If you’re a sun and beach lover, Summer (June, July, and August) is the best season to visit. The temperatures are higher, and you can enjoy all the water activities you want. But be prepared for crowds and higher prices.

Spring is a lovely time to visit, too, which is from late March to mid-June. You’ll enjoy a quieter, laid-back atmosphere, but some places may be closed as it is a small town, so check in advance.

Autumn is also an excellent time of year to visit. The temperatures are mild, and you’ll have a lot of sunshine hours to enjoy.

This is controversial, but Winter is also a great idea, especially if you want to escape gray days and cold weather. You’ll enjoy full sunshine, and the temperatures are even mild.

Does it get busy in the summer? What can you expect if you stay here? Is Benalmadena nice? Is it suitable for couples or families?

I will answer these and all other questions you might have in this article!

I have been living next to Benalmádena since 2020, so I know the city really well. In this article, you will find detailed insights that will help you understand what to expect when you arrive in Benalmadena and help you navigate the city better.

I have also added a list of the popular attractions and my tips for the best places to stay.

Let’s dive in!

What is Benalmádena Like?

Benalmádena is a very unique destination on Costa del Sol, because it actually consists of three very different areas : Benalmádena Costa, Benalmádena Pueblo and Arroyo de la Miel.

The other thing that makes it unique is that you can walk to Torremolinos, the resort town next to it, in a matter of a few minutes. Here is a short introduction to each of the areas.

YouTube video

What’s Benalmádena Costa Like?

Benalmádena Costa is the liveliest part of town, home to beautiful beaches, beach clubs, and the famous Benalmádena Marina. Life is centered around the beach promenade (Paseo Maritimo), where you will find a wide range of local restaurants, small shops, and bars.

In the summer, the promenade gets very busy with locals and holidaymakers taking walks, and it’s also a popular spot for the street vendors to display their goods (and conveniently block half of the pavement). The coastline area is what you would expect to see on Costa del Sol – bars and restaurants with bleached-out menus on display, holidaymakers in their summer outfits heading out for a drink, and lively groups of youngsters celebrating the summer season.

The coastal area stretches for nearly 8 kilometers, so it’s a good idea to check the map properly when you’re booking your accommodation because your hotel or apartment might be quite far from the center.

Benalmadena Bil Bil Castle

What’s Benalmádena Pueblo Like?

A few kilometers uphill from the coast, Benalmádena Pueblo is the oldest part of the town and is almost in complete contrast with the coastline area.

Much more remote and quiet, this whitewashed traditional Andalusian village feels like a world away from the busy beachfront, offering cobblestone streets, cute local restaurants, and panoramic views of the coastline. It’s a charming escape from the busier areas and is perfect if you want to experience traditional Spanish culture.

Benalmádena also offers the best options for private villa rentals with pools and the best views of the whole city.

What’s Arroyo de la Miel Like?

Inland from the coast, Arroyo de la Miel (literally “Stream of Honey”) is the bustling center of Benalmádena, spreading around the main train station which connects the town with Malaga and Fuengirola.

It’s a more residential and commercial area, known for its local restaurants, shops, and public amenities. This area has a mix of both locals and tourists, giving it a more authentic Spanish feel compared to the purely tourist-driven areas on the coast.

It’s a densely populated area of the town and, admittedly, not the prettiest part of the town.

Where to Stay in Benalmádena?

That depends on what you’re looking for, what’s your priority and your budget!

Here is my short guide for the different areas:

  • Access to Beach: Benalmádena Costa
  • Walking Distance to Everything : Benalmádena Costa, Arroyo de la Miel
  • Best Budget Accommodation : Arroyo de la Miel
  • Family Friendly: Benalmádena Costa
  • For Views: Benalmádena Pueblo
  • For Luxury Stay / Hotels: Benalmádena Costa
  • For Quiet Holiday : Benalmádena Pueblo

How Busy Does Benalmádena Get?

Benalmádena, just like the rest of Costa del Sol, is welcoming more and more tourists each year, so it does get very busy in the main summer holiday season. Here is what you can expect in different times of the year:

Summer (June to August): As with much of the Costa del Sol, summer is the busiest season. The beaches, particularly those around Benalmádena Costa, can get quite crowded, and parking can be very difficult. The streets around Puerto Marina are filled with holidaymakers enjoying watersports, bars, and restaurants. Hotels often reach full capacity and get booked up very early, and prices are at their highest (check my guide on how expensive Benalmadena is here ).

It’s buzzing with activity, which is great if you’re looking for energy and excitement, but less so if you prefer a quieter vibe.

Shoulder Seasons (April to May and September to October): Spring and fall are excellent times to visit Benalmádena. The weather is still warm, the beaches are less crowded, and you’ll have a more relaxed experience. It’s a favorite time for families and older travelers who want to avoid the summer crowds.

Winter (November to March): While the town quiets down significantly in winter, it’s still lively compared to other European destinations. Many attractions stay open year-round, and the weather is mild, making it a good option for off-season visitors. However, some beach bars and tourist shops close during the winter months, especially in Benalmádena Costa.

The General Feel of Benalmádena

Benalmádena’s atmosphere varies depending on which part of the town you’re in.

Benalmádena Costa offers a mix of high-energy beaches, a lively nightlife, and a touristy vibe. You’ll find plenty of beach clubs, restaurants, and bars, making it a hotspot for tourists looking for sun and fun. The general feel here is lively, cosmopolitan, and geared toward visitors of all ages.

Arroyo de la Miel strikes a balance between bustling and residential. It’s where you’ll find most locals going about their daily lives, but it still caters to tourists with shops and tapa bars. The vibe is friendly and authentic, making it a great spot to experience local life while still having access to modern conveniences.

Benalmádena Pueblo has a peaceful, almost idyllic feel. The town retains its old-world charm with narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and flower-filled balconies. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the coastline and explore a more tranquil setting, this is the perfect spot. It’s a romantic, slower-paced area with lots of beautiful places to explore nearby (see my list further down).

Is Benalmádena Nice?

Benalmádena strikes a good balance between being a bustling tourist spot and maintaining a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. It doesn’t have the “trashy” feel that some overly commercialized destinations tend to develop.

Instead, it feels like a well-rounded coastal town that caters to a broad audience, from party-goers to families, without losing its charm.

Is Benalmádena Safe?

Benalmádena is considered very safe for tourists and locals alike. Petty crime like pickpocketing is relatively rare, but as with any tourist destination, it’s always smart to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

What To See In Benalmádena

Benalmádena offers plenty of things to do for every type of traveler, from adventure seekers to history lovers. Here are some of the most popular activities and places to explore:

1. Puerto Marina

One of Benalmádena’s most iconic landmarks, Puerto Marina is more than just a harbor—it’s a hub of entertainment. The area boasts a mix of restaurants, bars, and shops. You can stroll along the marina admiring the yachts or hop on a boat tour to explore the coastline.

The nightlife here is vibrant, with clubs and pubs catering to both young party-goers and those looking for a more relaxed evening drink.

Here are some popular water activities from the marina:

  • Dolphin Watching Boat Trip
  • Catamaran Cruise with Drinks & Swimming
  • Parasailing boat trip

2. Benalmádena Cable Car

Take a ride up Mount Calamorro on the Benalmádena Cable Car. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Costa del Sol and, on clear days, the African coast. There are also walking trails, bird shows, and opportunities to paraglide for the more adventurous.

Cable Car Tickets:

3. sea life benalmádena.

Located near Puerto Marina, Sea Life is an aquarium that’s great for families with young children. It’s a smaller, more intimate experience compared to larger aquariums but offers fascinating exhibits of marine life, from sharks to turtles.

Sea Life Tickets:

4. parque de la paloma.

This beautiful park is an oasis in the center of Benalmádena. With lakes, gardens, and plenty of green space, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon.

Families will love the playgrounds and the animals that roam freely throughout the park, including peacocks, ducks, and rabbits.

5. Benalmádena Pueblo

Don’t miss exploring the old town of Benalmádena Pueblo.

Walk through its narrow, flower-filled streets and visit landmarks like the Iglesia de Santo Domingo and the Colomares Castle , a quirky monument built in honor of Christopher Columbus. The views from here over the Mediterranean are simply breathtaking.

6. Buddhist Stupa and Butterfly Park

For something different, visit the Benalmádena Stupa , the largest Buddhist stupa in Europe.

Nearby is the Mariposario de Benalmádena (Butterfly Park), home to thousands of butterflies from around the world. It’s an unusual yet serene experience.

Mariposario de Benalmadena (Butterly Park)

How To Get to Benalmádena

Benalmádena is conveniently located very close to Malaga Airport, transport from the airport would take you only about 20 minutes. You can either take the local C-1 train in the direction of Fuengirola, just outside of the arrivals terminal, or book your airport transfer in advance.

There is also an uber pick up point at Malaga Airport, so if you have an Uber app you will save quite a bit of money compared to using regular taxis.

Final Thoughts

Benalmádena offers a little bit of everything, from beachside fun to historical exploration and family-friendly activities.

Its blend of liveliness and tranquility makes it a versatile destination, perfect for solo travelers, couples, and families.

The town is safe, clean, and full of charm, without the tacky or over-commercialized feel some coastal towns can develop. Whether you’re visiting for the beaches, the nightlife, or a taste of Andalusian culture, Benalmádena will leave you wanting more.
