Almost all travelers require a visa to enter Egypt, but fortunately, the process is pretty simple, and a little advance planning goes a long way.

This guide will walk you through the entry requirements for visiting the land of pyramids on a tourist visa.

Who needs a visa to visit Egypt?

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Egypt, but citizens of many countries can apply for an e-Visa in advance or obtain a visa on arrival at Egypt’s international airports. Both cost US$25.

Getting an e-Visa is generally a smoother process than getting a visa at the airport. Apply for a tourist visa online in advance on  the Egyptian Government's official e-Visa website . All you have to do is fill out the online application form and pay.

If you decide to get a visa at the airport when you land in Egypt, be prepared to wait in line – bring your own pen to fill out the paperwork in line or on the plane – and pay in cash (US dollars, euros or British pounds only, not Egyptian pounds).

Citizens of Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can enter Egypt visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of Malaysia can enter for up to 14 days.

If you're not eligible to get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa, head to the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country and apply in person. The visa process can take several weeks.

How to get an e-Visa for Egypt

To save time, apply for an e-Visa before your trip to Egypt. Citizens of these countries are eligible for Egypt’s e-Visa and can apply on the Egyptian government's official website . Your passport must be valid for at least six months before the date you intend to arrive.

The process is simple: sign up for an account, fill the form and pay the US$25 using a credit or debit card. You’ll receive email notifications as the application is processed.

If you’re issued a visa, you’ll be emailed a link to your e-Visa to download and print the document. When you land in Egypt, present the e-Visa to the Egyptian border patrol with your passport. Have a copy of your accommodation details or tour booking in case you’re asked to show them at the airport.

Egypt’s e-Visa can be single or multiple entry. The single-entry visa allows visitors one entry into the country for stays of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry visa allows travelers to come into  Egypt an unlimited number of times over a period of 180 days and for up to 30 days at a time. Apply for a multi-entry visa at least seven days before your trip.

Visa on arrival in Egypt

If you don’t have time to apply for an e-Visa, you can still get a visa on arrival at the airport if you’re eligible. Visas are available for purchase (US$25) at a kiosk in the arrivals hall before the immigration counters.

Have the correct amount in cash in a major foreign currency (US dollars, euros or British pounds) to avoid delays.

The visa comes in the form of a stamp that you’ll need to put into your passport to present at the immigration counters and passport control.

If you opt for a visa on arrival, you’ll need a passport that’s valid for at least six months from your arrival date, a travel itinerary and documentation to show you've booked accommodations or tours.

Visa on arrival is available at all of Egypt’s international airports. The downsides are that you can be issued a single entry visa only, and the lines at the airport can be long.

You don't need a visa to stay in Sinai on short trips

If you are visiting the resort towns on the Gulf of Aqaba coast and won’t be going to mainland Egypt, you can stay in Sinai for 14 days without buying an Egyptian visa. The Sinai-only visa allows travellers to visit Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab , Nuweiba , Taba and St Catherine, but you cannot go to Ras Muhammad National Park.

The Sinai-only visa is available at the airport in Sharm El Sheikh and the Egypt–Israel border crossing at Taba. If you arrive at Taba and plan to visit mainland Egypt, you must purchase a visa online in advance or at an Egyptian embassy abroad.

Egypt - level 3: reconsider travel.

Reissued with obsolete COVID-19 page links removed.

Reconsider travel to Egypt due to  terrorism . Exercise increased caution in Egypt due to  the Embassy’s limited ability to assist dual national U.S.-Egyptian citizens who are arrested or detained.

Do not travel to:

  • The Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) due to  terrorism .
  • The Western Desert due to  terrorism .
  • Egyptian border areas due to  military zones .

Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Egypt. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, and have targeted diplomatic facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, western businesses, restaurants, resorts, and local government facilities. Terrorists have conducted attacks in urban areas, including in Cairo, despite the heavy security presence. Terrorists have targeted religious sites, to include mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling to these locations.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Egypt, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). For more information U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions and Notices .

Local law prohibits protesting or demonstrating without a permit. Being near anti-government protests can draw scrutiny from Egyptian police and security forces. U.S. citizens have been detained for participating in protests and for posting content on social media perceived as critical of Egypt or its allies.

The U.S. Embassy may have a limited ability to provide consular services to dual U.S.-Egyptian citizens. Egyptian law considers dual citizens to be Egyptian citizens.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Passport and Visas:

  • U.S. citizens must have a visa to enter Egypt.
  • U.S. citizens can obtain a renewable single-entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Egyptian airports for a 25 USD fee. A multiple entry visa is also obtainable for 60 USD.
  • The Government of Egypt has created a website for the issuance of “ e-visas .” There are other websites purporting to offer electronic visas, some of which reportedly charge double the official price, but this is the only official Government of Egypt portal for this service. U.S. citizens and the citizens of 44 other countries are eligible to apply through this means in advance of their travel.
  • Egyptian immigration officials occasionally have denied entry to travelers without explanation.
  • U.S. citizens who have experienced difficulty with their visa status in Egypt or are concerned about their eligibility for a visa upon arrival should apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate prior to travel, but a visa obtained prior to entry does not guarantee admission to Egypt.
  • Visas for gainful employment or study in Egypt must be obtained prior to travel.

Entry from Israel:

  • U.S. citizens arriving from Israel at the Taba border crossing should obtain a visa ahead of time.
  • If travelers do not obtain a visa prior to arrival, they may either apply for a no-fee, 14-day visa that is only valid for travel within the Sinai Peninsula, or they may obtain a 30-day tourist visa valid for travel throughout Egypt for 25 USD.
  • The 30-day visa requires the submission of a travel agency support letter that may be obtained from travel agents at the border; their fees for providing this service vary.
  • The Government of Egypt opens this border on an infrequent and unpredictable basis.
  • Travel groups and/or humanitarian aid convoys that wish to cross at Rafah would need to contact the  Egyptian Embassy  in Washington for permission prior to travel.
  • The Egyptian government screens travelers before allowing entry/exit through the Rafah border crossing with Gaza.
  • The U.S. government advises its citizens to avoid travel to Gaza; the U.S. Embassy does not issue travel letters or provide any assistance in crossing to and from Gaza.
  • Travelers to Gaza from Egypt should read the  Travel Advisory for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza and are reminded the Sinai Peninsula remains a particularly dangerous area, with frequent Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS) attacks on security forces and civilians.

Diplomatic and Official Passports:

  • Diplomatic and Official passport holders, when entering Egypt for official business, are required to have visas  before arrival in Egypt.
  • Diplomatic or Official passport holders must not use these passports to enter Egypt for unofficial travel, and should use their personal passports, following all appropriate regulations.
  • Travelers attempting to enter Egypt with diplomatic or official passports who do not have visas will be denied entry and required to remain in the airport transit area, at their own expense, until their immediate departure from Egypt can be arranged.
  • The U.S. Embassy in Cairo is unable to intervene in such situations. Military personnel arriving on commercial flights are not exempt from passport and visa requirements.
  • The  Egyptian Embassy  in Washington currently requires at least three weeks, and sometimes much longer, to process official and diplomatic visa requests, an expedite letter from the Department of State notwithstanding.
  • It is incumbent upon all official travelers to submit their visa requests and passports to the Egyptian Embassy well in advance of travel.

Work Permits:

  • U.S. citizens who wish to come to Egypt for work must obtain work permits and work/business visas before arrival.
  • All work permits must be obtained through the employer. These permits may be acquired from the Ministry of Manpower and Migration offices in the district of the employer; accordingly, these permits authorize residency in the country.
  • U.S. citizens who arrive as tourists but want to change their status after arrival in country may acquire a three-month tourist/non-working residency visa to allow sufficient time to change their status from tourist to worker.
  • U.S. citizens in Egypt on tourist visas are not permitted to work.

For additional information on entering Egypt, please contact the nearest  Egyptian Embassy  or Consulate.

Medical Requirements:

  • U.S. citizens arriving from an area that has been infected with yellow fever will need to provide proof of immunizations.
  • Please verify this information with the  Egyptian Embassy  before you travel.

Exit Requirements:

  • U.S. citizen women married to Egyptians do not need their spouse's permission to depart Egypt as long as they have a valid Egyptian visa or valid Egyptian passport.
  • A U.S. citizen departing Egypt with a dual-national child (U.S.-Egyptian) may be required by Egyptian immigration officers at the airport to demonstrate that they have proof of consent of the non-traveling Egyptian parent.
  • If travelers attempt to depart Egypt after the expiration of their visa, they may be required to pay a fine at the airport. Travelers should ensure that they arrive to the airport early with sufficient Egyptian currency to pay any fines.
  • The U.S. Embassy does not issue travel letters to exit Egypt.

Dual Nationals:

  • If a dual national has the annotation “Egyptian origin” on their entry visa, they will require proof of Egyptian citizenship in order to exit Egypt.
  • This is also true for dual nationals who remain in Egypt for more than six months.
  • In some cases, if a dual national loses their U.S. passport, they will be required to present their parents’ Egyptian birth certificates and be documented as Egyptian citizens in order to obtain a temporary/replacement entry stamp to facilitate their travel out of Egypt.
  • Male U.S. citizens who also hold Egyptian nationality, between 18-40 years old, who have stayed in Egypt more than 180 days, are required to finalize their Egyptian military status before departure, or risk being refused departure from Egypt by Egyptian Immigration officials. The U.S. Embassy is unable to intervene in these situations. For more information see: https://tagned.mod.gov.eg/ .

Safety and Security

The Department of State Travel Advisory warns U.S. citizens to avoid travel to the Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) and the Western Desert. Travel to the Libyan and Sudanese borders is also not recommended. U.S. citizens in Egypt should maintain a high level of vigilance throughout the country due to the threat of terrorism.

Between December 2018 and May 2019, terrorist incidents in tourist areas in greater Cairo killed four tourists and wounded at least 18 others. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, and have targeted diplomatic facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, western businesses, resorts, and local government facilities. There is a possibility of terrorist attacks in urban areas, including in Cairo, despite the heavy security presence. In August 2019, a car bomb explosion outside of a hospital in Cairo killed at least 20. Additionally, terrorists have targeted religious sites, to include mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling to these locations.

The Egyptian government has attempted to address security concerns and has visibly augmented its security presence at tourist locations, but challenges persist, and the threat of terrorism remains. Police and military are also engaged in operations to combat terrorism and disrupt terrorist cells in the Sinai Peninsula and the Nile Valley.

  • The Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) due to terrorism.

The Sinai Peninsula remains a particularly dangerous area, with frequent terrorist attacks on security forces and civilians.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens anywhere in the Sinai Peninsula as U.S. government employees are not authorized to travel to these areas (with the exception of the beach resort of Sharm El-Sheikh; travel to Sharm El-Sheikh is only permitted by air).

  • The Western Desert due to terrorism.
  • Egyptian border areas other than official ports of entry.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Egypt’s borders are under military control; movement of non-military persons and vehicles is substantially restricted, and in some cases prohibited, within these areas. U.S. citizens should not travel in these border zones.

It is illegal to photograph police stations, military barracks, and certain other sensitive public buildings.

U.S. citizens are urged to remain alert to local security developments, avoid demonstrations, and be vigilant regarding their personal security at all times throughout the country. U.S. citizens should also carry identification and a cell phone or other means of communication that works in Egypt, and it is advisable to pre-program the U.S. Embassy’s telephone number (+20 2 2797-3300) and email address ( [email protected] ) into the device.

Travelers must obtain permission and a travel route from the Egyptian Military Intelligence and the Tourist Police Headquarters via a local or overseas travel agency to access Egypt's frontiers, including the borders with Libya, Sudan, Israel, and parts of the Sinai Peninsula off paved roads.

High concentrations of World War II-era unexploded landmines are located in the World War II battlefields along the Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria, the Eastern Desert between Cairo and the Suez Canal, and much of the Sinai Peninsula. Travelers are urged to be especially cautious in these areas.

Crime:  Crime levels in Cairo and Alexandria are moderate.

The vast majority of criminal acts against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, such as purse snatching and pickpocketing.

Harassment of women, including foreigners, remains a serious problem. Incidents of harassment range from lewd comments and gestures to indecent exposure and inappropriate physical contact.

Tourists should be alert to being overcharged for various services and for being victimized in scams common to tourist destinations worldwide. Tourists should expect to encounter aggressive vendors at Egypt’s shops in urban areas, as well as at the many temples and archaeological sites. Some will offer “free” gifts to tourists which, once accepted, lead to demands for money. Most sites have specially designated tourist police who can assist in uncomfortable situations.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Egypt. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers

The U.S. Embassy receives frequent reports of online financial scams, often involving a fraudulent romantic partner requesting money for hospital bills or legal expenses to depart Egypt. Be skeptical about sending money to anyone known only through online contact.

Victims of Crime:

U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.

Report crimes to the local police at 122 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +(20) 2-2797-3300. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime. The Embassy cannot intervene in legal disputes.

Failure to report crimes before leaving Egypt will make it impossible to seek prosecution at a later date. U.S. citizen tourists can forward their complaints for investigation to the Tourist Police Headquarters. For crimes involving children, you may call Egypt’s Child Emergency Help line by dialing 16000 . Egypt’s National Council for Women provides some assistance to women who are victims of domestic violence, or other complaints, at phone number 15115 or website: http://www.oo-ncw.org .

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

  • See the  State Department's travel website .
  •  Follow us on  Twitter  and  Facebook .

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and adventure facilities may not frequently occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are not always able to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: Travelers are subject to local laws. The Egyptian legal system is different from the legal system in the United States, with significantly different standards of evidence, due process, and rule of law. Travelers should be conscious of their behavior and how it may be interpreted by Egyptian authorities. If one  violate local laws, even unknowingly, one may be denied entry, expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Egyptian police and security forces do not require probable cause in order to stop, question, and detain individuals. Failure to carry proper identification, such as a passport, may result in detention and questioning.
  • Suspects may be detained without charges or access to immediate legal counsel for months during the investigative stage of a criminal case.
  • U.S. citizens have been detained for several days or more in non-criminal cases, including immigration violations.
  • Local laws prohibit protesting or demonstrating without a permit. Even being in the vicinity of anti-government protests can draw scrutiny from Egyptian police or security forces, including demands to search personal electronic devices. U.S. citizens have been detained for posting content on social media perceived as critical of Egypt or its allies.
  • Punishments often can be harsher in Egypt for comparable crimes than they are in the United States. Penalties for drug offenses can be particularly severe, including life in prison or the death penalty.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Dual U.S.-Egyptian Citizens : Egyptian law considers dual nationals to be Egyptian citizens and thus the Egyptian authorities do not automatically notify the U.S. Embassy when a dual national is detained, or provide information about their alleged crime. Family members, friends, and/or traveling companions may notify the ACS Unit at U.S. Embassy Cairo if the arrested U.S. citizen is unable to do so. U.S. citizenship does not provide protection from detention or arrest by Egyptian authorities and individuals detained may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention.  U.S. citizens arrested for any reason in Egypt may be deported, even if they are not convicted of a crime.  Detained U.S.-Egyptian citizens have been asked by the Government of Egypt to renounce their Egyptian citizenship as a condition of their deportation to the United States.

Consular officers must obtain authorization from Egyptian authorities to visit American detainees.

  • Entering or exiting Egypt with more than $10,000 is prohibited. Attempting to enter or depart Egypt with any instruments of currency in the sum of more than $10,000 could result in the confiscation of the money over $10,000 and other penalties.

Importation of all types of drones, including small civilian drones used for personal or touristic purposes is strictly prohibited. Potential penalties for violating are harsh, and a recently passed law authorizes the death penalty for using a drone in support of terrorist activity.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Cultural Property:  Travelers should note that Egyptian law prohibits the unauthorized removal of antiquities (including historic coins, ceramics, and architectural elements) both from archaeological sites and other sources in Egypt. Egyptian law also forbids the intentional damaging of antiquities, such as inscribing or painting on them or attaching advertisements. The trade, sale, or export in antiquities is also heavily restricted and regulated. Travelers may be prosecuted if found to be looting or damaging archaeological sites, buying antiquities, or smuggling antiquities out of Egypt. Penalties include fines and/or imprisonment.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See the  Department of State’s International Religious Freedom Report .

LGBTI Travelers: LGBTI individuals face significant social stigma and discrimination in Egypt. Egyptian law does not criminalize same-sex sexual activity, but LGBTI persons and advocacy groups have reported harassment, intimidation, arrests, and other forms of abuse, including by police. There are also reports that authorities have used social media, dating websites, and cell phone apps to entrap persons suspected of being gay or transgender in an act of “debauchery,” which is a criminal offense that carries sentences of up to 10 years. Police have confiscated rainbow flags and sometimes detained their owners. See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and sections 1c and 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

ACCESSIBILITY:  While in Egypt, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from in the United States. Businesses and institutions in Egypt generally do not make special accommodations for persons with disabilities, and Egyptian authorities do not enforce laws mandating access to transportation, communication, and public buildings by persons with disabilities. Pedestrian sidewalks and walkways are limited, uneven, high, and sometimes used by cars and motorcycles.

Accommodations on public transportation are not offered for elderly individuals or persons with disabilities. Crosswalks are not in widespread use and motorists have the right of way. Pedestrians should exercise extreme caution.

Students:  See the  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Many women travel safely each year without incident. However, when it comes to health and security, women travelers are more likely to be affected by religious and cultural beliefs of the foreign countries they visit. The truth is that women face greater obstacles, especially when travelling alone.

Women, especially those traveling alone, should exercise particular care in crowds, on public transportation, in rural areas, and in isolated sections of temple and pyramid complexes. Women have been groped in taxis and while in public places.

The Embassy continues to receive reports of U.S. citizen women subject to domestic violence, sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and rape in Egypt.

Some Egyptian NGOs provide assistance to victimized women within the Egyptian community. Women victimized overseas may be entitled to receive compensation for counseling and/or other services such as relocating back to the United States.

For further information see the travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Egypt, dial 123 .

Ambulance services are not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.

Insurance:  Travelers should make sure their health insurance plan covers them when outside of the United States.

  • The U.S Embassy cannot pay medical bills.
  • U.S. Medicare does not pay overseas.
  • Doctors and hospitals often expect cash payment for health services.
  • The U.S. Embassy strongly recommends  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation, since medical transport out of the country can be prohibitively expensive or logistically impossible.
  • See the webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Medical Care:

Emergency and intensive care facilities are limited. Most Nile cruise boats do not have a ship's doctor, but some employ a medical practitioner. Hospital facilities in Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm el Sheikh are adequate, but they are inadequate at most other ports-of-call. The Egyptian ambulance service hotline is 123. Although availability of ambulances is improving, getting them through Cairo traffic can be very challenging.

Beaches on the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts are generally unpolluted. However, persons who swim in the Nile or its canals, walk barefoot in stagnant water, or drink untreated water are at risk of exposure to bacterial and other infections and the parasitic disease schistosomiasis (bilharzia).

It is generally safe to eat freshly prepared cooked food in hotels, on Nile cruise boats, and in mainstream restaurants. When selecting a restaurant, travelers should select a clean and reputable place, eat only freshly prepared, cooked foods, avoid all uncooked food including raw fruits and vegetables. Tap water in some locations is not potable. It is best to drink bottled water or water that has been boiled and filtered. Well-known brands of bottled beverages are generally considered to be safe if the seal is intact.

Although the Embassy cannot provide medical advice or provide medical services to the public,  a list of hospitals and doctors in Egypt  can be found on the Embassy website.

Prescriptions:  Travelers should carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations:  Travelers should be up-to-date on all recommended  vaccinations , per CDC’s information.

Travel and Transportation

Traffic Laws:  Although the enforcement of traffic laws generally is lax, foreigners are subject to extra scrutiny and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could result in arrest or detainment.

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving in Egypt is extremely hazardous. Egypt has one of the highest occurrences of road fatalities per mile driven in the world. Intercity roads are generally in good condition, but unmarked surfaces, pedestrians, stray animals, sandstorms and fog, vehicles without lights, and disabled vehicles without reflectors are among the many hazards present on highways, especially after dark.

Driving Cairo’s busy maze of streets can be an extreme challenge to foreigners, especially those used to a culture of structured rules and regulations. Even residents of Cairo must use extreme care and situational awareness to navigate the capital’s hectic streets. Impatient drivers typically ignore traffic rules, which police seldom enforce. Most traffic lights in Cairo do not function; instead, police officers, using finger and hand movements to direct traffic, normally staff the main intersections.

Vehicle accidents remain a significant safety concern.

Visitors thinking about driving in Egypt should carefully consider other options, such as a taxi or hired driver. If visitors decide to drive, it is essential that they take the utmost precautions and drive defensively. Drivers should be prepared for unlit vehicles at night, few road markings, vehicles traveling at high rates of speed, vehicles traveling the wrong way on one-way streets, divided highways, and connecting ramps, pedestrians dodging in and out of traffic, and domesticated animals on the roadways. Motorists should be especially cautious during the rare winter rains, which can cause extremely slippery road surfaces and localized flooding; Egyptian drivers are not familiar with driving in wet conditions, making such periods particularly hazardous.

Pedestrians should also exercise extreme caution on high-volume/high-velocity streets, like Cairo’s Corniche, which follows the eastern bank of the Nile River, and Alexandria’s Corniche along the Mediterranean.

Public Transportation:  Public buses and microbuses are not safe, and Embassy personnel are prohibited from using them. Embassy personnel are also prohibited from traveling on Cairo’s metro system. Embassy personnel are prohibited from traveling by train, which is a particularly unsafe means of transportation, with regular accidents that sometimes involve mass casualties.

Embassy personnel are generally prohibited from traveling outside the greater Cairo and Alexandria areas by motor vehicle, with the exception of travel to beach resorts on the western side of the Red Sea and near Alexandria. Furthermore, Embassy policy prohibits personal travel via privately-owned vehicle to any part of the Sinai Peninsula or the Western Desert.

Please refer to our  Road Safety page  for more information.

AVIATION SAFETY OVERSIGHT:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Egypt’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Egypt’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Egypt should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts at the  Maritime Security Communications with Industry Web Portal . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website  and as a broadcast warning on the  National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s website .

Step-by-step guide to obtaining a visa for Egypt

This article covers basic questions related to obtaining an Egyptian tourist visa, such as the documents required, the validity period, countries that qualify for e-visa, etc.

Step 1: Check If You Need a Visa for Egypt

Travelers from most countries in the world (including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia) must have the correct documentation before arriving in Egypt. Having all your paperwork done properly in advance saves time and unnecessary expenses.

On entering Egypt, the officer at border control will check your passport as well as other travel documents, such as your visa and additional documents demonstrating your purpose of travel and nationality.

More specifically (updated March 30, 2020), passport holders from the following countries and territories may enjoy a visa-free visit to Egypt for up to 90 days:

  • Macao, China
  • Hong Kong, China
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Lebanon — at Sharm el Sheikh International Airport, Hurghada Airport, or Alexandria Borg El Arab Airport (if arriving by a charter flight)
  • Malaysia (up to 14 days)

Passport holders of the following countries may also enjoy a visa-free visit under certain conditions:

  • Afghanistan (provided the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age)
  • Algeria (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)
  • China (provided that the traveler holds a return/onward ticket, hotel reservation confirmation in a 4- or 5-star hotel, and the equivalent of USD 2,000)
  • Libya (provided that the traveler is a female national or a resident of Butnan District; on Sundays and Mondays).
  • Jordan (provided that the traveler holds a normal 5-year passport, and the passport does not contain a stamp on page 60 from the Jordanian Registration Office)
  • Lebanon (for all of Egypt, provided the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age; a visa is not required for Alexandria and South Sinai, for travelers of all ages)
  • Morocco (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)
  • Sudan (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is a female national)
  • South Sudan (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is a female national)
  • Tunisia (provided that the traveler is ≤14 years of age)
  • Yemen (provided that the traveler is ≥50 or ≤16 years of age, or is traveling for medical reasons)

Passport holders of countries and territories that are not listed are required to obtain an Egypt visa to visit the country.

Step 2: Find Out which Visa You Need

Consulate Visa

Visitors who hold passports from countries not eligible for an e-visa or visa on arrival must apply for a visa in person. A visa approval — which takes several weeks to process — may be sought from competent authorities in Egypt.

Step 3. Prepare the Required Documents

  • Completed and signed visa application form with one photograph stapled to the form and one copy of the completed application form with the photograph
  • Two 2x2″ (51x51 mm) recent high-definition passport photographs taken against a white background (the photograph must be no more than six months old)
  • Actual passport (valid for at least six months, with an empty page for the visa) and two copies of the information page
  • Two photocopies of a Green Card (front and back) or valid US visa (for travelers who are residents of the US)
  • Other supporting documents, such as copies of your round-trip tickets and itinerary. If you are a resident alien in the country from which you are traveling, you may need to provide a copy of your residency card.
  • A valid email address (to register and apply for the e-visa)
  • Passport valid for at least six months from date of arrival in Egypt
  • Valid debit or credit card (for payment)
  • Host information (such as hotel or local contact)
  • Travel itinerary (checked on arrival)
  • Hotel bookings / details about places on the itinerary, if traveling as a tourist (checked on arrival)
  • Applicant must be from one of the eligible countries
  • Passport valid for at least six months, with at least two blank pages
  • Payment in cash (USD) only

Step 4. Pay the Fee and Collect your Egyptian Visa

For the e-visa, the fee is paid when you submit your application online. You can simply print it out and present it at the port of entry.

The cost (charged on your card) is USD 25 per person for a single-entry visa (tourist), and USD 60 per person for a multiple-entry visa (tourist). You will obtain your visa in about 2–8 weeks depending on your location and nationality.

For a visa on arrival, the cost is USD 25 (single entry). You may only pay in cash, as credit and debit cards are not accepted at the airport terminal. After making the payment, you will receive a visa sticker which you will need to present at the immigration desk to gain entry to Egypt.

For the consulate visa, the cost for a tourist visa ranges between USD 15–30 depending on your country of origin. Please be aware that most consulates/embassies accept only cash or cashier's checks. It normally takes about 1–8 weeks for the application to be processed, depending on your location and nationality.

When to Apply for Your Egypt Visa

For the e-visa, travelers must create an e-visa application at least seven days prior to departure, according to the Ministry of Interior of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

For the consulate visa, we suggest you submit your application at least six weeks before your departure for Egypt.

A visa on arrival may be applied for at border control prior to queuing up for immigration. Simply bring your documents, tickets, cash, and cards along with you.

Egypt tourist visa application process

The application process for an Egypt tourist visa is as follows:

Are you eligible for Egypt eVisa?

Before you begin applying for an Egypt tourist visa, determine if you are eligible for Egypt eVisa. The above section explained what countries are eligible for the eVisa. If yes, go through the process as it’s easy and short. If not, continue the process as explained in the below section.

Completing the application form

The first stage is to complete the application form. You can receive it from the Egyptian embassy or consulate website in your home country. Remember that you need to find their website and know the requirements.

Complete the firm with the exact information from your documents. Your name must be as written on your passport. So it is with the other documents. When you complete the form, print, date, and sign it. Ask the embassy whether you should date the form or not.

Gathering the requirements

The Egyptian embassy requires you to submit some supporting documents to prove you are eligible to visit the country. You can see the list of them in the above section, but the embassy or consulate in your home country could require further documents. It’s up to their decision and your case.

Remember that you can start collecting requirements earlier than the date you want to apply for the visa. It could take a bit longer for you to collect everything, so consider some delays.

Schedule a visa interview with the embassy

When you have collected all or part of the requirements, contact the embassy and schedule a visa appointment with them. If you have not gathered part of the supporting documents, see if you can collect all the requirements by the date of the interview.

Determine if the embassy provides a recipe for the scheduled meeting or not. If yes, keep the receipt and provide it for the interview. You need to remember the exact date and time of the interview as you should not be late.

Attend the visa meeting

Go to the visa meeting on the exact date you reserved it. You should not be late and, in fact, a bit early. It could take time to go through the security check and prove your identity. You need to carry all the supporting documents to the meeting. As there is a fee with the visa processing, bring enough money to pay it. Ask the embassy what form they receive the payment; cash or credit card.

When you meet the visa officer, submit the requirements, pay the fee and keep the receipt. They will also ask you questions about the purpose of your visit to the country. Be honest and give true answers regarding your visit.

When everything is completed, you can ask about the processing time and the way to receive your visa.

Wait for visa processing

It takes time, so the embassy works on your visa and decides whether to issue it or not. The processing time is up to a few factors;

  • The embassy workload
  • Your documents are complete or not
  • The time of the year you have applied.

When your visa is ready, the officials inform you to pick it up or send it to your address. If it’s refused, they will inform you of the reason.

Egypt tourist visa fees or costs

The fee of the cost of the Egypt tourist visa is up to the country you apply from. The type of visa is also another factor. For instance, US citizens have to pay $29 for a single tourist visa while a multiple tourist visa is $63. A single entry visa costs $13, and multiple entries cost $89. Some countries might also be free of fees for some types such as:

  • Diplomatic passport holders
  • UN Liaises passers

You would better ask the embassy about the fee and be prepared to pay it.

Egypt tourist visa processing time

The processing time for the Egyptian tourist visa is up to different factors. The time of the year you apply influences it if you apply during the peak tourist season, the processing will become longer. Also, if your documents are not complete and the embassy asks for more, the timing will become longer. However, the embassy will process everything fast and inform you of the decision as soon as possible.

Egypt tourist visa for US citizens

The US citizens do not need to apply for an Egypt tourist visa as they can apply for an Egypt eVisa. The processing application for eVisa is completely online, and the US nationals will receive the visa through your mail. You print the visa and provide it to the Border officials at the port of entry. The one point to remember is that US citizens need to apply for the eVisa at least 7 days before the date they want to enter the country.

The US citizens are allowed to stay in Egypt for 30 days. If you receive a multiple-entry visa, there won’t be a limit on the times to enter the country, but you can not stay for over 30 days on each visit.

Egypt tourist visa COVID-19 regulations

Tourists can enter Egypt for tourism, and the officials are issuing visas. However, the COVID-19 requirements are still in place.

You need to provide a negative PCR test when you arrive in the country. The result of the test is accepted in English or Arabic. The test can not be older than 72 hours before the arrival date in Egypt. The test you take must be based on a nasal or oral swab, and the certificate you provide to officials must be issued by an approved laboratory.

If you come from one of the following countries or have taken a PCR test in one of them, the validity of the test is 96 hours:

Children under 6 years of age do not need COVID-19 tests or vaccination certificates until further notice.

COVID-19 vaccination for Egypt tourist visa

The passengers who have received a vaccination certificate are exempt from taking any PCR tests. The second dose of vaccination must have been received at least 14 days before the date you enter Egypt. The approved vaccines are as follows:

  • AstraZeneca
  • Pfizer.BioNTech

PCR test on arrival

The visitors coming from the following countries need a PCR test on arrival to Egypt:

The passengers coming from the above countries need to stay in a hotel room for 12 or 24 hours until the results of the tests are available.

COVID-19 procedures at the Egyptian airport

When you enter the Egyptian airport, you need to practice a few procedures. Wearing a facial mask is mandatory at every stage. You also need to keep a safe social distance from others. It is particularly true when boarding and disembarking the aircraft.

The airports provide hand sanitizing stations. You are supposed to wash your hands regularly or use alcohol-based sanitizer whenever you can or use personal ones.

When you arrive at one of the Egyptian airports, you need to provide:

  • The medical certificate
  • Public health card
  • Proof of valid health insurance

COVID-19 restrictions for Egypt tourist visa

The foreign visitors entering the country need to respect the law and regulations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The evening curfews have been lifted in Egypt. However, the restaurants and cafes must close by 10.00 pm. The shops also need to close by 9.00 pm.

You need to wear a facial mask everywhere you go and the ones who do not have access to Egyptian public transportation.

Public places are active at 50% of capacity with safety hygiene standards:

  • Restaurants
  • Movie theatres
  • Sports clubs

Places of worship, mosques, and churches, are active but with limitations, and the number of people visiting is reduced.

You would better follow the following instructions for COVID-19 safety procedures:

  • Keep away from large gatherings of people
  • Wash your hands regularly, particularly after touching surfaces
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing with tissue or elbow pit
  • Keep a social distance of at least one meter in public places

COVID-19 testing in coastal governorates

The Egyptian government has advised foreign visitors to take a PCR test when arriving in the governorates of:

  • Red Sea (Hurghada and Marsa Alam)
  • South Sinai (Sharm El Sheikh)
  • Marsa Matrouh

The cost of the PCR test is USD30 but if you have a vaccination certificate of the approved vaccines, you don’t have to pass the PCR test.

After taking the test, you need to isolate yourself until you receive the result of the test. The officials will inform you whether the test is positive and you must continue your isolation for 14 days or if it’s negative and you can leave the hotel. The result of the test will become available in 12-24 hours.

If your symptoms get worse, you must visit a hospital, so it is essential to buy health insurance for your visit to the country.

Impact of the previous visit to Israel on Egypt tourist visa

People ask that if I have visited Israel, will I be banned from entering Egypt? The answer is NO. The Israel entry or exit stamp on your passport does not disqualify you from entering Egypt. However, you might have to get the right of entry into the country and explain the purpose of your visit to Israel. Also, you would better ask the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country whether you will have any difficulty visiting the country or not.

What are the customs regulations for an Egypt tourist visa?

The tourists are allowed to bring only up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds to the country. There is no limit to hard currency but the amount over USD 10,000 must be declared on arrival to the officials. If you carry electrical equipment and video cameras, you must declare it to the officials. You need to inform the Ministry of Telecommunications to bring satellite phones and radio communications equipment to the country and if you don’t notify them, the equipment will be confiscated. When you carry electrical equipment that is mentioned on your passport, you must take them out of the country and if not, you have to pay high rates of customs duty.

If you need to carry certain objects with you to Egypt, contact the embassy and ask what the exact rules are.

Is it legal to bring medication under an Egyptian tourist visa?

Some of the common medications that you take and are considered in the EU or the US might be considered illegal by Egyptian authorities without prior permission. You need the approval of  Egypt’s Ministry of Health to bring your medicine to the country.

In case you enter the country and don’t have permission and the supporting documents for the medication you carry, you may be prosecuted.

You must carry a medical certificate approving the prescription for the medication you take. The medicine must be for a medical condition you suffer from. The certificate must be through a letter from your GP. The GP or health expert must indicate that the medicine:

  • Is for this particular health condition
  • The quantity of medication you take,
  • It’s for your personal usage only.

Let’s sum up…

However, to experience everything this magical country has to offer, you’ll need to apply for an Egypt Visa. Here’s everything you need to know about the process, including different types of visas, applications, and Egypt entry requirements.

Which Egypt Visa is Right for You?

With a few exceptions (countries like UAE, Malaysia , and Hong Kong), nearly all countries will require a visa to enter Egypt . Depending on what you need there are two options available:

How to Apply for an Egypt Visa

There are three ways you can get your Egypt visa. However, your method depends on the trip you are going on and the Egypt entry requirements.

1. Visit the Egyptian embassy

Are you planning on staying longer than 30 days in Egypt? You need to make an appointment with your nearest Egyptian embassy for a physical visa to be attached to your passport. You will also need to visit the embassy if you’re going to Egypt on business.

Additionally, certain countries need to go to the embassy to get an authorized visa—for example, Morocco , Nigeria, and the Philippines . Check the whole list here .

You are required to provide:

  • 2 passport photos (with your name written on the back)
  • 2 copies of your passport photo page
  • A completed application form (downloaded from your embassy website)
  • The visa fee in cash

Note: Depending on where you are applying for your Egypt visa, it can take anywhere from 2-15 days for your visa to process. Contact your embassy to find out more information.

2. Apply for an Egypt Visa Online

The easiest and most convenient way for tourists to apply for an Egypt visa is online. ( Apply here ) This type of visa is called an ‘E Visa’ and it must be applied for at least 7 days before your departure. All you have to do is fill out the application form, providing your:

  • Passport information (your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival in Egypt)
  • Date of arrival and departure
  • Contact information of your tour group or place of residence while in Egypt
  • A photo or scan of your passport photo page

visa

Don’t worry if you’re applying for your Evisa before you’ve booked your flight, as you can estimate your arrival date. However, Egypt entry requirements state that must know at least the first night’s accommodation.

Tip: Have you been to Egypt before? You need to mention this during your Egypt visa application and also provide the date.

What happens after you apply?

Once you have applied, and paid the fee, your E Visa should be granted within the next few days. It will be sent to you via email with a downloadable link. Once it is granted, it is valid for 90 days, so you must enter and leave Egypt within this time. If you apply more than 90 days ahead of your trip, the system will automatically postpone your approval to a time that fits your travel schedule.

3. Egypt Visa on Arrival

There is also the option to apply for your Egypt visa on arrival, which is an easy process. All you need to do is visit an official bank kiosk on arrival at the airport. Here, you pay for your Egypt visa on arrival (25 USD) in cash, but this fee can also be paid in British Pounds or Euros. Once you’ve paid, they will give you a stamp you need to put inside your passport.

Please note: The Egypt visa on arrival only allows for single entry and there may be a waiting line at the kiosk. However, the good news is you don’t require any copies of your passport, so it’s a very simple process. For reliability and ease though, we’d recommend planning ahead and getting the Egypt visa online.

  • Printout of E visa
  • A complete travel itinerary (don’t worry if some of these details change)

How to Get a Visa Extension in Egypt

Chances are you’ll fall in love with Egypt and want to explore for longer than your 30-day allowance. To do so, you’ll need to apply for a visa extension in Egypt. If you don’t, you could risk being fined.

Sadly, you can’t apply for a renewal online; the only option is to go to the Egypt Passport and Immigration Administration in Cairo . It is open every day (except Friday. Saturdays are only for collection) from 8 AM – 2 PM.

Tip: The extension process can take around 2 days (from first appointment to collection), so apply well in advance of your Egypt visa expiration.

visa egypt

What do you need to extend your Egypt visa?

  • 2 copies of passport front page and visa page
  • A passport photo
  • 1670 EGP (approx 107 USD). This is paid in two installments: 1140 EGP on the first visit and 530 EGP on collection. However, you will need extra cash to pay for a passport photo if you don’t already have one.

During the first appointment (which takes roughly 2 hours), you’ll need to provide all the documents above and fill out a form. Two days after, you’ll be asked to come back and collect your visa. This new Egypt visa grants you an automatic 3-month extension, which is plenty of time to explore the beauty of Egypt!

Egypt Visa: Everything You Need to Know

Egypt Tor Logo

Egypt is a fascinating country that attracts millions of tourists every year with its ancient pyramids, temples, museums, and natural wonders. If you are planning to visit Egypt, you may need a visa to enter the country, depending on your nationality and purpose of travel. In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about Egypt visa, including the entry requirements, the covid entry requirements, the visa options for Indians, the visa on arrival, the e-visa, and the vfs global services.

Egypt Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for Egypt vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you are applying for. Generally, you will need the following documents to enter Egypt:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages.
  • A visa or an entry permission stamp, unless you are exempt from visa requirements.
  • A proof of accommodation or a tour booking, if requested by the immigration officers.
  • A proof of sufficient funds or a return ticket, if requested by the immigration officers.

You can check if you need a visa to enter Egypt by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Egypt Covid Entry Requirements

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, Egypt has implemented some additional entry requirements for travelers. These include:

  • A negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours before departure. The test result must be in English or Arabic and have a QR code. Children under six years old are exempt from this requirement.
  • A health declaration form filled online at least two days before arrival. You can access the form at the official Egypt Health Entry Portal. You will receive a QR code after submitting the form, which you need to show at the airport.
  • A health insurance that covers covid-19 treatment in Egypt.

These covid entry requirements may change at short notice, so you should check the latest information with your airline or the official Egypt Tourism Authority  before traveling.

Egypt Visa for Indians

Indian citizens who want to visit Egypt for tourism purposes have two options to obtain a visa: online or on arrival. The online option is the Egypt e-Visa, which allows you to apply for a single-entry or a multiple-entry tourist visa in advance. The single-entry e-Visa is valid for 90 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry e-Visa is valid for 180 days and allows multiple stays of up to 30 days each. You can apply for an e-Visa at least seven days before your trip by filling an online application form and paying a fee of 25 USD for a single-entry e-Visa or 60 USD for a multiple-entry e-Visa. You will receive your e-Visa by email and you need to print it out and present it with your passport at the airport.

The on-arrival option is the Egypt Visa on Arrival, which allows you to obtain a single-entry tourist visa at the airport upon arrival. You need to wait in line at the visa on arrival window, fill out an application form, provide your passport and a photo, and pay a fee of 25 USD in cash (preferably in US dollars). You will receive a visa sticker that you need to attach to your passport. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and allows a stay of up to 30 days.

Egypt Visa on Arrival

The Egypt Visa on Arrival is available for citizens of several countries who are eligible to visit Egypt for tourism purposes. You can check if you are eligible for a visa on arrival by visiting the official Egypt e-Visa Portal or contacting the nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate. To obtain a visa on arrival, you need to follow these steps:

requirements for egypt tourist visa

  • Passports, travel and living abroad
  • Travel abroad
  • Foreign travel advice

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Egypt set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Consulate General for Egypt in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the date you arrive. Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

Visa requirements

British passport holders travelling to Egypt normally need a visa. Visa processing fees are non-refundable.

We advise you to get a visa before you travel, particularly if travelling for work or business. You can apply for a visa from the official Visa2Egypt portal or at your nearest Egyptian Consulate . Tourist visas granted using the e-visa system are valid for a maximum of 3 months.

The online e-visa portal (Visa2Egypt) does not currently accept applications from variant British passport holders (those from British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies).

All British passport holders can get a visa in advance by submitting an application in person or by post to the Egyptian Consulate in London . The specific requirements for the visa are listed on the website.

Alternatively, if you wish to get a visa on arrival, you can do so at approved bank kiosks within airport arrival halls, before reaching immigration counters. The visa fee is 25 US dollars, payable in dollars as the preferred currency, although you may also be able to pay in pounds sterling or euros. Visas granted on arrival are valid for a maximum of 30 days. There’s no need to buy a visa from an agent. In many cases agents will charge more than US$25 for a visa. If you’re harassed by an agent, report the incident to the tourist police in the airport terminal.

If you’re travelling to Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts for up to 15 days, you will receive a free entry permission stamp on arrival. If you intend to travel out of these areas or stay longer than 15 days, you must get a visa.

If you have travelled to one of the South Sinai Red Sea resorts, entered without a visa and your plans have changed, you can normally purchase a visa at Sharm el Sheikh airport to allow you to travel elsewhere.

Applications for visa extensions should be made at Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices. You may have difficulties leaving Egypt with an out of date visa. You will normally have to pay a fine if your visa is out of date by more than 14 days.

For further information and enquiries, contact the Egyptian Consulate in London .

Visa extensions

Apply for visa extensions at the Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices. You may face difficulties if you try to leave Egypt on an expired visa. You may be fined if your visa has expired by more than 14 days.

Contact the Egyptian Consulate in London for more information.

Visas at the Egypt-Sudan Border Crossing

If you’re crossing the border from Sudan, the Egyptian authorities have advised it is still possible to get a visa on arrival for the regular cost of 25 US dollars.

HIV test for work permits

You will need to show your result from a HIV test to apply for a work permit.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need on TravelHealthPro’s Egypt guide . Depending on the country you’re arriving from, this may include a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Egypt . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

You’re allowed to bring in or take out up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds. There is no limit to the amount of hard currency that you can bring in, but you must declare it when you arrive if it’s worth more than 10,000 US dollars.

You must also declare certain valuables, including electrical equipment or video cameras, when you arrive. These will be noted in your passport. You may be asked to show these items again when you leave the country. If you do not have them on you, you may have to pay a high rate of customs duty.

Officials are likely to confiscate satellite phones or radio communications equipment unless you have prior clearance from the Ministry of Telecommunications.

Contact the Egyptian embassy in your country of residence for further information on customs requirements

Felucca boats sailing on the River Nile, at Aswan. Trees are dotted among the buildings in the background.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.

Egypt Visa on Arrival

Egypt Visa on Arrival

Travellers can queue and pay for a visa on arrival in Egypt. Visa on arrival facilities have been available at Egyptian ports of entry for many years.

The alternative to the visa on arrival is the Egypt e-Visa . The modern online system was introduced in 2017 to streamline the visa application process.

If you’re unsure whether to apply for an Egyptian visa online or on arrival, you can use the information on this page to make an informed decision.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Eligible travellers can obtain an Egyptian tourist visa on arrival at immigration kiosks at any of the airport terminals .

If you have not applied for a visa in advance need to:

  • Wait in line at the visa on arrival window
  • Fill out the visa application form and provide documents
  • Pay the visa on arrival fee in cash
  • Attach the Egypt visa sticker to the passport

The visa on arrival must be paid for in one of the 3 accepted currencies (USD, EUR, or GBP) . Card payment is not accepted. You should aim to have the exact amount ready to pay for the Egypt visa .

If you wish to pay for your visa by card, you need to apply online. All major credit and debit cards are accepted.

You can stay in the country for up to 30 days with an Egyptian visa on arrival .

Which countries can get a visa on arrival in Egypt?

Nationals of several countries are eligible to request a visa on arrival in Egypt.

Citizens of some countries are only eligible if they already have a valid visa issued by one of the following countries:

  • New Zealand
  • Any Schengen Area country

If you can apply for the Egyptian e-Visa, then you are also eligible for a visa on arrival. However, you can save time on arrival at the airport by arranging the visa in advance.

Where can you get an Egypt visa on arrival?

You can apply for an Egyptian visa on arrival at border control when arriving in Egypt .

It is currently not advised that travelers cross land borders or checkpoints, as there is not always up-to-date information concerning which checkpoints and border crossings are open or issue a visa on arrival.

International checkpoints where you can get a visa on arrival for Egypt:

  • Cairo International Airport, Cairo
  • Hurghada International Airport, Hurghada
  • St Catherine International Airport, St Catherina
  • Borg El Arab International Airport, Alexandria
  • Sharm El Sheikh International Airport
  • Luxor Airport International Airport

Israeli citizens can now obtain a visa on arrival for South Sinai if they arrange their trip through approved travel agencies.

While visas on arrival are generally only issued at the above airports, the e-Visa for Egypt is accepted at air, land, and sea borders . Passengers with an e-Visa can head straight to border control at the airport.

Can I get a visa on arrival at any Egyptian border?

The visa on arrival is only available at the international airports in Egypt listed above. If you plan to enter Egypt by land, you will need to obtain a visa before traveling .

It's important to check the specific visa requirements for your country of origin and make sure you have all the necessary documents before traveling to Egypt by land. Note that not all border crossings allow entry for foreign tourists , so it's important to check the regulations and restrictions at land borders before traveling.

How much does a visa on arrival in Egypt cost?

You have to pay the visa on arrival fee in cash—British pounds, US dollars, and Euros are accepted. To avoid delays, you should have the exact amount on arrival at the border .

Following the visa requirements and providing the right information will help you to obtain your visa on arrival. However, presenting a valid passport and paying the visa fee is no guarantee of entry .

Difference between Egypt e-Visa and Visa On Arrival

The main difference between the tourist visa on arrival and the electronic visa is that e-Visa applicants obtain the permit online , in advance. If you opt for the visa on arrival, you have to wait until you arrive in Egypt to apply.

For greater peace of mind, many tourists prefer to arrange their visa before travelling. You are not guaranteed a visa on arrival at the border.

The e-Visa is also a convenient choice given that you can complete and submit the application from home , rather than at the airport.

Both the e-Visa and the visa on arrival allow you to stay in Egypt for up to 30 days . Single and multiple-entry online visas are available.

One other difference is that, as mentioned above, you must pay the visa on arrival fee in cash. Electronic visa applicants pay securely online by card.

Egypt e-Visa, the convenient tourism alternative to the visa on arrival

There a few basic visa requirements that you must meet to obtain an Egypt e-Visa . Firstly, you must be from one of the eligible countries, such as United Kingdom , Australia , Canada , the United States , and many European nations.

Secondly, it is necessary to have the following :

  • A passport with 6 months remaining from the date of entry
  • A credit or debit card to pay the e-Visa fee
  • An up-to-date email address to receive the electronic visa

The application form involves entering some basic personal information (such as your name, address, date of birth, and passport details), and answering some simple security-related questions. The process is safe and information is encrypted and secure.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the application form. After the application has been processed, the visa is sent to you by email. You should print a copy of the visa to present at Egyptian border control .

Travel Logistics:

Egypt is well connected through airlines. There are two main airports for international flights - Cairo International Airport and Luxor International Airport. Multiple direct flights from the different airports of India to Egypt run by - Air Arabia, Egypt Air, Etihad Airways and Gulf Air are also available. Flight tickets can cost around  Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 50,000 and will take at least 6 to 9 hours.

You can travel by road which is not so expensive, but complicated due to crossing multiple borders. If you are willing to travel by cruise, then you have to go by Nile cruise crossing all over their maritime boundaries as there is no other option available directly from India to Egypt.

Travelling within Egypt is easy as it is well connected by the roads for local transportation with easy access to car rentals, cabs, shuttle services, and taxis to reach your destination. You can also opt for railways to travel from one city to another within the country. While travelling by train, be careful as tourists are only allowed to use four trains dedicatedly run for visitors and no other public train.

For accommodation, you will have a number of options including hostels, hotels and luxury villas which you can pick according to your budget. Make sure to book your all-day accommodation in advance as you have to submit your itinerary at the airport.

While exploring Egypt can take almost 15 to 20 days with an expense of more than Rs 1.5 lakhs, a shorter trip of 7 to 10 days costing around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh can also be planned.

The official currency of Egypt is Egyptian Pound also known as Geneh and as of 13 May 2024, 1 Egyptian pound is equal to Rs 1.77. As Egypt does not accept Indian currency, do not forget to exchange money at the airports. Egypt is one of the budget-friendly countries in the world for Indian tourists.

Best Time To Travel Egypt:

Egypt has a moderate climate and short seasonal transitions. Just like India, it receives winters from November to March, and summers from May to September.

In winters, temperatures range from 10°C to 15°C in some areas, and in summers, temperatures can rise up to 35°C to 40°C. Therefore, winters are a preferable tourism season, but if you prefer fewer crowds and have a low budget, choose the timing of August to September or March to April.

As a Muslim-majority country, most of the Egyptian population speaks Arabic- the country's official language. Apart from Arabic, people of the centre cities are also well versed in English. However, if you are travelling to any other country, it's better to learn a few basic words to enhance your overall experience. Here are a few words you can learn before or during your trip to Egypt: 'Sabah Al-Khair' (Good Morning), 'Shukran' (Thank You), 'Habibi' (My friend), 'Yalla' (Let's go), and 'Mashi' (Okay or Fine).

Egypt imposes new restrictions on Canadian travellers

Egypt said the measure is in response to canadian restrictions on visas.

requirements for egypt tourist visa

Social Sharing

Canadian passport holders soon will no longer be able to obtain visas upon arrival in Egypt — a new rule that could mean additional headaches for thousands of travellers.

As of Oct. 1, Canadians travelling to Egypt will have to visit Egypt's embassy or a consulate in Canada to apply for a visa before they leave the country, according to Global Affairs Canada's travel page for Egypt.

Previously, travellers could get their visas upon arrival at the airport in Cairo, or obtain an e-visa before departure through the online portal.

The changes initially were set to take effect this Sunday. However, after CBC News published a story about the new rules, Global Affairs Canada issued a statement saying the new visa requirements would take effect Oct. 1.

Canadians with proof of Egyptian citizenship also will have to apply for visas to enter the country as of Oct. 1. Prior to this rule change, Canadians could enter the country without visas if they had Egyptian passports, national ID cards or birth certificates.

An email from the Egyptian embassy in Ottawa laid out the visa application process for Egyptian nationals.

The announcement, sent to Egyptian-Canadians on Monday, cited the "principle of reciprocity" and claimed the rule change is a response to Canadian measures that deny visas to Egyptian citizens. It claims those measures are "offensive in nature to the dignity of the Egyptian state."

Officials at the Egyptian embassy declined to comment when reached by CBC News. CBC has also reached out to Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly's office for comment.

'It's insane'

Adel Boulos, president of the Egyptian Canadian Business Network, says it's not easy for Egyptians to get a visa to come to Canada.

"It's getting more difficult for Egyptians to come to Canada," he said. "I have cases, unbelievable stuff like parents wanting to see their children, people are getting married here and they want their parents and family to come and they can't … It's insane."

But Boulos said the Egyptian government had other options to deal with the situation.

"I would have liked the Egyptian government to take another route by convening a meeting with the Canadian officials to discuss how to help them out in issuing visas faster," he said.

And unanswered questions remain about the visa application process for Egyptian nationals in Canada, he said.

"We have about 300,000 Egyptians living in Canada and most of them travel with their Canadian passports because they didn't renew their Egyptian passports or don't have the national ID," Boulos said.

"People travelling with their Canadian passport because their Egyptian passport is expired, they don't have one, whatever the issue is, they will also be required to get a visa."

CAIRO, EGYPT - FEBRUARY 11: Egyptians celebrate in Tahrir Square upon hearing the news of the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on February 11, 2011 in Cairo, Egypt. Egypt has tried to encourage tourism in recent years. Tourist numbers plummeted following the violent suppression of anti-government demonstrations in 2011.

Egypt is on track to welcome a record-breaking 15 million tourists this year, the country's tourism minister said in April. The country aims to attract 30 million tourists annually by 2028.

Some Egyptian media outlets claimed the news of the stricter visa rules was untrue.

A story in the Egypt Independent, a Cairo-based online newspaper, claimed that the Egyptian cabinet media centre "denied these rumours and added that the centre communicated with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to confirm the matter was false."

But a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada confirmed the new rules for Canadian passport holders would take effect.

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA): Eligibility and Requirements

Published: May 13, 2024

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) is available for most countries in the world. Eligible nationalities can obtain VOA at many of Indonesia’s airports, seaports, and land borders.

The procedure to obtain VOA is very easy. The requirements for VOA are also quite relaxed. Moreover, it has recently become possible to extend VOA online just like Indonesia’s other tourist visas.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: 97 countries
  • Duration of stay: 30 days
  • VOA Fee: 500.000 IDR (~30 USD)
  • Extension: Once for 30 days more

If you haven’t already, read the Indonesia Visa Guide for information on various visa types for tourists, their eligibility and requirements.

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) Sample

VOA validity

Indonesia VOA is valid for 30 days.

You pay and receive your VOA. But once you pass immigration, a “Stay Permit” is issued in your passport which allows you to remain in Indonesia for 30 days.

Any extensions of your visa are technically extensions of your “Stay Permit”. We will look into stay permit extensions later in this article.

Duration of stay

The maximum duration of stay for Indonesia VOA is 30 days.

The day you land is considered Day 1. The last day you are allowed to stay in Indonesia will be written on your “Stay Permit” passport stamp next to “Valid Until”.

For example, if you land on 01 April 2024, you must leave Indonesia on or before 30 April 2024.

Allowed number of entries

Indonesia VOA is single-entry only. Once you leave Indonesia, your VOA is void. If you want to reenter later, you will need to obtain a new VOA.

Allowed ports of entry

You can obtain an Indonesia Visa on Arrival at almost any international airport, seaport, and overland border, including Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Medan, Makassar, etc.

Here is the full list.

Land borders

Voa extension.

Indonesia VOA is extendable one time for an additional 30 days.

You will receive a “Stay Permit” of 30 days when you obtain VOA. This stay permit can be extended for an additional 30 days for a total of 60 days stay in Indonesia.

The extended duration is added to the original duration. Even if you extend early, you will get 60 days in total.

For example, if you enter Indonesia using VOA on 01 April 2024 and extend your stay permit on 15 April 2024, you will receive your extension until 30 May 2024. That means you must leave Indonesia on or before 30 May 2024.

Indonesia Visa on Arrival Requirements

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) Eligible Countries

Who is eligible for Indonesia VOA

In total, 97 countries are eligible for the Indonesia Visa on Arrival This includes the 9 ASEAN countries plus Timor-Leste that are visa-exempt.

Visa-Exemption is non-extendable where as VOA is. Therefore, if you come from a Visa-Exempt country, you can still obtain a VOA if you plan to stay longer than 30 days.

This is the full list of eligible countries:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Philippines
  • Saudi Arabia
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • Timor-Leste
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Documents required for VOA

The following documents are required for Indonesia VOA.

Boarding pass

Return or onward ticket.

VOA is issued either when paying for the VOA or when clearing immigration. You will be asked to present these documents wherever the VOA is issued.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months when entering Indonesia. Your passport must also contain at least one blank page. The VOA and Stay Permit stickers take at least half a page.

You may or may not be asked to present your boarding pass for the flight you have arrived from. This depends on the airport and immigration officer.

Personal experience

While paying for my VOA at Bali airport, I somehow lost my boarding pass for the flight I arrived on. Luckily the immigration officer did not ask for my boarding pass. I cannot guarantee whether or not a boarding pass is required for VOA. But if it is, make sure to hold on to it till you clear immigration.

You may be asked to present proof of onward travel . You can present your ticket out of Indonesia within 30 days.

If you have plans to extend your visa and have a ticket out in 60 days, you may have to do some explaining especially at the flight check-in. Immigration is aware so they may understand. To be on the safe side, you can get an onward ticket within 30 days to avoid questions.

Visa on Arrival fee

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) Fee Receipt

The Visa on Arrival fee is 500,000 IDR (around 30 USD). You can pay in IDR or another common foreign currency like the USD, EUR, or AUD.

At some airports, for example, Jakarta and Bali, you may pay by credit or debit card.

There are ATMs just beside the Visa on Arrival payment desks.

Visa on Arrival Process at Bali Airport

Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali

Obtaining VOA at Bali Airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport – DPS) is a 2-step process.

Step 1: VOA Payment

Step 2: voa issuance.

When you arrive at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, follow the signs and walk towards immigration.

Near the immigration, you will see the signs for “VOA Payment”. Approach a VOA payment desk and present your passport.

You will be asked for your preferred currency for payment. Tell them your preferred currency and they will tell you the exact amount you must pay in that currency.

For Indonesian Rupiah, it’s 500,000 IDR. But for other currencies, it varies depending on the exchange rate.

In March 2024, it was 33 USD.

After processing your VOA payment, they will return your passport with 2 copies of the VOA payment receipt.

At Ngurah Rai International Airport, VOA is issued at the immigration. So after paying the VOA fee, head to the immigration and join the lines.

When it’s your turn, present your passport, boarding pass and the 2 copies of your VOA fee to the immigration officer.

The immigration officer will stick VOA and Stay Permit stickers in your passport. They will retain one copy of the VOA fee. The immigration officer will give your passport and one copy of your VOA fee back to you.

The immigration officer may or may not ask for your onward ticket. They also may or may not ask any questions.

Personal Experience I was asked how many days I plan to stay in Bali and a copy of my onward ticket.

After receiving your passport, check your stay permit to make sure all information is accurate including your “date of entry” and “valid until”.

After immigration, fill out the electronic customs declaration and scan the QR code to clear the customs and enter Indonesia

How to Extend Indonesia VOA

Extend online.

Indonesian Immigration is moving toward a complete digitalization of its visas, including making the Visa on Arrival extendable online.

It should be possible to extend VOA online in a manner similar to the extension process for the eVOA.

Prerequisites

When you land, you will be asked to register an account with one of the visa websites: Evisa or Molina . Make sure to use a valid email address.

Shortly after passing immigration, you will receive an email from “DIREKTORAT JENDERAL IMIGRASI REPUBLIK INDONESIA”  saying that “Your ITAS has been activated”. What this effectively means is that you now have a valid stay permit.

The email may also contain a PDF attachment of the stay permit.

How to Extend Online

To extend the VOA, you should go to the Home Page of either visa website and click on “Extend My Visa”. This will bring you to the Retrieve Page .

After you enter your personal details, a list of your past and current visas will show up. Click the “Details” button next to your most recent one, then click the “Extend” button. Then just follow the procedure.

You will have to submit a PDF of your passport, an onward flight ticket and complete the application form, then pay. The extension is issued automatically and sent to your email as a PDF attachment.

Extend In Person (Offline)

If you encounter any problems with the online extension, you can extend by visiting the Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi) in person.

You can do so independently by going to the nearest office. You will have to visit 3 times in total:

  • On the first visit, you will hand over your passport and pay.
  • A few days later you will have to go back and complete biometrics – fingerprints and a photo.
  • When the extension is ready you will be notified via email. Go back one last time to collect your passport with the visa extension stamp.

Alternatively, you can use one of the many visa extension agents. They will charge you a premium (usually around 800.000 IDR instead of the standard 500.000 IDR for extending) but you will only have to go to Immigration once for the biometrics. The agent will take care of the whole process for you. Some will even pick you up and drive you to the Immigration Office when it’s time.

Do not leave doing the extension until the last moment. The whole process takes about a week.

Palestinian band escapes horrors of war but members' futures remain uncertain

They stroll Doha’s waterfront promenade and sing softly about children who are now free of pain

DOHA, Qatar — They stroll Doha’s waterfront promenade and sing softly about children who are now “birds in heaven,” flying free of the pain of the war in Gaza .

For the Palestinian group Sol Band, it seems surreal that weeks ago they were hiding from Israeli shelling .

“I just want the war to end,” said Rahaf Shamaly, the band’s main vocalist and only woman. “I want to return to Gaza, walk and clean up its streets, hug my family, and sing with the band in the place where we started from.”

Five of the band’s seven musicians returned to Gaza in August to work on their next album.

“We had a lot of music and performances planned,” said Fares Anbar, the band’s percussionist.

But on Oct. 7, Hamas , along with other militants, attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 others hostage. Israel retaliated with a military campaign that has so far killed more than 35,000 people and leveled large swaths of Gaza.

In April, the five bandmates were able to leave Gaza via Egypt to Qatar .

The band — which formed in 2012 and plays both traditional Arabic songs and their own modern pop songs — has long served as a refuge for its members who grew up in Gaza amid grinding poverty and other hardships. Their home, a 360-square-kilometer (140-square-mile) enclave, has been blockaded for years by Egypt and Israel. Its population of 2.3 million Palestinians has suffered through previous rounds of war between Israel and Hamas, which has ruled the strip since 2007.

“Living under a siege, an occupation, and living through very difficult circumstances … music was my only escape since I was a child,” the band’s founder and percussionist, Said Fadel, said.

Music shaped Fadel’s life. His grandfather was one of the first percussionists in the area and his grandmother played the oud, a lute-like stringed musical instrument common in the Middle East and Africa.

Of Sol Band’s songs, “Raweq Wa Haddy,” or “Chill Down,” is their most famous. The lyrics that promise “great days coming back,” now seem a lifetime away for people who are moving from place to place, hiding from airstrikes.

After returning to Gaza in August to record, the five members of the band filmed themselves surviving the attacks and shared the videos online whenever an internet connection allowed. Music remained their lifeline and their main hope; they created songs, often amid the rubble, with sounds of explosions in the background. They filmed music videos from where they sheltered, urging people not to lose hope and remain resilient in the face of adversity.

Some songs touched on those killed by Israeli airstrikes, particularly children.

“My children are birds in heaven, lucky is heaven to have them,” one song goes. “All my life I hoped to raise them and see them grow up before my eyes.”

In shelters and camps across Gaza, Sol Band’s five members held activities for displaced children to keep their minds off what was happening. Anbar, the band’s percussionist, even taught some how to keep a beat as a drummer.

They posted videos of themselves in tents , playing the guitar and drums, with smiling children who sang along.

“The children’s interaction with the music, and how they forgot everything that is happening around them … it proved to me the importance of music in our lives and the effect it has in the Gaza Strip,” he said.

The five band members who left Gaza via Egypt to Qatar had been scheduled to perform on the first stop of their tour “The Journey Begins” at a Palestinian culture festival in Doha. Though the band has achieved fame internationally, like other Palestinians they hold travel documents that often involve complicated requirements, and at times they face outright visa rejections.

“Our passports are Palestinian, (and our) birthplace Gaza,” Anbar said. “This made it very difficult for us to get visas.”

With pending shows in Belgium and Tunisia, there is little guarantee that they will make it there. And if their visa situation is not sorted out in Qatar, the five will eventually have to return to Gaza — and an uncertain future.

“Would the plans we had before the war still happen?” asked Hamada Nasrallah, a vocalist. “We have no clear answers.”
