Every time someone asks about my trip to Indonesia, I can’t help but highlight the incredible orangutan experience we had in Borneo, all thanks to Mickey. It was absolutely extraordinary! What we witnessed there was truly indescribable—something so unique that words can hardly capture it. The breathtaking nature and wildlife alone would have made the trip unforgettable, but Mickey’s guidance took it to another level. He went above and beyond to teach us about the orangutans and the wonders of the jungle, making the entire experience even more spectacular. If I ever get the chance to return, i wouldn’t hesitate for a second!

A Divine Place to Be

"As I sit, my back leaning against a damp, moss-covered tree trunk, my eyes sweeping the canopy above, my ears straining to catch the crack of a distant branch that betrays an orangutan moving to the treetops, I think about how we humans search for God. The tropical rainforest is the most complex thing an ordinary human can experience on this planet. A walk in the rainforest is a walk into the mind of God.”

What the Trip is Like

The trip is Level 2+, Easy to Moderate , according to our trip grading system. For your own enjoyment, we recommend you make a special effort to be in good physical condition. We've crafted an active expedition, with nature walks and light hikes of two to five hours on several days, in hot and humid climate, and over a variety of terrain including forest trails, cave passages, and wooden canopy walks and boardwalks.

The terrain is relatively flat but the forest floor can be slippery and uneven (especially with tree roots!), and the trails in the Danum Valley include hills. We also explore Borneo's jungles and river wetlands by speedboats and longboats. Our explorations are timed with wildlife activity, so dawn, dusk and nighttime nature excurisons are a highlight of the trip, but you will need to be prepared for long days.

Client Testimonials

"What a wonderful combination of thoughtful planning and outstanding leadership. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Wong at the sun bear rehab center and the opportunity to plant trees."

Bakersfield, CA

"Many aspects of this trip were magical, especially the time in the Danum valley and the river based lodge. The wildlife is wonderful and the guides very knowledgeable. It is a fragile corner of the world and well worth seeing"

New York, NY

"Dean has a superlative and encyclopaedic knowledge that he shared with us, a gifted guide and true naturalist—the trip was full of marvels of nature and cultural sharing."

Kailua-Kona, HI

"A unique experience—just a wonderful opportunity to see a beautiful part of the world."

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Destinations: Kota Kinabalu District, Sukau, Sandakan, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Labuk Bay Proboscis Mo... +1 more

Destinations: Penang, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Ipoh

Selamat Datang: welcome to Kuala Lumpur! Upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), you will be met by your driver and transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in the heart of Kuala Lumpur (or KL, as it’s commonly known). As the capital of Malaysia, the colourful cultural hub is the largest city in the country, with dizzying high-rise buildings, glitzy shopping malls and a multitude of local and international cuisines. The city is defined by its 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest twin buildings in the world, and home to the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia, the Sri Mahamariamman.

Later this afternoon, set off on a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur, before sitting down for a welcome cocktail and dinner.

Today, enjoy breakfast at your hotel before travelling to Malacca, a former colonial outpost and a true melting pot of cultures and influences. Spend a full day exploring the city’s remarkable history and its most significant buildings. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the ruins of St. Paul’s Church and A Famosa, the remains of a Portuguese fortress and the earliest surviving example of European architecture in Asia. Learn about the Chinese influences here with a visit to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, dedicated to the Buddhist deity of mercy, Guan Yin. Not far from the temple is Jonker Street, brimming with antique shops that recall more than 300 years of Malacca’s fusion of influences.

After returning to KL, the rest of the evening is spent at your leisure.

This morning, explore the hidden alleys and shops of Kuala Lumpur, trying traditional street food along the way. Walk the old streets of KL, exploring beyond the tall buildings with their luxe exteriors, and get to know the Malaysian way of life and the city’s history from a local perspective. Return to your hotel to freshen up, before your transfer to the airport for your flight to Sandakan in Borneo.

Welcome to Sandakan, the gateway to Borneo’s wildlife. The city was once the capital of British-administered North Borneo and today is a busy port on the east coast of Sabah, East Malaysia. This port city is also a culinary paradise with amazing seafood and local delicacies unique to the cultural mix of people who have settled here over the centuries.

Enjoy the evening at your leisure as you settle into your hotel.

After breakfast, set off to enjoy a full day among nature. Venture to the centre of the Labuk Bay mangrove forest situated on the coast of Sandakan, and get up close and personal with some unique primates. The Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is home to three families of the endangered species, who live harmoniously with other species such as the silver leaf monkey, pig-tailed macaque, otters and kingfishers.

After lunch, visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre and learn about the native flora and fauna. Take a stroll over the suspension bridge and finish with the only Canopy Walk (147 metres long) in Sandakan. Your guide will highlight the varied birdlife and the vast diversity of flora that is endemic to this region. Then, return to your hotel for a restful sleep.

Today, the first stop is the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC). Get up close and witness these playful creatures in their natural habitat as your naturalist guide gives you an understanding of the plight of orangutans in today’s world, and the initiatives the rehabilitation centre has in place to ensure their ongoing survival and successful release back into the wild.

Afterwards, take a short walk to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). Founded in 2008, this wildlife conservation centre and research facility aims to improve the welfare and rehabilitation of the Malayan sun bear, a reclusive bear species standing just 70 centimetres tall. It also works to educate about the plight of sun bears and the importance of working to conserve this highly endangered species.

Take a two-hour journey to Sukau for lunch and check-in at the Bilit Rainforest Lodge. Embark on an afternoon river cruise to Menanggul River in search of wildlife and birds, before retiring to your accommodation.

Rise early to the calls of gibbons and hornbills before embarking on an unforgettable morning cruise to observe the area’s wildlife while watching the sun rise. Cruise to the nearby Pitas Oxbow Lake to explore the area and admire the natural surroundings. Return to the lodge for breakfast where you will spend the rest of the morning.

After lunch, you will be free to enjoy an afternoon at your leisure relaxing on the sun deck, exploring the area or enjoying the view, before meeting early evening for another river cruise along the Kinabatangan River. Return to the lodge for dinner.

After enjoying your breakfast, return to Sandakan to be transferred to the airport for the flight to Kota Kinabalu. This bustling waterfront city is surrounded by off-shore coral islands, forest-covered hills, scenic rivers and, of course, Mt. Kinabalu – the highest peak in Southeast Asia.

Settle into your room, and spend the rest of the evening at your leisure before indulging in a buffet dinner at the hotel.

Enjoy a full day at your leisure in beautiful Kota Kinabalu. Wander a short distance from your hotel and explore parklands, take a stroll along the relaxing waterfront, or shop at one of the many nearby shopping malls. Marvel at the ornate mosque or immerse yourself in Sabahan culture at the Muzium Sabah, full of pottery and natural history.

Reconvene for a sumptuous afternoon tea at the hotel’s Deco Cafe.

After breakfast, say goodbye to the beautiful Kota Kinabalu and reminisce on the time spent in Malaysia and Borneo. Your private transfer will bring you to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) for your flight home.

Experience wild Borneo

Responsible, sustainable private tours.

Our Adventure Tour packages have been carefully designed to build an awareness of ecotourism while taking safety and impact on the environment within Tanjung Puting National Park and wider Borneo into consideration.

We have spent most of our life in the deep jungle and rivers of Borneo and we grew up in the fields learning the skills to be wildlife and culture tour guides. We are also supported by the impressive and solid background of our families who have a deep knowledge of the land.

Build your tour

Wildlife is unpredictable, therefore unlike other tours within the region we don’t have a strict day by day itinerary. Instead, we offer you the opportunity of experiences and build your itinerary during the tour to make the most of the season, and most importantly the movements of the orangutans. Select from the experiences below, or let us know what you want to explore and we will tailor your tour around these!

Tanjung Puting National Park jungle trek

Jungle trek in Tanjung Puting National Park

Trek through the thick of the jungle following the winding trails led by our knowledgeable tour guides. Learn about the native fauna and flora, traditional medicines and history of the land all while keeping an eye out for wild orangutans. Immerse yourself in 360º jungle sounds as you weave your way through with endless photo opportunities. This is your chance to get off the beaten track and absorb the beauty of this stunning corner of the world.

Night jungle photography tour

Now this is an experience not to miss. Be guided by a local ranger and our tour guides through the jungle with only a head torch to lead the way. As the nocturnal creatures such as tarsier and various snakes and spiders come out, succumb to the senses and experience the density of the jungle.

If you’re extremely lucky, you may have the opportunity to spot the endangered Clouded Leopard which has recently been spotted in the area by our tour guide!

Rehabilitation Camps

Camp 1 - tanjung harapan, camp 2 - pondok tanggui, camp 3 - camp leakey.

Baby orangutan eating watermelon

This camp meaning “cape of good hope” was originally designed as a training centre for ex-captive and orphaned baby orangutans. Also near the camp is a reforestation project which includes a botanical nursery used for growing seedlings. Follow the path loop and watch the orangutans make their way over the jungle canopy to the platform and then back into the dense jungle with a full belly.

Tour walk along the boardwalk into Pondok Tanggui

This feeding station was once a release centre for pre-adolescent ex-captive and orphaned orangutans after they were rehabilitated.

Today the station is designed to provide supplemental food for the wild and semi-wild orangutans, which is important in order to maintain their nutrition especially when food is hard to come by during drought seasons.

You’ll be there to witness feeding time at 9.00am which is easily accessible via a short walk into the jungle.

Camp Leakey feeding station

A research centre for orangutans and one of the places where older orangutans are reintroduced into the rainforest, Camp Leakey is named after the legendary paleo-anthropologist, Louis Leakey.

This camp is located at the end of the black mirrored water of the Sekonyer River and is one of the most magical places on earth. Follow the boardwalk into the jungle where the local rehabilitated orangutans make their way to the feeding platforms at 2pm daily where fresh fruit and sugar cane is left by the rangers.

Riverside village experience

Longboat cruise, cooking class, kumai village tour.

Sekonyer River village

Sekonyer River village

Why not do your part for the forest, and plant some trees!  Friends of the National Park Foundation works to protect Indonesia’s endangered wildlife while restoring forests and helping local communities become sustainable. Take a small trek from the river bank into a reforestation site where you can purchase native trees and plant them to increase the density and diversity on the planting site. All profits go straight to the foundation to continue their restoration and sustainability efforts within Indonesia.

Longboat cruise

Longboats are commonly used by locals to travel along the river, but not many tourists are seen onboard. Our tours offer you the chance to hop in and speed up the river and explore backwaters that aren’t accessible by the larger tour boats.

borneo orangutan tour malaysia

If the orangutans weren’t everyone’s tour highlight, then the food sure would be! Our onboard cook will walk you through traditional recipes from the region before you indulge in the meal. This is a great chance to cook and try new foods that are common within Asia that you may not have tried before such as cassava and okra.

Before you cruise down the river into the thick of the jungle, take a short walk around the streets of the riverside village with our local tour guide. Try some local foods, look behind the scenes and immerse yourself in the Indonesian culture to see how the locals live.

Highly recommended if this is your first time in Indonesia.

Following male orangutan to feeding station

Why visit feeding stations?

Orangutans who visit these platforms are free to roam the jungle, but have gained the habit of visiting the feeding station during their rehabilitation. Visiting the feeding stations allow visitors a near-guaranteed opportunity to see the semi-wild orangutans within close proximity.

Due to deforestation, the variety of fruit within the jungle is limited and hard to source for rehabilitated orangutans. The feeding stations offer the orangutans a chance to supplement their diets and a chance for the local rangers to keep an eye on their health and progression.

Orangutans at these feeding stations are in no way restricted from roaming into the jungle, and offer visitors the opportunity to get up closer to these magnificent creatures.

If visiting the feeding stations just isn’t for you, that is completely fine! We can spend more time looking for wild orangutans and other wildlife instead.

Brief itinerary

Day 1-2: Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary , Sun Bear Centre and Rainforest Discovery Centre. Arrive Sandakan airport (east Sabah), two nights staying in the Sepilok Forest Edge resort. Transfer from airport included, self organised visits to the centres where they have their guides.

Day 3-5: Wildlife safari in Deramakot Forest Reserve in our 4WD . Shared vehicle with up to seven people and our guide, dawn and evening drives with shared accommodation in a forest chalet. Deramokot has been much talked about as the  best wildlife destination in Sabah . The wildlife count for our clients has been remarkable, but without a doubt a sighting of the rare clouded leopard stands as one of the great highlights of the holiday. Some of our trip advisor feedback has been great. The twin en-suite aircon rooms and hot and cold water. There is electricity which runs 24/7 and food is served in a traditional hall. We provide some palm oil based soap but do bring your own biodegradable toiletries.

Day 6-7: Safari on the Kinabatangan River . Check out of Deramakot and say farewell to the AA Borneo guide at Deramakot, and transfer to Sukau for the next part of the holiday on the river. Wildlife boat journeys are early morning and at dusk and they are shared, with forest walks during the day and accommodation in the Borneo Nature Lodge. Sometimes due to availability we need to move to another lodge on the river. Guides are in-house.

Day 8: Travel back to the coast and depart from Sandakan airport.

Note that sometimes the lodges are booked up, depending on when the booking is made, and we can offer a similar lodge of the same standard.

What's it like visiting the rainforest?

This is not a particularly physically demanding trip in terms of the activities that you will undertake. The focus is on enjoying the environment and surroundings in an adventurous but comfortable way.

The rainforest is a clean and pure place to visit. The canopy offers excellent shade from the intense sun keeping temperatures cooler than in the cities. However, it is very humid and you will need to continually drink water. We travel using tracks and trails which are used by vehicles - it is unlikely that we will be off the beaten track with a machete on this trip. Sometimes the paths around lodges can be muddy and slippery and the terrain is up and down, but trekking pace is never fast. You will only carry day packs when jungle trekking and there will be lots of stops for drinking and cooling off in the streams and rivers.

Packing List

  • Camera bags, tripods etc
  • Lightweight trekking or walking boots
  • Lightweight clothes, synthetic-material trousers and shorts, shirts and T-shirts, jumper or mid layer fleece, socks, trainers or sandals.
  • Sun hat, sun lotion, SPF lip screen and sunglasses
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Camera kit, chargers, electronics
  • Personal wash kit - eco-soap recommended
  • Personal first aid - headache tablets, oral rehydration and plasters are useful
  • Passport, insurance papers, spending money, air tickets, reading books, diary.

Travel very light and compact in the jungle. In addition to the information below,  check out  extra kit tips  and survival tips for trekking in the jungle. You can also read more on these pages about preparing for your Borneo holiday and about health and comfort , and something about the culture in Borneo .

Note that anything delicate, absorbent or electronic is likely to suffer from the humid atmosphere, all such items should be housed in a good quality waterproof stuff sack or pouch.

Why Adventure Alternative for this Borneo Wildlife Tour?

  • This package combines some of the best of Sabah for wildlife and you are totally financially protected with the UK company and the Malaysian company rather than booking the individual elements. We also provide all the 'in-between' elements like transfers and people to meet you and guide you. We also know all the owners of the lodges and have a long history of collaboration with the park authorities. We can also offer the best advice for extra places to visit and all the questions you may have preparing for your holiday.
  • We were the first company to be allowed to take people into Deramakot Reserve and our wildlife guides are the best, they have spent years there and they know the best places to go and they are very good at working with real wildlife experts and enthusiasts. This trip includes a much longer time with the 4x4 vehicle on safari too, up to seven hours per day/night.
  • Our staff are highly knowledgeable, experienced and have a deep love and concern for the protection of the environment and flora and fauna in the areas we visit.
  • We have always tried to avoid the mainstream destinations and itineraries for holidays to Borneo and researched places that are more remote and special, and we are always looking for new and authentic places to explore.
  • All Borneo trips include a donation made to a fig tree planting project.

Borneo Wildlife Tour Itinerary

The dates that we have on this page are pre-booked and based on twin rooms. If you would like to book your own preferred dates then please contact us to check for availability. Sometimes we have to swap the itinerary around or use a different lodge in order to make the programme work. There is also an option to use a lodge just outside Danum Valley instead of going to Deramakot; the two areas co-join so the wildlife watching is of the same quality.

Day 1: Sepilok - orangutans and sunbears

Arriving at Sandakan airport, a 30 minute transfer to Sepilok Forest Edge, situated next to the world famous wildlife centres. Most flights into Sandakan tend to arrive after lunch so the rest of the day can be spent resting after the flight and visiting the environs of the lodge and acclimatising to the heat and humidity.

Accommodation in the Sepilok Forest Edge Resort . Note sometimes due to availability we have to choose other lodges but they will always be in the Sandakan area and of the same high quality.

Meals: Dinner only

Sepilok Forest Edge Resort Standard chalet.jpg

Day 2: Sepilok - orangutans and sun bears

After breakfast the guide will come to meet you for a full day visiting the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre to see these iconic primates at close quarters and learn more about the rehabilitation and conservation work that takes place here. Next, visit the Sun Bear Conservation Center, established in 2008, which provides care and rehabilitation for orphaned and captive Bornean sunbears with the long-term goal of releasing them to the wild. Spare time can be spent looking for wildlife around the resort where hornbills and orangutans are sometimes seen. Then there is the Rainforest Discovery centre and in the evening a night walk.

Meals: Full board

Sun-Bear Centre.jpg

Day 3 - 5: Deramakot Forest Reserve

After checkout a drive of 2 hours to Telupid town for lunch and then a further 2 hours drive through palm oil plantations and forest to Deramokot Forest Reserve

Deramakot is the jewel in the crown of the Sabah Forestry Department. It covers an area of over 100,000 hectares along with the adjacent Tangkulap Reserve. It was the first tropical forest reserve to be recognised by the Forest Stewardship Council for good forest governance and since our company in Borneo pioneered nature tourism in the reserve it has become famous for its astonishing mammal and bird diversity.

The exact program at Deramakot will depend on weather and recent animal sightings. Your wildlife guide will discuss the options with you but as a rule there are 4x4 safaris and walking safaris every day. Each safari is shared and we offer seven hours per 24 which is much more than the usual two hours in other reserves. There is also an optional 4x4 drive to a safe swimming area in a clean river which is good for picnics. The vehicle can be booked privately but on a first come first served basis so do contact us in advance.

Deramakot has simple rooms split into two chalets on a small hill of 3 bedrooms in each. Although they have air con and hot water ensuite bathrooms with 24/7 electricity these rooms are not considered ‘luxury’. They are perfectly clean and comfortable though. Meals are cooked by in-house cooks so can be varied to suit requirements, and these are served in the restaurant area, consisting of local Asian dishes and fruits. We provide a bar of palm oil based soap but do bring your own biodegradable toiletries as well.

If Deramakot is completely full for bookings on other bespoke dates then we have the option of using a lodge in the Danum Valley Conservation Reserve which is nearby.

clouded leopard-deramokot.jpg

Day 6 - 7: Kinabatangan River

Time for morning birding before breakfast and check out by 9am. You will say farewell to the AA Borneo guide who stays at Deramakot all the time and then there is a 2 hour drive to the river village of Sukau,

Sukau was the first village on the Kinabatangan River to develop nature tourism and is now a busy hub of lodges and homestays. We will be using the Borneo Nature Lodge on the river for accommodation and they also provide in-house wildlife guides.

The afternoon boat safaris begins at 4.30pm with dinner at 7.00pm. The dawn chorus of birds and insects and animals is the start of the morning boat safari at around 6.30am. During the day and at night time there are walks in the jungle. Longer river trips are possible, especially to try and view the rare Borneo pygmy elephants, please contact us for more information about this.

maroon langur_deramokot.jpg

Day 8: Depart or next destination

Following breakfast, transfer 2 hours to Sandakan airport for departure. The transfer is normally after breakfast and a nature walk, so expect to be back in Sandakan for late morning if you are booking outbound flights.

We have a number of other add-on options to this holiday including a visit to the nearby islands or staying at another lodge like the Kawag Nature Lodge (pictured below) in Danum Conservation Area or a visit to the Tabin Nature Reserve. These can be seen on the Extras tab on this page and are on offer when you book your trip.

Arrive Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

Arrive in Kota Kinabalu (or KK, as it’s known locally), on the northwestern coast of Borneo. Take the day at leisure to acclimate. If you’re up for it, go for a walk in the bustling city and explore its vibrant and diverse markets, boardwalks and beaches. Meet your expedition leader and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner. Overnight at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru .

Kota Kinabalu / Lahad Datu / Danum Valley

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a flight to Lahad Datu in the Eastern Sabah state. Travel overland by vehicle to Danum Valley Conservation Area, the largest contiguous virgin rainforest remaining in Southeast Asia. Danum protects nearly 200 square miles of lowland forest, and is recognized as one of the world’s most complex ecosystems. It is home to a staggering array of wildlife, including Bornean Orangutan, Western Tarsier, Sambar Deer, Proboscis Monkey, Red-leaf Monkey, Bornean Gibbon, Pygmy Elephant and Clouded Leopard, to name but a few. Upon arrival, settle into your bungalow at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge . Enjoy lunch, then head out for an afternoon trek on the lodge’s nature trails and elevated canopy walkways. As the sun sets, listen for Bearded Pig rooting under the bungalows. Dinner and overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge .

Danum Valley

Rise each morning to the din of gibbons and the raucous laughter of Helmeted Hornbills. Take two full days to explore further on foot and by vehicle, searching for animals, including the elusive orangutan. Danum Valley has been designated an Important Bird Area, and is home to nearly 350 species, including the Great Argus Pheasant, eight species of hornbills, seven species of jewel-like pittas, and the bizarre Borneo Bristlehead. Enjoy night drives looking for the diminutive Leopard Cat, Common and Small-toothed Palm Civets, Black and Red Giant Flying Squirrels, and the curious Bornean Colugo. With luck and persistence, you may also encounter the rare Marbled Cat, Western Tarsier, or even Bornean Clouded Leopard. Dinners and overnights at Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Danum Valley / Kinabatangan

This morning, drive north toward the dense mangrove forests of Lower Kinabatangan Segama Wetlands, Malaysia’s largest Ramsar site and home to one of the highest wildlife concentrations in Southeast Asia. Here, wild orangutans, Proboscis and Hose’s Leaf Monkeys, Crab–eating and Pig-tailed Macaques, Pygmy Elephant, and a great array of birdlife dwell within the dense riverine forest. At the village of Sukau, board a boat for the final stretch to the lodge via the Kinabatangan River. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon river cruise, looking for wildlife along the river edge. Dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort.

Kinabatangan Wetlands

Spend time today on the river, starting with an early morning cruise. Watch Proboscis Monkeys waking from their slumbers in the mangroves, performing death-defying acrobatics over the water in attempts to evade the ever-watchful Saltwater Crocodiles frequenting the backwaters. Explore the river’s tributaries, looking for Hose’s and Silvered Langurs, Crab-eating Macaque, Storm’s Stork, and orangutan feeding at fruiting figs along the banks. This evening, take a spotlighting boat ride, and keep watch for Flat-headed Cat patrolling the banks, Slow Loris moving through the canopy, and Buffy Fish Owl on the hunt. Dinner and overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort.

Kinabatangan / Deramakot Forest Reserve

After breakfast, take a boat back to Sukau, then travel west by vehicle to Deramakot. Despite its status as a “reduced impact logging” concession (10% is entirely protected for conservation), Deramakot remains one of Sabah’s best wildlife-viewing destinations, with 75% of Sabah’s mammal species found within its 210 square miles of mixed lowland forest. Settle into your basic park-style chalet at base camp and enjoy dinner, followed by an evening spotlighting drive to look for Common Palm Civet, Leopard Cat and Sambar Deer. Dinner and overnight at Deramakot Chalets.

Deramakot Forest Reserve

Savor the surprisingly well-preserved forest surroundings—Deramakot has the rare distinction of being the longest certified “well-managed” rainforest concession in the world, since 1997.For three full days, enjoy morning and evening game drives to look for Bornean Orangutan, Sun Bear, Wild Boar, Binturong, Pygmy Elephant, Banteng, and Clouded Leopard, as well as a wide array of birds, from kingfishers and broadbills to pittas and the reserve’s “featured” species, Helmeted and Wreathed Hornbills. Learn about the reserve’s Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) and the measures it takes to preserve habitat for wildlife. See RIL in action along several jungle hiking trails. Dinners and overnights at Deramakot Chalets.

Deramakot / Sepilok Rehabilitation Center

Leave Deramakot this morning, heading northeast to Sepilok. After lunch, visit the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, started in 1964 to help baby orangutan orphaned by logging, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. Get close-up views of some of the center’s 300 babies as they come in for their afternoon feeding.  This evening take a  walk to look for Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Slow Loris, or even the scarce Malay Stink Badger. Dinner and overnight at Sepilok Nature Resort .

Sepilok / Kota Kinabalu / Rasa Ria Reserve

After breakfast, visit the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, founded in 2008 to rehabilitate orphaned Malayan Sun Bear, the world’s smallest bear species. Then, head to the airport for a flight back to Kota Kinabalu. Take the rest of today to explore the 400-acre nature reserve on the hotel’s property. Dinner and overnight at Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort.

Rasa Ria Reserve – Mt. Kinabalu

Enjoy breakfast seaside, then drive to Mt. Kinabalu, which at 13,000 feet is the highest point between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Explore the montane rainforest surrounding the park headquarters, home to more than 800 orchid species and five kinds of carnivorous pitcher plants. Look for Jentinck’s and Prevosts’ Squirrels, and some 300 species of birds, including minivets, babblers, laughing-thrushes, and the endemic Whitehead’s Broadbill and Short-tailed Magpie. This afternoon, visit the lowland rainforest on the other side of the mountain to hike among the largest mosses on Earth and more than 600 species of fern—exceeding the number found on the entire African mainland. See colorful butterflies and hornbills. With luck, you may also spot the incredible Rafflesia flower. Return to the hotel for a farewell dinner with fellow travelers. Dinner and overnight at Shangri La Rasa Ria Resort.

Kota Kinabalu / Depart Borneo

After breakfast, head to the Kota Kinabalu airport for your international flights home.

What You'll Do

This combo adventure will start with a visit to the wonderful Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary as feeding time approaches. Enclosed in a large area of lush rainforest, it is home to endangered orangutans who have been rescued from captivity & are now part of a successful rehabilitation program. In response to the calls of the resident park rangers during the scheduled feeding time, these amazing primates will descend from the canopy to the lower branches of trees near the feeding area and offer us the chance to see them at fairly close quarters which, for many visitors, is the wildlife highlight of their Borneo trip.

After feeding time, we continue our journey to one of the few remaining Bidayuh tribe’s longhouses in Kuching, the Annah Rais Longhouse, for an opportunity to experience some Bornean culture. The centuries-old longhouses are home to over 80 families and boast a history of over 200 years of existence. Explore this living Bidayuh Village with your local guide and learn about the culture of the Land Dayaks who were once headhunters . Step into the sacred house that still, to this day, worship ancient human skulls before visiting one of the local establishments for a sip of its famous rice wine, tuak.

After saying goodbye to the longhouse, we take a quick transfer to the start of the kayaking adventure for a safety briefing from your kayak guide . Float down a stretch of the untouched tributary of the Sarawak River to discover hidden waterfalls, explore limestone formations, and enjoy the opportunity to have a dip in the cold refreshing mountain water. At the halfway mark, drop by a Bidayuh tribe’s village to explore how the native’s farm and fish and attempt to cross the village’s scary looking suspension swinging bridge that the local community still uses for their everyday activities. We will then enjoy a delicious local lunch served riverside.

After our meal, we’ll continue to paddle leisurely and savor the peace and tranquillity of the rainforest . This serene and smooth flowing river is a great place for friends and family to compete in a fun race and water fights. When the water level permits, stopover at a mini waterfall for swimming and river fish feeding before ending the fantastic kayaking tour at the Kampung Semarang.

Overview of Tour

This day tour will usher your to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre to greet the fuzzy fellas who share 97% of our DNA!

About the Location

Second largest city in Sabah and born along the north-eastern seaboard of Sabah, Sandakan is the gate-way for eco-adventures as it offers unrivaled beauty in all its natural glory. Though it lacks the cosmopolitan pulse of Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan throbs with plenty of wild wonders.

Blessed with a naturally endowed hinterland, the Kinabatangan flows from its headwaters in southwest Sabah to the Sulu Sea east of Sandakan. The river flows through a remarkably varied terrain within Sandakan that includes limestone caves, dryland dipterocarp forest, riverine forest, freshwater swamp forest, oxbow lakes and saltwater mangrove swamp which makes for a long list of things to see and do.
