," Swift said on social media Thursday. 

"Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged."

The giant AMC movie chain is vowing that each of its theaters across the United States will play the film at least four times a day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Tickets are on sale now.

The company said it had upgraded its website and ticketing services to "handle more than five times the largest influx of ticket-buying traffic the Company has ever experienced before."

"But AMC is also aware that no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans," the statement added, warning that customers may experience delays and outages.

Earlier this year botched sales for Swift's wildly popular tour wreaked havoc, prompting a congressional hearing over Ticketmaster's purported anti-competitive practices.

And while "Eras" tickets reached thousands of dollars, fans will be able to nab movie viewings at $19.89 for adults, $13.13 for children and seniors, plus tax.

As of Thursday morning, the website for AMC showed that opening weekend tickets in the New York area were already close to selling out.

A few hours after Swift's announcement, the release of Universal's sequel to horror classic "The Exorcist" was pushed up a week to avoid clashing with the concert film.

"Look what you made me do. The Exorcist: Believer moves to 10/6/23 #TaylorWins," producer Jason Blum posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The 33-year-old Swift wrapped the North American leg of her global tour with four shows in Mexico, and will pick back up in Argentina in November, with plans to tour into the end of 2024.

With 146 total stadium dates, it is expected she will set the record for the first billion-dollar tour, with trade publication Pollstar estimating she's selling some $14 million in tickets per show.

Swift's team does not report box office numbers.

The current record-holder is Elton John, whose "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour, which began in 2018, ultimately made $939 million.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - Film konser Taylor Swift The Eras Tour akan tayang di bioskop-bioskop Indonesia pada 3 November 2023.

CBI Pictures selaku distributor, telah mengumumkan harga tiket dan jadwal pembeliannya.

Film konser  Taylor Swift The Eras Tour menceritakan perjalanan konser penyanyi Taylor Swift dalam pertunjukan di SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, Amerika Serikat, pada Agustus 2023.

Film konser ini berdurasi dua jam 48 menit dan berisi penampilan Taylor Swift menyanyikan 40 lagu dalam konsernya.

Film ini telah rilis pada 13 Oktober 2023 di 102 negara, termasuk di Amerika Serikat. Sementara 13 negara lainnya baru menayangkan film ini pada 3 November 2023.

Harga Tiket Film Konser Taylor Swift The Eras Tour

Penjualan tiket presale  film ini akan dibuka di Indonesia mulai 27 Oktober 2023. Kabar ini diumumkan oleh CBI Pictures melalui akun Instagram resminya, @cbipictures, Sabtu (21/10/2023).

" Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour . Tayang di bioskop mulai 3 November 2023. Presale tiket mulai 27 Oktober 2023," tulis akun tersebut.

Berdasarkan informasi yang dirilis CBI Pictures, tiket film  Taylor Swift The Eras Tour di Indonesia akan dijual dalam dua kategori berdasarkan lokasi pemutarannya.

Tiket film The Eras Tour dijual seharga Rp200.00 untuk penayangan di bioskop Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Semarang, dan Bali.

Sementara tiket film ini akan dijual dengan harga Rp150.000 di bioskop daerah lainnya se-Indonesia.

Ahead of Taylor Swift’s July 14, 2023, concert in Denver, Aditi Desai, chief marketing officer at the Food Bank of the Rockies, got an unusual call. The billionaire pop star wanted to donate tens of thousands of meals to the nonprofit — a philanthropic effort she had repeated, much like her favorite songs, as she traverses the country on her 52-city Eras Tour.

“I was shocked and then thrilled by the news,” Desai said. “When (Swift’s representatives) shared the news, they were so kind, letting us know that Taylor wanted to express her gratitude for the work we do in our community every day.”

Since last March, Swift has donated the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of meals to help feed the growing number of Americans grappling with rising food and housing costs . She chooses to give without celebrity fanfare, and the gifts have been welcomed. But food bank operators say they have provided only temporary relief, as food insecurity has been spiking and federal government COVID-19 aid has ended.

“We got so much support during COVID,” said Jessica Sund, director of development and communications at Channel One Regional Food Bank of Minnesota, which received funding from Swift. “That really helped us not have a horrible situation. But the numbers we’re seeing are so much higher now because of inflation and cost of living, and all of that support is gone.”

Swift’s support has been meaningful, food bank operators say, especially in drawing attention to their crucial service for low- and mid-income people. But food banks, collectively, require billions of dollars in funding per year, said Kyle Waide, CEO of Atlanta Community Food Bank, who is chair of the National Council for Feeding America and whose Georgia food bank is a Swift grantee.

The annual funding shortfall between what is needed in food assistance and what is provided by the federal government is roughly $33 billion , according to Feeding America, a network of food banks, pantries, and local meal programs.

“At a macro level, food banks are certainly facing lots of pressure right now, mainly because of just the extraordinary level of demand that’s out in the community,” Waide said.

Typically, according to Feeding America, food banks rely on individual and corporate donations, contributions from local farmers and retailers, and federal aid programs to sustain operations .

75,000 Meals

The self-described “tortured poet,” who has an estimated net worth of more than $1 billion , has a history of supporting emergency relief causes. Swift’s charitable fund at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee was set up to respond to flooding that struck the region in 2010. She gave $1 million to the community foundation’s Tennessee Emergency Response Fund last year.

Food banks fortunate enough to receive a slice of her wealth have praised the pop star for highlighting their efforts to reduce hunger amid inflation, rising food and energy costs, and increased demand for their services. At least 49 million Americans rely on food from food banks and other charities. Young people, who make up a large portion of Swift’s audience, are increasingly affected by food insecurity. More than half of those ages 18 to 34 said rising food costs were chief among their biggest financial worries.

Swift’s public relations team declined to comment about her food bank donations. Grantees said they were asked not to disclose the amount of the gifts. However, Desai said the contribution allowed the food bank to purchase enough food for 75,000 meals. Typically, the food bank can provide about three meals for every $1 donated, she said.

Channel One Regional Food Bank of Minnesota was able to purchase 30,000 meals with its donation, according to Jessica Sund, the organization’s director of development and communications. Food banks can purchase anywhere from two to 10 meals per dollar donated, she said.

“It really does range dramatically from food bank to food bank,” Sund said.

At Channel One, it usually costs about $8 million a year to keep shelves stocked with enough food to support roughly 300,000 visits from people in 14 counties.

Keeping It Real(istic)

Swift’s gifts seem to amount to a tiny percentage of the revenue earned from the tour and her personal wealth. Nevertheless, many of her food bank grantees consider the exposure that she gives them priceless.

Her donation provided the kind of media attention that Food Bank of the Rockies could never afford, Desai said. “We saw rapid increases in ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ on the social media post announcing the gift, with exponentially more engagement than we typically receive,” Desai said.

Some food banks said they saw a bump in small donations in response to the press coverage. It was short-lived, and most continue to be challenged by high demand for their services as more Americans struggle to make ends meet.

Channel One is seeing an increase in individuals and families reaching out for the first time as they realize they can no longer afford to buy food on their own, Sund said. Currently, the organization receives 10,000 visits to its on-site food shelf in Rochester, Minnesota, which is roughly a 50 percent increase from last year, she said.

Sund and other food bank leaders point to inflation and the lack of affordable housing as contributing to increased demand. The end of government pandemic relief funding has exacerbated these issues, they said. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the federal government expanded the Child Tax Credit program for low-income families. Lawmakers allowed the policy to expire at the end of 2021. Similarly, temporary benefit increases for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program expired in March 2023.

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley also received a gift from Swift during the U.S. leg of her tour. The organization had heard that Swift was donating to food banks and reached out to her press team about a month ahead of her performances in Santa Clara last July, said Shobana Gubbi, chief philanthropy officer at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

“A day before the concert, they just called us,” she said.

Gubbi declined to provide further details about the donation, saying only that the organization was grateful for the gift and for Swift “shining a light” on food insecurity. However, the situation on the ground has not greatly improved. The Silicon Valley region has been deeply affected by layoffs within the tech sector that have resulted in less giving, even from those who are still employed, Gubbi said. People are fearful about job security and are giving less; and when those donations decline, it also means less money from corporate matches, Gubbi added.

In response, Second Harvest is tightening its budget and keeping staff small, she said. The rations of food have also been downsized; rather than providing gallons of milk, the bank is now handing out half gallons and giving meats, eggs, and dairy on alternating weeks, she said. Some weeks people receive meats, and on others they may only get dairy and eggs, Gubbi explained. The organization is currently serving 500,000 people a month, roughly the same as during the peak of the pandemic.

“At the moment we are having a lot of challenges in terms of getting support from the community,” she said.
