Range remains the most imperative figure for those wanting to consider a new electric car . Global brands have invested expansive capital in new battery technologies, resulting in today's EVs being far more practical than the options that were available just five years ago. In the U.S., the EPA conducts extensive testing to give us a clear idea of what we can expect a new electric car to cover on a single charge, which it updates every year.

Drivers typically have a good sense of how much fuel an ICE vehicle consumes based on their personal ownership experience, but many are unsure about the electricity consumption of an electric vehicle . Understanding this is essential for evaluating whether an electric car is economical to operate.

We know that an EV's claimed or estimated range depends on the battery capacity and the power consumption of the electric motor. Aerodynamics and curb weight also play a role. There's an understanding that lower power consumption leads to a longer range, but battery capacity also plays a role in this result. Early electric cars lacked good efficiency returns, but manufacturers are now focused on improving this by investing large capital in future electric drivetrain technologies.

The General German Automobile Club, commonly referred to as the ADAC, regularly tests electric cars of various sizes and price ranges, in the same fashion as the EPA. It pays special attention to range and power consumption as part of its car tests. These tests follow standardized conditions, applying equally to all types of vehicles, including electric ones, under the ADAC Ecotest . The ADAC continuously updates its list of tested models, but only includes vehicles currently available on the market, excluding discontinued series.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites and other authoritative sources, including the ADAC, the EPA, and the Federal Highway Administration.

2024 BMW IX: It Just Makes More Sense Than BMW's XM

Hear me out on this one... BMW might have nailed the electrified SUV the first time. When the XM is just too much, don't forget about BMW's own IX.

The BMW iX And Lucid Air Are the Best EV Road-Trippers

The ADAC explains that smaller electric models don't necessarily achieve long-range figures by adopting larger battery packs. The Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV achieved impressive range results despite featuring 65 kWh net battery capacity. This is primarily thanks to their more efficient electric drivetrain technologies and lower curb weight figures. In the ADAC Ecotest, even the Renault Zoe , with its 52 kWh battery, covered 208 miles before running out of juice. The French automotive group has since put this model to rest with the next-generation R5 E-Tech set to replace it with a larger battery option. The ADAC says it will conduct a test on this option once it becomes available.

Currently, the BMW iX xDrive50 and Lucid Air Grand Touring lead with test ranges of 379 miles, benefiting from both their efficient drives and their large batteries. The Bavarian option features a 105 kWh battery, while the American sedan employs a larger 112 kWh pack. The ADAC Ecotest allows for direct comparisons between vehicles under standardized conditions. However, real-world results may differ due to factors like high speeds and cold temperatures, which can significantly reduce range. Interestingly, both of these figures are noticeably less than their EPA-estimated figures.

The BMW iX xDrive50 Covers 379 Miles On A Single Charge

The is the Bavarian brand's flagship electric SUV option, with proportions akin to the X5. The xDrive50 model is the entry-level specification in the U.S. for the time being, but we know that a range of rear-wheel drive eDrive40 derivatives are on the way. This particular option features a pair of BMW's electrically excited motors, producing a collective 516 horsepower and 564 pound-feet.

BMW iX xDrive50 Performance Specifications

The iX features Samsung SDI's 111.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which takes 78 hours to charge via a conventional 120-volt Level One charging point and 11 hours when using a Level Two 240-volt system. Direct current 350-volt Level Three fast charging replenishes 10 to 80 percent in 35 minutes. The EPA estimates the base xDrive50 to cover 311 miles on a single charge when equipped with the 20-inch wheels. This decreases to 307 miles on 22-inch wheels. This is relatively close to the ADAC's testing results.

The Lucid Air Grand Touring Covers 379 Miles On A Single Charge

The Lucid Air Grand Touring 's position at the top of the ADAC's testing is no surprise to us, but we'll admit that its result is much lower than we'd think. This particular derivative features a pair of permanent-magnet motors that work together to generate 819 horsepower and 885 pound-feet. The EPA estimates this model will cover a whopping 516 miles on a single charge, which is staggeringly higher than the German firm's readings.

Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance Specifications

When it comes to why the 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring is capable of such an incredible range, this is thanks to its 112 kWh 900 volt lithium-ion battery pack. This is one of the largest battery options in its class, which plays a big role in the model's ability to achieve such an incredible range on a single charge, despite a relatively high combined power output.

The Fiat 500E Is, Apparently, As Good As It Gets

The charming 500 is back, in electric form, but this time around, will Fiat manage to keep the sales up?

Don't Take The Fiat 500e On A Road-Trip

As per the ADAC's testing, the Fiat 500e Inspi(Red) should be right at the bottom of your list if you want an EV for long-distance travels, with a 93-mile range. This is no surprise to us, considering the EPA also hands it the same title for the U.S. region. This subcompact EV is designed for extra-urban use, boasting a single permanent-magnet motor that generates 115 horsepower and 162 pound-feet.

Fiat 500e Inspi(RED) Performance Specifications

As per the EPA-estimated energy consumption figures, the 500e returns a 116 MPGe or 29 kWh per 100 miles combined consumption estimate with a 149-mile range claim on standard tires. Once you fit all-season tires, the consumption worsens to 110 MPGe or 31 kWh per 100 miles with a 141-mile range estimate. Fiat only fits this model with a fairly compact 37 kWh, which explains the low range figure. The small capacity means it'll recover 10- to 80-percent of its charge in around 35 minutes.

Every EV You Can Buy With More Than 350 Miles Of Range Today

When it comes to electric vehicles, range is a make-it-or-break-it feature. Here are the electric models that have a range of more than 350 miles.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 Is The Most Efficient EV

The results of the tested vehicles in the ADAC Ecotest show how positive the range of electric cars has developed in recent years. In 2010, all electric vehicles reached an average range of 76 miles, making them suitable for everyday use in the U.S., which currently has an average 40-mile daily driving distance .

As of 2023, this average has increased to 244 miles. Larger, heavier vehicles typically consume more power, but the differences in consumption are noteworthy. The ADAC declares the Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Rear-Wheel Drive the most efficient EV option, partly thanks to its aerodynamically efficient exterior design. It achieves an impressive 15.5 kWh per 62 miles on the ADAC Ecotest. This is somewhat on par with the EPA's 25 kWh per 100 miles estimates. The Fiat 500e benefits from the second-best figure, with 23.8 kWh per 62 miles.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Performance Specifications

On the other hand, larger vehicles like the Citroën Spacetourer, and its counterparts like the Opel Zafira Life and Peugeot Traveller, consume much more energy, at around 30 kWh per 62 miles. None of these options are available in the U.S. The ADAC also indicates how an EV's shape and proportions plays a big influence on how much energy it consumes. The Hyundai Ioniq 6's 77.4 kWh battery covers 345 miles on a single charge, while the Ioniq 5 with the same battery covers 292 miles and returns an 18.2 kWh per 62-mile efficiency rating,

TopSpeed's Best Electric Car Of 2024: Hyundai IONIQ 6

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is one of the highest-range EVs on the market today, but that's not the only reason we've picked it as the best EV of 2024

The Current State Of Energy Losses While Charging

The ADAC highlights how important an EV's charging speed is when analyzing overall EV efficiency. Charging losses also occur during recharging, which means that your EV consumes more energy than the manufacturer claims. This happens primarily due to the onboard charging conversion of alternating current from the grid into direct current for battery storage, but you still have to pay for all the electricity from the socket. The ADAC factors these charging losses into their tests.

Unlike the on-board computer's consumption figures, the ADAC Ecotest and WLTP consumption specifications include charging losses. All vehicles in the ADAC tests are charged via a 22 kW wallbox under consistent temperatures, allowing them to take in the maximum charging power supported by their onboard chargers.

The differences between the energy required for a full charge and the net battery capacity are considerable. The BMW iX needs 120.2 kWh to fully charge its 105 kWh battery, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E requires 106.3 kWh for its 88 kWh battery. While charging losses account for much of this difference, other factors like battery age, preconditioning, tolerances, and temperature also play a role.

In the attraction, guests hop on board the tram, and Sally and Cruz Ramirez greet them and guide them through natural and mechanical wonders along the legendary Route 66. At first Cruz is very enthusiastic to see the whole thing, but Sally tells Cruz to relax and go slow. Then Cruz spots the World’s Biggest Lug-Nut with Lightning McQueen in it along with Guido and Luigi . Sally also tells Cruz that there are many attractions to enjoy, such as "The Ghost Garage", "The Copper Canyon Traffic Maze" and "Lonestone Magnet Mine". The tram then approaches the Car-tastrophe Canyon where a Dinoco Tanker Truck can been seen. Suddenly, the Canyon catches on fire and water sprays everywhere (similar to the former scene of the Catastrophe Canyon). Luckily, the tanker truck survives. Afterwards, Sally is reminded that Mater has been making his own art: a statue of him with McQueen and Doc Hudson made out of junk, The Great Whitewall of China and The Statue of Lizzie-ty. The tram passes Mater making a model of the Eiffel Tower, with Filmore very interested in Mater's masterpiece. As the tram arrives at the end of the ride, Cruz and Sally say goodbye to the riders and tell them to see the Route out there. Once the tram stops and the ride ends, guests make their departure.

The Real-Life Places Along Route 66 that Inspired Cars

The 2006 Pixar film Cars has quickly become a classic among boys and girls alike.  It’s heartwarming characters and messages about acceptance and community make it one of Pixar’s finest feel-good flicks.  What I didn’t realize, until this road trip, is just how much of the story of Radiator Springs is based on the real story of Route 66.

A LITTLE HISTORY

A little history lesson before we dive into an overview of my trip and recommendations for you as you hit the open road this summer.  Route 66 in its heyday (which lasted from the 1930s to the 1960s) was ALIVE.  It stretched all the way from Chicago to LA, was the way to travel to the west coast, and those who held various businesses along this essential thoroughfare became prosperous.  When Interstate 40 showed up in 1967 things slowly started to collapse for this once vibrant little highway. It was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985 and most places of business shuttered their doors forever. Sound familiar?

What does this mean for a Route 66 road trip today?  Well, it means that driving the original route all the way from Chicago to LA can’t really be done anymore… because it doesn’t exist.  What does exist are little pockets of the old route that are now deemed “National Scenic Byways”.  These areas are labeled with signs that say “Historic Route 66” and can be seen off of Interstate 40.  This is not at all what I expected but it did allow me to move through my stops more quickly than I would have been able to otherwise.

There are actually quite a few of these historic sections, between Kansas and Arizona, for curious road trippers to explore.  On my drive, I focused exclusively on the places that inspired Pixar’s Cars but there are lots of other famous places to visit if you want to make this a week and a half adventure.  I did not have enough time to do that so I had to pick and choose.

PLANNING YOUR OWN TRIP

Before I go over my itinerary, I am going to make a recommendation, especially for families with small children.  I would plan for at least 6 days to do this route.  I did mine in a total of 4 days and it was WAY too overly ambitious (even for me, a person who loves 8+ hour car rides).   If you plan on driving about 4 or 5 hours each day, then you’ll have time to really explore these places and chat with the interesting characters who keep them afloat.  That’s where the real memories are made.  I was lucky enough to have a few of those experiences but I definitely had to limit them because of the tight timeline I was under.

It may also be helpful to hold off on booking hotels until you’re on the road (if this is something you feel comfortable with).  Doing this will allow more flexibility in the schedule.  I booked my hotels in advance and was held to those reservations.  In each case, my reservation location wasn’t the most ideal place for me to spend the night.  I did my best to plan out how many hours I’d be on the road each day but it’s hard to predict just how much time you’ll spend in each location.

CARS-INSPIRED ITINERARY

Now for the meat and potatoes of this post: where to actually go.  The following locations were chosen after I’d read pretty much every article I could find on the making of this movie.  Some of these are more exciting than others, which I’ll call out below.  If you’re looking for your own resources to prepare for your trip, then you might want to check out “Route 66: The Mother Road” by Michael Wallis. This was the book that inspired John Lasseter to do his own exploratory trip down the famous road in preparation for the movie concept. (Michael Wallis also played tour guide to the Pixar crew and introduced them to the places and owners mentioned throughout this post).

Cars on the Route – Galena, Kansas

I began my road trip in Galena, Kansas at Cars on the Route.  This fully restored Kan-O-tex service station is home to the original truck that inspired the design of Tow Mater.  Since the release of the film, Cars on the Route has fully embraced their tie to the popular franchise, having acquired additional vehicles that look like characters from the film.  Inside you can purchase souvenirs and food, and if you’re lucky, you may even be able to chat with one of the four original owners of the shop.  Make sure to check the hours of operation (especially during the pandemic) before you go as they are not open every day.  I got the dates wrong and showed up on a day that they were not open but I was still able to see the cars out front.

cars road trip fermeture

Around the corner from the store is another homage to the film.  You can see a car that looks like Sheriff up on a pole, watching for speeders heading to Route 66.  There are also other fun murals and cardboard cut outs that could be fun for kids.

cars road trip fermeture

This stop is about 5 hours from the next, so depending on where you are coming from this may not be the most practical addition to your road trip.  If you definitely want to do this I would recommend making it the only Cars -related stop on that day.

Sandhill Curiosity Shop – Erick, Oklahoma

The next stop on my list was the Sandhill Curiosity Shop. This is a very famous location along Route 66.  And it’s not as much a “shop” as it is a museum of sorts.  Inside nothing is for sale but you can look through the many large collections of memorabilia that date back to the early 1900s and beyond.

cars road trip fermeture

Sandhill was purchased by Harley and Annabelle Russell in the late 80s and they spent their lifetimes collecting antiques that would add to the story of the place. Sandhill Curiosity Shop quickly became a must-see stop on Route 66, as much for the antiquities as for its owners’ unique personalities. There is even some speculation that Larry the Cable Guy based his accent for Mater on Harley’s. Sadly, Annabelle passed away from cancer in 2014 but Harley is still there, happy to greet visitors and entertain them with his songs and stories.

cars road trip fermeture

The shop doesn’t have set hours and I got really lucky because Harley saw me outside and came over to greet me.  If you want to make sure he’s there, I recommend calling Harley to let him know you’ll be coming (580-526-3738).

U-Drop Inn – Shamrock, Texas

Just past the Oklahoma/Texas border lies the U-Drop Inn.  This beautifully restored location was built in 1936 as a gas station and café for passersby traveling along the route. It was a stunning place known for its unusual art deco designs.  After the building fell into disrepair following the opening of Interstate 40, the city took possession of the building and submitted it for recognition as part of the National Register of Historic Places.

U-Drop Inn is said to have been the inspiration for some of the architecture in Radiator Springs, most notably Ramone’s body shop.  You can see the incredible resemblance, especially if you’ve been to Ramone’s in Disney’s California Adventure theme park.

cars road trip fermeture

(Also, if you happen to own a Tesla, it is home to a Tesla supercharging station).

The Big Texan & Cadillac Ranch – Amarillo, Texas

The next two stops are located near Amarillo.  The first was the Big Texas Steak Ranch.  This establishment is right off of I-40 and home to the very famous 72oz steak challenge (where patrons are given one hour to consume a 72oz steak + a slew of sides. If they eat it all, they get the meal for free along with lots of bragging rights. If they don’t, they pay $72.)

Outside of the Big Texan are several old Cadillacs and Buicks made famous by the large bullhorns attached to the front of their hoods.  These vehicles were said to be the inspiration for Tex Dinoco in the film.  (There is also an old western-themed motel right next door that reminded me a lot of the Hotel Cheyenne in Disneyland Paris, for those of you who are Disney parks “super fans”).

cars road trip fermeture

The second stop was Cadillac Ranch. This public art installation was created in the 1970s by a group of art students who were challenging the architectural norms of the day. It features 10 old Cadillacs that are buried into the ground.  Visitors are encouraged to purchase spray paint upon arrival (or bring your own) and to participate in the art of the cars by tagging them with their own graffiti.  This site too was visited by the Pixar team and is said to have inspired the rock formations that make up the backdrop to Radiator Springs.

cars road trip fermeture

Midpoint Café – Adrian, Texas

Halfway between Chicago and Los Angeles lies the famous Midpoint Café.  It was built in 1928 and is known as the oldest continuously operating café along Route 66 from Amarillo to Tucumcari.

Not only was this the actual midpoint along Route 66 but it’s also served as the inspiration for Flo’s. Flo’s character was based on former owner Fran Houser, and many aspects of the café also served as inspiration for her café in the film. Fran sold Midpoint café in 2012 but is still known to visit quite frequently.  Who knows, you might just run into her on your trip!

Tucumcari Mountain & Blue Swallow Motel – Tucumcari, New Mexico

The next town to stop at along your Cars -inspired adventure is Tucumcari in New Mexico.  When you pull of I-40, you can’t miss Tucumcari Mountain.  This was the inspiration for the mountain behind Radiator Springs.  If you look very closely, you can see a “T” painted on the hillside of the mountain.  This is where the “RS” came from in the movie.

cars road trip fermeture

Further into Tucumcari, you will find the Blue Swallow Motel.  Founded in 1939, this quaint roadside stop is still fully functioning and an excellent option for those looking for accommodations along the way. Granted the “Travelers’ Choice” Award in both 2016 and 2018 by Trip Advisor, the Blue Swallow really is a little oasis in the desert.  (In hindsight I wish I would have spent the night here.)  The neon signage at the Blue Swallow Motel helped inform Pixar animators as they created much of the signage throughout Radiator Springs, most notably the “100% Refrigerated Air” outside of the Cozy Cone Motel.

cars road trip fermeture

66 Diner – Albuquerque, New Mexico

It is a LONG haul from Tucumcari to Arizona where the remainder of the stops lie.  To break-up the journey, I stopped at the 66 Diner in Albuquerque, New Mexico which is said to have inspired the stainless steel décor of Flo’s Café.  Stepping inside the diner, I felt like I was stepping inside Flo’s in Disney’s California Adventure.  The resemblances are uncanny.

cars road trip fermeture

I would most definitely recommend taking the time to eat here as well.  The food was OUTSTANDING.  I had the Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas and the 66 Diner Pink Cadillac (which is basically a strawberry shake with Oreos), and quite frankly, I wish Flo’s would start serving these.  At the time of writing this article, New Mexico was strictly enforcing their mask wearing policies and the 66 Diner took every one of the CDC’s health precautions. They not only required you to wear masks until you got to your table but also carefully sat patrons very far apart.  I was the only person seated in my entire section.  If you still don’t feel comfortable dining in, you can also order your food to go.

cars road trip fermeture

Yellowhorse Trading Post – Lupton, Arizona

If you’re short on time, you can skip this next stop which can easily be seen as you drive along I-40 anyway.  The Yellowhorse Trading Post is a famous souvenir stop along Route 66 and used to be located in an alcove similar to the one that the Wheel Well Motel in the film was in. Ironically enough, (prior to McQueens heroic performance at the Piston Cup, if you’re a fan of the film), both this fiction location and the real one, seemed to have fallen on hard times.

cars road trip fermeture

Wigwam Motel – Holbrook, Arizona

The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook is actually part of a larger chain known as the Wigwam Villages that were quite popular in the 30s and 40s, and served as the inspiration for the design of the Cozy Cone Motel in Cars .  While there are very few of these motels left in existence, the one in Holbrook has been carefully preserved as part of the National Park Services program. It’s located very close to the Petrified Forest National Park and could be an interesting option for accommodations if you want to take your visit to the next level.  You’ll need to make advanced reservations if you want to spend the night in one of these teepee’s, however.

cars road trip fermeture

Side Note: If you have the time, check out the Petrified Forest. It is a unique National Park and there are lots of great family friendly things to do within it.

Jack Rabbit Trading Post – Joseph City, Arizona

Next up for me was the Jack Rabbit Trading Post located in Joseph City.  This convenience store was founded in 1949 and quickly became famous for a series of billboards featuring the silhouette of a jack rabbit that stretched from Missouri to Arizona and ended outside the trading post with a large sign that read “Here It Is”.  Instead of a jack rabbit, Pixar animators created their own version using the silhouette of a 1923 Ford, which also happens to be the body of “Lizzie” from the film.

cars road trip fermeture

Meteor City Trading Post – Winslow, Arizona

While the exit for Meteor City does still exist off of I-40, the once booming trading post has unfortunately fallen into disrepair, being abandoned and left to vandals in 2012.  Meteor City began as a gas station in the 1930s but gained popularity when its famous dome was built in 1979.  The geometric design of the building influenced the design of Fillmore’s Trading Post in the film.

This location also used to be home to the “World’s Longest Map of Route 66” which was painted by famed Route 66 advocate Bob Waldmire, who was also the inspiration behind the character of Fillmore.  (Waldmire drove a 1972 Volkswagen Microbus).  Sadly, due to the deteriorating condition of this stop, the map is no longer visible but there is hope to be had!  The site was recently purchased by a couple from Indiana who are planning to restore the location.

cars road trip fermeture

Havasu Falls – Havasu Falls, Arizona

While not located along the route itself, Havasu Falls is only a short distance from Flagstaff. Here you’ll find the famous waterfall in the Grand Canyon that inspired the one that Lightning McQueen and Sally admire during their tour of the countryside.  This same waterfall is one of the crowning features of the Radiator Springs Racers ride in Disney’s California Adventure.  Havasu Falls is not currently open for visitors but I imagine that restrictions will start lifting at various National Parks as we continue to move into the summer.

cars road trip fermeture

Hackberry General Store – Kingsman, Arizona

Speaking of Waldmire, he is responsible for re-opening the next stop in this itinerary. In 1992 as part of his efforts to restore Route 66 and bring attention to forgotten towns, Waldmire purchased the general store and turned it into an information center for tourists.  In its prime, Hackberry was a service station but like many establishments, with the opening of Interstate 40, it ceased to exist, all along with all business in this tiny town of less than 100 residents.  Hackberry General Store (in addition to Sandhill Curiosity Shop) served as inspiration for Lizzie’s general store in Radiator Springs. You can see similarities between the two, especially when it comes to the vintage gas pumps.

cars road trip fermeture

Oatman Highway & Sitgreaves Pass – Oatman, Arizona

Last on the list is Oatman, Arizona.  Oatman got its start as a gold mining town and over time transitioned into a rest stop along Route 66 after the gold dried up. Today Oatman is all but a ghost town, holding onto much of its western heritage.  The wild burros that roam freely through the streets were said to have inspired the mini tractors that roam the streets of Radiator Springs in the film.

cars road trip fermeture

The final stop along our journey is Sitgreaves Pass which provided inspiration for the beautiful landscapes that McQueen and Sally drive through in their scene outside of Radiator Springs. That said, there are in fact many areas of Arizona that are reminiscent of the nature surrounding Radiator Springs so you don’t necessarily need to drive through Sitgreaves Pass to feel those vibes.

IN CONCLUSION

That concludes my overview of the stops along Route 66 that inspired Cars . I hope you found this post helpful.  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to include in the comments section or email me directly. Boasting an impressive 168 passengers per ride vehicle, this is an attraction which will see thousands upon thousands of guests per day.

The ride is split into 3 unique areas :

First stop: A nutty roadside attraction – Snap a pic and don’t forget to wave to Lightning (Flash) McQueen, Luigi, and Guido at the World’s Largest Lugnut. Second stop: Power shower!  There’s nothing like a natural carwash in a flash flood for some extra shower power. See how a huge water tanker likes to shake up his cleaning routine in Cars-tastrophe Canyon. Final Stop: An Artistic Mater-piece!  Mater is well known for his impressive junkyard creations. Today he’s debuting his latest Mater-piece– can you guess what it is? Honk if you love this motor monument!

There are so many photo opportunities & sights to see that this leisurely road trip is one you will want to do time & time again. Get ready to witness “The Ghost Garage”, “Copper Canyon Traffic Maze”, “Lonestone Magnet Mine”, “The Eiffuel Tower”, “The Great Whitewall of China” & ” The Statue of Lizziety” !

Cars Road Trip Tips The best view of each scene is from the very centre of the tram but you may need to ask a cast member if you specifically want to be seated here. This attraction can have fairly high wait times throughout the day but if there is a parade on or the seated shows around Disney Studios are about to start you can get on much quicker. Very young children who will not appreciate large bursts of fire or heavy waterfall effects  should be seated away from the edge of the tram.

How long does a roundtrip take? Is it considerably shorter than the Studio Tram Tour?

It is shorter than the original tram tours. I would say around half as long with tram tours taking around 12 mins & the new road trip only around 6 minutes. There is of course only one scene now (calamity canyon) & we have lost the London scene & some road, scenery etc.

Sell my car, car research, sign in, how to plan an ev road trip.

If you're yearning to hit the open road in your EV, a little planning and vehicle prep can go a long way.

QuickTakes:

  • Use apps for your next EV road trip
  • How far and where you can travel in an EV
  • Other considerations when planning an EV road trip

Thanks to longer driving ranges and a vast increase in charging opportunities — even in rural communities — electric-vehicle range anxiety  gives way to a "go for it" attitude regarding EV road-tripping. EV owners can comfortably plan longer journeys by using route-planning apps and fast-charging stations, and by adjusting their driving habits.

Use Apps for Your Next EV Road Trip

The latest EVs, such as the Lucid Air luxury sedan, can offer more than 500 miles of range, making an extended voyage feasible. Tesla's proprietary Supercharger network  can also assist with long-distance trips.

If you own a non-Tesla EV, you may have a preferential arrangement or subscription with one of the major charging networks, such as ChargePoint , Electrify America , EVgo , and others. Their respective apps may help determine the availability of charging stations along your road trip route.

Today's EV charging network is somewhat scattered across the country. To accurately measure how far you can travel before recharging, enter your destination on a trip-planning app, such as A Better Routeplanner or ChargeHub , and get a detailed overview of where to stop and charge and for how long.

Alternatively, EVHotels lists accommodations that also feature overnight charging stations.

Another favorite crowd-sourced app is PlugShare , which will allow you to plan a trip and see every charger along your route.

Google Maps is also gradually improving its capabilities to help with EV road trips, highlighting routes with faster chargers.

How Far and Where I Can Travel in My EV

Once you've picked a route, the fundamental limitations are the range of your vehicle and the availability of higher-speed charging opportunities. You'll have to contend with the issues related to the increasing popularity of EVs, starting with busy charging stations. There may be other challenges, too, such as the unreliable nature of more than a half-dozen competing EV charging companies and various still-emerging technologies.

When driving in remote areas, be aware that charging stations sometimes require cell phone service to activate those apps and initiate a charge.

While Tesla owners can benefit from access to the company's widespread Supercharger and Destination Chargers network, the automaker has begun to offer limited charging access to owners of non-Tesla EVs.

Other Considerations When Planning an EV Road Trip

New EV hardware and technologies, such as heat pumps and ever-improving batteries , are helping to make longer road trips more reliable and convenient year-round. But weather can still be a major factor in how far you may or may not be able to drive your EV.

If you head out in the middle of a freezing winter, colder temperatures can decrease the total range of your EV by as much as 30% or more. Running your EV's heater and accessories to stay comfortable during your trip can drastically reduce your total range. Similarly, high temperatures can strain your EV's systems and charging capabilities in the summer. See if you can charge in a shaded area and run your air conditioner.

You'll also achieve a more extended driving range in an EV or a traditional gas-powered car by properly inflating your tires , as lower tire pressures can reduce driving ranges.

Asking Eric: Road trips are lonely for driver whose co-pilot would rather scroll than chat

  • Published: Sep. 09, 2024, 1:00 p.m.

R. Eric Thomas

R. Eric Thomas writes “Asking Eric,” a daily advice column from the bestselling author. NJ Advance Media

  • R. Eric Thomas

DEAR ERIC: I have recently noticed a disturbing trend during road trips with my wife of more than 30 years. As we visit our college-age children at their campus, we regularly face car rides of three hours or more. I willingly drive, and that’s my wife’s preference as well, although she would take a shift without issue.

After a short time, she will retreat to her phone. I will try to continue a conversation, but I will get short answers and no attempt at real participation. We have a great marriage, and communication is not an issue, nor is phone use a problem during other moments.

I get that she is trying to make a boring car ride go quickly; and I don’t need help staying awake, navigating or maintaining concentration on the road. I will inevitably put on a podcast or music and life goes on. However, I find myself annoyed and think the behavior is slightly rude. I feel there is an unwritten rule that if you ride “shotgun”, your role is to engage with the driver. Am I off base here?

– Lonely Driver

DEAR DRIVER: Ah, shotgun. The vice president of the car. A hallowed position, ruling over the music, the navigation, but never the air-conditioning. As with any other vice presidency, the role of shotgun is what you make it. Personally, I appreciate occasional navigation help but prefer to choose the music myself. If you want your wife’s engagement, ask for it. That said, if you’re just as happy putting on a podcast, let the unwritten rules go and consider these college car trips down time with low stakes. A Camp David for shotguns, if you will.

Ultimate Guide: How to Prepare Your Car for Safe & Stress-Free Road Trip

GoMechanic

A car road trip is an adventure even before reaching the destination. A road trip can turn a delightful memory from planning to execution, provided your car is in top condition to hit the roads. Whether it is a weekend getaway or a long-distance adventure, preparation keeps you ready for anything coming your way. This guide will be a checklist for essential steps to make your car road trip ready.

1. Vehicle Maintenance for Long Trips

Maintenance-fro-long-trips

Before tagging along for the road trip, conduct a thorough maintenance check on the vehicle. Ensuring your car is well maintained will minimise any chance of unexpected breakdowns.

  • Engine Oil & Fluids : Inspect fluid levels and quality. Top up or replace the engine oil if necessary. Never forget about coolant and windshield washer fluid.
  • Brakes & Tyres : Brake pads and rotors should be in optimal condition. Account for tyre pressure and tread depth. Consider replacing the tyres if you experience a loose tyre grip.
  • Check Suspension & Alignment : Ensure optimal alignment of your vehicle’s suspension for a smooth ride and better control of your vehicle. Consider any unusual vibrations or noises and get your suspension checked.
  • Inspect Belts & Hoses : Look out for any wear or cracks in the engine belts. Timely Replacement can prevent roadside emergencies.
  • Lights & Indicators : Test all vehicle lights for optimal functioning, ensuring proper visibility on the road.
  • Wipers & Windshield : Prepare the windshields and wiper blades for an efficient cleaning every time as a clear frontal and mirror view of the road is essential for safe driving.
  • Air Conditioning : Experiencing exhausting congested roads is a given during long trips. Consider getting the car’s air conditioning system serviced and AC filters cleaned for efficient functioning.
  • Battery Check : If your vehicle seldom comes out on roads, look out for battery condition and signs of corrosion.

2. Consider Road Trip Safety

Road-trip-safety

Prioritize safety, particularly when you’re on the road. Some tips to consider are:

  • Carry Emergency Kits : Pack a well-stocked first aid kit and an emergency car kit and include essential tools, a hydraulic jack, and jumper cables. Ensure the spare tyre is ready to be used in any unexpected situations.

Must See: Modern Car Safety: Top Features

  • Prepare Documents & Insurance : Put together all necessary documents including driving license, RTO papers, and insurance papers.

3. Preparing for a Long Car Journey

Prep-for-Long-Journey

Some extra preparation can sure come in handy while ensuring a comfortable car road trip.

  • Comfort & Entertainment : Long confined hours in vehicles turn dull quickly. Packing essentials, snacks, and water and preparing something for entertainment is beneficial.
  • Fuel Consideration : Consider beginning the journey with a full tank. If one plans to travel through remote areas, keep fuel stations in mind.

Preparing for a road trip might seem like a tedious process. But when it comes to car preparations, an average maintenance checklist will get one through ensuring a comfortable and safe journey. Keep in mind that a well-prepared car is the core of an enjoyable road trip. Take the time to get everything off the road trip preparation checklist before you leave for your adventure.
