The ultimate guide to the hop-on hop-off bus in the Philippines
Ever taken a hop-on hop-off (HOHO) bus when traveling around other countries like London, New York, Madrid, or Singapore? These fun, sightseeing buses let passengers easily make their own itineraries and visit top tourist destinations around a certain area, without having to stay with a particular group the whole time.
Riding a HOHO bus can be very useful for tourists who have no idea where to go around a city and want flexible yet convenient access to key landmarks, without having to stick to a fixed itinerary. It’s also particularly useful for those traveling with seniors or kids, who get tired easily when taking normal public transportation like trains or jeeps and get tired when long walks are involved.
Last July 2023, the Department of Tourism (DOT) in partnership with private stakeholders introduced the first-ever hop-on hop-off bus tour in the country with trips currently available around Makati City and Manila City.
Unlike having to navigate public buses or other forms of transport, these buses offer a hassle-free, seamless, and contactless transport and tour booking system for travelers. It’s really about time we had one here.
Here’s all you need to know about how to book trips on the hop-on hop-off bus in the Philippines, available routes, schedules, and other handy transport tips.
How does the hop-on hop-off bus work?
The Philippines hop-on hop-off bus enables tourists to explore the city’s best spots and activities through designated bus stops. The Department of Tourism-National Capital Region team has curated suggested itineraries for each stop, providing visitors with a range of options.
There’s a dedicated website offering essential information and the bus will have a reloadable EMV-capable card. Users will be able to book tours using the mobile app, which is available for download on Google Play and the App Store.
Upon installing the app, you’re given an option to log in as a guest or sign up. The app lets you browse or explore available tours and you can pick between a Guided Tour or DIY Tour for your chosen route.
The app will allow you to make cashless payments, get GPS-networked bus-arrival monitoring, watch video guides, and get more information on hotels, food, and tourism merchants in the areas you’re visiting.
The app also provides links to download and more information on mobility and banking partners, including Beep, Grab, Angkas, and PayMaya, which international travelers going around Metro Manila will definitely find useful.
As of this writing, the app still has to fix some bugs, as errors still occur when trying to view routes or book tours on the actual app (at least in the Android version).

How much does it cost?
Tourists will be able to buy the passes for the bus tours through the HOHO mobile app for around P1,000 to P2,500 depending on the number of days they plan to use it.
The one-day pass is worth P990 , while a two-day pass costs P1,799 , and P2,499 for a three-day pass.
While it seems pretty pricey for ordinary Filipino passengers who need to just get around, the rates are pretty standard considering their target market will be international tourists. For comparison, a 24-hour pass on a Taipei Double Decker Sightseeing Bus costs P960 on travel booking platform Klook, while a 24-hour discovery ticket on Big Bus London starts at €40.50 (approx. P2,500 ) for adults.
What are the routes available?
Currently, there are bus tours available in Makati City and Manila, offering a seamless and contactless transport and tour booking system, with plans in place to expand the project to other key destinations across the country.
Makati City
The bus will bring tourists to some of the best destinations around the vibrant business hub. This includes stops in eight hubs with easy access to galleries, museums, hidden bars and restaurants in Poblacion, parks, and major malls in Makati connected to other major transport lines.
- Glorietta 2
- Washington SyCip Park
- Ayala Triangle
- Rockwell Center
- Century City
- Museo ng Makati
- Circuit Makati
Passengers can take the bus to get around designated stops within the city to and follow suggested itineraries curated by the DOT-NCR team. They can also avail of private and guided tours (such as free walking tours) for a more immersive experience. The hop-on hop-off bus tour in Makati runs from 10am to 7pm daily.
Manila City
Want to take your balikbayan friends or relatives around historic museums in Intramuros and Manila and go food-tripping around the bustling Binondo district without having to navigate through traffic and worrying where to park your car? The hop-on hop-off Bus Tours in the cultural hub of Manila stops at nine destinations all over the capital city.
- Raja Sulayman
- Robinsons Manila
- Rizal Park / Luneta
- Manila City Hall
- National Museum
- Malacañang Heritage Tours
- Jones Bridge Escolta
By taking the bus, you can visit the three major National Museums, check out the Clock Tower Museum at Manila City Hall, chow down on street eats in the oldest Chinatown in the world, and enjoy a cultural experience in Intramuros and Fort Santiago.
The hop-on hop-off Manila buses run daily from 1am to 7pm. However, those who want to stop at the Malacañang Palace can only do so at 3pm, so take that into consideration when planning your route for the day.
Another thing. Make sure to check the bus line’s official FB page for schedule changes, as trips can be canceled due to adverse weather conditions for the safety of passengers. The bus is also used for exclusive tours of VIP guests and delegates from other countries, which can impact the regular daily tours.

Where else will there be HOHO buses around Metro Manila?
Makati and Manila aren’t the only destinations in the metro getting HOHO bus tours. Similar bus tours will be rolled out in other key destinations across the country. Based on the official website and app, HOHO buses are “coming soon” to four other key tourism hubs, namely:
- Pasay and Paranaque
- Quezon City
- Pasig, San Juan, and Mandaluyong
No details on the planned routes in each hub have been made available yet. However, the thumbnail photos of each destination on the website and app gives those familiar with the cities what to expect.
On the app, Pasay/Paranaque is labeled as an ‘Entertainment Hub’ and shows a picture of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Other key spots that will probably be part of the route will be Mall of Asia (MOA) and casinos in Pasay.
Taguig is labeled as the ‘Lifestyle Hub’ with numerous restaurants and shopping areas situated around the Bonifacio Global City (BGC), a major leisure and financial district.
Quezon City, described as the ‘Mind Hub’ is home to top educational institutions like the University of the Philippines. You can also find several outdoor parks and spaces like the Quezon Memorial Circle and Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife (PAWB) in this green city.
The cities of Pasig, San Juan, and Mandaluyong are described as the ‘Heart Hub’ with a picture of the Pinaglabanan Shrine and the Saint John the Baptist Parish in San Juan shown on the app and website. We’re guessing the oldest underground reservoir underneath the San Juan Park along with notable churches, museums, and malls in the area like Megamall will be part of the route.
Excited about this new development and for tourism and sightseeing in the Philippines? Stay tuned for more details as new bus hubs are launched in the near future. We can’t wait!

OUTDOOR LEARNING
We believe in nourishing the power of education beyond walls. For local clients, we offer programs for K-12, college field trips, faculty field trips, and study tours abroad. We have various programs for different interests: history and culture, humanities, and nature and the environment. We also offer educational tours to different destinations in the Philippines for foreign students. Our 15 years of handling local and foreign student group tours made us one of the most trusted educational tour company in the Philippines.
educational FIELD TRIPS
For students, field trips can be the best of both worlds: a welcome and exciting break from day-to-day classroom activities and a memorable, real-world experience that will solidify the curriculum in their minds. Unfortunately, the most desirable trips—those to far-away, enticing destinations— have long been inaccessible due to the ongoing pandemic. Limiting the movement of people outdoors not to mention the AITF policy on social distancing thus, not allowing children ages 18 and below outside their homes for health safety.
But today we have other options. Virtual field trips (VFTs) are just what their name suggests: field trips that are conducted virtually, over the Internet, and/or videoconferencing equipment so that students can learn directly from experts in far-flung places without ever leaving their homes.

Manila Field Trip Itinerary and the Metro’s Top Tourist Spots
Would you know I learned something from Wikipedia today! I learned the tagalog word for “fort” and it’s “moog” as in Moog ng Santiago for Fort Santiago 🙂 Hehehe
Funny I knew “Fuerza” it’s Spanish translation but not the tagalog .Why I did not know of this back in my elementary studies, I have no idea lol. Oh well, thanks to Wiki, now I know.
Why this sudden interest in forts you may be thinking. Well, this blog post is about our Manila Field Trip and of course no decent Manila fieldtrip is complete without visiting these 4 popular sites: The Walled City of Intramuros, Fort Santiago, Luneta and yep I’m including SM MOA heheheh.
If you are looking for a cheap Manila tour, you don’t need to avail of a day tour package because you can do it on your own. Plan your trip itinerary with these suggestions.
Start of Manila Tour? Make it to Kilometer 0!
Manila Top Tourist Spots and Destinations
There are many top tourist destinations in Manila which you visit for their cultural, historical and/or entertainment and recreational value. Historical and Cultural includes those sites mentioned above as well as the old buildings and institutions like the Manila Watchtower, the National Museum, the National Library, Museong Pambata, Binondo and more. The entertainment or recreations must-see places are Manila’s Oceans Park, Star City, Manila Zoo, Divisoria, Greenhills, SM Mall of Asia, Malate or Makati (for night life) and more. Even on a normal day, these places are teeming with local and sometimes foreign tourists.
Tour the walled city of Manila and visit the 7 churches inside Intramuros especially Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church (a UNESCO Heritage Site). If you love taking snapshots of old buildings then Intramuros is a must-see for you. Entrance fee is free. If you want to check out the San Agustin Museum there is a P100 entrance fee.
Pay a visit to Rizal’s last ‘home’ in Fort Santiago. Follow his footsteps as he was led from his prison cell to his execution in Bagumbayan, now Luneta. Once in Luneta you can gaze at the giant statue of Datu Lapu- Lapu and have fun found looking for your province in the Philippine Relief Map.
If all those history lessons muddled your brain, you can go right after to Star City or SM Moa or both to relax or even all the way to Greenhills! (yep this is what we did since at that time there was the COD Christmas show and display in this popular shopping and bargain haven.)
All these can be done on one day Manila trip! =) Actually you can add more sites, we limit ourselves to those sites since we are also planning on hunting some great and cheap buys in Greenhills later that day (which we did by the way =).

- LTFRB to Schools: Use Accredited Bus Companies for Field Trips
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reminded school administrators to use only accredited bus companies and transport services when taking students out on field trips and other off-campus activities .
This is designed to uphold the safety of students, because accredited transport services are required to meet transportation standards before they are allowed to ferry passengers to their destinations.
In addition, LTFRB board member Atty. Aileen Lizada said that the Department of Education should be more specific with the type of vehicle that schools are allowed to use for their students.
" Ang kinakailangang gamitin diyan ay one, tourist bus," Lizada said. "Meron din tayong tinatawag na tourist transport shuttles, these are the tourist vans. Ito, sila they can go anywhere in the Philippines." ("Only one type of bus should be used, a tourist bus ," Lizada said. "There's also what's called as tourist transport shuttles , these are the tourist vans. These can go anywhere in the Philippines.)
Lizada also reminded school administrators to ask the bus companies for their franchising, insurance , and other such documents that relate to their accreditation . A contract should also be created between the school and transport service stating the legal obligations of the latter .
"You are delegating to that bus company that responsibility that you owe to the children, to the children’s parents," Lizada elaborated.
She also reiterated the importance of having the buses inspected by either school officials or a representative from the LTFRB.
“We look at the bus itself. Wala pang butas , the glasses are not broken. We also check the driver’s license ng driver na magmamaneho , professional ba ?" Lizada questioned. She emphasized that commercial buses should not be used by schools , as these are for public transport . ("We look at the bus itself. There are no holes, the glasses are not broken. We also check if the driver's license of the driver, is it a professional driver's license?")
“You do not use regular buses unless meron silang application sa amin for special permit. Kung kukuha kayong regular bus at wala po silang permit , ito po ay colorum,” Lizada said. ("You do not use regular buses unless they have an application for a special permit with us. If you're going to get a regular bus and they don't have a permit, then it is illegal."
When apprehended, colorum buses face penalties of up to three months impounding and a fine that can amount to PHP1 million .

The night before the trip, we went to bed in our PE uniform in fear of being late for the 5am call time. Our chaperones all had digi-cams to record our cheeky smiles. When we were old enough to go on a field trip without a guardian, it was a whole new level of excitement. We made sure we packed our favourite snacks in our backpacks.
