This one is for art lovers, and one that would take you as far back as the nineth century. Igbo-Ukwu museum is notable for three archaeological sites, where excavations have found bronze artifacts from a highly sophisticated bronze metal-working culture dating to between the ninth or tenth century, centuries before other known bronzes of the region.

The first, called Igbo Isaiah (a shrine), was uncovered in 1938 by Isaiah Anozie, a local villager, who found the bronze works while digging beside his home. Formal excavations by the archaeologist Thurstan Shaw in 1959 at the request of the Nigerian government, resulted in the discovery of two other sites, Igbo Richard (burial chamber) and Igbo Jonah (cache), containing the remains of an ancient culture. Later, these were excavated as well.

Artifacts have included jewelry, ceramics, a skeletal remains adorned in what appears to be regalia, and much-assorted bronze, copper, and iron objects. Some of these contain materials that are evidence of a long-distance trading system extending to Egypt.

Radiocarbon dating placed the sites around the tenth century AD or earlier, which would make the Igbo-Ukwu culture the earliest-known example of bronze casting in the region. The craftsmen were working centuries before those who made the more well-known Ife bronzes. It is closely related to Nri-Igbo.

This makes for a very interesting tourist location.

Destination. . . Ogba-Ukwu Caves & Waterfalls

tourist places in anambra state

The Ogba Ukwu Caves and Waterfalls presents one of the greatest natural tourist attractions in Anambra State, southeast Nigeria. However, not so much is known about the site, which has been in existence for many years.

Hidden away from the busy routes that crisscross Anambra, the Ogbaukwu Caves and Waterfalls are located in Owerre Ezeukala community that borders Abia, Enugu and Imo. Approximately 75 kilometres east of Onitsha, the cave is considered the largest cave in West Africa, which will take upwards to two hours to explore.

It forms a deep and complex rock formation with roomy compartments large enough to take in an entire village. At the centre of Ogba Ukwu, is one large area said to have been the living room of the ‘god’ of Owerre-Ezukala. There is one particular compartment, accessed by the aid of stone steps where an old elephant’s foot still stands, long dead and dry.

n another crevice, there is a natural spanner of rock, and in yet another is a gun of stone, as old as the cave. A guided tour in and around it are a wonder, and leaves a visitor dumbfounded to this wonderful work of nature. In 2010, the community formally handed over its beautiful and magnificent Waterfalls and cave to the Federal Government.

Anambra State – "Light Of The Nation"

Photo of Cometonigeria Staff

Located in the south-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Anambra State is an inland state with its capital in Awka. The people of the state are warm, hospitable and highly enterprising and could be found engaged in trading all over the country. The state is comprised of 21 local government areas namely Aguata, Anambra, Anambra East, Awka North, Awka South, Anaocha, Ayamelu, Dukunofia, Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Ojoto, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Ogbaru, Ekwusigo, Njikoka, Idemili North, Idemili South, Orumba North, Orumba South, Anaocha, and Ihiala.

History Anambra State was created in 1976 from the old East Central State with its capital at Enugu. A further reorganization of the Nigerian federation in 1991 saw the state divided into two states, Anambra and Enugu states with its new capital at Awka.

People & Culture The state is predominantly occupied by the Igbo ethnic group who by nature are farmers, fishermen, craftsmen and traders. Among crops grown by farmers in the state are yam, palm produce, rice, cassava, cocoyam, vegetables, and different varieties of fruit trees among others. They are also involved in fishing, particularly those living in the riverine areas of the state, while their craftsmanship are nationally and internationally recognized as evident in the iron smithing works of Awka people, the bronze sculptures of Igbo Ukwu etc.

Anambra state is renowned for its abundant works of art and this explains the avalanche of art centres and artists found in the state. The state is home to magnificent bronze works, iron works, pottery and artists that place the state in the league of the most cultural endowed states in Nigeria.

The state is bordered by Delta State to the west, Imo State to the south, Enugu State to the east and Kogi State to the north. Though its mineral resources remain untapped, Anambra State is rich in natural gas, crude oil, bauxite, ceramics and arable soil.

It records about 3,000mm of rain water per annum, this makes the area suitable for agricultural production. Among food crops grown in the state include; yam, cassava, cocoyam, rice, pepper, palm produce among others.

My Firm Now Worth N20bn, I will Give Dangote a Run for His Money, Says Outgoing Anambra CP

David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka

The outgoing Commissioner of Police (CP) in Anambra State, Aderemi Adeoye, has said he is now going fully into business and he is ready to give Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, a run for his money.

Adeoye stated this yesterday during his ceremonial pull out parade from the Nigeria Police Force at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State capital. According to him, he had been at various police units and formations in Anambra State and performed very well, noting that during those years, he served many police commissioners who recorded outstanding performances. He said that his long service to the state before becoming a commissioner made him a better commissioner, who was prepared for the position. He also stated that he had been to various dangerous places without a scare to the glory of God.

“I have been through militancy in Niger Delta, Boko Haram in North-east, fought IPOB militancy in the South East, and I’m glad that I’m alive today. Despite face-to-face gunfire and bombs we encountered, to the glory of God I did not have any scare on me. “The opportunity of being made Commission of Police in Anambra State was the crowning glory of my career in the police. I came in prepared as the CP of the State,” he said.

Adeoye, while commending the Nigeria Police and Nigerians said he had also prepared himself for retirement days. “I thank NPF for the opportunity to serve and Nigeria for investing in me through training at home and abroad. I have been privileged to be trained in Ghana, England, Israel, California and more. “I have served abroad in the United Nations, and this career gave me opportunities for self-development, and these have prepared me for retirement. It’s been a unique privilege serving Anambra.

“I’m proud of my men at Anambra State Police Command. You are gallant, heroic and never giving up. We didn’t achieve anything through individual efforts but with other sister agencies,” he stated. He said that he founded Alpha Trust Investment Club (ATIC) Limited in 2018 and they started it with a modest sum of N54 million, but the investment was now worth over N20 billion. He said the club currently has investments worth over 20 Billion, and that as he retired, he would go into business full time, ready to give Dangote a run for his money.

“That will be my full-time business from Wednesday, May 1, when I fully disengage. We have been investing and now we want to go into full-time business and we will in the next 10 years give Dangote a run for his money,” Adeoye said. He also described Anambra State as a good place with good people, saying that he cannot say any evil against the state and the people. Earlier, the Anambra State Governor, represented by Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachi Ibezim, praised Adeoye for his efforts in helping Soludo fight insecurity in the state.

He said: “There’s a time to start and a time to begin and a time to end everything. We knew today would come. The CP came to Anambra and has played his role meritoriously. He came when Soludo was tackling insecurity and people were in the bush fighting lawful citizens. “Adeoye came in at the same time with his own style and dedication, sincerity of purpose and doggedness and within a short space, Anambra is now calm. It is not over until it is over and the fight is still sustained.

“If it were in our hands, we would say let this goodman continue because we are happy with his works. A street has been named after him and many awards too. I’m happy to proclaim that you are now a citizen of Anambra. We wish you well in your future endeavours.”
