Travel Study

BYU Marriott MBA students have a broad range of travel opportunities, from study abroad programs to recruiting conferences and investment seminars. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these unique opportunities.

International Travel Study

The MBA Asia study abroad gives participants a comprehensive overview of trends in business currently at play and an in-depth view into companies currently operating in the region. Students see firsthand the strategies companies have pursued to take part in the explosive growth of Asia in places such as Japan (Tokyo), Thailand (Phuket, Bangkok), Myanmar, Cambodia (Siem Riep), Hong Kong, and China (Beijing, Shanghai, Tibet)—and how these companies have adapted to the ever-changing business, social, and political environments. Along the way, the group visits large multinational corporations, government-owned enterprises, and emerging local businesses in diverse industries, including finance, manufacturing, product development, marketing, and logistics.

This study abroad visits a variety of countries in order to compare and contrast cultures, business practices, and management styles. Students meet with executives from a variety of industries and are exposed to different cultures in order to understand how US businesses must adapt to be successful in overseas markets. Past trips have included stops in England, France, Spain, and Morocco.

EUROPE REAL ESTATE

Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and London serve as a campus for 10 enlightening days in a program designed for students to learn about international real estate investment and the challenges facing global investors. Attendees learn about real estate investment from a global perspective through meetings with executives at prestigious firms and visits to numerous properties. Sightseeing highlights include the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Anne Frank House, Big Ben, and the Palace of Westminster.

The Ghana program consists of two courses: a preparation course (MBA 688: Social Innovation, 1.5 credit hours) and the in-country experience and reflection course (MBA 693R: Special Topics in Management, variable credit). The goal of the course is to prepare students to spend their time in-country, working as a team, gathering high-value primary data for a client, and compiling insights into a final deliverable. The in-country experience and reflection course includes approximately 15 days in Ghana following up on the content and data previously studied. Students will also learn firsthand about global business in Africa.

LATIN AMERICA

Students explore and contrast business operations in Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, and Peru. Visits cover diverse industries including finance, manufacturing, product development, marketing, and logistics. In addition, trips to cultural sites—including museums, temples, and monuments such as the Panama Canal and Machu Picchu—are included.

OXFORD & INDIA

This social enterprise seminar is a sharply focused, six-week experience sponsored by BYU Marriott’s Whitmore Global Business Center . Classes are held at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, where students learn the skills, theory, and practice of social innovation, responsible entrepreneurship, and ethical leadership. The seminar gives students a chance to work on an actual social enterprise project and attend the annual Oxford Business and Poverty Conference. Students then fly to India to continue implementing and refining the project on-site.

National Recruiting Trips

Each year, the BYU Marriott MBA career management team organizes informational career networking and exploration events with companies around the country and across industries. These trips usually involve employer site visits, industry panels, and meetings with alumni. These trips are often coordinated through well-placed alumni who help to ensure great visibility and engagement via career panels, roundtables, and alumni networking. Trips have included visits to companies such as Amazon, American Express, Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Hershey, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Nike, and PwC, among others.

Annual trips usually include:

  • Silicon Valley tech trek
  • Consumer packaged goods trip to the Midwest or Northeast
  • Northwest trip
  • Career conference trip

The team also supports and helps coordinate student-led trips as well.

Orientations

Mba marketing association.

Before the beginning of the school year, students in the marketing track travel to Moab, Utah, with a group of professors and corporate recruiters. It is a time to connect as a group, network with one another, and have an incredible time in one of Utah’s natural playgrounds.

STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCES

Students in the strategic human resources track travel to the Snake River in Idaho with HR and leadership professors and corporate recruiters as the school year begins. The river-rafting trip is a time for students to connect as a group and network with recruiters.

Student Conferences

The National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) holds a conference for all women pursuing an MBA. The purpose of the association is to empower women in business. The conference is an ideal opportunity for students to network with other MBAs from around the country.

The National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Conference is open to MBA students of every ethnic background to gain exposure to recruiters from around the world.

Prospanica holds a conference every October that is open to recruiters from around the world. It is a perfect opportunity for students of every ethnic background to build networks and gain exposure to a large number of career options.

  • Toggle Item Can I apply for scholarships before being accepted into the program? You can apply for the ISP Program Discount as part of your program application. You can apply for other, non-ISP scholarships before being accepted into a program.
  • Toggle Item Will BYU refund my first payments if I get a scholarship that covers them? Yes. Due to payment deadlines, you may need to pay a deposit and/or other program fees before you receive your scholarship. If you receive a scholarship after making payments, your scholarship money will be added to your “My Financial Center”. The funds will be used to pay any outstanding charges on your account. Any remaining balance will then be refunded to you. Please notify the Financial Accounts assistant, 207 HRCB, (801) 422-6690, [email protected] , and the Financial Aid office, D-155 ASB, (801) 422-4104, of any financial discount you plan to apply to the cost of your international study program.

BYU students who register for ISP must have a current ecclesiastical endorsement on file with the University.
  • Toggle Item How do I obtain an ecclesiastical endorsement? Visit endorse.byu.edu and start the endorsement process for a Continuing/Currently Enrolled Student (current BYU Students) or Applicant Student (non-BYU students). Non-BYU Provo students must be endorsed by both their bishop and stake president.
  • Toggle Item How likely is it that I will be accepted into my program of choice? Acceptance rates vary by program and depend on group size and program requirements. If you apply early, you typically have a better chance of being accepted into your program of choice.
  • Toggle Item Can I be refunded my $35 application fee should I decide not to participate in my program? The $35 application fee is non-refundable unless ISP cancels the program.
  • Toggle Item Where can I find my in-progress application? To access your current application, please visit isp.byu.edu . You will be required to log in with your BYU Net ID and password. Once logged in, you will be able to see your in-progress application on the main screen. Click on the program to open it up and continue with the application.
  • Toggle Item The application is having trouble automatically transferring all my data. How can I fix this? If you are a BYU-Provo student, your personal information should automatically transfer into the application. If your information is not transferring all data, please exit the application and try again. Make sure your personal information in MyBYU under ‘Update my Personal Information,’ is up-to-date. If you are continuing to experience difficulties, please email [email protected] and an ISP assistant will assist you with your application. If you are not a BYU-Provo student, you will need to manually enter this data (this includes BYU-Idaho and BYU-Hawaii students).

Financial Aid & Study Abroad Programs

Yes, you can receive Pell Grant funds during the spring and/or summer terms which you could use to pay for some study abroad costs, if you meet eligibility requirements and register for the appropriate number of credits. Most students are required to enroll in 6+ credits during spring/summer to receive Pell Grant funds. Your enrollment during the fall and winter semesters may affect your Pell Grant eligibility for spring/summer terms. For more information on spring/summer financial aid, visit here .

Yes, you can take out loans to help pay for your study abroad. We encourage you to borrow any needed loan funds during winter semester, since many of the charges are due prior to leaving on your study abroad program. This will also reduce the likelihood that there are issues with your eligibility while you are abroad. However, if you are not eligible for loans during winter semester, you can still potentially receive loans during the spring and/or summer terms, as long as you are enrolled in 6 total credits during those terms and meet all other eligibility criteria.

During winter semester, if you have remaining federal loan eligibility and you are enrolled in 6 credits, submit a case to request the loan funds. If you are not eligible to receive loan funds during winter, when you enroll in at least 6 credits for spring/summer you will be offered your remaining loan eligibility automatically. If you do not see the loan offer or if you have additional questions, please contact Enrollment Services to speak with an Enrollment Services Counselor .

If you are not eligible for federal financial aid including loans and all scholarship options have been exhausted, another option is alternative/private loans. You can research these loans on our website .

In most cases, the Cost of Attendance allowance is high enough to cover study abroad costs. However, if you have additional financial need after receiving your full eligibility, we may be able to increase your Cost of Attendance or adjust your loan to include winter and spring/summer terms to cover your needed costs. Please contact Enrollment Services to make an appointment with a counselor to discuss your options.

Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria and complete the appropriate steps to have it applied. See the details here .

Yes, you may be able to use scholarship funds if you meet all eligibility criteria and enroll in the minimum number of credits required for the scholarship(s). The eligibility requirements may differ between BYU scholarships and off-campus scholarships . For more information about off-campus scholarship opportunities, visit here .

We understand that situations come up, and you may be waiting for financial aid or other payment arrangements to pay your study abroad charges. If you have outstanding study abroad charges, a registration hold will be placed on your account until the balance is paid off. The Student Financials Office will remove the hold only if they're able to confirm that the outstanding balance has been paid or will be covered by financial aid or scholarships.

If your financial aid or scholarships will cover the entire balance, please submit a case to the Student Financials Office.

For any questions or needed assistance, please contact Enrollment Services . We are happy to help!

Make sure to set up direct deposit or update your bank account information so you can receive your financial aid refund as quickly as possible. Otherwise, your refund will be sent as a check to your mailing address.

Using Independent Study has been such a great experience for me! Independent Study allowed me the flexibility to work at my own pace and finish classes while I was across the country for the summer. Without this option, I wouldn’t be able to graduate as soon as I am. The material in each course is very organized, and I have learned so much. I’m very grateful I had the option to take Independent Study and earn credit.

I really liked how the course was structured and how I could go at my own pace, browse through different units ahead if I wanted and have plenty of resources that could help me succeed. The teacher always graded my work really quickly. I learn best by example and the videos, feedback from the self checks and the math labs were extremely useful. Overall I am really happy with the course.

The World Can be Your Campus–Still

By E. Liza Richards ’02 in the Winter 2002 Issue

BYU Travel Study helps BYU alumni and others continue their education in the classroom of the world.

High atop the Peruvian Andes sit the ruins of Machu Picchu, one of the dozens of locations visited by BYU Travel Study.

Did you ever want to have a study-abroad experience in college but didn’t have the time?

“Just because you’ve graduated doesn’t mean your education has to end,” says BYU Travel Study director George J. Talbot, ’64. Offering 60 to 70 programs in a typical year, Travel Study directs tours ranging from week-long jaunts to month-long stays all over the world. The most popular tours are Central American Book of Mormon tours, biblical tours in the Holy Land, and Church history tours in the eastern United States. But Travel Study also goes to Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Alaska, and Scandinavia.

Dedicated to providing an education of the mind and spirit, BYU Travel Study mingles the adventure of traveling with the stimulation of study. Two months before the tour, participants receive a booklet explaining the history and culture of the countries on the itinerary. Now familiar with the sites they will be visiting, the group leaves for their tour. “You can always learn about something in a book,” says Talbot, “but being surrounded by the smells, the sounds, the culture and history—that is an education. A picture is worth a thousand words, but actually going to the site is worth a thousand pictures.”

On the tour BYU professors and Church Educational System instructors lecture on subjects they have taught and studied their entire lives, Talbot says. Travel Study also offers college credit on an independent-study basis for assignments completed while on tour.

Each tour is also designed to inspire the soul. Every morning begins with a devotional, and groups are encouraged to attend church meetings with local congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Group members often form tight bonds through their connection as Church members and their common adventures on the trip. “About 80 percent of our groups have a reunion three months later, where they share their scrapbooks and slides and enjoy each other’s company again,” reports Talbot.

Travel Study also provides tours for private groups.

Whether participants are traveling with siblings or strangers, Talbot says the memories forged on these tours are the real advantage of a Travel Study experience. “You only have to go on a Travel Study trip once, and your mind can go back time and time again free of charge.”

BYU passed its 1st exam, but bigger tests await from Week 2 onward

By sean walker, ksl.com | posted - sept. 2, 2024 at 9:02 a.m..

Estimated read time: 5-6 minutes

PROVO — Jake Retzlaff couldn't keep the smile off his face.

The BYU starting quarterback — yeah, he can admit that now — had just come off the game of his life in a 41-13 win over FCS foe Southern Illinois , earning his first victory as a Division I starter and officially snapping a five-game losing skid from lasts year's inaugural season in the Big 12 campaign.

There will be plenty of mistakes to fix, miscues to clean up, and film to break down if the Cougars (1-0) want to build on Saturday night's season opener against the No. 11 ranked team in the FC S. But for now, Retzlaff is making sure to enjoy a win — one that had become all-too difficult to attain since he arrived at BYU as the No. 1-rated junior college quarterback in the country.

For now, Retzlaff passed the test, or maybe even two of them, going back to the time he knew he had won the starting job over Baylor and USF transfer Gerry Bohanon Jr. until the first snaps of Saturday's pregame.

"You want to know how long we successfully kept it under wraps?" he said with a grin. "What was it, middle of last week, when we officially ended camp and started prepping for Southern Illinois."

Retzlaff was at the best of his young BYU career, when the 6-foot-1 redshirt junior threw for a career-high 348 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-30 passing, finishing with a career-best passer rating of 197.1.

It's the best passer rating by a BYU quarterback since Jaren Hall, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, posted a 216.6 against Utah Tech in 2022, and the first time Retzlaff cleard the 300-yard plateau since he did it 14 times at Golden West and Riverside City College.

He was slinging from the start, too. Retzlaff led scoring drives on four of his first six series against the Salukis — one of them also ended in a missed 36-yard field goal that Will Ferrin later pulled back with a career-long 50-yarder, as well.

He targeted 11 receivers on the night and hit 10 of them — the most for a BYU team since hitting the same mark against Oregon in 2022 — led by Chase Roberts' 108 yards on seven catches and two catches for 70 yards and a touchdown from redshirt freshman Jojo Phillips.

Retzlaff also ran eight times for 31 yards, and helped LJ Martin power to a 68-yard, one-touchdown game on 13 carries on the ground to go with another 7-yard touchdown pass out of the backfield. Folau Ropati also ran 13 times for 57 yards, and Miles Davis and Enoch Nawahine also saw time at running back.

The same offense scored a touchdown and a field goal in five possessions after opening the second half with back-to-back touchdowns. But the defense, with coordinator Jay Hill overlooking from atop LaVell Edwards Stadium after recovering from heart surgery the day before , held Southern Illinois to as many touchdowns as interceptions after the break to seal the win.

Retzlaff's aim was true more often than not as he finished the game without an interception, and BYU was plus-two in turnover margin while the quarterback finished with eight chunk yardage plays.

"He's just a tough kid," BYU coach Kalani Sitake said, noting that Bohanon will continue to play a role on the team. "He has an amazing work ethic and great abilities. I love the person that he is, and he just happens to play great football."

BYU was "ready to take shots" in the passing game, Retzlaff said, and an offense led by Martin, Ropati, and four returning starters on the offensive line in Connor Pay, Brayden Keim, Caleb Etienne and Weylin Lapuaho that ranked 118th nationally last year in rushing yards per game was eager to acquit itself — if even for just one night.

"We knew what we had, and that's why we decided to role with it," Martin said. "They were able to show it tonight, and we plan on showing it next week."

BYU will need to improve on Saturday's performance, though.

The Salukis are talented, ranked No. 11 nationally in the subdivision of college football beneath where the Cougars play, but were also replacing last year's starting quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers and seven of the Salukis' top defensive players including leaders in tackles, sacks and interceptions, as noted by BYU Radio analyst Hans Olsen .

BYU opened as an 11-point underdog ahead of Friday's road trip to SMU, which is 2-0 after a 29-24 win at Nevada in Week 0 and a 59-7 blowout victory of FCS Houston Christian on Saturday.

The Mustangs, who are 0-4 all-time against BYU, are led by a returning starting quarterback in Preston Stone, who threw for 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns in 12 games last year with a pass efficiency rating of 161.3.

But an early win may be just what the Cougars needed after struggling to end the 2023 season. If nothing else, a seemingly expected win over SIU should give BYU a bit of confidence ahead of Friday night (5 p.m. MDT, ESPN2).

"We knew who we are. We're confident in ourselves; everybody in that offense knows what we can do," Retzlaff said. "I think it's a validation more for you guys (the media) than anything. We know our abilities, and those guys went out there and played just as good as they knew they would play. I'm super proud of those guys for doing that."
