FAQs about Japan Tours
Cash or credit card in japan.
Used to be a cash-based society, Japan now gradually accept other payment methods like credit and debit cards, especially in big cities. They are accepted by most hotels, large restaurants and stores. However, when visiting rural areas, tourist sights and small shops, cash is the most common payment method. It is also advisable to keep coins at hand if you use buses and trams or lockers.
Is the tap water in Japan clean to drink?
Tap water is drinkable in Japan since the country owns a reliable water infrastructure and well-maintained purification facilities. You can even buy bottled Tokyo tap water for around 100 yen in Ueno Park or Tokyo Station. However, if you have a problem with the stomach, it’s better to use bottled water for safety.
What is Japan’s preferred currency?
The Japanese currency is the yen and it is accepted for all payments in Japan. Paper money comes in 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen denominations, while coins are denominated in 1 yen, 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen, 100 yen and 500 yen. Foreign currencies are only accepted at major international airports. If you look for currency exchange, find a handful of licensed money changers at international airports or large hotels and banks. All tourists are recommended to change for yen before coming into Japan and cash is handy since ATM withdrawal might not work with cards issued outside of Japan.
Best Japan SIM card to buy
The most practical SIM card for tourists to Japan is the Mobal Japan Unlimited SIM, not the cheapest but the only provider with full English support and voice calling. Other popular options on the ground are prepaid U-mobile, OCN and Rakuten SIMs. If you want to save time and effort, you can easily order a SIM online in advance and take it from the pick-up points in the cities. Another way is buying a SIM card from the airport’s sales points, which is convenient but a little pricey. If you’ve missed both options, pay a visit to Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera for a wide range of providers.
Is the food in Japan safe and clean?
As one of the cleanest countries in the world, the level of care and hygiene put into food in Japan is top-notch as well. You can safely enjoy local food in a variety of eateries and restaurants. The most popular delicacies are sushi, sashimi, tempura, udon, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, etc. Though these specialities are followed extremely strict food preparation standards by skilled chefs, it’s better to avoid eating raw food if you have problem adjusting while travelling overseas.
Is tipping mandatory in Japan?
Tipping generally isn't a part of the culture in Japan and if you’re doing it the wrong way, it could come across as rude. As Japanese people respect the dignity and hard work, they will not be expecting a tip. You can check the bill at the hotels and restaurants to see if there is a service charge. If you don’t see, it's still not suggested you tip since leaving a tip can insinuate that the person you're tipping does not earn a fair wage. There are only a few times that you need to give a tip, such as your tour guide provides an excellent tour beyond your expectations, you can try to tip them. And the appropriate way is putting the tip in a nice envelope, seal it, and give it with both hands and a slight bow.
Which destinations should I visit in Japan?
There is a handful of enchanting tourist attractions throughout the islands of Japan that you should add on your next itinerary trip in Japan. While the capital city Tokyo is a great destination to explore the ancient traditions and modern life co-existing in harmony, the neighbouring towns as Hakone and Kamakura are ideal to explore the country’s history and natural beauty. Typically, a trip to see from afar or conquer the iconic Fuji Mount is a must to any travellers to Japan. If you’re into the cultural diversity, don’t miss out the world heritage sites in the former capital cities like Kyoto and Nara. A relaxing beach holiday on the pristine white shores of Okinawa is surely an excellent option for families with kids and honeymooners.
What is the best time to visit Japan?
Japan is a large archipelago extended in latitude with diverse climates from north to south: cold in the north, temperate in the central regions, and almost tropical on the southern islands. As each season in Japan has its charm and weather varies a lot from place to place across the country, Japan is an incredible year-round destination for all travellers. However, if you need an answer for the best time to visit Japan, it’s generally recommended between March and May, or October and November. If you don’t care much about the weather and the crowds of tourists around, let’s consider your interests and what each season can bring to your holiday. Spring in Japan (mid-March to May) is famous for the pink hues of cherry blossoms and the Golden Week. Summer in Japan (June to mid-September) is filled with colourful festivals but it’s also the hottest time of year with high chances of rains and typhoons. Fall (mid-September to early December ) is the magical season in Japan with brilliant autumn colours and pleasant temperatures, while winter (December to mid-March) is perfect for enjoying onsen and skiing.
How long do I need to explore Japan?
Japan has so many things to offer. Visitors who are planning their Japan trip should decide a travel itinerary according to the length of your stay. Generally speaking, a holiday in Japan for 2 weeks or longer is usually recommended for those wanting to experience all the best of this Asian country. If your trip is short for a maximum of 5 days, it’s better to make the most of your vacation in one big city as the travel time to another might take much time. The ideal time budget is from 7 to 10 days, which wouldn’t take you all around but provide the best highlights of the nation.
Where should I visit in Japan on my 1st-time tour routes?
From north to south, Japan comprises five main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, each of which has different geographical features and a variety of travel experiences. These main islands are incredibly easy to get across and around by the country’s efficient public transport: the shinkansen (bullet train) network from Hokkaido to the southern tip of Kyushu, and the convenient airlines in big cities. If you’re first-time visitors to Japan wanting to catch a glimpse of this mesmerizing country, make sure to add some of the best destinations on your travel itinerary, including the vibrant capital city Tokyo, the cultural capital Kyoto, Mount Fuji, the foodie’s heaven Osaka, and a host of famed attractions in Hakone and Hiroshima as well.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden hosts the leaders of Japan and the Philippines this week to boost economic and defense ties as the allies seek to offset China's growing might and manage risks ranging from North Korea to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
Biden's bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday will bring an upgrade in defense ties with Japan, Washington's cornerstone ally in the Indo-Pacific region and an increasingly important global partner.
War in Israel and Gaza
Kishida, beleaguered at home, will be greeted in the United States with great fanfare, with Japanese flags already festooning Washington lampposts and a glittering White House dinner with some 200 guests.
On Thursday, he will become only the second Japanese leader to address a joint meeting of Congress after his assassinated predecessor, Shinzo Abe, gave a speech in 2015.
Political analysts say the visit is a chance for Kishida to boost dire domestic popularity ratings ahead of a September leadership contest in his ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The U.S. will hail Japan as a vital regional and global ally and Kishida will be able to bask in praise for defense reforms that have taken Japan further from its post-war pacifism.
White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday the three countries had "increasingly convergent strategic objectives, interests and frankly concerns in areas like the South China Sea."
"We're going to look to find ways to continue to deepen the collaboration with our closest partners again to ensure a free open, prosperous secure Indo-Pacific," Kirby said.
Overshadowing the visit is a controversy over the planned $15 billion acquisition of American steel maker U.S. Steel by Japan's Nippon Steel, a deal some say is "on life support" after criticism by Biden and Donald Trump, his rival in November's U.S. election.
Also looming are Japanese concerns that in any second Trump term he might seek a deal with China that could destabilize the region.
SUPPORTING THE PHILIPPINES
On Thursday, Biden holds a bilateral meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos, whom he welcomed in Washington just last year, before the two join Kishida for a trilateral summit expected to focus on countering Chinese pressure on the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea.
"Close cooperation between Japan, the U.S., and the Philippines is crucial for a free and open order based on the rule of law and for economic prosperity in the region," Kishida said on Friday.
U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel said on Monday China was constantly using "coercion" and pressure on countries including Japan and the Philippines, and his counterpart, Japan's ambassador to the U.S., Shigeo Yamada, said the overall approach to Beijing would be among the issues discussed.
Yamada told the same think tank event Kishida would emphasize to the U.S. Congress that Japan is ready to work collaboratively on global issues. He said Japan would continue to support Ukraine's efforts to defend itself and keep its economy going - another issue the leaders could discuss.
U.S.-JAPAN MILITARY COORDINATION
With concerns that Russia's Ukraine invasion might embolden Beijing to move against Taiwan, a strategic self-ruled island that produces the world's most advanced semiconductors, the leaders are expected to discuss plans to upgrade the U.S. military command structure in Japan to make it better able to work with Japanese forces in a crisis.
Biden and Kishida are also expected to announce steps to allow more joint development of military and defense equipment, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said last week.
Under Kishida, Japan has pledged to double defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product, which could make it the world's third-biggest military spender. Its plans include acquiring hundreds of cruise missiles that can strike targets 1,000 km (620 miles) away.
Japan has also become important to the U.S. as a potential production base for munitions, including Patriot PAC3 anti-missile systems that will be re-exported to Ukraine, and for its shipyards.
The Biden-Kishida summit is expected to address Japan's future involvement in the three-way AUKUS defense pact between Australia, Britain and the United States, but officials and experts say obstacles remain given a need for Japan to introduce better cyber defenses and stricter rules for guarding secrets.
Britain, the United States and Australia said in a joint statement on Monday they are considering working with Japan on advanced capability projects in AUKUS and Britain said talks between the partners and other nations, including Japan, would start this year.
Japan last year delivered air defense radars to the Philippines and is negotiating a reciprocal-access agreement that would make it easier for Japanese troops to train there.
U.S. officials emphasize interactions with the Philippines will cover more than defense, with "consequential" outcomes in energy and economic security.
"It's a really important moment for us to hear from the Philippines about what kinds of support may be most useful," a senior U.S. administration official told Reuters.
Amid the Nippon Steel controversy, U.S. officials aim to highlight other Japanese investment in the U.S. Deals in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, aviation and construction will contribute "to good-paying, strong American jobs," the U.S. official said.
Space is another focus, with Japan hoping to land its first astronaut on the moon with the U.S. Artemis project that envisages returning humans there by 2026, as competition with Russia and China intensifies.

Four nations combine in maritime first

Australia, Japan, the Philippines and the United States conducted the first multilateral maritime cooperative activity on April 7, demonstrating a collective commitment to promote and strengthen regional and international support for an open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
The naval vessels and aircraft included the Philippine Navy's BRP Antonio Luna with AW159 Wildcat ASW helicopter, and BRP Valentin Diaz (PS177); the USS Mobile and a P-8A Poseidon from the United States Navy; Royal Australian Navy Anzac-class frigate HMAS Warramunga and a RAAF P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft; and JS Akebono from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces.
Commanding Officer HMAS Warramunga Commander Jennifer Graham said it was an honour to participate in the first multilateral maritime cooperative activity within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone.
“We thoroughly enjoyed Philippine hospitality and activities while alongside at Puerto Princesa as part of our regional presence deployment, including cultural exchanges, ship tour and an official function, plus a goodwill match of soccer and basketball with the Philippine Navy at Naval Station Apolinario,” Commander Graham said.
“The maritime cooperative activity at sea included officer-of-the-watch manoeuvres, tactical manoeuvring and anti-submarine warfare exercises involving air assets from all four participants.
“These activities enhance interoperability and foster closer cooperation between the Australian Defence Force, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United States Navy.
“Such activities directly contribute to the security and stability of the region and build mutual understanding and interoperability between nations and our armed forces.”
The RAAF P-8A crew worked with the AFP in international airspace, and 11 Squadron Detachment Commander Squadron Leader Tristan Hull said the crew found it beneficial to collaborate in consolidating maritime domain awareness procedures.
“We were very impressed with the capability, professionalism and support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines elements involved in the planning and execution of the activity,” Squadron Leader Hull said.
“By training together, we can build upon shared tactics, techniques and procedures to enhance interoperability and readiness to respond to shared security challenges.
“11 Squadron aviators welcomed senior Philippines colleagues during observation flights, which will greatly enhance our ability to operate seamlessly in the future.”
The activity underlined all four nations’ commitment to exercising freedom of navigation and overflight consistent with international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
