Amboseli & Masai Mara Budget Safari By 4x4 Jeep Tour

Amboseli & Masai Mara Budget Safari By 4x4 Jeep

I am really glad we did the best African safari for family provided by Voyage Kenya Tanzania Safari. Kenya and Tanzania were such beautiful countries. Our Kenya safari tour operator and director Mr. John was wonderful. The 4-star luxury lodges in Masai Mara and Serengeti were beyond expectation with great activities for kids of all ages.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

7 Days Kenya mid range Joining Safari Tour

7 Days Kenya mid range Joining Safari

We hired a vehicle and driver through John, CKC, both organized by John. We booked the service before leaving Australia. John maintained contact with us throughout. He was able to secure our driver/guide, George, who was fantastic. The vehicle was very comfortable. We visited Tsavo East, on a private tour, quite a drive away from Nairobi. We considered a self-drive, but very pleased we didn't. George was amazing in the madness of Kenyan highway driving. We'd have no hesitation in recommending CKC and John if you are considering a private tour of Kenya. Excellent value for money.

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa Tour

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

AndBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Kenya is located in East Africa and encompasses classic savannah, mountain highlands, colourful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and pristine coral reefs. The Masai Mara is world renowned for the “ Great Mammal Migration ” and sightings of the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). The soda lake known as Lake Nakuru lights up with pink flamingos, whilst the Amboseli National Park offers sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. Kenya is home to Africas second highest mountain, whilst the Tsavo and Samburu game reserves offer rewarding safari experiences. Kenya boasts unforgettable bush and beach vacations with destinations such as Diani Beach providing the perfect setting for some well-deserved relaxation.

Kenya is a year-round destination for both safari and beach holidays.

The main tourist seasons tie in with the rainfall patterns: the biggest influxes of visitors are in December – January and July – August .

Dry-season travel has a number of advantages, not least of which is the greater visibility of wildlife as animals are concentrated along the diminishing watercourses. July to September is probably the best period, overall, for game-viewing, with early September almost certain to coincide with the annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.

October, November, and March are the months with the clearest seas for snorkeling and diving. In the long rains, the mountain parks are occasionally closed, as the muddy tracks are undrivable. But the rainy seasons shouldn’t deter travel unduly: the rains usually come only in short afternoon or evening cloudbursts, and the landscape is strikingly green and fresh even if the skies may be cloudy. There are bonuses, too: fewer other tourists, reduced prices and often perfect light for photography.

Renowned for its classic savanna safaris, Kenya is a beautiful country with deserts, alpine snows, forests, open plains, colorful tribal cultures, freshwater lakes and coral reefs. The wildlife safaris have always been the top attraction in Kenya. This huge wilderness is home to the most impressive wildlife spectacle on earth; The great migration. The great migration is a pilgrimage of millions of wildebeest and zebra in search of new pastures. The herds are followed by vast numbers of predators, including lions, hyenas and cheetahs. Other activities to be experienced in Kenya include trekking Mount Kenya, ballooning over the Masai Mara and snorkeling in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast.

Masai Mara National Park

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the top tourist attractions in Kenya and the country’s most popular game park. Each year the Masai Mara National Reserve is visited by thousands of tourists who come here to watch the exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest. The “Great Migration” takes place every year from July to October when millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a relatively small park located close to the Tanzania border at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and hundreds of bird species. ‘Must do’ attractions in the Amboseli National Park include meeting the Maasai people and witnessing the spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is just a short drive from the center of Nairobi with only a fence separating the park’s wildlife from the metropolis. It is the only national park in the world to be found within the precincts of a capital city. Nairobi’s skyscrapers can be seen from the park. Despite its proximity to the city and the relatively small size of the park, Nairobi National Park boasts a large and varied wildlife population including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded.

Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay, in southeastern Kenya. It sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts.Malindi provides a very nice introduction to the coastal tourist attractions in Kenya with its extensive coral reefs and beautiful beaches. There are surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and other water sports. The Malindi Marine National Park and nearby Watamu Marine National Park have protected areas with beautiful beaches, clear water, turtles and very colorful fish. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve harbors elephants and more than 200 species of birds.

Mombasa is Kenya's main tourist destination. It is on the eastern coastline of Kenya, bordering the Indian Ocean which has made it a popular destination for its beaches. Mombasa is a place where both history and progress are greatly valued, where a busy harbor existence is lived at its own unique, tropical pace. Mombasa offers a diverse marine life, world-class hotels, and friendly atmosphere. There is a tropical climate all year and it is a great destination filled with activities for all ages.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The mountain is an awe-inspiring sight and is often referred to as the ‘Place of Light’. Its ragged series of peaks are crowned with snow, and its slopes are covered with forest. The 5199 meter (17,057 ft) high summit is a difficult technical climb, several lowers peaks, however, are an easy destination for any fit trekker. The majority of animals live lower down on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Here there is more vegetation and the climate is less extreme. Various species of monkeys, several antelopes, tree hyrax, porcupines and some larger animals such as elephant and buffalo all live in the forest.

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a very peaceful national park in Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It attracts wildlife because of the Uaso Nyiro River that runs through it and the mixture of forest and grassland vegetation. All three big cats, lion, cheetah and leopard, can be found here, as well as elephants, buffalo and hippos. The Uaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of Nile crocodile. Samburu also offers a sublime birding experience.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is a small park named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It is unique among Kenya’s wildlife parks, as you are allowed to walk or cycle without a guide. There’s dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, gorges and basalt columns. The national park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, though many are few in number. Examples of little-seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Lamu Island

Lamu Island is a part of Kenya’s Lamu Archipelago and has managed to stay unspoiled and untouched by the mass tourism that has hit much of Kenya’s coastline. As the oldest living town in Kenya, Lamu Town has retained all the charm and character built up over centuries. There are no roads on Lamu Island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya and in the world. Due to its size, the park was divided into Tsavo West and Tsavo East. The Tsavo West has spectacular scenery with a rolling volcanic landscape while Tsavo East has more open savannah than its western sibling. Tsavo National Park is the ideal destination in Kenya for people who seek solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore the wilderness. The park is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust-red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is a very shallow lake in central Kenya. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts vast quantities of flamingos, sometimes more than one million at once. Often called the greatest bird spectacle on earth, the flamingos are one of Kenya’s top attractions. Visitors can enjoy the wide ecological diversity and varied habitats that range from Lake Nakuru itself to the surrounding escarpment and picturesque ridges. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching, hiking, and game drives.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

7-Day Kenya Safari Tours

If you’re looking at booking a 7-day Kenya safari, you’re in for a treat. Kenya is a highly rewarding destination for an African safari. The ever-changing landscapes of Kenya’s parks and reserves teem with animals. The well-established tourism industry caters to all kinds of visitors, from budget-conscious backpackers to people looking for an all-inclusive fly-in safari. While wildlife is the main drawing card, visitors are always enchanted by the openness and warmth of the Kenyan people. The country is home to a melting pot of cultures. The traditional Maasai of the interior have little in common with the Swahili coastal inhabitants, but you’ll find that all the people go out of their way to make your stay memorable.

6 Questions About 7-Day Kenya Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

kenya safari trip

Is 7 days enough time for a Kenya trip?

“You can see plenty on a 1-week safari in Kenya. How long you should spend on safari depends on your priorities. I would say that longer is always better. There are a lot of parks and reserves in Kenya, and you probably won’t be able to visit all of them in one trip. So you’ll have to build a holiday around the number of days available. To make it a success, resist the temptation to cram too much into it. When comparing itineraries, don’t assume that those covering the most ground are better or give you more for your money. On the contrary, I would recommend spending more quality time in a few places, rather than driving or flying around too much. If you move lodge every day, a lot of your wildlife viewing will be done en route, which is seldom as productive as going on a dedicated game drive.”

How much will this safari cost?

“You can expect a starting price of US$750 per person for a 7-day shared camping tour, going up to at least US$1500 per person for a mid-range private tour. The sky is the limit for luxury tours, but they start at around US$2000 per person. Keep in mind that there are a lot of factors that determine the cost of a safari in Kenya. The most budget-friendly option is to join a group camping tour. These are a lot of fun and you get to stay inside some of Africa’s best parks and reserves for a fraction of the price of a lodge safari. There are, however, some lovely accommodation options to choose from, and staying in safari lodges can be part of the experience. There are lodges in different price brackets offering varying levels of luxury and comfort. Most popular is mid-range accommodation at competitive prices. At the higher end of the scale are fly-in safaris, where you get flown between destinations in small aircraft. Not only does this save you from wasting valuable time in transit, but it also gives you a chance to get an eagle-eye perspective on the beautiful landscapes. Whether you’re going for a mid-range or luxury tour, you should consider traveling out of high season. You’ll probably get a better deal at this time, the scenery is lusher and the parks are less busy. Be warned, though, that the low season corresponds with the rains, and animal spotting might be more difficult. Once you’ve narrowed down your priorities, get a few quotes before making a final decision.”

What are the options to extend my 7-day Kenya safari?

“There are several options to extend a 7-day safari in Kenya. While wildlife viewing on the open savannah might be your main incentive to come to Kenya, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to extend your time in the region. You’ll probably fly into Nairobi to start your safari from there. This is, in fact, one of Africa’s main transport hubs, and many of East Africa’s other highlights are just a short plane hop away. A very popular add-on is a gorilla trek in Rwanda. Looking one of our closest relatives in the eye is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These gentle giants live in Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. Other activities on offer here include volcano hikes, golden monkey tracking and a caving expedition. Serious hikers might want to bag a peak before heading back home. The main contenders are Mt Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain, or Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa’s highest mountain. Although less known, the stunningly scenic Mt Kenya is arguably the most challenging of the two and is definitely less crowded. If you’re in need of some relaxation, you can head to Kenya’s beautiful coastline or Zanzibar in neighboring Tanzania. Both have many beach resorts and smaller boutique hotels to choose from. Alternatively, to really get away from it all, you can fly to Mauritius or the Seychelles for pure island bliss.”

Where should I go on a 7-day safari in Kenya?

“As there are so many amazing parks and reserves in Kenya, you might have a difficult time deciding where to go on a 7-day safari. The good news is that you can’t go far wrong. You’ll have a great time wherever you choose to go. Most well-known is the Masai Mara National Reserve. The wildlife viewing is superb and if you time your visit well, you have a chance of seeing the great migration. To get away from the crowds, consider staying in the exclusive Mara North Conservancy. Also not to be missed is Amboseli National Park. You can see most African megafauna here, but it’s the elephants that really steal the show. Lone bulls carrying impressive tusks and big breeding herds can be seen on their daily traverse over dusty plains to the swamps. On a clear day, you’ll catch them in front of Mt Kilimanjaro for that perfect photo. Another favorite is Lake Nakuru National Park, a convenient stop en route to the Masai Mara NR. Not only is the park teeming with wildlife, most notably rhinos and tree-climbing lions, it also protects a large Rift Valley lake and big flocks of flamingos, pelicans and other aquatic birds. An off-the-beaten-track option, feasible on a 7-day safari, is to head to Kenya’s arid north. The twin national reserves of Samburu and Buffalo Springs offer great viewing of elephant and leopard, as well as many dry-country animals not found further south, such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk.”

What is the best time of the year for a trip in Kenya?

“The best time of the year for a safari in Kenya is the Dry season, from late June to October. At this time animals are attracted to remaining water sources and are therefore easier to find. Having said that, wildlife viewing is quite good throughout the year. Traveling in the Wet season, from November to March, has its benefits too. It’s a beautiful time of the year, when everything is green and lush, and the air is free of dust. Furthermore, the parks and reserves are less busy at this time and you might be able to take advantage of low-season specials. April and May are the wettest months, and best avoided. Indeed, some safari lodges close over this period. For a chance to see the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara NR, you need to time your visit carefully. The herds cross from Tanzania into the Mara sometime in September and they leave the area in October. The exact timing varies every year as the wildebeest follow the rains.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“You’ll be able to see many different species on a 7-day safari in Kenya. The variety of wildlife in Kenya is just phenomenal. You’ll probably have a bucket list with all the usual suspects including the Big Five. You’ll see most, if not all, of them as well as many other animals you didn’t even know about. Exactly which animals you’re likely to see depends on where you go. Even then, animals move around, and every day is different. There are no guaranteed sightings. Many parks and reserves in Kenya offer a good chance to see elephant, buffalo, zebra and giraffe. Some of the parks are great for big cats too. The Masai Mara NR is considered the best for this. To see rhino, either go to Lake Nakuru NP or one of the reserves on the Laikipia Plateau. Wildlife densities are lower in Tsavo East and West National Parks, but this vast wilderness area is home to the Big Five. Here you have a chance to see localized dry-country specials, such as the endangered fringe-eared oryx. ”

Culture and customs.

Kenya is one of Africa’s most multicultural countries, with a population as diverse as its terrain. There are more than 40 different ethnic tribes, each with their own language, culture, and customs. The red-robed, beaded Maasai of the south are undoubtedly the most famous tribespeople of the region. The unique Swahili culture dominates the coastal regions and Islam is quite common in the North. Nairobi is home to a large swirl of humanity, with significant Indian, African, and Western populations. As a result, you’re likely to see mosques, churches, and temples, taste international cuisine from all over the world and hear the sounds of Kenyan hip-hop, traditional African drumming, and Western pop.

Depending on where you are in Kenya, the culture and customs vary according to the area you are visiting. The northern and coastal regions tend to be more traditional, while Nairobi, as an international hub of trade and commerce, tends to be more liberal. The Maasai and other tribes typically lead pastoral lives based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Their daily life is based on centuries of tradition and if you get the chance to visit a tribal village, you’ll be able to see the customs of these fascinating people firsthand. Traditional clothing, dance, song, and ceremonies keep this proud culture alive in the face of modernization, which is sweeping through the country.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

As a multiracial society, Kenya has many different cuisines for travelers to try. From traditional Swahili cuisine to Indian, European, and Middle Eastern food, many cultures are represented, especially in large cities like Nairobi. While the average Kenyan lives mostly on maize, beans, and vegetables, tourist areas and large cities offer much more variety for visitors.

Things to eat in Kenya

Kenya’s coastal areas, such as Mombasa and Lamu, are the best places to feast on fresh crab, lobster, oysters, and kingfish cooked to perfection in sumptuous spices.

2. Nyama Choma

One strictly for the carnivores, Nyama Choma is a popular Kenyan style of cooking and eating meat. Goat, beef, and chicken are roasted and served on a communal cutting board, sometimes with condiments such as chili, salt, chopped tomatoes, and avocado.

With a significant population hailing from India, Kenya is a great place to savor spicy curries made with an East African twist.

4. Tropical fruit

For a cheap and cost-effective snack, head to the market stalls that sell a colorful array of tropical fruit. Pineapples, papayas, bananas, and passionfruit are usually plentiful in Kenya. Any fruit that you can peel is a more hygienic, easy option than the one you have to wash.

Geography and environment

Kenya is located in East Africa, sharing borders with   Ethiopia , Somalia, Sudan,   Tanzania   , and   Uganda . With a diverse topography, Kenya has a wide variety of terrain – lofty mountains, dense rainforest, stark plains, and soft-sand beaches.

This diversity also applies to the environments that Kenya’s people live in. Kenya’s crowded capital is a heaving melange of cars, buses, skyscrapers, street stalls, markets, and people; the idyllic Loita Hills is the heart of Maasai country; the national parks run wild with exotic creatures; and rustic Lamu Island is a car-free piece of living history. Overall, most Kenyans either live a fast-paced existence in the modern metropolis of Nairobi or a quieter, agricultural-based life in Kenya’s rural towns and villages.

History and government

Early history.

Recent archaeological findings in Kenya have revealed the remains of one of the earliest species of hominid, placing Kenya among the first places inhabited by humans. Before the arrival of outsiders, Kenya was inhabited by nomadic tribes who most likely entered Kenya from the north. The Maasai and the Kikuyu were the most dominant in numbers, although the Maasai were well known for their reputation as strong warriors who often raided their neighbors.

During the 19th century, Kenya came under the influence of outside cultures due to the arrival of traders from the Middle East and Asia, and settlers and missionaries from Europe. Britain and Germany both had vested interests in Kenya for its abundance of natural resources (especially ivory) and because it was an important point for trade. As such, settlers from Britain, Germany, and other European nations flooded into the country in large numbers, setting up agricultural empires such as coffee plantations. These plantations relied heavily on local tribespeople for labor, much to the resentment of the indigenous populations. As a result of this, a large number of Indian laborers were brought to Kenya to work on plantations and build railroads. This Indian influence is reflected in the current population of Kenya.

Recent history

After much infighting, confrontation, uprising, and reform, Kenya was granted its independence from British colonial rule in 1963. The “Mau Mau Uprising” of the 1950s was responsible for drawing attention to the plight of the African population, and was also the catalyst for the change in how Kenya is governed.

The 1970s saw Kenya’s international economic profile grow due to the successful development of a free-market economy, with agriculture and tourism creating more a more stable economy. More recently, Kenya’s tourism industry has continued to develop and flourish, mainly due to its wealth of exotic animals, national parks, coastal hot-spots and unique cultures. Standards of living have also improved in Kenya, with an overall improvement in life expectancy, infant mortality, and fertility rates – probably due to the increased investment in family planning, education, and health by both the Kenyan government and NGOs. Despite this, many Kenyans still live below the poverty line and struggle to provide the bare necessities for themselves and their children. Regardless of this, travelers will be touched by the generosity of spirit and genuine hospitality that Kenyans display to visitors.

Top 10 wildlife encounters in Kenya

1. cheetah chase.

The cheetah, the Ferrari of the animal kingdom, is the fastest land animal on the planet. This slick predator can reach speeds of up to 120 km/hr and can accelerate to 103km/hr in just three seconds. Seeing a cheetah stealthily stalk, then pursue, a gazelle, springbok or an impala is a thrilling sight.

Spot the speedy cheetah on our 7 day Premium Kenya adventure.

2. Lioness kill

See the circle of life play out in Masai Mara National Reserve. Lions might be the kings of the jungle, but in Kenya, it's the lionesses that do the hunting. Working in groups, these big cats track down prey such as wildebeest, impalas, zebras and buffalo. If you are lucky, you will see a kill - the lionesses hunting together, encircling a herd then targeting the closest animal. The attack is swift and powerful - an experience you will never forget!

Watch the lioness in her natural habitat on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Tanzania tour.

3. Wildebeest migration

The annual migration of 1.5 million wildebeest across the grassy plains of Eastern Africa is an extraordinary spectacle of nature. The wildebeests risk drowning in rivers and attacks from big cats and crocodiles, to travel nearly 2,000 km in search of food and water. Around 200,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle also join this boisterous group each year, making it one of the greatest shows on earth.

Witness the wildebeest migration on our 8 day Kenya Wildlife Safari.

4. Sea of flamingos

See Lake Nakuru turn a shimmering sea of pink as millions of flamingos flock to feed in the shallow waters. The sheer amount of these long-legged creatures - among 400 species of birds that inhabit the area - is an incredible sight.

Marvel at flamingos on our 15 day Masai Heartlands adventure.

5. Elephant bath time

Elephants love water and, despite their size, they are excellent swimmers. To cool off from the scorching African sun, they splash about in lakes, paddle in rivers and give themselves a shower using their trunks. Witnessing these gentle giants having a bath is a truly memorable experience, but don't stand too close or you'll likely get very wet.

Catch a spray from elephants on our 13 day Premium Uganda, Rwanda & Kenya tour.

6. Rhino love

A baby rhino stays by its mother's side for up to five years after it is born and, during this time, mom is extremely protective of her calf. With an adult white rhino weighing up to 3,600 kg and reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h when charging, you don't want to get between a mother rhino and her baby. The best place for spotting the rare black rhino is Kenya's Aberdare National Park.

Snap some photos of these fascinating creatures on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa Highlights tour.

7. Giraffe parade

It's the classic African image – giraffes striding across the African savanna at sunset, nibbling on acacia trees and carving a graceful silhouette on the orange-tinged skyline. Kenya has the biggest giraffe population on the continent, so a dusk safari to see these unique creatures is a must.

Look up at Kenya's giraffe population on our 8 day Kenya Family Safari.

8. Hippos wallowing

One of Africa's best locations for hippo spotting is Lake Naivasha. Here, you can see large pods of these mighty animals submerged in the water and wallowing in mud. More than just social interaction, the water helps them cool down and protects their skin from drying out. With the exception of feeding, hippos spend most of their lives in the water - from childbirth and reproduction to fighting with other hippos - so it's very likely you'll see them playing in their aquatic playground.

Watch hippos playing in the water on our 31 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa In Depth tour.

9. Zebra crossing

For many, the highlight of the annual zebra migration is hundreds of thousands of these black-and-white-striped animals making the death-defying dash across the Mara River. Vulnerable to massive crocodiles lying in wait for a tasty meal, the zebras don't waste any time once they decide to take the plunge.

Admire these majestic animals on our 20 day Best of East Africa tour.

10. Monkey business

That chatter from the treetops above is most likely from cheeky colobus monkeys. As these creatures spend nearly all of their lives in the forest canopy, your best chance of spotting them is as they dart through the trees, a flurry of black and white fur. Treating branches like trampolines, they leap high into the air, then drop downward, using the long hair on their shoulders like a parachute. Listen out for males, whose croaking roars can often be heard resonating throughout the forest.

Point out swinging monkeys on one of our safari tours in Kenya.

From the large, lively markets of Nairobi to the small, slow-paced markets of the villages, shopping in Kenya is definitely "market-centric". Nairobi and other large cities have a range of boutiques and malls but, as in most other African countries, the buzzing markets are some of the best places to shop, eat and mingle with locals.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand for example have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Kenya

1. Handicrafts

The wood and soapstone carvings in Kenya are of great quality. Peruse the carvings at city markets and shops, or alternatively, buy direct from artisans in countryside villages.

2. Maasai jewellery

The colorful beaded creations of the Maasai make excellent souvenirs. Wear them as a bold, statement piece, or hang them on walls at home as a unique reminder of your time in Kenya.

Kenyan markets are full of vibrant fabric sarongs and wraps (also known as kikoys or kangas). Put these on your shopping list as they offer great protection from the African sun.

4. Kenyan music

Reggae, afro-rap, and African hip-hop are popular (especially in Kenya’s big cities), so stock up on some local music to bring a bit of Kenyan rhythm home with you.

Festival and events

Jamhuri day.

Feasts, speeches, parades, music, and dance all feature in this national holiday commemorating Kenya’s independence and the establishment of its republic. A mass celebration of freedom and unity, this is a big day for all Kenyan people. The day is celebrated on 12th December each year.

The birthday of the Prophet Mohammed turns Kenya’s Lamu Island from a sleepy village into a busy hub of activity. Pilgrims and visitors flock here for four days of devotional prayers and reverence, concluding with fun events such as donkey races, dhow sailing, traditional dance, and drumming.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

Kenya is a year-round destination with many drawcards depending on the activities you want to do, the animals you'd like to see and the type of weather you'd prefer to experience.

Most safari destinations are at their best during the dry season from June to October or December to March when it's not too hot, rainfall is low and vegetation is thinner (making it easier to view wildlife). These periods coincide with the high tourist season, particularly in December and January, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation rates.

Do I need a visa to travel to Kenya?

Most nationalities – except 43 exempt nationalities including the Bahamas, Cyprus, South Africa , Malaysia, Singapore, Tanzania and  Zimbabwe  – require a visa to enter Kenya for travel, business or transit purposes. Check the official eligibility list for more information.

You must obtain a visa before you travel as visas on arrival are not available. The good news is that the process is fairly quick and easy and most nationalities can apply online.

The e-visa takes around three working days to process, but you should apply two weeks prior to travel to be on the safe side.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Kenya?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Kenya but a little generosity will be received positively, especially considering the low wages that Kenyan service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Kenya?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Kenya’s large cities but should expect limited or no access in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Kenya?

Cell phone coverage is good in Kenya’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your mobile phone.

What are the toilets like in Kenya?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Kenya, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Street food (plate of stew) = 300-500 KES
  • Bottle of beer in a local bar = 250-500 KES
  • Food court or fast-food meal = 500-700 KES
  • Meal at a sit-down restaurant = 4000+ KES

Can I drink the water in Kenya?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Kenya. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Kenya?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Kenya?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and tourist areas like Nairobi and Mombasa but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities, as ATMs aren't always an option.

What public holidays are celebrated in Kenya?

  • 1 Jan New Year's Day
  • 2 Jan New Year Holiday
  • Good Friday*
  • Easter Monday*

  • 12 Dec Jamhuri Day
  • 25 Dec Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec Boxing Day

Please note, Kenya public holidays may vary.

What should I pack for Kenya?

Kenyans dress conservatively so it's important that you do the same to respect the local culture and customs. Dressing conservatively doesn't mean you need to cover yourself from head to toe, but you should wear long, loose-fitting clothing that covers your knees, shoulders, midriff and chest. Long layers are also more effective in keeping you cool and protecting your skin from the sun and insects.

You'll need a sturdy pair of walking shoes, long and loose-fitting layers (think knee-length shorts, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, etc), a pair of sandals, a warm fleece, sun-protective gear (sunglasses, a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunscreen), and insect repellent. You'll also need a reusable water bottle, a day bag and maybe a headlamp if you're camping.

Is Kenya LGBTQIA+ friendly?

LGBTQIA+ travelers who want to visit Kenya should exercise caution and avoid engaging in public displays of affection. That said, even public displays of affection for hetero couples can raise eyebrows.

Homosexuality is still illegal in Kenya and can be punishable by prison time. The criminalization of same-sex relationships was acquired from Britain before Kenya was granted independence in 1963 and has not been reviewed since.

Kenyan society is largely conservative and identifying as LGBTQIA+ is often considered to be a taboo. There are also no laws to protect LGBTQIA+ people against discrimination.

Is Kenya accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

A first-timer's guide to planning a safari in kenya.

Experts share practical tips for preparing for a successful safari.

A First-Timer's Guide to Planning a Safari in Kenya

Before you begin your once-in-a-lifetime African adventure, make sure you talk to your physician about recommended travel vaccines and pack strategically with plenty of layers.

You've been dreaming about going on safari in Kenya ever since the credits rolled in "Out of Africa," and now you're ready to embark on the trip of your dreams . To make sure you get the most out of the country's spectacular wildlife and jaw-dropping landscapes, here is the information you'll need, so that the only surprises you'll encounter are ones that you'll love.

An Average Day on Safari

While every accommodation is unique, most camps follow a similar schedule. Led by a wildlife guide, you'll go on at least two game drives per day with other guests for three to four hours per ride. Along the way, you'll stop at picturesque locations to stretch your legs, grab a snack and revel in incredible scenery. In the middle of the day, when predators and other species are hiding in the shade, you'll be in camp relaxing. Expect to take your meals at camp, though dining in the wild is also common. At night, you'll cozy up to a warm fire and mingle with the other guests to share your day's adventures before letting the sounds of the bush serenade you to sleep.

Activities and Extra Costs

Game drives are the crux of most safaris, but there are plenty of other activities for you to enjoy, from guided walks and visits to tribal villages to hot air balloon rides over the Masai Mara or camel safaris in the Northern Frontier. Some activities are included in your daily rate, but "it's always a good idea to know ahead of time what's included in your stay, as many options may come with an additional price tag," says Linda Friedman, CEO of Custom Safaris. Also, keep in mind that you may be charged for park entry fees, laundry, premium liquors and other amenities.

Wildlife-Viewing Opportunities

"Kenya is known not only for its massive concentrations of game but also for its vast open plains. You can spot and track wildlife from a fair distance and there is almost always something to see and some sort of interaction between species," says Andrew Beck, a professional wildlife photographer and a co-founder of Wild Eye, a photographic safari company. There are also certain areas that contain larger concentrations of specific species. If you love elephants, consider Amboseli where herds can reach 100 members or more. And from August to October, the Masai Mara plays host to millions of wildebeest during the Migration, while species like the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, reticulated giraffe and the gerenuk can only be found in the north.

Guides know all about animal behavior and the area in which your camp is located, as well as the location of recent sightings, dens and kills. Still, they can't make animals appear on cue, so stay open to what the day brings. In the bush, the world can change on a dime; with a little patience, you'll have the time of your life.

Family

Taking your child on safari can be one of the best ways to instill a lifelong love of wildlife and respect for the environment, and in the last few years, more companies are enticing families with larger tents or villas and special programs designed with families in mind. As Friedman points out, it's important to ask up front if children are allowed or if there is a minimum age requirement. If your child is very young, you may be required to reserve a private vehicle.

Photography

A DSLR camera and longer lenses are best for wildlife photography , but if that's not your objective, Beck suggests getting a point-and-shoot with the maximum optical zoom. "Don't even bother looking at the digital zoom feature as this is essentially a crop of the image," he says. It's also a smart idea to bring plenty of memory cards. There is nothing worse than having to delete images from your camera on the fly to make room for your next shot.

When it comes to the bush, safety at any lodging is top priority. Upon arrival, you'll be given all the dos and don'ts and it's important to follow directions. While safaris are safe, Friedman cautions, "These are wild animals, not kittens."

Preparing for Your Safari

Paperwork  You'll need a passport that is valid for at least six months prior to your arrival. Your passport must contain a minimum of two blank pages for stamps. You'll also need a $50 visa . You can apply for a visa online at Evisa.go.ke or you can wait until you arrive at the airport in Kenya.

Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are no mandatory vaccinations for travel to Kenya though you may be required to get a yellow fever shot if your travels take you through endemic zones prior to your arrival. The agency also advocates being up to date on immunizations for Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies and meningitis. Additionally, you may want to consider pills for malaria. Make sure to speak to your physician about your travel plans to determine what you need.

Pack enough light casual attire for a long weekend and take advantage of the same-day laundry service (weather permitting) that the majority of camps provide. It's chilly in the morning and evening, but hot in the afternoon, so dress in layers. A good sunscreen is also a must-have, in addition to a wide brim hat and a good pair of polarized sunglasses. And flip-flops are fine for the jeep, but also pack a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Small commuter planes are the main mode of transport into the bush and all the domestic carriers are sticklers about baggage restrictions. Bags must be soft, no longer than 26 inches and wheel-free, and the total luggage weight per person cannot exceed 15 kilograms (33 pounds), including your carry-on. If you go over the limit, your best-case scenario would be paying a fee, but in a worst-case scenario, you may have to buy a separate ticket for your baggage or wait until there is a plane with space available.

Money Matters

Kenya shillings is the local currency. You can pick up shillings at the airport upon arrival, but U.S. dollars are also widely accepted. Keep in mind, accommodations will accept major credit cards such as Visa or MasterCard (American Express is not as widely accepted) for amenities or gift shop purchases, but you should bring cash for gratuity as well as extras, such as cultural visits to local villages or souvenirs like handmade jewelry or other trinkets from local artisans.

Tips are not mandatory, but they are customary. Your guide should be at the top of your list, and according to Friedman, you should plan to pay $15-25 per person per day. If you have a large family, less per person is acceptable. If you want to distribute gratuity to all staff members, most camps have a staff box where guests can leave a gratuity of $5-10 per person per day. When in doubt, ask a manager for advice, Friedman says.

  • Safari: It is your dream to see elegant giraffes and powerful lions in the wild, before you fall asleep under the starry night sky. Join us on a camping , lodge or luxury safari , and we will make your dream come true.
  • Trekking: You are a nature-lover and want to hike through lush forests, open grass land and past gurgling mountain streams. Climb Mount Kenya , the second highest mountain in Africa with us.

Why travel to Kenya?

The green country on the equator has been the home of the safari for decades. The annual Great Migration in the Maasai Mara , the flocks of pink flamingos at Lake Nakuru and the calm warm waters at the Kenyan coast have attracted generations of travellers. Kenya invites you to experience diverse landscapes from lush forests and wide grasslands to a 500-kilometre-long coastline without crossing borders or having to get on a plane.

The country is not a newcomer on the international traveller’s map and Kenyans have understood long ago how to make dreams come true.

Lodges and campsites have come up with ingenious ways to be your home away from home and spoil you with excellent service and facilities in the middle of the bush.

Kenya is home to the Big Five. The state has put a ban on any form of wildlife hunting and together with private initiatives made the conservation of national parks one of their top priorities. Ideal conditions for wild animals to prosper in their natural habitat – and for you to watch them do just that.

The professional guides not only have a deep love for nature and wildlife, they also have qualifications and a membership certificate by the KPSGA (Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association) in their pocket. English is one of the official languages in Kenya, so communication won’t be a problem either. With easy access to qualified mechanics, Nairobi is the best spot in East Africa to keep a fleet of custom build Toyota Land Cruisers in shape for the bumpy bush.

Kenya Safari Destinations

Experience the perfect blend of conservation, culture, and ecotourism in Kenya, where the iconic and wild meet to inspire. Asilia Africa offers exceptional accommodations in the most sought-after regions, teeming with abundant wildlife. We have a range of boutique camps and collaborate with handpicked partner properties in highly desirable locations such as Amboseli, Tsavo, and the Rift Valley Lakes.

Masai Mara : The Greater Masai Mara region in southwest Kenya is renowned as the ultimate destination for wildlife enthusiasts. With a choice of accommodation in the national reserve or neighbouring private conservancies, you can witness various animals, including big cats, beautiful birds, and elephant.

Mara Naboisho Conservancy: If you seek a truly exclusive safari experience, the community-owned Mara Naboisho Conservancy is your dream destination. Located adjacent to the Masai Mara Reserve, this area boasts an impressive array of wildlife, including cheetah, elephant, and giraffe. However, what truly sets Mara Naboisho apart is its unparalleled concentration of lion, making it one of the most remarkable destinations for wildlife enthusiasts.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy: The high-altitude rolling hills of Laikipia, located north of Nairobi, house the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a trailblazer in conservation efforts. This world-renowned conservancy is best known for its role in protecting the last two remaining northern white rhino.

Amboseli: The exceptional elephant population and breathtaking Mount Kilimanjaro backdrop make for a photographer's dream shot. Witness the awe-inspiring sight of majestic elephant marching past Africa's tallest mountain.

Tsavo: The combined network of Tsavo’s west and east national parks in Kenya boast the largest protected area and is home to some of the world's oldest and most majestic "big tusker" elephants.

Rift Valley Lakes: A narrow strip of a massive fracture across the Middle East and Africa, the Rift Valley is a spectacular spectacle. Its three tectonic plates shift, slide, and collide, creating stunning features. These include soaring peaks, vast savannas, and sparkling lakes, such as Turkana, Baringo, and Nakuru.

Kenyan Safari Tours, Luxury Kenya Safari & Wildlife Experiences

kenya safari trip

Our Kenya Vacations and Tours

Kenya is synonymous with wildlife (and to some, perhaps marathon runners) and rightly so. A Kenya safari really is one of the top ways to see wild animals in their natural habitat, in wildlife reserves and in national parks. Kenya is a country of diverse landscapes with sweeping plains where the animal kingdom roams free. There are also majestic snow-capped mountains (Mount Kenya is the second highest peak on the African continent after Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching 5200 metres/17,050 feet) as well as tropical palm-fringed beaches next to coral reefs along the Indian Ocean coast. The Central Highlands are bisected by the Great Rift Valley from north to south. It can all be enjoyed on a Kenya vacation.

Kenya Trip Highlights

Nairobi , a thriving modern capital in the south of Kenya, is usually the starting point en route to a Kenya safari. The centre of the city has many modern high-rise buildings and a number of parks and gardens of which the best known is Uhuru Park. Both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya can be seen on a clear day from Nairobi. While here, consider a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the Danish author who wrote: “Out of Africa.” The Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi attracts many visitors, with its open-air seating and specialty selection of game meats.

Kenya Safari

Kenya’s game parks, reserves and other wildlife protection areas host some of the world’s wildest game, making Kenya ‘the home of the safari.’ The diversity of games in Kenya is simply astounding. There are numerous parks and reserves for your game-viewing safari. Most offer the opportunity to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) along with almost all of Africa’s best-known animal and bird life. With 11% of the world’s species, and some 1089 different varieties, Kenya’s birding is also among the best in the world. There are several types of accommodation to choose from – lodges, tented camps, and resorts. One can try a fly-in Kenyan safari from Nairobi directly into Amboseli or Maasai Mara National Parks . Most Kenya safaris are undertaken in vehicles with around eight passengers and an experienced game tracker/guide who is also the driver.

Kenya National Parks and Safaris

Maasai mara.

The Maasai Mara is a large national park situated in the southwest corner of Kenya bordering the Serengeti in Tanzania and sharing the same ecosystem. The annual wildebeest migration here is a natural cycle that replenishes and renews the grasslands of East Africa. This is one of the remarkable wildlife attractions that make Kenya one of the best wildlife destinations in the world. The migration which also includes zebra and gazelle starts northbound around July and returns southbound around October. The migration can be experienced on early morning game drives in customized vehicles, walking safaris with Maasai warrior guides, horseback safaris in areas surrounding the Mara, or even on a hot air balloon safari over the herds. The park has 570 different species of birds for the bird-watching enthusiast when travelling to Kenya. Maasai Mara is also home to the endangered black rhino. It also ranks among Africa’s best destinations for seeing big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site located to the east of the Great Rift Valley, about 175 kilometres/110 miles northeast of Nairobi. Mount Kenya is an important water tower, providing water for about 50% of the country’s population and producing 70% of Kenya’s hydroelectric power. Animal sightings here on a Kenyan safari can include elephants, tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbucks, waterbucks and elands.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park lies in Central Kenya, 140 kilometres/88 miles northwest of Nairobi in the Rift Valley. The ecosystem comprises the lake, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with flamingos and other water birds being the major attractions of the area. There are around 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 different species.

The Aberdare National Park covers the higher areas of the Aberdare mountain ranges of Central Kenya. The topography is quite diverse with deep ravines that cut through the forested slopes. Animals easily observed in the park include the black rhino, leopard, baboon, black and white colobus monkey and sykes’ monkey. Visitors can also indulge in picnics, trout fishing in the rivers and camping in the moorlands. Bird viewing is rewarding when travelling to Aberdare with over 250 species of birds existing in this park.

On a Kenya Safari in Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is also located in the Rift Valley. The ecosystem, mainly savannah grassland, spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet the Maasai tribespeople and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro on a Kenya vacation.

Samburu

Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and semi-desert park again located in the Rift Valley. Due to its remote distance and the fact that it was inaccessible for many years, the park has retained a naturally serene feeling. Besides the numerous wildlife found in this game reserve, the park is also a bird haven. You are guaranteed to see cheetahs, lions, leopards, impalas, buffalo, hippos, dik-diks, zebra, giraffe and oryx. Elephants are also spotted during this time, and you can watch the Nile crocodiles swim in the river on a Kenyan safari.

Other places to visit on a Kenya vacation

Something that can be a welcome addition to your Kenya safari is to head to the coast to unwind on the Indian Ocean. Mombasa is an atmospheric port offering white sand beaches and coral reefs. The air here is filled with the scent of spices and you will often see locals in colourful traditional clothing. The Old Town is very attractive with its narrow winding streets. Another well-known resort is Lamu Island, reached by ferry or air from Mombasa or air from Nairobi. It is known for its buildings made of coral stone and mangrove timber and for its corridors, verandas and elaborately carved wooden doors. Diani Beach, 30 kilometres/18 miles south of Mombasa has a 10 kilometre/6 mile long beach with sparkling white sands and lush greenery, an ideal stopover on a Kenya vacation.

What wildlife can I see on your safaris?

When you embark on a safari with Africa Kenya Safaris, you’ll have the opportunity to witness some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife, including the legendary Big Five : lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rhinoceroses. These magnificent animals are the cornerstone of every classic African safari, and our expert guides will take you to the best locations for spotting them in their natural habitats. From thrilling lion prides to massive elephant herds, you’ll be captivated by the beauty and power of these creatures.

A Diverse Tapestry of Wildlife

Beyond the Big Five, Kenya is home to a diverse tapestry of wildlife that populates its varied ecosystems. You can expect to encounter giraffes gracefully browsing the treetops, cheetahs sprinting across the plains in pursuit of prey, and hippos wallowing in serene waterholes. The country’s national parks and reserves are teeming with an array of antelope species, zebras, wildebeests, hyenas, and an impressive variety of birdlife. Our guides are not only experts at tracking and spotting these animals but also passionate about sharing their knowledge and insights with you, enhancing your safari experience.

Great Wildebeest Migration

One of the most awe-inspiring natural spectacles on Earth, the Great Wildebeest Migration , takes place in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. This annual migration sees millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores traveling in search of fresh grazing lands, attracting predators like lions and crocodiles. Witnessing this dramatic event is a bucket-list experience, and our safari itineraries are thoughtfully designed to coincide with the migration’s movements, ensuring you have a front-row seat to this remarkable wildlife phenomenon. Whether you’re a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or a first-time safari-goer, Kenya’s astounding biodiversity promises unforgettable encounters and photographic opportunities.

When is the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Choosing the best time for your Kenyan safari largely depends on your preferences and what you hope to experience. Kenya offers excellent safari opportunities year-round, but understanding the seasons can help you tailor your trip to match your interests.

Dry Season – June to October

For many travellers, the dry season, which spans from June to October, is the preferred time for a Kenyan safari. During this period, wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals. The weather is typically dry and cool, with sunny days and cool nights, making for comfortable game drives and outdoor activities. This season also aligns with the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara , a spectacle you won’t want to miss.

Green Season – November to May

The green season, also known as the rainy season, runs from November to May. While it may not be the driest time to visit, the lush landscapes, vibrant flora, and the birth of newborn animals make this a unique and beautiful time for safaris. Bird enthusiasts will find this season particularly appealing as migratory bird species visit Kenya. Additionally, accommodation rates are often more budget-friendly during the green season, making it an attractive option for travellers looking for value without compromising on wildlife experiences. Ultimately, the best time for your Kenyan safari depends on your preferences, whether you seek prime game-viewing opportunities or wish to witness Kenya’s natural beauty at its greenest.

How do you support wildlife conservation efforts?

At Africa Kenya Safaris, we are deeply committed to wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism practices. Our mission is to not only provide unforgettable safari experiences but also to actively contribute to the preservation of Kenya’s incredible biodiversity and ecosystems.

Partnerships with Conservation Organizations

One of the ways we support wildlife conservation efforts is through partnerships with renowned conservation organizations. We work closely with local and international NGOs that are dedicated to protecting Kenya’s wildlife and natural habitats. These partnerships enable us to channel funds and resources into critical projects aimed at safeguarding endangered species, conserving vital ecosystems, and combatting poaching and habitat degradation.

Educational Initiatives

We firmly believe that education is key to fostering a culture of conservation. That’s why we actively engage in educational initiatives for both tourists and local communities. During our safaris, our expert guides provide valuable insights into the behaviour and conservation status of the wildlife you encounter. We also collaborate with local schools and communities to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship. By supporting education, we hope to inspire future generations to become passionate advocates for Kenya’s wildlife and natural heritage.

What safety measures are in place during safaris?

At Africa Kenya Safaris, your safety is our top priority. We understand that embarking on a safari adventure involves exploring remote and wild landscapes, and we take comprehensive measures to ensure your well-being throughout your journey.

Experienced Guides and Drivers

Our team of expert safari guides and drivers are not only knowledgeable about Kenya’s wildlife and ecosystems but also well-trained in safety protocols. They are equipped to handle any situation that may arise during your safari, from wildlife encounters to navigating challenging terrain. Your guide will provide essential safety briefings and guidelines, ensuring that you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

We take pride in the quality and maintenance of our safari vehicles . Our 4×4 vehicles are specially designed for off-road adventures, featuring pop-up roofs for optimal wildlife viewing and safety features like seatbelts. Additionally, our vehicles undergo regular safety checks and maintenance to ensure they are in excellent condition for your safari. Rest assured that when you’re on safari with us, you’re in safe hands, and we are prepared to handle any situation to ensure your safety and enjoyment.

What should I pack for a safari in Kenya?

Packing for a safari in Kenya requires careful consideration to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of essentials to help you prepare for your adventure.

Clothing and Footwear

  • Neutral-Coloured Clothing : Opt for neutral, earth-toned clothing to blend in with the natural surroundings and avoid startling wildlife.
  • Lightweight Layers : Kenya’s climate can vary, so pack lightweight layers that can be added or removed as needed.
  • Comfortable Footwear : Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots are essential for walking safaris and bushwalks.
  • Hat and Sunglasses : Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Swimwear : If your safari includes lodge or camp accommodations with swimming pools, bring swimwear.

Safari Gear and Accessories

  • Binoculars : A good pair of binoculars will enhance your wildlife viewing experience.
  • Camera and Accessories : Don’t forget your camera or smartphone for capturing those incredible safari moments. Extra memory cards and batteries are a must.
  • Reusable Water Bottle : Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle and refilling it at lodges and camps.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight : Essential for navigating in the evenings and early mornings.
  • Charging Equipment : Bring chargers and adapters for your electronic devices, as power outlets may be available at lodges and camps.

Personal Items and Health

  • Personal Medications : Carry any prescription medications you require, along with a basic first-aid kit.
  • Sunscreen and Insect Repellent : Protect your skin from the sun and insects with appropriate products.
  • Toiletries : Travel-sized toiletries, including biodegradable soap and shampoo, are essential.
  • Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance, and any necessary permits.
  • Cash and Cards : While many lodges and camps accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to carry some cash in local currency for small purchases or tips.

Remember to pack as lightly as possible, as there are often luggage restrictions on safari flights . Additionally, specific packing requirements may vary depending on the type of safari and the time of year you visit Kenya. Always check with your safari operator for any specific recommendations or requirements for your safari adventure.
