As part of the city-backed Finders Keepers program, over 3,000 glass orbs are dispersed across Lincoln City's shoreline every year. In 1973, a retired Connie Hansen moved back to Oregon in search of a climate to continue her studies and interest in botany. Connie cultivated a spectacular garden over the next two decades in Lincoln City, filled with irises, azaleas, and many types of flowering plants. The garden became home to Connie's favorite, rhododendrons, which still bloom today in all colors and sizes.

After Connie's passing in 1993, the community adopted her garden as their own. Today, the Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy preserves the one-acre garden and invites the public to enjoy the botanical space. Siletz Bay is a massive estuary home to marshes, sloughs, and mudflats at the southern edge of Lincoln City. Much of the wetland environment is designated as the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge .

Regatta Park is on the western shore of Devil's Lake, easily accessible with a short drive on NE 14th street off the 101. The large wooden playground structure perhaps receives the most attention. This fenced-in play structure is massive, especially in the eyes of children, and caters to hours of energy-burning excitement.

Regatta Park is also home to picnic tables; shade trees; and a musical garden, where kids and adults can make some noise. Kids at the park also enjoy visiting the large friendly dragon statue at the top of the park, known as Sparky the Wish Guardian.

It's not all coastal attractions in Lincoln City – the adjacent inland Siuslaw National Forest offers luster of its own. The family-friendly Drift Creek Falls provides no better example of forested appeal. This stunning waterfall hike is accessible from Lincoln City with a 15-mile drive on forest service roads.

It's approximately a three-mile trip hiking to the falls and back. The elevation gain is minimal along the way, and the path is well marked, making it a relatively accessible hike and great for families. What makes this hike memorable is the suspension bridge encountered right before the falls. This 240-foot-long bridge sits 100 feet above Drift Creek and gives a spectacular view of the rushing water.

The D River flows approximately 120 feet from Devils Lake into the ocean, right smack dab in the middle of Lincoln City. This river is touted as the world's shortest, and it offers recreation at both its inlet and outlet. A large parking lot sits on the west side of the 101, on the river's south bank. Here, a few steps lead down to the sprawling beach. Flushing restrooms and picnic tables are available at the recreation site. And miles of beach surround the site, offering almost unlimited beach walking adventures. Several local establishments bring together the community of Lincoln City. Alongside abundant tourist attractions, the town also features places for locals to gather. The Lincoln City Cultural Center best exemplifies this community mindfulness.

Housed in a historic Delake school building, the Cultural Center exudes a scholarly and hip vibe the moment you enter the door. The PJ Chessman Gallery at the center features 12 shows a year from local and regional artists. The Cultural Center is also home to the Sunday Farmers & Crafters Market .

And the Yaquina Head Lighthouse itself offers one of the most postcard-pretty scenes in the region.

The drive from Lincoln City to Yaquina Head is half the fun. The route on the 101 drives right through the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast , also known as Depoe Bay . This city sits at the edge of a sheer rock face, offering a great view of resident and migrating wildlife.

If you’re a geography guru and have never heard of Lincoln City, Oregon before, don’t worry.

Lincoln City is located on the coast of Oregon. It’s approximately 100 miles southwest of Portland (2 hours and 14 minute drive) and has an elevation of 20 feet. If you fly into Portland and rent a car, you will have a beautiful drive southwest through portland and down highway 99 to the coast.  

The Population of Lincoln City

Just because I am writing about a popular Oregonian coastal city doesn’t mean the population is large and comparable to other popular coastal cities like Miami, San Francisco, and Atlantic City. Oregon is special in that it’s still very rural. If you imagine having the sandy beach to yourself, it is possible in Lincoln City. It is not possible in Miami unless you own private beach property.

So what is the population of Lincoln City?

Approximately 9,000 residents live in this charming coastal city. During the peak summer months, the city can have up to 30,000 visitors. (This is why one of the main job sources in Lincoln City is tourism. I will chat more on that topic later on.) Overall, it’s a small city with a great atmosphere for families.

Speaking of families, I have compiled a list of population statistics below on Lincoln City. Some folks find this to be helpful when making a decision on relocating.

Geographical Landscape and Climate for Lincoln City

As previously stated, Lincoln City is situated in Lincoln County along the scenic Pacific Coast. To be more specific, it’s located in the central portion of the state. The coastal city has several natural borders such as Devil’s Lake and the majestic Pacific Coast Range on its eastern side. The Pacific Ocean borders the city to the western side. The popular and beautiful Cascade Head borders the city from the north whereas the famous Siletz Bay borders the city from the south.

Since Lincoln City is situated on the central Oregonian coastline, it enjoys a mild maritime climate. It never gets too warm or too cold in Lincoln City! If you are itching to get away from frigid winter temperatures, then you will enjoy the average daytime winter temperature in Lincoln City: 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t worry! The wintertime low temperatures rarely drop below freezing.

Summertime temperatures are also mild and rarely reach hot, scorching numbers. The typical daytime temperature during the summer is 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Only when you drive a few miles inland will you feel those summer temperatures climb to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. It really does pay to stay close to the beach!

As for precipitation averages, Lincoln City receives approximately 76 inches of rain during the year. Very little of that precipitation is snowfall. As is typical for the Pacific Northwest, most of the city’s rainfall accumulates during the winter months.

I had briefly mentioned earlier that Lincoln City is known for its kite festivals. Well, you cannot fly a kite without wind! Lincoln City is known for its breezes due to its geographical position on the coast and surrounded by mountain ranges and other various factors. During the summer, these persistent breezes flow from the northwest. During the winter, these persistent breezes flow from the southwest. Amazingly, it’s like clockwork and everyone knows from which direction the wind blows in Lincoln City. Why? Because everyone owns a kite! In fact, many tourists flock to Lincoln City just for the famous breezes and kite flying opportunities.

And, in case you were wondering, the air quality in Lincoln City is consistently excellent year-round. This works wonders for folks who struggle with allergies and asthma!

The Recreational Activities In Lincoln City

Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area

This is a 680-acre lake sits just east of Lincoln City. Everyone who visits enjoys picnics, fishing, boating, skiing, camping, wading, and strolling. If you are a fisherman, you will enjoy the variety of fish that inhabit the lake. The lake is home to largemouth bass, rainbow trout, catfish, black crappie, bluegill, and more. You may also enjoy the sights and sounds of gorgeous migratory birds such as ducks and geese. The area is also known to house bald eagle nests although I do not recommend going near them.

Summer and Fall Kite Festivals

Lincoln City is known as the capitol of kite flying. Nowhere else in the country has the perfect and continuous kite flying conditions as Lincoln City, Oregon. I’m sorry, but it’s just a fact! The city celebrates this by hosting TWO annual kite festivals per year. The Summer Kite Festival and the Fall Kite Festival. The summer festival is typically held in June while the fall festive is typically held in early October. It’s the opportunity to relive childhood and forget everything on adulting for a little bit! Visit any of the city’s kite shops, purchase your colorful and fun kite, and fly all of life’s stressors away!

Go Surfing and Catch Some Waves

Lincoln City is also known for having some serious waves. All of that wind offers more opportunities than just flying kites. If you’re a serious surfer, Lincoln City will be your dream city! Check out the waves at Road’s End which is on the northern side of the city. You won’t regret it!

And if you are an expert surfer, check out the waves offshore on Nelscott Reef. This place offers a once-in-a-lifetime surfing experience but only when the weather conditions are right. It is possible to see waves as high as 50 feet on Nelscott Reef! This is a rare phenomenon that is experienced only in a few locations worldwide. Lincoln City is one of those places! And you best believe that when other expert surfers catch wind of the perfect weather conditions for those waves, they will flock to the opportunity. You can’t say that I did not warn you!

Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy

If you love gardens, flowers, colors, and everything nature-y, then you will love the Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy in Lincoln City. It provides a unique garden experience by showcasing the rare Japanese iris. Hundreds of years ago, this Japanese flower was only allowed to be enjoyed by royalty. Today, it is enjoyed by anyone who has the honor of cultivating it! You can take a pleasant and serene nature walk through the colorful garden. It’s best to visit during the spring and summer when the flowers are in full bloom.

Lincoln City earns most of its revenue through tourism. In fact, the City Economic Development makes extra efforts to support tourism marketing. You will find several investment resources for anyone who is eager to venture into tourism entrepreneurship. Due to the city’s heavy focus on tourism, their job market consists of many opportunities in food service, retail, tours, outdoor activities, hospitality, and more. For the past year, the job growth has been negative. However, given the pandemic circumstances, I don’t think this would come as a surprise for anyone. The job growth decrease has not been detrimental, thankfully, at 0.2%.

The unemployment rate has not been terrible either. The rate currently sits at 4.5%. Keep in mind that tourism is the most popular job sector in Lincoln City. Thus, much of the job growth and unemployment have come from the inability to host visitors and travelers during the pandemic.

The History of Lincoln City

Lincoln City came to be in the early spring of 1965. In the grand scheme of things, this is a young city. Its history is different from most cities in that its formation involved a combination of several pre-existing communities. These pre-existing communities were known as Delake, Taft, Cutler City, Nelscott, and Oceanlake. And as you would guess, each of these pre-existing communities has unique histories of their own.

Delake sits near Devil’s Lake. Interestingly, its name is derived from the Finnish residents’ pronunciation of Devil’s Lake. And, the pronunciation just stuck around! Delake did establish a post office in 1924, but it only lasted for three years until it was moved to the community of Oceanlake.

The name, “Oceanlake” was derived from its geographical position between the Pacific Ocean and Devil’s Lake. As previously mentioned, the post office was established in 1927 and did not move until Lincoln City became incorporated. Prior to joining the annexation of Lincoln City, Oceanlake had a mind of its own. In 1945, Oceanlake annexed the nearby Wecoma Beach and became incorporated as its own city.

The community of Taft was named after our 27th U.S. President Taft. The community established a post office right before his presidency in 1906. At the time, Taft was the U.S. Secretary of War. The post office remained in operation until the incorporation of Lincoln City in 1965.

Cutler City

Cutler City was created by Mr. and Mrs. George cutler who claimed they had purchased the property from Chief Charley DePoe who was a member of the Siletz Tribe. Cutler City is situated on the eastern shore of the beautiful Siletz Bay. The post office was established in 1930 and remained in operation until the incorporation of Lincoln City in 1965.

Nelscott was founded in 1926 by Mr. Charles Nelson and Dr. W.G. Scott. As you guessed, the community was named after these two fellows. The post office was established in 1929 and remained in operation until the incorporation of Lincoln City in 1965. The famous Nelscott Reef is located here and has been named one of the best places to surf on the Pacific Ocean!

So, how did Lincoln City come up with its name? The city came from the combining of five communities, but none of their names made the cut. Believe it or not, Lincoln City’s name was born from an elementary school’s naming contest. There had already been some controversy on which of the five communities would use their name for the newly formed city. So, why not allow the local children to decide on a name? The winning name was in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. It was the perfect solution given that one of the communities was already named in honor of a former U.S. president.

This charming city, which is situated along the Pacific Coast on U.S. Highway 101, is the combination of five older communities and named in honor of our 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln. In addition to this, it has one of the best places to surf along the Pacific Coast.

Real Estate and Relocation Considerations in Lincoln City

Since Lincoln City is a coastal town, the real estate market is always hoppin’. Everyone desires to live on the beach! The home prices in Lincoln City are, on average, low for coastal properties. If you are interested in purchasing your new home in Lincoln City, you may be pleased to find that the average home cost is only $295,000. When compared to other areas of the state, this is a spectacular price!

The homes in Lincoln City are young as well. You can expect the average home age to be around 41 years of age.

If you are not interested in purchasing a home at the moment but prefer renting, then you aren’t the only one. In fact, 34% of Lincoln City’s residents rent their homes! You will find plenty of options for rent such as apartments, single-family houses, and condos.

15 unforgettable + fun things to do in Lincoln City, OR: Oregon Coast

Dramatic cliffs. Wide beaches. Antiques. Stunning hikes. Migrating wildlife. And, of course, saltwater taffy. There are plenty of reasons why Lincoln City is one of our favorite towns on the Oregon Coast. With so many things to do in Lincoln City, it’s no wonder my family and I return many times each year.

Located less than two hours from Portland, OR, Lincoln City is an easily accessible beach town close to the city. Lincoln City is one of our favorite stops on the Oregon Coast. Highway 101 runs all along the coastline. Lincoln City is about halfway between Newport and Tillamook, OR—an ideal stop on an Oregon Coast road trip!

Read on for all the best things to do in Lincoln City, OR. From hiking and agate beaches to kite festivals and lighthouses, you’ll never face a dull moment in this Oregon Coast town.

Visit the beach (of course!)

It should go without saying that one of the best things to do in Lincoln City, OR is to visit the beach. The beaches on the Oregon Coast are gorgeous, even in rainy weather. Do like a local and don’t let a little wet stop you from exploring the beaches!

Fun fact: Did you know Lincoln City has the longest stretch of beach among all Oregon Coast cities?

These are a few of the best beaches in Lincoln City.

South Beach

We typically access this stretch of the beach in Lincoln City via 51st Street. Plenty of parking and public restrooms make this a convenient spot to hit the beach.

We also like walking west, past Mo’s and along the mouth of the Siletz River. It’s fun to wander beneath the pier. The water of the Siletz is shallow here (and a bit warmer than the Pacific).

Finally, you can borrow (for free) a beach wheelchair from the Looking Glass Inn.

D River Beach Access

This stretch of beach is probably Lincoln City’s most famous coastline. The wide, flat beach seems to stretch forever.

Kids love to play in the D River here, too. Just watch out for seagulls: These birds know that the beach gets a lot of visitors, so keep an eye on your picnic supplies!

The D River State Recreation Site also has public restrooms.

Road’s End State Park: North Beach

This stretch of beach in Lincoln City also has huge rocks exposed at low tide. You know what that means: tide pools!

The thing that makes this part of the beach unusual is that cars can drive onto the sand in a designated area. A paved ramp on NW 15th St leads down to the beach, where you can park to watch the sunset or set up for a day of play.

Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area

I love the beach at Fogarty Creek, a few minutes south of Lincoln City. As the name suggests, a creek runs through this beach. You can access both sides of the beach (without getting your feet wet!) by following either path from the parking lot.

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for agates. Fogarty Creek is a terrific agate beach near Lincoln City.

Hike and bird watch in Siletz Bay

On the south end of Lincoln City, the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge is home to songbirds, waterfowl, newts and hundreds of other species. Coho and Chinook salmon also make their way from the ocean upriver to their spawning grounds via the Siletz River, making this area critical to preserving these at-risk fish.

Wildlife are best seen in the morning and evening, but you’re likely to see animals anytime. What’s more, the type of animals you see will vary by season as well as the tide, so you might see different creatures each time you visit.

Walk the half-mile nature trail, bring your binoculars for bird watching or paddle the Siletz River by canoe, kayak or paddle board. Just know that dogs are not allowed in the wildlife refuge.

Explore Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Cobble Beach

Just a half-hour south of Lincoln City, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse stands watch over the dramatic cliffs of the Oregon Coast. Oregon’s oldest lighthouse also overlooks seabird nesting grounds and a resting spot for local sea lions.

One of my favorite things to do at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is to explore Cobble Beach at low tide. This unique beach isn’t made of sand but rather round volcanic rocks. And when the tide is out, you can check out the many creatures that live in the tide pools here.

Explore the cave in Devils Punchbowl

Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area is a dramatic and beyond cool stop on the Oregon Coast. Over centuries, the relentless waves carved a cave into the cliffside here. Then the roof of the cave collapsed, leaving a hollow rock formation shaped like, you guessed it, a bowl.

Incoming waves churn and bubble in the punchbowl during high tide. At low tide, you can hike into the cave and explore the tide pools on the north end of the park. This is an easy, kid-friendly walk that starts on a steep path then continues along the beach. Just make sure to keep an eye on the tide tables. You don’t want to get caught by the incoming tide.

Devils Punchbowl is also a popular spot for whale watching. You might be able to snag a picnic table for an open-air lunch, but know this is a busy site.

Find a float in a beach-wide treasure hunt

Year-round, locals hide handmade glass floats along the seven miles of coastline in Lincoln City. They tuck these gorgeous floats behind driftwood, under seaweed and in the sand above the high tide mark. And while the city used to hide these floats one weekend a year during a festival, glass blown floats are now hidden on the beach year-round through the Finders Keepers initiative!

You never know when you might find one. Local artists donate 3,000 floats every year—that’s nearly 10 a day—so it might just pay off to keep an eye out for a beautiful glass orb! And if you do find one, register it on the Finders Keepers float web site . You’ll get information about the artist who created the float.

Note: Float Fairies, aka the people who hide the glass floats in Lincoln City, have temporarily stopped the program during COVID-19. Check the organization’s web site for details on reopening.

Walk among flowers at the Connie Hansen Garden

I’ve been visiting Lincoln City, OR my entire life—and only discovered the Connie Hansen Garden this year!

This hidden gem on the Oregon Coast is tucked away on a residential street. Pretty much only locals know about it, which makes this garden a restful spot year-round.

Botanist Connie Hansen turned this land from a swamp into a beautifully curated garden. She grew her favorite flower, the iris, along with rhododendrons, azaleas, primroses and more. Then, when she passed away, her family turned the estate into a Lincoln City park.

Stroll along the winding paths and over adorable footbridges, pause at the ponds and listen to songbirds. The Connie Hansen Garden is now one of my favorite things to do in Lincoln City.

Find fossils at Prehistoric Oregon

Prehistoric Oregon is one of the many shops along Highway 101 in Lincoln City. Stop by to browse the gifts, and don’t miss taking a look at the many fossils in this shop!

Depending on the day’s stock, you might see a megalodon tooth, a cave bear skull, trilobites or a spinosaurus claw. The shop also sells jewelry, rocks, gems and minerals.

Browse books at Robert’s Bookshop

I love independent book stores and my kids, both voracious readers, have inherited my obsession. That’s just the first reason why we love Robert’s Bookshop in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Yes, the narrow aisles between packed bookshelves are perfect to get lost in. But the most unique thing about this Oregon Coast book store is the plane that sticks out of the wall!

Yep, you read that right. The quirky owner of Robert’s Bookshop bought an old plane and installed it in the wall. It looks as if the plane is crashing through the side of the building. In reality, the owner uses it as an office.

Make sure to stop at this unique book store, along Highway 101, the next time you stay in Lincoln City.

Find antique treasures

Like many towns on the Oregon Coast, Lincoln City hosts dozens of antique stores. Vintage clothes, collectibles, antique furniture, first editions and more—these densely packed shops hold just about every treasure you can think of (plus many more you never knew you wanted!).

I like the Streetcar Village, on the south end of Lincoln City, OR, in part because each of the shops is housed in old streetcars. (My kids think it’s  so cool .) Or check out the Little Antique Mall, which isn’t little at all. With roughly 80 vendors, this spot is the largest antique mall on the Oregon Coast.

These shops are also locally owned, so your money stays in this coastal community.

Watch artists blow glass

I’ve never been able to figure out exactly why, but the Oregon Coast is glassblowing central. Shops up and down Highway 101 sell art, ornaments and orbs handcrafted by local artists. Check out the blown glass galleries (carefully!) or watch artists in action at the Lincoln City Glass Center . You can see glassblowers turn hard hunks of colored glass into a vase or float by turning their work in piping-hot kilns. Keep an eye out for other blown glass galleries, too.

The Lincoln City Glass Center also offers classes and workshops on glassblowing if you want to try your own hand at the ancient craft.

Dive into the past at the Northern Lincoln County Historical Museum

The Northern Lincoln County Historical Museum is a volunteer-run site that shares this area’s history. Learn about how logging shaped this region and how fishing still fuels the economy.

Our favorite part, unsurprisingly, was the terrific kids’ area. On the second floor, a big room includes dress-up clothes, coloring pages, books, games and a forest’s worth of hand puppets. Maxine didn’t want to leave!

Downstairs, check out gigantic sea floats and artwork from the area’s Native American tribes.

The historical museum in Lincoln City’s admission is free/by donation, so you have nothing to lose by stopping by. You’ll definitely learn something.

Check out the murals in Lincoln City

We love stopping for a picture in front of the Oregon mural in Lincoln City. They paint the current year, so we can keep track of our many visits to Lincoln City—and how much our kids grow!

The Oregon mural in Lincoln City is located on the wall of the Lincoln City Collective, a local shop selling t-shirts, hats and more. A public parking lot is directly next to the shop. This mural is also directly across the street from the Northern Lincoln County Historical Museum.

We also stop at the To the Beach mural in Lincoln City. This mural is located on the corner of Highway 101 and SW 51st St. This is where you turn to go to Mo’s Clam Chowder.

Finally, stop at the awesome crab mural next to the D River Wayside Park. The street art is on the wall of Pier 101, a seafood restaurant off Highway 101.

Throughout much of the year, steady winds make Lincoln City, OR an ideal spot to fly a kite. Pick any of the town’s many beaches, unspool a bit of string and let your kite soar!

Lincoln City is full of shops that sell kites, if you don’t have your own.

Finally, the Lincoln City Kite Festival brings hundreds of enthusiasts to the beaches in the summer and fall. These aren’t only your usual diamond-shaped kites, though. At the festivals, they come in all different shapes (whales, squids, giant teddy bears) and sizes (big, bigger, biggest!). Fun activities, from a kid’s parade to expert performances, make the festivals all-day activities.

Hike across a suspension bridge

If you’re not afraid of heights (or are willing to muscle up, buttercup), don’t miss Drift Creek Falls. This easy 3-mile hike takes you across a 100-foot-high suspension bridge. Looking down is optional!

Play in Siletz Bay

Do like the local wildlife and play where the Siletz River stretches to the Pacific Ocean. Siletz Bay’s northern side includes a wide stretch of sand at low tide (though it’s largely underwater at high tide). 

You’ll recognize it from the very determined tree growing on a tiny island in the bay. 

Walk toward the ocean to explore under the docks and get close to the resident seal colony. Or climb over the driftwood closer to Highway 101. Either way, you’ll have plenty to explore in this unique thing to do in Lincoln City!

Bike on the beach

Have you ever heard of a fat tire bike? These specially designed bicycles have extra-wide tires to grip the sand so you can cycle up and down the beach.

With all these things to do in Lincoln City—and more—it’s no wonder that my family continues to return to this Oregon Coast town again and again. We visit as often as we’re able, and we still haven’t explored all the attractions here.

Lincoln City is one of my family’s fave spots close to home! In all these years we have yet to find a glass float on the beach but I think we time our visits when they’re not doing them. Rebecca, I’m so excited for you to visit! I recommend making a plan to watch the sunset (aim to arrive at the beach 30 mins before sunset). Also, many of the antique stores have sales in November around Thanksgiving. There aren’t a ton of events scheduled because of the season and to prevent virus transmission. Was there in 94. Beach was cold. Visited a woman on Devil’s lake who was involved in the recovery of gold from a shipwreck.

The Oregon Coast definitely is colder than other places… and sometimes is beautiful weather! We were in Lincoln City last weekend and it was swimming suit weather on the beach. It just depends on the day!

13 Fantastic Experiences In Beautiful Lincoln City, Oregon

The Oregon Coast is one of my happy places, and Lincoln City is one of my favorite destinations along the coast. With miles of sandy beaches, treasure hunting for hand-made glass floats, estuaries with crabbing and clamming opportunities, fabulous birding opportunities, and a fresh-water lake next door, there are a myriad of options to enjoy the area.

There are two routes to choose from Portland, Oregon . One is to travel on Highway 99 from South Portland and join Highway 18 to the coast. This route can be very slow. I prefer to travel the I-5 South to Salem, merge onto Highway 22, and then take Highway 18. 

Here are my recommendations of 13 fantastic experiences in beautiful Lincoln City, Oregon .

1. Stroll The Beach

Stroll the 7.5 miles of sandy beach throughout Lincoln City, which has the most beaches of any city along the Oregon Coast. Enjoy the breathtaking views, listen to the pounding of the surf, feel the sand between your toes and the ocean mist on your skin. Build a sandcastle or fly a kite. Search for agates and jasper. 

My favorite beaches are D-River Wayside and Taft Bay. As you are driving Highway 101, you will be awe-struck when you reach D-River Wayside. A second favorite beach is along Taft Bay, where you will find lots of driftwood. Check this link for other popular Lincoln City Beaches. 

Lincoln City offers beachcombing “exploriences” during which local guides lead walks along the beach. Check this link for available dates.

Pro Tip: Do remember beach safety as you enjoy your stroll. Never turn your back to the ocean; sneaker waves can appear anytime. Avoid walking amongst large logs along the beach. The logs can soak up the water and weigh up to a ton. They roll very easily, so stay off!

2. Search For Hand-Blown Glass Floats

Daily, throughout the year, Lincoln City’s Float Fairies hide thousands of hand-blown glass floats for you to enjoy searching for. You may find the glass floats in the area from Roads End to Siletz Bay. Check for basic rules of the hunt. There are even “Special Drops” throughout the year. While hunting, be mindful of fragile ecosystems and remember your beach safety.

Crafted by local artists, it is yours if you find a float. You may register your find at this link . Once registered, you will receive a Certificate of Authenticity and the artist’s bio.

3. Create Your Own Glass Art

Watch glass work demonstrations, learn about local glass artists, then create your own paperweight or float at local studios. Lincoln City Glass Center and Mor Art Glass are two venues to check out. You can become as involved as you like. Mor Art Glass offers several glassmaking classes. Plan to spend a morning or afternoon learning about glass blowing.

Pro Tip: If you choose to become involved with glass blowing, be aware of safety issues. Do wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and avoid loose fleece garments.

4. Learn About History At The North Lincoln Historical Museum

Enjoy several hours learning about the history of Lincoln County at the North Lincoln Historical Museum . Housed in a historic 1941 firehall, the museum features Native American exhibits, pioneer life exhibits from the late 1880s to mid-1920s, and exhibits from 1920 to the city’s incorporation in 1965.

Rotating exhibits such as “What If Heros Were Not Welcome Home” examines the prejudice against Japanese American Veterans after WWII. “The Devils of North Lincoln Country” tells the story of a tourism campaign of 1933.

Enjoy also the interactive virtual exhibit where you can “dig into” the story of specific artifacts. 

5. Enjoy Water Sports At Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area

Located adjacent to the east side of Lincoln City is Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area , a three-mile fresh-water lake. The shallow lake is great for water sports including paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, canoeing, and water skiing. 

The area is also great for bird watching as the wetlands are wintering grounds for migrating birds. You will find osprey and eagles nests in the area.

Miles of hiking trails entice you to enjoy the natural beauty. There is also a year-round naturalist program.

6. Search For All The Birds

Birders will delight in the variety of species in the Lincoln City area. Look for western snowy plover, western sandpipers, bald eagles, osprey, and many other birds of a feather. Be careful of the western snowy plover nests along the open sandy beaches and dry mudflats.

The Lincoln County Audubon Society hosts several events. Guided walks begin at 9 a.m. and last for two hours. Birding Basics classes for adults are held at the community college. 

7. Learn About History At The Lincoln City Cultural Center

Located in the historic Delake School right along Highway 101 is the Lincoln City Cultural Center . Here you will find a variety of classes for all ages. Classes are offered in dance, music, art, literature, and theater. 

A variety of events throughout the year feature musicians, dancers, and theatrical productions.

Also housed here is the Visitor Information Center . As well as a great place for finding information about the city, this is where you can pick up a certificate of authenticity for your found glass float.

Pro Tip: Look for the Sunday Summers Market and other arts and craft celebrations hosted at the Cultural Center.

8. Explore The Tide Pools

Explore the tide pools and discover some of the amazing creatures that live in the Pacific Ocean. Look for sea anemones, sea urchins, starfish, and hermit crabs. The two areas with the most accessible tide pools are at NW 15th Street and the Inn At Spanish Head. 

The best time to explore tidepools is around low tide. Check the tide tables for the latest information. 

Pro Tip: Remember that tide pools are very delicate ecosystems. Take nothing and leave nothing behind. Remember also your beach safety.

9. Enjoy All The Wildlife And Action At Siletz Bay Wildlife Refuge

Located at the southern tip of Lincoln City, the Siletz Bay Wildlife Refuge is a 568-acre area composed of salt marsh, brackish marsh, tidal sloughs, mudflats, and forestland. Home to numerous species of birds, fish, and sea life, you can choose from activities such as hiking, crabbing, clamming, bank fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and birding. 

The Alder Island Nature Trail is a short, easy walking trail. Bring a field guide to help you identify the various species you may encounter.

Pro Tip: Be careful not to disturb the wildlife.

10. Learn To Catch Crab And/Or Dig For Clams

What great fun it is to catch or dig for your dinner! One of the best spots for crabbing and clamming is Siletz Bay. Check the Shellfish Hotline before heading out to ensure that conditions are safe for crabbing and clamming. Check the Shellfish Hotline link for a map of the best areas.

Dungeness crabs are a favorite in the Pacific Northwest. Crabbing classes are offered at Siletz Bay. Clamming courses are also offered. Bring your own equipment or rent equipment at venues such as Ace Hardware .

Pro Tip: Folks 12 years of age and older need a shellfish license. You can purchase online or at retailers in town.

11. Lace Up Your Hiking Boots

Lincoln City and its vicinity have several hiking trails ranging from easy to moderately difficult. Some trails are closed at times to protect endangered species. You will find detailed information about trails and closures here .

A local favorite is Drift Creek Falls , an easy 3.2-mile trail with a gorgeous waterfall and suspension bridge. 

Pro Tip: Drift Creek Falls is a day-use fee area. Check for pass information here . Purchase a day pass or consider an annual pass.

12. Stroll The Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy

Enjoy a morning or afternoon strolling the Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy . Wander amongst azaleas, rhododendrons, irises, geraniums, and lavender beds — many of the beautiful plants of the Pacific Northwest.

The site is open year-round and some pathways are wheelchair accessible. Pets on leashes are welcome. Many seniors and others enjoy volunteering at the site each Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Situated between Tillamook and Newport, the city was named for former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln and in 2017, became the first city in the path of totality to view a total solar eclipse. Free and open to the public—although donations are accepted to help keep things going—the 1-acre green space was a passion project of retired Lincoln City resident Constance Hansen, who took up gardening as a hobby for 20 years. Go for a relaxing stroll through the garden's pathways, lined with hundreds of rhododendrons of all shapes, colors, and sizes, and all manner of flora and fauna native to this part of Oregon, including magnolia, maple, Sitka spruce, and dogwood trees.

Lincoln City's miles of sandy beaches are its primary attraction, with kite flying, beach combing, shellfishing, whale watching, and tide pooling all being popular activities here, as well as walking along the sand and watching the waves roll in. Some hardy souls even surf. 

Roads End State Recreation Area , located at the northern edge of the city limits, has limited facilities but offers wide open beach access. Other great spots include the "D" River State Wayside , where the river and ocean meet, and Josephine Young Memorial Park , which has picnic areas, bay access, and wooded areas. The former is also a hotspot for kite flying events.

The many forests, lakes, rivers, and creeks around Lincoln City provide beautiful terrain for hiking along nature trails. Cascade Head is home to two different Nature Conservancy trails , each rich in wildlife and wildflowers, while the Drift Creek Falls trail in Siuslaw National Forest passes through lush rainforests and makes you cross a suspension bridge, where you'll be rewarded with fantastic waterfall views. For a more leisurely hike, try the Cutler City Nature trail , a one-mile track that passes through woods and wetlands, or the Hebo Lake Loop Trail , also in Siuslaw National Forest, a family-friendly, less-than-one-mile track that circles the lake.

Go Boating or Paddling on Devil's Lake

Devil's Lake provides a wealth of water recreation opportunities, from motor boating and water skiing to canoeing and kayaking. On Devil's Lake, boat launches are located near the campground on the northern side and at the East Devil's Lake day-use park. Paddlers, meanwhile, can enjoy a guided trip at Siletz Bay, a national wildlife refuge.

More than 3,000 of them are dropped in the area between mid-October and Memorial Day.

The weather can be hit or miss—I experienced the full range, from low clouds and poor visibility to stunning vistas and sunset colors. Yet, I highly recommend you visit Lincoln City. With tons of things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon, you’ll have many adventures and places to see.

Below, you’ll see what to do in Lincoln City, Oregon. If you visit, keep an eye on the forecast but understand that it’s likely to be foggy as the warmer temperatures inland draw in the clouds during the summer months.

I was told September and October is prime visiting months. So as you’re planning your trip, make sure to put these locations on your list to get the best bang for your buck!

The things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon, are numerous for a relatively small town (both in size and population). However, the coastal areas punch above their weight, especially with the Cascade Head region offering tremendous hiking. Below, you’ll find all my favorite spots when you visit Lincon City.

Before you book your adventure – What to Know about Lincoln City, Oregon

Is lincoln city worth visiting.

Most definitely! I loved my time on the coast and enjoyed the hikes and views. The things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon, will surprise you and bring you great joy and adventure! I highly recommend taking a trip to the Oregon coast.

I especially enjoyed getting outside and hiking Cascade Head and Drift Creek Falls. Both are gorgeous, and you’ll be stoked at the scenery.

Where should I stay in Lincoln City?

The beauty of Lincoln City, Oregon, is it’s a resort town, and nearly all the hotels are on the beach. This provides you epic views and unparalleled ocean access and outside access. I stayed at the Starfish Manor and freaking LOVED it!

But I’m sure you can stay anywhere and have a grand time with the things to do in Lincon City.

When is the best month to visit Lincoln City, Oregon?

While many people think summer is the best time to visit Lincoln City, fall is actually the best. This is because, in summer, the warmer inland temperatures suck in the fog, making Lincoln City foggy for a lot of the day. (It’s like this in many coastal towns.) But in the fall, cooler inland temperatures don’t create such a pull on the fog, allowing Lincoln City to show off all its glory.

How far is Lincoln City from the ocean?

Mere feet. Lincoln City is a coastal town in Oregon, about perpendicular to Salem. So for many people, you’ll be able to eat breakfast, drink coffee with ocean views, and then walk on the sand to start the day. Talk about perfection!

Can you go swimming in the ocean?

Yes, you can, but the water this far north in the Pacific Ocean can be chilly. Furthermore, air temperature also matters. If you have a warm day, swimming may be more welcoming than a cold and gloomy day. If one of the things to do in Lincon City is a polar plunge, I think it’s a great place to do it!

Are the Things to do in Lincon City expensive?

When I visited, I didn’t find it any more expensive than other coastal towns. Plus, if you do a lot of what is on this list, you won’t have any costs as they are free.

My Favorite Things to Do in Lincoln City, Oregon

Let’s dive into my favorite things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Cascade Head

The premier hike and view in the area. Cascade Head is  stunning  at sunset and gives you unparalleled coast views. If it has recently rained, be prepared for a very muddy hike. The hike winds through a dense forest before emerging into grassland with ocean views.

You’ll spend the next 30 minutes trekking up the hillside – each step unwrapping a better view than before. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can go to the top and then down to Harts Cove (check if it’s open), but I found a nice view near the top to set up my camera as the local elk watched with curiosity.

Expect about a four to five-mile hike with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain – with half of it at the end. This is number one on my things to do in Lincoln City list. Once you’re at the top, you’ll realize why.

Next to the 101, Siletz Bay is a lovely spot to stretch your legs and enjoy a little walk as you visit Lincoln City. While exploring, I saw a handful of people digging up shellfish. (Unsure what kind.) There are a few places to pull off and park around the bay.

I enjoyed strolling around here as one of the things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Visit Lincoln City’s Coast

The entire coastline of Lincoln City is a photographer’s dream. Having the ability to get an aerial view puts things into perspective. It’s full of great hotels like the Star Manor, but they all fade away when you get high enough.

I strongly suggest spending time on the beach when considering things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Devils Punch Bowl

About 20 minutes south of Lincoln City is the Devil’s Punchbowl. During low tide, visitors can enter and look around. This would be a beautiful place to photograph sunset or sunrise—a bonus if you can do it from inside.

While technically outside the city limits, it’s still a must for things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Drift Creek Falls and Suspension Bridge

Behind Cascade Head, this is the second-best place to photograph in Lincoln City. (Albeit, it’s a bit outside of Lincoln City.) Drift Creek Falls is a three-mile hike to an incredible waterfall and suspension bridge. Despite steadily raining on me for this hike, I still loved it.

The whole place is amazingly green, and the roar of the falls is wonderful. The drive from town is about 45 minutes. There are two ways in, and both are narrow, winding roads. So take your time and enjoy the views of the lush forest.

The end of the road. Well, not officially, but sort of. At Lands End, hop out of the car and start walking. You’ll have miles of coastline to the left and right, and it’s simply beautiful. Looking north will be your best bet photo-wise, as you’ll see God’s Thumb and Cascade Head.

This is a must-stop place when planning things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon.

Local Elk Herd

Keep an eye out for the local herd of Roosevelt Elk. They’re the largest of their species and love to hang around the northern edge of town. I just stumbled upon them and spent about 20 minutes watching and photographing them.

So when you visit, add this to your list of what to do in Lincoln City, Oregon.

There are several parking places (check Google Maps and then follow AllTrails ), but they all take you to this beautiful vista. It’s not more than 2.5 miles round trip, and the open space provides views of Lincoln City and the ocean.

Devils Lake

Sitting in the middle of town just off the 101, Devil’s Lake and Regatta Park are great places to enjoy a picnic lunch and have the kiddos run around. Also, check local regulations for fishing and boating here. I recommend adding this as one of your things to do in Lincoln City.

Finders Keepers at the Beach in Lincoln City

One of the most fun things about visiting Lincoln City is the city’s Finders Keepers tradition! Over 3,000 hand-blown glass floats have been hidden along the city’s coastline and the quest to find one always makes for a fun family adventure.

The glass floats are hidden along the beach spanning from Road’s End in the north, all the way south to Siletz Bay. If you spot one it’s yours for keeps! The city just asks that you register it at oregoncoast.org , so they know its been claimed. Good luck and have fun!

Given the gorgeous landscape and beach town atmosphere, you’ll find there are so many amazing things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon. We’ve broken down some of our favorite local activities into categories to help you better plan the vacation that best suits your family. No matter our itinerary, we always end up having a good time here, and hope you do too! 

Free Things to Do in Lincoln City 

1. sand point park.

Because Oregon is so beautiful, there are so many places to visit in this area that showcase the gorgeous landscape of this region of the United States. We love Sand Point Park because it’s so green and pretty, but it also is a great place to just relax and have some fun! 

This is the perfect place to visit if you’ve got children eager to play in the water. There’s a designated swimming area along the sandy beach, restrooms, as well as grills and picnic areas. It’s a wonderful place to pack a lunch and make an entire day out of your visit. 

2. Neskowin Beach

Have you ever heard of a ghost forest? If you visit Neskowin Beach at low tide, you can see tree stumps that are typically covered by the water but once were a spruce forest nearly 2,000 years ago!

Over time, the trees are becoming more and more buried by the sand, but if you can catch these hidden gems before they are gone, it’s truly a fascinating sight. Kids love discovering this hidden forest! 

You also can’t miss Proposal Rock; it’s the main attraction at this beach due to its sheer size and beauty. This is also a great place to visit if your family is interested in exploring tide pools on your coastal adventure. The pools here are full of colorful and interesting sea life to admire.

3. Cascade Head

We decided to include Cascade Head for all of our hiking readers. We love to hike as a family, and this is one of the most beautiful routes we’ve found near Lincoln City. 

This is an out-and-back hike with a full distance of 6.6 miles. Due to seasonal closures, the trail is split into lower and upper trailheads. The upper trailhead is closed from the beginning of the calendar year through mid-July, so if you want to complete the full route, make sure you plan your visit in the late summer months or fall. 

The Cascade Head trail is family-friendly and offers some of the most beautiful coastal views, including glimpses of Three Rocks and the Salmon River Estuary, along with some of the most beautiful wildflowers you’ve ever seen. You may even catch sight of an endangered species of butterfly that’s known to pop up here from time to time. 

4. God’s Thumb Hike

Hiking God’s Thumb is one of the best things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon. Another out-and-back trail, this one is nearly four and a half miles and is a moderately challenging route. If you enjoy hiking and the striking Oregon Coast scenery, you won’t want to miss the trek up this thumb-like cliff. 

We recommend hiking early in the day for optimal temperatures and also to snag a parking spot, as the make-shift parking lot is a small cul-de-sac area that fills up quickly. Keep in mind this trail does not have its own signage but is combined with The Knoll. 

You’ll follow the path toward the Knoll before continuing on to God’s Thumb through a more forested area. The trees will eventually clear as you keep hiking, and you’ll get your first peeks at God’s Thumb. 

The final stretch is considered the most challenging as the path narrows while also veering very near the cliff side. If you are hiking with small or inexperienced hikers, you may not want them to climb up to the top of God’s Thumb. The kids and I stayed at the bottom while Coltin climbed to the top. 

5. Regatta Park

A stop at Regatta Park is a great thing to do when your kids need a moment to play and burn off some energy. It’s also helpful to pair this top in combination with a visit to Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area.

We love the fun playground here, as well as the gorgeous Sitka Spruce Trees. It’s always fun to take a short walk along the nature trail that winds through the trees to admire their size and beauty. 

If you’re looking to swim, they also have a swimming area with a dock and a place to play in the sand. 

6. 15th Ave Beach Access Tide Pools 

If you’re hoping to explore some tide pools on your trip to Lincoln City but aren’t interested in hunting them down, we recommend stopping by 15th Ave Beach Access Tide Pools. These are some of the most easily accessed tide pools in the city, located at the ocean’s edge at the beach located at 15th Ave. 

If you time your visit just right, you might be able to catch one of the city’s guided tide pool experiences here, which makes your visit here all the more fun and educational. Led by a local expert, you will be able to not only view the tide pools but learn to identify the marine life and learn about them at the same time.

It’s one of the most fun things to do in Lincoln City, Or for both kids and adults alike! 

7. Devil’s Punchbowl 

Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area is a beautiful part of the coast that has a large cave you can explore and beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. It is open for day use year-round and is one of the best natural areas on the coast.

If you happen to visit this spot at high tide, the best views will be from the upper viewing area. Our kids love to see the waves crashing into the collapsed cave.

If you are visiting at a low tide, the cave’s bowl will be empty. This set-up allows people to explore the inside of the cave. This is also the best time to explore the tide pools on the beach. The sea life we find is always so fun and one of the things my kids love the most about visiting the ocean.

Devil’s Punchbowl can get busy, as it’s a very popular spot along the coast. But we definitely think it’s worth a stop! It is a great place to visit while spending time in Lincoln City or as a stop if you are going on a West Coast road trip !

D River State Recreation Site may appear to be just another Oregon beach, but in our opinion, it’s very special. The D River is the shortest river in the world, which means you can watch its entire 120-foot journey from Devil’s Lake into the majestic Pacific Ocean. 

This beach is very serene and makes for the perfect spot to take a long walk on the beach with the one you love. Keep in mind that this beach is exceptionally windy, so plan ahead for those conditions. 

It’s so windy in fact, it’s home to two of the world’s biggest kite festivals, taking place each summer and fall. Watching the kites fly while enjoying the stunning coastal landscape can make for a romantic experience in and of itself if you’re able to time your trip just right.  

9. Lincoln City Glass Center

Lincoln City Glass Center consists of a beautiful gallery where you can explore and admire gorgeous works of art, all crafted in glass. 

The center also offers visitors the chance to create their very own piece of art with local artists trained as glassblowing professionals. This is definitely not a run-of-the-mill everyday type of activity, and some would consider it one of the more weird things to do in Lincoln City, Oregon. 

But, if you’re a fan of art and are interested in how glass creations are made, a visit here can serve as a fun and memorable way to spend time with your significant other in Lincoln City. 

10. Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy

Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy is a wonderful place to visit if you’re looking for some peace and serenity while exploring Lincoln City. It’s the perfect place for a quiet and romantic stroll through some of the most gorgeous flowers, including variations of rhododendrons, azaleas, and perennials. Not to mention some breathtaking aged trees and blooming shrubs. 

Though different plants are in bloom at different points throughout the year, you’re sure to enjoy countless flowers no matter the time of your visit. 

11. Kyllos Bar & Grill 

We recommend dining at Kyllos Bar & Grill for the ultimate romantic dinner out. The restaurant is located directly on the beach and serves up delectable seafood, steaks, and burgers, along with staggering views! 

It’s noted as one of the top-rated eateries in Lincoln City, as you can enjoy your meal with ease, knowing it’s guaranteed to be a good one. We love the classy yet cozy atmosphere here. It really is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal with your favorite person. 

12. Mossy Creek Pottery

We love collecting treasures throughout our travels, and it’s always so nice to find a souvenir that is functional. It not only reminds you of a certain trip but serves a purpose and is useful. 

Mossy Creek Pottery is a wonderful and charming shop to wander through, offering unique and beautiful pottery handcrafted right in Lincoln City. From vases for flowers, bowls, plates, and mugs for everyday use, it’s a great place to find a treasure to commemorate your trip. 

13. Day Trip to Newport 

Getting out of town is always a great option when planning a romantic adventure. We love taking a coastal day trip to nearby Newport while spending time in Lincoln City. Visiting lighthouses can be very romantic, and it happens to be one of our favorite things to do in Newport, Oregon . 

Newport is home to two lighthouses, one of which is the highest point in the state. And the sandy beaches there are prime with wildlife, great for whale watching, looking for bald eagles, and agates in the sand.

Other highlights in this town include the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the world-famous chowder at Mo’s. If you’re looking for something more outdoorsy to enjoy as a couple, you can take hikes, go crabbing, fishing, or surf all year round.

14. bijou theater.

After a busy day hiking or playing at the beach, sometimes a movie is the best way to wrap up the day. We love the old-time classic feel of the Bijou Theater . Built in 1937, it has served the Lincoln City community with entertaining and fantastical cinematic escapes for several decades and is still going strong. 

15. The Pines Dine Food Truck Village 

The Pines Dine is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat while getting a real taste of the local culture. This food truck village consists of twelve different food trucks featuring everything from burgers to gyros, sushi to sandwiches, and tacos. Chances are you’re bound to find something to enjoy here. 

There’s also an indoor beverage bar that offers an assortment of beers, wines, and non-alcoholic beverage options. We consider The Pines Dine one of the best restaurants in Lincoln City .

16. Camping at Devils Lake Recreation Area

There’s nothing quite like relaxing in the night air, under the stars, when spending time away from home. There are some amazing campsites on the Oregon Coast , and Devil’s Lake Recreation Area is one of our favorite places to stay when visiting Lincoln City. 

Cabins and yurts are available for family or romantic stays here. The campground also features hot showers and flush toilets. 

Depending on which campground you end up staying at, you may be only a short walk to the lake itself. This is an amazing spot for paddling, fishing, and boating. The wildlife is beautiful, too, with lots of opportunities to spot migrating ducks and geese.

Many of Lincoln City’s best outdoor treasures aren’t quite as fun to explore during the wintertime. If ugly weather strikes turn to retail therapy at Lincoln City Outlets . This outdoor outlet mall features all of your favorite major brands, and many of them are dog-friendly, allowing your pup to join you on your shopping spree. 

But what we love most about this place is that it also showcases some amazing local shops. From home decor to apparel, jewelry, collectibles, and books, we can’t get enough of the beautiful craftsmanship and creativity on display at these local shops. 

Speaking from experience, souvenirs mean so much more when you shop locally. Have fun exploring the Lincoln City Outlets, and bring home a real treasure from your travels! 

18. Lincoln City Cultural Center

If you’re looking for something to do indoors while exploring Lincoln City during the winter, be sure to check out the PJ Chessman Gallery or the Fiber Arts Gallery at the Lincoln City Cultural Center . 

We love admiring the artwork and have found it’s a great way to engage with our kids about the different talents and creativity that each of us possesses. The artwork on display is amazing, and they even have a kids center where you can pick up kits, each crafted for an age-appropriate art project to complete later on your own.  

The motto of the Lincoln City Cultural Center is to “enrich your heart with art,” and that’s exactly what it does for this community.

19. North Lincoln County Historical Museum

The North Lincoln County Historical Museum is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon learning about the city’s history. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for an indoor activity in Lincoln City in the winter. 

The museum is dedicated to the interpretation and preservation of North Lincoln County history. The history is brought to life through the presence of artifacts on display. The artifacts span different moments in the city’s past. 

The displays feature things like Native American artifacts and photos of early automobiles. There are retro kitchen designs too. Walking through the museum’s exhibits is educational but fun, as it feels sort of like a time capsule journey. 

20. Siletz Bay Park

One of the small charms that come along with spending time along the central Oregon Coast is simply enjoying the sights and sounds of the atmosphere. We’ve made stops in countless parks throughout our travels to just take in the view and see what we could discover. 

Siletz Bay Park in Lincoln City is a wonderful place to do just that. The park itself isn’t anything to write home about; it’s relatively small, but it has a cute gazebo and picnic tables if you plan to pack a lunch along. 

If you’re traveling with little ones, we recommend heading down to the beach area to let them explore. This is a great spot to beach comb or even dig for clams in the mudflats. 

During low tide, purple varnish clams and soft shell clams can be found in this area. You will have to dig about 14 inches into the sand to find them, but kids will love the process!

If you do plan to try your hand at clamming, be sure to have the appropriate gear . Everyone should have gloves, a shovel, and a bucket or clam bag. Also, keep in mind that anyone over 12 should have a shellfish license.

21. Crabbing

One of our favorite things to do when we visit the Oregon Coast is to go crabbing. My kids always get so excited when we pull a full crab pot up! They love catching enough for a tasty crab dinner.

Siletz Bay is one of the best places to go, crabbing in Lincoln City, even during the winter time. Be sure to check the tides when planning to go crabbing. Speaking from experience, timing is everything. If you want the best chance to catch crab, we recommend trying it during high or low tide. This is when the crabs are most active and aren’t being moved around as much by the shifting water. 

You can crab from the shore at Siletz Bay or from a boat. There are places to rent crabbing gear in Lincoln City. Or you can purchase traps and other crabbing essentials . This might be a good idea if you plan to go crabbing a lot throughout your Oregon Coast adventure.

We love Lincoln City and definitely think it’s worth a stop while visiting the Oregon Coast . It’s one of the most convenient coastal cities to visit because it’s relatively close to the Portland metro area. 

Lincoln City has a few memorable characteristics that keep families coming back to its sandy shores and charming town streets. Known for its perfect kite-flying weather, fliers from all over love to catch the winds in Lincoln City. The town is also known for attracting sweet tooths with a taste for saltwater taffy! 

Yes, swimming is one of the most fun family activities visitors can enjoy in Lincoln City. Devil’s Lake is one of the best spots for swimming. Siletz Bay and Regatta Park also offer other places to swim. 

Lincoln City is only a short drive, about 25 minutes away from Newport Beach, Oregon. Because these two lovely towns are so close together, if your time permits, we definitely recommend spending time in both places. They really give you a taste of what the Oregon Coast is all about!

Winter at the Oregon Coast: 5 Wow Reasons to Visit Lincoln City

Lincoln City , on Oregon’s scenic central coast, is a popular place in the summer with food and wine events, kite festivals, and a two-week-long music festival. Families come away with fond memories of beachcombing, roasting marshmallows over a bonfire, and hiking the woodsy trails.

But what I recently found out is that Lincoln City is an exciting place to go in the winter, as well. Sometimes temperatures are milder than in inland cities. If you don’t like the weather, wait a bit. It will change.

The weather was warm the two days I was there recently, and walking the beach searching for glass floats and agates was the thing to do. Waves crashed as surfers rode into the sandy beach. No matter the weather, there are amazing things to do during an Oregon Coast winter visit. Here are my top 5 wow reasons to visit Lincoln City during the winter.

Storm Watching in Lincoln City

Let’s say it’s not so mild out. A storm is brewing. Waves are high, and winds keep you off the beach. It’s then that a cozy room in one of Lincoln City’s waterfront hotels or condos is ideal. To make it better, select one with a fireplace.

If you want to venture out, take a drive, and stop to view the wave action. The D River Wayside and Roads End State Park are popular destinations. Stop for lunch with a view at oceanfront restaurants like Fathoms at Inn at Spanish Head or Kyllo’s Seafood and Grill .

Storm-watching is romantic and best viewed at a distance from your cozy hotel room. When the storms are at their peak, winds over 100 miles per hour and waves towering 30 feet or more drive spectacular walls of water onto the beach and against the bluffs. Don’t be surprised if the electricity goes out temporarily. It’s part of the thrill of winter storm watching.

And when it calms down, you’ll find interesting things on the beach—huge logs and driftwood appear where only sand existed before. Take a walk and enjoy the calm after the storm.

Whale Watching in Lincoln City

You’ll see the signs, “ Whale Watching Spoken Here .” Whale watch docents help visitors spot the whales out in the ocean. Grey whales migrate each year—about 12,000 miles round-trip—from northern waters off Alaska to the Gulf of California in Mexico and back.

Good spots in Lincoln City for spotting whales are Cascade Head, the Road’s End State Park, the bank at Northwest 21st Street, the dining room or room balconies at the Inn at Spanish Head, the cliff at SW 40th St, or Boiler Bay (about 9 miles south of Lincoln City).

You can connect with whale watch docents in the cocktail lounge of the Inn at Spanish Head. Enjoy a cocktail after seeing a pod of whales from this excellent (and warm) vantage point.

Hunting for Art Glass Floats in Lincoln City

One doesn’t think of sparkling, hand-blown glass as a coastal asset, but places like Lincoln City are a destination for artists, collectors, and admirers of glass art.

One of the most fun and rewarding Lincoln City events begins in October each year when hundreds of glass floats are hidden on Lincoln City beaches. The event runs through Memorial Day.

Finders Keepers takes place with 3,000 local hand-crafted glass floats along the 7-1/2 miles of public beach in Lincoln City, from the Roads End area to the Cutler City area. It’s “finders keepers” for those who walk the beach and find a beautiful float. The floats are hidden above the tide line and below the beach embankment, with “float drops” happening throughout the Finders Keepers season.

Savoring the Sea Food in Lincoln City

Lincoln City has no dock, so local restaurateurs head to places like Newport to meet the fishing boats. You’ll enjoy clams, oysters, crab, salmon, and halibut from up and down the coast.

One evening I enjoyed dining at Fathoms at Inn at Spanish Head . We had grilled salmon and halibut, but what caught my eye on the menu was a seafood specialty entrée I had never seen before… Coastal Seafood Mac-n-Cheese made with Dungeness crab and Oregon pink shrimp baked in a creamy three‐cheese sauce. It sounded great for a wintery evening.

Restaurants like Fathoms, Kyllo’s Seafood and Grill , and The Bay House feature excellent seafood.

And if you don’t get enough while there, you can stop by Barnacle Bill’s Seafood Market on your way home. They are known for their smoked salmon but always have a range of fresh seafood to purchase.

Want to indulge in more seafood? Nearby Newport has an annual Seafood and Wine Festival in February. Enjoy wine, seafood, and arts and crafts.

Shopping ‘Til You Drop in Lincoln City

I’m not big on malls. I much prefer small specialty stores and boutiques. But Lincoln City has one of the best outlet malls I’ve encountered. You can pack light for a winter visit because you can gear up with coastal clothing and supplies from Columbia Sportswear, North Face, and Pendleton at the outlet mall. It’s great for home goods, too.

My favorite thing to do while in Lincoln City is to visit the art glass studios in Lincoln City . When I visited the Taft Historic District of Lincoln City, I was treated to a feast for the eyes.

The Jennifer Sears studio was making glass floats for the Finders Keepers event. At the studio, you can watch glass being blown or sign up for a lesson and learn the art of glass blowing. And, of course, you can purchase a beautiful glasswork of art to take home with you.

When You Go to Lincoln City

Lincoln City is one of the larger towns on the Oregon Coast . Located west of the capital city of  Salem , Lincoln City is easily accessible from Portland, Oregon, and the central Willamette Valley.

Lincoln City has a variety of hotels and a casino/entertainment venue, Chinook Winds . There is always something to do in Lincoln City year-round. There is a kite festival, culinary classes, and opportunities for crabbing and fishing. There are beaches to walk and trails to hike. But consider a winter visit. The accommodation prices are low, and the crowds have disappeared.

Last but not least, know that Lincoln City is very dog friendly . My coonhound Cinnamon and I had a marvelous time at the dog-friendly luxe Looking Glass Inn on Siletz Bay .

5 Of The Best Hiking Trails Near Lincoln City To Explore

Oregon is lucky to have a scenic coastline, rugged mountains, deep gorges, and incredible waterfalls to explore. Some of Oregon's best hiking is done along the shores of the Oregon coast and in Oregon's Coastal Mountain range. Here are five Lincoln City hikes, and hikes in the general area you won't want to miss.

Lincoln City Hikes You Will Love

1. cascade head.

Cascade Head is one of my personal favorite trails. The trail isn't too difficult for children, but it's not boring for adults either. This trail features some of the most beautiful rainforest in the Pacific Northwest, and the trail ends at a high meadow overlooking the ocean.

There are three trailheads that make their way to the meadow overlooking the ocean and the mouth of the Salmon River. You can take a 4.2 mile hike on the Lower Nature Conservancy Trail (a 1200 foot gain in elevation), or take an easy one mile hike that gains 160 feet in elevation on the Upper Trail to Cascade Head. There’s also a trail from Hart’s Cove which is a 5.4 mile hike over 900 feet of elevation.

If you’re planning on hiking this trail in the rain (or any trail), plan to keep an extra pair of socks and dry pair of shoes in your car for when you return from your hike. Rain soaked grass and bushes along the trail will quickly soak through your shoes and socks as well as the bottom of your pants if you’re not wearing something waterproof. 2. Drift Creek Falls

If you haven't hiked to Drift Creek Falls in the coast range, you're missing out. The coolest part about this hike is the impressive 240 foot long suspension bridge spanning Drift Creek and overlooking the falls.

3. Salishan Spit Trail

The Salishan Spit Trail is a scenic 5.8 mile out and back trail near Gleneden Beach. Bird and wildlife watching is a popular activity here. Most of the trail has a remote feel even though it's within easy reach of beachfront homes. You'll have great views of the bay and wildlife refuge on this hike. Get more trail info here.

4. Alder Island Nature Trail

This nature trail is an easy .9 mile loop that features a river and is good for all skill levels. If you're looking for an easy walk and an escape into nature, this is it. Get more trail info here.

5. Cutler Wetlands Open Space Loop

If you want a place to forest bathe without having to hike deep into Oregon's lush rainforests, the Cutler Wetlands Open Space Loop is the perfect place. This trail is a .6 mile loop that takes you into a forest setting and is great for bird watching. Get more trail info here.

Between riverside beaches, good restaurants, beautiful trails and one incredible waterfall , Oregon City has more than enough to fill your cup.

Those in the Portland area looking for a quick day trip – say, something far enough to be removed but close enough to be convenient – should look no further than the historic city at the end of the Oregon Trail.

Popularly lauded as the first incorporated U.S. city west of the Rocky Mountains (though Mayor Denyse McGriff will tell you it was the first west of the Missouri River ), the town sits at the intersection of the Willamette and Clackamas rivers with a small, historic downtown near the amazing Willamette Falls and a more sprawling section of town on the bluff above the Willamette River .

While there’s definitely a small-town vibe, its proximity to Portland is clear, especially in the restaurant scene. This is a place where you can find the offshoot of Gabriel Rucker’s famed Canard , and at least one cafe that stocks beans from Deadstock Coffee . That said, you’re more likely to see people populating beloved establishments like Mike’s Drive-In and Ranee’s on Main, where the food is decidedly unfussy.

I have long loved spending the day in Oregon City, taking any opportunity to go there. For years, I took my car to a mechanic in town, often lingering long after the work was done.

This spring, when the sun emerged and the flowers began to bloom, I plotted my return: a daylong exploration of old favorites and new spots around town. If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a travel reporter, it’s that there are always new things to discover.

BREAKFAST AND A WALK

The best place to start your day downtown is Black Ink Coffee , a cafe on the southern end of the historic downtown that shares space with White Rabbit Gifts. Portland coffee snobs will be at home here with beans from Deadstock, Proud Mary and Stumptown. On a sunny Thursday morning, I sipped a macchiato at a table with vague “Alice in Wonderland” markings, then slipped out into the beautiful day.

While this part of Oregon City seems designed for walking, those embarking on foot will have to contend with parking: Metered spots downtown have two-hour limits, forcing visitors to return and move their cars. There are a few four-hour and eight-hour spots, as well as one pay lot, but I usually just surrender and organize my day around the meter.

Not far from Black Ink Coffee is the famed Oregon City Municipal Elevator , a 130-foot free public elevator that takes pedestrians up to the bluff over town (a charming stairway to the top is also available). The elevator opened in 1955, replacing an old hydraulic model that forced people to cross a 35-foot catwalk over the railroad tracks. All this I learned at the top, where a cheerful worker sat at a desk offering information to curious passersby.

The city continues at the top of the elevator, with more shops and restaurants, as well as historic buildings and neighborhoods. A few blocks over, I found The Hive Social , a hip, modern restaurant that serves food all day. In a cozy booth, I sidestepped the pricey Benedicts for an order of the Just Avo Toast and over-easy eggs, with a (surprisingly tall) glass of grapefruit juice that came out to about $20 – good fuel for a morning walk.

The elevator gives access not only to the upper part of town, but also the McLoughlin Promenade , a half-mile pathway that runs along the edge of the bluff, past beautiful gardens and great views. The promenade comes alive in the spring, with blooming flowers, blue skies and lots of green space to enjoy. For now, this is also the best place outside of a boat to get a look at Willamette Falls , which since time immemorial has been a place for fishing and communal gathering.

As walkers on the promenade can see, Willamette Falls is still surrounded by several old paper mill buildings and hydroelectric powerhouses, some of which are active and some of which are actively being torn down. On the Oregon City side of the river, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is slowly demolishing those buildings to make room for its tumwata village project. On the other side, the Willamette Falls Inter-Tribal Public Access Project is working on a vision of its own . Both projects promise new, beautiful community spaces, but are expected to take years to complete.

At the end of the McLoughlin Promenade, I crossed a pedestrian bridge over Oregon 99E and walked up to the main Willamette Falls viewpoint on the side of the highway. The view here doesn’t come close to what you’d get on the river, but it’s still a pretty good look.

Across the street, I popped into the Museum of the Oregon Territory , a small museum run by the Clackamas County Historical Society that had just opened for the day. The $8 admission gave me a self-guided tour of the exhibits, which run from Indigenous history through the industrial era into modern times. This is a nice way to dip your toes into local history; those looking for a more immersive experience can visit the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center on the other side of town, with its historic re-enactors, crafts, games and tours.

WILDFLOWERS AND RIVERSIDES

Back along the promenade, down the elevator and once again downtown, I searched for something to eat. I’ve lunched a lot in Oregon City over the years and have settled on a few favorites: the lefse wraps at Ingrid’s Scandinavian Food , the perfectly-portioned lunch menu at Pho Thi , and the creative, upscale options at Canard .

On this trip, I decided to check out the Corner 14 food carts , across the street from Oregon City Brewing on the north end of downtown. After browsing carts offering Thai, burgers, Mexican and Russian peroshki, I settled on a place called Veggie Bowl, where I devoured a box of rice, quinoa, veggies and nori, flavored with an addictive spicy sauce for a reasonable $11. Fueled up once again, I set off for an afternoon exploring the outdoor opportunities around town.

Oregon City has a number of good hiking areas, including Newell Creek Canyon Nature Park , which opened in 2021 with more than four miles of forested trails, and Canemah Bluff Nature Park , a small park with river views.

One of my favorite outdoor destinations here is the Camassia Natural Area , a 26-acre nature preserve just across the Willamette River in West Linn. Camassia is known for its beautiful spring wildflower blooms, which on this day I couldn’t resist. A short loop trail took me through a forest blooming with trillium and Oregon grape, and into meadows where purple camas lilies and pink sea blush flowers were popping. Nestled into a local neighborhood, the preserve has limited parking, so be respectful of neighbors when finding a spot. (Alternately, you can make the one-mile walk from downtown Oregon City, which is along sidewalks most of the way.)

After the flowers, I drove a few minutes deeper into West Linn to Maddax Woods , a seven-acre park along the Willamette River. Despite what the name suggests, the highlight here is a riverside viewing platform that looks out to Goat Island (another misnomer, as the resident animals are roosting herons). A wooded trail leads a short way uphill and enters Burnside Park , a neighborhood forest that gives access to a shaded river beach. I could have spent the rest of the afternoon on the sand, where the scenery was peaceful despite the rumble of motors from a boat launch across the water. Instead, I marked it down for another time and continued on my journey.

Somehow hungry again, I stopped at the Mi Famiglia pizzeria in downtown Oregon City, where I downed half a $17 margherita pie, cooked speedily in the wood-fired oven. The day had grown warm, and I found the meal a necessary break from both the sun and from walking. Of course, that didn’t mean I was done exploring.

After visiting the banks of the Willamette River, I was interested to see what the Clackamas River parks had to offer. Back in my car, I drove to the north side of town where I found River Access Park , part of the Clackamas River Trail . Between the noise of nearby Interstate 205 and the disappointingly small river access points, this was no peaceful getaway (though the sunny, accessible picnic areas were tempting). The paved trail is better suited for cycling than walking, and my feet soon tired of the hard surface. I had hoped to spend more time by the Clackamas, but after a quick two-mile out-and-back walk, I had seen enough.

With evening descending and my to-do list complete, I searched for one final stop to put a cherry on the top of my Oregon City day trip. The day before my trip, a colleague who lives in the area gave me a great tip: Mike’s Drive-In , a local burger chain with a spot in the heart of Oregon City, offers soft serve ice cream cones for $1.49. There, I ordered a vanilla-strawberry swirl and grabbed a seat outside, chilled by both the ice cream and the cooling day.

It might have been a little early in the season for days filled with riverside beaches and ice cream cones, but I felt certain this town would soon be buzzing with activity, the community’s many wonderful destinations well enjoyed.
